Catalysts are one of the most important component that are used in a wide area in the chemical industry and increase the cost in the sector. Especially, the use of catalyst support material with precious metal catalyst is important in reducing the catalyst cost. Carbonaceous materials have been used in heterogeneous catalysis reactions as they provide the desired properties for catalyst support, and it is important that these materials can be obtained from a sustainable and renewable source such as biomass. In this study, production of bio-based material from fir wood sawdust and using these materials as carbonaceous catalyst support materials were investigated. Biochar was produced via carbonization while hydrochar was produced via hydrothermal carbonization among the thermochemical processes. Precious metals Pt and Pd was loaded to biomass, biochar and hydrochar as wt.1%. The physicochemical and surface properties of the obtained catalyst samples were examined using different techniques. It was determined that the biomass did not have suitable properties for direct use as catalyst support. When the catalyst properties of the metal loaded biomass and hydrochar were examined, it was seen that the porosity of the samples was higher, the metal distribution was homogeneous and the crystal structure was better., Katalizörler kimya endüstrisinde geniş bir alanda kullanılan ve kullanıldığı sektörde maliyeti artıran en önemli kalemlerden biridir. Özellikle değerli metallerin katalizör olarak kullanıldığı reaksiyonlarda katalizör destek malzemesinin kullanılması, katalizör maliyetinin azaltılması için önem arz etmektedir. Karbonlu malzemeler katalizör desteği için istenen özellikleri sağlaması nedeniyle heterojen kataliz reaksiyonlarında uzun süredir kullanılmaktadır ve bu malzemelerin biyokütle gibi sürdürülebilir ve yenilenebilir bir kaynaktan elde edilebilmesi önemlidir. Yapılan bu çalışmada, göknar ağacı talaşından biyotabanlı malzeme elde edilmesi ve bu malzemelerin karbonlu katalizör destek malzemesi olarak kullanılabilirliği araştırılmıştır. Çalışmada termokimyasal yöntemler olan karbonizasyon yöntemi ile biyochar; hidrotermal karbonizasyon yöntemi ile de hidrochar elde edilmiştir. Hem ham biyokütleye, hem de biyochar ve hidrochar örneklerine değerli metallerden olan Pt ve Pd kütlece %1 oranında yüklenmiştir. Elde edilen katalizör örneklerinin fizikokimyasal ve yüzey özellikleri farklı teknikler kullanılarak incelenmiş ve elde edilen sonuçlara göre, biyokütlenin katalizör desteği olarak doğrudan kullanılması için uygun özelliklere sahip olmadığı belirlenmiştir. Metal yüklenen biyochar ve hidrocharın katalizör özellikleri incelendiğinde ise örneklerin gözenekliliğinin daha yüksek olduğu, metal dağılımının homojen ve kristal yapısının daha iyi olduğu görülmüştür.

Günümüzde mobil cihazlar ve elektirikli araçların gitgide yaygınlaşması ile birlikte tekrar şarj edilebilen ikincil pillerin kullanımı artmaktadır. İkincil pillerden en yoğun olarak kullanılan lityum-iyon (Li-yon) pillerin sürdürülebilirliği hakkındaki endişeler ve dünyadaki sınırlı lityum rezervleri, yeni-nesil enerji depolama sistemleri hakkında yapılan bilimsel çalışmaları hızlandırmıştır. Bu noktada Li-iyon pillere alternatif olarak kullanılabilecek sodyum-iyon (Na-iyon) piller son derece umut verici elektrokimyasal enerji depolama cihazları olarak göze çarpmaktadır. Fakat bu pillerin ticarileşebilmesi için enerji ve güç yoğunluğu ile döngüsel kararlık gibi pek çok özelliklerinin iyileştirilmesi gerekmektedir. Na-iyon pilleri oluşturan her bileşenin üretim süreci ve elektrokimyasal performansı, bu malzemelerin yapı-özellik ilişkisi ve üretim koşullarına yüksek oranda bağlıdır. Bu nedenle, anot gibi her bir bileşenin yapısal özellikleri ile elektrokimyasal performansları arasındaki ilişkinin belirlenmesi ve en iyi performansı gösteren yapıların tasarlanması Na-iyon pillerin geliştirilmesi için kritik bir öneme sahiptir. Günümüzde Na-iyon pillerin anotlarında ucuz ve sürdürülebilir malzemelerin kullanımı hakkında yoğun ve umut verici çalışmalar yapılmasına rağmen, farklı malzeme grupları arasında, değişik grafitizasyon derecesi ve morfolojik özelliklere olabilen karbon esaslı malzemeler ve bunlardan üretilen kompozit malzemeler sıklıkla öne çıkmaktadır. Concerns about the sustainability of lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries, which are the most widely used of secondary batteries, and the limited lithium reserves around the world have accelerated scientific studies on next-generation energy storage systems. At this point, sodium-ion (Na-ion) batteries, which can be used as an alternative to Li-ion batteries, stand out as highly promising electrochemical energy storage devices. However, many characteristics such as energy density, power density and cyclic stability have to be improved for commercialization of such batteries. The production process and electrochemical performance of each Na-ion battery component are highly dependent on the structure-property relationship and production conditions of these materials. Therefore, determining the relationship between the structural properties of each component such as the anode and their electrochemical performance together with designing the best performing structures are critical for the development of Na-ion batteries. Although intensive and promising studies have been conducted on the use of low-cost and sustainable materials in the anodes of Na-ion batteries, carbon-based materials, which can have different graphitization degree and morphological charecteristics, and their composites often stand out among different material groups. The aim of this study is to create a theoretical basis for the usability of different carbon materials in the anodes of Na-ion batteries with the current literature findings.

Biyorafineriler için piroliz gibi termokimyasal dönüşüm yöntemlerinin kinetik olarak modellenmesi en zorlu konulardan biridir. Temelde biyokütle pirolizini selüloz ile birlikte lignin ve hemiselüloz özelliklerinin etkilediği bilinmektedir. Ancak çok fazlı karmaşık piroliz tepkimelerine giren bu biyopolimerlerin termal davranışları hakkında halen literatürde sınırlı bilgi bulunmaktadır. Bu nedenle, bu çalışmada selülozun piroliz kinetiği ve termodinamiği incelenmiştir. Pirolize ait kinetik parametreler master eğriler ve Friedman yönteminin birleştirilmesi ile hesaplanmıştır. Selülozun aktif pirolizinin 263 ile 455 °C arasında gerçekleştiği saptanmıştır. Uygulanan Friedman yöntemi deneysel veriler ile çok iyi uyum sağlamış, termokimyasal dönüşüm işleminin aktivasyon enerjileri 150.8 ile 190.2 kJ/mol arasında bulunmuş ve ortalama aktivasyon enerjisinin 164.3 kJ/mol olduğu hesaplanmıştır. Katı hal bozunma süreçlerinde kullanılan kinetik yöntemlerin karşılaştırılması ile selüloz piroliz mekanizmasının düşük dönüşümlerde (0, Kinetic modeling of thermochemical conversion methods such as pyrolysis is one of the most challenging issues for bio-refineries. It is known that cellulose together with hemicellulose and lignin mainly affect the characteristics of biomass pyrolysis. However, there is still limited knowledge about the thermal behaviors of biopolymers that go into complex multi-phase pyrolysis reactions in the literature. Therefore, cellulose pyrolysis kinetics and thermodynamics were investigated in this study. Kinetic parameters of the pyrolysis process were calculated by a combined method of master-plots and Friedman method. Active pyrolysis of cellulose is found to occur between 263 and 455 °C. Applied Friedman method was perfectly fitted with the experimental data and activation energy of the thermochemical conversion process was found between 150.8 and 190.2 kJ/mol while the mean activation energy was calculated as 164.3 kJ/mol. WOS: 000458655400018, Carbon fiber, which has unique physical, chemical and biological properties, is a versatile material in fiber form composed of carbon atoms arranged in hexagonal structure. In the industrial production of carbon fibers, whose potential application areas develop by day, PAN (polyacrylonitrile) is generally used. However, the existing production technologies of PAN-based carbon fiber production have became unable to reduce production costs. By pitch-based carbon fiber production, which has a smaller market share than PAN, it is possible to produce carbon fiber with a cheaper way and a higher efficiency than PAN. Today, many studies have been carried out on the production of carbon fibers from isotropic and mesophase pitches that can be synthesized from different sources, development of production processes and end product characteristics. In this study, a literature review on pitch-based carbon fiber production was carried out and production processes were investigated.

Tez (doktora) - Anadolu Üniversitesi, Anadolu Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, Kimya Mühendisliği Anabilim Dalı, Kayıt no: 433664, Bu çalışmada biyokütle, polimer ve petrol rafinerisi atıkları kullanılarak zift esaslı karbon fiber üretimi araştırılmış olup, yürütülen çalışma üç aşamada gerçekleştirilmiştir. İlk aşamada TGA/MS/FT-IR kullanılarak iki farklı biyokütle örneğinin (ceviz kabuğu ve şeftali çekirdeği) ve farklı polimerlerin (PET, PS ve PVC) pirolizi ve biyokütle/polimer karışımlarının birlikte pirolizi yapılmıştır. Pirolitik aktivasyon enerjileri farklı eş-dönüşüm yöntemleriyle hesaplanmış ve bozunma sırasında açığa çıkan gazlar belirlenmiştir. İkinci aşamada, sabit yataklı reaktörde piroliz çalışmaları yürütülmüş olup, ürün verimi ile özelliklerine sıcaklık ve birlikte pirolizin etkisi incelenmiştir. Son aşamada ise zift esaslı karbon fiber üretimi araştırılmıştır. Bu amaçla, katranların pirolizlenmiş fuel oil (PFO) ile oligomerizasyonu bromlama/dehidrobromlama işlemi ile gerçekleştirilmiş ve katran özelliklerinin, karışma oranının ve brom miktarının etkileri belirlenmiştir. Ardından, aynı yumuşama noktasına sahip ziftler farklı katranlar kullanılarak sentezlenmiş ve karbon fiber üretimi gerçekleştirilmiştir. Eriyik çekme, stabilizasyon ve karbonizasyon işlemleri sonrasında, üretilen karbon fiber özellikleri, ziftlerin yumuşama noktasından bağımsız olarak karşılaştırılmıştır. Karakterizasyon sonuçları, karbon fiberlerin çekme dayanımı ve elastik modülünün zift üretiminde kullanılan hammaddelerin yapısına bağlı olduğunu göstermiştir. Sonuç olarak, biyokütle, polimer ve petrol rafineri atıkları kullanılarak genel amaçlı karbon fiber üretiminde çevre dostu, alternatif bir yöntem sunulmuştur.

Yapılan bu çalışmada tarımsal bir atık olan nohut samanı, sulu çözeltilerden boyar madde gideriminde biyosorbent olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Çözelti pH'ı, biyosorbent miktarı, başlangıç boyar madde derişimi, temas süresi ve çözelti sıcaklığının biyosorpsiyon işlemine olan etkileri incelenmiştir. Ayrıca, metilen mavisi biyosorpsiyonuna ait denge izoterm, termodinamik ve kinetik çalışmalar gerçekleştirilmiştir. Biyosorpsiyon denge verilerinin Freundlich izotermi ile uyumlu olduğu belirlenmiş, biyosorpsiyonu en iyi ifade edebilen kinetik modelin ise sözde(yalancı) ikinci dereceden model olduğu saptanmıştır. Hesaplanan termodinamik parametreler, biyosorpsiyonun 20-50 °C aralığında kendiliğinden gerçekleşen endotermik bir işlem olduğunu göstermiştir. Metilen mavisi biyosorpsiyonu için nohut samanının maksimum tek tabaka biyosorpsiyon kapasitesi 108,7 mg/g olarak belirlenmiştir. Sonuç olarak, nohut samanının sulu çözeltilerden metilen mavisi gideriminde çevreye dost, düşük maliyetli ve etkili bir biyosorbent olarak kullanılabileceği belirlenmiştir., In the present study, an important agricultural waste, chickpea straw, was evaluated as biosorbent material for the removal of basic dyes from aqueous solutions. Effects of solution pH, biosorbent dosage, initial dye concentration, contact time and solution temperature on biosorption process were investigated. In addition, equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic studies were carried out for the methylene blue biosorption. It was determined that equilibrium data were in accordance with Freundlich isotherm and pseudo second order kinetic model was the best model to express the biosorption kinetics. Calculated thermodynamic parameters showed that, biosorption was a spontaneous endothermic process between 20 and 50 °C. The maximum monolayer biosorption capacity of chickpea husk was determined as 108.7 mg/g for methylene blue biosorption. As a result, chickpea straw could be used as an environmentally friendly, cheap and effective biosorbent material for the removal of methylene blue from aqueous solutions.

Bu çalışmada, tarımsal bir atık olan antep fıstığı kabuklarından aktif karbon üretimi ve karakterizasyonu incelenmiştir. Kimyasal aktivasyon yöntemi ile optimum üretim koşullarını belirlemek için sıcaklığın (300, 500, 700 and 900 oC) ve doyurma oranının ( 1:1, 2:1 ve 3:1; aktivasyon maddesi :numune) etkisi iki farklı yöntem (hammaddenin aktivasyonu ve kömür aktivasyonu) uygulanarak ve iki farklı aktivasyon maddesi (fosforik asit ve potasyum hidroksit) kullanılarak incelenmiştir.Aktif karbon üretmek için, kimyasalla doyurulmuş örnekler sürekli bir azot akışında (100 cm3 / dak) ve 10 oC/dak ısıtma hızında aktivasyon sıcaklığına kadar ısıtılmış ve bu sıcaklıkta 1 saat süreyle bekletilmiştir.Aktif karbonların gözenek yapıları N2 adsorpsiyonu ile belirlenmiş ve mikro ve mezogözenek analizleri ?Lokal Olmayan Yoğunluk Fonksiyonu Teorisi? ve ?Monte Carlo Simülasyon Yöntemi? ile belirlenmiştir. Üretilen aktif karbonların BET yüzey alanları bağıl basıncın 0.01 ile 0.15 olduğu bir aralıkta N2 adsorpsiyon verilerinden bulunmuştur.Hammadde aktivasyonu yöntemi uygulanarak, fosforik asit ile aktive edilmiş aktif karbonların BET yüzey alanları 880 ile 1640 m2/g arasında bulunmuştur. En yüksek BET yüzey alanı, 3/1 doyurma oranı ( g H3PO4/g hammadde), 500 oC aktivasyon sıcaklığında aktif karbon üretilmesi durumunda elde edilmiştir. Geleneksel olarak uygulanan, hammadde aktivasyonunun uygulandığı yöntem ile üretilen, fosforik asit ile aktive edilmiş aktif karbonların tekrarlanabilirliği de incelenmiştir. Sonuçlar, hem BET yüzey alanı değerlerinin hem de gözenek boyutu dağılımlarının kendi aralarında tutarlı olduğunu göstermiştir.Diğer taraftan, fosforik asit ile yapılan char aktivasyon deneyleri ile, mezogözenekli bir yapı oluşturularak, hammaddenin aktive edildiği yöntemden daha düşük BET yüzey alanlarına sahip olan aktif karbonlar üretilmiştir. Aynı kömür aktivasyonu yöntemi potasyum hidroksit ile denendiğinde ise, yüksek sıcaklıklarda mikrogözenekli yapı oluşturularak, yüksek BET yüzey alanlarına sahip aktif karbonlar üretilebileceği sonucuna varılmıştır.Sonuçlar, gözenek yapısı gibi, aktif karbonun kül içeriği, bulamaç pH değeri, gerçek yoğunluğu, elementel bileşimi, metilen mavi sayısı gibi özelliklerinin de, hem üretim koşulları hem de üretim yöntemi ile önemli oranda etkilendiğini göstermiştir.Anahtar kelimeler: Aktif karbon, Antep fıstığı kabuğu, Fosforik asit, Potasyum hidroksit, Gözenek yapısı, Aktivasyon In this study production and characterization of activated carbon from an agricultural waste, pistachio-nut shells, was investigated. To determine optimum production conditions by chemical activation method, effect of tempreature (300, 500, 700 and 900 oC) and effect of impregnation ratio (1:1, 2:1 and 3:1 as activation agent:sample) were investigated by applying two different methods (raw material activation and char activation) and with two different activation agents (phosphoric acid and potassium hydroxide).To produce activated carbon, all the impregnated samples were heated to the final activation temperature under a continuous nitrogen flow (100 cm3/min) and at a heating rate of 10 oC/min and were held at that temperature for 1 hour.Pore structures of activated carbons were determined by N2 adsorption and micro-mesopore analysis was made by ?Non-local Density Functional Theory? and ?Monte Carlo Simulation? method (NLDFT-Monte Carlo Simulation Method). BET surface areas of produced activated carbons were found from N2 adsorption data in the relative pressure range of 0.01 to 0.15.BET surface areas of phosphoric acid activated carbons by raw material activation method were found between 880 and 1640 m2/g. The highest value of the BET surface area was obtained in the case of the activated carbon which was produced with an impregnation ratio of 3/1 (g H3PO4/g raw material), at an activation temperature of 500 oC. The repeatibility was also investigated on phosphoric acid activated carbons which were produced with conventional raw matererial activation method. Results showed that, both the BET surface area values and pore size distributions were consistent among themselves.On the other hand char activation experiments with phosphoric acid produced activated carbons having lower BET surface areas than the ones obtained with raw material activation method by creating mesoporous structure. When the same char activation method was tried with potassium hydroxide, it was concluded that elevated temperatures could help in producing activated carbons with high BET surface areas by creating microporous structure.Results also showed that properties of activated carbon such as ash content, slurry pH value, true density, elemental composition, methylene blue number and surface morphology were strongly affected by both production conditions and production method, as pore structure was affected considerably.Keywords: Activated carbon, Pistachio-nut shell, Phosphoric acid, Potassium hydroxide, Pore structure, Activation 212

WOS: 000462839400004, The purpose of this study was to produce activated carbons (ACs) from chickpea (Cicer arietinum) husks by chemical activation (KOH and K2CO3) and to examine their feasibility in removing heavy metals from aqueous solutions. In the case of KOH impregnation with a ratio of 50 wt%, the most developed porosity was achieved, with a BET surface area of 2082m(2)/g and a total pore volume of 1.07cm(3)/g. By using the product, the maximum adsorption capacities were found to be 135.8, 59.6, and 56.2mg/g for Pb(II), Cr(VI), and Cu(II), respectively. The experimental data were analyzed by various adsorption isotherm and kinetic models. Thermodynamic parameters such as G degrees, H degrees, and S degrees were also calculated. The results obtained in this study shows that adsorption onto chickpea-husk-derived activated carbon was endothermic and spontaneous for the removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions.
