Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of previous coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection on mortality, factors influencing mortality, and potential postoperative complications in on-pump cardiac surgery. Methods: This single-center, retrospective, observational study included 233 adult patients who underwent on-pump cardiac surgery between June 2021 and February 2022. Patients with preoperative history of COVID-19 infection confirmed by nasopharyngeal swab polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test were compared to those without COVID-19 history. Results: Patients’ mean age was 60.12±11.26 years (range, 23–81 years), and 77.3% were male. The mean time from PCR positivity to surgery was 191.11±169.9 days (median, 108 days). No between-group differences were observed in anesthesia, cross-clamp time, pump time, operative time, extubation time, length of intensive care unit and hospital stay, or mortality (p>0.05). The post-COVID-19 group had higher rates of preoperative acute neurologic events and arrhythmias, pump lactate levels, and intraoperative inotropic scores (p<0.05). These factors were not associated with survival. Postoperative pneumothorax was more frequent in the post-COVID-19 group (p=0.002) and associated with longer length of hospital stay. No significant difference was observed in preoperative, postoperative, or changes in neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) between groups. Conclusion: Patients with and without COVID-19 history had similar outcomes after open-heart surgery. Nevertheless, the former had increased frequency of postoperative pneumothorax and prolonged length of hospital stay. Open-heart surgery seems safe after COVID-19. However, larger, prospective studies including inflammatory markers other than NLR are needed to further investigate the potential complications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: In this study we aimed to compare the efficacy of ethanol and phenol used in the EUSguided celiac plexus neurolysis procedure on pain scores and complications. Material and Methods: Between January 2009 and June 2022, 28 patients who underwent celiac neurolysis under sedation via EUS (endoscopic ultrasonography) guidance at the endoscopy unit were included. We retrospectively analyzed the data of the EUS-guided celiac neurolysis procedures for pain management of patients with pancreatic cancer. Results: Patients in the alcohol group had lower pain scores. Conclusion: When alcohol and phenol-based neurolytic techniques were compared, better analgesic effect was obtained in the alcohol group. Introduction: Preoperative anxiety due to anesthesia is a common situation and decreases with preoperative evaluation. The aim of this study is to determine whether utilization of BATHE method further decreases the anxiety scores of patients who are evaluated at an anesthesia clinic for preoperative examination. Methods: The patients were randomized into "BATHE" and "Control" groups by using the closed envelope technique. State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) scores were recorded as entrance STAI for all patients. During preoperative evaluation, BATHE method was applied to the BATHE Group whereas it was not applied to the Control Group. Postexamination, STAI scores were recorded as exit STAI and the patients were later asked questions about their contentment. Results: Data of 463 patients were included in the analysis. Demographic data was similar in the groups. In both groups the exit STAI scores (BATHE: 34.27±10.30, Control: 34.90±9.54) were lower in comparison to the entrance STAI scores (BATHE: 38.21±9.86, Control: 37.09±9.93). The mean gap between the entrance STAI and exit STAI scores of the BATHE (3.94±6.05) and Control groups (2.19±6.14) were statistically significant (p<0.001). Conclusion: Utilization of BATHE method decreases the anxiety scores of preoperative patients to a greater extent, as measured by STAI index, in comparison to standard preoperative evaluation. Aim: Pain control is an important issue in patients with inoperable cancers of upper abdominal organs. Although various pharmacological drugs are adequate for this, more invasive and interventional methods such as celiac plexus block (CPB) come forward for the cases which are unresponsive to conventional medical treatments. In this study our aim was to evaluate the contribution of CPB to patient comfort in patients with inoperable cancer. Material and Methods: Thirty-four patients who were diagnosed with inoperable malignant and underwent CPB during five years period were included. All procedures were performed with the guidance of endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) and ethanol was used as the neurolytic agent. Results: Majority of the cases were female (%55.9, n:19) and the median age was 66 years (range: 56-78 years). Most of the patients had pancreatic cancer (38.3%, n:13), and the remaining patients had gastric cancer, Klatskin tumor, gallbladder cancer and hepatocellular carcinoma. Pain resolved completely in 16 patients (47.2%) and was controlled with non-narcotic analgesics in six patients (17.6%) after the procedure. None of the patients developed any major complication or paraplegia. Conclusion: It was observed that pain control was not sufficiently achieved in the advanced grade of invasion. For this reason, patient selection should be done meticulously and CPB should be performed in the early period of pain in order to obtain an effective response. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
