There are few studies that focus directly on research etiology of GPP/PD and use structured scales. The aim of this study was to research childhood trauma and dissociation forms among women with GPP/PD.Patients and methods: Fifty-five women with GPP/PD according to the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and 61 healthy women with no complaints of sexual function as a control group, in the age range of 18–60 years, were included in this study. Sociodemographic data form, Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ-28), Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES), and Somatoform Dissociation Questionnaire (SDQ-20) were administered to all participants.Results: Sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and emotional neglect scores, which comprise the subgroups of CTQ, were found high among women with GPP/PD compared with the control group (p=0.003, p=0.006, p=0.001). While a significant difference between the two groups’ SDQ scores was obtained (p=0.000), no significant difference was detected between the two groups’ DES scores (p=0.392).Discussion: The results evoke the question are genitopelvic pain conditions, vaginismus and dyspareunia, that cannot be explained with a medical cause and that cause penetration disorder, a kind of dissociative symptom prone to develop in some women with childhood psychogenic trauma. Oxidative stress during in vitro culture leads to defects in development of gametes and embryos. Several antioxidants such as cysteamine, L-ascorbic acid, beta mercaptoethanol, cysteine, glutathione, proteins, vitamins have been used to supplement culture media to counter the oxidative stress. This study was conducted to detect the effect of adding cysteamine to the maturation medium to subsequent cleavage rates of sheep embryos. Totally 604 ovaries were obtained by ten replica and 2060 oocytes were collected. The cumulus oocyte complexes were recovered by the slicing method. A total of 1818 selected oocytes were divided into two groups and used for maturation (88.25%). The first group was created as supplemented with cysteamine (Group A) and second group (Group B, control) without cysteamine in TCM-199. The two groups were incubated for 24 h at 38.8 °C in an atmosphere of 5% CO2 in humidified air for in vitro maturation (IVM). After IVM, oocytes were fertilized with 50 x 107 / mL fresh ram semen in BSOF medium for 18 h. After fertilization, maturation groups were divided into two subgroups with different culture media: Group AI-SOF (Synthetic Oviduct Fluid medium), Group AII-CR1aa (Charles Rosencrans medium), Group BI-SOF and Group BII-CR1aa were achieved. Cleavage rates were evaluated at day 2. post insemination. The rates of cleavage were detected as 59.54% (184/309), 55.44% (173/312), 65.34% (215/329), 59.34% (200/337) respectively, with showing no statistically significant difference between the groups at the level of P>0.05. In conclusion, supplementing cysteamine to maturation media in TCM-199 did not affect the cleavage rates of sheep embryos in SOF and CR1aa culture media.

OBJECTIVE: The optimal anticoagulant treatment regimen in hospitalized coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients is uncertain. This study aimed to compare the rates of disease progression and mortality in patients treated with low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) according to baseline d-dimer levels and in those who received a fixed-dose regimen irrespective of the d-dimer level. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of all patients admitted to a university hospital for COVID-19 pneumonia during a 1-year period. The protocol for d-dimer-driven therapy (on-protocol) was as follows: prophylactic dose when the baseline level is 3000 ng/mL. We compared the progression and mortality rates between the on-protocol and off-protocol treatment groups. The offprotocol group consisted of patients that received a fixed-dose LMWH regimen, which was not in accordance with the defined protocol. RESULTS: Of 384 patients (mean age 61.5 ± 15.9 years, 216 male), 294 patients with complete data composed the study group, and 174 patients were treated on-protocol and 120 patients were treated off-protocol. The on-protocol group had lower C-reactive protein (CRP), ferritin, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and d-dimer levels and higher SpO2/FiO2 levels at admission. Disease progression developed in 45/174 on-protocol patients (25.9%) vs. 53/120 off-protocol patients (44.2%) during the follow-up (P = .001), and mortality was 29 (16.7%) vs. 32 (26.7%), respectively (P = .041). Logistic regression analysis was performed and included age, presence of comorbidities, LMWH regimen, baseline SpO2/FiO2, CRP, and LDH levels as independent variables. The presence of cardiac comorbidity, age, CRP, and LDH levels, but not the LMWH treatment regimen, were associated with both disease progression and mortality. CONCLUSION: A d-dimer-driven LMWH treatment protocol is not associated with better clinical outcomes in hospitalized COVID-19 patients.

Introduction: Personality characteristics have an important place in the choices of interns who are at the stage of deciding how their profession will be shaped in the future. While the Big 5 personality model has been widely used in evaluating the personality traits factor in career planning, the Enneagram has increased in popularity in recent years. In this study, it was aimed to investigate how senior medical students evaluate their professional future between these choices and the students' personality types. Objectives: Forms and scales were presented to 221 interns who agreed to participate in our study and were studying in their final year in the 2022-2023 period at three different faculties, two state universities and one private university in the Marmara Region in Turkey. Methods: The sociodemographic data form, Enneagram Personality Types and Subtypes Inventory, and Positive Future Expectation Scale, prepared by the researchers and containing questions about the factors that may be effective in choosing medical specialization, obtained through a face-to-face pilot interview with ten students and literature review, were applied to the participants. Participants answered the forms and scales via 'Google forms'. Results: 211 out of 221 participants, who did not constitute outliers, were included in the analysis. The mean age of the participants was 24.43 (S.E= 0.11) In terms of Enneagram typologies, Type 2 (39.3%) exhibited the highest prevalence, followed by Type 1 (13.3%), Type 6 (11.8%), and Type 7 (8.5%). Furthermore, a statistically significant relationship was found between specialization area and Enneagram types (Fisher exact <.001, p<.001). Post-hoc examinations highlighted specific associations, such as the relationship between Type 3 and Cardiovascular Surgery, Orthopedics and Traumatology; Type 4 and Pneumology, Psychiatry; Type 5 and PRC, Type 6 and Infectious Diseases, Neurology, Medical Microbiology; Type 7 and Cardiology; Type 8 and Pediatrics, Medical Biochemistry; and Type 9 and Family Medicine, Radiology, Psychiatry, Medical Pathology. Conclusions: When the results are evaluated, the highest rate of type 2 and type 1 of the Enneagram typology in senior medical faculty students supports the fact that the medical profession consists of responsible and principled people who love helping others. It is compatible with the character traits of people with type 9 who avoid stress and conflict, preferring the department to have a low workload, and turning to family medicine, radiology, psychiatry and medical pathology departments, which are estimated to have relatively fewer working hours and emergency applications. Our study suggests that this scale be used more widely, as the Enneagram typology, which is used in many professional and career choices, shows results compatible with the participants' preferences in choosing a medical specialty. Parental bonding is linked to emotion regulation and alexithymia. This study aimed to examine the relationships between parental bonding, alexithymia, and GPPPD.Patients and Methods: Sixty-four patients with GPPPD were enrolled in the study, and 60 controls were matched for demographic features. Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) was used to evaluate alexithymia, the Bonding to Parents Scale (BPS) was used to assess parental bonding, and sexual functions were assessed via Golombok–Rust Inventory of Sexual Satisfaction (GRISS).Results: The rate of alexithymic traits was statistically higher in the GPPPD group than in the controls (p = 0.005). Patients with GPPPD obtained higher scores on the maternal care/control (p = 0.003) and maternal overprotection (p = 0.008) compared to controls. Difficulty describing feelings factor of alexithymia (p = 0.012) emerged as a predictor of group membership (GPPPD vs controls). To test whether alexithymia was significantly associated with parental bonding, all subjects were divided into two subgroups, alexithymic and non-alexithymic. When the subgroups were compared in terms of parental attitudes, maternal (p = 0.034) and paternal (p = 0.006) overprotection subscale scores were higher in the alexithymic group than in the non-alexithymic group.Discussion: According to the results, alexithymic traits are characteristic of patients with GPPPD; however, although patients with GPPPD may experience difficulties with perceived parental bonding, this factor does not appear to be a predictor of GPPPD.Keywords: genitopelvic pain, penetration disorder, alexithymia, parental bonding, vaginismus, dyspareunia

In this study, automated visual analysis was used to explore how the political leanings of news media are associated with their visual representation of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement. We analyzed more than 9,000 images posted on Facebook pages run by U.S. news media between August 2014 and October 2020 using commercially developed computer vision tools and a topic modeling algorithm. The results show that images used in BLM-related news coverage can be categorized into 10 distinctively themed groups that overlap with the main types of protest images uncovered by manual content analysis. Furthermore, news sources engaged in different visual representation practices depending on their partisan leanings. The patterns uncovered in this study imply that (de)legitimization of protests may take either active or passive forms. These findings contribute to theorization of the way news media might use social media platforms to (de)legitimize social protests, which may influence public opinion on social issues.

Evidence that women have paid the price of what has been labeled the “shadow pandemic” is found in the increase in violence against them. The rates of femicide and lack of trust in the Turkish judicial system of the authoritarian government are worrisome. Protests have been made in the streets and through social media in response. Our goal was to determine the role of legacy news media and social media in bringing awareness of the femicide issue to the public and how affective publics function surrounding a relatively unaddressed societal problem using datasets created by women’s organizations. We conducted a content analysis on 150 sampled femicide cases in Turkey before and during the pandemic taken from online news sources. We investigated the quality of traditional news media coverage and the volume of social media users expressing emotional reactions to individual femicides over time. Results suggest that the journalistic performance of covering the issue of femicide fails to detail essential facts, and awareness and concern for the issue are evident in the Likes, retweets, shares, and expressions of emotional engagement provided to the victims, while online reactions to femicide have increased substantially since 2019, contributing to the formation of affective publics. The study makes a conceptual contribution to the understanding of legacy media and social media’s roles in spurring public engagement about serious social problems in autocratic political contexts while advancing the methodological tools of combining social scientific techniques with computational ones.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of two modified semen diluents on the spermatological parameters of Saanen goat sperm stored at 4°C. Ejaculates were obtained from five Saanen bucks by means of an electro-ejaculator and divided into five aliquots. Then, aliquots of ejaculates were used to create five experimental groups as follows: Group 1 (control), group 2A containing seminal plasma (SP) and bovine serum albumin (BSA; 10 mg/mL-1), group 2B containing BSA without SP, group 3A containing egg yolk (EY; 17.00%) and SP and finally group 3B containing EY without SP. All aliquots of semen were extended with Tris-based extender. Spermatological parameters of experimental groups were observed at 0, 6, 12 and 24 h periods during storage at 4°C. Motility of semen in groups 2A and 2B was found to be best values compared to other groups. However, the motility of group 3A at 24 h was 0.00%. In conclusion, it was concluded that the addition of 10 mg/mL-1 of BSA to Tris-based extender could be useful in the storage of Saanen goat semen regardless of SP at 4°C.

The novel film structure of corn-zein coated on polypropylene (PP) synthetic film for packaging industry was developed to examine the feasibility of resulting coated films as an alternative water barrier performance for food packaging. The effects of coating formulation (solvent, corn-zein, plasticizer concentration and plasticizer type) on final properties of films were observed. Corn-zein is the most important protein of corn and has good film forming property. Composites structures of PP films coated with corn-zein were obtained through a simple solvent casting method. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) and glycerol (GLY) were used as plasticizer to increase film flexibility. Statistical analysis based on full factorial design was performed to observe coating formulation effects. The high water vapour barriers were obtained for films coated with coating formulation consisting of higher amounts of corn-zein plasticized by GLY. The lower glass transition temperatures ( T g) of films were obtained by plasticization of films and T g decreased by increasing plasticizer content. The statistical analysis defined the key parameters of coating formulation that had major effects on the final properties of coated PP films as corn-zein, plasticizer concentration and plasticizer type. In conclusion, corn-zein coatings could have potential as an alternative to conventional synthetic polymers used in composite multilayer structures for food packaging applications. Langerhans' cell histiocytosis is a rare disease characterized histologically by the proliferation of Langerhans' cells. Oral involvement is frequent and the disease simulates severe localized periodontitis. In this report, we present a case of disseminated Langerhans' cell histiocytosis in a 30-month-old boy who had a mass covering the entire maxillopalatine region and suffered severe periodontal destruction in the posterior maxilla and mandible. Purpose: To investigate the association of pre-photorefractive keratectomy Schirmer-1 test value with post-photorefractive keratectomy central corneal epithelial thickness, ocular surface disease index score, and uncorrected distance visual acuity., Methods: Patients were categorized according to preoperative Schirmer-1 value: the normal Schirmer Group (n=54; Schirmer-1 test value, >10 mm) and the low Schirmer Group (n=52; Schirmer-1 test value, between 6 and 10 mm). We analyzed ablation depth, visual acuity, result of Schirmer-1 test (with anesthesia), tear film break-up time, ocular surface disease index score, central corneal epithelial thickness, and spherical equivalent refraction., Results: We found significant differences between the groups in Schirmer-1 test value, tear film break-up time, and ocular surface disease index score, both preoperatively and postoperatively (p<0.001). The preoperative central corneal epithelial thicknesses of the two groups were similar (p>0.05). After photorefractive keratectomy, the Schirmer-1 test value and spherical equivalent refraction decreased in both groups (p<0.05), and ocular surface disease index scores and central corneal epithelial thickness values increased in the low Schirmer Group (p<0.001) but not in the normal Schirmer Group (p>0.05). The postoperative central corneal epithelial thicknesses of the low Schirmer Group were significantly higher than those of the normal Schirmer Group (p<0.001). Postoperative uncorrected distance visual acuity did not differ significantly between the two groups (p>0.05)., Conclusions: In patients with low Schirmer-1 test values before photorefractive keratectomy, the corneal epithelium thickened and ocular surface complaints increased during the postoperative period. However, changes in the corneal epithelium did not affect the postoperative uncorrected distance visual acuity. To reduce postoperative problems on the ocular surface in these patients, we recommend that dry eye be treated before photorefractive keratectomy.

Introduction: Favipiravir has gained attention during the Coronavirus Disease-2019 pandemic due to its potential antiviral effect against Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2. Favipiravir has been identified as a teratogen in animal studies, but there is limited human data. We aimed to evaluate the pregnancy outcomes of women exposed to favipiravir during the pandemic., Material and Methods: Pregnant women who were exposed to favipiravir and applied to Marmara University School of Medicine Medical Pharmacology Outpatient Clinic Teratology Information Service between December 2020-September 2021 are included in the study. The demographic information, medical and obstetric histories of patients were acquired during admission, the outcomes of the pregnancies and the characteristics of the infants were gathered by regular phone calls. The infants whose parents consented were evaluated by a pediatrician for general well-being and congenital anomalies., Results: 22 pregnant women were included in this study. 81.8 % received the recommended favipiravir dose (8000 mg in 5 days), in the first trimester. Two patients were lost to follow-up, there was one elective termination and 19 live births. Congenital anomalies were found in 2 infants, one of whom had 9q34 duplication syndrome. Except for these, all newborns examined by the pediatrician were healthy., Discussion: Within a limited case series, a subset of the infants exposed to favipiravir prenatally were followed up to 1 year of age. Two infants exhibited congenital malformations that cannot be directly linked to favipiravir due to confounding variables. Background: Previous studies have generally focused on dry eye test abnormalities and ocular involvements such as uveitis, and blepharitis in psoriasis. Psoriasis area severity ındex (PASI), which is used to assess psoriasis severity, is a time-consuming and complex tool., Objective: To evaluate the relationship between disease severity and central corneal epithelial thickness (CCET) in psoriasis., Methods: 175 eyes of 175 psoriasis patients and 57 eyes of 57 healthy individuals as a control group was included in this study. Psoriasis patients were divided into three subgroups according to PASI score as < 10 mild, 10‒20 moderate and > 20 severe. CCET was measured by spectral domain-optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), and mean values were recorded. Mean CCET values were compared between the psoriasis groups and the control group. Additionally, the relationship between PASI score and CCET was examined., Results: The mean CCET value was 58.06±3.1μm in the mild group, 60.10±5.0μm in the moderate group, 65.75±6.3μm in the severe group and 56.16±3.1μm in the control group. It was determined that the mean CCET value was significantly higher in all psoriasis groups compared to the control group (p<0.001). The mean CCET value was significantly higher in the moderate psoriasis group than in the mild psoriasis group (p=0.018), and in the severe psoriasis group compared to the moderate psoriasis group (p<0.001). There was a strong positive correlation between PASI score and CCET (p<0.001, r=0.519)., Study Limitations: Cross-sectional design and a relatively small number of participants., Conclusions: There is a strong positive correlation between psoriasis severity and CCET. Purpose: To investigate clinical features and factors affecting visual prognosis after pediatric open-globe injuries., Methods: Retrospective study of 223 children with open-globe injury was conducted. Children with final logMAR visual acuity (LVA) > 0.70 were determined as poor-vision group (group 1, n = 108) and those with final LVA ≤ 0.70 as good-vision group (group 2, n = 115). Demographic characteristics (age, gender, and damaged eye), time between trauma and surgery, ocular trauma score (OTS), follow-up time, injury size, initial and final visual acuity levels, injury type (penetrating injury, globe rupture, perforating injury, and intraocular foreign body injury), injury localization (zone 1 = within the corneal and/or limbal area, zone 2 = within the scleral area extending 5 mm back from the limbus, and zone 3 = within the area posterior to zone 2), injury cause [metal objects (fork, knife, needle), broken glass, blunt objects (ball, punch), pen-pencil, and unidentified objects], and accompanying ocular findings of the groups were detected, and comparisons were done. Additionally, effects of age, time between trauma and surgery, OTS, injury size, follow-up time, initial LVA, injury type, and injury zone on final LVA were analyzed in both groups., Results: Mean age was 9.1 ± 2.0 years. There were 151 males and 72 females. Compared to group 1, group 2 had better initial and final visions (1.21 ± 0.26 vs 0.60 ± 0.28, p < 0.001 for initial LVA; 1.00 ± 0.32 vs 0.30 ± 0.13, p < 0.001 for final LVA), greater OTS (1.72 ± 0.53 vs 3.73 ± 0.61, p = 0.025), and smaller injury size (10.4 ± 3.5 vs 5.8 ± 2.4 mm, p = 0.002). Globe rupture (p = 0.015) and relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD) (p = 0.037) were higher in group 1, while penetrating injury (p = 0.044), zone 1 involvement (p = 0.038), and metal object injury (p = 0.041) were higher in group 2. Based on multivariate analysis, the presences of globe rupture (p = 0.024) and RAPD (p = 0.035), the involvement without zone 1 (p = 0.042), and the injury without metal object (fork, knife, needle) (p = 0.046) were associated with poor final vision. Final LVA (for group 1 and group 2) was negatively correlated with OTS (r =  - 0.398, p = 0.037; r =  - 0.369, p = 0.040), while positively correlated with injury size (r = 0.412, p = 0.031; r = 0.318, p = 0.046) and initial LVA (r = 0.335, p = 0.043; r = 0.402, p = 0.034)., Conclusion: In our study, poor prognostic factors affecting final vision were low OTS, poor initial vision, the presences of globe rupture and RAPD, the large injury size, the involvement without zone 1, and the injury without metal object (fork, knife, needle)., (© 2022. Purpose: The probability of the coexistence of conjunctivochalasis and pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PES) in the same individual may increase with aging. We investigated the effects of conjunctivochalasis accompanied by PES on the ocular surface (OS) and anterior segment (AS) structures., Methods: Cases with only conjunctivochalasis were determined as Group 1 (n = 62), cases with conjunctivochalasis accompanied by PES as Group 2 (n = 45), and healthy individuals as Group 3 (n = 56). The OS and AS parameters of the groups were compared., Results: There were a higher grade-3 conjunctivochalasis rate (17.7% vs. 46.7%, p = 0.039), a greater "mean grade of conjunctivochalasis" value (1.72 ± 0.24 vs. 2.29 ± 0.32, p = 0.036), and a higher "total conjunctivochalasis score" (4.27 ± 1.13 vs. 6.12 ± 1.35, p = 0.025) in Group 2 than in Group 1. Additionally, Group 2 had a shorter tear film break-up time (TBUT) (9.17 ± 2.53 vs. 5.41 ± 1.32, p = 0.010) and a greater OS disease index (OSDI) score (16.28 ± 3.15 vs. 27.36 ± 4.12, p = 0.037) than Group 1. Moreover, both Group 1 and Group 2 had shorter TBUTs (Group 1-3: p = 0.004; Group 2-3: p < 0.001) and greater OSDI scores (Group 1-3: p = 0.042; Group 2-3: p = 0.019) compared to Group 3. The groups' ocular surface staining scores, Schirmer 1 tests, central corneal thicknesses, keratometries, axial lengths, anterior chamber depths, lens thicknesses, and intraocular pressures were similar (p > 0.05)., Conclusions: To our knowledge, this was the first study comprehensively investigating the effects of conjunctivochalasis accompanied by PES on the OS and AS structures together. We found that conjunctivochalasis might cause the OS disease, while the presence of PES in conjunctivochalasis cases might worsen both the OS disease and conjunctivochalasis findings., (© 2022. Urgent measures were taken for those at the age of 65 and over who were at the risk group all over the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is known that many individuals at the age of 65 and over have experienced anxiety due to the uncertainties.This study aimed to determine the anxiety and death anxiety in individuals aged 65 and over who were isolation at home due to being diagnosed with COVID-19 or being in contact during the pandemic process.The study is descriptive and cross-sectional. It was performed with 656 home-quarantined individuals aged between 65-80 years with positive or negative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test result. A form including questions about the death anxiety and the Coronavirus Anxiety Scale Short Form prepared by the researchers were administered to the individuals by phone call.Of the participants, 49.5% were male. Median COVID-19 anxiety score was 4 (0-18). Anxiety scores of the male and female participants were similar. Participants with negative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) results and those with death anxiety had higher COVID anxiety scores. Death anxiety has increased by 1.661 times in male gender, 1.983 times in RT-PCR positivity and 0.146 times in the presence of symptoms.Individuals with positive COVID-19 test results or those aged 65 and over who had death anxiety and negative COVID-19 test result but who were in home-isolation due to being a contact had higher anxiety score. For this reason, those with death anxiety can be supported in line with their religious beliefs to reduce anxiety.Those with negative PCR test results in quarantine can be adequately informed about the COVID-19.

Chronic urticaria (CU) is a rare disease in childhood, and studies in children are limited. In this study, the aim was to investigate the clinical and laboratory findings and demographic characteristics of children with CU and to determine the factors affecting prognosis. The study included 141 patients aged 0-18 years who were diagnosed with CU in the pediatric allergy outpatient clinic between January 1, 2013, and December 31, 2018. Risk factors related to prognosis were investigated by comparing the duration of CU and treatment response with clinical and etiological features. IBM SPSS version 24 was used for statistical analyses. In the study group, the female/male ratio was 69/55, and the median age at first visit was 9.5 years (min:1, max:17). Among patients, 63 (44.5%) had an accompanying atopic disease, and 23 (16.3%) had chronic disease. Of the patients, 124 (88%) had chronic spontaneous urticaria, and 17 patients (12%) had chronic inducible urticaria (CIU). Of those with CIU, 72.2% had symptomatic dermographism, 16.7% had cholinergic urticaria, and 11.1% had cold urticaria. After the evaluations, the most common pathological findings in our patients were intestinal parasitosis (n = 14), anemia (n = 10), and urinary tract infection (n = 8). The median total duration of urticaria was 47 weeks (min:8, max:284). The duration of urticaria was longer in patients with atopy (p < 0.05), and the group that went into remission with standard-dose antihistamine was the group with highest eosinophil count (p = 0.022). In most children with CU, the underlying cause/disease cannot be determined. In our study, treatable triggers were found in some of the patients. Therefore, it is appropriate for each patient to be evaluated with selected laboratory tests after detailed history and physical examination., (© 2021 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Purpose: To compare clinical characteristics and ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) measurements of cases with functional and non-functional blebs, and to identify potential risk factors capable of affecting UBM parameters., Methods: Thirty-one patients aged 40-79 were included. Following trabeculectomy, cases were divided into two groups as those with functional bleb (Group 1, n  = 20) and those with non-functional bleb (Group 2, n  = 11). UBM was performed., Results: In Group 1 compared to Group 2, lower postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) (12.1 ± 1.7 vs 27.2 ± 3.2 mmHg, p  < 0.001), greater bleb height (1.0 ± 0.2 vs 0.5 ± 0.3 mm, p  < 0.001), greater scleral route visibility [16/20 (80%) vs 4/11 (36.4%), p  = 0.023] and lower bleb reflectivity (1.8 ± 0.2 vs 2.4 ± 0.4, p  = 0.015) were observed. In Group 1, as postoperative IOP decreased, bleb height and scleral route visibility increased ( r  = -0.387, p  = 0.029 for bleb height; r  = -0.374, p  = 0.033 for scleral route), and bleb reflectivity decreased ( r  = 0.359, p  = 0.042). In Group 1, as duration of preoperative antiglaucoma drug use increased, bleb reflectivity increased ( r  = 0.348, p  = 0.046). Preoperative IOP and number of preoperative antiglaucoma drug use had no effect on UBM parameters in groups ( p  > 0.05)., Conclusion: UBM is useful in assessing bleb success. Lower bleb reflectivity, greater bleb height and greater scleral route visibility indicate that the bleb is functional. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study investigating effects of preoperative IOP, number and duration of preoperative antiglaucoma drug use on UBM parameters. In cases with functional bleb, duration of preoperative drug use affects only bleb reflectivity, while postoperative IOP affects bleb height, scleral route visibility and bleb reflectivity.

A series of bis(triphenylamine)benzodifuran chromophores have been synthesized and fully characterised. Starting from suitably functionalized benzodifuran (BDF) precursors, two triphenylamine (TPA) moieties are symmetrically coupled to a central BDF unit either at 4,8-positions through double bonds ( 1 ) and single bonds ( 2 ) respectively, or at 2,6-positions through double bonds ( 3 ). Their electronic absorption and photoluminescence properties as well as redox behaviour have been investigated in detail, indicating that the π-extended conjugation via vinyl linkers in 1 and 3 leads to comparatively strong electronic interactions between the relevant redox moieties TPA and BDF. Due to intriguing electronic properties and structural planarity, 3a has been applied as a dopant emitter in organic light-emitting diodes. To investigate effects of beta blocker (BB; timolol or betaxolol), latanoprost, and latanoprost - timolol combination (LTC) drugs on corneal endothelial cell density (ECD) and central corneal thickness (CCT) in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) patients. Sixty-one patients in BB group, 64 patients in latanoprost group, 59 patients in LTC group, and 58 healthy cases in control group were included. Intraocular pressures (IOP), ECDs, and CCTs of groups were recorded at initial (pre-treatment) period, first and third years after treatment, and comparisons were done. In groups, changes of ECDs according to time were not significant ( p  > 0.05). In BB and control groups, changes of CCTs according to time were not significant ( p  > 0.05). In latanoprost and LTC groups, CCTs in both first and third years were significantly thinner than initial CCTs ( p  = 0.039 for latanoprost, p  = 0.041 for LTC at first year; p  = 0.018 for latanoprost, p  = 0.032 for LTC at third year). In latanoprost and LTC groups, CCTs of patients using drugs for 1 year were similar to those of patients using drugs for 3 years ( p  > 0.05). In our study, uses of BB, latanoprost or LTC did not affect ECD. BB drugs had no effect on CCT. Although latanoprost and LTC appeared to reduce CCT at 3-year follow-up from the statistical point of view, this 8-10 μm difference in CCT was not clinically significant.

The use of crystal engineering to control the supramolecular arrangement of π-conjugated molecules in the solid-state is of considerable interest for the development of novel organic electronic materials. In this study, we investigated the effect of combining of two types of supramolecular interaction with different geometric requirements, amide hydrogen bonding and π-interactions, on the π-overlap between calamitic π-conjugated cores. To this end, we prepared two series of bithiophene diesters and diamides with methylene, ethylene, or propylene spacers between the bithiophene core and the functional groups in their terminal substituents. The hydrogen-bonded bithiophene diamides showed significantly denser packing of the bithiophene cores than the diesters and other known α,ω-disubstituted bithiophenes. The bithiophene packing density reach a maximum in the bithiophene diamide with an ethylene spacer, which had the smallest longitudinal bithiophene displacement and infinite 1D arrays of electronically conjugated, parallel, and almost linear N-H⋅⋅⋅O=C hydrogen bonds. The synergistic hydrogen bonding and π-interactions were attributed to the favorable conformation mechanics of the ethylene spacer and resulted in H-type spectroscopic aggregates in solid-state absorption spectroscopy. These results demonstrate that the optoelectronic properties of π-conjugated materials in the solid-state may be tailored systematically by side-chain engineering, and hence that this approach has significant potential for the design of organic and polymer semiconductors., (© 2020 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Purpose: To determine early ocular changes in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus without retinopathy (T1DM-woR) by optical biometry (OB) and optical coherence tomography (OCT)., Methods: Seventy children and adolescents with T1DM-woR (patient group) and 72 healthy children and adolescents (control group) were included. Demographic data, anthropometric measurements and anterior-posterior segment parameters of groups were compared. Correlations between ocular parameters and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) level, age at diabetes mellitus (DM) onset and DM duration were evaluated., Results: Patients with T1DM-woR had significantly shallower anterior chambers (3.50 ± 0.12 vs 3.67 ± 0.11 mm, p < 0.001), thicker lenses (3.65 ± 0.15 vs 3.37 ± 0.14 mm, p < 0.001), thinner central retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thicknesses (95.3 ± 6.7 vs 104.8 ± 6.2 µm, p < 0.001) and thinner central choroidal thicknesses (292.8 ± 23.6 vs 325.1 ± 24.7 µm, p < 0.001) than healthy individuals. As the lens thickness (LT) increased, anterior chamber depth (ACD) decreased in patient group (r = - 0.368, p = 0.040). Other anterior (central corneal thickness, axial length, keratometry, spherical equivalent) and posterior (superior temporal, superior nasal, nasal, inferior nasal, inferior temporal, temporal RNFL thicknesses; nasal and temporal choroidal thicknesses; central part's and inner-outer macular segments' thickness and volume measurements) segment parameters of groups were similar (p > 0.05). In patient group, as HbA1c level increased, central RNFL and choroidal thicknesses decreased (r = - 0.639, p < 0.001; r = - 0.486, p = 0.010, respectively)., Conclusions: In patients with T1DM, we found that LT increased, and ACD, central RNFL and choroidal thicknesses decreased by OB and OCT before visible findings appeared in routine ophthalmological examination. Determination of early changes is warning to physician and patient in order to prevent more serious damages occurring later.

Crystalline thin films of π-conjugated molecules are relevant as the active layers in organic electronic devices. Therefore, materials with enhanced control over the supramolecular arrangement, crystallinity, and thin-film morphology are desirable. Herein, it is reported that hydrogen-bonded substituents serve as additional structure-directing elements that positively affect crystallization, thin-film morphology, and device performance of p-type organic semiconductors. It is observed that a quaterthiophene diacetamide exhibits a denser packing than that of other quaterthiophenes in the single-crystal structure and, as a result, displays enhanced intermolecular electronic interactions. This feature was preserved in crystalline thin films that exhibited a layer-by-layer morphology, with large domain sizes and high internal order. As a result, organic field-effect transistors of these polycrystalline thin films showed mobilities in the range of the best mobility values reported for single-crystalline quaterthiophenes. Purpose: To compare the effects of 180° and 360° selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) on intraocular pressure (IOP) and cornea in patients with bilateral primary open-angle glaucoma., Methods: Fifty-two eyes of 26 patients were included. On the same day, 180° SLT (Group 1) was applied to one eye of patients and 360° SLT (Group 2) to the other eye. IOP values were compared at pre-SLT and post-SLT 1 day, 1 week, 1, 3, and 6 months. Changes in central corneal thickness (CCT) and endothelial cell count (ECC) were examined., Results: In groups, significant decreases were observed in IOP at 1 week (p < 0.05), 1, 3, and 6 months (p < 0.001). No significant difference was determined between group 1 and 2 in IOP-lowering effectiveness or success rates (p > 0.05). There was no significant difference in CCT at inter- or intragroup comparisons (p > 0.05). In group 1, no significant difference was determined in pre- and post-SLT ECC (p > 0.05). In group 2, significant decrease in ECC was observed at 1 week (p < 0.05). However, ECC returned to its initial levels at 1 month., Conclusions: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study in literature to compare different quadrant SLT applications performed on both eyes, on the same day, in the same patient group and to compare the effects of those applications on IOP and cornea. In reducing IOP, 180° and 360° SLT are similarly effective. These effects begin on the 1st week and persist for 6 months. Temporary corneal changes may be observed following 360° SLT.

Objective: Macular damage may be observed in obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS), a condition which leads to chronic subclinical inflammation and affects most organ systems. To investigate the association between macular variability and anthropometric measurements, metabolic parameters, and inflammatory markers in children and adolescents with MetS., Methods: Two hundred and twenty eyes of 62 obese and 48 healthy children and adolescents were examined. Bilateral macular retinal thickness (MRT) and macular retinal volume (MRV) were measured in all subjects using optical coherence tomography. Associations between mean MRT and mean MRV and age, auxological measurements including body mass index standard deviation scores (BMI-SDS) and waist circumference-SDS (WC-SDS), metabolic parameters and inflammatory parameters including neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio and systemic immune-inflammatory index (SIII) were investigated., Results: No statistically significant difference was observed between the groups in terms of age or sex distribution (p>0.05). Mean MRT (r=-0.326, p=0.007) and MRV (r=-0.303, p=0.007) values in the obese group with MetS decreased as homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) values increased. SIII values were higher in obese groups, but particularly in obese subject with MetS, compared to the control group (p=0.021). The decrease in mean MRT (r=-0.544, p=0.046) and MRV (r=-0.651, p=0.031) in the obese subjects with MetS was negatively correlated with NLR. Mean MRT and MRV decreased in all obese subjects as SIII increased (p<0.05)., Conclusion: This is the first study to show that mean MRT and MRV values decrease as BMI-SDS, WC-SDS and HOMA-IR increase in obese children and adolescents with MetS. NLR and SIII may serve as markers of chronic inflammation in obese children with MetS associated with macular damage.
