Understanding crop performance and productivity in relation to intercropped tree species, tree management and prevailing environmental conditions may assist farmers in managing agroforestry systems appropriately. Our study evaluated the management and spatial effect of six dominant tree species (Eucalyptus spp., Sesbania sesban, Grevillea robusta, Calliandra calothyrsus, Markhamia lutea and Croton macrostachyus) on water availability and crop performance in smallholders' maize fields in Rift valley, Kenya. Maize performance under C. macrostachyus and M. lutea was also evaluated at on-station experiment in the same area. The smallholder farmers in the study area remain important maize producers in Kenya with an average maize yield of 6.5 tons ha−1 recorded. Maize yield under the dominant tree species in studied smallholder farms showed significant differences (P < 0.001) with leguminous species (C. calothyrsus and S. sesban) recording the highest amount of grain weight. Farmers selectively prune tree they perceive as competitive but still want to maintain them in the farms such as Eucalyptus spp. and G. robusta but miss to equally prune M. lutea and C. macrostachyus which would greatly improve performance of associated crops. In addition to presence of great tree management diversity, the study clearly showed that tree in smallholder farms either have competitive, complementary or balanced-off interaction with crops. Lastly, despite the adequate rainfall throughout the cropping season, dominant tree species in smallholder farms were shown to significantly (P < 0.0001) influence the spatial distribution of soil water. Agroforestry can improve soil conservation and overall farm productivity compared with sole-crop systems, but its benefits are limited by competitive interactions between tree and crop components. Studies on light competition have been performed on relatively flat land, but slope can influence light distribution. Little is known about optimizing light utilization and enhancing system productivity and/or income from agroforestry on sloping land. This study examined how slope influences light distribution and performance of maize and coffee crops in fruit tree-crop agroforestry. Starting hypotheses were that 1) crops upslope of tree rows receive and intercept greater amounts of light than those downslope; and 2) position of the crop is more important for light interception and yield when fruit trees have a large, dense canopy. Five-year-old fruit-crop agroforestry experiments on west-southwest facing slopes were revisited. Each agroforestry treatment was divided into nine zones relative to the tree rows (zone 5), with zones 1-4 upslope and 6-9 downslope of the fruit tree row. Light distribution was assessed using Hemiview and SunScan and compared with that in sole-maize and sole-coffee systems. Crop growth and yield were also recorded. Incident light to the crop was higher in the sole-crop system than in agroforestry. In agroforestry, incident light to the crops was lower downslope of trees than upslope but increased with increasing distance from the tree rows. On average, 0.40-0.50 fraction of total light reached the soil surface. Downslope had a stronger negative effect on light distribution and crop yield than upslope. The available light at the soil surface provides scope for additional components. Agricultural production systems are affected by complex interactions between social and ecological factors, which are often hard to integrate in a common analytical framework. We evaluated differences in crop production among farms by integrating components of several related research disciplines in a single socio-ecological analysis. Specifically, we evaluated spring barley (Hordeum vulgare, L.) performance on 34 farms (organic and conventional) in two agro-ecological zones to unravel the importance of ecological, crop and management factors in the performance of a standard crop. We used Projections to Latent Structures (PLS), a simple but robust analytical tool widely utilized in research disciplines dealing with complex systems (e.g. social sciences and chemometrics), but infrequently in agricultural sciences. We show that barley performance on organic farms was affected by previous management, landscape structure, and soil quality, in contrast to conventional farms where external inputs were the main factors affecting biomass and grain yield. This indicates that more complex management strategies are required in organic than in conventional farming systems. We conclude that the PLS method combining socio-ecological and biophysical factors provides improved understanding of the various interacting factors determining crop performance and can help identify where improvements in the agricultural system are most likely to be effective.

Many parts of the world are investigating the efficacy of recycling nutrient resources to agriculture from different industry and domestic sectors as part of a more circular economy. The complex nature of recycled products as soil amendments coupled to the large diversity of soil types and their inherent properties make it difficult to optimize the benefits and minimize the risks from potentially toxic elements often present in recycled materials. Here we investigated how wheat grain cadmium (Cd) concentration was affected by soil amendments, namely human urine and biogas digestate compared to traditional farm manures and mineral fertilizers. We show that Cl(-) inadvertently added to soils with e.g. urine or biogas digestate strongly increased crop Cd concentrations, largely by mobilizing inherent soil Cd. This resulted in wheat grain Cd levels that could result in exceeding recommended WHO limits for dietary intake. This was evident even in soils with low inherent Cd content and when Cd inputs were low. The future of a circular economy that helps to underpin global food security needs to ensure that the effects of applying complex materials to different types of agricultural land are fully understood and do not jeopardize food safety., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier B.V.
