Abstract

ABSTRACT We evaluated the replacement of neutral detergent fibre levels from forage (NDFfor) by cottonseed cake on the performance, and carcass and meat traits of Nellore young bulls finished in a feedlot. Individual data from 24 Nellore young bulls with 330 ± 4.54 kg of body weight (BW) and 18 ± 1 months old were used. The animals were randomly distributed in four nutritional treatments containing 9.5%; 5.5%; 2.5%; and 0.0% NDF from whole corn plant silage (forage source), replaced by cottonseed cake, in the total diet. Animal performance and carcass and meat characteristics were analysed by orthogonal polynomial regression. A positive quadratic effect was observed for DM, CP, EE, NDF, and physically effective NDF intake (peNDFI8 mm, and peNDFI1.18 mm). There was no NDFfor‐level effect for final weight, hot carcass weight, carcass yield, internal and external depth, carcass length, pH, subcutaneous fat thickness, and loin eye area. A positive quadratic effect was detected for average daily gain. Feed efficiency demonstrated a positive quadratic trend, reaching an optimum peak level when young bulls 4.01% of NDFfor. There was no NDFfor‐level effect for meat and fat colour variables. The NDFfor‐level with the highest DM intake (2.01% BW) was 5.15%, and the highest ADG (1.54 kg/day) was 4.91% of NDFfor. Thus, although NDFfor levels did not affect carcass characteristics, fat, and meat colour, levels between 4.50% and 5.15% NDF from forage replaced by cottonseed cake are recommended to enhance the productive performance of feedlot Nellore young bulls. Abstract

Simple Summary: The slaughter of females represents a significant proportion of all cattle slaughtered in Brazil. Despite this, the number of studies on the quality of the carcasses and meat of these animals is still low, which leads to less knowledge about the quality and commercial value of the meat. The aim of this study was to evaluate the carcass and meat quality of heifers from different genetic groups fed diets containing different sources of nonprotein nitrogen. The main differences found were in relation to the genetic group, with effects on carcass weight, fat content in the carcass and meat, and also on the fatty acid profile of the meat. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of genetic groups and diets with different sources of nonprotein nitrogen (NPN) on the carcass and meat characteristics of beef heifers. The meat from 40 heifers (20 ½ Angus ½ Nellore (A × N) and 20 ½ Charolais ½ Nellore (L × N)), finished in feedlots, was used. The heifers were fed diets containing different sources of NPN—(1) a diet with livestock urea and protected urea (LPU) and (2) a diet with extruded urea (EU)—in a completely randomized design with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. Carcass, composition and meat quality evaluations were carried out. There were no significant interactions between diet and genetic group for most of the variables evaluated (p > 0.05). The A × N heifers had higher hot carcass weights (305.73 vs. 279.80 kg), loin eye areas (80.87 vs. 75.45 cm2), subcutaneous fat thicknesses (8.69 vs. 6.35 mm) and lower shear forces (6.98 vs. 7.7 kg) compared to the C × N heifers (p < 0.05). The meat from the A × N heifers had higher proportions of saturated fatty acids (49.41 vs. 47.95%), with no effects on the proportions of monounsaturated (47.57%) and polyunsaturated (4.01%) fatty acids. Abstract

It aimed to estimate the forage intake by lambs managed in different leaf allowances on Brachiaria-grass using internal and external markers. Forty-eight Texel lambs with 17.52 ± 3.48 kg were evaluated which were 12 testers and 36 regulators. The lambs were kept in twelve paddocks, subdivided into four treatments based on green leaf allowance (60, 75, 90, and 105 g/kg of BW). The experimental design was completely randomised. To estimate dry matter intake (DMI), the following markers were used: indigestible dry matter (iDM); indigestible neutral detergent fibre (iNDF); indigestible acid detergent fibre (iADF); lignin in indigestible acid detergent (iADL) and titanium dioxide (TiO2). Comparisons between intake markers were made using Chromic Oxide (Cr2O3) as a control marker. The leaves allowance tested did not alter the voluntary intake by lambs kept in Brachiaria-grass pasture. Comparison between the control intake marker (Cr2O3) and the other markers by Dunnett's test showed that, regardless of green leaf allowance, the Cr2O3, TiO2 and iADL markers provided similar estimates of DMI, but with lower values than the other markers. External marker TiO2 and the internal iADL were demonstrated to be more suitable for estimating the dry matter intake in grazing lambs regardless of the leaf allowance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The objective was to investigate the effects of increasing levels of extruded urea (EU) in the supplementation of lambs grazing. Crossbred Texel lambs (n = 45) were used and kept in continuous grazing in paddocks with Brachiaria spp. The design used was completely randomised, with five of EU replacing soybean meal (0; 6; 12; 18 and 24 g/kg) and two sexes (male and female). The animals were slaughtered, and qualitative and quantitative evaluations of the carcass, non-carcass components, meat quality and chemical composition were carried out. There was an interaction between level*sex for ether extract (EE) and crude protein (CP), so than the meat of the females from the treatment without EU had a higher content of EE than that used EU and the meat of the males from the treatments with 12 g and 24 g 100 kg−1 LW higher levels of CP than other treatments. For all measurements performed up to 18 g 100 kg−1 LW of EU replacing bran and soy, the results were promising, and can be fed to finishing lambs under grazing, without negatively influencing most of the carcass characteristics, components non-carcass, meat quality and chemical composition.
