1. Impacts d’un changement de politiques énergétiques sur les exploitations irriguées : éclairage sur la base d’un échantillon d’exploitations dans le Saiss (Maroc)

Abstract: Au Maroc, le gaz butane est fortement subventionné pour son usage domestique, et est devenu depuis une dizaine d’années une des sources principales d’énergie utilisées pour le pompage de l’eau souterraine dans les exploitations agricoles. Du fait de son coût élevé pour les finances publiques, il est envisagé un arrêt de cette subvention, couplé à une éventuelle subvention à l’investissement en énergie solaire. La présente étude analyse l’impact de scénarios d’évolutions des politiques énergétiques nationales sur des exploitations irrigantes. Ces évolutions possibles de type d’énergie utilisé sont analysées à la fois en termes de rentabilité et selon le point de vue de l’exploitant lui-même. Un ensemble de 18 exploitations, utilisant 4 différents types d’énergie (gasoil, butane, électrique, photovoltaïque), ont été enquêtées dans la plaine du Saiss. Trois scénarios ont été établis : 1) un arrêt de la subvention au butane ; 2) un arrêt de la subvention couplé à une subvention à l’investissement dans l’énergie solaire ; et 3) un arrêt de la subvention butane couplé à une subvention à l’investissement dans l’énergie électrique. Les résultats montrent que, en cas d’arrêt de la subvention sur le butane, la moitié des exploitants utilisant le butane lors de l’étude envisagent de revenir au gasoil. En cas de subvention de 50% des coûts d’installation de l’énergie photovoltaïque, trois quarts des agriculteurs utilisant le butane ou le gasoil changeraient de système. Seule la moitié des exploitations en butane ou gasoil serait intéressée par un passage à l’électrique, même dans le cas d’une forte subvention à l’investissement. La transition vers le photovoltaïque, préférée par les agriculteurs utilisant le butane ou le gasoil, ne sera pas cependant qu’une question de taux de subvention, du fait notamment d’un fort besoin d’appui technique pour la conception d’un tel système au niveau des exploitations. Par ailleurs, elle devra être liée à la mise en oeuvre de mécanismes de régulation spécifiques de façon à ne pas contribuer à une augmentation de l’utilisation des ressources en eau souterraines.

Abstract: Green energy or sources with zero-carbon emissions plays a leading role in the worldwide electrification. Electric machinery field is a subject of attention leading to the green technology. These machines contribute mainly in the context of industrial applications as electric or hybrid cars. Avoiding the issue and price of rare-earth magnets, potential researches contribute particularly to non-rare-earth machines. For that reasons, this thesis studies the ferrite motor through the ‘Spoke Type Axial Flux Permanent Magnet’ (STAFPM) topology. One from the main interesting properties of this motor is the capability of the no-load magnetic flux concentration in its airgap. The properties of this motor with ferromagnetic poles in the rotor are not so-well known. The present thesis focuses on studying its performances. Achieving this goal, consists firstly by doing a review on the analytical and numerical sizing approaches applied for radial and axial flux machines based on the magnetic field models and as well as, a review on the experimental test benchmark for salient-pole machines which provide us the identification and computation of the electromechanical parameters. Finally, a revision takes place on the 3D magnetic field modeling for sizing purposes. Thus the first section is partially devoted to review the application of the 3D finite difference method for axial machines which is a main objective in this thesis. Afterwards, using a 1D analytical model, a performance comparison takes place between a single stator-single rotor STAFPM motor and a reference Surface Mounted Axial Flux Permanent Magnet (SMAFPM) motor. This comparison is made on the electromagnetic torque and at unified parameters. Consequently, new STAFPM prototype is sized by a consideration of some magnetic constraints. This prototype takes place on a test bench. An original method of the experimental identification of the parameters of the lumped parameter electromechanical model is developed. This method is based on the static torque measurement as a function of the rotor position. A 3D numerical magnetic field model of the STAFPM motor is proposed. This tool studies the no-load magnetic field as well as the armature reaction fields. An original flux calculation method in the framework of the magnetic scalar potential formulation is developed. This method allows the quick calculation of the parameters of the lumped electromechanical model. The calculated parameters are compared to the experimentally identified parameters.

6. Modélisation et conception d’une machine synchro-réluctante assistée d’aimants permanents intégrant les contraintes du pilotage sans capteur de position

Abstract: Cette thèse est dédiée à la modélisation analytique et à la conception optimale d’une machine du type synchro-réluctante assistée d'aimants permanents (MSRAP) en tenant compte des aspects liés au pilotage sans capteur de position. Dans un premier temps, la thèse vise à montrer, à partir d’une étude bibliographique, les avantages économiques et la sûreté de fonctionnement d’un pilotage sans capteur de position. Les méthodes d'injection de signaux à haute fréquence sont les plus adaptées pour des fonctionnements à basse vitesse en raison de leur facilité de mise en oeuvre. Cependant elles dépendent fortement des paramètres de la machine tels que le rapport de saillance incrémentale. Dans des applications dédiées au secteur de la manutention qui se caractérise par des sur-couples importants au démarrage, l’injection de signaux haute fréquence devient non-opérationnelle en raison du faible rapport de saillance incrémentale induit par une forte saturation de la machine. L'objectif est d’intégrer ce problème lors de la phase de conception de la machine. La géométrie du rotor des moteurs MSRAP est complexe car elle dépend d’un nombre de paramètres importants tels que la position, le nombre et la forme des barrières de flux. C'est pourquoi une analyse basée sur des simulations par éléments finis est réalisée afin d'identifier les paramètres géométriques les plus influents sur les performances et le rapport de saillance incrémentale. Cette étude permettra d’évaluer la sensibilité de paramètres tels que le nombre de barrières et l’entrefer dont la variation peut dégrader le rapport de saillance et en même temps améliorer les performances de la machine. D'autres paramètres comme l'inclinaison des barrières sont bénéfiques pour la performance et pour le pilotage sans capteur de position. Afin de concevoir la machine à l'aide d'algorithmes d'optimisation, il est indispensable de développer des modèles précis et rapides. Les optimisations basées sur des modèle éléments finis sont certes précises mais aussi très consommatrices en temps de calcul. Nous proposons dans cette étude de développer un modèle basé sur des équations analytiques en utilisant les principes de la loi d'Ampère et de la conservation du flux. Afin d'obtenir la distribution spatiale de l'induction dans l'entrefer, entité de base pour le calcul des performances et des inductances incrémentales du moteur, un système d’équations est mis en place et résolu. Ces moteurs étant par ailleurs généralement alimentés par des onduleurs, un second modèle analytique est développé afin de déterminer le contenu harmonique des courants d’alimentation. Dans une première optimisation du couple nominal de la MSRAP, deux logiciels basés sur des algorithmes déterministes ont été testés : fmincon de Matlab et NOMAD. Nous avons pu noter la supériorité des résultats et la robustesse du logiciel NOMAD par rapport à fmincon pour la résolution d'un problème avec 18 variables et 15 contraintes complexes. NOMAD a donc été utilisé pour deux autres optimisations bi-objectifs incluant le rendement et le coût des matières premières, et où le couple, la tension, le facteur de puissance et le rapport de saillance incrémentale sont définis comme des contraintes. Chaque modèle analytique ainsi que les gains obtenus dans le cadre de cette thèse sont validés par des simulations éléments finis, des simulations sous Simulink Matlab et par des essais expérimentaux avec une machine existante.

7. High-Voltage engineering and applications in our modern society

Abstract: Electrical energy is polymorphic, with voltage levels varying between a few volts to MVs and frequencies from a few Hz to MHz. This variability offers flexibility of use. For engineering applications, the choices of electrical parameters are dictated by technical and/or economic criteria. For example: - In aviation, frequencies from 400 Hz to a few kHz are used. - Energies produced at power stations are increased to kV levels with the step-up transformers to reduce Joule losses in long-distance transportations [1,2]. Consequently, many AC–DC transmission line projects up to 1200 kV have been constructed or are under way in many countries [3–15]. The application of high voltage in electrical power transmission is the most common, but electrical engineers also use this know-how in many other fields (e.g., [15–21]). Table 1 lists some of the main applications.

8. Etude de l'impact des caractérisations et des modes opératoires sur le vieillissement d'une pile à combustible à membrane échangeuse de protons haute température (PEM-HT)

Abstract: La contribution du transport aérien au réchauffement climatique est revue à la hausse par la prise en compte d’émissions complémentaires à celles directes du CO2. Aussi, les principaux avionneurs prévoient une croissance importante du trafic aérien qui nécessiterait le doublement de la flotte actuelle d’avions pour 2035. Parallèlement, l’ensemble du secteur s'est engagé à réduire ses émissions. C’est dans ce contexte que s’inscrit le projet PIPAA (PIle à combustible Pour Applications Aéronautiques), projet porté par SAFRAN Power Units comportant quatre thèses qui étudient le potentiel de la pile à combustible à membrane échangeuse de protons haute température (HT-PEMFC) pour le secteur aéronautique. L’objectif final de cet ensemble d’études est de permettre une meilleure compréhension des phénomènes qui caractérisent la HT-PEMFC afin de l’intégrer dans un système autonome de génération électrique embarqué pour avions d’affaires. Les travaux effectués lors de cette thèse concernent des mono-cellules HT-PEMFC et s’inscrivent dans la continuité directe de ceux de la thèse de Sylvain Rigal portant sur la modélisation et le vieillissement de la HT-PEMFC. L’objectif principal de ces travaux est de quantifier la dégradation que pourraient apporter les phases de caractérisation de la pile, en particulier la courbe de polarisation, pendant des campagnes de vieillissement. Il s’agit d’identifier les phénomènes dégradants provoqués lors de ce type de caractérisation et de proposer une méthodologie non dégradante de réalisation des courbes de polarisation en HT-PEMFC. Dans ce sens, une campagne expérimentale de cyclage de profils de courant permettant de réaliser des courbes de polarisation a été effectuée. Elle a permis de comprendre les potentielles dégradations susceptibles de se produire lors de ces caractérisations. Afin de permettre une comparaison fiable des résultats, une étude sur la sensibilité de la tension à la pression atmosphérique a été menée et son impact sur les analyses a été démontré. Deux propositions de méthodologies de recalage de la tension aux conditions opératoires ont alors été analysées et appliquées. D’autres travaux complémentaires de modélisation ont aussi été poursuivis. En complément de la démarche précédente et suite à une fiabilisation du matériel d’essai et à la mise en place de nouveaux modes opératoires lors de ces travaux de thèse, des perspectives sur le vieillissement calendaire et sur l’interprétation des spectroscopies d’impédance électrochimique ont été proposées.

Abstract: Since the development of power electronic components, which allowed the manufacturing of reliable and efficient inverters, variable speed drives using inductive motors have become more and more popular. The pulsewidth modulation (PWM) technique has proven to be a very effective method of rotational speed control. However, the fast-changing voltage pulses, with very steep slopes (in the order of a few kilovolt/microsecond), have brought new hazards for the electrical insulation system of such motors. Very high frequency harmonic components of PWM voltage will result in significant overvoltage due to an impedance mismatch between the cable and the motor. As an effect, the voltage seen by some parts of the insulation system may exceed the partial discharge inception voltage stating the localized partial discharges activity. The aim of this article is to investigate and analyze the aging process of the enameled wire exposed to different factors and to propose a method allowing them to predict their lifespans in given conditions. This study introduces a prediction based on the design of experiments method and the statistical Weibull distribution. Thanks to the model obtained with short multistress aging tests, it is possible to predict the results of significantly longer ones. Moreover, the adopted methodology is proposed that allows us to predict the scatter of the long tests based on the short-time results dispersion. The same approach is used to compare different products between each other and rank them. All model predictions are compared with the experimental data in order to prove the model accuracy.

Abstract: L’histoire du lexique français de l’énergie électrique commence dans la première moitié du XVIIIe siècle, quand les recherches autour de l’électricité se multiplient en Europe et aux Etats-Unis. Au fil des décennies, les transformations de l’électricité ont contribué au développement des sciences et des techniques, de la physique à la médecine, aussi bien qu’au bouleversement de l’industrie, du monde des transports et de la vie domestique. C’est en examinant les étapes principales de cette terminologie, en observant les termes les plus significatifs ainsi que les différentes typologies textuelles qui en ont marqué l’évolution, que l’on parvient à une meilleure compréhension d’un secteur si remarquable aux niveaux économique, institutionnel et social.

11. Caractérisation et modélisation en régimes statique et dynamique d'un stack pile à combustible à oxyde solide de température intermédiaire (IT-SOFC)

Abstract: Les travaux de cette thèse s’inscrivent dans le cadre du projet SOFAERO (Piles à combustible hautes températures SOFC pour applications aéronautiques), porté par le laboratoire LAPLACE en partenariat avec Safran Power Units. Ce projet porte sur l’étude des composants de technologie SO et l’évaluation de leurs potentialités dans un environnement aéronautique. Au cours de ces travaux de thèse, nous nous sommes concentrés sur le fonctionnement des piles à combustible à oxyde solide de température intermédiaire 650°C (IT-SOFC, Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cell). La première partie du manuscrit retranscrit la culture que nous avons acquise sur les composants SO allant des matériaux composant une cellule jusqu’à l’intégration de cette technologie dans des systèmes. La seconde partie expose les moyens d’essais utilisés et les premières campagnes d’essais réalisées. Dans la troisième partie, nous proposons un modèle quasi-statique de la cellule moyenne équivalente d’un stack IT-SOFC, modèle adapté des travaux menés au sein du laboratoire LAPLACE sur les technologies à membranes échangeuses de protons (PEM, Proton Exchange Membrane) basse température et plus récemment haute température. Une des hypothèses fortes pour cette modélisation est que nous avons considéré une température interne constante et homogène au sein du stack lors du tracé des courbes de polarisation. Dans une quatrième partie, nous discutons de cette hypothèse en proposant une modélisation tenant compte cette fois-ci de la variation de température lors du tracé des courbes de polarisation. Dans ce contexte, nous exposons une méthode originale que nous avons développée afin d’estimer la température interne du stack sans avoir recours à des mesures de température internes (inexistantes sur le composant testé). Cette quatrième partie se poursuit en exposant nos premiers travaux sur la modélisation dynamique d’un stack IT-SOFC, via la modélisation des spectres d’impédance mesurés conjointement avec les courbes de polarisation.

Abstract: Electricity access to rural areas in third world countries is still a big problem. Second-life components can present a good solution for these areas as solar PV (Photo-Voltaic) panels can still be used after twenty five years of use. PSUs (power supply units) from computers can be used as solar charge controllers after just a little change while batteries can also be used in their second-life when they are eliminated from their first use. This second life use of electrical components is done with the frugal innovation principles. But using batteries in second-life requires SoH accurate measurement which is still difficult with already existing methods especially when history of battery is unknown. In this paper, a new method is introduced based on short discharge of the battery. This method is cheap, fast, reliable and accurate enough for second-life batteries. A second-life battery means that when a battery is done for its life but still it can be used for small load than before. The method can be applied in two different ways and maximum error for both variations is around 10% which is very much acceptable for second-life batteries. The well-known two-pulse method is also performed to compare results for same conditions and error can be as high as 55% in some cases. The method is equally good for flooded (car) and AGM (solar) lead-acid batteries. The method introduced in the paper highly relies on SoC accurate measurement. Here, two-pulse method is used as SoC measurement method with short discharge method.

Abstract: In 2019, transportation was the fastest growing sector, contributing to environmental degradation. Finding sustainable solutions that pollute less is a key element in solving this problem, particularly for the aviation sector, which accounts for around 2-3% of global CO2 emissions. With the advent of Covid-19, air traffic seems to have come to a fairly permanent halt, but this pandemic reinforces the need to move towards a "cleaner sky" and respect for the environment, which is the objective of the Clean Sky2 program (H2020 EU), the context in which the HASTECS project has been launched in September 2016.

Abstract: International audience; Carbon-carbon supercapacitors are high power electrochemical energy storage systems which store energy through reversible ion adsorption at the electrode-electrolyte interface. Due to the complex structure of the porous carbons used as electrodes, extracting structure-property relationships in these systems remains a challenge. In this work, we conduct molecular simulations of two model supercapacitors based on nanoporous electrodes with the same average pore size, a property often used when comparing porous materials, but different morphologies. We show that the carbon with the more ordered structure, with a well defined pore size, has a much higher capacitance than the carbon with the more disordered structure, and broader pore size distribution. We analyze the structure of the confined electrolyte and show that the ions adsorbed in the ordered carbon are present in larger quantities and are also more confined than for the disordered carbon. Both aspects favor a better charge separation and thus a larger capacitance. In addition, the disordered electrodes contain a significant amount of carbon atoms which are never in contact with the electrolyte, carry a close to zero charge and are thus not involved in the charge storage. The total quantities of adsorbed ions and degrees of confinement do not change much with the applied potential and as such, this work opens the door to computationally tractable screening strategies.

Abstract: Tremendous efforts have been dedicated to developing high-performance energy storage devices based on the micro- or nano-manipulation of novel carbon electrodes, as certain nanocarbons are perceived to have advantages such as high specific surface areas, superior electric conductivities, excellent mechanical properties and so on. In typical electrochemical electrodes, ions are intercalated/deintercalated into/from the bulk (for batteries) or adsorbed/desorbed on/from the surface (for electrochemical capacitors). Fast ionic transport, significantly determined by ionic channels in active electrodes or supporting materials, is a prerequisite for the efficient energy storage with carbons. In this report, we summarize recent design strategies for ionic channels in novel carbons and give comments on the promising features based on those carbons towards tailorable ionic channels.

Abstract: Rural electrification could be a very effective factor for economic and social development in many developing countries. Renewable energies which are generally available in these countries play a central role to limit the global footprint of the systems. Beside, brand new western systems are generally not affordable enough for many populations. Frugal innovation based on re-used materials combines several advantages: it contributes to global footprint reduction and offers very cheap solutions. In this framework, this paper studies the possibility of re-using reused components in renewable system, includingold lead acid batteries disposed from thermal engine cars. Before giving a second life to these batteries, their state of health need to be assessed, rapidly but precisely. To achieve this goal, with some recycled power electronics devices, Power Supply Unit (PSU) from discarded desktops and a cheap microcontroller with replace the expensive test devices that we generally have in our labs. The objective is using modified PSUs to apply battery evaluation methods (two pulses method and spectroscopy method) to the batteries and assessing the results.

Abstract: Cette étude aborde le problème de l’identification in situ des paramètres d’un modèle de transformateur mis en œuvre dans une chaine de traction ferroviaire. Le modèle considéré permet de rendre compte du comportement non linéaire de l’inductance magnétisante du transformateur. L’identification se base sur des données expérimentales où le cycle B(H) n’est pas considéré dans son intégralité. Des résultats expérimentaux et des simulations sont comparés afin de valider la démarche et le modèle.

Abstract: The Northern region of Brazil has historically stood out as a space with natural potential that has always awakened public and private concerns regarding the exploitation of resources and recently the development of large projects. From the extraction of latex to current mining projects, as in the Grande Carajás project, these ventures have been seen as imperative to establish new conditions of integration and even improvements for the northern part of the country. Together, a new force intensified from the second half of the twentieth century as an element and central pillar so that all these undertakings could be realized. Energy production thus became a goal and synonymous with exploiting the potential of the Amazon, entering complacent spaces and producing new narratives about this region. This article proposes to debate how transformations occurred between the planning process and a non-existent structuring of this sector in the Eastern Amazon. Taking as a motto the documentary production of companies involved in this process, such as Eletronorte, Celpa and Eletrobrás, as well as by observing the debates that permeated government media and speeches, the article seeks to bring subsidies to understand how the paths followed by these projects, from the present to the past , are apprehended as dynamic elements of a region, but that historically have not consolidated a real execution focused on the interests and needs of this space. La région nord du Brésil a toujours été mise en évidence comme un espace détenant des potentialités naturelles qui ont toujours suscité des intérêts publics et privés en ce qui concerne l’exploitation des ressources et, récemment, le développement de grands projets. De l’extraction de latex aux projets miniers en cours, tels que le projet de Grande Carajás, ces projets ont été présentés comme des impératifs centraux pour établir de nouvelles conditions d’intégration et même des améliorations pour la partie nord du pays. Ensemble, une nouvelle force s’est intensifiée à partir de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle en tant qu’élément et pilier central afin que toutes ces entreprises puissent être réalisées. La production d’énergie est ainsi devenue un objectif et synonyme d’exploration des potentialités de l’Amazonie, entrant de manière significative dans différents espaces et produisant de nouveaux récits sur cette région. Cet article propose de discuter des transformations qui se sont produites entre le processus de planification et la structuration inexistante de ces secteurs dans l’Amazonie orientale. Prenant comme argument les sociétés de production documentaire impliquées dans ce processus, telles que Eletronorte, Celpa et Eletrobrás, ainsi que l’observation de débats qui imprègnent les médias et les discours gouvernementaux, l’article cherche à apporter des éléments pour comprendre comment les chemins empruntés par ces projets, du présent au passé, sont saisis comme des éléments dynamiques d’une région, mais qui n’ont jamais consolidé une véritable exécution axée sur les intérêts et les besoins de cet espace.

Abstract: Depuis son apparition à la fin du XIXe siècle sous la forme industrielle, la nouvelle énergie électrique s’est immiscée dans les paysages métropolitains, industriels ou ruraux. Mais cette immixtion, sous le signe de l’étrangeté de l’appareillage, du bâtiment, des configurations spatiales et des postures professionnelles, s’est progressivement, et parfois radicalement, transformée en genèse d’un paysage électrique spécifique. Ce nouveau système paysager, qui concentrait tous les signes ambivalents de la modernité avant d’être aujourd’hui en certains cas patrimonialisé, a produit des figures extrêmement diverses. Cet ouvrage dépasse largement la question des externalités économiques et sociales négatives, question toujours au demeurant centrale. Il pose un jalon dans une histoire culturelle du dialogue entre l’électricité et le paysage. Il confirme que ce dialogue déjà multiséculaire ne se réduit pas à la mesure extrêmement volatile du gradient technophile/technophobe, tradition/modernité et bien entendu nature/culture. Il insiste, surtout, sur la complexité de la trame historique de ces paysages de l’électricité, où les physionomies territoriales se reconstruisent sans cesse en brassant le quotidien et le sublime, la fabrique de la nature et les superstitions de la culture.

Abstract: International audience; Li-O2 batteries offer a high theoretical discharge capacity due to the formation of light discharged species such as Li2O2 , which fill the porous positive electrode. However, in practice, it is challenging to reach the theoretical capacity and completely utilize the full electrode pore volume during discharge. With the formation of discharge products, the porous medium evolves, and the porosity and tortuosity factor of the positive electrode are altered through shrinkage and clogging of pores. A pore shrinks as solid discharge products accumulate, the pore clogging when it is filled (or when access is blocked). In this study, we investigate the structural evolution of the positive electrode through a combination of experimental and computational techniques. Pulsed field gradient nuclear magnetic resonance results show that the electrode tortuosity factor changes much faster than suggested by the Bruggeman relation (an equation that empirically links the tortuosity factor to the porosity) and that the electrolyte solvent affects the tortuosity factor evolution. The latter is ascribed to the different abilities of solvents to dissolve reaction intermediates, which leads to different discharge product particle sizes: on discharging using 0.5M LiTFSI in dimethoxyethane, the tortuosity factor increases much faster than for discharging in 0.5M LiTFSI in tetraglyme. The correlation between a discharge product size and tortuosity factor is studied using a pore network model, which shows that larger discharge products generate more pore clogging. The Knudsen diffusion effect, where collisions of diffusing molecules with pore walls reduce the effective diffusion coefficients, is investigated using a kinetic Monte Carlo model and is found to have an insignificant impact on the effective diffusion coefficient for molecules in pores with diameters above 5 nm, i.e., most of the pores present in the materials investigated here. As a consequence, pore clogging is thought to be the main origin of tortuosity factor evolution.

Abstract: International audience; The Hydrostatic Pressure Wheel is an innovative solution to regulate ﬂow discharges and waters heights in open channel networks. Indeed, they can maintain a water depth while producing energy for supplying sensors and a regulation system. To prove the feasibility of this solution, a complete model of water depth–discharge rotational speed relationship has been elaborated. The latter takes into account the different energy losses present in the turbine. Experimental measurements achieved in IMFT laboratory allowed to calibrate the coefﬁcients of head losses relevant for a large range of operating conditions. Once the model had been validated, an extrapolation to a real case showed the possibility of maintaining upstream water level but also of being able to produce sufﬁcient energy for supplying in energy isolated sites. The solution thus makes it possible to satisfy primary energy needs while respecting the principles of frugal innovation: simplicity, robustness, reduced environmental impact.

Abstract: International audience; Aqueous electrolytes are very effective for supercapacitor applications but their narrow electrochemical potential window (∼1 V) and associated limited energy currently limits their use. Here, we demonstrate a new strategy to enlarge the potential window by designing an artificial interface (ai). An effective ai was achieved via a mixture of siloxanes doped with an ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (EMI TFSI). Indeed, the as-deposited ai on the carbon-based electrode hinders the electron charge transfer but not the ionic charge transfer, making the ai ionic conductive. As a result, a cell voltage of about 1.8 V was obtained in aqueous electrolyte-EMI HSO4 1 mol l−1 in water. Used as a membrane, the ai was found to be ionically specific to EMI+; the proton transference number being close to zero. These results show the strategy of developing an ai at the electrode/electrolyte interface could represent a new path for aqueous-based carbon-carbon supercapacitors to reach higher cell voltages, providing both higher specific energy and power.

Abstract: Wide bandgap (WBG) power transistors such as SiC MOSFETs and GaN HEMTs are a real breakthrough in power electronics. These power semiconductor devices have lower conduction and switching losses than their Silicon competitors. However, the fast switching transients can be an issue in terms of Electromagnetic Interferences (EMI). Consequently, one must slow down the switching speeds of WBG transistors to comply with EMI limitations, which reduces their advantages in terms of higher switching frequencies and lower total losses. In this work, an active gate driver is proposed to control the switching speed of wide bandgap semiconductor power transistors. An innovative closed-loop control circuit makes it possible to adjust separately the dv/dt and di/dt during the switching sequences. Overall, the dv/dt values can be reduced to comply with system-level limits of EMI, with less switching losses than existing methods. The proposed method is thoroughly investigated, with analytic and numerical models to assess the key performances: feedback loop bandwidth, optimal circuit design, area consumption. Selected and optimal designs are implemented in two integrated circuits in CMOS technology which demonstrate delay times below the nanosecond. With such performances, it has been shown experimentally that it is possible to actively control switching speeds higher than 100 V/ns under voltages of 400 V.

Abstract: In the context of developing renewable energies, storing energy improves energy efficiency and promotes the insertion of intermittent renewable energies. It consists of accumulating energy for later use in a place that may be the same or different from the place of production. Converting electrical energy to high-pressure air seems a promising solution in the energy storage field: it is characterized by a high reliability, low environmental impact and a remarkable stored energy density (kWh/m3). Currently, many researchers are focusing on developing small scale of the compressed air energy storage system (CAES) coupled to a building applications based on the work done for multiple large scale CAES systems installed in the world. A global numerical model of trigeneration CAES system coupled to a building model and renewable energy modules was developed in order to analyze the CAES system behavior responding to electrical, hot and cold energy building demand. Different energy scenarios (autonomous and connected to the grid modes), geographical locations and building typologies were proposed and analyzed. The CAES numerical model development is based on solving energy and heat transfer equations for each system component (compressor/expander, heat exchanger, high pressure air reservoir, thermal water storage tank). Adiabatic compressor and expander were firstly selected to investigate the trigeneration advanced adiabatic compressed air energy system (AA-CAES) coupled to the building and to grids with the different scenarios described above. Similar to adiabatic components, quasi-isothermal compressor and expander developed by LightSail Energy and Enairys Powertech were also analyzed by solving the energy and heat transfer equations for each phase of the compression and expansion processes. These analytical models allowed us to have a better understanding of these technologies operations and to have several orders of magnitudes of different physical parameters. I-CAES and AA-CAES were also compared from a financial point of view based on compressed air market analysis. Three different prototypes were studied: Two AA-CAES systems (ideal and virtual (some of which are based on commercial units found in the compressed air market)) and one I-CAES system (based on LightSail Energy CAES prototype)., Le développement des énergies renouvelables pose la question du stockage de l’énergie électrique. L’utilisation du stockage par air comprimé semble une solution prometteuse dans le domaine du stockage d'énergie : elle se caractérise par une grande fiabilité, un faible impact environnemental et une remarquable densité énergétique stockée (kWh/m3). Jusqu’à présent, l'air comprimé a été utilisé dans de nombreux domaines comme vecteur d’énergie pour stocker différentes formes d'énergies (transport routier, poste pneumatique, plongée sous-marine). Néanmoins, actuellement de nombreux chercheurs se concentrent sur le développement de stockage d'énergie par air comprimé (CAES) à petite échelle couplé à une application de bâtiment en se basant sur les travaux développés pour les multiples systèmes de CAES à grande échelle installés dans le monde. Un modèle numérique global du système de stockage par air comprimé à petite échelle, couplé à un modèle de bâtiment et à des modules d’énergie renouvelable a été développé dans le but de modéliser différents compresseurs/détendeurs et structures d’installation développés par plusieurs startups (LightSail Energy et Enairys Powertech) et chercheurs. Les compresseurs et détendeurs adiabatiques ont d’abord été sélectionnés pour étudier le système de trigénération de stockage d'énergie par air comprimé adiabatique avancé (AA-CAES) couplé au bâtiment et aux réseaux avec les différents scénarios décrits ci-dessus. Les compresseurs et détendeurs quasi-isothermes développés par LightSail Energy et Enairys Powertech ont été modélisés pour chaque phase de la compression et de la détente. Ces modèles analytiques ont permis une meilleure compréhension du fonctionnement principal de ces technologies et d'avoir l’ordre de grandeur de différents paramètres physiques. Les systèmes I-CAES et AA-CAES sont comparés d'un point de vue financier en se référant à une analyse du marché des systèmes de production/utilisation de l'air comprimé. Trois prototypes différents ont été étudiés: deux systèmes AA-CAES (idéal et virtuel (basés sur des unités commerciales trouvées sur le marché de l'air comprimé)) et un système I-CAES (basé sur le prototype LightSail Energy CAES).

Abstract: Luminance is the main feature to follow an OLED degradation. Beside using photo-diodes, the luminance decay can be predicted with the help of the electrical characteristics of the OLED. Analysis of the impedance revealed a strong correlation between the luminance and the impedance time constant. As a result, the time constant is chosen as the main feature to track OLED degradation. The evolution of this latter is exponentially modelled through time at different stress levels using the design of experiments (DoE) methodology. Simultaneously, an exponential relation between the luminance and this time constant is selected, enabling the luminance degradation prediction through time. This method is an accurate novel solution for luminance tracking in particular and the OLED degradation in general with a total prediction error of 2%.

Abstract: International audience; The activation of anionic redox couple is recognized as one of the best way to increase the energy density of positive electrode materials in both Li and Na-ion batteries. However, for such hope, to materialize a better understanding of the parameters governing the activation, reversibility and efficiency of the anionic redox in NaMO2 layered compounds is still sorely needed. Herein, we report a new P2–Na0.63[□0.036Mg0.143Mn0.820]O2 compound that combines vacancies and Mg doping as well-known sources for anionic redox activation and benchmark its electrochemical performances against P2–Na0.72[Mg0.31Mn0.69]O2. We found that vacancies and Mg doping trigger independently anionic redox processes that differ in terms of redox voltage and reversibility. The one associated to vacancies occurs at the lowest potential and is irreversible. Moreover, we evidenced by monitoring the structural evolution of the pristine phase during cycling the benefice of anionic processes in ensuring the stabilization of P2-type structure at high voltage over a wide range in Na content. These findings highlight the importance of the anionic redox process origin (e.g. vacancies vs. highly electropositive cations) in governing the material electrochemical properties, while providing a new way to efficiently stabilize, without capacity loss, the P2-type structure through the charge process in non A-rich compounds.

Abstract: Face à l’évolution de notre compréhension des plasmas froids, leur spectre d’exploitation n’a cessé de croître durant ces dernières décennies. Même si dans le domaine biomédical, l'intérêt s'est aujourd'hui étendu à applications diverses telles que la thérapie cellulaire, le soin des plaies, la chirurgie dentaire ou le traitement cornéen, la désinfection par plasma froid reste un sujet d’étude prépondérant dans le domaine. De nombreux générateurs plasma ont été développés dans le but de répondre aux exigences de désinfection des outils thermosensibles ou chimiosensibles. De nombreuses difficultés telles qu'un niveau de désinfection élevé, une durée de traitement minimale, un rapport de forme ou une géométrie complexe des outils doivent être prises en compte. Leur caractéristique commune est la nécessité d'une source de haute tension en entrée. Elle se justifie par l’obligation d'atteindre la valeur de tension de claquage du gaz de plusieurs kVolts. Dans certaines applications, cette source de haute tension peut représenter un problème de sécurité pour les personnes (choc électrique) et les appareils électriques (interférences électromagnétiques).

Abstract: L’objet de ce travail est d’analyser les déterminants de la demande résidentielle d’énergie électrique au Bénin. L’étude a été réalisée sur 1089 ménages en utilisant les données de l’Enquête sur la Consommation d’Electricité au Bénin (ECEB) conduite en 2014 par l’Institut National de la Statistique et de l’Analyse Economique. Après avoir procédé à une analyse descriptive univariée et bivariée, une modélisation économétrique en données de panel a été mise en œuvre. Le modèle d’analyse de la demande conditionnelle de Dalen et Larsen (2012) utilisé à cet effet a révélé que le sexe du chef de ménage, la taille et le revenu du ménage ainsi que la possession d’appareils électroménagers tels que le ventilateur, le brasseur, le réfrigérateur et la radio influencent la demande résidentielle globale d’énergie électrique des départements contrairement au milieu de résidence (urbain ou rural) et au prix du kilowattheure d’électricité., Repères et Perspectives Economiques, Vol. 4, No 2 (2020)

Abstract: International audience; An overview of fast charging materials for high power applications is given. The behavior at high current density of several anodic and cathodic materials that have been utilized in lithium‐, sodium‐, and potassium‐ion batteries is considered. Furthermore, the behavior of capacitive and pseudocapacitive materials suitable for electrochemical capacitors and, also, of those that have been utilized for the realization of hybrid‐ion capacitors, which are nowadays an interesting reality in the field of high power devices, is discussed. The advantages and limitations of all these materials are critically analyzed with the aim of understanding their impact on real devices. On the basis of this analysis, the most important aspects are identified, which should be addressed in the future for the realization of advanced high power devices.

Abstract: International audience; Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is one of the most powerful experimental techniques to characterize the structure of molecules and confined liquids. Nevertheless, the complexity of the systems under investigation usually requires complementary computational studies to interpret the NMR results. In this work we focus on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), an important class of organic molecules which have been commonly used as simple analogues for the spectroscopic properties of more complex systems, such as porous disordered carbons. We use Density Functional Theory (DFT) to calculate 13C chemical shifts and Nucleus Independent Chemical Shifts (NICS) for 34 PAHs. The results show a clear molecular size dependence of the two quantities, as well as the convergence of the 13C NMR shifts towards the values observed for graphene. We then present two computationally cheap models for the prediction of NICS in simple PAHs. We show that while a simple dipolar model fails to produce accurate values, a perturbative tight-binding approach can be successfully applied for the prediction of NICS in this series of molecules, including some non-planar ones containing 5-and 7-membered rings. This model, one to two orders of magnitudes faster than DFT calculations, is very promising and can be further refined in order to study more complex systems.

Abstract: International audience; This paper proposes an analytical model for natural convection in a closed rectangular enclosure filled by a fluid, with imposed heat fluxes at the vertical walls and adiabatic horizontal walls. The analytical model offers a simplified, but easy to handle, description of the temperature and velocity fields. The predicted temperature, velocity, and pressure fields are shown to be in agreement with those obtained from a reliable numerical model. The Nusselt numbers for both the analytical and numerical solutions are then calculated and compared, varying both the aspect ratio of the enclosure and the Rayleigh number. Based on the comparisons, it is possible to assess the dependence of the reliability of the analytical model on the aspect ratio of the enclosure, showing that the prediction error rapidly decreases with the increase of the enclosure slenderness

Abstract: International audience; In the pursuit of facile, fast, and efficient methods for the synthesis of various compounds for a variety of applications, spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique is considered to be a powerful and simple tool. Using this technique, a popular cathode material for Na‐ion batteries—Na3V2(PO4)2F3—is synthesized and characterized with X‐ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and is electrochemically tested in Swagelok‐type cells in a galvanostatic mode. The obtained material is compared with the conventionally synthesized (via a solid‐state route) sample. SEM analysis shows 2 times smaller particles in the case of SPS‐synthesized material compared with the solid‐state‐synthesized material which is to be expected from the fast (40 min in total) SPS synthesis that practically excludes grain/particle growth and promotes much faster diffusion, thereby drastically enhancing the reaction kinetics. Electrochemical performance of the SPS‐obtained material shows an improvement in decreasing the overpotential and reducing the capacity loss at high C‐rates (8C).

Abstract: International audience; In many developing countries, the lack of electricity in rural areas is still a key issue for millions of people. The reuse of discarded components in renewable energy systems, based on the frugal innovation concept, has been identified as a solution for rural electrification in countries where renewable resource is plentiful. Specific emphasis is paid in this work to the application of reuse from an engineering viewpoint for a Renewable Energy System, including a “solar” element, composed of solar Photovoltaic (PV) panels and of modified Power Supply Units (PSUs), a “hydro” part and an energy storage system with used car batteries. The scientific objective of this work is to evaluate the environmental impact of this solution, considering only the solar element, as compared to a conventional system consisting of photovoltaic panels, lead-acid batteries, a charge controller and an inverter for small village consumption. For this purpose, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) has been selected as a methodological framework and both solutions have been described and sized. The results have shown that in the reuse scenario, the impact of PSUs, Uninterruptable Power Supply Units (UPSs) and a microcontroller kit remains very low (0.12% of total impact) while PV modules contribute significantly (66% of total impact). Nevertheless, the consequences of reusing lead-acid batteries are still significant due to the combination of several effects: their weight, reduced efficiency and the need for frequent replacement. A 40% reduction of the environmental burden obtained by the reuse solution is clearly due to the absence of battery production impacts in the case of reuse. A sensitivity analysis has been performed to determine the impact of parameters such as component efficiency, lifetime and transportation distance on environmental impacts. The efficiency of repurposed PSUs and UPSs is the most significant parameter on the environmental impact categories in the reuse solution.

Abstract: International audience; The urgent need for eﬃcient energy storage devices has stimulated a great deal of research on electrochemical double layer capacitors (EDLCs). This review aims at summarizing the recent progress in nanoporous carbons, as the most commonly used EDLC electrode materials in the field of capacitive energy storage, from the viewpoint of materials science and characterization techniques. We discuss the key advances in the fundamental understanding of the charge storage mechanism in nanoporous carbon-based electrodes, including the double layer formation in confined nanopores. Special attention will be also paid to the important development of advanced in situ analytical techniques as well as theoretical studies to better understand the carbon pore structure, electrolyte ion environment and ion fluxes in these confined pores. We also highlight the recent progress in advanced electrolytes for EDLCs. The better understanding of the charge storage mechanism of nanoporous carbon-based electrodes and the rational design of electrolytes should shed light on developing the next-generation of EDLCs.

Abstract: International audience; By gathering in Eco-Industrial Parks (EIPs), companies obtain benefits from synergistic cooperation but it also creates a risk by increasing interdependencies. The aim of this paper is to provide a method for optimally design exchanges that takes into consideration real stakes of companies. This resolution method is assessed on a multi-period MILP model of coupled energy networks integrating a utility system producing steam at different pressure levels and a mutualized on-grid Hybrid Power System (HPS) providing electricity using Renewable Energy (RE) sources. Design concerns interconnections between companies such as boilers, turbines and power of RE sources. A multi-stage approach is developped to minimize network complexity and Net Present Value (NPV) of the overall network. Lastly, an interdependency analysis is proposed to choose the optimal solution. Tested on a case study involving 15 companies, the optimal exchanges have been raised to satisfy demands over four time periods.

Abstract: International audience; Diffusion of interstitial carbon atoms in iron is the rate-limiting phenomenon of a number of phase transitions in body-centered (bcc) and body-centered tetragonal (bct) phases such as ferrite and martensite. These phases being rarely stress-free and undeformed, the influence of stress/strain on the diffusivity of carbon is essential, although scarcely documented. We developed a model of carbon elastodiffusion in bct-iron. We combined anisotropic linear elasticity theory of point defects, the dilute approximation of regular solutions and the multisite model of random walk into a coherent mean-field theory. The model allows predicting the effects of composition, temperature and mechanical loading on the anisotropy of carbon diffusion. Density functional theory calculations have provided most of the materials parameters. The predictions were successfully tested against kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. Our results show that compression of the crystal increases carbon diffusivity, while tension has the opposite effect. Axial straining is accompanied by a large anisotropy of diffusion. This effect could be exploited to produce stress-controlled diffusion channeling for the engineering of anisotropic microstructures during thermal ageing of martensitic Fe-C alloys.

Abstract: International audience; This work focuses on the comparison of Ln-Ni-O coatings (Ln = La, Nd, Pr) deposited by reactive magnetron sputtering using Plasma Emission Monitoring (PEM) which allows high deposition rate. Each layer is deposited by different steps. The optimal regulation setpoint for oxide rare-earth deposition is determined and then the current dissipated on the nickel target is adjusted to obtain the convenient Ln/Ni ratio and to achieve the K2NiF4 structure. After an appropriate annealing treatment, all coatings exhibit crystalline structures, which depend on the Ln/Ni ratio. Due to the instability of Pr2NiO4 structure at intermediate temperatures, the crystallization step of praseodymium nickelate is performed at higher temperature than the other materials. This further thermal treatment implies a more porous structure. Each coating exhibits interesting properties. Electrical and electrochemical characterizations performed on these deposits prove better properties of the praseodymium nickelate coating.

Abstract: International audience; This article presents a new configuration for multiphase induction-heating (IH) systems and their control schemes. Instead of using separate voltage inverters to supply the required current to the inductors in each phase, we specifically configured the inverters to reduce the number of power switches. A modification of the inverter-setting parameters ensured the proper operation of the system. We obtained the best references through a specific optimization procedure and tested several solutions for neutral current minimization, including a new arrangement of the coils. In addition, proportional-resonant (PR) controllers allowed us to achieve current control in the different phases. We developed the application on a reduced-power, three-phase coupled resonant test bench, which provided simulation and experimental results.

46. Modélisation de la demande en énergie électrique au Togo

Abstract: Quatre modèles paramétriques sont présentés dans ce travail, pour déterminer la consommation mensuelle de l’énergie électrique au Togo. Les données retenues pour cette modélisation portent sur la période 2001 - 2005 et sont constituées des relevés de consommation électrique, de température et d’humidité relative. Ces données ont été bootstrapées afin d’évaluer sur un jeu de données conséquent les paramètres des différents modèles. La démarche de modélisation a porté sur l’identification (reconstruction) et la simulation (prévision) de la consommée. Elle est concluante au regard des résultats obtenus par l’ensemble des modèles. Les modèles ARX se sont avérés les mieux indiqués pour l’identification, avec une erreur quadratique moyenne de 105 kWh, soit 1 % de la consommation minimale durant cette période. Pour ce qui est de la prévision, le modèle saisonnier a été le plus efficace, avec une erreur de 3.26 105 kWh.

Abstract: International audience; The electrohydrodynamic thrust generated by wire–cylinder electrodes under high dc voltage is experimentally analyzed. Some recent experimental studies have shown that electrohydrodynamic thrusters produced by corona discharge and ionic wind are able to deliver high thrust-to-power ratio, which reopens prospects for electrohydrodynamic propulsion. From simple considerations based on ultralight aircraft mass, aerodynamics, battery mass, and experimental electrohydrodynamic thrust densities, their potential for applications is showcased. Furthermore, an experimental study is performed, for which the experimental observations are presented in terms of electric field and thrust density. This allows a simplified and synthetic presentation of propulsive properties. Various experimental biases have been identified and corrected. The measure of time-periodic oscillations of the airflow in the back of the thruster pinpoints a possible wake effect due to the impact of ionic wind on electrodes. The variations of the associated drag are studied when varying the position of the collecting electrodes. It is shown that aerodynamic losses can be significant in experimental electrohydrodynamic thrusters.

Abstract: Acoustic resonance (AR) occurs in metal halide (MH) lamps and could cause light flicker, lamp arc bending and rotation, lamp extinction and arc tube explosion in the worst situations. This study takes place in the context of developing electronic ballasts with a low-cost and robust AR detection and avoidance mechanism. In this case, a lock-in amplifier is used to obtain the variations of lamp voltage envelope. A mathematical criterion is proposed to classify AR presence and severity. This criterion is based upon the short-term standard variation of voltage envelope and it was tested over a set of MH lamps with different powers and manufacturers. By varying the operation frequency of the high-frequency ballast, it was experimentally possible to control the average electrical power and the level of AR occurrence in the lamps. A data set consisting of healthy (without AR or AR-free) and faulty (with AR) cases was constructed by varying these parameters. The proposed criterion permitted to classify the observed waveforms in a two-dimensional (2D) plane. It was observed that AR-free and AR cases are separated. The results of this study show that the voltage envelope variations and the defined criterion are significantly correlated with AR presence whatever the lamp of the operation power.

Abstract: International audience; The search for Li ions conducting ceramics is burgeoning, owing to the regain interest for solid state batteries. Here we investigate the effect of Mg substitutions on the ionic conductivity of the A2SnO3 (A = Li, Na) phases. Pure A1.8Mg0.1SnO3 and A2.2Mg0.1Sn0.9O3 were structurally characterized and their ionic conductivity was measured by AC impedance spectroscopy. We show a decrease of the activation energy with increasing the Mg substitution and found ionic conductivities three and two orders of magnitude higher for Li2.2Mg0.1Sn0.9O3 and Na1.8Mg0.1SnO3 as compared to pristine Li2SnO3 and Na2SnO3, respectively. Neutron diffraction was used to determine the Mg localization in the crystal structure and to provide a rationale for the ionic conductivity changes. Our results confirm the high sensitivity of the ionic conductivity on chemical substitutions, even limited ones.
