The stellar activity of M dwarfs is the main limitation for discovering and characterizing exoplanets orbiting them since it induces quasi-periodic RV variations. We aim to characterize the magnetic field and stellar activity of the early, moderately active, M dwarf Gl205 in the optical and nIR domains. We obtained high-precision quasi-simultaneous spectra in the optical and nIR with the SOPHIE spectrograph and SPIRou spectropolarimeter between 2019 and 2022. We computed the RVs from both instruments and the SPIRou Stokes V profiles. We used ZDI to map the large-scale magnetic field over the time span of the observations. We studied the temporal behavior of optical and nIR RVs and activity indicators with the Lomb-Scargle periodogram and a quasi-periodic GP regression. In the nIR, we studied the equivalent width of Al I, Ti I, K I, Fe I, and He I. We modeled the activity-induced RV jitter using a multi-dimensional GP regression with activity indicators as ancillary time series. The optical and nIR RVs have similar scatter but nIR shows a more complex temporal evolution. We observe an evolution of the magnetic field topology from a poloidal dipolar field in 2019 to a dominantly toroidal field in 2022. We measured a stellar rotation period of Prot=34.4$\pm$0.5 d in the longitudinal magnetic field. Using ZDI we measure the amount of latitudinal differential rotation (DR) shearing the stellar surface yielding rotation periods of Peq=32.0$\pm$1.8 d at the stellar equator and Ppol=45.5$\pm$0.3 d at the poles. We observed inconsistencies in the activity indicators' periodicities that could be explained by these DR values. The multi-dimensional GP modeling yields an RMS of the RV residuals down to the noise level of 3 m/s for both instruments, using as ancillary time series H$\alpha$ and the BIS in the optical, and the FWHM in the nIR., Comment: 41 pages, 24 figures. We report the detection and characterization of the transiting sub-Neptune TOI-1759 b, using photometric time-series from TESS and near infrared spectropolarimetric data from SPIRou on the CFHT. TOI-1759 b orbits a moderately active M0V star with an orbital period of $18.849975\pm0.000006$ d, and we measure a planetary radius and mass of $3.06\pm0.22$ R$_\oplus$ and $6.8\pm2.0$ M$_\oplus$. Radial velocities were extracted from the SPIRou spectra using both the CCF and the LBL methods, optimizing the velocity measurements in the near infrared domain. We analyzed the broadband SED of the star and the high-resolution SPIRou spectra to constrain the stellar parameters and thus improve the accuracy of the derived planet parameters. A LSD analysis of the SPIRou Stokes $V$ polarized spectra detects Zeeman signatures in TOI-1759. We model the rotational modulation of the magnetic stellar activity using a GP regression with a quasi-periodic covariance function, and find a rotation period of $35.65^{+0.17}_{-0.15}$ d. We reconstruct the large-scale surface magnetic field of the star using ZDI, which gives a predominantly poloidal field with a mean strength of $18\pm4$ G. Finally, we perform a joint Bayesian MCMC analysis of the TESS photometry and SPIRou RVs to optimally constrain the system parameters. At $0.1176\pm0.0013$ au from the star, the planet receives $6.4$ times the bolometric flux incident on Earth, and its equilibrium temperature is estimated at $433\pm14$ K. TOI-1759 b is a likely gas-dominated sub-Neptune with an expected high rate of photoevaporation. Therefore, it is an interesting target to search for neutral hydrogen escape, which may provide important constraints on the planetary formation mechanisms responsible for the observed sub-Neptune radius desert., Accepted for publication in the 10. Since 1st light in 2002, HARPS has been setting the standard in the exo-planet detection by radial velocity (RV) measurements[1]. Based on this experience, our consortium is developing a high accuracy near-infrared RV spectrograph covering YJH bands to detect and characterize low-mass planets in the habitable zone of M dwarfs. It will allow RV measurements at the 1-m/s level and will look for habitable planets around M- type stars by following up the candidates found by the upcoming space missions TESS, CHEOPS and later PLATO. NIRPS and HARPS, working simultaneously on the ESO 3.6m are bound to become a single powerful high-resolution, high-fidelity spectrograph covering from 0.4 to 1.8 micron. NIRPS will complement HARPS in validating earth-like planets found around G and K-type stars whose signal is at the same order of magnitude than the stellar noise. Because at equal resolving power the overall dimensions of a spectrograph vary linearly with the input beam etendue, spectrograph designed for seeing-limited observations are large and expensive. NIRPS will use a high order adaptive optics system to couple the starlight into a fiber corresponding to 0.4” on the sky as efficiently or better than HARPS or ESPRESSO couple the light 0.9” fiber. This allows the spectrograph to be very compact, more thermally stable and less costly. Using a custom tan(θ)=4 dispersion grating in combination with a start-of-the-art Hawaii4RG detector makes NIRPS very efficient with complete coverage of the YJH bands at 110’000 resolution. NIRPS works in a regime that is in-between the usual multi-mode (MM) where 1000’s of modes propagates in the fiber and the single mode well suited for perfect optical systems. This regime called few-modes regime is prone to modal noise- Results from a significant R and D effort made to characterize and circumvent the modal noise show that this contribution to the performance budget shall not preclude the RV performance to be achieved.

Direct imaging is one of the most compelling methods for studying the properties and origins of extrasolar planets. The Near‐Infrared Coronagraphic Imager (NICI) is the new high‐contrast AO imager for the Gemini‐South 8.1‐meter telescope, tailored to direct detection of extrasolar planets through dual‐channel methane‐band coronagraphic imaging. Our team has been selected to carry out an extensive (500 hour) observing program beginning in Winter 2008 to detect and characterize extrasolar planets. We briefly describe the science goals, the Campaign design, NICI on‐sky performance, and a complementary preparatory search for young nearby low‐mass target stars. The Planet‐Finding Campaign is expected to be the largest and most sensitive imaging survey to date for massive (∼1 MJup) planets around other stars.

International audience; Context: L-type ultra-cool dwarfs and brown dwarfs have cloudy atmospheres that could host weather-like phenomena. The detection of photometric or spectral variability would provide insight into unresolved atmospheric heterogeneities, such as holes in a global cloud deck. Indeed, a number of ultra-cool dwarfs have been reported to vary. Additional time-resolved spectral observations of brown dwarfs offer the opportunity for further constraining and characterising atmospheric variability. Aims: It has been proposed that growth of heterogeneities in the global cloud deck may account for the L- to T-type transition when brown dwarf photospheres evolve from cloudy to clear conditions. Such a mechanism is compatible with variability. We searched for variability in the spectra of five L6 to T6 brown dwarfs to test this hypothesis. Methods: We obtained spectroscopic time series using the near-infrared spectrographs ISAAC on VLT-ANTU, over 0.99-1.13 μm, and SpeX on the Infrared Telescope Facility for two of our targets in the J, H, and K bands. We searched for statistically variable lines and for a correlation between those. Results: High spectral-frequency variations are seen in some objects, but these detections are marginal and need to be confirmed. We find no evidence of large-amplitude variations in spectral morphology and we place firm upper limits of 2 to 3% on broad-band variability, depending on the targets and wavelengths, on the time scale of a few hours. In contrast to the rest of the sample, the T2 transition brown dwarf SDSS J1254-0122 shows numerous variable features, but a secure variability diagnosis would require further observations. Conclusions: Assuming that any variability arises from the rotation of patterns of large-scale clear and cloudy regions across the surface, we find that the typical physical scale of cloud-cover disruption should be smaller than 5-8% of the disk area for four of our targets, using simplistic heterogeneous atmospheric models. The possible variations seen in SDSS J1254-0122 are not strong enough to allow us to confirm the cloud-breaking hypothesis.
