Aims: The influenza virus is an infectious disease with acute respiratory tract infections, caused secondary bacterial infections and death. In this study, we aimed to determine which predictors were associated with the need for high-flow nasal cannula oxygen therapy (HFNC) and transition to intensive care for influenza virus and also to compare single viral pathogens with multiple ones.Methods: Inpatients under the age of 5 with influenza virus-related respiratory tract infections between November 2015 and March 2019 were included in the study. Demographic features, comorbidities, symptoms, secondary bacterial infection, need for HFNC and pediatric intensive care unit and respiratory support system, length of hospital stay, polymerase chain reaction tests were recorded.Results: A total of 93 patients were included in the study. It was determined that 53.8% of the cases were male and 84.9% were under the age of 2. Comorbidities were present in 50.5% of the cases. Secondary bacterial pneumonia developed in 56.9% of the cases. Patients with secondary bacterial pneumonia had higher PICU need, HFNC need and hospital stay (p = 0.014, p ≤ 0.001 and p ≤ 0.001, respectively). Patients with comorbidity had longer hospital stays and a higher need for HFNC (p ≤ 0.001 and p = 0.001, respectively).Conclusions: In this study, it was determined that especially comorbidity and secondary bacterial infection aggravated the clinical treatment of hospitalized patients. Objective: Invasive infections caused by group A streptococci, including bacteremia, pneumonia, sepsis, necrotizing fasciitis, streptococcal toxic shock syndrome, and focal infections, are the significant causes of mortality and morbidity worldwide. This study aimed to assess the clinical and laboratory features and management of children with invasive group A streptococci infections. Materials and Methods: A descriptive observational study was conducted on children younger than 18 years with invasive group A streptococci infection in a single center between 2012 and 2019. The clinical and laboratory features, treatment options, and patient outcomes were evaluated retrospectively. Results: Forty-nine patients diagnosed with an invasive group A streptococci infection were analyzed. Among them, 28 (57.1%) were boys and 21 (42.9%) were girls, with a median age of 84 months (IQR: 48-150). Group A streptococci strains were found to be isolated mainly from the skin and soft tissue abscesses (60.7%). It was found that 21 (42.9%) of the cases were hospitalized, and the median duration of hospitalization was 7 (IQR: 5-11) days. It was noted that all of the cases were treated, and infection-related mortality was not observed in any patient. Conclusions: For correct management of invasive group A streptococci infections, timely diagnosis, appropriate duration of antimicrobial therapy, and surgical intervention in selected cases are required. An outbreak of pneumonia of unknown origin occurred in China in December 2019. The disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was named Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). COVID-19, which is seen less frequently in children than adults, is known to have milder symptoms. However, at the end of April 2020 in Europe, it was observed that some children with SARS-CoV-2 infections developed fever, abdominal pain, shock, myocardial insufficiency, and the need for intensive care. This new disease has been called Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C). Although the pathogenesis of MIS-C is unclear, it progresses with signs of multi-organ involvement as a result of uncontrolled inflammation of the immune system and even causes death. Therefore, the diagnosis and treatment of patients with MIS-C should be managed quickly. In this review, the pathophysiology, clinical and laboratory findings, diagnostic methods, and treatment regimens of MIS-C were discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Infections and sepsis are the leading causes of death in non-cardiac intensive care units (ICUs) and account for 40 percent of all ICU expenditures. Data regarding bloodstream infections (BSIs) due to a carbapenem-resistant gram negative (CRGN) microorganisms in pediatric ICUs still remain limited. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted retrospectively in patients who were admitted to two pediatric critical care units between January 2011 and December 2017. Patients were assigned to two groups. Patients with BSI caused by a CRGN microorganism and infections were assigned to the BSI group and those other than BSI were assigned to the non-BSI group. Results: This study included 89 critically ill children with a mean age of 52.1 (±65.1) months. The requirements for invasive procedures including tracheostomy, Foley catheter and central venous catheter were not statistically different among the groups, p values were 0.159, 0.291 and 0.803, respectively. The majority of the patients admitted to pediatric intensive care unit were due to sepsis/septic shock in the BSI group (n=18, 58%) and in the non-BSI group, this figure was 37.9% (n=24). Prior third/fourth generation cephalosporin exposure was significantly more common in the BSI group (51.6% vs 15.5%, p<0.001), carbapenem exposure was not significantly different among the groups (35.5% vs 56.9%, p=0.054). Neutropenia (<500/mm3) and thrombocytopenia (150x103/mm3) were significantly more common in the BSI group (p=0.011 and p=0.010) and the C-reactive protein level was significantly higher (p=0.018). Crude and attributable mortality did not show any significance between the groups, p values were 0.578 and 0.955, respectively. Conclusion: CRGN infections are still a major cause of morbidity, mortality and healthcare associated infections. In this study, we evaluated patients with BSI due to a CRGN microorganism and compared them with other infection types. The risk factors and outcomes were similar except for prior cephalosporin exposure. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of sleep in mothers of children with bronchiolitis obliterans. Material and Method: The study group consisted of 36 mothers with a child who had bronchiolitis obliterans and 62 mothers with healthy children. All mothers enrolled in the study filled in the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Results: The mean ages of the children of the mothers enrolled in the study were statistically similar (3.57±2.58 vs 3.85±1.46 years, p>0.05). Total Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores and subjective sleep quality scores in the mothers of children with bronchiolitis obliterans were significantly higher than those in the mothers of healthy children (both p=0.015). Conclusions: In this study, it was found that mothers of children with bronchiolitis obliterans have poor sleep quality. Mondini's dysplasia is a developmental anomaly of the middle ear characterized by cochlear malformation with dilation of the vestibular aquaduct, vestibule, and ampullar ends of the semicircular canals. These deformities may result in a connection between subarachnoid space and the middle ear resulting in recurrent episodes of meningitis. Additionally, it is commonly associated with hearing impairment. We describe here a boy with recurrent meningitis and unilateral sensorineural hearing loss. Mondini dysplasia was demonstrated with computed tomographic scans of the temporal bones in the search for pathogenesis of recurrent meningitis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
