Background/purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of an Effective Communication course with enhanced student engagement on preservice teachers' communication skills and empathic tendency levels. Materials/methods: The study adopted a mixed-methods design where the one-group pretest-posttest design was used. Results: It was found that the Effective Communication course with enhanced student engagement had a significant impact on the empathic tendency levels of preservice teachers, albeit with a small effect size. However, the impact of the course on communication skills was not statistically significant. The preservice teachers found the course efficient in contributing to their theoretical knowledge about communication and improving their attitudes and basic skills. Conclusion: It was concluded that enhancing student engagement through an Effective Communication course had a limited contribution in optimizing the communication skills and empathic tendency levels of future teachers.

This study investigates the extent to which school culture and teacher empowerment dimensions predict the effective school perceptions of secondary school teachers. The sample of the study includes 363 teachers [120 male (33.1%), 243 (66.9 %) female] from 24 secondary schools in four central districts (Mezitli, Yenisehir, Toroslar, Akdeniz) in Mersin. The data of the study was collected via the Personal Information Form, School Culture Inventory, the School Effectiveness Index, and the School Participant Empowerment Scale. The data was analysed through stepwise regression analysis statistical method. The alpha value of 0.01 was established as a level of significance. The results revealed that professional development which is a dimension of school culture is the most important predictive variable, and it was followed by collegial support, collegial leadership, unity of purpose, self-efficacy, decision making and teacher collaboration. Together, these seven significant predictors explained 59.1% of the variance in the teacher perception of school effectiveness. Moreover, learning partnership dimension of school culture and status, impact, autonomy and professional growth dimensions of school participant empowerment were not statistically significant in explaining the school effectiveness. According to the results of this study, school culture has stronger relations with school effectiveness than the teacher empowerment has. This may mean that a school should have a culture that values professional development of its teachers, collegiality, collaborative leadership and teamwork in order to be effective. Background: This cross-sectional study aimed to address the gap in understanding how night eating behavior impacts gastrointestinal health and psychological well-being in adult populations. Method: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 1372 adults aged 19–65 between September 2023 and November 2023. The research data were collected with the help of a web-based survey form (Google form) created by the researchers using the snowball sampling method. The demographic characteristics (sex, age, education level, marital status, income status), eating behaviors (number of main meals and snacks), and anthropometric measurements (body weight and height). Gastrointestinal symptoms observed in individuals were evaluated with the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale. The Night Eating Questionnaire (NEQ) was used to quantify the severity of night eating syndrome, and The Psychological Well-Being Scale was used to measure psychological well-being. All analyses were performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (version 27.0) software. Results: A statistically significant negative correlation was found between the Psychological Well-Being Scale total score and Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale subdimensions (r=-0.067, r=-0.067, r=-0.109, r=-0.068, r=-0.129, respectively). Also, a statistically significant negative correlation was found between the Psychological Well-Being Scale total score and the Night Eating Questionnaire total score (r=-0.287) (p < 0.05). Conclusion: This study found a relationship between night eating syndrome, psychological well-being, and gastrointestinal symptoms. Nutritional strategies for night eating syndrome, an eating disorder, may have important consequences on the psychological well-being of individuals with night eating. Our study highlights the significant relationships between night eating behavior, gastrointestinal symptoms, and psychological well-being, suggesting that night eating may contribute to both physical and mental health challenges. Plain English summary: This study explored how night eating behavior affects gastrointestinal health and psychological well-being in adults aged 19 to 65. Data were collected from 1372 participants through an online survey, which included information about their socio-demographic characteristics, night eating behavior, psychological well-being, and gastrointestinal symptoms. The findings revealed that night eating syndrome is linked to more gastrointestinal symptoms and lower psychological well-being. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between nutrition literacy, Mediterranean diet compliance, ecological footprint and sustainable environmental attitudes in adolescents. Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 673 adolescents aged 14–18 years. The individuals' general characteristics were questioned. Sustainable environmental attitudes, nutritional literacy status and compliance with the Mediterranean diet were assessed with the help of scales. An ecological footprint calculator was used for the calculation of the ecological footprint. Results: The mean age of the individuals was 16.5 ± 1.42 years. Adolescent Nutrition Literacy Scale score and Sustainable Environmental Attitude Scale score were higher in female adolescents than in males (p < 0.05). Ecological Footprint score was higher in male adolescents than in females (p < 0.05). A statistically significant positive correlation was found between Adolescent Nutrition Literacy Scale score, Sustainable Environmental Attitude Scale score and Mediterranean Diet Quality Index (KIDMED) score (p < 0.05). It was determined that sex and Sustainable Environmental Attitude Scale score affected the Ecological Footprint total score (p < 0.05). It was determined that sex, Adolescent Nutrition Literacy Scale score and Ecological Footprint total score affected the Sustainable Environmental Attitude Scale score (p < 0.05). Also, it was determined that Adolescent Nutrition Literacy Scale score affected the KIDMED score (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Girls have higher nutritional literacy and sustainable environmental attitude. Nutrition literacy, sustainable environmental attitude and KIDMED total scores showed a significant positive correlation with each other. Nutritional literacy is effective on sustainable environmental attitude and compliance with the Mediterranean diet. Objective To determine factors affecting obstetric outcomes in pregnancies after conization by loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) or cold-knife conization (CKC) due to cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. Material and Methods The maternal and clinical characteristics and obstetric outcomes of CKC, LEEP and control groups were evaluated and compared. Risk factors for adverse pregnancy outcomes were evaluated using multiple logistic regression analyses. Results The incidence of preterm delivery, preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM), low APGAR scores, fetal mortality, and late-period spontaneous abortus was highest in patients who underwent CKC (p<0.05). Cone depth of CKC was greater than LEEP (p=0.025). Cervical length (CL) at pregnancy was CKC < LEEP < controls (p=0.003). Shorter CL at pregnancy and time from conization to pregnancy (t-CP) was correlated with a high incidence of preterm delivery and PPROM (p<0.05). To predict preterm delivery, t-CP <14 months had 63.16% sensitivity and 77.42% specificity [area under the curve (AUC): 0.714, 95% confidence interval (CI): (0.603-0.809); p=0.005], and CL at pregnancy <31 mm had 65% sensitivity and 71.78% specificity [AUC: 0.731, 95% CI: (0.675-0.782); p<0.001]. To predict PPROM, t-CP <15 months had 85.71% sensitivity and 65.22% specificity [AUC: 0.730, 95% CI: (0.603-0.809); p=0.024], and CL <32 mm had 72.73% sensitivity and 61.89% spcificity [AUC: 0.685, 95% CI: (0.675-0.782); p=0.007]. Conclusion Compared with CKC, LEEP has shorter cone depth and fewer adverse pregnancy outcomes. The t-CP <14 months was a risk for preterm delivery and <15 months was a risk for PPROM. CL at pregnancy <31 mm was a risk for preterm delivery and <32 mm was a risk for PPROM. The bread wheat cultivar (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Sagittario) as a parental line and its mutant, drought-tolerant lines (Mutant lines 4 and 5) were subjected to polyethylene glycol (PEG)-induced drought. Drought stress resulted in decreased chlorophyll levels and the accumulation of proline and TBARS, despite increases in activities of catalase, peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase enzymes. Transcription of the genes encoding these enzymes and delta-1-pyrroline 5-carboxylase synthetase was induced by drought. 2-DE gel electrophoresis analysis identified differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) in the mutant lines, which are distinguished by "chloroplast", "mitochondrion", "pyruvate dehydrogenase complex", and "homeostatic process" terms. The drought tolerance of the mutant lines might be attributed to improved photosynthesis, efficient ATP synthesis, and modified antioxidant capacity. In addition to proteomics data, the drought tolerance of wheat genotypes might also be assessed by chlorophyll content and TaPOX gene expression. To our knowledge, this is the first proteomic analysis of gamma-induced mutants of bread wheat. These findings are expected to be utilized in plant breeding studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The relationship between the pregnancy modified DIC score, which is applied in obstetric conditions where the risk of disseminated intravascular coagulation is high, and underlying disease, as well as its effect on the prognosis, was investigated. Methods: Those with a DIC score ≥ 26 from obstetric conditions, such as obstetric bleeding, placental abruption, or preeclampsia/HELLP syndrome, which are at high risk of developing DIC, were included in the study. These patients were compared in terms of laboratory results, maternal morbidity/mortality, and neonatal outcomes, according to the underlying disease. Results: The DIC score was ≥ 26 in 224 of 154,233 deliveries in our center, and the incidence was 0.14%. In the preeclampsia/HELLP syndrome group, the platelet count and prothrombin time were lower, and the fibrinogen level was higher than those of the obstetric hemorrhage and placental abruption groups. In addition, the rates of blood transfusion and hysterectomy were lower in women who developed DIC due to pre-eclampsia/HELLP syndrome than in those with obstetric hemorrhage. Conclusions: Considering the underlying disease is an important factor in predicting prognosis, when using the new pregnancy modified diagnostic scores for DIC diagnosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to determine the relationship between health literacy and ecological footprint which is an indicator of sustainability and environmental impact and to examine the factors that may affect them. It was found that 20.3% of individuals have inadequate, 43.7% problematic, 26.1% sufficient and 10.0% excellent health literacy levels. There were differences in age, education level and BMI classification according to Ecological Footprint Awareness Scale score quartiles and health literacy levels (p < 0.05). It was determined that age and Turkey Health Literacy Scale score had effect on ecological footprint awareness. Individuals with a high level of health literacy have a high awareness of their ecological footprint. The increase in people's health literacy levels and ecological footprint awareness with age can be interpreted as the increase in people's education and knowledge levels and their awareness levels against the protection of nature and the environment. Soybean is an important industrial oilseed plant. As a relatively fast, flexible, cheap, and viable method, mutation breeding, which induces significant random genetic variations, is a widely used method in crop science. In the present study, we investigated physiological parameters, genetic variability, yield, and quality properties of salinitytolerant mutant plants derived from Ataem-7 and S04-05 soybean varieties by Cs-137 gamma radiation-induced mutations. The SM4 and SM3 mutants exhibited a greater genetic distance than all other salinity tolerant mutants did. SM3 mutant presented 16.8% lower lipid peroxidation under salinity stress. The most significant photosynthetic pigment increase was detected for chlorophyll b in SM4 and SM3 mutants, with values of 1.88 and 2.07-fold, respectively. The SM3 mutant exhibited the highest yield, at 437.6 kg/ha in the M3 generation, while AM1 presented the highest yield in the M4 generation. The AM1 mutant also had the highest pod count by 122.2 per plant. In the AM1 mutant, the photosynthetic pigment increase was 16.69% for chlorophyll a, 37.9% for chlorophyll b and 22.9% for total chlorophyll. These results provide a basis for future investigations in soybean mutation breeding studies for salinity stress tolerance, and also indicate the effectiveness of mutation breeding methods in agricultural breeding programs.
