1. A Grating Based High-Frequency Motion Stimulus Paradigm for Steady-State Motion Visual Evoked Potentials

Abstract

Objective: This paper proposes a novel type of stimulus in the shape of sinusoidal gratings displayed with an imperceptibly high-frequency motion. The stimulus has been designed for use in BCI (Brain Computer Interface) applications that employ visually evoked potentials (VEPs) in an effort to mitigate discomfort associated with VEPs. The stimuli set included traditional VEP stimuli, already established in the literature, allowing comparative analyses. We conducted analyses of signal distinction measures by calculating the signal-to-noise ratio and the classification performance of its evoked potentials. Methods: Fourteen participants were seated in a dimly lit room facing a display. Participants' fixation on the central stimulus was controlled by means of a desktop eye tracker. Participants attended a flicker-based steady-state VEP (SSVEP) task, a motion-based steady-state-motion VEP (SSMVEP) task, and the novel stimulus task (the imperceptible grating SSMVEP). Participants were asked to complete behavioral fatigue scale tasks. Results: A significant effect of stimulus type was observed, accompanied by insignificant differences in prediction accuracy. Partially significant task effects were obtained in fatigue scale tasks. Conclusion: The study revealed that the imperceptible grating SSMVEP stimulus successfully evoked SSMVEP responses within acceptable margins in the related cortical regions. This novel stimulus contributes to BCI research by providing an imperceptible interface, improving already established stimuli design in the SSVEP and the SSMVEP literature. Significance: The present paper provides a novel SSMVEP stimulus type that may inform the future design of effective VEP-based BCI paradigms that allow seamless interaction with computer interfaces.

3. We Game on Skyscrapers: The Effects of an Equity-Informed Game Design Workshop on Students' Computational Thinking Skills and Perceptions of Computer Science

Abstract

This paper presents a game-design workshop built around a digital art installation featuring video games displayed over a real-world skyscraper to stimulate students' interest in computer science and a study testing its short-term effects on improving middle school students' computational thinking (CT) skills and attitudes towards computing. Following a STEAM approach, the workshop aimed to engage participants in age-appropriate activities that focus on CT skills through the lens of creating their own game. A web-based game design interface that allows students to code and play games as simulated on a skyscraper was developed to support the workshop's core activities. The web environment also featured step-by-step tutorials and fully functional games to promote the accessibility of the learning materials for a diverse body of students and educators around the globe. The results of the study indicated that the workshop helped students improve their CT skills and differentially influence their attitudes towards computing. In particular, the workshop experience led students from underserved community districts to lower their attitude ratings, whereas the reverse pattern was observed for students from more affluent districts. The workshop reportedly informed students' perception of computing as a profession and their appreciation of the analytical effort required for developing functional games. Qualitative analysis of artifact-based interviews indicated that students could begin to make abstractions and devise algorithms by associating variables through conditional statements while solving problems related to game development. Interview analysis also revealed that students took pride in the effort that they made during the workshop.

7. Enhancing Mathematical Communication for Virtual Math Teams

Abstract

The Math Forum is an online resource center for pre-algebra, algebra, geometry and pre-calculus. Its Virtual Math Teams (VMT) service provides an integrated web-based environment for small teams of people to discuss math and to work collaboratively on math problems or explore interesting mathematical micro-worlds together. The VMT Project studies the online math discourse that takes place during sessions of virtual math teams working on open-ended problem-solving tasks. In particular, it investigates methods of group cognition that are employed by teams in this setting. The VMT environment currently integrates social networking, synchronous text chat, a shared whiteboard for drawing, web browsers and an asynchronous wiki for exchanging findings within the larger community. A simple version of MathML is supported in the whiteboard, chat and wiki for displaying mathematical expressions. The VMT Project is currently integrating the dynamic mathematics application, GeoGebra, into its collaboration environment. This will create a multi-user version of GeoGebra, which can be used in concert with the chat, web browsers, curricular topics and wiki repository.

21. Investigation of Response Dynamics in the Simon Task with Mouse Tracking Methodology.

Abstract

Introduction: Despite their popularity in Neuropsychology, reaction time analysis based on the subtraction and additive factors methods is critiqued for not paying adequate attention to the dynamical nature of cognition. Mouse-tracking methods aim to cater to this need by allowing researchers to explore response dynamics during cognitive tasks by recording mouse trajectories. Methods: A mouse-tracking adaptation of the Simon task is developed to explore decision-making dynamics in different stimulus-response compatibility conditions. The study focuses on the effects of stimulus design decisions on mouse trajectories, including relocation of the choice buttons from the top corners to the bottom and the mid-session reversal of stimulus-response mapping on mouse responses. Results: Consistent with previous studies, significant stimulus-response compatibility effects were observed, where contrasts over mouse-tracking measures had larger effect sizes than simple reaction time contrasts. Moreover, in the conflict trials, asymmetric response trajectories towards the left and right corners were observed. Moving the response buttons from top to bottom increased the degree of asymmetry between the mouse trajectories towards the bottom-left and bottom-right corners during the conflict condition. Finally, in the reverse Simon task, the switch to a new color-response mapping inflicted the largest effect on the average number of y-flips. Conclusion: Mouse tracking provides measures suitable for exploring decision-making dynamics beyond classical reaction time analysis, provided asymmetries due to the starting position and response layout are considered during experiment design. Abstract

Bu çalışmada, bilgisayar destekli iş birlikli iş süreçleri modelleme cBPM etkinliklerinin çevrimiçi olarak desteklenmesi sürecinde kısıtlamalar ve kolaylıkları ortaya koymak amacıyla farklı Bilgisayar Destekli İşbirliği Çalışma CSCW ortamlarının karşılaştırmalı bir değerlendirmesi yapılmıştır. Bu amaçla, etkileşim tasarım özellikleri açısından farklılık gösteren iki CSCW sistemi ile ortak çalışmayı destekleyen iki durum çalışması yürütülmüştür. Katılımcıların dikkatlerini cBPM görevleri sırasında paylaşılan çalışma alanına nasıl odakladıklarını gözlemlemek için ikili göz izleme yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Katılımcılar tarafından sohbet mesajları ile gönderilen iletişimsel içerik ve paylaşılan çalışma alanındaki aktiviteler üzerinde koordinasyon, iletişim, farkındalık, grup olarak karar verebilme ve takım oluşturma boyutları ışığında bir etkileşim analizi gerçekleştirilmiştir. Etkileşim analizi, sistem tasarımlarının katılımcıların performansını ve etkileşim kalitesini cBPM boyunca önemli ölçüde etkilediğini göstermiştir. Ayrıca, farklı etkileşim tasarım metodolojilerinin İş Süreçleri Modelleme BP Modelleme aşamaları olan ortaya çıkarma, biçimlendirme, geçerleme ve doğrulama üzerine etkilerini belirlemek için bir içerik analizi gerçekleştirilmiştir. Sistemlerin etkileşim tasarım özelliklerinin, BP Modelleme aşamalarının organizasyonunu önemli ölçüde etkilediği bulunmuştur. Bulgulara dayanarak, cBPM uygulamalarında işbirliği etkinliğini artırmak için bazı tasarım önerileri yapılmıştır. Çalışma sonuçlarının, sistem tasarımcılarının etkin bir eş zamanlı cBPM aracı tasarlamaları ve son kullanıcıların eş zamanlı cBPM uygulamaları için sistem seçimlerinde bir kılavuz görevi görmesi beklenmektedir., In this study, a comparative evaluation of different Computer-Supported Collaborative Work CSCW environments was conducted to reveal their constraints and affordances for supporting synchronous collaborative business process modeling cBPM activities online. For this purpose, two case studies were carried out with two CSCW systems that differ in terms of their interaction design features for supporting joint work. The dual-eye tracking method was employed to monitor how the participants focused their attention on the shared workspace during cBPM tasks. An interaction analysis was performed on the communicational content exchanged by the participants in chat messages and activities performed on the shared working area in light of the coordination, communication, awareness, group decision-making and team-building aspects of collaboration. The interaction analysis suggested that the design of the systems significantly affected the participants’ performance and the interaction quality throughout cBPM. In addition, a content analysis was conducted to determine the effects of different interaction design methodologies on the formation of the Business Process Modeling BP Modeling phases namely elicitation, formalization, validation and verification. The interaction design features of the systems were found to significantly affect the organization of the BP Modeling phases. Based on the findings, some design suggestions were made to enhance the efficiency of collaboration in cBPM practices. It is expected that the results of the study will serve as a guideline for system designers in designing an effective synchronous cBPM tool, and for end users in choosing a system for their synchronous cBPM practices.
