Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)–cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) relay strip intercropping involves cultivating wheat sown in autumn and cotton sown in spring, allowing the two crops to grow together for ∼2 months. Despite its prevalence in cotton‐growing regions globally, this agricultural practice remains untapped in Turkey, where the emphasis on resource use efficiency and the competition between staple and cash crops are paramount. To address this, we conducted a study comparing three cropping systems under both well‐watered and limited water conditions: sole wheat with a row spacing of 13.5 cm, sole cotton with a row spacing of 70 cm, and an intercropping system consisting of four rows of wheat and two rows of cotton, with row spacings of 13.5 cm and 40.5 cm, respectively. In intercropped wheat and cotton, the relative wheat yield was 0.68, while the relative cotton yield was 0.73, resulting in a combined relative yield of 1.41 when compared to monoculture. The land equivalent ratio (1.44) and area time equivalent ratio (1.08) consistently exceeded 1.0, particularly under limited watering conditions and concurrent heat stress observed in the second year of the experiment. Our findings indicate that wheat–cotton relay intercropping holds significant potential as a highly effective approach to enhance the production of both cotton and wheat in Turkey, particularly in stressful conditions such as limited water availability. Core Ideas: The productivity of wheat/cotton intercropping under both well‐watered and drought conditions in Turkey was studied. On average, intercropped wheat and cotton exhibited relative yields of 64% and 75%, respectively. The land equivalent ratio and water equivalent ratio were well above 1, with averages of 1.5 and 1.4, respectively. The advantage of intercropping was slightly increased under conditions of water shortage.Intercropped cotton demonstrated greater resilience to heat stress. The quality of cotton fiber plays a pivotal role for both producers and processors, influencing the market value and end-product quality. Certain cotton fiber properties, such as length, strength, micronaire, and uniformity index, are crucial determinants of cotton quality. Despite its prominence as a cotton-producing region, the Aegean region in Türkiye lacks comprehensive studies examining the quality of its cotton fiber across different subregions and seasonal variations. This study aimed to address this gap by investigating the variations in cotton fiber quality across different years and subregions within the Aegean. This study involved the evaluation of a total of 368,686 individual fiber quality analyses conducted over seven years across three subregions within the Aegean in Türkiye. The fiber samples collected from Bergama, Söke, and Menemen underwent high-volume instrument (HVI) analysis to evaluate the variations in cotton fiber quality across years and subregions, considering the phenological stages of cotton and climate conditions. The findings highlighted significant variations in the fiber quality traits among subregions, with environmental factors such as temperature and humidity playing crucial roles. Higher average daily temperatures during the flowering stage to boll formation contributed to higher strength values, while limitations on fiber length were observed due to prevalent high temperatures. Additionally, variations in micronaire values were linked to temperature and humidity conditions during boll development stages. This study underscores the importance of comprehensively considering climatic factors to understand their impacts on cotton fiber quality and suggests further research into the cotton plant's phenology and specific climate conditions for a more thorough understanding of environmental effects on fiber quality. This study was conducted in 2017/18 and 2019/20 growing seasons in experimental area belong to Menemen Research, Application and Production Farm of Ege University, Faculty of Agriculture. The research was combined in three main sections. In the first section of the research, productivity and quality features of different wheat and cotton sowing systems (Tek-B: sole wheat, Tek-P: sole cotton and Int-BP: relay strip intercropping of wheat and cotton) were assesed under limited water conditions. In the second section, effect of different sowing directions (K-G: north-south and D-B: east-west) to wheat and cotton in Int-BP were evaluated. Finally, performance of organic cotton (Org-P) against to Tek-P were studied for sustainable cotton cultivation. The results showed that land use productivity of Int-BP is higher than those Tek-B and Tek-P. Furthermore, it was found that water use efficiency of Int-BP better than Tek-P. The sowing directions altered to physiological and morphological features of cotton seedling and affected to growth and development of cotton plant as well. Additionally, yield of alternative Org-P found to be lower than Tek-P which is conventional method. As a result of this study, Int-BP system was found to be featured method in terms of effective land use. It was concluded that Int-BP has a potential due to better water use efficiency against to Tek-P in water limited lands. Additionally, it was thought that especially in warmer seasons, K-G sowing direction had a better cotton performance in Int-BP systems.

Mevcut çalışma, Akdeniz iklim özelliği gösteren Bornova koşullarında, Ege Üniversitesi Tarla Bitkileri Bölümü Deneme alanlarında, 2014/2015 pamuk yetiştirme sezonunda tam ve kısıtlı olmak üzere iki farklı sulama uygulaması ve vejetasyon süreleri birbirine yakın 10 farklı pamuk çeşidi ile yürütülmüştür. Denemede gerçekleştirilen sulama uygulamalarının; bitki boyu, toplam kuru ağırlık (TKA), kütlü verimi, lif verimi, bitkide koza sayısı, çırçır randımanı, SPAD değeri, kanopi sıcaklık depresyonu (KSD), prolin akümülasyonu, transpirasyona dayalı su kullanım etkinliği (SKETr) ve agronomik su kullanım etkinliğinde (SKEAgr) meydana getirdiği değişimler değerlendirilmiştir. Kısıtlı sulama uygulaması, tüm verim parametrelerinde bir düşüşe neden olurken, MAY P 06 çeşidi toplam kuru ağırlık, ikinci el lif verimi, çırçır randımanı açısından öne çıkmıştır. Bunun yanında, tarla koşullarında mikro-lisimetre yöntemi ile evaporasyon miktarları hesaplanmış ve bu yöntemin tarla koşullarında pratiğe aktarılması sağlanmıştır., This study was conducted with two irrigation treatments (well irrigated and deficit irrigated) and 10 different cotton cultivars which have similar vegetation durations in experimental cite of Ege University at 2014/2015 growing periods. Two irrigation treatments were performed and differences in plant height, total dry weight, seed cotton yields, lint yields, boll number per plant, lint percentage, SPAD values, canopy temperature depression (CTD), proline accumulation, transpiration based water use efficiency (WUETr) and agronomic water use efficiency (WUEAgr) were evaluated. Deficit irrigation treatment caused a reduction on all yield parameters and MAY P 06 was featured cultivar in terms of total dry weight, second picking lint yield, lint percentage and SPAD values. With performing deficit irrigation, SPAD values and proline accumulation were increased, but KSD values were decreased. Among the cultivars, there were no significant differences in WUETr due to alteration of transpirations were similar to total dry weight in comparison to WUEAgr. Cv. FLASH had maximum agronomic water use efficiency (WUEAgr) and it can be useable in breeding programs. In addition, micro-lysimeter method has been well established in field conditions and evaporation in a single plot was successfully estimated.
