An easy and low-cost way to fabricate monometallic Au nanoislands for plasmonic enhanced spectroscopy is presented. The method is based on direct thermal evaporation of Au on glass substrates to form nanoislands, with thicknesses between 2 and 15 nm, which are subsequently covered by a thin layer of silicon dioxide. We have used HR-SEM and AFM to characterize the nanoislands, and their optical transmission reveals strong plasmon resonances in the visible. The plasmonic performance of the fabricated substrates has been tested in fluorescence and Raman scattering measurements of two probe materials. Enhancement factors up to 1.8 and 9×104 are reported for confocal fluorescence and Raman microscopies, respectively, which are comparable to others obtained by more elaborated fabrication procedures.

Magnetic films of Permalloy (Ni81Fe19) with controlled defects (holes), usually called antidots arrays were synthesized by thin film deposition through sputtering and using focused ion beam (FIB) milling [1, 2]. Antidots arrays of circular holes of 80 nm were synthesized in a squared array with lattice constant of 320 nm. The Antidot shapes were controlled by increasing one direction in the circular hole, obtaining an anti-stadium shape, with short axis of 80 nm and long axis of 160 and 200 nm. This shape induces a magnetic anisotropy in the permalloy films of thicknesses of 20 and 10 nm. Magnetic characterizations were also carried out by magneto optic Kerr effect (MOKE) and magnetic force microscopy (MFM). MOKE hysteresis loops show the distribution of the magnetic anisotropy for the antidots arrays. The presence of the ordered non-magnetic holes induces a demagnetization field distribution that changes the magnetization switching mechanism. Besides, plateaus are observed in the hysteresis loops, which are related with the magnetic configuration and the density of magnetic domains in the arrays. Direct observation of the magnetic configuration was imaging at different applied field with MFM analysis in presence of a well-defined applied field using a VFM4® from Oxford instrument. Finally, Micromagnetic simulations were also carried by using Mumax3 ® to better describe the magnetic behavior

The high chemical stability of SU-8 makes it irreplaceable for a wide range of applications, most notably as a lithography photoresist for micro and nanotechnology. This advantage becomes a problem when there is a need to remove SU-8 from the fabricated devices. Researchers have been struggling for two decades with this problem, and although a number of partial solutions have been found, this difficulty has limited the applications of SU-8. Here we demonstrate a fast, reproducible, and comparatively gentle method to chemically remove SU-8 photoresist. An ether cleavage mechanism for the observed reaction is proposed, and the hypothesis is tested with ab initio quantum chemical calculations. We also describe a complementary removal method based on atomic hydrogen inductively coupled plasma.

We study the electromagnetic interactions and the magnetic modulation of the optical response of resonant spintronic-plasmonic structures coupled to a dielectric. The resonant nature of the spintronic system is provided by arrays of slits whose localized plasmon resonance interacts with the phonon band of the dielectric located in the mid infrared spectral range. This interaction can be tuned by changing the length of the slits and the thickness of the dielectric. In addition, the electromagnetic interaction also endorses with magnetic modulation capabilities to the phonon band, originating from a non-ferromagnetic material.

Two different nanostructures are studied in this contribution: large-area nanopillar arrays fabricated by glancing angle deposition with magnetron sputtering (MS-GLAD) and magnetic thin films perforated with long-range order arrays of nanoholes prepared by focused ion beam (patterned antidots). MS-GLAD is an easy and versatile route to fabricate arrays of nanostructures in large areas in a single processing step. In our work, nanostructured films with vertical or tilted nanopillars composed by polycrystalline Fe and Fe2O3 have been fabricated depending on whether the substrate is kept rotating azimuthally during deposition or not, respectively [1]. The magnetic properties of these films can be tuned with the specific morphology. In particular, the growth performed through a collimator mask mounted onto a not rotating azimuthally substrate produces almost isolated well-defined tilted nanopillars that exhibit a magnetic hardening. The first-order reversal curves diagrams and micromagnetic simulations revealed that a growth-induced uniaxial anisotropy, associated with an anisotropic surface morphology produced by the GLAD in the direction perpendicular to the atomic flux, plays an important role in the observed magnetic signatures. Magnetic antidots are being studied for different applications, such as magnonic crystals for microwave devices, magnetically-active plasmonic media, magnetic biosensing, and magneto-resistance sensors. In our work, a top-down approach using focused ion beam has been employed to fabricate Co/Permalloy hard-soft bilayer antidot arrays [2]. The antidots have a 40 nm diameter and two symmetries are studied: square and hexagonal. A dependence of magnetic coercivity on the relative thicknesses of the magnetically hard (Co) and soft (Permalloy) layers is found; increasing Permalloy thickness results in lower magnetic coercivity. Furthermore, the long-range periodicity of these antidots results in higher magnetic coercivity and a stronger magnetic

Gold nanotriangles (AuNTs) functionalized with dithiolated oligonucleotides have been employed to develop an amplification-free electrochemical biosensor for SARS-CoV-2 in patient samples. Gold nanotriangles, prepared through a seed-mediated growth method and exhaustively characterized by different techniques, serve as an improved electrochemical platform and for DNA probe immobilization. Azure A is used as an electrochemical indicator of the hybridization event. The biosensor detects either single stranded DNA or RNA sequences of SARS-CoV-2 of different lengths, with a low detection limit of 22.2 fM. In addition, it allows to detect point mutations in SARS-CoV-2 genome with the aim to detect more infective SARS-CoV-2 variants such as Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and Omicron. Results obtained with the biosensor in nasopharyngeal swab samples from COVID-19 patients show the possibility to clearly discriminate between non-infected and infected patient samples as well as patient samples with different viral load. Furthermore, the results correlate well with those obtained by the gold standard technique RT-qPCR, with the advantage of avoiding the amplification process and the need of sophisticated equipment.

A new design of carbon source using a S-shaped glassy carbon filament for p-doping and carbon deposition is presented. Due to the higher resistivity of the glassy carbon, lower current is needed to produce the same flux as in a source based on pyrolytic graphite filament. The source design is very compact and the use of water cooling is not mandatory. The results and simulations of the new design show a higher flux than the previously reported glassy carbon based source while avoiding hot spots that can cause an early filament degradation. Hole mobility vs doping level relation data on p-doped GaAs layers grown by molecular beam epitaxy using this new carbon source are shown. With this new C source GaAs (001) surface morphology flatness is preserved after depositing C, showing a reduced substrate heating radiation essential for operate in III-V solid source molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) systems.

Complementary metasurfaces composed of randomly-placed arrays of aligned rods or slits are fabricated out of giant magnetoresistance Ni81Fe19/Au multilayers (MLs), a material whose optical properties change under the application of an external static magnetic field. The two metasurfaces are studied from both the experimental and theoretical viewpoints. The induced magnetic modulation (MM) of both the far-field signal and the resonant near field, at the rod/slit localized surface plasmon frequency, are found to obey the Babinet’s principle. Furthermore, the near-field MM is found to be higher than the far-field counterpart. At resonance, both arrays show spots with high values of the magnetic modulated intensity of the electric near field (MM hot-spots). We show that this high magnetic modulation of the near-field intensity is very promising for the future development of high sensitivity molecular sensing platforms in the Mid- and Far-IR, using Magnetic-Modulation of Surface-Enhanced Infrared Absorption (MM-SEIRA) spectroscopy

A top-down approach using focused ion beam has been employed to fabricate Co/Permalloy hard-soft bilayer magnetic antidot arrays. These nanopatterned films are studied with particular emphasis on magnetic coercivity. The antidots have a diameter of 40 nm and the studied antidot symmetries are square and hexagonal. A dependence of magnetic coercivity on the relative thicknesses of the magnetically hard (Co) and soft (Permalloy) layers is found; increasing Permalloy thickness results in lower magnetic coercivity. Furthermore, the long-range periodicity of top-down nanopatterned antidots results in higher magnetic coercivity and a stronger magnetic domain-wall pinning, compared to identical hard/soft bilayers of short-range order deposited on porous anodic alumina. The combination of antidot symmetry and hard/soft thickness, allow for efficient tailoring of the magnetic properties of nanopatterned thin films. Finally, magnetic force microscopy imaging of the antidot array magnetic configuration shows striking qualitative differences between the two array symmetries: square symmetry arrays have inhomogeneous magnetic state and a high density of immobile super-domain walls, whereas hexagonal symmetry arrays show a homogeneous magnetic configuration.

Magnetic characterizations were carried out by magneto optic Kerr effect, showing the enhancement of the coercivity for the antidots arrays. The presence of the ordered non-magnetic holes induces a demagnetization field distribution that change the magnetization switching mechanism, and thermal reduction from Fe2O3 to Fe3O4 produces vacancies (porosity) in the material. Magnetic behavior was studied by mean of micromagnetic simulations, in where was possible to simulate the vacancies in the continuous film and the controlled defects. This technique opens a new route of manufacture ordered antidots arrays of magnetic oxides with variable lattice parameters.

In this work, we experimentally demonstrate magnetic modulation of mid-infrared (mid-IR) plasmon resonances in microantenna and hole-array metamaterial platforms made of Ni81Fe19/Au multilayers. The responsible mechanism is the magnetorefractive effect linked to the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) present in this system. Ni81Fe19/Au multilayers experience a modification in the electrical resistivity upon the application of a small magnetic field. This directly translates into a change in the optical constants of the multilayer, making it possible to magnetically modulate the plasmon resonances. Because GMR acts on conduction electrons, the optical modulation occurs in the low energy, mid-IR range, even being possible to extend it to the THz range. Electrodynamical calculations confirm the experimental observations. This approach improves by up to 2 orders of magnitude previous attempts for mid-IR magnetic modulation, is potentially ultrafast due to the characteristic spintronics dynamics, and establishes a roadmap for spintronically controlled devices in the whole mid-IR to THz band.

Nano-structuring the surfaces of solar cells presents the opportunity to engineer the optical response with more degrees of freedom than using only flat layers. Particularly, it allows to exploit diffraction effects not present in conventional antireflective coatings (ARCs) based on destructive interference [1] and gradual index matching [2]. Diffraction does not occur if the grating period is smaller than the light wavelength. But the wavelength is much shorter inside the solar cell than in air or glass, thus by placing the grating at an interface with a high refractive index contrast, and choosing the grating period to be slightly smaller than the shortest wavelength of interest, all the light diffracted by the grating (by addition of a reciprocal lattice wave-vector) propagates forward into the solar cell, reducing reflection [3,4]. The intensity of the effect depends on the scattering efficiency of the grating, which in turn depends on the refractive index contrast, among other factors. A viable approach to overcome the difficulty of finding materials with the appropriate refractive indexes is based on porous or mixed layers, but the maximum usable refractive index is still limited by the choice of materials with low absorption in the wavelength range of interest.

Topological insulators (TI) nanowires (NW) are an emerging class of structures, promising both novel quantum effects and potential applications in low-power electronics, thermoelectrics and spintronics. However, investigating the electronic states of TI NWs is complicated, due to their small lateral size, especially at room temperature. Here, we perform scanning probe based nanoscale imaging to resolve the local surface potential landscapes of Bi2Te3 nanowires (NWs) at 300 K. We found equipotential rings around the NWs perimeter that we attribute to azimuthal 1D modes. Along the NW axis, these modes are altered, forming potential ripples in the local density of states, due to intrinsic disturbances. Potential mapping of electrically biased NWs enabled us to accurately determine their conductivity which was found to increase with the decrease of NW diameter, consistent with surface dominated transport. Our results demonstrate that TI NWs can pave the way to both exotic quantum states and novel electronic devices.

The moth-eye structure has been proposed several times as an antireflective coating to replace the standard optical thin films. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the feasibility of a dielectric moth-eye structure as an antireflective coating for high-index substrates, like GaAs. The fabricated photonic crystal has Si3N4 cones in a square lattice, sitting on top of a TiO2 index matching layer. This structure attains 1.4% of reflectance power losses in the operation spectral range of GaAs solar cells (440–870 nm), a 12.5% relative reduction of reflection power losses in comparison with a standard bilayer. The work presented here considers a fabrication process based on laser interference lithography and dry etching, which are compatible with solar cell devices. The experimental results are consistent with scattering matrix simulations of the fabricated structures. In a broader spectral range (400–1800 nm), the simulation estimates that the nanostructure also significantly outperforms the standard bilayer coating (3.1% vs. 4.5% reflection losses), a result of interest for multijunction tandem solar cells.

We report on the study of arrays of 60 nm wide cobalt antidots, nanopatterned using focused ion beam milling. Square and hexagonal symmetry arrays have been studied, with varying antidot densities and lattice constant from 150 up to 300 nm. We find a strong increase of the arrays' magnetic coercivity with respect to the unpatterned film, which is monotonic as the antidot density increases. Additionally, there is a strong influence of the array symmetry to the in-plane magnetic anisotropy: square arrays exhibit fourfold symmetry and hexagonal arrays exhibit sixfold symmetry. The above findings are corroborated by magnetic imaging and micromagnetic modeling, which show the magnetic structure of the arrays to depend strongly on the array morphology.

The fabrication of a novel optofluidic chip using nanochannels optimized for DNA-stretched molecules and optical detection by enhanced fluorescence is reported. The chips are composed of a series of microchannels that allow the transport of molecules in the femto-liter per second inside a fluid or gas. The nanochannels are surrounded by a photonic crystal structure to enhance the emission of fluorescent light from the molecules, which can travel along the nanochannel, allowing for enhanced optical detection of the molecules in motion. The photonic crystal structure provides an enhancement up to 2.5 times in the light emitted from fluorescent molecules inside the nanochannels which increases to around 250 when normalized to the area of the nanochannels emitting fluorescence. The results may help to the detection of fluorescent molecules (like marked-DNA) in series by speeding it and allowing the use of less sophisticated equipment.

Magnetic antidot arrays are groups of ordered holes patterned on a continuous magnetic film. They can be used as magnonic crystals with potential application in microwave devices [1], for magnetically-active plasmonics [2], and for biosensing applications [3]. We have followed two different routes to obtain magnetic antidots on Co, Permalloy (Py), and Co/Py films with different characteristics. Focused ion beam allowed obtaining hexagonal or square lattice antidot arrays with long-range order (hole diameter d=55nm, periodicity p=150-300nm) [4], whereas oblique deposition onto nanoporous alumina templates was used to obtain arrays with only hexagonal short-range order (d=40nm, p=105nm) [5]. The arrays were studied by magneto-optic Kerr effect, magnetic force microscopy (MFM) and micromagnetic simulations. It is shown how the coercivity increases with the density of antidots and the magnetic anisotropy axes strongly depend on the array symmetry. The MFM images show the magnetic structure of the arrays to be commensurate to their morphology, with domain walls (DW) pinned by the holes and in some cases super-DW separating linear domains (see Fig.).

The catalytic effect of gold seed particles deposited on a substrate prior to zinc oxide (ZnO) thin film growth by magnetron sputtering was investigated. For this purpose, selected ultra thin gold layers, with thicknesses close to the percolation threshold, are deposited by thermal evaporation in ultra high vacuum (UHV) conditions and subsequently annealed to form gold nanodroplets. The ZnO structures are subsequently deposited by r.f. magnetron sputtering in a UHV chamber, and possible morphological differences between the ZnO grown on top of the substrate and on the gold are investigated. The results indicate a moderate catalytic effect for a deposited gold underlayer of 4 nm, quite close to the gold thin film percolation thickness.
