The change of authority in 1918 and the formation of the common Yugoslav state influenced as a matter of fact the historiography of the nations which had come to constitute the majorities in the new country. The Serbian, Croatian and Slovenian historians had not only to provide the historical justification of the new state and establish the right of its constituent nations to a state of their own, but also to cast their prehistory in a new mould. The new, majority narrative of the Serbian hstorians, and the new forms of their scientific argumentation, which were developed in the course of this process, have influenced Serbian historiography ever since. In the case of Serbian historiography, the view it formed about the Hungarians has incorporated all the prejudices and stereotypes which had developed in the course of the common history o f the two nations. This was especially true with regard to the historians who were born in the region which was called VojvodinaAajdaság after 1918. In 1928 these scholars organised a separate Historical Society (Istorijsko druStvo) at Novi Sad/újvidék, with the purpose of writing the “true history" of the Serbs ،،based on a real scientific footing". The present paper reviews the works, scientific insights and motivations of the Serbian historians who were active in the interwar period, with an emphasis on the formation and development of their views on Hungary and the Hungarians.
