This article examines the life and career of Sadie Kneller Miller, a journalist who enjoyed a thirty-year career as a baseball reporter, national and international correspondent, and photojournalist at the turn of the twentieth century. Her many accomplishments include being one of the first women to cover a sports beat for a newspaper, covering armed conflicts in Spanish-controlled Morocco, and obtaining exclusive interviews with figures such as Pancho Villa. Miller's career was also distinct in several important ways from those of most women journalists of her time, particularly in how she negotiated her professional ambitions with traditional gender roles. Miller earned a prominent contemporary reputation and left behind a rich collection of print and visual journalism, but her career has largely been lost to posterity. Using an unexplored and unprocessed archival collection, this article reconstructs Miller's career, emphasizing her most significant work in each journalistic function she performed, and shows the ways Miller both challenged and conformed to norms and expectations of women journalists of the period. This study explores the gendered narratives constructed in the coverage of the 2016 Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) European Championship football tournament in selected English newspapers. Using qualitative textual analysis, the study tests the efficacy of three established classifications and draws them together with a new, fourth classification thereby creating a typology of the (re)presentations of emphasised femininity. The analysis suggests that despite the increasing prevalence of female sports journalists and the increasing coverage of female athletes in a variety of sports, including football, the reporting of men's football in the English popular press continues to cast women in subordinate and sexualised roles. This 2-part longitudinal study uses quantitative content analysis of newspapers to investigate gender dynamics in producing news on equality in sports, it analyzes differences in Title IX coverage by reporter gender to determine whether female journalists advocated more aggressively for women's equality than their male counterparts did. The study's first part uses content analysis of volume and placement of articles about Title IX, by journalist gender, and discusses the implications of how patterns of volume and placement have changed over time. The second part identifies advocacy and opposition frames used in the conflict over Title IX: applies content analysis of frames used. by journalist gender: and discusses implications of reporting differences and changes over time for equality. The article considers the working experience of women sports journalists. Women sports journalists for French language newspapers in Switzerland are examined to determine how the power structures of their organization affect their work. It is found that the work experience of the women was dependent upon the relationship between their status in journalism and their personalities. Three strategies are identified through which the women journalists coped with their situations, either by conforming to the male-dominated concept of sports journalism, by resisting it actively, or by resisting it through adaptations of the male role.

While the impact of sexual harassment in the workplace has been well documented, little sexual harassment research has been conducted focusing on the women who work in the sport industry. This study explored the extent to which female sport print media professionals (i.e., sports editors, sportswriters, sports columnists) were subjected to sexually harassing behaviors in the workplace. Of the women who participated in the study (N = 112), over half of the participants indicated that they had encountered some form of sexual harassment over the 12 months before participating in the study. The perpetrators included their immediate supervisors, coworkers, members of the sport media, athletes, and employees of sport organizations. The study also identified the forms of sexual harassment encountered and attitudes toward harassment in the workplace. This study surveyed sports editors about gender-related issues in hiring and coverage. Although many editors estimate reader interest to be low and do not believe coverage of women's sports should be improved, results also suggest that sports editors' values and beliefs have shifted over the past decade in ways that could lead to more opportunities for women journalists and to eventual improvements in coverage of female athletes and women's sports. While it is generally known that sports journalism is an area of gender disparity, no major academic study has established the proportion of women sports writers in the UK press. Although female sports broadcasters have increased their visibility in the United Kingdom, the same is not true in the print media. This research first examines the current visibility of women sports journalists in the national UK press, by counting by-lines according to gender. Second, a study explores if the 2012 London Olympic Games had any effect on the proportion of female sports writers in the UK press, by comparing sports by-lines in a sample 6 months before and after the games. Furthermore, these results are compared to a decade earlier to see if the situation has improved. The findings indicate that the proportion of female sports writers in the UK press is lower than in comparable countries, with little improvement over time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper addresses the gap in literature that ignores sport as practiced, managed or communicated by women by focusing on sportswriter Mary Garber, and the meanings engendered through her coverage of black high school and collegiate athletics in the Twin City Sentinel of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, during the mid-1940s through early 1960s. She received numerous prestigious awards during a career that spanned seven decades, but limited historical treatises examine this influential figure. Few scholars have attempted to understand the history of women in this male-dominated field or the sociocultural forces and obstacles that contextualise and hinder their contributions. It is a sad irony that Garber was atypical for her time, and remains so in the contemporary climate. Therefore, one major objective of this paper is to create a discourse through Garber's body of work that will help to eradicate the gender inequalities of women in sport media. In contrast with representations of women and racial minorities in mainstream sport media, this paper demonstrates that Garber addressed pertinent social concerns and supplemented dominant ideological content with more inclusive depictions of the population she covered by resisting white, masculine, heteronormative assumptions about which sports and athletes merit attention.1 [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article focuses on a byline. In 1890, "Ella Black" appeared as a regular baseball writer, covering the Pittsburgh club in the Players' League for the national sports publication Sporting Life. The magazine billed her as a "novelty:" a woman covering baseball with a feminine touch. The authenticity of her identity became a source of debate by Sporting Life writers with some claiming her articles were penned by a man writing under a pseudonym. More than 120 years later, nothing more is known about Black than what appeared in Sporting Life that season, leaving in doubt who was behind the byline. This article is an attempt to settle that question and determine whether she was indeed a pioneer for women in sports journalism or just a cheap publicity stunt by Sporting Life. This article examines the groundbreaking contributions of Jane Dixon as a New York City sportswriter in the 1920s. She typified the way that most women entered the field: by writing about male sports from a so-called "woman's angle." Her stories were especially noteworthy for two reasons: she covered the bloody and unseemly world of boxing more prolifically than perhaps any other woman of the time, thus standing out as a pioneer among her gender; and, despite being assigned to write from a woman's angle that inevitably stressed stereotypically feminine interests, she also used her writing as a forum to support a progressive feminist agenda. Thus, she reflected the wider, conflicted mood faced by women of the era, who found themselves caught between progressive feminism and a cultural backlash that sought to reprioritize marriage and domesticity. The article presents a 1988 demographic study of women journalists in the sports departments of major daily newspapers. The study found only 96 female sportswriters working in 69 of 109 major newspapers across the U.S. More than half of the respondents said that they cover important assignments in their papers and receive salaries equivalent to those of their male peers. However, a large number also reported experiencing discrimination from their male colleagues and from people within the sports field.

The article discusses issues such as discrimination, equal opportunity, and the establishment of parity between the sexes in sports and sports reporting. In their beginnings, women's sports were limited to a few so-called female sports like swimming, figure skating, tennis, aerobics, or gymnastics. There was also a difference in the quantity of media reporting. Female athletes and sports were highly underrepresented, and some major media sports, most notably football and baseball, were male only, without parallel female teams for the media to cover. From the point of view of parity, sports reporting is getting better. While some old clichés still appear, equality between the two sexes has become more and more accepted. The number of female sports journalists has increased, and media coverage of men's and women's sports has become, from a quantitative as well as qualitative point of view, more and more similar.
