The transition into higher education (HE) is a particularly challenging process for students due to a large variety of difficulties and requirements. Moreover, increasing student numbers and diversity in European HE have complexified the issue of the successful transition to university. Consequently, it is important to further develop our understanding of the heterogeneity of students and the specific challenges that impact their successful and less stressful transitions into higher education. This paper contributes to this scientific endeavour. More precisely, a study was carried out among 1,048 first-year students from a French-speaking Belgian university. Using latent profile analysis, our results yielded five profiles representing different combinations of achievement predictors (high school grade, socio-economic status, informed-choice, and self-efficacy beliefs). When comparing the profiles, our results further highlighted key differences in the way students experienced the specific challenges associated with the transition and succeeded at the end of the first year. The discussion of the results allowed us to provide practical implications and future perspectives on the thorny issue of diversity into the transition to HE.

Purpose: Reading disability (RD) is frequently associated with deficits in auditory processing (i.e., processing speech and non-linguistic sounds). Several hypotheses exist regarding the link between RD and auditory processing, but none fully account for the range/variety of auditory impairments reported in the literature. These impairments have been primarily summarized by qualitative reviews and meta-analytic evidence for most auditory processing impairments is lacking. Method: We conducted a PRISMA-compliant meta-analysis quantifying the degree to which individuals with RD are impaired on four categories of auditory processing abilities: frequency discrimination, intensity discrimination, duration discrimination, and gap detection. This methodology was accepted and executed as a Registered Report. Results: Auditory processing impairments of medium to large effect size were present in RD vs. typical groups for all categories: frequency (g = 0.79), duration (g = 0.80), and intensity discrimination (g = 0.60), as well as gap detection (g = 0.80). No differences were found across task designs (i.e., testing methods). g g g g Conclusion This meta-analysis documents a large, multiple-domain non-linguistic, auditory processing impairment in RD. Contrary to previous studies, we found a significant deficit in intensity discrimination. The impairments described here must be accounted for by future causal hypotheses in RD and suggest that auditory processing impairments are broader than previously thought.

The Recipe 4 Success preventive intervention targeted multiple factors critical to the health and well-being of toddlers living in poverty. This randomized controlled trial, which was embedded within Early Head Start home visits for 12 weeks, included 242 racially and ethnically diverse families (51% girls; toddler mean age = 2.58 years; data collected 2016-2019). Compared to parents in usual practice home visits, parents in Recipe 4 Success displayed greater sensitive scaffolding of toddlers' learning and more responsive food parenting practices (Cohen's d = 0.21-0.30). Toddlers in Recipe 4 Success exhibited greater self-regulation and had healthier eating habits (Cohen's d = |0.16-0.35|). Results highlight the value of Recipe 4 Success in promoting parent and toddler behavior change that could have life-long benefits.

Transition to school experiences influence children's wellbeing, development, and learning at the time of transition and future transitions. Effective transitions require schools to engage with children and families in ways that connect and empower them in the transition process. In this study children aged 3-6 years and their teachers used a Funds of Knowledge (FoK) and Funds of Identity (FoI) lens to reimagine transition practices for children and their families. Through a design-based thinking process, qualitative data was collected from four professional learning days, as well as individual coaching sessions, observations of the first days of school, and stakeholder interviews. Case studies were developed in collaboration with each participating school. Findings showed three design principles developed by the teacher participants positively impacted teachers' and schools' preparation for transitions. All stakeholders described the design-based process as useful in transforming transition practices and thinking about transitions from different perspectives.

In Manitoba, more than half of marriages end with divorce. Many of these families include children. This article addresses the need for school counsellors to understand the impact that divorce has on children's lives. Children require a method to deal with unresolved feelings related to divorce. A school counsellor can support children through the separation process by examining how divorcing parents' decisions disrupt the family system, understanding how children progress through the post-divorce developmental tasks, and exploring possible therapeutic approaches.

The purpose of this study is to examine the debt burdens, perceived capabilities, and mental health of young adults. Panel data constructed from the 2009 to 2013 waves of the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) and its Transition to Adulthood (TA) supplement are used in this study. The multinomial logistic regression analysis findings showed that the amount of revolving debt was negatively associated with young adults' mental health. On the other hand, perceived abilities in acting responsibly, in solving problems, and in managing money were positively associated with the mental health of young adults. The fixed effects regression analysis results indicate that the amounts of credit card and student loan debt from the previous period were negatively associated with an increase in the mental health continuum scores of young adults over time. A discussion of the implications of this study's key findings for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners is included.

This article explores the advantages of viewing intelligence not as a fixed trait residing within an individual, but rather as a person × task × situation interaction. The emphasis in the article is on the role of persons solving tasks embedded in situations involving learning, intellectual abilities, and competencies. The article opens with a consideration of the role of situations in intelligent behavior. The article then discusses how intelligence is more similar to creativity and wisdom, in terms of the role of situations, than many psychologists have realized. Then the article reviews the role of situations in identity-based and irrational thinking and in conspiratorial thinking and cults. Next the article discusses the demonstrated importance of situations in assessment, but also notes the difficulties in sampling situations. Finally, the article draws conclusions, in particular, that, given our lack of situation-based tests, we need to be more modest in our interpretations results from conventional tests of intelligence.

Endeavors supporting college students' positive psychosocial development are gaining attention and investment in various countries and social contexts. Higher education experiences provide new academic, social, and vocational advancement opportunities at a critical developmental stage. However, higher education can also cause distress due to the challenges and stressors present during this new stage of increased independence. The Social Emotional Health Survey-Higher Education (SEHS-HE) assesses the core psychosocial strengths of individuals transitioning from secondary schools into institutions of higher education (IHE) to aid campus student support services. The present study sought to extend the SEHS-HE research by examining its application with college student samples from Mexico (n = 4,207), United States (n = 1,638), and Spain (n = 1,734). Confirmatory factor analyses investigated the hypothesized SEHS-HE higher-order factor model. The Mexico sample returned an acceptable model fit, but the USA and Spain samples had a suboptimal fit; hence, we explored alternative models. A two-level structure had full invariance for all three samples. This study extends the current scholarship on the conceptual model and psychometric properties of SEHS-HE. The discussion focuses on implications for future research to enhance SEHS-HE in national and cross-national research and practice.

The aim of this study is to examine the experiences of students who were prepared for the High School Transition System (LGS) during the pandemic period from the perspective of mothers. The research was planned in the general qualitative research design. Data were collected by interviewing eleven participants on online platforms. A semi-structured interview form prepared by the researchers was used in the interviews. As a result of the thematic analysis, themes were emerged, namely learning, organization, relationships and need for support. It is seen those positive relationships within the family and at school before the pandemic are supportive factors in coping with the consequences of the pandemic process. In the family, it is seen that the parents who follow the exam process are mothers. In the observations of the families, the schools quickly adapted to the academic process and responded to the needs of the students. In the families' experience, the school's guidance services did not fully meet the expectations in terms of supporting students emotionally. The steps taken by the MoNE, on the other hand, helped the students to pass the process more easily.

Undocumented immigrants arriving in the United States as minors navigate tremendous constraints as they transition into adolescence and adulthood. Exclusionary immigration laws profoundly shape and complicate the attainment of important milestones and the decisions undocumented minors make about their adult futures. A significant body of research, largely focused on children who arrive when they are 12 years old and younger, has examined the impact of legal exclusion on the coming-of-age experiences of undocumented minors. However, we know less about the experiences of teenage arrivals. In this article, we focus on young Latin American migrants and provide an overview of how legal exclusion contours undocumented minors' adolescent and adult transitions; we also call attention to the divergent experiences of youth who arrive during childhood and youth who arrive during adolescence. Throughout the article, we emphasize how the timing of immigration--the developmental stage when a young person migrates--creates meaningful differences in the barriers undocumented minors confront.

Purpose: Previous research has demonstrated that typically developing children, verbal children with a diagnosis of autism, children with Down syndrome, children with developmental language disorder, and children with dyslexia can all benefit from orthographic support during word learning tasks. This study sought to determine if minimally speaking or nonspeaking children with a diagnosis of autism would also demonstrate an orthographic facilitation effect during a computer-based remote word learning task. Method: Twenty-two school-age children with a diagnosis of autism and little to no spoken language learned four novel words by contrasting the words with known objects. Two novel words were taught with orthographic support present, and two were taught without orthographic support. Participants were exposed to the words a total of 12 times and then given an immediate posttest to assess identification. Parent report measures of receptive vocabulary, expressive vocabulary, autism symptomatology, and reading skills were also collected. Results: During learning tasks, participants performed equally well whether orthographic support was given or not. For the posttest, however, participants performed significantly better for words that were taught with orthographic support. The presence of orthography improved accuracy and supported a greater number of participants to reach the passing criterion compared to the absence of orthography. Orthographic representations aided the word learning of those with lower expressive language significantly more than those with higher expressive language. Conclusions: Minimally speaking or nonspeaking children with a diagnosis of autism benefit from orthographic support when learning new words. Further investigation is warranted to determine if this effect holds during face-to-face interactions using augmentative and alternative communication systems.

While child development is well-recognized as a complex process which could hardly be decomposed into separate lines or domains in contemporary psychological theories, the decomposition approach is widely used in empirical studies. Based on the cultural-historical theory, this study argues for adopting the unit of analysis as a way to bridge this gap, and finds "role adjustment" as a suitable unit to analyse child development during the transition to school. The case of a 5-year-old second-generation Chinese Australian child's transition to school (with a total of 34 h of observation and 5 h of interview) is presented to verify its feasibility and to illustrate how it could be achieved in a research practice. The case study demonstrates that a child's role adjustment is in essence a process of transforming his/her role system, during which his/her major roles, the relation of the major roles, as well as his/her role-taking patterns change as a whole, and by tracing a child's role adjustment trajectory, how the child is learning and developing, what difficulties he/she encounter, and why these difficulties appear become clear.

To date, virtually no studies have examined toddlers' non-response in developmental tasks. This study investigates data from 3667 toddlers to address (1) whether two aspects of non-response (completion and engagement) are separable, (2) how stable these aspects are from ages two to three, (3) how non-response relates to background characteristics, and (4) whether non-response at ages two and three predicts early academic skills at age six. Structural equation modelling shows that completion and engagement are separable constructs, relatively stable across age, and related to several background characteristics. Especially engagement predicts later academic performance. Results show that non-response in behavioural tasks in toddlers is not random, increasing the likelihood of sampling bias and lack of generalizability in developmental studies.

Co-design and youth participatory action research are promising methodologies for increasing youth engagement in well-being interventions. The current study included 10 recent high school graduates employed as youth advisors to co-design a youth-friendly positive psychology intervention targeting the post-school transition. The youth advisors received foundational training in positive psychology, psychological needs theory and emerging adulthood. They held regular meetings to develop a Positive Transitions programme (PTP) text messaging intervention, informed by discussion of key themes, issues and relevant practical tips. This paper aims to examine the co-design process from the perspective of the youth advisors. Each youth advisor completed a survey, and six of the advisors also participated in a focus group exploring their co-design experiences. Youth advisors noted a range of personal benefits from the co-design experience including learning, enjoyment, teamwork, achievement, and pride. Areas for improvement included clarity of the project scope and the provision of support and feedback. Insights from this process are discussed, with the aim of guiding future work seeking to design youth-friendly well-being interventions.

Changing from elementary to secondary school is a life event that every child has to pass. Previous research has shown that some children feel more threatened by the transition than others. In the present study children's expectations concerning the impending transition to secondary school were analyzed and it was investigated how individual levels of social competencies, aggressive behavior, peer-acceptance and victimization experiences are related to the expectations regarding the transition to secondary school. The results demonstrated that empathy and aggression are strongly related to the perception of the impending transition as challenge whereas victimization and peer-acceptance were related to the perception of the transition as threat. Furthermore, with the help of a cluster analysis, four groups of children showing different patterns of expectations were identified. The findings give valuable information about children's perceptions of the impending school transition. It is discussed how teachers could support children to cope better with transition processes.

This study examined potential impacts of financial resources and values on emerging adults' choice in committed relationships (N = 424, 26-35 years). Guided by Deacon and Firebaugh's (1988) Family Resource Management theory, financial self-sufficiency and forming a committed relationship were conceptualized as two salient goals of emerging adulthood. Multinomial logistic regression was used to determine the effects of financial self-sufficiency, values, and personal background factors on choice of committed relationship status. Findings indicated that emerging adults with fewer financial resources chose to live apart; however, the effects of career values were a stronger predictor of their relationship status. In contrast, neither financial resources nor career values differentiated between cohabiting and married emerging adults.

Using a dataset that includes over 17 million students from across all 50 states, we estimate the causal impact of making structural transitions into middle school (in grades 4, 5, 6, or 7) on student math and reading achievement trajectories. This dataset provides an ideal opportunity to engage in the valuable scientific practice of conducting replication studies. Prior research on the impacts of middle school transitions is of high quality and rests on a strong causal warrant, but the study settings vary greatly and use data from a prior decade. We conduct a replication (i.e., using the same methods on different data) using larger, broader, and more recent data. We extend prior analyses in ways that may further strengthen the causal warrant. Finally, we explore heterogeneity of effects across subgroups and states, which may help reconcile differences in the magnitude of estimated effects across studies.

We examined the prospective associations between two indicators of mother-youth emotional climate (i.e., maternal affect, dyadic cohesiveness) during a peer problem discussion and youth coping with peer stress following entry into middle school. We also investigated youth baseline respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) as a moderator of these associations given its role in physiological stress regulation. Participants were 100 mother-youth dyads (53% boys; M[subscript age] = 11.05 years; 43% ethnic minorities). More positive maternal affect at Time 1 (spring of 5th grade) was associated with more primary and secondary control engagement coping and advice-seeking at Time 2 (fall of 6th grade); greater dyadic cohesiveness was prospectively linked with more advice-seeking only. Further, the positive association between maternal affect and primary control coping was only evident for youth who showed lower (not higher) baseline RSA. We discuss implications for jointly considering the mother-youth relational context and youth physiological regulatory capacity towards understanding coping socialization.

Transition of learning from secondary to higher education demands new students to do academic adjustments, especially towards the change from rote learning to student-centered learning. Student-centered learning requires students to process learning material with more depth and to regulate their own learning. These skills often relate with academic achievement. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of processing and regulation of learning conducted by first-level students on academic achievement. Other factors that affect academic achievement were explored too, such as student's sex, parental support, conception of learning, and learning orientation . This study used mixed method. Quantitative data was obtained through Inventarisasi Cara Belajar (ICB) or Learning Style Inventory, which was filled by 180 third-semester students. ICB was used for measuring the processing and regulation of learning and their effect on academic achievement, which is depicted by Grade Point Average (GPA). Qualitative data was obtained through group interviews. Results of the study indicate that lack of regulation is the only one variable that can predict student academic achievement with a negative correlation. Several other factors were found to affect student academic achievement, including learning orientation, learning conceptions, learning motivation, academic commitment, and parental support. Researcher then designed a training based on reciprocal-teaching approach as an intervention with students as the participant.

In a general sense, psychology is a science that studies human and animal behaviours, and the reasons of these behaviours. The symbolic foundation date of psychology is 1879. In this year, Wilheml Wundt (1832-1920) established a psychology laboratory in Leipzig. Psychology is accepted to have started as a science with the establishment of this psychology laboratory. From the point that started with Wilhelm Wundt and his colleagues on, the period of consciousness has mostly been investigated through the method of introspection and the conscious of human has been tried to be analyzed (Otrar, Eminoglu Küçüktepe, Küçüktepe, 2010). Psychology is a branch of science that aims at examining the interaction between environment, human being and behaviour. This branch of science is divided into sub-fields such as experimental psychology, social psychology, psychometric psychology and applied psychology. [image omitted] There are a lot of sub-branches under applied psychology. One of them is educational psychology. Educational psychology is about implementing the findings of psychology in the field of education. Educational psychology mainly composes two sub-fields. These are developmental psychology and psychology of learning. Developmental psychology is a field of psychology that examines the physical, psychological, cognitive and behavioral changes of a person from the birth to the death. Developmental psychology is one of the basic fields from which educational psychology benefits; because being aware of the developmental features of students' ages ensures an increase in the efficiency of educational period.

Through the development and field testing of an instrument designed to measure youth social capital in the context of postsecondary transitions, this research addresses the need for theory-driven measures of social capital among youth. The results offer preliminary evidence that dimensions of youth social capital, including network structure and network content, can be reliably measured and that these dimensions of social capital are interrelated in a manner consistent with theory. The results also offer initial support for the validity of the social capital construct within the domain of youth postsecondary transitions. Taken together, the findings provide a foundation for continued research that might surmount inadequate measures and theoretical disputes to encompass more careful and rigorous empirical scrutiny when it comes to the measurement of social capital among children and adolescents.

This article draws on the concept of structural lag to expand the notion of transitions in higher education contexts beyond linear and age-differentiated. Research reported here responds to scholars who are taking theories of transition into conceptually new landscapes. Using a rhizomic data analysis of a doctoral research project, the idea of assemblage is reconsidered as dis-assemblage for its value in conceptualizing transition. This article demonstrates benefits for theorizing transitions as non-linear, ongoing, dynamic, fluid, and continuous to better understand the reciprocal interplay among contextual influences on students' lived experiences. A proposition is given for higher educators to transform outdated structural lag-based practices and consider benefits of expanding theory and practice of transition towards transition as being-becoming.

In this qualitative study, we explored the opportunities and difficulties experienced by cognitively high-ability students during the transition to higher education. Although high-ability individuals undoubtedly have the cognitive capacity to excel academically, research has demonstrated persistent underachievement among this group of students, and that they may face particular challenges within higher education compared to primary and secondary education. To better understand their experiences, 10 current and former highability students were selected by means of scores on standardized intelligence tests to participate in semi-structured interviews. Results revealed many similarities between the participants. The majority of the participants reported insufficient study skills and not knowing what was expected of them as obstacles during their transition to higher education. They also cited a lack of challenge in previous schooling as a source of transitional difficulties. On-time entry into higher education, good study skills, and clear expectations led to a more successful transition. Contextual factors, such as perceived support from the learning environment, seemed to have a facilitating effect on the students' transition experience but did not seem to determine the success of a student's transition on their own.

Adventure-based learning is used by behavioral health providers to connect clients to therapeutic activities outside traditional settings. These approaches often aim to build internal and external assets that support positive youth development. Here we evaluate the impact of an experiential learning curriculum on youth development and identify program characteristics that support development of positive assets. The evaluation included classroom field observations, a pre/post survey of developmental assets, semi-structured student interviews, and focus groups with school employees. Program staff were successful creating a supportive environment, but there was no significant difference in average student asset scores before and after each course. Students described the program as an opportunity to explore their own backyard while stepping outside their comfort zone through teamwork and leadership activities. Evaluation of individual programs can build a suite of best practices for adventure-based education. In particular, emphasis on "challenge by choice" and youth-led activities resonated with students.

The transition from preschool to elementary school requires high adaptive behaviours. Our study's aim is to analyze the reciprocal effects between self-regulation and behaviour problems during this transitional phase. Study results are based on longitudinal data collected at preschool and elementary school. Children's level of behaviour problems at school is predicted by preschool self-regulation skills and earlier behaviour problems. An optimal self-regulation is a substantial resource during the transitional phase and early interventions targeting at strengthening self-regulation skills are indicated.

The study focused on challenges and gaps faced by children during the transition period from early childhood development (ECD) to primary education and possible solutions to them. It adopted the qualitative methodological approach through the use of Focus Group Discussions with councillors, education officials, child care workers, chiefs, parents and teachers. Document analysis provided an additional layer of transition practices in the Zimbabwean Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education through the analysis of various circulars, ECD syllabus and the Early Reading Initiative Modules for ECD A and B. Data analysis was done according to emerging themes and descriptive statistics. The study covered two districts of Zimbabwe, namely, Goromonzi and Marondera. Participants were purposively sampled on the basis of characteristics relevant to transitioning of children from early childhood to formal education. Participants included councillors, education officials, child care workers, chiefs, parents and teachers. A total of fifteen schools from each district were randomly selected. Findings from the study showed that participants were not aware of the policy on transition and as such are likely not to follow the demands of the policy when teaching children. It was also very clear from the responses that the participants are aware of the importance of the transitioning period to the child. Lack of qualified teachers and expertise were cited as a challenge by participants. The study also found out that lack of resources (material) is another challenge which affects successful transitions. Participants also cited anxiety and withdrawal, difficulty in working independently and following instructions, difficulty with behaviour regulation (such as the ability to delay gratification) and reluctance or refusal to attend school as challenges. Distance travelled by children posed problems for children. Lack of commitment by some parents in the transition process was also found by the study to be a challenge. Findings also revealed that a number of stakeholders are important for effective transitioning of children which include teachers, parents, community, government through its different ministries, health workers and non-governmental organisations.

A positive and successful transition into University is crucial if students are to stay the course in higher education and experience successful outcomes. However, challenges exist in ensuring a connected transition from secondary and further education to higher education that is inclusive and supports the diversity in our current undergraduate student body. We set out to explore the diverse experiences that first year students report about their recent transition to a post-1992 University. We were particularly interested in how these experiences and challenges differed by ethnicity. This is incredibly important given the disparity, recognised in the sector, in the attainment of Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) students compared to their White counterparts and particularly pertinent that this trend reverses attainment patterns in secondary education. This paper summarises some of our key findings in determining the challenges facing students from different backgrounds in their transition to university. It argues that Universities will have to change their transition and wider offer to ensure that diverse students feel welcomed and develop a sense belonging in Higher Education in order for them to achieve successful outcomes.

The purpose of this study was to get an insight about how high school female students perceive the transition to university life, and to understand the transition experience of university female students in the first semester. An exploratory study design was used where 166 high school female students and 88 first year university female students participated in the study. Questionnaires consisting mainly of open-ended questions were used. Data analysis employed descriptive statistics, and categorization for open-ended questions. Findings from high school female students showed that they prefer universities that are nearer home, so as: to maintain social connections, ensure security and family support. Findings showed that high school female students worry about socialization issues, finance management, language, sexual harassment, staff-student relation and academic. On transition experience, result showed that university students relied on parents' support, friends and senior students, but rarely consulted with instructors or used university support systems. During the first semester, students felt fear, were afraid, frightened, confused and disorientated. Also university female students rue about first semester academic outcomes, and as they journey with education they worry about failure, peer pressure, sexual harassment, pregnancy, and substance abuse. This study concluded that students at the high school need exposure on the realities of university life. The culture of seeking help should also be instilled early at the high school to give them exposure on realities of campus life especially through university community services.

Helicopter parenting is a relatively new phenomenon that describes a specific kind of overparenting that is focused on the well-being and success of children that can impact young adults' general sense of life satisfaction, overall mood, and the development of necessary life skills. Using Bowen theory, the author will illustrate through a case study, how hyperattentive parenting can be conceptualized as a function of the family projection process, more specifically how triangles are used to diffuse anxiety in the parental system due to marital strife or transitions in the family life cycle. The author will use Bowen theory to highlight how one person can take responsibility for managing oneself in family relationships and work on emotional maturity in relationship to others. Finally, the author suggests that Bowen theory may be useful to college counselors who may be seeking a conceptual framework to work toward theory-based interventions for treating emerging adults.

The transition outcomes for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families are less than desirable. A survey of parent stressors, resources, coping/appraisals, and adaptation to transition was completed by 226 parents. The mediating mechanisms between stressors and parent outcomes were identified. At the indicator level, three stressors (i.e., autism severity, mental health crisis/challenging behaviors, and filial obligation), four resources (i.e., general social support, transition planning quality, parent-teacher alliance, and parenting efficacy), and three coping styles (i.e., problem-focused coping, avoidance-focused coping, and optimism) predicted parents' outcomes (i.e., burden, transition experience, subjective health, and quality of life). At the structural level, optimism, emotion-coping strategies, and resources mediated the relationships between stressors and parental outcomes. Research and practical applications are discussed.

Autistic women often struggle with the onset of menstruation, a key transition point in the female reproductive lifespan. Presently, there is no research investigating how autistic people navigate the menopausal transition, and whether it poses additional challenges in addition to those already faced by neurotypical women. As a preliminary participatory study in this area, we conducted an online focus group with seven autistic individuals, aged 49-63 years (median=64.5 years) and assigned female at birth, to explore the state of knowledge about the menopause in autism, difficulties the menopause might bring, support that might be needed, and what questions require scientific investigation. Thematic analysis of the discussion generated three themes: (a) lack of knowledge and understanding; (b) cracking the mask and adaptive functioning; and (c) finding support. Themes suggested a lack of professional knowledge, understanding and communication about menopause for autistic people, and an absence of support. Menopause was discussed as heightening pre-existing and generating new cognitive, social, emotional and sensory difficulties. This study illustrates the need for greater focus of attention towards how autistic people cope with the major life transition of menopause.

Transitioning to university can be anxiety-provoking for all students. The relationship between social anxiety, autistic traits and students' social network structure, and perceived support is poorly understood. This study used a group-matched design where autistic students (n = 28) and typically developing students (n = 28) were matched on sex, age (17-19 years), ethnicity, pre-university academic performance and degree subject at university. Autistic students reported greater transition to university worries, and a smaller social network size compared to typically developing students, though perceived similar levels of support from their social networks. Autistic and typically developing students showed differential patterns of association with both autistic traits and social anxiety. Broader clinical and practical implications of findings are discussed.

Teacher-student trust is associated with the social and emotional development of students, their school connectedness and engagement, and their academic achievement. However, few studies have examined how trust develops between teachers and students in ninth grade, a critical year in high school for students to start off on-track. Even less research has examined how teacher-student trust develops from the perspective of students to help identify specific teacher classroom practices that are effective at doing so, particularly at the start of the school year when students' relationships and connections to high school are just beginning to take shape. Drawing on data from a longitudinal, qualitative study of ninth-grade teacher-student relationships in one neighborhood public high school in Chicago, this study highlights three critical classroom practices that appear particularly effective for helping to build trusting teacher-student relationships during the first 10 weeks of high school. Highlighting the perspectives and insights of ninth grade students, this analysis finds that (1) the priority that teachers place on specific classroom practices, and (2) the timing of when these practices are used by teachers, are both critical in establishing teacher-student trust--an essential ingredient in helping ninth grade students gain important social and school connections during their transition to high school. By highlighting the voices of ninth grade youth, this study provides valuable insights for educators aiming to use specific classroom-based practices that are essential for helping ninth grade students make valuable school connections and get on-track right from the start of the year.

Based on the temporal framework of transition experiences, this study tested time-graded patterns of family resource effects on children's and early adolescents' psychological adjustment during a time of multiple transitions. Using data of a longitudinal study including 2,020 German children covering the age span between 8 and 12 (n[subscript boys] = 1,035, n[subscript girls] = 985), internalizing and externalizing problems were predicted by parent-child relationship and family's educational background in a multi-group structural equation model, applying time-lagged autoregressive models. The results showed positive resource effects especially through parent-child relationship. The gender-specific effect patterns over time supported the assumption of stronger resource effects when early puberty onset and secondary school transition co-occurred. Thus, it is important to provide support for this vulnerable group during times of multiple transitions.

In this essay, Kip Kline and Kathleen Knight Abowitz use Walker Percy's novel "The Moviegoer" to examine the existential plight of young Americans today who, as they turn the broad and long corner from youth to adulthood, are engaged in a search for self-knowledge and identity construction. They are particularly interested in the young adult as "college student," engaged in the work of postsecondary education, autonomous from but often still very closely connected to their family of origin in a culture saturated by late-capitalist consumerism and commercial media. Kline and Knight Abowitz interpret this novel in order to examine a malaise specific to our current historical moment that may characterize how young people experience institutions such as U.S. colleges and universities as well as the institution of the contemporary American family. They also wish to show that particular themes in existentialism, which can be teased out in novels such as "The Moviegoer," can assist our analysis of the contemporary malaise of the college student and provide theorists, educators, and advocates with possible ways of responding to it.

Children's transition to school has been widely investigated, but most studies do not clearly define its starting point. By drawing on the cultural-historical concept of the social situation of development, and selecting 'role adjustment' as the unit of analysis, this paper seeks to clearly define the starting point of children's transition to school. Through a case study of two second-generation Chinese Australian children's role adjustment, this paper finds that it is the qualitative change in children's social situation of development that signifies the starting point of the dramatic adjustment of their role(s). In particular, the starting point of children's first dramatic role adjustment marks the starting point of their transition to school, and the starting points of children's following dramatic role adjustments mark the turning points of their transition to school.

Transitioning from primary school to secondary school is an important and defining stage for many pupils which can bring both positive and negative effects on pupil's wellbeing. It is a time that involves rapid physical, social and emotional development which can bring about feelings of loneliness, pressure of social acceptance, stress and a rise in depression and anxiety. While not all pupils will experience negative transition-related challenges, and post transition anxiety may settle within the first term, for a number of pupils the transition is an overwhelming process which requires a lot of support. Yet, little is known about the supportive relational practices that might attenuate the challenges pupils face as they move to secondary school. This article investigated the experiences of 8 newly transitioned Year 7 pupils as well as viewpoints and perceptions of 6 secondary school teachers. Specifically, the paper sought to understand the role of social and emotional learning (SEL) during the transition phase and the support systems in place to develop the pupils. The results from the semi-structured interviews highlighted the importance of belonging during this critical phase, followed by the need to improve the social processes and transitional support. Thus, in designing transition support activities, such efforts should strive to acclimate new secondary school pupils by providing inclusive, caring environments and positive connections with educators and peers.

College students transition from the parental home environment to the college environment. This study examined the transitioning role of parent/child relationships and religiosity in Christian college student heavy episodic drinking (HED). Analysis was conducted using data from a health-risk behavior survey administered on campus, n = 434. Believing the body is the temple of God was the only statistically significant variable in the logistic regression model, 78% less likely to engage in HED. These results show there is a transitioning role of parents during the college years with parents having less influence on HED than religious belief on a Christian college campus.

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between curiosity and well-being in 18- to 29-year-old individuals. In a group of 378 working emerging adults, a survey battery was administered to measure cognitive and sensory curiosity, achieved emerging adulthood, and-being, as well as select theoretically relevant demographic variables (e.g., gender, ethnicity, income). Moderated hierarchical regression analysis revealed that among the achieved adulthood criteria, achieving family capacity, role transition, and biological transition had positive effects on well-being, while achieving independence, interdependence, and norm compliance demonstrated a null effect. Cognitive and sensory curiosity and their interaction also had a positive effect on well-being. The contributions to emerging adulthood and curiosity theories and their empirical and practical implications are discussed.

Differences in motivation during adolescence relative to childhood and adulthood in autism was tested in a cross-sectional study. 156 Typically developing individuals and 79 individuals with autism ages 10-30 years of age completed a go/nogo task with social and non-social cues. To assess age effects, linear and quadratic models were used. Consistent with prior studies, typically developing adolescents and young adults demonstrated more false alarms for positive relative to neutral social cues. In autism, there were no changes in attention across age for social or non-social cues. Findings suggest reduced orienting to motivating cues during late adolescence and early adulthood in autism. The findings provide a unique perspective to explain the challenges for adolescents with autism transitioning to adulthood.

It is often claimed that the one-teacher, one-room, non-formal school model is more effective than the formal school in enrolling hard-to-reach children. This model is, however, not immune to the two-fold challenges of primary completion and transition. This article draws on data from three rounds of surveys with children from "Tsangaya" (traditional Quranic schools) in northern Nigeria who took part in a non-formal school programme. The article records project success in attracting children from "Tsangaya" schools and enabling them to complete the primary cycle. It shows that students' innate abilities and mother's education and income-generation ability seem to have a bearing on retention in primary school, while quality of teaching has an association with primary completion. However, it records major challenges to the transition to secondary school and argues for recognising the distinct challenges to primary completion and to transition from primary to secondary education.

Research suggests a link between precocious transitions to adulthood (e.g., high school dropout) and maladaptation, and this association is typically assumed to be uniform. We propose that this monolithic portrayal of precocious transitions as problematic for adult functioning is unwarranted, particularly across identities defined by gender, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status (SES). Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, we use propensity score methodology to demonstrate that the effects of precocious transitions on adult antisocial behavior vary. Results indicate a general null effect of experiencing any precocious transition among low SES subgroups regardless of gender and race/ethnicity and criminogenic effects among more economically privileged subgroups, with the exception of Hispanic females. Additional analyses reveal that the effect of individual transitions further vary in significance across social identities, displaying a criminogenic effect among some subgroups and a null/protective effect among others. Implications for theory and future research are discussed.

This longitudinal study aimed to survey over a 12-month period, the mental health and wellbeing of new incoming students transitioning to a boys' only boarding school. An online self-report questionnaire was used to investigate the perceptions and pre-transition experience of new incoming Year 7 students (e.g., while still in Year 6) prior to their impending transition to Secondary School (Time 1), at the end of Term 1 first year of secondary school (Time 2), and at the end of Term 3 (Time 3) first year of secondary school. All day students enrolled to begin secondary school were also invited to participate. Findings suggest that transition support efforts by the school (e.g. The Connect Programme) were successful in minimising the differences in factors associated with academic, emotional and mental wellbeing between boarding and non-boarding students at three months and six months post-transition. Mental health and wellbeing in terms of the internal, home, school and community protective resilience factors, stayed at similar levels for both boarding and non-boarding students over the first year in secondary school. Academic motivation and self-regulation were found to be higher than normative values but significantly decreased for all students after starting secondary school. Conversely, internalising (e.g. emotional problems) and externalising problems (e.g. conduct problems) increased over time for boarding students. These findings are discussed in terms of transition and the boarding school context. Strengths and limitations of this study are presented.

Transitions from one level of education system to another and from education to work are structured by socio-economic and institutional structure factors, while at the same time they are appropriated by individuals in their biographical constructions. Patterns to career trajectories are also dependent on social class, immigrant origin and level of academic achievement. This paper elaborates the ways young people are envisioning their post-comprehensive trajectories in Finland. Based on an analysis of qualitative interview data (n = 113) with immigrant- and Finnish-origin youths in the final year of their comprehensive education (ninth grade), patterns of envisioned educational trajectories are identified and the reasoning behind them recognised. The analysis introduces six possible envisioned educational trajectories, based on combinations of envisioned educational choices and occupational destinations. They portray the multiple relational aspects and intertwining processes of the decision-making processes, but also underline the nature of them as self-made reasonings of skills, stress, friends, life management and aspirations. Study guidance and counselling should support the decision-making processes as a part of the holistic life-design process.
