LIMITED English-proficient students ,STORIES without words ,TEACHER effectiveness ,LANGUAGE ability ,LANGUAGE & languages - Abstract
Teaching literacy skills that require critical reading and linguistic output can feel like an insurmountable challenge when presented with students of varying language proficiencies. One valuable but often unused tool to surmount these challenges is wordless picture books (WPBs). WPBs can be used to develop literacy skills more equitably among learners with varying language proficiencies, even when in class with native‐speaking peers. They transcend language and cultural barriers often found in traditional literature and can be a tool for exploring multicultural perspectives. However, WPBs are often underrated and misunderstood by teachers and students, and frequently relegated to classrooms with young, pre‐emergent readers. We argue for the power of WPBs for literacy development among English learners (ELs) of all ages by addressing common misconceptions, highlighting unique benefits of WPBs to ELs, and suggesting practical pedagogical implications. STORIES without words , *READING , *CHILDREN'S language , *EARLY childhood education , *PARTICIPANT observation - Abstract
While the association between shared book reading (SBR) and child language development is well documented, there has been less focus on how book characteristics may differentially elicit parents' language input and hence differentially relate to children's language skills during this activity. Moreover, despite the positive and unique role that fathers have been shown to play for children's language, the father‐child SBR evidence base is small. Accordingly, the present study examined variation in father and child language quantity, quality, complexity, and function during SBR with text‐based and wordless picture books and explored associations between fathers' language and children's language during these episodes. Participants were 46 father‐child dyads (20 females). Fathers' mean age was 38.74 years (SD = 5.74), and children's mean age was 37.89 months (SD = 2.71). Findings indicate that fathers in the text‐book condition produced significantly greater language quality, extended the topic more, and produced more conversational utterances but described and labeled pictures less than fathers in the wordless picture book condition. Fathers' language during both SBR episodes showed differential links with child's language and may suggest that fathers were fine‐tuning their language in accordance with their child's language skills (effect sizes ranged from r =.45 to r =.78). It is possible that variation in book content may encourage different types of learning with distinct effects on different domains of child language. Should future research replicate such differential relations, findings may inform caretakers and early childhood interventions with the aim of promoting children's books tailored to specific language areas of interest. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
From the creator of the Ezra Jack Keats Honor-winning picture book Every Little Kindness, this powerful and positive wordless story explores the all-important theme of forgiveness. When a young boy's beloved bird flies away, the only thing harder than tracking it down is forgiving the friend who let it escape. As he searches the town from sidewalk to treetop, what he finds instead of his lost pet is that people make mistakes all the time. But it might take his own mistake to discover the truth: even when all seems lost, forgiveness is a gift that comes back to you. Told entirely in wordless illustrations with pops of color for every moment of forgiveness, this simple yet powerful story can be enjoyed by young readers, families, classmates, and friends. For anyone who has had a fight or experienced conflict with someone they care about—something we all go through—this gentle picture book shares comfort and timeless wisdom.WHY FORGIVENESS MATTERS: Apologies are hard to give, and forgiveness is even harder, but each genuine moment of sincerity can soothe hurt feelings. This heartwarming book demonstrates that unintentional mistakes are a part of everyday life and that choosing to forgive is a form of kindness. TEACHING VALUES: Created by award-winning Slovenian artist Marta Bartolj, this universal story furthers the message in her debut book, Every Little Kindness. It demonstrates how to build on kind acts by pairing a sincere apology with genuine forgiveness. “A beautifully illustrated story about one of the most challenging human experiences—learning that forgiveness is the kindest act of all. No words needed.” —Alison Oliver, author-illustrator “This book is a silent journey that follows one boy and his tiny bird as they discover a big new understanding.” —Cynthia Alonso, author-illustratorPerfect for: Parents and caretakers looking for books about forgiveness Classroom book for teachers and educators Anyone looking for a sweet, heartwarming children's book Fans of wordless picture books Readers of Every Little Kindness, Heartstring, Enemy Pie, and How to Apologize

★“A very wise book, speaking volumes…Share this at story hours, or hand it to the child struggling to read; this communicates essential truths without a word. Marvelous.”—School Library Journal, starred review ★“This sweet, understated story is wordless—a perfect way to tell it, as it requires youngsters to relate to the illustrations in a unique, profoundly personal way…Refreshing, beautiful, moving, and meaningful.”—Kirkus Reviews, starred review ★“With cinematic fluidity, Dion's marvellous watercolor, gouache, and digital illustrations evocatively convey Singh's thoughtful wordless narrative…This multilayered wordless picture book has much to say about nature, renewal, and resiliency.”—Booklist, starred review Once, as the winter ended, a little bird emerged to find the world had gone quiet. The streets were empty and the playgrounds still. Puzzled but determined, the bird explores the town in search of a suitable place to nest. The residents of an apartment building notice her resting in a tree outside and take comfort in her song. Watching through their windows, they look beyond their lives and pause to appreciate the wonders of nature. The bird chooses to make this community her home and builds a nest, an act of resilience and hope that inspires the humans to emerge as well, reminding them that natural rhythms continue, seasons change and life goes on. Once again. This wordless picture book is a hopeful contemplation of our interconnectedness with the natural world and the joy that nature brings us, even in unusual times. The sun is out and the birds are chirping. It's a beautiful day for Saya, her dad and her well-loved stuffed bunny, Kunoichi, to go to the park. On their way, Saya stealthily stops a fight by flinging her floppy four-legged ninja-bunny between two snarling cats. Later on, on the bus, Saya throws Kunoichi under the wheels of a child's stroller, halting its dangerous roll toward the stairs. Dad doesn't notice as Saya uses Kunoichi to save the day time and time again on their outing and on the bus home, proving small actions can have a great impact. Designed for a color e-reader with a touch screen. My Big Wimmelbooks let kids ages 2 to 5 be the storytellers with hours of seek-and-find hands-on learning—and fun! In these one-of-a-kind picture books, every page is bursting with life—and tons to discover! Children as young as age 2 have a blast pointing out recognizable things—a blue tricycle, a hungry dog, a piggyback ride—while older kids can follow the star characters from page to page, telling their stories along the way. How? Wimmelbooks are virtually instruction-free, inviting kids to make their own way through the busy Wimmelworld they encounter, and to craft their own stories. First, you're introduced to a unique cast of characters who are hidden in plain sight on the pages that follow. As you seek them out, each character's storyline unfolds, but it's up to kids to interpret the scenes and create stories they think fit. It's hours upon hours of fun—and an effortless introduction to literacy to boot. Please use pan and zoom to explore the illustrations.About Wimmelbooks Wimmelbooks originated in Germany decades ago and have become a worldwide sensation with children (and adults!) everywhere. My Big Wimmelbooks is the first-ever Wimmelbook series to feature Wimmelbooks as Wimmelbooks in English. They've been praised as “lively... and abounding with humor and detail” (WSJ), likely to “make any parent's heart sing.” (NYT)

Thunderstorm follows the course of a storm through midwestern farm country minute-by-minute, hour-by-hour, from late morning into late afternoon. As always with Arthur Geisert, it is a meticulously executed and visually stunning piece of work. Other than the timeline that runs along the bottom border of the illustrations, there is no text, and the illustrations are continuous.Through keen observation, Geisert beautifully captures the nuances and details of a midwestern thunderstorm, from the ever-changing color of the sky, to the actions of the human inhabitants, to the reactions of the natural world to the wind and rain. America's heartland is somewhat unfamiliar territory in the realm of picture books, but in Thunderstorm, Geisert has provided readers with valuable, breathtaking insight into one of its most natural occurrences.Arthur Geisert grew up in Los Angeles, California, and claims not to have seen a pig until he was an adult. Trained as a sculptor in college, Geisert learned to etch at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles. Geisert has published just about a book a year for the past thirty years. Every one of his books has been illustrated with etchings. His work has appeared in The New Yorker and The Horn Book Magazine. In 2010 his book Ice was selected as a New York Times Book Review Best Illustrated book of the year. Geisert currently lives in a converted bank building in Bernard, Iowa.

Because of their simplicity, the books can support children as they move from simple to intermediate sentence levels, as well as encouraging them to consider additional elements of language such as cause and effect, sequencing and inference. This resource includes: Ten beautifully illustrated picture books, each following a simple pattern of routine, disruption and resolution An accompanying guidebook including story scripts, cue questions and prompts for using the resource to support additional skills Although developed specifically to help children with speech, language and communication needs, this set is suitable for any child who requires support and practice in developing their speech. It is an invaluable resource for speech and language therapists, teaching staff and caregivers.

STORIES without words , *SCHOOL children - Abstract
This article explores 11-year-old children's connections to prior knowledge and experiences while reading a wordless version of Little Red Riding Hood. The study extends pre-existing research on reader response theories by focusing on images instead of written text. The approach taken places emphasis on the reader's active engagement, for readers use visual decoding skills and culturally oriented knowledge in an effort to interpret the wordless story and fill its gaps. A multiple case study design was implemented involving sixteen students from Greece and England, all being in the final year of primary school and identified as fluent readers. The participants in each country, separated into two groups of four, read the book in an empty classroom, with no teacher intervention. The aim was to identify patterns in their unmediated responses, and to present and analyse the themes of their connections based on empirical evidence. The participants linked the illustrations to their common general knowledge, including cultural references and gender-based generalisations, to personal experiences, and to other texts such as books and films. The findings reveal the prevalence of common themes in their interpretations of the story and encourage engagement with wordless picturebooks, even for older students. Due to their special nature and complexity, these books can initiate interesting conversations on issues such as identity and gender diversity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
