Purpose: To evaluate the contribution of splenius capitis, sternocleidomastoid, and upper fibers of trapezius activation to the gains in rate of force development (RFD) of the head and neck during maximum voluntary ballistic contractions. Methods: RFD gain was facilitated by a single-session intervention for maximum voluntary ballistic contractions in the anterior direction, oriented at 45° to the midsagittal plane, which require active restraint of axial rotation. Muscle activation for the agonist (sternocleidomastoid) and 2 antagonists (splenius capitis and upper fibers of trapezius) was evaluated. The study sample included 12 physically active men (mean age, 22.6 y). RFD (N·m·s−1; 0–100 ms) and integrated muscle activity (50 ms before and 100 ms after force onset) were measured at 10 minutes, 20 minutes, and 2 days postintervention, relative to baseline. Muscle activation predictive of RFD gains was evaluated by linear regression analysis. RFD reproducibility was evaluated using the coefficient of variation of the typical error. Results: The intervention yielded a 1.95- to 2.39-fold RFD gain (P ≤.05), with greater RFD gain for participants with a lower peak moment of force (<10.9 N·m) than those with a higher peak moment (≥10.9 N·m) at baseline (P ≤.002). For the low group, 65% to 74% of the RFD gain was predicted by ipsilateral sternocleidomastoid activation, with ipsilateral splenius capitis activation predicting 77% to 92% of RFD gain for the high group. Absolute peak and impulse of static force were greater for the high than for the low group (P ≤.04). RFD reproducibility was high (coefficient of variation of the typical error ≤ 14.4%). Background: Occipital nerve blocks are essential in diagnosing and treating headache disorders such as migraine, cervicogenic headache, occipital neuralgia, and cluster headache. In this study, we aimed to investigate the potential compression points of the greater occipital nerve (GON), third occipital nerve (TON), and lesser occipital nerve (LON) which are targeted to block in occipital nerve blocks and to develop a method to detect these points easily. Methods: To identify potential compression points of the GON, TON, and LON, we dissected 43, 41, and 26 cadavers, respectively. A rigid, transparent tool divided into 1 × 1 cm sections was placed on the external occipital protuberance to measure the determined points. The cadaveric head was viewed from above, vertically, and the coordinates corresponding to each point were noted separately. Results: Six, four, and one potential entrapment points were detected for the GON, TON, and LON, respectively. The distances of the point where the GON arose from the lower border of the obliquus capitis inferior muscle and the emerging point of the TON from the C2-C3 vertebrae to the posterior midline were statistically significant in terms of the sides (p = 0.040). Similarly, there was a statistical significance between genders for the distance of the point where the LON arose from the posterior edge of the sternocleidomastoid muscle to the posterior midline (p = 0.002). Conclusions: We believe that with the method developed, the GON, TON, and LON compression points can be easily localized and blocked in diagnosing and treating patients experiencing headaches such as migraines, cervicogenic headaches, occipital neuralgia, and cluster headache. Background: Temporomandibular joint has biomechanical and neurological interactions with cervical region in a complex functioning that is addressed as cranio-cervical mandibular system. Subjects and methods: In a prospective cohort study of 67 patients, their mean age 24.3 ± 5.6 years of both genders with temporomandibular disorder "bruxism," patients had fulfilled a questionnaire regarding bruxism manifestations. Pain pressure algometer was used to assess pain pressure threshold for trigger point in masseter, temporalis, sternocleidomastoid, and trapezius, and bubble inclinometer was used to assess cervical proprioception for all cervical ranges. Results: There was a statistical significant indirect weak correlation between proprioception error of cervical flexion and pain pressure threshold of masseter (r = − 0.333) (p = 0.006), between proprioception error of cervical flexion and pain pressure threshold of trapezius (r = − 0.363) (p = 0.003), and also between proprioception error of cervical left-side bending and pain pressure threshold of trapezius (r − 0.298; p 0.014), while there was significant direct weak correlation between proprioception error of cervical left rotation and cervical bending to left (r 0.315; p 0.009), where the p-value was < 0.05. Conclusion: The study proved that temporomandibular joint pain was correlated with impaired neck proprioception in whom with bruxism. Trial registration: NCT05657353. Branchial cleft cysts are considered one of the most common cystic lesions in neck and are commonly seen in pediatric age group and young adulthood with most of the cases presenting within second and third decade. Here we intend to discuss a case of a 43 year old male who presented with a very short history of a painful lateral neck mass and was clinico-radiologically suggested as either myositis and abscess of sternocleidomastoid muscle or necrotic/cystic lymphadenopathy. An ultrasound guided needle aspiration cytology did not show any microorganism thus an excisional biopsy of the mass was done suspecting it to be lymph nodal mass. However the histopatholgical examination confirmed it to be an inflamed branchial cyst. Thus we would like to highlight the importance of keeping branchial cleft cysts as a possible differential while managing lateral neck masses of any duration in adults as well as in children. Prolonged smartphone usage may cause discomfort in the thumb, shoulder, and neck that can be exacerbated over time, thereby affecting the electrical activity of several muscles, such as the sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM). Accordingly, we aimed to examine the impact of smartphone addiction on the myoelectric activity of the SCM. Design and method: Forty-four smartphone users, both male and female, aged 18–30 years, were recruited from the Faculty of Physical Therapy, Cairo University, in this observational study. The participants were equally allocated into two groups, A and B, based on their Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version (SAS-SV) scores. Group A consisted of smartphone-non-addicted users who scored below 31 for males and 33 for females, whereas group B included smartphone-addicted users who scored over 31 for men and 33 for females. Additionally, the electromyography (EMG) device was used to monitor the electrical activity during rest and maximum voluntary contraction (MVC). Results: The results showed a significant difference (P < 0.0001) in the electrical activity of the left and right SCMs between the two groups at rest but a nonsignificant difference during MVC. Conclusion: Smartphone addiction significantly impacts the myoelectric activity of the SCM at rest among young adult smartphone users, but this impact is not significant during MVC. A 54-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital with a left neck mass. Enhanced CT and ultrasound examinations revealed a lesion in the left sternocleidomastoid muscle. The patient undergone right thyroid lobe resection 8 years ago. Interestingly, the lesion on the sternocleidomastoid muscle, along with the left lobe of the patient's thyroid, visually appears to form a displaced and complete thyroid in the early Tc-99m-MIBI parathyroid scintigraphy. Combined with Tc-99m-MIBI scintigraphy and abnormal PTH and blood calcium levels, the consideration was given to the lesion in the sternocleidomastoid muscle as an ectopic parathyroid adenoma. Postoperative hypocalcemia incidence range after thyroid surgery from 1-2% to 61.9%. Such a wide oscillation of values in literature cannot fail to raise doubts about the method of detection and the composition of the different experiences. We here refer to the personal experience gained over the course of 3 years from January 2020 to December 2022; 320 consecutive thyroid surgeries: 79 M, 241 F, mean 49.11 Amino Acid (AA), 59 near total thyroidectomies, 213 total thyroidectomies, 48 recurrence interventions of which 18 for neoplastic pathology with central or later-cervical emptying performed in 258 cases for benign pathology and in 62 cases for cancer. In a smaller group of 50 cases of low parathyroid vascularization after dissection, we selected 12 cases of absolutely no color signal of parathyroid vascularization at early and late acquisition and in those cases, we proceeded to a homolateral sternocleidomastoid muscle implant. The entire sample of 320 patients can therefore be subdivided, according to the extent of the demolition, to the method of opotherapy substitution with L-Thyroxine and to Parathyroid ICGA (Indo-Cyanine Green Angiography) in 4 groups: I group 59 patients near total thyroidectomy; II group 155 total thyroidectomies with L-Thyroxine from 15th-30th Parathyroidectomy (PO) day; III group 94 patients total thyroidectomy with L-Thyroxine from the first PO day and finally IV group 12 patients total thyroidectomy with a muscle parathyroid implant. In the first group the incidence of early hypocalcemia was 5 cases, equal to 8.47%, the incidence of protracted hypocalcemia was 0 cases, equal to 0%. In the second group the incidence of early hypocalcemia was 33 cases, equal to 21.29%, the incidence of protracted hypocalcemia was 7 cases, equal to 4.51%. In the third group (94 cases) the overall incidence of hypocalcemia was practically nil, with only 2 cases of early hypocalcemia, equal to 2.12% and no case of protracted hypocalcemia. In the fourth group the incidence of hypocalcemia is 1 case of early hypocalcemia 12.0% and no case of protracted hypocalcemia. We suggest that Parathyroidectomy (PO) hypoparathyroidism doesn't look to be influenced by total or near total thyroidectomy and that an early thyroid hormonal replacement therapy should be started, whenever possible, post total thyroidectomy. The surgical muscle implant of a completely devascularized parathyroid gland approach is certainly an interesting method, not without limits and criticisms, in an attempt to limit the iatrogenic impact in the determinism of post-thyroidectomy hypocalcemia. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of a head/neck supporting exoskeleton (HNSE) on the electromyographic fatigue threshold (EMGFT) of the neck and shoulder muscles during a simulated overhead work task. Background: Overhead work is a well-known risk factor for neck and shoulder musculoskeletal disorders due to the excessive strain imposed on the muscles and joints in these regions. Method: Fourteen healthy males performed a repetitive overhead nut fastening/unfastening task to exhaustion while wearing and not wearing the HNSE at two neck extension angles (40% and 80% of neck maximum range of motion). Electromyographic signals were continuously recorded from the right and left sternocleidomastoid (SCMR, SCML), splenius capitis (SCR, SCL), upper trapezius (UTR, UTL), and anterior deltoid (ADR, ADL) muscles. The normalized electromyographic amplitude (nEMG) data was time normalized, and a bisegmental linear regression was applied to determine the muscle fatigue break point. Results: The results showed a significant increase in fatigue threshold time in the SCMR (p <.001), SCML (p =.002), and UTR (p =.037) muscles when the HNSE was used. However, the EMGFT times for the right and left deltoid and left trapezius muscles showed a nonsignificant reduction due to the head/neck support exoskeleton use. In addition, the neck extension angle did not reveal a significant effect on muscles' EMGFT time. Conclusion: Overall, the findings confirmed a significant delay in fatigue onset in sternocleidomastoid muscles, as measured by the electromyographic fatigue threshold. This finding suggests that the HNSE can be an effective ergonomic intervention for reducing the risk of musculoskeletal disorders in overhead workers. However, further studies are needed to investigate the effect of the HNSE at other neck extension angles and more realistic tasks to ensure the generalizability of our results. Application: The present findings emphasize the application of the fatigue onset time to evaluate the effectiveness of ergonomic interventions, including exoskeletons, which can subsequently be utilized to alleviate postural demands and reduce the risk of musculoskeletal disorders. Background: The endoscopic surgery for persistent muscular torticollis has been well-described and most are subcutaneous working caverns. As the sternocleidomastoid muscle is located beneath the deep cervical fascia that corresponds to the pectoral fascia, this study aimed to review our results of the transaxillary approach under the pectoral fascia and the deep cervical fascia. Methods: Between November 2009 and January 2022, pediatric patients with persistent muscular torticollis receiving transaxillary endoscopic subfascial operation were retrospectively reviewed and analyzed. Results: There were thirty-three consecutive patients with median age of 6.5 years (range, 5.5 months–15.7 years). The median operating time was 90.0 min. With a median follow-up of 14.8 months (range, 5.0–127.7), the final outcomes showed excellent-to-good results in 90.9%, fair results in 6.1%, and poor results in 3.0%. Univariate analysis revealed that the long-term outcomes of the operation were independent of gender, age, involved side and previously open myotomy (p = 0.662, 0.818, 0.740 and 0.596, respectively). Conclusions: The subfascial working cavern would be technically achievable for the transaxillary endoscopic approach with good functional and cosmetic outcomes.

Forward head posture (FHP) is a common postural problem experienced by most people. However, its effect on brain activity is still unknown. Accordingly, we aimed to observe changes in brain waves at rest to determine the effect of FHP on the nervous systems. A total of 33 computer users (Male = 17; Female = 16; age = 22.18 ± 1.88) were examined in both FHP and neutral posture. For each session, brain waves were measured for 5 min, and then muscle mechanical properties and cranio-vertebral angle (CVA) were measured. Changes in brain waves between the neutral posture and FHP were prominent in gamma waves. A notable increase was confirmed in the frontal and parietal lobes. That is, eight channels in the frontal lobe and all channels in the parietal lobe showed a significant increase in FHP compared to neutral posture. Additionally, FHP changes were associated with a decrease in CVA (p < 0.001), an increase in levator scapulae tone (Right, p = 0.014; Left, p = 0.001), and an increase in right sternocleidomastoid stiffness (p = 0.002), and a decrease in platysma elasticity (Right, p = 0.039; Left, p = 0.017). The change in CVA was found to have a negative correlation with the gamma activity (P7, p = 0.044; P8, p = 0.004). Therefore, increased gamma wave activity in FHP appears to be related to CVA decrease due to external force that was applied to the nervous system and cervical spine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Intramuscular lipomas, typically found in subcutaneous tissue, rarely affect deeper muscular planes, especially those of the head and neck region. The following are 3 cases of intramuscular lipomas involving the sternocleidomastoid muscle. The first 2 patients presented with painless, palpable masses confirmed by diagnostic imaging as well-circumscribed intramuscular lipomas. One was treated surgically, while the other was managed conservatively with monitoring and close follow-up. The third patient reported dysphagia associated with occasional dyspnea and mild pain. The mass was identified as infiltrative lipoma and was resected surgically. Complete tumor removal with no recurrence at 6 months was observed for the first and last cases. The second case was serially followed at 3 and 6 months with no interval changes. We report the largest case series on intramuscular lipomas of the sternocleidomastoid muscle to enhance our understanding of this rare entity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Direct surgery is an important option to treat vertebral artery (VA) stenosis. Method: A patient with symptomatic stenosis at the origin of the right VA underwent transposition of the right VA to the common carotid artery (CCA). Using the sternocleidomastoid sparing approach, the VA was anastomosed to the posterior wall of the CCA by twisting the CCA to expose its posterior wall to face the operative field. Conclusion: This approach, consisting of securing the proximal VA and then following it to its distal end, not only preserves the sternocleidomastoid muscle but also protects the sympathetic chains and thoracic duct. Purpose: The aim of this study is to define the intramuscular nerve distribution of the sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM) and the innervation zones (IZ) to describe the optimal botulinum toxin injection sites. Methods: The cricoid cartilage (CC), laryngeal prominence (LP) and hyoid bone (HB) and angle of mandible (AM) were determined as landmarks. The length of the muscles were measured between the sternoclavicular joint and tip of the mastoid process. SCM was evaluated in two parts as anterior and posterior divided by the line where the length of the muscle was measured. Measurements were made to define the relationships of the SCM with common carotid artery, internal and external jugular veins. IZ were described according to these vessels. Afterwards, Modified Sihler's staining technique was applied to expose the intramuscular nerve distribution. Results: The average length of SCM was 160,1 mm. Motor entry point of the accessory nerve fibers were between the AM-HB lines, in the range of 30–40% of the muscle length, and in the posterior part of the muscles. IZ were between the HB-CC lines in the anterior and posterior part. When this interval was examined according to the vessels, the optimal injection sites were between the LP-CC lines. Conclusions: This study shows the position of the intramuscular nerve fibers endings of the SCM according to the chosen landmarks and the relationship of the IZ with the vessels to prevent complications. BACKGROUND: Smartphone usage has increased rapidly in the last decade due to rapid technological advancements. This extensive usage of smartphones led to physiological problems and musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) due to inappropriate postures. OBJECTIVE: Past studies have reported the effects/discomfort of smartphone usage for short periods, ranging from 3–20 min, which does not represent the current era of smartphone dependency (approximately 7-hr/day). METHODS: This study was performed on fifty-four participants aged 20–28 with 1-hr smartphone texting in a sitting posture. Flexion angles, both sides (dominant and non-dominant) muscle activity (maximum voluntary contraction %) at sternocleidomastoid (SCM), upper-trapezius (TRP), extensor digitorum (EDM) and abductor pollicis brevis (APB) muscles, and subjective discomfort were analyzed. RESULTS: After 1-hr smartphone texting, the muscle activity at eight upper extremities: SCM (24.80%), TRP (29.45%), EDM (14.44%) and APB (19.87%) significantly (p < 0.001) increased by 1.5–1.9 times with 27.4±3.18° and 82.94±7.03° head and lower-arm flexion angles, respectively. The mechanical loads on the cervical spine increased by 4.6 times, and subjective discomfort by 3 times. CONCLUSION: Maintaining the same posture for a long duration causes postural stress, muscular imbalances, and discomfort, leading to MSD with increased cervical intervertebral disc pressure. Teachers usually present work-related pain such as neck pain. Their posture could be the cause of these problems; indeed, it is often a sway-back posture. Furthermore, teachers can also experience problems with their voice such as dysphonia, specifically muscle tension dysphonia (MTD). This scoping review aims to find the correlation between teachers' posture and MTD. It also studies how a posture-based treatment can influence this disorder. Randomized controlled trials, controlled clinical trials, prospective cohort studies, and cross-sectional studies that considered the relationship between posture and MTD and that included teachers in their sample. The search led to an initial number of 396 articles; after the screening process, a final number of eight articles were included. A total of 303 patients were analyzed and all showed altered alignment of the head around the cervical spine with hypertonus of the cricothyroid, suprahyoid, and sternocleidomastoid muscles. Although MTD is a disorder with a multifactorial etiology, the articles revealed a correlation between posture and MTD related to a forward protraction of the cervical spine with a hypertonus of the laryngeal and hyoid musculature. Currently, there is no consensus on the characterization of the human voice. The objective of the present study is to describe the myoelectric behavior of the extrinsic musculature of the larynx in 146 people with normal voice (Spanish speakers), aged between 20 and 50 years old. Different vocal tasks were recorded using a surface electromyograph (SEMG). In all vocal tasks, it was observed that women had higher activation (µV) in the suprahyoid and sternocleidomastoid muscles than men, while men had higher activation in the infrahyoid muscles. SEMG is a valid procedure to help define normal vocal characteristics in the studied population, providing reference values during clinical examination. However, it is necessary to adopt a universal system of assessment tasks and standardized measurement techniques to allow for comparisons with future studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper explores the role of botulinum neurotoxin in aiding fracture recovery through temporary muscle paralysis. Specifically, it investigates the effects of botulinum neurotoxin-induced paralysis of the sternocleidomastoid muscle on clavicle fractures in rats. The research aims to assess safety, effectiveness, and the impact on fracture healing. Healthy male Albino Wistar rats were divided into four groups: clavicle fracture, botulinum neurotoxin injection, both, and control. Surgeries were conducted under anaesthesia, and postoperatively, animals were monitored for 28 days. Euthanasia and radiological assessment followed, examining fracture healing and muscle changes, while tissues were histopathologically evaluated. The modified Lane–Sandhu scoring system was used for the radiographic evaluation of clavicle fractures, and the results varied from complete healing to nonunion. Histopathological examination at 28 days postfracture showed fibrous tissue, mesenchymal cells, and primary callus formation in all groups. Despite varied callus compositions, botulinum neurotoxin administration did not affect clavicle healing, as evidenced by similar scores to the control group. Several studies have explored botulinum neurotoxin applications in fracture recovery. Research suggests its potential to enhance functional recovery in certain types of fractures. Theoretical benefits include managing muscle spasticity, aiding reduction techniques, and preventing nonunion. However, botulinum neurotoxin's transient effect and nonuniversal applications should be considered. The present study found that botulinum toxin had no clear superiority in healing compared to controls, while histological evaluation showed potential adverse effects on muscle tissue. Background: Failed extubation increases the intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay, hospital length of stay, and financial costs and it reduces the patient's functional ability. Avoiding failed extubation is of utmost importance, therefore predictors for successful extubation are paramount. Objective: To determine if successful extubation in mechanically ventilated patients can be predicted by physiotherapists using upper limb muscle strength and exercise endurance. Methods: Fifty-seven patients from the medical and trauma ICUs of a large academic hospital were eligible for testing. Muscle strength was evaluated using the Oxford grading scale, Medical Research Council score (MRC score), handgrip dynamometer, and maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP). Exercise endurance was tested while the patient was actively riding the MOTOmed® letto2 cycle ergometer for six minutes with the upper limbs. Results: Exercise endurance (time the patient rode actively) (P = 0.005), MRC-score (P = 0.007), and number of days ventilated (P = 0.005) were associated with successful extubation. The handgrip strength (P = 0.061), MIP (P = 0.095), and muscle strength of the sternocleidomastoid (P = 0.053) and trapezius muscles (P = 0.075) were marginally associated with successful extubation. Due to multicollinearity when developing the prediction equation, the final multivariable logistic regression prediction model included only exercise endurance and the number of days ventilated. The newly developed prediction equation conferred a sensitivity of 81.82% and a specificity of 77.14% to predict successful extubation. Conclusion: Successful extubation of mechanically ventilated patients can be predicted by physiotherapists using the newly developed prediction equation consisting of exercise endurance and number of days ventilated. Monitoring of ingestive activities is critically important for managing the health and wellness of individuals with various health conditions, including the elderly, diabetics, and individuals seeking better weight control. Monitoring swallowing events can be an ideal surrogate for developing streamlined methods for effective monitoring and quantification of eating or drinking events. Swallowing is an essential process for maintaining life. This seemingly simple process is the result of coordinated actions of several muscles and nerves in a complex fashion. In this study, we introduce automated methods for the detection and quantification of various eating and drinking activities. Wireless surface electromyography (sEMG) was used to detect chewing and swallowing from sEMG signals obtained from the sternocleidomastoid muscle, in addition to signals obtained from a wrist-mounted IMU sensor. A total of 4675 swallows were collected from 55 participants in the study. Multiple methods were employed to estimate bolus volumes in the case of fluid intake, including regression and classification models. Among the tested models, neural networks-based regression achieved an R2 of 0.88 and a root mean squared error of 0.2 (minimum bolus volume was 10 ml). Convolutional neural networks-based classification (when considering each bolus volume as a separate class) achieved an accuracy of over 99% using random cross-validation and around 66% using cross-subject validation. Multiple classification methods were also used for solid bolus type detection, including SVM and decision trees (DT), which achieved an accuracy above 99% with random validation and above 94% in cross-subject validation. Finally, regression models with both random and cross-subject validation were used for estimating the solid bolus volume with an R2 value that approached 1 and root mean squared error values as low as 0.00037 (minimum solid bolus weight was 3 gm). These reported results lay the foundation for a cost-effective and non-invasive method for monitoring swallowing activities which can be extremely beneficial in managing various chronic health conditions, such as diabetes and obesity. To describe, according to the CARE guidelines, an easily reproducible technique using two local muscle flaps to reduce the unsightly retromandibular hollow left by total parotidectomy for cancer. A 40-year-old Caucasian male with T3N1M0 temporal skin melanoma was managed by skin resection, conservative total parotidectomy and ipsilateral level II–IV selective lymph-node dissection. Two rotational muscle flaps were taken from the ipsilateral posterior belly of the digastric and sternocleidomastoid muscles. Postoperative course was uneventful, with 3 days' hospital stay, without facial or spinal palsy. At 3 days, 3 months and 9 months postoperatively, the appearance of the parotid region was similar to the non-operated contralateral region. Easy to perform and without associated scars, the approach described here should be included in the armamentarium available to the head and neck surgeon to avoid an unsightly hollow after total parotidectomy for cancer, in an effort to improve quality of life. A novel technique for tracheoesophageal puncture (TEP) closure is described in which the sternohyoid muscles are rotated and interposed between the tracheal and esophageal walls. The results of this technique are reported, following CARE guidelines, and compared with those obtained using the sternocleidomastoid flap. A literature review on the techniques previously described for TEP closure in irradiated patients is presented. The novel technique was performed in six patients in whom the infrahyoid muscles were preserved during total laryngectomy. All received adjuvant radiotherapy. Successful closure was achieved in three cases; in one case a small leak was noted after initial closure and was successfully managed with simple sutures; and the other two failures occurred in patients with diabetes. The sternocleidomastoid flap was performed in five patients (only one with previous radiation) and success was achieved in two patients. In another patient a micro-fistular orifice appeared six months after the operation. The sternohyoid muscles pose a low morbidity alternative to be considered in surgical TEP closure. Patient selection is a key factor to surgical success, and this technique should be reserved for small to moderate size fistulas and in the absence of multiple impaired wound healing conditions. The endoscopic surgery for persistent muscular torticollis has been well-described and most are subcutaneous working caverns. As the sternocleidomastoid muscle is located beneath the deep cervical fascia that corresponds to the pectoral fascia, this study aimed to review our results of the transaxillary approach under the pectoral fascia and the deep cervical fascia. Between November 2009 and January 2022, pediatric patients with persistent muscular torticollis receiving transaxillary endoscopic subfascial operation were retrospectively reviewed and analyzed. There were thirty-three consecutive patients with median age of 6.5 years (range, 5.5 months–15.7 years). The median operating time was 90.0 min. With a median follow-up of 14.8 months (range, 5.0–127.7), the final outcomes showed excellent-to-good results in 90.9%, fair results in 6.1%, and poor results in 3.0%. Univariate analysis revealed that the long-term outcomes of the operation were independent of gender, age, involved side and previously open myotomy (p = 0.662, 0.818, 0.740 and 0.596, respectively). The subfascial working cavern would be technically achievable for the transaxillary endoscopic approach with good functional and cosmetic outcomes. • The endoscopic approach is performed safely for release of the sternocleidomastoid fibrosis. • As the SCM muscle is located beneath the deep cervical fascia, subfascial endoscopic approach is more appropriate. • Without the wound on the neck, rehabilitation could be started almost immediately following the operation. Differential screening is a complex process in chronic pain conditions. There is significant uncertainty that surrounds the pathophysiology of many chronic pain syndromes that may lead to misdiagnosis and treatment failures. Such differential screening is even more challenging where there is regional overlapping from surrounding tissues. This case report chronicles the differential screening and treatment of a patient with sternocleidomastoid syndrome (SCMS) originally diagnosed as Eagle's syndrome (ES). A 55-year-old woman, referred to a physical therapist (PT) by an ear, nose and throat (ENT) physician with the diagnosis of ES. The patient complained of yearlong left-sided otalgia, blurred vision, excessive lacrimation, dysphagia, hyperesthesia on the left side of the face, unilateral temporal headaches, and both left mandibular and anterior neck pain. The PT examination revealed the patient did not exhibit hallmark findings for clinical confirmation of ES and instead demonstrated multiple signs consistent with SCMS. BACKGROUND: Maintaining correct posture and optimal spine function has become an important issue due to the increased use of computers and smartphones. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of a 4-week downhill treadmill exercise (DTWE) program on participants with thoracic kyphosis and forward head posture (FHP). METHODS: Twenty-eight male participants were randomly assigned to the DTWE (n = 14) or standard treadmill walking exercise (STWE) (n = 14) group. They performed 30-minute exercise three times a week for 4 weeks. The vertebral angle was measured using a three-dimensional (3D) motion analysis system. Surface electromyography (EMG) was performed to record muscle activity in the thoracic erector spinae (TES), sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM), and cervical erector spinae (CES). RESULTS: The DTWE group showed significant increases in the craniovertebral angle (CVA) and TES EMG activity and significant decreases in the thoracic kyphosis angle and SCM and CES EMG activity compared with those shown by the STWE group following the intervention (p < 0.05). However, lumbar lordosis or pelvic tilt angles did not differ significantly between the groups after the intervention (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: DTWE can be effective in reducing thoracic kyphosis and FHP without causing compensatory movements of the lumbar spine and pelvis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background/Aim: The parotid is the largest salivary gland and is located anteriorly to the sternocleidomastoid muscle and laterally to the ramus of the mandible. Neoplasms in this gland are relatively rare, with 80% being benign and 20% malignant, primarily represented by mucoepidermoid carcinoma. In the head and neck region, lymphoepithelial carcinoma (LEC) accounts for 0.4% of malignant salivary gland tumors. Case Report: A 35-year-old man with no previous comorbidities was admitted to a Head and Neck Surgery Specialty Service for a painless right cervical mass of uncertain growth. Extensive diagnostic investigation revealed involvement of the contralateral parotid, associated with systemic lymph node enlargement. Thus, adjuvant radiotherapy was decided by the treating team. Objectives. This study aimed to assess the effects of different magnification systems on the angular deviations of the neck and trunk and the muscle activities of the upper back and neck during preclinical cavity preparation. Methods. This was an experimental laboratory study, with the angular deviations from the neutral positions of the neck and trunk and the activities of the bilateral upper back (the descending and ascending trapezius) and neck (sternocleidomastoid) muscles as the dependent variables. The independent variables were the different magnification systems used (Simple, Galilean, and Keplerian loupes, with direct vision as the control) and prepared teeth (teeth 16, 26, 36, and 46). A dental mannequin phantom head with artificial resin teeth was used, and Class I cavity preparations for composite resin were performed on teeth 16, 26, 36, and 46 using a 1012 round diamond bur at low speed. To analyze the angular deviations, the postures adopted during the procedure were recorded using a tripod-mounted camera positioned to provide a lateral view of the operator. A trained researcher measured the angular deviations using the software entitled "Software for Postural Assessment"--SAPO (version 0.69). Bilateral muscle activity was assessed using surface electromyography. Descriptive statistical analysis was performed, and after verifying the assumptions of normality and homoscedasticity, two-way analysis of variance and the Tukey and Games-Howell post-hoc tests were used to compare the data (α=0.05). Results. The angular deviation from the neutral position of the neck was found to be significantly higher during cavity preparations performed with the naked eye and the Simple loupe, irrespective of the prepared tooth. With regard to tooth location, the angular deviation of the neck was significantly greater during cavity preparation on teeth 16 and 26, and the angular deviation of the trunk was significantly greater during cavity preparation on tooth 26, regardless of the magnification system used. There were significant differences in right sternocleidomastoid muscle activity between the Simple, Galilean, and Keplerian loupes, with activity being the lowest for the Galilean loupe (pD0:008). There were no significant differences in left sternocleidomastoid muscle activity between the loupes, regardless of the prepared tooth (p=0.077). The activities of the bilateral descending trapezius and the right ascending trapezius muscles were significantly lower when the Galilean loupe was used (p<0.010). Conclusion. These results suggest that the Galilean loupe resulted in lower muscle activity in the neck and back regions and that the Galilean and Keplerian loupes resulted in less angular deviations of the neck and trunk during cavity preparation. Objective: This study aimed to determine the precautions that can be taken to increase the reliability of the vestibular evoked myogenic potentials test without being affected by the asymmetry of the sternocleidomastoid muscle and the issues that should be considered in the interpretation of vestibular evoked myogenic potential results if these precautions are not taken. Method: Individuals with sternocleidomastoid muscle activity of less than 30 μV in cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential testing and an asymmetry ratio of more than 0.35 were excluded. In our study, individuals were divided into different groups according to sternocleidomastoid muscle asymetry. Results: A total of 53 individuals were included in the study. Intergroup comparisons were made to determine the effect of electromyogram scaling and filter use on amplitude asymmetry ratio according to sternocleidomastoid muscle asymmetry. Conclusion: Keeping the sternocleidomastoid muscle asymmetry not exceeding 10 μV maximises the reliability of cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials. Objective To demonstrate that a T2 periodically rotated overlapping parallel lines with enhanced reconstruction (PROPELLER) technique using deep learning reconstruction (DLR) will provide better image quality and decrease image noise. Methods From December 2020 to March 2021, 35 patients examined cervical spine MRI were included in this study. Four sets of images including fast spin echo (FSE), original PROPELLER, PROPELLER DLR50%, and DLR75% were quantitatively and qualitatively reviewed. We calculated the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the spinal cord and sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle and the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) of the spinal cord by applying region-of-interest at the spinal cord, SCM muscle, and background air. We evaluated image noise with regard to the spinal cord, SCM, and back muscles at each level from C2-3 to C6-7 in the 4 sets. Results At all disc levels, the mean SNR values for the spinal cord and SCM muscles were significantly higher in PROPELLER DLR50% and DLR75% compared to FSE and original PROPELLER images (P  < .0083). The mean CNR values of the spinal cord were significantly higher in PROPELLER DLR50% and DLR75% compared to FSE at the C3-4 and 4-5 levels and PROPELLER DLR75% compared to FSE at the C6-7 level (P  < .0083). Qualitative analysis of image noise on the spinal cord, SCM, and back muscles showed that PROPELLER DLR50% and PROPELLER DLR75% images showed a significant denoising effect compared to the FSE and original PROPELLER images. Conclusion The combination of PROPELLER and DLR improved image quality with a high SNR and CNR and reduced noise. Advances in knowledge Motion-insensitive imaging technique (PROPELLER) increased the image quality compared to conventional FSE images. Objective Glossopharyngeal nerve block is a useful interventional technique for pain management of the head and neck. It is performed with landmark techniques or ultrasound guidance. We propose a novel ultrasound-guided glossopharyngeal nerve block technique. Methods This new approach was performed in 3 patients in their twenties and thirties. A needle was inserted deeply under the stylohyoid muscle through the sternocleidomastoid muscle. Subsequently, an ultrasound-guided nerve block was performed with 1 mL of 1% xylocaine. The performance of our technique was evaluated with 2 tests: a cold sensitivity test and a gag reflex test. Results The effect of the nerve block was observed in the posterior third of the tongue on both sides, the tonsils, and the pharyngeal region. The effect lasted for approximately 1.5 hour. Motor efferent block was not observed. Conclusions We designated the technique as ultrasound-guided selective glossopharyngeal nerve block: posterior mandibular ramus approach. No complications occurred during the bilateral application. This novel approach can be performed at a very shallow position, compared with conventional methods. There is no damage to tissues other than the muscles, which reduces postoperative complications and patient distress. Although our technique requires further safety assessments and technical refinements, it could represent a simpler alternative to conventional methods in daily clinical practice. Background: Despite a considerable amount of literature on dual-energy CT (DECT) iodine uptake of the head and neck, the physiologic iodine uptake of this region has not been defined yet. This study aims to establish reference values for the iodine uptake of healthy organs to facilitate clinical application. Methods: Consecutive venous DECT scans of the head and neck were reviewed, and unremarkable exams were included (n = 617). A total of 35 region of interest measurements were performed in 16 anatomical regions. Iodine uptake was compared among different organs/tissues and subgroup analysis was performed (male (n = 403) vs. female (n = 214); young (n = 207) vs. middle-aged (n = 206) vs. old (n = 204); and normal weight (n = 314) vs. overweight (n = 196) vs. obese (n = 107)). Results: Overall mean iodine uptake values ranged between 0.5 and 9.4 mg/mL. Women showed higher iodine concentrations in the cervical vessels and higher uptake for the parotid gland, masseter muscle, submandibular glands, sublingual glands, palatine tonsils, tongue body, thyroid gland, and the sternocleidomastoid muscle than men (p ≤ 0.04). With increasing age, intravascular iodine concentrations increased as well as iodine uptake for cerebellum and thyroid gland, while values for the tongue and palatine tonsils were lower compared to younger subjects (p ≤ 0.03). Iodine concentrations for parotid glands and sternocleidomastoid muscles decreased with a higher BMI (p ≤ 0.004), while normal-weighted patients showed higher iodine values inside the jugular veins, other cervical glands, and tonsils versus patients with a higher BMI (p ≤ 0.04). Conclusion: physiologic iodine uptake values of cervical organs and tissues show gender-, age-, and BMI-related differences, which should be considered in the clinical routine of head and neck DECT. Objectives: Cervical chondrocutaneous branchial remnants (CCBRs) and dermal lesions, such as epidermoid cysts or brachial anomalies, including lateral cervical cysts/sinuses or dermal sinuses of anterior chest lesions, are usually located at the lower neck at the anterior or posterior border of the sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM). We aimed to demonstrate the usefulness of ultrasonography in the differential diagnosis and evaluation of CCBRs. Methods: We evaluated 22 lesions of 20 pediatric patients, classified into CCBR and dermal lesion groups. We used Fisher's exact test to evaluate differences between these groups in terms of lesion shape (low‐echoic mass‐ or tubular‐like), whether the lesion was adjacent to/in contact with the SCM or not, and the presence or absence of a concave SCM caused by the lesion. Results: Of the 22 lesions, 8 were CCBRs, and 14 were dermal lesions. We found a significant difference in the presence/absence of adjacency to or contact with the SCM (presence/absence of adjacency to or contact with the SCM in CCBRs vs that in dermal lesions: 6/2 vs 1/13, P =.002) and presence/absence of lesion‐induced concavity of the SCM (presence/absence of lesion‐induced concavity of the SCM in CCBRs vs that in dermal lesions: 3/5 vs 0/14, P =.036). The lesion shape (low‐echoic mass‐like/tubular‐like lesions) did not significantly differ between the two study groups (low‐echoic mass‐like/tubular‐like lesions in CCBRs vs that in dermal lesions: 5/3 vs 11/6, P =.624). This study investigated the impact of auditory stimuli on muscular activation patterns using wearable surface electromyography (EMG) sensors. Employing four key muscles (Sternocleidomastoid Muscle (SCM), Cervical Erector Muscle (CEM), Quadricep Muscles (QMs), and Tibialis Muscle (TM)) and time domain features, we differentiated the effects of four interventions: silence, music, positive reinforcement, and negative reinforcement. The results demonstrated distinct muscle responses to the interventions, with the SCM and CEM being the most sensitive to changes and the TM being the most active and stimulus dependent. Post hoc analyses revealed significant intervention-specific activations in the CEM and TM for specific time points and intervention pairs, suggesting dynamic modulation and time-dependent integration. Multi-feature analysis identified both statistical and Hjorth features as potent discriminators, reflecting diverse adaptations in muscle recruitment, activation intensity, control, and signal dynamics. These features hold promise as potential biomarkers for monitoring muscle function in various clinical and research applications. Finally, muscle-specific Random Forest classification achieved the highest accuracy and Area Under the ROC Curve for the TM, indicating its potential for differentiating interventions with high precision. This study paves the way for personalized neuroadaptive interventions in rehabilitation, sports science, ergonomics, and healthcare by exploiting the diverse and dynamic landscape of muscle responses to auditory stimuli. The deep neck flexors are important for maintaining neck posture by stabilizing and supporting it through low-intensity contraction, ensuring static endurance. The subjects performed computer tasks after having their deep neck flexor endurance measured using a pressure biofeedback unit. The craniovertebral angle (CVA) and the muscle activities were measured while participants were completing computer tasks for 10 min. The deep neck flexor endurance was significantly negatively correlated with CVA changes at 0–2 min. The deep neck flexor endurance was significantly negatively correlated with sternocleidomastoid muscle and upper trapezius activity at 0–2 min. The deep neck flexor endurance negatively predicted CVA changes at 0–2 min and explained 28.8% of the variance in the CVA changes. The lower the deep neck flexor endurance, the earlier the simultaneous changes occurred in the CVA and the neck and shoulder muscle activities during computer tasks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Paraneoplastic lower motor neuronopathies (LMNs) have rarely been reported with malignant liver tumors. A 71-year-old man developed chronic progressive upper limb and cranial nerve paralysis. Electromyography examination suggests chronic progressive neuronal damage involving the right C4-T1 nerve root innervated muscle and the right sternocleidomastoid muscle. Magnetic resonance imaging suggested the presence of a malignant liver tumor. His serum was positive for anti-Yo antibodies. Hepatic artery chemoembolization was performed, followed by treatment with pembrolizumab and lenvatinib. The patient's condition improved, and paraneoplastic LMNs were diagnosed. Paraneoplastic causes should be considered in the differential diagnosis of chronic progressive LMNs. A combination of surgical treatment and immunotherapy may result in a favorable outcome. Extraosseous Ewing's sarcoma is extremely rare in the soft tissues of the neck, especially in the sternocleidomastoid muscle. It usually manifests clinically as a rapidly growing mass that shows great potential for local spread. The aim of this paper is to present a rare case of еxtraosseous Ewing's sarcoma in the sternocleidomastoid muscle. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of extraskeletal Ewing's sarcoma at this location. The patient was admitted to our clinic because of a neck tumefaction. The computerized tomography finding showed a tumor mass, most of which was in the V region of the neck, measuring 40 × 27 × 35 mm. Pathohistological and immunohistochemical findings showed that it was Ewing's sarcoma. Unfortunately, the patient passed away nine months after the initial diagnosis. Extraosseous Ewing sarcoma is a rare, fast-growing malignant tumor manifesting histomorphological similarities to bone Ewing's sarcoma. Most reports state that extraosseous Ewing sarcoma has a worse prognosis than skeletal. Extraosseous Ewing sarcoma should be borne in mind in the differential diagnosis of soft tissue tumors of the neck. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Occipital Neuralgia (ON) is defined as a unilateral or bilateral pain in the posterior area of the scalp occurring in the distribution area or areas of the greater occipital nerve (GON), lesser occipital nerve (LON), and/or third occipital nerve (TON). In the present study, the purpose was to show the possible importance of the triangular area (TA) in nerve block applied in ON by measuring the TA between GON, TON, and LON. Methods: A total of 24 cadavers (14 males, 10 females) were used in the present study. The suboccipital region was dissected, revealing the points where the GON and TON pierced the trapezius muscle and superficial area, and the point where the LON left the sternocleidomastoid muscle from its posterior edge and was photographed. The area of the triangle between the superficial points of these three nerves and the center of gravity of the triangle (CGT) were determined by using the Image J Software and the results were analyzed statistically. Results: The mean TA values were 952.82 ± 313.36 mm2 and 667.55 ± 273.82 mm2, respectively in male and female cadavers. Although no statistically significant differences were detected between the sides (p > 0.05), a statistically significant difference was detected between the genders (p < 0.05). The mean CGT value was located approximately 5 cm below and 3-3.5 cm laterally from the external occipital protuberance in both genders and sides. Conclusion: In ON that has more than one occipital nerve involvement, all occipital nerves can be blocked by targeting TA with a single occipital nerve block, and thus, the side effects that may arise from additional blocks can be reduced. Aim: Occlusal splint treatment is commonly used to treat a variety of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), with efficacy ranging between 70% and 90%. Centric splints are effective in relieving muscular soreness in individuals with TMD. Electromyography (EMG) quantifies muscle activity and can be used as an accessory diagnostic tool to evaluate the efficiency of the splint on the masticatory complex. Electromyography is used for assessing patients with TMD and observing muscle electromyography. TMD patients have altered electromyographic (EMG) masticatory muscle activity because of its change in electrical activity index or because of the compensatory mechanism for the disorder. Therefore, this study serves to evaluate the efficacy of the centric stabilization splint on TMD using EMG. Settings and Design: This cross-sectional study enrolled Ten TMD Patients with TMD, who underwent treatment with centric stabilization splint. Materials and Methods: The study involved ten young adults with TMD aged 18–45 years who were recruited without regard to sex, religion, caste, or socioeconomic background. The participants were randomized to receive a flat-contact upper stabilization splint and pregelled EMG electrodes to assess the immediate impact of centric splints on TMDs. After 3 months of follow-up, muscle activity and muscle symmetrical activity were measured to assess improvement in the symptoms of TMD. Statistical Analysis Used: The Shapiro–Wilk test was used to assess the normality of the variables’ distribution using SPSS 26.0. Symmetrical activity and treatment response were investigated using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results: It showed an improvement in the temporalis, masseter, and sternocleidomastoid muscles’ resting EMG activity. A statistically significant improvement was seen in the EMG activity of the bilateral temporalis, right masseter, right sternocleidomastoid, and left digastric muscles while clenching. The masseter, sternocleidomastoid, and digastric muscles all displayed significantly enhanced symmetrical activity (P < 0.05). Conclusions: This research concludes that a centric stabilizing splint assists in relieving TMD symptoms. There was enhanced masticatory muscle activity both at rest and during function. Furthermore, there was an improvement in symmetrical activity of the masticatory muscles, which improved balance and enhanced the effective functioning of the masticatory complex. BACKGROUND: Deep neck flexor muscle atrophy and increased superficial neck muscle activation are associated with disability and pain intensity in individuals with neck pain. There is a lack of evidence to support direct assessment of deep neck flexor muscles in a non-invasive way during exercise performance to help determine the effectiveness of different neck strengthening exercises. OBJECTIVE: Compare longus colli (LC) and sternocleidomastoid (SCM) activation between individuals with and without neck pain using real time ultrasound (RTUS) during a series of craniocervical exercises. METHODS: This cross-sectional cohort study recruited 10 control and 10 neck pain participants to complete four deep neck flexor activation activities involving varying levels of craniocervical flexion. Dimensions of the LC and SCM were measured using RTUS at rest and during exercise. Independent t-tests assessed baseline differences and analysis of variance examined activation changes. RESULTS: At rest, the neck pain group had significantly smaller cross-sectional area and thickness of the LC compared to the control group (p < 0.05). During exercise, the neck pain group showed significantly larger increases in LC thickness and cross-sectional area across exercise compared to the control group, with no differences in SCM activation between groups. CONCLUSIONS: Despite atrophy, individuals with neck pain can activate their deep neck flexor muscles appropriately without activating their superficial neck flexor muscles in a supine series of craniocervical flexion exercise as measured by non-invasive ultrasound imaging. Background: Although the surgical release of the sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM) is required for residual congenital muscular torticollis (CMT), the surgical outcomes between bipolar and unipolar SCM release remained unclear. The purpose of the present study was to assess surgical outcomes after bipolar and unipolar release of SCM in adolescent/adult patients with neglected CMT. Methods: Twenty-one consecutive adolescent/adult patients with neglected CMT who underwent surgical treatment were enrolled. Clinical and radiographic outcomes were evaluated at preoperative and final follow-up. Results: The bipolar release of SCM was performed in 3 patients (B group; males, n = 1, females, n = 2) and the unipolar release of SCM in 18 patients (U group; males, n = 6, females, n = 12). The mean age at surgery was 40.0 ± 17.0 years in Group B, and that was 32.3 ± 13.1 years in Group U (p = 0.47). The mean follow-up period was 16.0 ± 5.7 months in Group B and 10.4 ± 7.6 months in Group U (p = 0.22). Cervicomandibular angle correction rates were comparable at 75.4 ± 2.4% for the B group and 73.1 ± 11.7% for the U group (p = 0.62). There was no significant difference in clinical outcome according to the modified Cheng and Tang score between the two groups (p = 0.89). No major complications arose, although one patient exhibited a transient neurological deficit of the greater auricular nerve, and one patient developed a hematoma in the B group. Conclusions: The unipolar SCM release appeared to be a non-inferiority and less invasive procedure, minimizing surgical scars and avoiding potential auricular nerve damage in adolescent/adult patients with neglected CMT. Introduction: Congenital muscular torticollis (CMT) is an asymmetrical head position resulting from structural changes in the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle that occurs early during a child's development or due to perinatal trauma. Children with CMT exhibit a marked imbalance in tension between the SCMs. In a typical clinical picture, an ultrasound scan is performed to reveal characteristic lesions, such as tissue fibrosis or post-traumatic changes. An early diagnosis of CMT in newborns and the implementation of treatment offer the chance of a complete resolution. Torticollis treatment aims to restore the SCM's normal function. Surgical treatment is performed when conservative methods fail to improve the patient's condition. The indications that surgery is needed include a marked shortening of the SCM, persistent fibrosis in the muscle, constant head and facial asymmetry, and rotation or lateral flexion in the cervical spine restricted by >15°. Of all the newborn and infant anomalies, congenital torticollis is the third most common after hip dysplasia and equinovarus deformities. Some authors demonstrate that torticollis coexists with hip dysplasia. Aim: The aim of this study was to collect data on infants referred to paediatric rehabilitation and to identify the risk factors associated with CMT in this group of patients, as well as to assess demographic and clinical characteristics concerning risk factors. Materials and methods: The target population for this retrospective study consisted of 111 infants aged 0 to 5 months born in Poland and diagnosed with and undergoing treatment due to CMT. The following were determined: the relationship between the side of the CMT location and the type of delivery (caesarean section vs. vaginal), the relationship between the body weight at birth and the side of the CMT location, the relationship between the extent of SCM thickening and the type of delivery, and the incidence of CMT depending on the order of delivery. Results and conclusions: The data revealed that CMT is less common in female infants (n = 51, 46%) compared to male (n = 61, 54%) infants, in whom a greater birth weight was reported (p < 005). Seventy-six percent (76%) of the paediatric patients with CMT were the offspring of primipara mothers. More often, children born via vaginal delivery had left-sided torticollis with a more significant broadening of the SCM, as shown on ultrasound scans, than right-sided torticollis. Background: Cervical chondrocutaneous branchial remnant is a condition located anterior to the sternocleidomastoid muscle in the neck. They have been given other name as it is abnormal entity, however they have been designated a distinctive term as of 1997. Although not confirmed, the true origin of lesion has been under scrutiny for the past century, and scarcity of reported cases hinders this process. Introduction: The skeletal muscle's echo intensity (EI) is a measurement that can be used to assess the quality of the muscle and any muscle damage caused by training or activity. To determine its reliability, a limited number of studies have investigated the measurement of cervical muscles' EI. This study determines whether the EI of the cervical muscles can be reliably quantified using the Adobe Photoshop software. Materials and Methods: The mean EI of the cervical muscles was measured using the standard histogram function of Adobe Photoshop CS6 in 20 healthy women. Results: The measurement of EI of cervical muscles using Adobe Photoshop CS6 is reliable in healthy women (intra-class coefficient >0.9). The values of the standard error of measurements of longus coli, sternocleidomastoid, levator scapula, semispinalis capitis, rectus capitis posterior, and oblique capitis superior muscles were 1.81, 2.09, 1.46, 2.02, 1.47 and 1.26, respectively. The values of the smallest detectable difference of longus coli, sternocleidomastoid, levator scapula, semispinalis capitis, rectus capitis posterior, and oblique capitis superior muscles were 7.11, 8.22, 5.74, 7.93, 5.79, and 4.97, respectively. Conclusion: Assessing the EI of the cervical muscles with Adobe Photoshop software is a viable method to determine the quality of the muscles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
