A theoretical study of the mechanism of magnon transfer through a ferromagnetic chain (F) has been carried out from magnetically ordered contact A to similar contact B (AFB system). The regime of spin excitation transport is considered, when the inner section of the chain with identical paramagnetic units acts as a bridge for magnon transfer and thereby is poorly populated by magnons. In this case, the magnon transfer can be carried out by sequential hopping the localized magnon across all units of the chain or/and tunneling the magnon between the terminal units of the chain by a "superexchange" mechanism. The latter involves in the tunneling route the virtual delocalized magnons. The analytical dependence of the corresponding transfer rates on the number of paramagnetic bridge units is found and the magnon analog of the Seebeck and Peltier effects is predicted. In this work, we theoretically study the switching and oscillation dynamics in strained non-collinear antiferromagnet (AFM) Mn3X (X = Sn, Ge, etc.). Using the perturbation theory, we identify three separable dynamic modes—one uniform and two optical modes, for which we analytically derive the oscillation frequencies and effective damping. We also establish a compact, vector equation for describing the dynamics of the uniform mode, which is in analogy to the conventional Landau–Lifshitz–Gilbert (LLG) equation for ferromagnet but captures the unique features of the cluster octuple moment. Extending our model to include spatial inhomogeneity, we are able to describe the excitations of dissipative spin wave and spin superfluidity state in the non-collinear AFM. Furthermore, we carry out numerical simulations based on coupled LLG equations to verify the analytical results, where good agreements are reached. Our treatment with the perturbative approach provides a systematic tool for studying the dynamics of non-collinear AFM and is generalizable to other magnetic systems in which the Hamiltonian can be expressed in a hierarchy of energy scales. We investigated the field-dependent Néel relaxation time of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) in an AC excitation field. Specifically, a fundamental component of the magnetization for immobilized MNPs was studied by numerical simulation while changing the frequency f and amplitude Hac of the field. From the simulation results, we clarified the Hac dependence of the effective Néel relaxation time τN,e and obtained an empirical expression for τN,e(Hac) for the first time. The expression was obtained for the cases when the angle of the easy axis of magnetization in MNPs is fixed and randomly distributed. Using the Hac dependencies of τN,e and the previously reported Brownian relaxation time τB,e, we showed that the behavior of suspended MNPs changes from Brownian-dominant to Néel-dominant when Hac increases, even when the MNP parameters are fixed, and we obtained an expression for the boundary field between them. Furthermore, we classified several types of responses for the suspended MNPs in the AC field using the magnitude relationship among τN,e(Hac), τB,e(Hac), and 1/(2πf). Finally, we experimentally verified the classification, and reasonable agreement was observed between the experiment and analysis. Quantum technologies utilize photons in a wide range of spectra, from microwave to visible light. Interactions between photons at different frequencies can be mediated by the collective excitation of spins in a ferromagnetic material. Here, we present optic-to-microwave conversions using the spin mode. In the conversion system, we observe that the generation of microwaves can be controlled by the polarization of the infrared input. Furthermore, we miniaturize the system and demonstrate conversion in a cryogenic environment, where microwave photons can be manipulated in the quantum regime. The vibrational dynamics of solids is described by phonons constituting basic collective excitations in equilibrium crystals. Here, we consider a non-equilibrium active solid, formed by self-propelled particles, which bring the system into a non-equilibrium steady-state. We identify novel vibrational collective excitations of non-equilibrium (active) origin, which coexist with phonons and dominate over them when the system is far from equilibrium. These vibrational excitations are interpreted in the framework of non-equilibrium physics, in particular, stochastic thermodynamics. We call them "entropons" because they are the modes of spectral entropy production (at a given frequency and wave vector). The existence of entropons could be verified in future experiments on dense self-propelled colloidal Janus particles and granular active matter, as well as in living systems, such as dense cell monolayers. We investigate the ultrafast spin dynamics of the prototypical topological insulator Bi2Se3 using time-resolved Kerr rotation (polarization-change) measurements across near-infrared wavelengths. The Kerr rotation angle Δ θ K of Bi2Se3 was found to significantly depend on the photon energy around a resonance transition (∼ 1.0 eV) of bulk states, as well as the ellipticity of the pump light, in the presence of spin excitation. The observed photon-energy dependence of Δ θ K can be well simulated by assuming spin-dependent refractive-index changes in the presence of bandgap renormalization and state-filling effect upon photoexcitation. Our study delivers comprehensive insights into the opto-spintronic properties of bulk Bi2Se3 and the fundamental physical processes underlying polarization changes. Optically active spin defects in wide bandgap semiconductors serve as a local sensor of multiple degrees of freedom in a variety of "hard" and "soft" condensed matter systems. Taking advantage of the recent progress on quantum sensing using van der Waals (vdW) quantum materials, here we report direct measurements of spin waves excited in magnetic insulator Y3Fe5O12 (YIG) by boron vacancy VB- spin defects contained in few-layer-thick hexagonal boron nitride nanoflakes. We show that the ferromagnetic resonance and parametric spin excitations can be effectively detected by VB- spin defects under various experimental conditions through optically detected magnetic resonance measurements. The off-resonant dipole interaction between YIG magnons and VB- spin defects is mediated by multi-magnon scattering processes, which may find relevant applications in a range of emerging quantum sensing, computing, and metrology technologies. Our results also highlight the opportunities offered by quantum spin defects in layered two-dimensional vdW materials for investigating local spin dynamic behaviors in magnetic solid-state matters. This research paper presents systematic micromagnetic modeling of dynamic spin solitons carried by perpendicular magnetization component on a topologically preserved chiral sequence of uniform 360° in-plane domain walls with fixed boundaries in a strip. The long, narrow strip of a soft, magnetic thin film has a repeated in-plane magnetization pattern such that the local magnetization will rotate uniformly in a single chirality, either clockwise or counterclockwise, when moving along the strip in one direction at a constant speed. As spins in an excited soliton precess around its local magnetization field, the exchange interaction with the underlying chiral magnetization configuration yields a linear soliton motion with the direction determined by the handedness of precession and the underlying magnetization chirality. Magnonic crystals with artificial micro/nanomagnetic pattern act as low‐loss information carriers in many microwave devices. The excitation and control of spin waves inside is essential and fundamental in magnonic crystal applications. Herein, permalloy micro‐disk patterns are constructed on a continuous permalloy film, and they succeed in exciting spin waves in this bilayer‐structured magnonic crystal. The spin‐wave modes can be effectively tuned by varying the periodic parameter (P) of upper‐layer disk pattern, which is confirmed by the transition from single‐peak to multi‐peak in ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectra with P decreased from 4 to 0.5 μm. The split in FMR spectra is reconstructed by micromagnetic simulation, revealing that three spin‐wave modes are respectively excited by the domain walls of below‐layer continuous film, geometrical restriction of permalloy micro‐disk, and magnetic coupling between neighboring permalloy micro‐disks. The tunable spin‐wave behavior in this bilayer‐structured magnonic crystal presents broad application prospect in programmable spintronic devices at micro/nanoscale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spin torque oscillators (STOs) are emerging microwave devices that can potentially be used in spin-logic devices and the next-generation high-speed computing architecture. Thanks to their non-linear nature, STOs are easily tunable by the magnetic field and the dc current. Spin Hall nano-oscillators are promising types of STOs and most of the current studies focus on localized modes that can be easily excited. Here, we study using micromagnetic simulations, the nature of the spin-torque-induced excitations in nanowire devices made of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) materials. Our results showed that, upon including PMA, the excitation of localized and propagating spin wave modes is feasible. We study the nature of the mode excitations as a function of the PMA strength ( K u) and the current. Indeed, we estimate a critical value of K u to allow for the excitation of the propagating spin wave. We attribute this mode selectivity between localized and propagating modes to the magnitude and the change of the sign of the nonlinearity of the system from negative to positive at a non-zero K u , which is supported by analytical calculations. Recent technological advancement in scanning tunneling microscopes has enabled the measurement of spin-field and spin–spin interactions in single atomic or molecular junctions with an unprecedentedly high resolution. Theoretically, although the fermionic hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM) method has been widely applied to investigate the strongly correlated Kondo states in these junctions, the existence of low-energy spin excitations presents new challenges to numerical simulations. These include the quest for a more accurate and efficient decomposition for the non-Markovian memory of low-temperature environments and a more careful handling of errors caused by the truncation of the hierarchy. In this work, we propose several new algorithms, which significantly enhance the performance of the HEOM method, as exemplified by the calculations on systems involving various types of low-energy spin excitations. Being able to characterize both the Kondo effect and spin excitation accurately, the HEOM method offers a sophisticated and versatile theoretical tool, which is valuable for the understanding and even prediction of the fascinating quantum phenomena explored in cutting-edge experiments. Lu 2 O 2 S has high density, high melting temperature, and favorable thermal stability, making it an excellent matrix material for rare earth luminescence and X-ray sensitization screens. However, achieving high quality fluorescent powders with high crystal quality on a large scale is still challenging. By employing an optimized solid phase approach, Lu 2 O 2 S:Tb3+/Sm3+phosphors with a hexagonal shape and uniform particle size and showing high crystallization have been successfully synthesized. Spectral analysis reveals energy interaction between Sm3+ and Tb3+ in the Lu 2 O 2 S system (multistage interaction), indicated by spectral overlap, relative changes in luminescence intensity, and lifetime decay. By changing the excitation wavelength and dopant concentration, multicolor phosphors such as yellow-–green, orange–red, and orange–yellow could be created. Temperature-dependent emission spectroscopy shows that the system shows good luminescence performance even at high temperatures. X-ray excitation spectroscopy further confirm that the phosphors emit different colors (yellow, green and red) depending on the doping concentrations of Tb3+ and Sm3+ ion, indicating that the system has wide application potential in color displays and other relevant fields. The low-temperature electrical transport in the normal-state of overdoped cuprate superconductors is investigated based on the t-J model. The momentum relaxation due to the umklapp scattering between electrons by the exchange of the effective spin propagator is employed to evaluate the electrical resistivity within the framework of the Boltzmann transport theory. It is shown that the quadratic temperature dependence of the resistivity develops in the far-lower-temperature region, and is followed by a nonlinear temperature dependence of the resistivity in an extremely-narrow-crossover region and a linear temperature dependence of the resistivity in the low-temperature region. The obtained results also show that the same spin excitation governs both superconductivity and the electron umklapp scattering responsible for the low-temperature linear in temperature resistivity in the overdoped regime. Knowledge about nonequilibrium dynamics in spin systems is of great importance to both fundamental science and technological applications. Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) is an indispensable tool to study spin excitations in complex magnetic materials. However, conventional INS spectrometers currently only perform steady-state measurements and probe averaged properties over many collision events between spin excitations in thermodynamic equilibrium, while the exact picture of re-equilibration of these excitations remains unknown. In this paper, we report on the design and implementation of a time-resolved laser–neutron pump–probe capability at hybrid spectrometer (beamline 14-B) at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. This capability allows us to excite out-of-equilibrium magnons with a nanosecond pulsed laser source and probe the resulting dynamics using INS. Here, we discussed technical aspects to implement such a capability in a neutron beamline, including choices of suitable neutron instrumentation and material systems, laser excitation scheme, experimental configurations, and relevant firmware and software development to allow for time-synchronized pump–probe measurements. We demonstrated that the laser-induced nonequilibrium structure factor is able to be resolved by INS in a quantum magnet. The method developed in this work will provide SNS with advanced capabilities for performing out-of-equilibrium measurements, opening up an entirely new research direction to study out-of-equilibrium phenomena using neutrons. Here, we present the on‐surface synthesis of tridecacene molecules by thermal annealing of octahydrotridecacene on a Au(111) surface. We characterized the electronic structure of the tridecacene by scanning probe microscopy, which reveals the presence of an inelastic signal at 126 meV. We attribute the inelastic signal to spin excitation from the singlet diradical ground state to the triplet excited state. To rationalize the experimental findings, we carried out many‐body ab initio calculations as well as model Hamiltonians to take into account the effect of the metallic substrate. Moreover, we provide a detailed analysis of how the dynamic electron correlation and virtual charge fluctuation between the molecule and metallic surface reduces the singlet‐triplet band gap. An unconventional behavior of the spin order in strongly correlated two-dimensional electron systems based on MgZnO/ZnO heterostructures has been detected in the quantum limit at the filling factors 1 ≤ ν ≤ 2. Under the variation of the filling factor and the orientation of a magnetic field, inelastic light scattering spectra exhibit characteristic transformations of collective spin excitations, which indicate qualitatively different rearrangements of the spin configuration in the system: smooth depolarization at 1 < ν < 3/2 with the formation of spin textures and sharp ferromagnetic instability at a certain filling factor in the range 3/2 < ν ≤ 2. Comparison with the magnetotransport experiments reported in [J. Falson, D. Maryenko, B. Friess, et al., Nature Phys. 11, 347 (2015)] shows that the disappearance of spin textures under the variation of the field tilt angle correlates with the appearance of an incompressible state at ν = 3/2. We show that a coupling exists between nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in diamond in proximity to magnetoelastic spin waves generated by a voltage driven surface acoustic wave. Experimental measurements show the presence of coupling driven by both dipolar fields induced by a spin wave-like excitation and off-resonant coupling of the NV energy levels driven by acoustically driven ferromagnetic resonance dynamics. A model is proposed based on chiral coupling of the NV centers to the stray field that originates from a propagating magnetoelastic wave in a thin magnet, and model predictions are validated by experimental observations. Understanding of the coupling enables a direct measurement of the stray field polarization, which in turn provides a detailed picture of the resonantly coupled magnon–phonon interaction. Magnons are the quanta of collective spin excitations in magnetically ordered systems, and manipulation of magnons for computing and information processing has witnessed the development of "magnonics." A magnon corresponds to an excitation of the magnetic system from its ground state, and the creation of a magnon thus increases the total energy of the system. In this perspective, we introduce the antiparticle of a magnon, dubbed the antimagnon, as an excitation that lowers the magnetic energy. On the fundamental side, the introduction of antimagnons paves the way to study phenomena from high-energy physics that are hard to observe with elementary particles, such as the Klein effect, black-hole horizons, and black-hole lasing, in a condensed-matter setting. On the application side, the introduction of antimagnons yields physical intuition for schemes to amplify magnons that may eventually find applications in magnonics, and this is often based on analogies of the aforementioned high-energy phenomena. We investigate the stability and thermal occupation of antimagnons and verify our theory by micromagnetic simulations. We analytically investigate the one-excitation spin dynamics in a homogeneous closed spin-1/2 chain via diagonalization of the one-excitation block of the XX-Hamiltonian, which allows to derive the analytical expressions for probability amplitudes describing state transfers between any two spins of a chain. We analytically investigate the M-neighbor approximation ( M ≥ 1 ) of spin dynamics with arbitrary initial state and analyze its accuracy using special integral characteristics defined in terms of the above probability amplitudes. A magnetophotonic crystal (MPC) with a locally etched magnetic layer is proposed for all-optical excitation of magnetization precession in the confined area. When the sample is illuminated by circularly polarized monochromatic plane wave, the optical MPC mode and the effective magnetic field excited by the inverse Faraday effect are localized inside the etched area. Therefore, the optical impact on the spin system in a magnetically ordered medium becomes confined in both lateral directions on the order of tens of nanometers and along the film thickness serving as a nanoconfined source of spin waves. The dependence of the spatial distribution of the effective magnetic field and magnetization precession amplitude on the depth and dimensions of the etched area are addressed. A proposed design of the MPC can find its applications in the field of magnetization dynamics generation as a compact and stable source of the spin waves that allows compact arrangement of the sources for some complex spin waves excitations. The subpicosecond spin-transfer-torque (STT) related to the laser-induced spin current is an effective approach to exciting spin waves in a noncollinear magnetic configuration. However, its validity on the excitation of spin waves in a synthetic antiferromagnet is still far from conclusive. Here, we investigate the impact of subpicosecond STT on the coherent excitation of spin waves in CoFeB/Ru/CoFeB. After pulsed-laser exposure, we observe both the precessional signals of acoustic mode and optical mode and find that their precession amplitudes are magnetic configuration-dependent. Not as the common explanation in the previous reports that the spin waves are triggered by the transient modulation of effective field, we attribute the initial stimulation of magnetization precession mainly to the subpicosecond STT. This mechanism is further confirmed by the field-dependent precession amplitudes. Our results pave a way for the practice of subpicosecond STT in the potential application at terahertz range. Collective nuclear spin excitations, called nuclear spin waves or magnons, are enabled in strongly magnetic materials by the hyperfine coupling of the nuclear and electronic spins in an atom and the exchange interaction between electronic spins of neighboring atoms. Nuclear spin waves attracted the interest of theoretical and experimental researchers worldwide about four to five decades ago and then waned. Very recently, two experimental reports of nuclear spintronic effects in the canted antiferromagnet MnCO3 have shown that spin currents can be generated using nuclear spin states, bridging two quite separate worlds, one of nuclear spin excitations and the other of spintronics. In this Tutorial, we briefly review the basic concepts and properties of nuclear spin waves in ferro- and antiferromagnetic (AF) materials and present a few significant experimental results obtained some time ago with the uniaxial anisotropy AF MnF2 and the cubic anisotropy AF RbMnF3 and compare them with theory. We also briefly present the recent experimental observations of the nuclear spin pumping effect and the nuclear spin Seebeck effect in the canted antiferromagnet MnCO3. In this work, we present experimental data demonstrating the feasibility of magnetic object location using spin waves. The test structure includes a Y3Fe2(FeO4)3 film with four micro-antennas placed on the edges. A constant in-plane bias magnetic field is provided by the NdFeB permanent magnet. Two antennas are used for spin wave excitation, while the other two are used for the inductive voltage measurement. There are nine selected places for the micro magnet on the top of the film. The micro magnet was subsequently placed in all nine positions and spin wave transmission and reflection were measured. The obtained experimental data show the difference in the output signal amplitude depending on the micro magnet position. All nine locations can be identified by the frequency and the amplitude of the absolute minimum in the output power. All experiments are accomplished at room temperature. We present a general approach to justify the random phase approximation for the homogeneous Fermi gas in three dimensions in the mean-field scaling regime. We consider a system of N fermions on a torus, interacting via a two-body repulsive potential proportional to N-1/3. In the limit N → ∞, we derive the exact leading order of the correlation energy and the bosonic elementary excitations of the system, which are consistent with the prediction of the random phase approximation in the physics literature. The charge exchange (CE) reaction is an effective probe to study the structure of atomic nuclei in the isospin dimension, which has been studied for decades. To expand the range of nuclei studied by CE reactions to a wider range and research the structure characteristics of unstable nuclei, including the isospin symmetry, spin-isospin excitation, and nuclear symmetry energy, a semi-cylindrical time projection chamber (scTPC) prototype was designed and constructed to probe ( 3 He,t) CE reactions in inverse kinematics. The 266 nm UV laser was used to achieve electron-drift-velocity calibration. The scTPC has an energy resolution (FWHM) of 5.6% for α particles emitted by 241 Am radioactive source. The position resolution of scTPC is described by the residual method. The spatial resolution on the pad plane is 409 μ m. And the position resolution in the drift direction is 326 μ m, equivalent to an angular resolution of 0.4 ∘ . These performances suggest that the scTPC can measure Δ E and particle tracks precisely. The successful development of the scTPC prototype provides better conditions for the next step of experimental data analysis and processing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Superconductors are materials with zero electrical resistivity and the ability to expel magnetic fields, which is known as the Meissner effect. Their dissipationless diamagnetic response is central to magnetic levitation and circuits such as quantum interference devices. In this work, we used superconducting diamagnetism to shape the magnetic environment governing the transport of spin waves—collective spin excitations in magnets that are promising on-chip signal carriers—in a thin-film magnet. Using diamond-based magnetic imaging, we observed hybridized spin-wave– Meissner-current transport modes with strongly altered, temperature-tunable wavelengths and then demonstrated local control of spin-wave refraction using a focused laser. Our results demonstrate the versatility of superconductor-manipulated spin-wave transport and have potential applications in spin-wave gratings, filters, crystals, and cavities. Under investigation in this paper is the integrable Lakshmanan–Porsezian–Daniel (LPD) equation, which was proposed as a model for the nonlinear spin excitations in the one-dimensional isotropic biquadratic Heisenberg ferromagnetic spin. Our main purpose was to construct soliton and breather solutions on the nonconstant background for the integrable local and nonlocal LPD equations. Firstly, the Bäcklund transformations are constructed based on the pseudopotential of equations. Secondly, starting from the nonconstant initial solution sech and applying the obtained transformation, various nonlinear wave solutions of the local LPD equation are provided, including the time-periodic breather, W-shaped soliton, M-type soliton and two-soliton solutions, the elastic interactions between the two-soliton solutions are shown and the relationship between parameters and wave structures is discussed. Thirdly, beginning with the nonconstant initial solutions sech and tanh , the time-periodic breather, bell-shaped one-soliton and anti-bell-shaped one-soliton solutions of the nonlocal LPD equation are generated and these solutions possess no singularity. What is more, the time-periodic breather solutions exhibit the x-periodic background and double-periodic background, which is different from the previous results. The corresponding dynamics of these solutions related to the integrable local and nonlocal LPD equations are illustrated graphically. We present all-optical studies of spin dynamics in two classes of ferrimagnets. Both sets of experiments use table-top laser-based pump–probe techniques to examine the ultrafast and longer timescale spin excitations. We use the visible/near infra-red time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect (tr-MOKE) to follow the spin dynamics of a series of metallic (FeCo) 1 − x Gd x thin films with varying Gd content. Magnetic compensation in the films occurs at a Gd concentration of ≈ 26 % , and the spin dynamics of the films exhibit a non-monotonic variation in effective magnetization. We also examine spin dynamics in an insulating NiFe 2 O 4 spinel using ultrafast techniques up at extreme ultraviolet energies, which permit element-specific investigations. The element and time-resolved delay scans reveal a non-trivial interaction between spin excitations on the different magnetic sub-lattices of the magnetic insulator. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Propagation of dipolar-coupled transverse domain walls in a permalloy/non-magnetic/permalloy trilayer was investigated using micromagnetic modeling. Circulating stray fields meant that the walls adopted a composite structure with behavior analogous to walls seen in nanotubes. Wall velocities were sensitive to the chirality of the stray field circulation, with velocities of the most favored chirality enhanced by 32% compared with velocities seen in the individual constituent layers just below their Walker breakdown field. Additionally, Walker breakdown was completely suppressed within the trilayer for both chiralities, despite occurring in the constituent layers when modelled in isolation, leading to a maximum of 317% velocity enhancement. Wall velocity saturated around 1100 m/s due to the Cherenkov-like emission of spin waves, comparable to the magnonic regime of nanotubes. By reproducing the advantageous domain wall dynamics of nanotubes within a planar system, we demonstrate that ultrafast magnetic switching may feasibly be realized within a lithographically produced system. Magnons, the quanta of collective spin excitations in magnetically ordered materials, have distinct properties that make them uniquely appealing for quantum information applications. They can have ultra-small wavelengths down to the nanometer scale even at microwave frequencies. They can provide coupling to a diverse set of other quantum excitations, and their inherently gyrotropic dynamics forms the basis for pronounced nonreciprocities. In this article, we discuss what the current research challenges are for integrating magnetic materials into quantum information systems and provide a perspective on how to address them. Objective. Magnetorelaxomety imaging (MRXI) is a noninvasive imaging technique for quantitative detection of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). The qualitative and quantitative knowledge of the MNP distribution inside the body is a prerequisite for a number of arising biomedical applications, such as magnetic drug targeting and magnetic hyperthermia therapy. It was shown throughout numerous studies that MRXI is able to successfully localize and quantify MNP ensembles in volumes up to the size of a human head. However, deeper regions that lie far from the excitation coils and the magnetic sensors are harder to reconstruct due to the weaker signals from the MNPs in these areas. On the one hand, stronger magnetic fields need to be applied to produce measurable signals from such MNP distributions to further upscale MRXI, on the other hand, this invalidates the assumption of a linear relation between applied magnetic field and particle magnetization in the current MRXI forward model which is required for the imaging procedure. Approach. We tackle this problem by introducing a nonlinear MRXI forward model that is also valid for strong magnetic excitation fields. Main results. We demonstrate in our experimental feasibility study that scaling up the imaging region to the size of a human torso using nonlinear MRXI is possible. Despite the extreme simplicity of the imaging setup applied in this study, an immobilized MNP sample with 6.3 cm3 and 12 mg Fe could be localized and quantified with an acceptable quality. Significance. A well-engineered MRXI setup could provide much better imaging qualities in shorter data acquisition times, making nonlinear MRXI a viable option for the supervision of MNP related therapies in all regions of the human body, specifically magnetic hyperthermia. A technique for studying parametric instabilities in magnetic nanostructures is worked out using the developed computational algorithm for determining the bifurcation points of the nonlinear Maxwell operator. The instability of the process of parametric excitation of magnetostatic and spin waves (oscillations) in 2D gratings of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) is studied numerically as a function of the bifurcation parameters (the pump wave amplitude and frequency). The threshold values of the parametric instability of magnetostatic and spin oscillations in 2D grating of MPs (of micro- and nanosizes) are calculated depending on the distance between MNPs (the grating period). Recent neutron scattering experiments suggested that frustrated magnetic interactions give rise to antiferromagnetic spiral and fractional skyrmion lattice phases in MnSc 2 S 4 . Here, to trace the signatures of these modulated phases, we studied the spin excitations of MnSc 2 S 4 by THz spectroscopy at 300 mK and in magnetic fields up to 12 T and by broadband microwave spectroscopy at various temperatures up to 50 GHz. We found a single magnetic resonance with frequency linearly increasing in field. The small deviation of the Mn 2 + ion g-factor from 2, g = 1.96, and the absence of other resonances imply very weak anisotropies and negligible contribution of higher harmonics to the spiral state. The significant difference between the dc magnetic susceptibility and the lowest-frequency ac susceptibility in our experiment implies the existence of mode(s) outside of the measured frequency windows. The combination of THz and microwave experiments suggests a spin gap opening below the ordering temperature between 50 GHz and 100 GHz. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The physics of high- T c superconducting cuprates is obscured by the effect of strong electronic correlations. One way to overcome this problem is to seek an exact solution at least within a small cluster and expand it to the whole crystal. Such an approach is at the heart of cluster perturbation theory (CPT). Here, we developed CPT for the dynamic spin and charge susceptibilities (spin-CPT and charge-CPT), with the correlation effects explicitly taken into account by the exact diagonalization. We applied spin-CPT and charge-CPT to the effective two-band Hubbard model for the cuprates obtained from the three-band Emery model and calculated one- and two-particle correlation functions, namely, a spectral function and spin and charge susceptibilities. The doping dependence of the spin susceptibility was studied within spin-CPT and CPT-RPA, that is, the CPT generalization of the random phase approximation (RPA). In the underdoped region, both our methods resulted in the signatures of the upper branch of the spin excitation dispersion with the lowest excitation energy at the (π , π) wave vector and no presence of low-energy incommensurate excitations. In the high doping region, both methods produced a low energy response at four incommensurate wave vectors in qualitative agreement with the results of the inelastic neutron scattering experiments on overdoped cuprates. In the last decades, collinear magnetic insulating systems have emerged as promising energy-saving information carriers. Their elementary collective spin excitations, i.e., magnons, can propagate for long distances bypassing the Joule heating effects that arise from electron scattering in metal-based devices. This Tutorial article provides an introduction to theoretical and experimental advances in the study of magnonics in collinear magnetic insulating systems. We start by outlining the quantum theory of spin waves in ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic systems, and we discuss their quantum statistics. We review the phenomenology of spin and heat transport of the coupled coherent and incoherent spin dynamics and the interplay between magnetic excitations and lattice degrees of freedom. Finally, we introduce the reader to the key ingredients of two experimental probes of magnetization dynamics, spin transport and NV-center relaxometry setups, and discuss experimental findings relevant to the outlined theory. We expand the concept of natural transition orbitals in the context of real-time time-dependent density functional theory (RT-TDDFT) and show its application in practical calculations. Kohn–Sham single-particle wavefunctions are propagated in RT-TDDFT simulation, and physical properties remain invariant under their unitary transformation. In this work, we exploit this gauge freedom and expand the concept of natural transition orbitals, which is widely used in linear-response TDDFT, for obtaining a particle–hole description in RT-TDDFT simulation. While linear-response TDDFT is widely used to study electronic excitation, RT-TDDFT can be employed more generally to simulate non-equilibrium electron dynamics. Studying electron dynamics in terms of dynamic transitions of particle–hole pairs is, however, not straightforward in the RT-TDDFT simulation. By constructing natural transition orbitals through projecting time-dependent Kohn–Sham wave functions onto occupied/unoccupied eigenstate subspaces, we show that linear combinations of a pair of the resulting hole/particle orbitals form a new gauge, which we refer to as dynamical transition orbitals. We demonstrate the utility of this framework to analyze RT-TDDFT simulations of optical excitation and electronic stopping dynamics in the particle–hole description. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Studying multi-particle elementary excitations has provided unique access to understand collective many-body phenomena in correlated electronic materials, paving the way towards constructing microscopic models. In this work, we perform O K-edge resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) on the quasi-one-dimensional cuprate Sr 14 Cu 24 O 41 with weakly-doped spin ladders. The RIXS signal is dominated by a dispersing sharp mode ~ 270 meV on top of a damped incoherent component ~ 400-500 meV. Comparing with model calculations using the perturbative continuous unitary transformations method, the two components resemble the spin-conserving ΔS = 0 two-triplon bound state and continuum excitations in the spin ladders. Such multi-spin response with long-lived ΔS = 0 excitons is central to several exotic magnetic properties featuring Majorana fermions, yet remains unexplored given the generally weak cross-section with other experimental techniques. By investigating a simple spin-ladder model system, our study provides valuable insight into low-dimensional quantum magnetism. Quasi-one-dimensional spin ladders are useful models to study collective many-body phenomena. Here, the authors investigate the excitations of weakly hole-doped cuprate ladders using oxygen K-edge resonant inelastic X-ray scattering revealing fingerprints of spin singlet multi-triplon bound state and continuum modes that are relevant to understanding various collective spin phenomena, such as Majorana fermions. We study the block-wise correlations in a quantum spin system in the processes when certain blocks do not interact with each other. This happens, for instance, in the evolution governed by the Hamiltonian conserving the excitation number in the spin system (i.e., the z-projection of the total spin momentum in the system governed by the XX-Hamiltonian). We compare the entanglement in a particular fixed-excitation block with the entanglement in a complete state. We also study the entanglement in the multi-excitation blocks including several fixed-excitation blocks. The energy spectra and low-temperature magnetic properties of two one-dimensional Heisenberg mixed spin (s = 1, 1/2) systems, namely decorated two-leg mixed spin ladders with the lattice topology of polyacene, are studied. The gapless character of the exact excitation energy spectra for both ladder models has been determined. We found numerically that the model with macroscopic ground state spin S0 has gapped excitations with the spin S > S0. This leads to the appearance of an intermediate plateau in field dependence of magnetization at low temperatures. We have shown that the ladder with equal coupling in legs has the maximal size of this plateau at the same coupling in rungs. For a mixed spin ladder model with Ising interactions in legs, the appearance of two intermediate magnetization plateaus at low temperatures and some values of coupling parameters was shown. This work presents the formalism and implementation for calculations of spin–orbit couplings (SOCs) using the Breit–Pauli Hamiltonian and non-relativistic wave functions described by the restricted active space configuration interaction (RASCI) method with general excitation operators of spin-conserving spin-flipping, ionizing, and electron-attaching types. The implementation is based on the application of the Wigner–Eckart theorem within the spin space, which enables the calculation of the entire SOC matrix based on the explicit calculation of just one transition between the two spin multiplets. Numeric results for a diverse set of atoms and molecules highlight the importance of a balanced treatment of correlation and adequate basis sets and illustrate the overall robust performance of RASCI SOCs. We develop a stochastic theory that treats time-dependent exciton–exciton s-wave scattering and that accounts for dynamic Coulomb screening, which we describe within a mean-field limit. With this theory, we model excitation-induced dephasing effects on time-resolved two-dimensional coherent optical lineshapes and we identify a number of features that can be attributed to the many-body dynamics occurring in the background of the exciton, including dynamic line narrowing, mixing of real and imaginary spectral components, and multi-quantum states. We test the model by means of multidimensional coherent spectroscopy on a two-dimensional metal-halide semiconductor that hosts tightly bound excitons and biexcitons that feature strong polaronic character. We find that the exciton nonlinear coherent lineshape reflects many-body correlations that give rise to excitation-induced dephasing. Furthermore, we observe that the exciton lineshape evolves with the population time over time windows in which the population itself is static in a manner that reveals the evolution of the multi-exciton many-body couplings. Specifically, the dephasing dynamics slow down with time, at a rate that is governed by the strength of exciton many-body interactions and on the dynamic Coulomb screening potential. The real part of the coherent optical lineshape displays strong dispersive character at zero time, which transforms to an absorptive lineshape on the dissipation timescale of excitation-induced dephasing effects, while the imaginary part displays converse behavior. Our microscopic theoretical approach is sufficiently flexible to allow for a wide exploration of how system-bath dynamics contribute to linear and non-linear time-resolved spectral behavior. Using an atomistic spin model, we have simulated spin wave injection and propagation into antiferromagnetic IrMn from an exchange coupled CoFe layer. The spectral characteristics of the exited spin waves have a complex beating behavior arising from the non-collinear nature of the antiferromagnetic order. We find that the frequency response of the system depends strongly on the strength and frequency of oscillating field excitations. We also find that the strength of excited spin waves strongly decays away from the interfacial layer with a frequency dependent attenuation. Our findings suggest that spin waves generated by coupled ferromagnets are too weak to reverse IrMn in their entirety even with resonant excitation of a coupled ferromagnet. However, efficient spin wave injection into the antiferromagnet is possible due to the non-collinear nature of the IrMn spin ordering. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spin–orbit-torque-driven dynamics have recently gained interest in the field of magnetism due to the reduced requirement of current densities and an increase in efficiency, as well as the ease of implementation of different devices and materials. From a practical point of view, the low-frequency dynamics below 1 GHz is particularly interesting since dynamics associated with magnetic domains lie in this frequency range. While spin-torque excitation of high-frequency modes has been extensively studied, the intermediate low-frequency dynamics have received less attention, although spin torques could potentially be used for both manipulation of the spin texture and the excitation of dynamics. In this work, we demonstrate that it is possible to drive magnetic vortex dynamics in a single microdisk by spin-Hall torque at varying temperatures and relate the results to transport properties. We find that the gyrotropic mode of the core couples to the low-frequency microwave signal and produces a measurable voltage. The dynamic measurements are in agreement with magnetic transport measurements and are supported by micromagnetic simulations. Synthetic powder, ore samples, and mineral single crystals of goethite (α -FeOOH) were investigated with polarized Raman spectroscopy at temperatures from 293 K to 473 K. The symmetry of the vibrational modes, observed in different scattering configurations, was determined unequivocally. The assignment of the Raman-active modes to definite atomic vibrations is supported by two types of lattice-dynamical calculations: empirical shell model and ab initio density functional theory. The temperature dependencies of the line shape parameters of some Raman-active vibrations at temperatures near to the antiferromagnetic–paramagnetic phase transition infers for a significant spin–lattice coupling in this compound. The most informative in this aspect is the B 3 g phonon at 387 cm − 1 , which overlays a broad scattering background and displays a pronounced asymmetric Fano-line shape. The asymmetry increases in the paramagnetic state above the Néel temperature (T N = 393 K), indicating a strong interaction of this mode with the underlying excitation continuum. The origin of the excitation background is discussed in light of our experimental results and the existing data for the magnetic structure and transport properties of α -FeOOH. By using the molecular-orbital dimer approach, we calculate the spin–phonon coupling constants for the B 3 g mode as J ′ = − 0.2 eV / Å and J ″ = + 0.18 eV / Å 2 , respectively. Thus, we rationalize that, most probably, the scattering background stems from magnetic excitations, and the asymmetric shape of the B 3 g band is a result of a linear spin–phonon coupling of this mode with the Fe–O1–Fe spin dimers. The field of magnonics, which utilizes propagating spin waves for nanoscale transmission and processing of information, has been significantly advanced by the advent of the spin–orbit torque. The latter phenomenon allows one to overcome two main drawbacks of magnonic devices—low energy efficiency of the conversion of electrical signals into spin-wave signals and fast spatial decay of spin waves in thin-film waveguiding structures. At first glance, the excitation and amplification of spin waves by spin–orbit torques seem to be straightforward. Recent research indicates, however, that the lack of the mode selectivity in the interaction of spin currents with dynamic magnetic modes and the onset of dynamic nonlinear phenomena represent significant obstacles. Here, we discuss the possible route to overcoming these limitations, based on the suppression of nonlinear spin-wave interactions in magnetic systems with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We show that this approach enables efficient excitation of coherent magnetization dynamics and propagating spin waves in extended spatial regions and is expected to enable practical implementation of complete compensation of spin-wave propagation losses. Cavity magnonics is an emerging field that studies the strong coupling between cavity photons and collective spin excitations such as magnons. This rapidly developing field connects some of the most exciting branches of modern physics, such as quantum information and quantum optics, with one of the oldest sciences on Earth, the magnetism. The past few years have seen a steady stream of exciting experiments that demonstrate novel magnon-based transducers and memories. Most of such cavity magnonic devices rely on coherent coupling that stems from the direct dipole–dipole interaction. Recently, a distinct dissipative magnon–photon coupling was discovered. In contrast to coherent coupling that leads to level repulsion between hybridized modes, dissipative coupling results in level attraction. It opens an avenue for engineering and harnessing losses in hybrid systems. This article gives a brief review of this new frontier. Experimental observations of level attraction are reviewed. Different microscopic mechanisms are compared. Based on such experimental and theoretical reviews, we present an outlook for developing open cavity systems by engineering and harnessing dissipative couplings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The elementary spin excitations in strongly magnetic materials are collective spin deviations, or spin waves, whose quanta are called magnons. Interest in the experimental and theoretical investigation of magnons attracted many groups worldwide about 4–6 decades ago and then waned for some time. In recent years, with the advent of the field of spintronics, the area of magnonics has gained renewed attention. New phenomena have been discovered experimentally, and others have been predicted theoretically. In this tutorial, we briefly review the basic concepts of magnons in antiferromagnetic (AF) materials. Initially, we present a semiclassical view of the equilibrium spin configurations and of the antiferromagnetic resonance in AF materials with two types of magnetic anisotropy, easy-axis and easy-plane. Then, we present a quantum theory of magnons for these materials and apply the results to two important AF insulators, MnF2 and NiO. Finally, we introduce the concept of antiferromagnetic magnonic spin current that plays a key role in several phenomena in antiferromagnetic spintronics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Collective excitations of crystal vibrations or normal modes are customarily described using complex normal mode coordinates. While appropriate for calculating phonon dispersion, the mixed representation involving the complex conjugates does not allow the construction of equivalent phonon occupation number or modal dynamical quantities such as the energy or heat current specific to a wave-vector direction (q). Starting from a canonical solution that includes waves going to the left and right directions, we cast the Hamiltonian, normal mode population, and heat current in an exactly diagonalizable representation using real normal mode amplitudes. We show that the use of real amplitudes obviates the need for a complex modal heat current while making the passage to second quantization more apparent. Using nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations, we then compute the net modal energy, heat current, and equivalent phonon population in a linear lattice subjected to a thermal gradient. Our analysis paves a tractable path for probing and computing the direction-dependent thermal-phononic modal properties of dielectric lattices using atomistic simulations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
