Objectives: The etiology of exercise-related transient abdominal pain (ETAP) is not congruent among researchers notwithstanding numerous studies on the matter. No pursuit has sought to correlate ETAP with factors such as anxiety, stress, sleep dysfunction, and pain sensitivity that are linked to other gastrointestinal (GI) disturbances in athletes. Design: Cross-sectional observational study involving an anonymous survey. Setting: Online. Participants: One hundred sixty-eight male and female adults running at least 10 miles/wk. Assessments of risk factors: Age, body mass index, years of running experience, GI symptoms, the State-Trait Inventory for Cognitive and Somatic Anxiety (STICSA), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS)-14, Sleep Problems Index-I, and Pain Sensitivity Questionnaire. Main outcomes: Exercise-related transient abdominal pain prevalence over the past month as well as ETAP severity and frequency. Results: Exercise-related transient abdominal pain occurred in 39.9% of participants at least once in the past month. Exercise-related transient abdominal pain–positive runners were significantly younger and less experienced than ETAP-negative runners. Exercise-related transient abdominal pain–positive runners demonstrated higher resting and running-related GI symptoms, PSS-14, and STICSA scores compared with ETAP-negative runners. After accounting for age and experience, the ETAP-positive group had STICSA and PSS-14 scores that were 3.4 [95% confidence interval (CI), 1.0-5.8] and 4.1 (95% CI, 1.2-6.0) points higher, respectively, than the ETAP-negative group. State-Trait Inventory for Cognitive and Somatic Anxiety scores were significantly, modestly correlated (ρ = 0.27, P = 0.03) with ETAP frequency but not severity in runners who were ETAP-positive. Introduction: Infantile colic is a painful condition in the first months of infancy. This study was carried out with the aim of testing the hypothesis that massage treatment has a clinically relevant effect on this condition. Materials and Methods: This randomized clinical trial was conducted among 100 infants of <12 weeks of age with infantile colic. They were randomly assigned to either infant massage (n = 50) or rocking groups (n = 50). In the massage group, trained individuals taught the parents of the infants the massage technique and gave them a brochure. Rocking group parents was recommended to rock their infants three times a day for 1 week. Parents recorded the pattern of crying (numbers, length, and severity of crying). After 1 week of intervention, data were analysed using t-test, Chi square test, and repeated measurement analysis of variance (P < 0.05). Results: Significant differences were not observed in infant and mother demographic information. Before intervention, the mean of total number, length, and severity of crying were 6.12 (1.76) time/day, 4.97 (1.37) hour/day, and 6.60 (1.54) in the massage group and 6.96 (2.9) time/day, 3 (1.31) hour/day, and 5.98 (2.22) in the rocking group, respectively. After 1 week of intervention, the mean difference of total number, length, and severity of crying were 4.08 (1.83) time/day, 2.81 (1.77) hour/day, and 2.9 (2.37) in the massage group and 0.56 (2.28) time/day, 0.27 (1.09) hour/day, and 0.02 (1.64) in the rocking group, respectively. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is frequently associated with chronic abdominal pain (CAP). Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been proven to reduce chronic pain. This study aimed to investigate the effects of tDCS in patients with CAP due to IBD. This randomized, sham-controlled, double blind, parallel-designed study included 20 patients with either Crohn disease or ulcerative colitis with CAP (≥3/10 on the visual analog scale (VAS) in 3/6 months). Anodal or sham tDCS was applied over the primary motor cortex for 5 consecutive days (2 mA, 20 minutes). Assessments included VAS, pressure pain threshold, inflammatory markers, and questionnaires on quality of life, functional and disease specific symptoms (Irritable Bowel Syndrome-Severity Scoring System [IBS-SSS]), disease activity, and pain catastrophizing. Follow-up data were collected 1 week after the end of the stimulation. Statistical analyses were performed using analysis of variance and t tests. There was a significant reduction of abdominal pain in the anodal tDCS group compared with sham tDCS. This effect was evident in changes in VAS and pressure pain threshold on the left and right sides of the abdomen. In addition, 1 week after stimulation, pain reduction remained significantly decreased in the right side of the abdomen. There was also a significant reduction in scores on pain catastrophizing and on IBS-SSS when comparing both groups. Inflammatory markers and disease activity did not differ significantly between groups throughout the experiment. Transcranial direct current stimulation proved to be an effective and clinically relevant therapeutic strategy for CAP in IBD. A surgical sponge left in abdominal cavity following completion of the operation (Gossypiboma) is a rare entity. They may not only cause aseptic reactions without significant symptom, but they may also lead to exudative reaction which is manifested in the early phase with non-specific symptoms or they may manifest in the late phase with abscess and palpable mass symptoms. Surgical gauze pad will initiate a granulomatous reaction and it may appear as a large intra-abdominal mass. This condition is referred as gossypiboma. Gossypiboma should be considered in patients who have abdominal pain and intraabdominal abscess symptoms particularly in patients had abdominal operation previously. In this study, we present radiological findings of a 37-years old male patient who referred to our clinic with complaints of abdominal pain and fever and diagnosed as gossypiboma. Background: BRAF inhibitors such as vemurafenib are a new family of biological drugs, recently available to treat metastatic malignant melanoma. Methods: We present the case of a 38-year-old man affected by metastatic melanoma who had been under treatment with vemurafenib for a few days. The patient suffered from sudden onset of abdominal pain due to intra-abdominal hemorrhage with profuse hemoperitoneum. An emergency abdominal sonography confirmed the clinical suspicion of a splenic rupture. Results: The intraoperative finding was hemoperitoneum due to splenic two-step rupture and splenectomy was therefore performed. Histopathology confirmed splenic hematoma and capsule laceration, in the absence of metastasis. Exercise-related transient abdominal pain (ETAP) is more commonly known to athletes as a runner's stitch. Many athletes also report shoulder tip pain (STP) associated with the ETAP. Although widely known, ETAP remains under analyzed and under reported in the medical literature. Often thought of as benign and self-limiting, ETAP has been shown to be very detrimental to the performance of many athletes from novice to elite. This case report of an elite triathlete with ETAP and subsequent review of literature, outlines the various theories about the etiology of ETAP, the epidemiology associated with it, some differentials to consider, and how chiropractic care may benefit those suffering from ETAP. Acute abdominal pain is one of the most common causes for referrals to the emergency department. The sudden onset of severe abdominal pain characterising the "acute abdomen" requires rapid and accurate identification of a potentially life-threatening abdominal pathology to provide a timely referral to the appropriate physician. While the physical examination and laboratory investigations are often non-specific, computed tomography (CT) has evolved as the first-line imaging modality in patients with an acute abdomen. Because the new multi-detector CT (MDCT) scanner generations provide increased speed, greater volume coverage and thinner slices, the acceptance of CT for abdominal imaging has increased rapidly. The article discusses the exercise-related abdominal pain (ETAP). ETAP refers to the momentary pain below the rib cage on the right side caused by diaphragmatic cramp, ischaemia, irritation of the parietal peritoneum, jolting of the liver, trigger points and peritoneal ligament stretching. It is prevalent in activities involving repetitive torso movement, either vertical translation or longitudinal rotation. Results of the survey showed that ETAP is particularly common in athletes, which limits their performance. It is also suggested that the timing of the pre-event meal and the meal itself seemed to be related to the onset and severity of ETAP. Among the foods that are associated with ETAP include reconstituted fruit juices and beverages high in carbohydrate content and osmolality.
