Some authors claim existential therapy is growing but no evidence or data about its geographical distribution has been found. This paper is a first attempt to map out the distribution of existential psychotherapies and psychotherapists around the globe. Two studies are presented: A systematic online search of international existential institutions and an online questionnaire survey of existential psychotherapists and counsellors worldwide. A total of 128 existential therapy institutions were found in 42 countries and 1,264 existential practitioners from 48 countries responded to our questionnaire. Data indicates that existential therapies are spread worldwide and highlights the contemporary importance and reach of this this psychotherapeutic paradigm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper scrutinises the possibilities Martin Heidegger's notion of 'the event of revealing' ( Ereignis) poses for spatial theory. It shows how Heidegger's work on 'the event' and its 'fourfold' constitution (between earth, sky, mortals and divinities) affords a spatial understanding of ontology as a site revealed around the assemblage of things. Accordingly, spatial ontologies do not grow from the multiplicity of human constructions and social relations, but from the radical ontological finitude constitutive for the revealing of the material site of the thing. Through such post-human understanding of the event, it becomes possible to think spatiality, not just in accordance with the influence Heidegger's thought could have on the material understanding of spatiality, but in accordance with the rich understanding we could gain by exploring the politics of finite ontologies, the politics intrinsic for the different happenings of revealing. This paper suggests that the vocabulary and meaningfulness of ‘evil’ can be re-articulated, and to some extent redeemed from the extremes of fundamentalism and relativism. It uses intellectual resources from Nigel Wright, Walter Wink and Rene Girard to reconstruct some foundations for a reworking of evil in human geography. It then presents an account of the reappearance of evil ‘after postmodernism’ in event, narrative and praxis, arguing that working through and acting against evil reveals its present nature in terms that defy the excesses of right–wing religious fundamentalism and the bland tolerance that can stem from an over-reliance on relativistic thinking. The paper considers how geographies of postsecular practice in areas such as homelessness emerge in response to discernment both of the spiritual interiorities and the exteriorities of landscapes of power, and of the ability of human action to influence these landscapes. In this article, the author discusses the different approaches and techniques for the understanding and engagement with the diversity of social geography. It says that social geography is multiple in relation to its forms and connections within the discipline. It states that social geography is a passé in a way of being traditional and out of date. Furthermore, social and cultural geography are both politically engaged and focus on pressing social issues, inequalities and justice.

The article focuses on the relationship between utopianism and geographies of emergence as well as on the criticism of critical geography. The author asserts that the normative turn, utopianism and the geographies of emergence are closely related. Moreover, he believes that critical geography must also remain critical of the social and political realities of the present, but also alert to, and perhaps productive of, better futures. He then highlights the need for sharp, incisive critiques of existent geographies of power and violence, although not at the expense of a careful, considered utopianism, but rather a critical geography inspired by both anger and hope.

Studies by psychologists suggest that males are more proficient than females in performing many types of spatial tasks. There is no information, however, as to whether the results of psychological research are relevant and applicable to geography. This paper summarizes psychologists' views of spatial skills, discusses them from a geographical perspective, and reports the results of five map-use experiments that were analyzed for sex-based differences among participants. Two of the studies, one with fourth-grade students and one with undergraduates, tested the students' ability to use cartographic illustrations as an aid to learning geographic information. The remaining experiments investigated how well male and female children and adults could perform typical map-use tasks such as route planning, symbol identification, visual search and estimation, and right/left orientation. In both sets of studies, the main sex-based differences were found in the younger age groups, where boys' performance was superior to girls'. Among college students, map-use scores for females and males were almost identical. These results suggest that the findings of psychologists regarding sex-based and developmental patterns in spatial abilities may not be directly transferable to geography. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The car dependence of people living in contemporary cities is a major concern for policy makers, who often find it difficult to persuade people into more sustainable transport modes. By contrast, recent insights from neuroscience have shown that a broad spectrum of behaviors can become habitual and, thus, resistant to change. Here, we outline the potential of collaboration between neuroscience and human geography aiming at a better understanding of habits that determine everyday commuting routines. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
