Biodiversity is a multidimensional concept spanning the diversity of organismal form and function (functional diversity) together with taxonomic and genetic diversity. In the case of plants, botanical gardens have historically strived to preserve taxonomic diversity with a global scope. However, their success in preserving global functional diversity lacks testing. Given that living collections in botanical gardens span major global vegetation types and evolutionary histories, it is reasonable to expect that a species assemblage in a botanical garden is a representative random sample of global vegetation. In such a case, botanical gardens should contain global functional diversity. Testing for this could elect botanical gardens as laboratories for studying global plant functional diversity, providing a much‐needed alternative in the way we study global patterns of this diversity facet. The importance of fine‐root diameter for ecosystem functioning is increasingly recognized, yet much remains to be learned about the variation in fine‐root diameter at large scales. We conducted an analysis of fine‐root diameter for five root orders for 1163 plant species to detect patterns in relation to resource availability (e.g. carbon, nitrogen, water and net primary production (NPP)), stress intensity (e.g. plant/soil biodiversity and soil bulk density) and temperature. First‐ to fourth‐order root diameters showed non‐linear relationships with mean annual temperature (except for first‐order root diameter) and/or with latitude. The diameters of the five root orders decreased with increasing mean annual precipitation, but increased with greater NPP, which was the strongest determinant of fine‐root diameter. Increasing soil biodiversity was associated with decreasing diameters of fourth‐ and fifth‐order roots, while greater plant biodiversity was associated with decreasing diameters of first‐ to third‐order roots. Soil total nitrogen concentration had a positive effect on first‐order root diameter but a negative effect on fourth‐ and fifth‐order root diameters. The patterns reversed for soil total phosphorus concentration. First‐ to third‐order and fifth‐order root diameters increased with greater soil bulk density. Second‐ to fourth‐order root diameters increased with higher soil pH. Overall, the variables related to climatic, biological and edaphic factors explained 44–63% of the total variance in the diameters of the different root orders. The unique patterns of plasticity observed in fine‐root diameter across root orders in response to varying environmental conditions contributes to a diversification of plant strategies for nutrient/water acquisition and transport under climate change. The evaluation of genetic diversity is important for the conservation of species. However, changes in genetic diversity during conservation are complex processes that depend on the characteristics of the species and environment. To evaluate the changes in genetic diversity from decline to recovery, we surveyed the coastal herb Calystegia soldanella in areas with varying degrees of non‐coastal plant invasion. First, to evaluate genetic diversity before the conservation measures, the spatial clonal structure of adults was investigated in a population invaded by non‐coastal plants. Second, to evaluate genetic diversity after the conservation measures, the regenerated individuals were investigated in the restoration plot. Moreover, to predict future genetic diversity without conservation measures, the effects of non‐coastal plant invasion on the production and genetic diversity of seeds were investigated using individuals from areas with various levels of non‐coastal plant invasion. In the adult population, 16 genets were identified in an 80 m × 4 m area. The maximum genet size was 30.3 m, suggesting the importance of clonal reproduction for population maintenance. In the restoration plots comprising 10 m × 10 m × 3 replicates, many seedlings (1.14 ramets/m2) emerged, resulting in high clonal diversity compared to that of the adult population. Therefore, the biomass and genetic diversity were rapidly restored at the beginning of the conservation practice. Non‐coastal plant invasion did not affect the genetic diversity of the seeds. However, it significantly reduced seed production. This suggests that non‐coastal plant invasion reduces sexual reproduction, resulting in the long‐term loss of genetic diversity. ABSTRACT This review explores the application of enzyme‐mediated analysis using electro‐carbon sensors to investigate plant diversity. Precision plant genotype fingerprinting (PPGF) represents a paradigm shift in agricultural science, merging the fields of phyto‐enzyme identification and quantification with cutting‐edge electro‐sensor technology. PPGF acts as a powerful tool for dissecting the genetic makeup of plant species by meticulously examining their unique phyto‐enzyme signatures. Electro‐sensor technology emerges as a pioneering force, utilizing electro‐analytical methods to precisely measure and differentiate these markers. Enzyme‐based sensors are capable of detecting plant metabolites even at low concentrations, enabling highly precise and accurate measurements. Furthermore, they are generally more eco‐friendly because they use fewer hazardous chemicals and produce less waste. These sensors can function under gentle conditions and can be miniaturized, making them highly suitable for field applications. This synergistic approach between PPGF and electro‐sensor technology ushers in a transformative era, offering unprecedented insights into plant genomics and paving the way for novel avenues for PPGF. Overall, enzyme‐based electrochemical sensors contribute to improving the efficiency and effectiveness of plant fingerprinting, thereby facilitating more comprehensive and precise plant phenotyping and research endeavours. Abstract\nSTATEMENT OF NOVELTYFour aquatic landscape plants and three veterinary antibiotics were selected to construct a hydroponic test system to analyze the tolerance, removal effect and mechanism of antibiotics. The results indicated that antibiotic concentrations from 0 to 100 μg·L−1 promoted plant heights and leaf chlorophyll contents, while antibiotics at concentrations > 100 μg·L−1 had inhibitory effects. The ability of different plants to remove antibiotics was Acorus calamus L. > Ceratophyllum demersum L. > Thalia dealbata Fraser > Nuphar pumila (Timm) DC. The plants with the best removal of norfloxacin, sulfadimethoxine and chlortetracycline were Ceratophyllum demersum L., Acorus calamus L. and Acorus calamus L. after 12 d of hydroponic cultivation using 100 μg·L−1 antibiotics, with removal rates of 66.6%, 63.0% and 63.2%, respectively. The accumulation of antibiotics in different plant tissues was root > stem > leaf and the accumulation increased with incubation time. The diversity of plant root biofilm microorganisms decreased with increasing treatment concentrations of antibiotics, while the abundance of dominant genera (Aeromonas, Bacillus, Lysinibacillus, Providencia, and Staphylococcus) showed an increasing trend. The findings imply that the antibiotic uptake by plants and the dynamics of the rhizosphere microbial community combine to promote antibiotic removal.Different plants have different removal capacities for pollutants, and optimal plant selection is critical for antibiotic removal in phytoremediation and constructed wetland projects. Currently, although there are a small number of preliminary studies on the effect and mechanism of plant removal of antibiotics from wastewater, there is a lack of systematic understanding of the antibiotic removal capacity, uptake and accumulation characteristics, and possible coupling of microbial communities in the root zone of common aquatic landscape plants. In this study, common veterinary antibiotics (chlortetracycline, sulfadimethoxine, and norfloxacin) were selected as pollutants based on the use of veterinary medicines in farms, and common aquatic landscape plants (Acorus calamus L., Thalia dealbata Fraser, Ceratophyllum demersum L., and Nuphar pumila (Timm) DC.) were selected for hydroponic tests under different concentration treatments of antibiotics. We analyzed the tolerance, removal effect, uptake and accumulation characteristics of these plants to antibiotics in hydroponic solution and the evolutionary pattern of the microbial community in the root zone, in order to improve the understanding of the phytoremediation mechanism of antibiotics in aquatic environments. Meanwhile, this study searched for aquatic landscape plants with superior removal capacity for antibiotics, which was expected to provide a reference for phytoremediation and constructed wetland projects. Summary In an attempt to address the large inequities faced by the plant biology communities from the Global South (i.e. countries located around the tropics and the Southern Hemisphere) at international conferences, this Viewpoint is the reflexive thinking arising from the concurrent session titled ‘Arabidopsis and its translational research in the Global South’ organized at the International Conference of Arabidopsis Research 2023 (ICAR 2023) in Chiba, Japan in June 2023. Here, we highlight the main obstacles plant biology communities in the Global South face in terms of knowledge production, as measured by the unequal production and citation of publications, investigating and advancing local plant genomics and biodiversity, combating disparities in gender and diversity, and current initiatives to break isolation of scientists. ABSTRACT Global warming is exhibiting a seasonal trend, while different seasons have different warming variations. However, the impact of seasonal warming on plants remains unclear. This study employed Open Top Chambers (OTCs) to simulate future seasonal warming scenarios in alpine meadow. The study examined plant community dynamics following long‐term seasonal warming. The transcriptional and physiological responses of two dominant species (Kobresia pygmaea and Stipa purpurea) were examined. Results suggest that seasonal warming effects are correlated with both the duration of warming and the season which warming occurs. A long annual warming duration, especially growing season warming, made plants confront various stresses. K. pygmaea adopted a stress‐avoidance strategy, showing a negative response, and leading to population decline or disappearance. This kind of dieback had also been observed in other Cyperaceae species. Meanwhile, due to positive responses, S. purpurea adopted a stress‐tolerance strategy and overcame the impact of warming, partially gained the dominance over Cyperaceae species. Overall vegetation coverage and plant community diversity decreased over the years. These results reveal the impact of seasonal warming to plants, explaining the reasons for changes in plant communities under seasonal warming and providing new insights for future plant conservation under seasonal warming. Summary: Plants naturally harbor diverse microbiomes that can dramatically impact their health and productivity. However, it remains unclear how fungal microbiome diversity, especially in the phyllosphere, impacts intermicrobial interactions and consequent nonadditive effects on plant productivity.Combining manipulative experiments, field collections, culturing, microbiome sequencing, and synthetic consortia, we experimentally tested for the first time how foliar fungal community diversity impacts plant productivity. We inoculated morning glories (Ipomoea hederifolia L.) with 32 phyllosphere consortia of either low or high diversity or with single fungal taxa, and measured effects on plant productivity and allocation.We found the following: (1) nonadditive effects were pervasive with 56% of fungal consortia interacting synergistically or antagonistically to impact plant productivity, including some consortia capable of generating acute synergism (e.g. > 1000% increase in productivity above the additive expectation), (2) interactions among 'commensal' fungi were responsible for this nonadditivity in diverse consortia, (3) synergistic interactions were approximately four times stronger than antagonistic effects, (4) fungal diversity affected the magnitude but not frequency or direction of nonadditivity, and (5) diversity affected plant performance nonlinearly with the highest performance in low‐diversity treatments.These findings highlight the importance of interpreting plant–microbiome interactions under a framework that incorporates intermicrobial interactions and nonadditive outcomes to understand natural complexity. Many plants rely on soil seedbanks to persist in fire‐prone ecosystems. However, knowledge of plant responses to fire is largely based on above‐ground dynamics. Quantifying how fire influences the seedbank of a diverse range of species will improve fire management. Here, we aim to understand how the timing of fires influences species occurrence in the soil seedbank, and how this relates to species traits, in a Mediterranean‐type ecosystem. We sampled the soil seedbank across 57 sites that represent a range of fire frequencies (1–9 fires in 81 years) and time since fire (1–81 years). Through a 15‐month germination experiment, we identified 39,701 germinates from 245 plant species. Using nonlinear models, we quantified the responses of 75 species' soil seedbanks to fire history and compared these to above‐ground responses. Fire influenced species' soil seedbanks according to seed longevity and species' life‐history traits. We observed a response of 15 species' seedbanks to time since fire: All were species with long‐lived seed, including eight annuals, five resprouters and an obligate seeder. Similarly, we observed a response of 17 species' seedbanks to fire frequency, 16 of which had long‐lived seed. Extensive periods without fire (>40 years) increase seedbank availability for annuals that form a long‐lived seedbank, and frequent fire (every ≤15 years) depletes it. We did not detect a consistent influence of fire on species from several other functional types. Many (53%) species found in the soil seedbank were not found in the above‐ground vegetation, and seven of the 22 modelled displayed an above‐ground influence of fire. Synthesis and applications: Fire frequency influences the probability of species occurrence in the soil seedbank. Frequent fire depletes seed availability of species that depend on long‐lived soil seedbanks for persistence. Yet, other species, including perennials with short‐lived seed storage, appear to be resilient to the frequency of fires experienced to date. We suggest fire management should aim to generate variation in fire frequencies within the landscape, including areas of low fire frequency, tailored to maintain rich plant diversity within the soil seedbank. Woody plants are a source of provisioning ecosystem services. Coffee management impacts forest composition, structure, and diversity. We studied the effect of coffee management intensification on woody plants and their associated provisioning ecosystem services under three contrasting forest management regimes in southwest Ethiopia. The study employed mixed approaches (vegetation assessment and ethnoecological study) to collect the data. Woody plants were collected from 189 plots and perceived local ecosystem services were identified by 136 individuals through an ethnoecological approach. The total number of woody plants recorded in the natural forest, coffee forest, and coffee agroforest was 971, 945, and 521 respectively. Species richness in natural forest, coffee forest, and coffee agroforest were 57, 54, and 53 respectively. The local people perceived 17 different provisioning ecosystem services collected from the three forest types. The result showed that there is a positive relationship between the diversity and use value of woody plants across the three forest management regimes. Coffee management intensification simplifies the stand structure, woody plant composition, and ecosystem services of the forest. Plant use value increases in coffee agroforests. Four areas (Pernambuco, Bahia and Northern Espírito Santo, São Paulo, and Araguaia-Tocantins refugia) have been hypothesised to have particularly high modern diversity due to their being located in areas of multi-millennial climate stability.To test if species persistence and climatic stability over the last 21,000 years can predict hypothesised refugia in the Atlantic Forest domain.We modelled the distributions of 282 tree species from various habitats and projected them using eight past climate scenarios in the last c. 21000 years. Based on the spatial overlaps among these projections, we inferred three types of refugia: species persistence refugium based on probability of occurrence, climatic stability refugium based on climate suitability and bioclimatic refugium based on the intersection of the previous two. We validated model projections with fossil pollen data.We identified five potential bioclimatic refugia (Bahia and Northern Espírito Santo, São Paulo, Paranaíba, Serra do Espinhaço and Subtropical Serra do Mar) and one climatic stability refugium (Pernambuco).We validated three of four previously hypothesised refugia and detected two additional ones by considering both species persistence and climatic stability as key determinants of refugia. The use of biodegradable plastics has been proposed as an alternative to mitigate the pollution problem caused by traditional non‐biodegradable plastics. However, the relative impacts of both types of microplastics on plant community productivity and diversity is not known. Moreover, it is unclear whether soil biota can differentially mediate the impacts of biodegradable and non‐biodegradable microplastics on plant communities. In this study, we investigated the effects of biodegradable and non‐biodegradable microplastics on plant community biomass production and diversity, and whether soil biota mediate these effects. We employed a fully crossed factorial design, growing six plant communities in the presence or absence of 10 individual microplastics, and in live soil versus sterilized soil. We hypothesized that: (1) Biodegradable microplastics have a less negative effect on plant community biomass production and diversity compared to non‐biodegradable microplastics. (2) Soil biota differentially mediate the effects of biodegradable and non‐biodegradable microplastics on plant community biomass production and diversity. Statistical analyses that included all 10 microplastics yielded two main findings. First, live soil ameliorated the negative effects of biodegradable microplastics on community shoot biomass. Second, the presence of microplastics, rather than their biodegradability, significantly reduced community diversity. Separate analyses of individual microplastics suggest that these patterns were driven by specific microplastics. The biodegradable microplastic polybutylene succinate (PBS) was the main driver of the pattern observed in community shoot biomass. In contrast, the biodegradable microplastic polycaprolactone (PCL) and non‐biodegradable microplastics ethylene‐vinyl acetate (EVA) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) were the main drivers of the pattern observed in community diversity. Further analyses excluding PBS from the global models, but including the other nine microplastics, revealed no significant differences in community shoot biomass and diversity between biodegradable and non‐biodegradable microplastics in live versus sterilized soil. Synthesis and applications. Our findings suggest that biodegradable microplastics, often considered environmentally friendly, are not necessarily less harmful than non‐biodegradable microplastics to the growth and diversity of plant communities. Some individual biodegradable microplastics, such as PBS, still pose significant ecological risks to plant community structure and productivity. Community‐wide assembly of plant–pollinator systems depends on an intricate combination of biotic and abiotic factors, including heterogeneity among pollinators in thermal biology and responses to abiotic factors. Studies on the thermal biology of pollinators have mostly considered only one or a few species of plants or pollinators at a time, and the possible driving role of the diversity in thermal biology of pollinator asemblages at the plant community level remains largely unexplored. More specifically, it is unknown whether diversity in the thermal biology of bees, a major pollinator group worldwide, contributes to the assembly and maintenance of diverse bee communities; broadens the spectrum of possibilities available to bee‐pollinated plants; facilitates interspecific partitioning of ecological gradients across habitats, seasons, and time of day; and/or enhance plant pollination success through complementarity effects. The objectives of this study were to assess the diversity in thermal biology of the bee assemblage that pollinates plants in a Mediterranean montane area, evaluate its taxonomic and phylogenetic underpinnings, and elucidate whether there existed seasonal, daily, between‐habitat, or floral visitation correlates of bee thermal biology which could contribute to partition ecological gradients among plant and bee species. Thermal biology parameters were obtained in the laboratory (K, intrinsic warming constant) and the field (thoracic and ambient temperature at foraging site, Tth and Tair) on individual bees of a diverse sample (N = 204 bee species) comprising most bee pollinators of the regional plant community. Species‐specific thermal biology parameters were combined with quantitative field data on bee pollinators and flower visitation for the regional community of entomophilous plants (N = 292 plant species). Results revealed that the regional bee assemblage harbored considerable diversity in thermal biology features; that such diversity was mostly taxonomically, phylogenetically, and body‐size structured; and that the broad interspecific heterogeneity in thermal biology represented in the bee community as a whole eventually translated into daily, seasonal, among‐habitat, and flower visitation patterns at the plant community level. This lends support to the hypothesis that broad diversity in thermal biology of bees can enhance opportunities for bee coexistence, spatiotemporal partitioning of floral resources, and plant pollination success. Documenting floristic diversity, its natural history traits and habitat affiliation offers crucial insights for developing conservation strategies and management plans for regional biodiversity. In this study, we employed random sampling technique to investigate the floristic composition, natural history trait diversity and habitat distribution among 12 major forest types spread across an elevational gradient of 350–3450 m a.s.l. in the western Himalayan region of Jammu and Kashmir. We recorded 451 species belonging to 90 families in the study region, with herbaceous growth form, perennial life span and therophyte categories dominant. We observed a steady increase in species richness from 800 to 2000 m a.s.l., with highest at 1750 m a.s.l. in the Himalayan dry temperate forest type and then a decreasing trend with elevation. In terms of species turnover, the lowest dissimilarity of 36.8% was found between the Himalayan dry temperate and Fir forests. Whereas, considering species replacement (βsne), the highest similarity of 17.3% was found between the lower western Himalayan and Himalayan dry temperate forests. This shows that beta‐diversity patterns between different forest types are mostly driven by species replacement. Multivariate analysis revealed three major groups in the entire forest species pool. Habitat‐wise, 34% species were recorded in the natural habitats, while the remaining 66% were found in human‐modified habitats (roadsides, piospheres). The emergence of the Linear Pottery Culture (LBK) during the Neolithic period within Polish territory 5400–4900 BC, introduced plant cultivation, yet the definitive list of cultivated species remains debated. This study examines plant assemblages (fruits, seeds, pollen, and spores) from the LBK settlement in Biskupice, southern Poland, aiming to identify cultivated and wild species used during the development of the first stable settlements in the Carpathian Foothills. Due to extensive sampling, Biskupice yielded over 11,000 macroscopic plant specimens, enabling detailed analysis of plant diversity, distribution, and implications for agrarian and dietary practices. The analysis revealed a focus on emmer and einkorn wheat cultivation, with barley playing a minor role, alongside evidence of flax and pulses. Radiocarbon dating supported the settlement's existence in the 6th millennium BCE, and confirmed the use of barley. However, a younger date excluded bread wheat cultivation at this site. The plant assemblage included a diverse array of herbaceous wild plants like black bindweed, fat hen and brome species, suggesting their economic use. Additionally, the presence of cockspur grass, linked with Southeast Asia, indicates alternative migration routes of weeds in Europe, as supported by radiocarbon dating. Palynological analysis suggests existence of nearby cereal plots or the processing of cereals at the settlement, supporting archaeological evidence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nutrient enrichment impacts grassland plant diversity such as species richness, functional trait composition and diversity, but whether and how these changes affect ecosystem stability in the face of increasing climate extremes remains largely unknown. We quantified the direct and diversity‐mediated effects of nutrient addition (by nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) on the stability of above‐ground biomass production in 10 long‐term grassland experimental sites. We measured five facets of stability as the temporal invariability, resistance during and recovery after extreme dry and wet growing seasons. Leaf traits (leaf carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and specific leaf area) were measured under ambient and nutrient addition conditions in the field and were used to construct the leaf economic spectrum (LES). We calculated functional trait composition and diversity of LES and of single leaf traits. We quantified the contribution of intraspecific trait shifts and species replacement to change in functional trait composition as responses to nutrient addition and its implications for ecosystem stability. Nutrient addition decreased functional trait diversity and drove grassland communities to the faster end of the LES primarily through intraspecific trait shifts, suggesting that intraspecific trait shifts should be included for accurately predicting ecosystem stability. Moreover, the change in functional trait diversity of the LES in turn influenced different facets of stability. That said, these diversity‐mediated effects were overall weak and/or overwhelmed by the direct effects of nutrient addition on stability. As a result, nutrient addition did not strongly impact any of the stability facets. These results were generally consistent using individual leaf traits but the dominant pathways differed. Importantly, major influencing pathways differed using average trait values extracted from global trait databases (e.g. TRY). Synthesis. Investigating changes in multiple facets of plant diversity and their impacts on multidimensional stability under global changes such as nutrient enrichment can improve our understanding of the processes and mechanisms maintaining ecosystem stability. Land plants are astounding processors of information; due to their sessile nature, they adjust the molecular programs that define their development and physiology in accordance with the environment in which they dwell. Transduction of the external input to the respective internal programs hinges to a large degree on molecular signaling cascades, many of which have deep evolutionary origins in the ancestors of land plants and its closest relatives, streptophyte algae. In this Review, we discuss the evolutionary history of the defining factors of streptophyte signaling cascades, circuitries that not only operate in extant land plants and streptophyte algae, but that also likely operated in their extinct algal ancestors hundreds of millions of years ago. We hope this Review offers a starting point for future studies on the evolutionary mechanisms contributing to the current diversity and complexity of plant signaling pathways, with an emphasis on recognizing potential biases. Pre‐emergent herbicides can reduce the abundance of invasive annual plants, but they can also harm native plants, particularly annuals or perennial seedlings, including seeds planted during restoration. We assessed the effects of imazapic and indaziflam on invasive target and nontarget native plants in the Great Basin, a region with extensive invasive annual grasses. We tested nontarget effects on native annual forbs in an agricultural field previously used to grow native annual forbs, which contained a large seed bank. We seeded perennial grass (Elymus elymoides) at multiple depths to determine susceptibility and resistance. Herbicides were applied at full and reduced rates to mimic the effect of litter in natural systems. We observed reductions in most non‐native species in all treatments, but also extensive reductions of native annual forbs, although these were offset at lower application rates, and some species (e.g. Amsinckia tessellata and Microsteris gracilis) were less susceptible than others. Herbicides, particularly indaziflam, reduced E. elymoides emergence, but planting seeds at 2–3 cm depths improved emergence, particularly for imazapic, with 15–68% greater emergence than seeds planted at 1 cm. We suggest surveys for native annual forbs and resistant invaders before applying herbicides and field testing to determine whether reduced rates could provide weed control while maintaining annual forbs. We suggest planting E. elymoides at 2–3 cm when applying herbicides, an approach that may be effective for other species. Grassland restoration efforts typically aim to recover lost biodiversity, guided by biologically diverse old‐growth grasslands as a benchmark. In most old‐growth grasslands, forbs greatly outnumber grasses in terms of richness and therefore contribute most to diversity, but globally, restoration practitioners continue to disproportionately focus on increasing perennial grass cover. While such grass‐centric restoration approaches might be appropriate for meeting some restoration goals, an increasing number of studies reveal negative effects of perennial grass cover on forb and total plant diversity in restored grasslands—with cascading consequences for other trophic levels and grassland functionality. To that end, we urge restoration practitioners to recognize the biodiversity costs of grass‐centric approaches and embrace forb‐centric approaches to meet the goal of increasing biodiversity in restorations. Transferring knowledge between well‐studied and understudied grassland systems around the world will facilitate the shared vision of conserving and restoring global grassland biodiversity. Plant phenotyping has been widely used to quantitatively describe the plant's anatomical, ontogenetical, physiological, and biochemical properties. However, traditional measurement can often pose some challenges in recent years, due to the destructive nature, subjectivity, high costs, and operational complexities, particularly with three-dimensional measurement equipment. In this study, an advanced measurement approach was introduced for plant phenotypic parameters using an improved version of the Neural Radiance Field (NeRF), termed L-NeRF. Capturing image data from a multitude of perspectives and harnessing the prowess of L-NeRF technology for three-dimensional reconstruction has unlocked a new paradigm in the non-destructive acquisition of essential plant phenotypic parameters. This method has illuminated the path to obtaining critical measurements such as plant height, leaf width, and leaf length with unprecedented accuracy. The Prosopis juliflora, serving as a case study within a meticulously controlled indoor experimental environment, has yielded results that are a testament to the method's precision. The determination coefficients (R²) for leaf width, leaf length, and plant height are nothing short of remarkable, with values of 0.9037, 0.7827, and 0.8516, respectively. These high R² values are a clear indication of the strong correlation between the measured parameters and their true values, highlighting the method's reliability and accuracy. In stark contrast to the traditional Structure from Motion (SFM) visual reconstruction techniques, the L-NeRF technology has demonstrated a significant acceleration in the reconstruction process, reducing the time by an average of 30%. Moreover, it has substantially improved model accuracy, evidenced by a nearly 45% reduction in the standard deviation of model precision. These enhancements are not just quantitative—they represent a qualitative leap forward in the efficiency and precision of plant phenotyping. The experimental outcomes not only validate the efficacy and practicality of L-NeRF technology in measuring plant phenotypic parameters but also highlight its potential to significantly augment research efficiency and precision. The implications of these findings are far-reaching, opening the door to future studies that will explore a wider array of plant species, thereby expanding the method's applicability and versatility. The significance of this research extends beyond the immediate context of the study. It heralds the potential to revolutionize phenotyping in plant biology. By streamlining data acquisition and enhancing the accuracy of measurements, L-NeRF technology is poised to elevate the standards of plant phenotyping research. Associational effects, whereby plants influence the biotic interactions of their neighbors, are an important component of plant–insect interactions. Plant chemistry has been hypothesized to mediate these interactions. The role of chemistry in associational effects, however, has been unclear in part because the diversity of plant chemistry makes it difficult to tease apart the importance and roles of particular classes of compounds. We examined the chemical ecology of associational effects using backcross‐bred plants of the Solanum pennellii introgression lines. We used eight genotypes from the introgression line system to establish 14 unique neighborhood treatments that maximized differences in acyl sugars, proteinase inhibitor, and terpene chemical diversity. We found that the chemical traits of the neighboring plant, rather than simply the number of introgression lines within a neighborhood, influenced insect abundance on focal plants. Furthermore, within‐chemical class diversity had contrasting effects on herbivore and predator abundances, and depended on the frequency of neighboring plant chemotypes. Notably, we found insect mobility—flying versus crawling—played a key role in insect response to phytochemistry. We highlight that the frequency and chemical phenotype of plant neighbors underlie associational effects and suggest this may be an important mechanism in maintaining intraspecific phytochemical variation within plant populations. Conspecific negative density dependence (CNDD) is thought to be a key process in maintaining plant diversity. However, the strength of CNDD is highly variable in space and time as well as among species, and correlates of this variation that might help to understand and explain it remain largely unquantified. Using Bayesian hierarchical models, we took advantage of 10‐year seedling monitoring data that were collected annually in every dry and rainy season in a seasonal tropical forest. We quantified the interspecific variation in the strength of CNDD and its temporal variation. We also examined potential correlates of this interspecific and temporal variation, including species functional traits (such as drought‐tolerant traits, defense‐related traits, and recourse acquisition traits) and species abundances. In the dry season, we found a negative relationship between the density of neighboring conspecific seedlings on seedling survival, while in the rainy season, there was a negative relationship between the density of neighboring conspecific adults on seedling survival. In addition, we found that interspecific variation in CNDD was related to drought‐tolerant traits in the dry season but not in the rainy season. Across years, we found that drought‐intolerant species suffer less CNDD during the dry seasons that have higher rainfall, whereas drought‐tolerant species suffer less CNDD when the dry season has lower rainfall. We also found that rare species suffered stronger CNDD in the dry season. Overall, our study highlights that CNDD is highly variable among species and through time, necessitating a deeper appreciation of the environmental and functional contexts of CNDD and their interactions. Climate change, landscape homogenization, and the decline of beneficial insects threaten pollination services to wild plants and crops. Understanding how pollination potential (i.e. the capacity of ecosystems to support pollination of plants) is affected by climate change and landscape homogenization is fundamental for our ability to predict how such anthropogenic stressors affect plant biodiversity. Models of pollinator potential are improved when based on pairwise plant–pollinator interactions and pollinator's plant preferences. However, whether the sum of predicted pairwise interactions with a plant within a habitat (a proxy for pollination potential) relates to pollen deposition on flowering plants has not yet been investigated. We sampled plant–bee interactions in 68 Scandinavian plant communities in landscapes of varying land‐cover heterogeneity along a latitudinal temperature gradient of 4–8°C, and estimated pollen deposition as the number of pollen grains on flowers of the bee‐pollinated plants Lotus corniculatus and Vicia cracca. We show that plant–bee interactions, and the pollination potential for these bee‐pollinated plants increase with landscape diversity, annual mean temperature, and plant abundance, and decrease with distances to sand‐dominated soils. Furthermore, the pollen deposition in flowers increased with the predicted pollination potential, which was driven by landscape diversity and plant abundance. Our study illustrates that the pollination potential, and thus pollen deposition, for wild plants can be mapped based on spatial models of plant–bee interactions that incorporate pollinator‐specific plant preferences. Mechanisms underlying large‐scale spatial patterns of species richness are one of the central issues in ecology. Although contemporary climate, evolutionary history, and historical climate change have been proposed as drivers of species richness patterns, variation in the relative importance of different factors remains a major challenge. Here, using newly compiled distribution data with a spatial resolution of 100 × 100 km for 43 023 angiosperms plant species in east Eurasia, we mapped species richness patterns for plants with different growth forms (i.e. woody versus herbaceous) and range sizes (i.e. wide‐ranged versus narrow‐ranged species), and compared the relative importance of the four hypotheses in explaining these patterns, i.e. freezing tolerance hypothesis, historical climate change hypothesis, Janzen's hypothesis (predicting that climate seasonality and topography determine species richness patterns), and diversification rate hypothesis. We found that species richness of all angiosperm plants presented a clear latitudinal gradient and was highest in southwestern China and Central Asian mountains. Notably, species richness patterns and their dominant drivers differed between species groups. Historical climate change was the dominant driver for richness patterns of all and herbaceous species. The freezing tolerance hypothesis dominated the drivers for all woody species, while Janzen's hypothesis dominated narrow‐ranged woody and herbaceous species. Our study suggests that different hypotheses contribute to large‐scale plant richness patterns via their effects on different plant groups. Our results did not support the diversification rate hypothesis, but demonstrated the high importance of historical climate change to plant diversity in east Eurasia, providing new perspectives on the mechanisms of plant diversity patterns in this continent. Plant taxa and traits do not necessarily show synchronous responses to ecological disturbance. Based on the observation that taxonomically over‐diversified communities might be phenotypically redundant, we speculated that taxonomic and phenotypic community reassembly might be decoupled after fire in Mediterranean ecosystems.We applied a multi‐trait approach to describe plant community re‐assembly after fire across three 20‐year chronosequences based on 117 species and 23 traits, including whole‐plant, above‐ground and below‐ground traits. We quantified the post‐fire trajectories of different plant traits by analysing their community‐weighted means individually. We estimated the short‐ and long‐term phenotypic diversity of burned plots based on sets of traits. We also tested if trait and species turnover are decoupled across post‐fire trajectories. Finally, we calculated phenotypic redundancy, and assessed if above‐ and below‐ground traits have contrasted responses during post‐fire community reassembly.Individually, 16 out of 23 traits were affected by fire in the short term. Plant phenotypic diversity (stdMPD) decreased immediately after fire, driven by changes in whole‐ and above‐ground traits. Both whole‐ and above‐ground stdMPD in burned plots described positive trajectories across the chronosequences tending to converge with long‐unburned plots, whereas below‐ground stdMPD remained unaltered through time.Taxonomic and phenotypic beta diversity showed decoupled trajectories due to a larger species than trait replacement across time since fire. Finally, overall phenotypic redundancy of the studied plant communities described a regressive trajectory, similarly to above‐ground traits, whereas root traits kept a steady phenotypic redundancy through time.Synthesis. We provide evidence that above‐ and below‐ground traits describe different recovery trajectories after fire, with significant effects on the phenotypic redundancy of plant communities. Our results encourage the use of multi‐trait approaches to understand how the plant reassembly operates after disturbance, in order to refine ecological theory. Seasonal foliage display (leaf phenology) is a key determinant of ecosystem function. Variation in land surface phenology, observed via space‐borne remote sensing, can be explained at broad spatial scales by climate, but we lack understanding of how vegetation structure and floristic diversity mediates these relationships. This lack of understanding hampers our ability to predict changes in phenology and therefore ecosystem function, in light of rapid ongoing shifts in biodiversity and ecosystem structure due to land use and climate change.We combined a network of 619 vegetation monitoring sites across seasonally dry tropical deciduous woodlands in Zambia with land surface phenology metrics to investigate the role of tree species diversity, composition and vegetation structure on patterns of land surface phenology, including the phenomenon of pre‐rain green‐up.Tree species diversity was associated with earlier pre‐rain green‐up, a longer growing season, and greater cumulative foliage production. Independent of diversity, proportional abundance of Detarioideae species (subfamily of Fabaceae) was associated with a longer growing season by facilitating earlier pre‐rain green‐up. Woodland stands with larger trees green up earlier, suggesting access to deep groundwater reserves. Senescence metrics showed variation among sites but were not well‐explained by precipitation, temperature, structure or diversity.Synthesis: Tree diversity, composition and structure are co‐determinants of seasonal patterns of foliage display in seasonally dry tropical deciduous woodlands, as measured via land surface phenology, at regional scale. Our study identifies both a niche complementarity effect whereby diverse woodlands exhibit longer growing seasons, as well as a mass‐ratio effect whereby detarioid species drive earlier pre‐rain green‐up, providing insights into the mechanisms underlying the biodiversity ecosystem function relationship in this biome. We stress the importance of considering biotic controls on ecosystem functioning in the next generation of earth‐system models predicting the response of communities to global change. Over the last decades, bee biodiversity has dropped sharply due to land use change, including urbanization. To contrast this, recent research has pointed to cities as a hotspot for bees. Because of this ambiguity, a scoping review has been conducted to examine the urban characteristics that impact bees and how bees are impacted. A total of 276 articles were analyzed against landscape and local habitat characteristics. The key findings include first that natural areas are more valuable for bees since biodiversity levels are higher. Second, urban areas generally score better than agricultural and rural areas. Third, plant biodiversity positively influences bee biodiversity. Fourth, the urban environment strongly affects some bee traits and the proportion of native bees. For making cities bee friendly and bee inclusive, we recommend to maintain natural areas, connect natural areas to urban ecosystems, encourage floral abundance and diversity and increasing the size of urban green areas overall. Summary: The diversity of plant–pollinator interactions is grounded in floral resources, with nectar considered one of the main floral rewards plants produce for pollinators. However, a global evaluation of the number of animal‐pollinated nectar‐producing angiosperms and their distribution world‐wide remains elusive.We compiled a thorough database encompassing 7621 plant species from 322 families to estimate the number and proportion of nectar‐producing angiosperms reliant on animal pollination. Through extensive sampling of plant communities, we also explored the interplay between nectar production, floral resource diversity, latitudinal and elevational gradients, contemporary climate, and environmental characteristics.Roughly 223 308 animal‐pollinated angiosperms are nectar‐producing, accounting for 74.4% of biotic‐pollinated species. Global distribution patterns of nectar‐producing plants reveal a distinct trend along latitudinal and altitudinal gradients, with increased proportions of plants producing nectar in high latitudes and altitudes. Conversely, tropical communities in warm and moist climates exhibit greater floral resource diversity and a lower proportion of nectar‐producing plants.These findings suggest that ecological trends driven by climate have fostered the diversification of floral resources in warmer and less seasonal climates, reducing the proportion of solely nectar‐producing plants. Summary: The primary mechanisms contributing to nitrogen (N) addition induced grassland biodiversity loss, namely light competition and soil cation toxicity, are often examined separately in various studies. However, their relative significance in governing biodiversity loss along N addition gradient remains unclear.We conducted a 4‐yr field experiment with five N addition rates (0, 2, 10, 20, and 50 g N m−2 yr−1) and performed a meta‐analysis using global data from 239 observations in N‐fertilized grassland ecosystems.Results from our field experiment and meta‐analysis indicate that both light competition and soil cation (e.g. Mn2+ and Al3+) toxicity contribute to plant diversity loss under N enrichment. The relative importance of these mechanisms varied with N enrichment intensity. Light competition played a more significant role in influencing species richness under low N addition (≤ 10 g m−2 yr−1), while cation toxicity became increasingly dominant in reducing biodiversity under high N addition (>10 g m−2 yr−1). Therefore, a transition from light competition to cation toxicity occurs with increasing N availability.These findings imply that the biodiversity loss along the N gradient is regulated by distinct mechanisms, necessitating the adoption of differential management strategies to mitigate diversity loss under varying intensities of N enrichment. Aim: The influence of species phylogenetic relatedness on the formation of insular assemblages remains understudied in functional island biogeography, especially for terrestrial habitat islands (i.e. distinct habitat patches embedded in a matrix that differ in the prevailing environmental conditions). Here, we tested three eco‐evolutionary hypotheses: (1) functional specialization of species (i.e. specialism) is associated with phylogenetic clustering at the habitat archipelago scale, (2) such clustering increases with insularity at the habitat island scale and (3) traits indicative of effective local persistence strategies shape island specialism. Location: Terrestrial habitat islands, Europe (Fens in the Western Carpathians, Outcrops in Moravia and Mountaintops in the Cantabrian Range). Taxon: Angiosperms. Methods: We assessed the phylogenetic relatedness of habitat specialists in three different archipelagos composed of terrestrial habitat islands based on phylogenetic signals and phylogenetic diversity (PD) measures. We estimated the effect of insularity on PD using linear models and the effect of persistence traits on specialism using phylogenetic logistic regressions. Results: Our hypotheses were largely not supported. Outcrop and mountaintop specialist assemblages did not exhibit any phylogenetic structuring, whereas fen specialists were clustered at the archipelago scale. Therefore, insularity seems not to act as a selective force for phylogenetic structure, and ecologically important persistence traits do not operate as precursors of specialism. Main Conclusions: Our results show that species phylogenetic relatedness plays a minor role in shaping habitat island specialist assemblages. Furthermore, the effects of phylogenetic relatedness on assemblages of island specialists are system and scale dependent. Finally, accounting for species' phylogenetic relatedness on persistence traits yielded results similar to previous studies, which corroborates the positive relationship between insularity and functional traits (indicative of enhanced plant persistence abilities with increasing within‐archipelago insularity). Aim: The distribution of birds among islands is thought to be regulated by island physical geography (i.e. island area, isolation and latitude). In contrast, work on continents indicates that bird diversity is often regulated by plant diversity. Consequently, the (statistical) direct and indirect effects of physical geography on island bird distribution are poorly understood. We investigated the relative roles of physical geography and vegetation in determining island bird diversity in the South West Pacific at two taxonomic scales of resolution: total bird diversity and bird diversity within functional guilds. Location: Eleven archipelagos in the South West Pacific. Taxon: Land birds. Methods: We created a dataset characterising total and functional guild diversity for land birds and seed plants (i.e. Spermatophytes) among archipelagos. We then used mediation analysis to disentangle the direct and indirect (i.e. mediated) effects of physical geography and vegetation on bird diversity. Results: On a broad taxonomic scale, total bird diversity was directly determined by total plant diversity, not the area, isolation or latitude of islands. On a fine taxonomic scale results differed between functional guilds. The diversity of herbivorous and frugivorous birds was directly determined by physical geography rather than plant total and trait diversity. Woody and herbaceous plant species diversity mediated the effect of physical geography on forest‐dwelling, above ground nesting and ground nesting bird diversity. Granivorous, nectarivorous and grassland‐dwelling bird diversities were unrelated to both physical geography and herbaceous plant diversity. Main Conclusions: Physical geography and vegetation can have both direct and indirect effects on island bird diversity. • South Africa ranks third in global flowering plant barcode data. • The country has submitted more than 12,000 DNA barcode records to BOLD. • Endemic families and taxa are underrepresented, leaving significant data gaps. • Underutilised resources and funding constraints hinder data growth in the region. • Urgent need for collaboration, targeted sampling, and database harmonisation. South Africa, a global biodiversity hotspot, faces escalating threats to its rich plant diversity, including habitat loss, climate change, invasive species, and illegal harvesting. These threats are further exacerbated by the country's taxonomic impediment, which hinders both conservation and sustainable development efforts. This paper assesses the efficiency of DNA barcoding as a tool for species identification and biodiversity conservation within the South African context. While DNA barcoding offers promising applications in conservation, significant gaps and challenges persist. We provide a comprehensive overview of plant barcoding initiatives in South Africa – by querying the public data portal for plant barcoding records, 12,456 published specimen records encompassing 159 families and ca. 3,449 species were returned. These numbers highlight historical progress, database contributions, technological advancements, and taxonomic coverage. Despite South Africa contributing the third-highest number of Magnoliophyta records to the Barcode of Life Data System (BOLD), significant gaps in endemic families and geographic regions highlight the urgent need for targeted DNA barcoding initiatives and increased collaboration, as only ca. 16 % of the known flora has been barcoded. The underutilisation of BOLD and financial constraints pose significant barriers to expanding plant barcoding records. However, advancements in sequencing technologies offer cost-effective solutions. We advocate for concerted efforts to enhance DNA barcoding utilisation, harmonise databases, and prioritise sampling of underrepresented taxa to effectively preserve South Africa's diverse plant life. • The first study on the diversity of plant species of locally protected forests patches in Inhambane Province, southern Mozambique. • Vepris myrei (Rutaceae) dominated a quadrat and it is simultaneously a near endemic and endangered tree species. • Dolichandrone alba (Bignoniaceae) dominated a quadrat and it is simultaneously a near endemic and vulnerable tree species. • Communities and their local heritage practices play a fundamental role in safeguarding plant diversity in non-officially protected forests. This study presents the vegetation composition of two forests, Chitanga and Mafai in Inhambane Province, Mozambique, which are protected by local communities. Plant diversity, forest structure and the existence of threatened plant species are assessed. This is the first biological study carried out in locally protected forests in Inhambane Province. Plant species were recorded in twelve 20 m × 20 m plots. A total of 952 plants from 151 species, 166 genera and 30 families were identified. 50 plant species occurred in both forests; 64 were only recorded in Chitanga; and 37 were unique to Mafai. In both forests, plant communities were dominated by the Fabaceae and Malvaceae families. Statistical analysis on the number of plants, genera, stand density, stand basal area, species richness, Shannon diversity, Inverse Simpson, and Piélou evenness indices shows that on average Chitanga is similar to Mafai. Both forests host near endemic and red listed plant species (Cissampelos hirta, Dolichandrone alba, Diospyros inhacaesis, Hyperacanthus microphyllus, Paropsia braunii, Synaptolepis oliveriana, and Vepris myrei). The study is significant in demonstrating the biological richness of locally protected forests. It illustrates how locally organised protection through customary laws plays an important role in the biodiversity and conservation status of non-formally protected areas. Inventories of other heritage forests in Inhambane province and Mozambique are recommended for the future firstly, as a means of providing botanical data and, secondly, as a means of supporting the formal adoption of heritage forest as conservation areas in a manner that does not alienate the communities safeguarding the forests. We assessed social preferences toward vertebrates, invertebrates, and plants in a biodiversity hotspot in Chile. We asked respondents (n = 662) to rank species based on their preferences and to select one subset to protect and another subset to remove. We identified four species clusters based on preferences: charismatic animals, plants, less popular animals, and animals that cause phobia/rejection. Preferences to protect were higher in the charismatic animal cluster, whereas preferences to remove were concentrated in the phobic cluster. Stakeholders with environmental occupations selected species to protect from the "less popular animals" and "animals causing phobia" clusters more often than other stakeholders, whereas society in general tended to select species from the "charismatic animals" cluster. Our results suggest that factors different from conservation priorities – like charisma – guide social preferences for biodiversity, and this needs to be considered when planning management actions. Alkaloids, a class of bioactive compounds widely diffused in plants, especially Chinese herbs, are used as functional ingredients, precursors, and lead compounds in food and clinical applications. Among them, aporphine alkaloids (AAs), as an important class of isoquinoline alkaloids, exert a strong anticancer effect on multiple cancer types. This review aims to comprehensively summarize the phytochemistry, pharmacokinetics, and bioavailability of seven subtypes of AAs and their derivatives from various plants and highlight their anticancer bioactivities and mechanisms of action. Spatio-ecological heterogeneity has a significant impact on various ecosystem properties, such as biodiversity patterns, variability in ecosystem resources, and species distributions. Given this perspective, remote sensing has gained widespread recognition as a powerful tool for assessing the spatial heterogeneity of ecosystems by analyzing the variability among different pixel values in both space and, potentially, time. Several measures of spatial heterogeneity have been proposed, broadly categorized into abundance-related measures (e.g., Shannon's H) and dispersion-related measures (e.g., Variance). A measure that integrates both abundance and distance information is the Rao's quadratic entropy (Rao's Q index), mainly used in ecology to measure plant diversity based on in-situ based functional traits. The question arises as to why one should use a complex measure that considers multiple dimensions and couples abundance and distance measurements instead of relying solely on simple dispersion-based measures of heterogeneity. This paper sheds light on the spatial version of the Rao's Q index, based on moving windows for its calculation, with a particular emphasis on its mathematical and statistical properties. The main objective is to theoretically demonstrate the strength of Rao's Q index in measuring heterogeneity, taking into account all its potential facets and applications, including (i) integrating multivariate data, (ii) applying differential weighting to pixels, and (iii) considering differential weighting of distances among pixel reflectance values in spectral space. The growing deforestation of tropical forests requires the implementation of restoration actions capable of assisting the recovery of biodiversity and the functioning of these ecosystems. This research aimed to identify the environmental factors that influence the abundance and diversity of woody plant recruitment in an Andean forest restoration project in Medellin (Colombia). Data from woody plant individuals taller than 80 cm were collected in 22 plots of 200·m−2. The environmental factors selected were edaphic variables, plantation structure, slope, elevation, prior land use, and landscape forest cover. Generalized linear models (GLM) were used to analyze recruitment densit and Linear Mixed Models (LMM) to assess recruited species richness, diversity, and dominance. Woody plant recruitment attributes in our study area were similar to those of secondary succession in an Andean forest, but planted trees contributed little to recruitment density and diversity. While recruitment density was affected by slope, canopy closure, and landscape forest cover, recruitment diversity was influenced by physical (bulk density) and chemical (pH, aluminum, Cation Exchange Capacity) edaphic factors, planted tree diversity (species richness and composition), canopy closure, and the mortality rate of planted trees. We conclude that sites with lower mortality rates of planted trees and denser canopies enhance both recruitment density and diversity, indicating a synergy between active restoration and passive regeneration processes. Transposable elements (TEs) significantly contribute to the evolution and diversity of plant genomes. In this study, we explored the roles of TEs in the genomes of Citrus and Citrus-related genera by constructing a pan-genome TE library from 20 published genomes of Citrus and Citrus-related accessions. Our results revealed an increase in TE content and the number of TE types compared to the original annotations, as well as a decrease in the content of unclassified TEs. The average length of TEs per assembly was approximately 194.23 Mb, representing 41.76% (Murraya paniculata) to 64.76% (Citrus gilletiana) of the genomes, with a mean value of 56.95%. A significant positive correlation was found between genome size and both the number of TE types and TE content. Consistent with the difference in mean whole-genome size (39.83 Mb) between Citrus and Citrus-related genera, Citrus genomes contained an average of 34.36 Mb more TE sequences than Citrus-related genomes. Analysis of the estimated insertion time and half-life of long terminal repeat retrotransposons (LTR-RTs) suggested that TE removal was not the primary factor contributing to the differences among genomes. These findings collectively indicate that TEs are the primary determinants of genome size and play a major role in shaping genome structures. Principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) of Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) identifiers revealed that the fragmented TEs were predominantly derived from ancestral genomes, while intact TEs were crucial in the recent evolutionary diversification of Citrus. Moreover, the presence or absence of intact TEs near the AdhE superfamily was closely associated with the bitterness trait in the Citrus species. Plant community succession can impact greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the soil by altering the soil carbon and nitrogen cycles. However, the effects of community landscape diversity on soil GHG emissions have rarely been fully understood. Therefore, this study investigated how plant landscape diversity, structure type, and species composition, affect soil GHG emissions in a riparian zone. Soil GHG emissions were assessed by measuring the air samples collected from four study sites, which have different plant community structure types and species compositions (natural sites with complex plants, landscaped sites with fruit trees and grasses, untended sites with ruderals, and farmland sites), using the static chamber method. Significant differences were observed in soil carbon dioxide (CO2; p < 0.001), nitrous oxide (N2O; p < 0.001), and methane (CH4; p = 0.005) emissions. The untended site with ruderals exhibited the highest CO2 emissions, while N2O emissions increased as plant community diversity decreased. All sites acted as sinks for CH4 emissions, with decreased CH4 uptake efficiency in more diverse plant communities. The Mantel test and variance partitioning analysis revealed soil microbial biomass as an indirect influencer of GHG emissions. Mountains exhibit a high degree of endemism and diversity, however, quantifying their biodiversity can be challenging. Similar to islands, species isolation in mountainous regions results in comparable patterns of evolution and extinction, rendering their biodiversity unique and highly susceptible to anthropogenic threats. The topographic relief in mountains plays a crucial role in creating habitat complexity, which in turn contribute to high plant diversity. Here, we investigated plant diversity in the volcano mountaintop vegetation on the Poços de Caldas Plateau, a region situated in the ecotone between the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado, characterized by natural radiation and significant anthropogenic intervention. We employed an automated approach through the filtering of georeferenced and non-georeferenced data to obtain a list of plant species in the region. Additionally, we statistically investigated the similarity among different high-altitude vegetations belonging to the campos de altitude from the Atlantic Forest and campos rupestres from the Cerrado. The plateau exhibits high plant diversity, including 1,659 specific and infraspecific taxa, especially belonging to Asteraceae and Poaceae. Our analyses suggest that geographical distance is a strong predictor of dissimilarity and that the Poços de Caldas Plateau is more floristically related to the campos rupestres, despite being associated with campos de altitude. The region possesses a unique set of biodiversity, indicating that it may be a distinct formation. Additionally, we hypothesize that Pleistocene events likely influenced the conformation of the current floristic composition in the region through species interchange between the Cerrado and Atlantic Forest. Throughout eastern North America, chronic white-tailed deer overbrowsing and widespread exotic plant invasions degrade native plant diversity and abundance. However, because deer densities are high across entire regions, it is challenging to find large areas where deer have been at low density for long periods. We predicted native plant diversity and abundance would be significantly higher during gap-phase regeneration where deer have been maintained at low densities (~ 7 deer/km²) compared to where deer have been chronically overabundant. Simultaneously, we predicted that exotic plant diversity and abundance would be lower in gaps where deer have been maintained at low versus high densities. We also evaluated whether deer density interacts with gap age, gap size, and gaps in dry versus more mesic forest patches. We studied 41 gaps throughout an 88 km2 fenced military post where deer were maintained near pre-European-settlement densities for 67 years and in nearby forests where deer have been overabundant for decades. Native species richness, diversity, and cover were 37–65% higher, and exotic species cover was 80% lower in canopy gaps at low relative to high deer density. Stem height and density of multiple native canopy tree species (e.g., two Quercus spp.) were 5-20-fold higher within canopy gaps at low deer density. Moreover, 10 native woody species were indicators of low deer density, including three Quercus species, whereas no native woody species were indicators of high deer density. Deer were the primary filter underlying these different patterns in diversity, abundance, and plant height. Our findings demonstrate that gaps develop a vigorous and diverse native sapling layer, with far fewer exotics, in areas of low deer density without a history of chronic overbrowsing. With the increase in deforestation associated with the need to reconcile conservation and food production, agricultural mosaics are of great importance in maintaining biodiversity. This study aimed to compare the shade-tolerant plants diversity partition pattern and the conservation value (CV) presented by land-use types found in three vertical strata (upper, middle, and lower) of six agricultural mosaics in the eastern Amazon. Additionally, we hypothesized that agricultural mosaics with lower forest cover, with lower heterogeneity of land-uses, and drier areas have lower shade-tolerant plants diversity, and CV of land-use types. Plant surveys were carried out in family farming mosaics with fixed plots; a matrix of species abundance per plot was set up for each mosaic and stratum. Additive partition and absolute contribution analyze were applied to each matrix; and CV of the land-uses for gamma richness was calculated. Factors were tested using generalized linear models and simple linear regression. Our results indicate that there is a diversity pattern that is repeated in the strata and agricultural mosaics. Beta diversity, especially among land-use types, is the one that most contributes to the diversity. Habitat heterogeneity is very important for the conservation of shade-tolerant species, but it is not the number of different land-use types but what these land-uses are. Land-uses with low CV do not add diversity to the mosaic. Consequently, the quality of the environmental matrix is very important. This study investigates within-site variation in the diversity and composition of aboveground vegetation and seed bank in intensively managed wet grasslands of north-western Germany, comparing field edges, field margins and field interiors. We tested the hypothesis that unfertilized buffer strips at field edges function as refugia of characteristic species even in grasslands that are managed intensively for silage production. In 55 grassland sites on each marsh and moor soils, respectively, we conducted vegetation surveys, seed bank analyses and soil chemical measurements in field edge, margin and interior plots, and searched for the factors causing within-site variation in vegetation composition. The total species pool was small at the 110 sites, i.e. 148 species in the aboveground vegetation and 107 species in the seed bank, demonstrating severe impoverishment. The α-diversity decreased from 23 species (median) per 200 m2 at the edge to 15 species in the interior, with 38 species occurring only at field edges. The number of species with conservation value was very low in aboveground vegetation and seed bank and was only slightly higher at the edge than in the interior. Soil P availability was ca. 30% lower at the unfertilized edges than in the interior. We conclude that unfertilized buffer strips at grassland edges may help reducing nutrient leaching from high-input grassland systems, but they have mostly lost their refugial function for phytodiversity after decades of intensive management. Restoration efforts with seed or green hay transfer from richer source habitats are needed to promote biodiversity in field-edge buffer strips. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite the growing popularity of nature tourism, we have limited systemic knowledge of how it affects nature, from both an abiotic and biotic perspective, and what these effects are in different regions, habitats or trail types. Here we propose a coordinated global experiment framework – GetDiv – for a comprehensive understanding of the effects of visitor's load on the vegetation of nature trails. For preliminary analysis we selected 20 trails in Estonia, and we show that plant diversity along the trails is negatively affected by visitoŕs load in both forest and open habitat. We present here the rationale for the methodological approach, and call for a coordinated global effort to collect comparable and comprehensive data of diverse aspects of nature trails, with a focus on plant diversity. Several recent regional studies have cast doubt on the widespread assumption that nitrogen‐fixing plants (N‐fixers) act as facilitators of neighbouring plant communities. We conducted a meta‐analysis to synthesize the effects of N‐fixers on plant communities and to understand how ecological context moderates these effects. We analysed studies that assessed paired effects of N‐fixers and non‐fixers on soil N, neighbouring‐plant (non‐fixer) biomass and plant community diversity; ecological moderators included climate, soil texture and N‐fixer growth form and invasive status. N‐fixers led to higher soil N and neighbouring‐plant biomass, but lower community diversity compared to non‐fixers. The effect of N‐fixers on neighbouring‐plant biomass was strongly mediated by soil texture; N‐fixer invasive status and growth form were also significant mediators of the facilitative effects of N‐fixers. Synthesis: N‐fixer effects lie on a continuum between facilitation and suppression that is moderated by intrinsic and extrinsic processes, and this analysis provides insight into how these factors moderate the effects of N‐fixers. Overall, N‐fixers facilitate neighbour biomass but suppress diversity, though high variation in these effects can be explained in part by ecological context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

\nHIGHLIGHTSThe chemical contents of the endemic Onosma malatyana roots collected from Malatya/Türkiye were determined using the hydrodistillation and the soxhlet methods and antimicrobial activity analysis of the extracts was also performed. The hydrodistillation method applied to the roots of O.malatyana resulted in identifying 31 compounds according to their retention times in GC-MS analysis. Additionally, crude ethyl acetate and crude oil etheric extracts of O.malatyana roots contained 14 compounds each. This research identified that the main component of the essential oil obtained by the hydrodistillation method was palmitic acid comprising 56.48% of the total composition. Additionally, in the crude petroleum etheric extract, oleic acid methyl ester (31.22%); and palmitic acid (24.69%) were identified as the main components in the crude ethyl acetate extract. The results of the antimicrobial activities indicated that O.malatyana root extracts were particularly effective against Gram-positive bacteria, specifically S. aureus and B. subtilis.The study, conducted for the first time, sheds detailed light on the chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of Onosma malatyana roots, highlighting the potential pharmacological importance of the plant.The research, carried out using hydrodistillation and Soxhlet extraction methods, emphasizes the chemical diversity of the plant by identifying various organic compounds, particularly prominent ones such as palmitic acid.Antimicrobial tests show strong inhibitory effects, especially against Gram-positive bacteria like S.aureus and B.subtilis. The South America Dry Diagonal (SADD) is the most extensive and continuous portion of dry vegetation on the continent, characterised by lower rainfall and a marked dry season. Epiphytes are very poorly known and understudied in this area, even though they represent a high proportion of plant diversity in South America. Here, we compiled a dataset of epiphyte records from the SADD. The compiled epiphyte records date from 1859 to 2021, covering all four SADD domains, four countries, and 24 ecoregions. We utilised two databases for life form classification: Epilist and Brazil Flora Group. Our dataset contains 41,039 records distributed among 1119 epiphyte and hemiepiphyte species belonging to three main groups: angiosperms, ferns, and lycophytes. The SADD domains host a high number of unique species in each domain, with the Cerrado and Caatinga regions serving as primary hosts for the majority of species in the SADD dataset. Despite notable differences in species composition among domains, the least significant differences were observed between the Caatinga and Cerrado, as well as between the Chaco and the Pantanal. Orchidaceae, Bromeliaceae, and Polypodiaceae families exhibited the highest species diversity within the region. However, the species containing the highest number of specimens collected varied considerably among the domains. Herein, we also outlined some inconsistencies in the life-form classification across taxonomic bases, acknowledging the challenges of categorising epiphyte species while considering their intraspecific life-form variation. Background: Numerous previous studies have investigated the effects of grazing or mowing on plant community diversity and productivity in grasslands; however, few have deliberately made sound comparison between the effects of paralleled grazing and mowing in terms of biomass removal on plant community diversity and productivity in semi-arid grasslands. Using a 4-year field manipulative experiment, we investigated how moderate intensity of domestic cattle (Bos taurus) grazing and mowing can affect plant community diversity and productivity in the semi-arid grassland in northeastern China, with the attempt to find a better management practice. Results: Our results showed that grazing significantly increased plant species richness by 9% but did not change plant biomass, whereas mowing did not alter plant species richness but significantly reduced total plant biomass and root biomass by 18% and 12%, respectively, and significantly altered plant community composition, reflected by 32% increase of grass to forb biomass ratio. Conclusions: Cattle grazing exerted a neutral effect on plant biomass and a positive effect on plant species richness, suggesting that cattle grazing is a better management practice compared to the paralleled mowing, but longer-term experiments are needed to explore the lasting influences of grazing vs. mowing on grassland productivity, plant diversity and the sustainability. The Shandong Peninsula, the largest peninsula in China, is situated at the estuary of the Yellow River and is bordered by both the Bohai Sea and the Yellow Sea. This region is renowned for its rich plant diversity. However, the historical origins of these plant species remain poorly understood. This study analyzed 2410 shared species from 865 genera and 161 families distributed across Shandong and its nine adjacent regions to investigate the floristic diversity of the Shandong Peninsula. These regions were considered as operational taxonomic units (OTUs), with the shared species serving as the basis for each OTU. Hierarchical cluster analyses were performed to assess their floristic similarity, employing the Bray-Curtis distance algorithm and the UPGMA clustering method. The results revealed that the ten regions were grouped into three clusters, delineated by the Yellow River. Notably, the floristic similarity of the Shandong Peninsula was found to be more closely aligned with regions south of the Yellow River, despite Shandong historical connection to Liaoning in the north. These findings underscore the barrier effect of the Yellow River and provide insights into the formation of biotic diversity patterns between northern and eastern China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Plant communities are complex systems shaped by a combination of deterministic and stochastic ecological processes. Bryophytes are an essential component of plant diversity in natural ecosystems, yet our understanding of their community ecology needs to catch up to that of other organisms. The unique geological history, alpine climatic conditions, and high habitat heterogeneity of Tibet provide suitable areas for bryophytes to survive in the alpine regions. Therefore, field surveys were conducted across 184 plots in forest, thicket, and herbaceous vegetation of Tibet to investigate the role of deterministic processes such as biological interactions and abiotic effects, along with stochastic processes, in shaping the distribution of bryophyte assemblages. We employed various analytical methods, including mixed effects models, partial least squares path modeling, null model analysis, and neutral community models. The study showed that bryophyte richness was highest in forests. Bryophyte assemblages showed greater segregation in forest and thicket environments compared to herbaceous vegetation. As the influence of stochastic processes increased, that of deterministic processes decreased from forests through thickets to herbaceous vegetation. Deterministic processes were the main driving forces for the bryophyte assemblage pattern. Soil properties and climatic factors, particularly pH played a key role in determining bryophyte patterns in Tibet. This study has deepened our comprehension of how deterministic and stochastic ecological processes interplay and shape bryophyte distribution patterns in Tibet. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
