The appeal of things is that they insinuate a degree of stability, durability, firmness, and a degree of certainty in times of uncertainty. Unlike objects (Gegenstände), things are there even if we—humans who perceive, surround, use them—are not. The article draws on Heidegger's 1950 essay "The Thing," which uses the example of a jug, to reflect on Kleist's things. Kleist's things are not stable, not durable, and not a ground of certainty for the fickle mind. Nor are they merely fragile and transient. Rather, Kleist's things are simultaneously both stable and fragile, durable and transient, certain and uncertain. Kleist's writings show how the liminality of things extends into the social realm where things are recognized as a potential resource: as the singular, different, and surprising element that resists, that can change, but that also makes possible the general, the rule, the law. Focusing in particular on the broken jug in Kleist's famous comedy by the same name, the article argues that Kleist finds in things an alternative to Kant's "thing in itself" and to the Romantic absolute (as something Unbedingtes). Counter to the search for certainty and stable grounds advocated by some of the new materialists, Kleist's episteme works toward a thinking that responds and recalls the uncertainty of things and with it their singularity and generative force. Music for voice holds a special place in the opus of Serbian composer Jug Marković. In all of his pieces, Marković maintains a type of care for the vocal part that distinguishes him in the context of Serbian art music, and, at the same time, puts him on the international map of contemporary composers who work with voice in non-traditional ways. This is reflected in his intention to diversify performing techniques and vocal styles, in the detailed instructions regarding technique and scenic gesture, and in the use of technological means in vocal performance and manipulation of sound. In this paper, I investigate the expansion of vocal and bodily expression via performing techniques and new technologies, and address the issues of autonomy, agency, and responsibility of composer and vocal performer, in order to determine the characteristics and different factors of eclecticism in Marković’s vocal music. The alcoholic extract of Iranian oak (Quercus persica Jaub. & Spach) fruit at a final concentration of 0.25% (w/v) was added to cheese-making milk, and some physicochemical, sensory, and microbial properties of Jug cheese were evaluated during 60 days of storage at 4°C. The results showed significantly higher Total Polyphenol Content (TPC), antioxidant activity, and lower acidity for the samples containing the oak extract (T1) compared to the control (T0). At the beginning of the storage time, T1 showed the highest values of TPC (128.83±0.467 mg GAE g-1) and antioxidant activity (97.12±0.095) for DPPH (2,2-DiPhenyl-1-PicrylHydrazyl) radical scavenging activity. The antioxidant activity decreased significantly during the storage period. The flavor, aroma, and overall acceptability scores were higher for T1 than for T0. Short-chain fatty acids content of the cheese varied during the storage period, but no significant change was observed in the content of long chain fatty acids. The amount of butyric, caproic, caprylic, capric, lauric, myristic, palmitic, oleic (trans) and linoleic (cis) fatty acids in T1 were significantly higher than in T0. No significant changes in these fatty acids concentrations were observed during storage period. Total microbial count, Coliforms, mold and yeast were significantly lower in the T1 than in T0. Therefore, the Iranian oak extract as a source of antioxidant and antimicrobial polyphenolic compounds could potentially improve the quality and shelf life of Jug cheese without adversely affecting its sensory and physicochemical properties. The Egyptian material distributed throughout Greece includes important quantities of bronze objects that reveal information about consumption and trade and are complicated by issues that differ from those relating to faïence (also distributed throughout Greece). For this reason, the bronze objects give to us a complementary view of the relations between Greece and Egypt during the first centuries of the 1st millennium BCE. Three groups of objects will be discussed: bronze jugs with a lotiform handle, bronze figurines and statuettes (mostly from the Heraion of Samos), and two Egyptian mirrors from Samos and Perachora, respectively. This study highlights the issues of bias that could be introduced by inconsistencies in archaeological documentation but ultimately reveals the parallels between the usage and distribution of this type of material in Greece and Egyptian cultural practices of the 1st millennium BCE. Bademağacı Höyük is located 52 km from Antalya on the Antalya-Burdur highway. The new communities that came to the region around 2700 BCE must have chosen this old settlement area, which at that time had become a flat mound / höyük. The settlement of this period, which can be called a town or even a city, is in the shape of an elongated oval or almond that reflects the shape of the mound. The settlement of this period was probably the centre of a 'Local Principality' ruled by a dominant ruler or elite class, and this principality would also have controlled the surrounding area. During the Early Bronze Age II period the settlement megaron-like structures were arranged adjacent to one another in a row on the outermost circle. These houses, which were undoubtedly inhabited, closely resemble each other with only small differences in plan. With the exception of one row of houses on each of the eastern and western sides, building density is low in this half of the mound. In contrast, the southern half of the town has a high building density and most of the buildings are generally in very good condition, which suggests this was probably a neighbourhood inhabited by the elite. In this area there are megarons on the outer ring, and a storage building consisting of rows of adjacent rooms in the inner section. A building complex with an intricate plan uncovered during the excavations in this area indicates the general layout of the Bademağacı EBA II settlement, which was surrounded by rows of adjacent houses, was pre-planned and demonstrates a deliberate attempt to provide protection for the central area. Seventeen rooms of this multi-roomed building thought to have been built for the rulers of the society or palace complex have now been excavated. Among the pottery finds from the EBA II / 3-1 settlement period at Bademağacı, there is a group of several complete vessels that have been studied in detail. This pottery tradition has a rich and sophisticated form repertoire, which reflects a continuation from old to new in terms of the pottery production characteristics and techniques (the paste, shaping of the forms, firing and surface treatments). A large amount of pottery was found in almost all parts of the settlement, and the quality and variety of this pottery differed according to the location of the building within the city. In the megarons of the northern neighbourhood, where the ordinary people are thought to have lived, there were fewer high-quality pottery forms in good condition when compared to the number found in other parts of the settlement. The pottery vessels recovered from around fifty megarons in the settlement that are thought to have been used as residences and from the special buildings or storage rooms, are of the type and variety used to carry out various daily life activities. With the exception of a silver bowl found in the southern neighbourhood of the town, no metal vessels were found. However, the vertical reliefs resembling orange slices on the body sections of some the jug forms and the shape of the neck and rim of some of the beak spouted jugs suggest that these vessels were based on original metal equivalents. While excavations at Bademağacı were still in progress, we identified eight ware groups from the pottery assemblage of the EBA II settlement. Most of the Bademağacı beak spouted jugs are from the Ware 1 pottery group. Beak spouted jugs were also found in the Ware 2, Ware 3, Ware 4 Ware 5 and Ware 6 groups. The examples from Ware 3 and Ware 4 are a very high quality and display careful workmanship. The Ware 4 beak spouted jugs are especially striking and the quality of the paste, the fine rims of the jugs, the standard of the firing and the well burnished glossy surfaces would suggest these could be an imitation of metal jugs. Bademağacı has yielded 186 examples of beak spouted jugs, one of the most common forms among the EBA II pottery. This number makes up approximately 23% of all the pottery material examined and 93% of all the jugs. Most of the beak spouted jugs uncovered in the excavations are whole or almost complete. We have divided this jug repertoire into main form groups and subtypes according to their varying form features. Differences such as the pointed or splayed / shallow spouts of the jugs, the spherical or squat bodies, rounded or flat bases made these distinctions necessary. It is clear that the Bademağacı beak spouted jugs are not dissimilar to the common pottery forms and practices that were fashionable in the Aegean World during the EBA. In this context, it can be assumed that the similarity between the beak spouted jug groups found at Western Anatolian settlements emerged as a result of direct or indirect relations between the centres in the region. Arsenic contamination of drinking water is a serious threat to the health of hundreds of millions of people worldwide. In the United States ~3 million individuals drink well water that contains arsenic levels above the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 10 μg/L. Several technologies are available to remove arsenic from well water including anion exchange, adsorptive media and reverse osmosis. In addition, bottled water is an alternative to drinking well water contaminated with arsenic. However, there are several drawbacks associated with these approaches including relatively high cost and, in the case of bottled water, the generation of plastic waste. In this study, we tested the ability of five tabletop water pitcher filters to remove arsenic from drinking water. We report that only one tabletop water pitcher filter tested, ZeroWater®, reduced the arsenic concentration, both As 3+ and As 5+ , from 1000 μg/L to < 3 μg/L, well below the MCL. Moreover, the amount of total dissolved solids or competing ions did not affect the ability of the ZeroWater® filter to remove arsenic below the MCL. Thus, the ZeroWater® pitcher filter is a cost effective and short-term solution to remove arsenic from drinking water and its use reduces plastic waste associated with bottled water. Subsurface irrigation has been achieved by using ceramic emitters, pitchers, pots and ceramic tubes, which have gained a certain degree of interest in arid regions due to their efficient use of water. Research on the formation of wetting patterns around the ceramic emitter is essential for the design of irrigation system. In this study, numerical simulations were carried out to investigate the effects of emitter installation method, emitter buried depth, emitter structural parameters, irrigation doses and initial soil water content on the wetting patterns in clay loam with Hydrus-2D. Finally, two field application experiments were conducted to test the practicality and reliability of simulation results. The simulation results were in good agreement with the experimental data. Results showed, emitter installation method had the least effect on the wetting pattern. A 25 cm buried depth would be suit for irrigating vegetables, a 45 cm deep buried depth would suit for irrigating fruit trees. The structure parameters had a significant effect on cumulative fluxes and horizontal wetting front, the structural parameters (emitter length is 7.00 cm, emitter external diameter is 1.25 cm, and emitter inner diameter is 0.60 cm) would be a better fabricate parameters for ceramic emitter. Wetting front increased with increasing irrigation doses and initial water content. To prevent percolation, when the initial water content was high, it should be better to cut down the irrigation duration of ceramic emitter. The field results indicated that Hydrus-2D could be used to investigate the suitable parameters for ceramic emitter in subsurface irrigation systems and determine the suitable arrangement and operation mode of ceramic emitter. The wells have great importance for discovering the functions of buildings to which they belong. The pottery finds both from use fills and abandonment debris of wells also reveal very important data for pottery chronology and typology. The three wells uncovered in the HBT sector at Clazomenae provided a great number of pottery finds from the 4th century. Most of them are water jugs clearly connected with the function of the wells. The remaining pottery assemblages consist of a few black glazed drinking cups and some household wares for different services other than water jugs. The first two of the three wells in the HBT Sector at Clazomenae, Well 1 and Well 2, probably opened for the service of industrial installations in the 6th century. Both wells were closed with the abandonment of the Clazomenian mainland in the beginning of the 5th century. Well 1 does not seem to have served as a water supply in the 4th century. However, Well 2 was in use during the first half of the 4th century before closing within the second quarter. Well 3, which was dug in a courtyard of a residential building dated to the second quarter of the 4th century, went into use in the second quarter and it lost its function as a water supply around the middle of the century. The pottery from the three wells under discussion can help us understand the ceramic culture of the first half of the 4th century; it also serves as the main criterion for dating the fills in the wells. The material presented in this article comes from the early medieval settlement from Grădina (Grădina commune, Constanţa County), located in the centre of Dobrudja, and is the result of surface investigations. The settlement is in situated at the outskirts of Grădina village, in "Caraci" section, located approximately 2 km north-east from the exit to Cogealac, near "Turk's Well". Here, on the right bank of Mucova stream, on an area of about 160 m2, annual farming works brought to surface many signs of habitation from the specified period, consisting of pottery, various objects used in current activities, pieces of coated clay and burned adobe (partially vitrified). Together with these materials, we also studied several ceramic fragments of jars, a rim fragment of a clay boiler and a spindle whorl, part of the collection of the school in Grădina; we were informed these items were also found in the abovementioned settlement. In total, 418 pottery fragments were collected: 345oxidant burned and 73 reductant burned. From the first category, 299 were made of common clay, 22 of kaolin and 24 of clean fine clay. The pots made of common clay were made at the slow wheel, except a fragment that comes from the top of a pot. Regarding typology, the best represented type is the pot without handles, with bevelled or round rim, rarely grooved, with short or high neck. One fragment comes from the neck of a jar and another one seems to come from a bowl. The vessels were made of common paste and all decorated by incision. Sometimes the inside of the lip is also decorated. Kaolin pots were made at the fast (three) and slow wheel. The most frequent type is the pot with or without handles, with rounded rim, more or less turned outwards, and short neck. Clay boilers are also well represented. Kaolin pots were also decorated by incision. Pots without handles and pitchers are modelled from clean clay. Such pottery items were decorated by polishing sometimes combined with incised patterns. The pots modelled from clean clay burned reducting show shades of gray-brown to black, and the core can be brown or gray. Such fragments come from pots with rounded lip and straight neck, and from jugs. Reducing burned vessels were decorated by polishing technique, sometimes associated with horizontal grooves. Along with pottery, at this point we also collected a clay roundel, a spindle whorl, a weight, a piece of partially vitrified adobe and three pieces of coated clay. Benefitting from materials found only at surface investigations, we turned to analogies of pieces found in well defined archaeological contexts in order to date the settlement at Grădina. Based on these analogies and on the observations made, we think that the early medieval settlement from Grădina dates to the 10th century - the first decades of the 11th century. The article discusses the four unpublished inscriptions in Corpus of Cypriot syllabic script in the British Museum (BM). It says that the last surviving part of the inscription on the left of the mastos cup, which is excavated by the BM Turner Bequest expedition to Kourion led by H. B. Walters of the Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities in 1895, is incised on a broken fragment. It adds that the inscription in the jug, which is a part of the 53 antiquities bought by the BM from vice-consul Thomas Sandwith was consists of three signs of the Cypriot syllabary. Moreover, the inscriptions in the limestone tablet purchased from the collection of Palma di Cesnola and London financier Sir Edwin Lawrence was comprised of two lines with just one legible sign.

Abstract: The thermal transformations of a calcareous clay were investigated at 800–1000°C by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The shrinkage and water absorption values were measured. The sintering process became effective >900°C, and only plagioclase as crystalline phase was formed. This limited neoformation was in agreement with the CaO–SiO2–Al2O3 equilibrium diagram. Based on the Atterberg limits, the drying parameters, and the water permeability of the ceramic samples, the clay was considered suitable for manufacturing irrigation pitchers. The article offers information on the Gorham's Rebekah Pitcher designed and produced by Gorham Manufacturing Co. in the Providence, Rhode Island. It says that the pitcher was bought by banker Lewis Whiteman of Cincinnati, Ohio as a commemoration gift for the marriage of his daughter, Lousia to physician William Carson. It explores the design of the said pitcher which evolves in the story of Rebekah. It adds that the design in the pitcher is tied to the establishment of the Degree of Rebekah.

The article is devoted to the publication and analysis of a fragmentary bronze jug found in 1872 during excavation of a barrow near Streletskaya Bay, on the estate of Colonel K. I. Shverin, the only known burial-mound in the necropolis of Chersonesos Taurike. A detailed analysis of the jug fragments, primarily its handle, and of the parallels for it give grounds for dating the bronze jug from the Shverin burial-mound within a broad period from the late 6th century to the mid-5th century BC. Much more complicated is the question as to the place of its manufacture, given the fact that most of the parallels discussed originate from the North Pontic region (Ulyap Barrrow No. 1/1981; the hoard from Peschanoe). Most probably both the jugs from the Ulyap and Shverin burial-mounds may be given a preliminary attribution as items from a Corinthian workshop. The proposed dating of the bronze jug from the Shverin burial-mound does not necessarily mean that the barrow should also be dated to the same period. We are aware of examples of long use for rare imported bronze vessels in the North Pontic region. Yet the possibility that the Shverin burial-mound was erected later than the 4th century BC seems slight. Most probably, given the dating of this find - the only one from the barrow, it should be dated within a broad framework of the 5th or first half of the 4th century BC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study presents an analysis of various aspects relat- ing to the changes in cooking vessels during the Iron Age in Philistia and the southern Levant, with particular em- phasis on the morphology, manufacturing technology, and regional distribution of cookingjugs. We have combined archaeological data and petrographic analyses to evaluate the technological aspects of these vessels. It is argued that cookingjugs, while first appearing in Philistia, subsequent- ly spread to other regions and cultures. The relationship of this process of dissemination to other factors, such as economic and social changes in the southern Levant, is discussed, and it is argued that the possible incorporation of Philistine cooking practices into the neighboring Iron Age cultures may have implications for understanding the multifaceted, ifat times ambiguous, relationships between the Philistines and their neighbors.* [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

I used data on handedness and pitching and hitting performance in annual cohorts of professional baseball players (1957-2005) to test the hypothesis that handedness among pitchers was subject to negative frequency-dependent selection. As predicted by this hypothesis, right-handed pitchers were more successful (i.e., opposing batters hit more poorly against them) when they were relatively rare in the population. Contrary to the predictions of this hypothesis, however, left-handed pitchers were more successful when they were relatively common. Both right- and left-handed batters performed better in years dominated by right-handed pitchers, despite the fact that right-handed batters perform relatively poorly against right-handed pitchers. I suggest that batters form cognitive representations based on pitcher handedness, and that these representations are strengthened by repeated exposure or priming. When the pitcher handedness polymorphism is more balanced (e.g., 67% right-handed, 33% left-handed), these cognitive representations are less effective, which leads to decreased batting averages and improved performance by all pitchers. Furthermore, these cognitive representations are likely to be more critical to the success of right-handed hitters, who have reduced visuomotor skills relative to left-handed hitters. This paper proposes that selling can be viewed as essentially a social, interactional accomplishment, not an economic one. A corpus of audio-visual recordings of `pitchers' - market traders who attempt to sell their goods with a sales `spiel' - is analysed. We locate a number of rhetorical formats and interactional practices (selling techniques') regularly used by pitchers to manage sales. We show how bargains are oonstituted and enhanced through a contrast between the `worth' and the selling prices of the goods offered for sale. A number of resources used by pitchers to produce mass sales are also documented. Some analytical consideration is given to the manner in which pitchers strategically exploit intersubjectively held social conventions (`economic' reasoning) in order to intervene in the purchasing decisions of audience members to elicit sales. The article presents discussion of the water-drawing techniques of the Iron Age well at Tel Beth-Shemesh in the Sorek Valley, Israel and the experimental archaeology methods used to discover them. Comments are given introducing the scholastic challenge of reproducing behaviors from archaeological observation. Details are given describing the potsherd remains of pinch-mouthed jugs found at the site. The excavation team's trial-and-error method of reproducing and attempting water-drawing is then described.

The article focuses on the stoneware jug in Bennington Museum with inscription that contradicts a middle nineteenth-century attitude toward alcohol consumption in the U.S. It questions how the phrase "In Vino Veritas" was in the jug that was manufactured in time of temperance craze.
