Advanced finite element (FE) modeling and simulations were performed on vehicular crashes into a three-bar metal bridge rail (TMBR). The FE models of a sedan, a pickup truck, and a TMBR section were adopted in the crash simulations subject to Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH) Test Level 2 (TL-2) and Test Level 3 (TL-3) requirements. The test vehicle models were first validated using full-scale physical crash tests conducted on a two-bar metal bridge using a sedan and a pickup truck with similar overall physical properties and sizes to their respective vehicles used in the simulations. The validated vehicular models were then used to evaluate the crash performance of the TMBR using MASH evaluation criteria for structural adequacy, occupant risk, and post-impact trajectory. The TMBR met all MASH TL-2 requirements but failed to meet the MASH TL-3 Criteria H and N requirements when impacted by the sedan. The TMBR was also evaluated under in-service conditions (behind a 1.52 m wide sidewalk) and impacted by the sedan under MASH TL-3 conditions. The simulation results showed that the TMBR behind a sidewalk met all safety requirements except for the occupant impact velocity in the longitudinal direction, which exceeded the MASH limit by 3.93%. Concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns have been widely used in multi-story and high-rise frame structures. During the service period, they may suffer vehicle impact due to traffic accidents or terrorist attacks. This paper numerically evaluates the performance of CFST columns under vehicle impact and investigates the effects of carbon FRP (CFRP) wrapping arrangements on performance improvement of the columns. Before that, a numerical model was developed to simulate the responses of CFST columns without and with FRP wrapping under vehicle impact and post-impact axial compression, and then calibrated by reported tests. Evaluation results show that the performance of CSFT columns under vehicle impact is divided into five levels, i.e., no repair required, rapid repair required, minor repair needed, major repair needed, and replacement needed. The performance level decreases with the increase in the vehicle weight or speed and increases with the increase in the column diameter or steel tube thickness. The column height has little effects on the performance level. A higher axial load ratio, e.g., 0.5, might reduce the performance level. Besides, a CFST column tends to fail in flexure mode when hit by F800 medium truck, while it may fail in flexure & shear mode when hit by C2500 pickup truck. Investigation results indicate that FRP wrapping with each layer orientation of 90° (i.e., in the longitudinal direction) and 0° (i.e., in the hoop direction) present the best performance improvement for a CFST column possibly undergoing flexure & shear and flexure failure, respectively. The increase of the number of FRP layers effectively improves the performance levels of CFST columns but the excessive demand may be not economical. This paper investigates the factors influencing the severity of driver injuries in single-vehicle speeding-related crashes, by comparing different driver age groups. This study employed a random threshold random parameter hierarchical ordered probit model and analysed crash data from Thailand between 2012 and 2017. The findings showed that young drivers face a heightened fatality risk when speeding in passenger cars or pickup trucks, hinting at the role of inexperience and risk-taking behaviours. Old drivers exhibit an increased fatality risk when speeding, especially in rainy conditions, on flush median roads, and during evening peak hours, attributed to reduced reaction times and vulnerability to adverse weather. Both young and elderly drivers face escalated fatality risks when speeding on road segments lacking guardrails during adverse weather, with older drivers being particularly vulnerable in rainy conditions. All age groups show an elevated fatality risk when speeding on barrier median roads, underscoring the significant role of speeding, which increases crash impact and limits margins of error and manoeuvrability, thereby highlighting the need for safety measures focusing on driver behaviour. These findings underscore the critical imperative for interventions addressing not only driver conduct but also road infrastructure, collectively striving to curtail the severity of speeding-related crashes. Geo-mat system is considered as an alternative to a flexible or rigid pavement that can be used for fire lanes, parking areas, or roadway shoulders for cars, pickup trucks, utility/delivery trucks, and fire trucks. Also, it can be used to reduce the thickness of the base course in unpaved roads. In this investigation, six cyclic loading tests were conducted to assess the efficacy of the geo-mat system on weak to intermediate subgrade layers, characterized by California Bearing Ratios (CBR) of 2%, 3%, and 4%. Control sections, consisting of a 300-mm thick base course over subgrade layers with CBR values of 2% or 4%, were compared against the test sections comprising a geo-mat system placed atop aggregates of varied thickness (150 or 50 mm) on a geotextile layer over the same subgrade layers. Each test section underwent cyclic loading, progressively increasing from 17.8 to 71.2 kN using a 300-mm diameter steel plate. The results demonstrate that the geo-mat system, particularly when placed over a 150 mm-thick aggregate base, exhibited comparable or superior performance to the control sections with a 300 mm thickness, especially under substantial cyclic loading. This was evidenced by the reduced permanent deformations beneath the loading plate and a wider load distribution. The increase of the subgrade CBR value reduced the permanent deformation significantly. When the intermediate subgrade with a 4% CBR was used, the geo-mat system played a more important role than the aggregate base and the base thickness had a minor effect on the performance. This paper investigates the failure mechanism of the rear drive shaft in a modified pickup truck which had operated for about 3000 km. The investigation included macroscopic and microscopic evaluation to document the morphologies of the fracture surface, measurement of the material composition, metallographic preparation and examination, mechanical testing, and finite element modelling and calculations. The results obtained suggest that rotation-bending fatigue was the primary cause of the drive shaft failure. The crack initiation is located in the root of the machined threads on the drive shaft surface and expanded along the side of the machining line surface. The main cause of fatigue cracks is attributable to a high stress concentration owing to a large unilateral bending impact under overload. Meanwhile, the bidirectional torsional force also produces a higher stress concentration and thus accelerates the fatigue crack to expand radially along the surface. Furthermore, the hardness of the central section of the drive shaft was marginally below standard. This deficiency results in harm to the bearings and other mechanical components, as well as expediting the enlargement of cracks. Finite element analysis revealed significant contact stress between the bearing and drive shaft, with stress levels exceeding the fatigue limit stress of the parent material. Until now, various studies have been conducted on the drag coefficient of pickup trucks, but little research has been conducted on the effect of the front overhang length and roof design on the drag coefficient. In this study, the flow characteristics and drag coefficients of 54 models with different front overhang lengths, roof angles, and angular positions were compared using a computational fluid dynamics code to reduce the drag coefficient of an eco-friendly pickup truck. Reducing the aerodynamic drag of electric vehicles can improve battery utilization and improve the overall performance of the powertrain, so it is important to analyze and optimize geometric design steps to improve drag reduction strategies. The three-dimensional steady-state analysis model used in this study was verified by comparing the model results with experimental values reported in previous studies. In addition, the impacts of four factors on the drag coefficient were analyzed to develop an optimal design that takes into account smaller and better characteristics. The drag coefficient was reduced by 10.3% compared to that of the base model. Based on the numerical analysis of all models to be applied to pickup truck design, a correlation of the drag coefficient with the shape was proposed, showing a low error range of +1.9% to −1.74%. The transport sector is under scrutiny because of its significant greenhouse gas emissions. Essential strategies, particularly the adoption of zero- and low-emission vehicles powered by electricity, are crucial for mitigating emissions in road transport. Pickups, which are integral to Mexico's fleet, contribute to such emissions. Thus, implementing effective policies targeting pickups is vital for reducing air pollution and aligning with Mexico's decarbonization objectives. This paper presents a simulation model based on system dynamics to represent the adoption process of zero- and low-emission vehicles, with a focus on pickups and utilizing data from the Mexican case. Three policy evaluation scenarios are proposed based on the simulation model: business as usual; disincentives for zero- and low-emission vehicles; and incentives for unconventional vehicles. One of the most significant findings from this study is that even in a scenario with a greater number of vehicles in circulation, if the technology is fully electric, the environmental impact in terms of emissions is lower. Additionally, a comprehensive sensitivity analysis spanning a wide spectrum is undertaken through an extensive computational process, yielding multiple policy scenarios. The analysis indicates that to achieve a maximal reduction in the country's emissions, promoting solely hybrid electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles is advisable, whereas internal combustion engines, vehicular natural gas, and battery electric vehicles should be discouraged. High collision rates on horizontal curves compared with other roadway elements make them one of the most critical elements in a transportation network and thus good candidates for new studies, especially of the stability of a vehicle driving on a horizontal curve. In this regard, spiral transition curves as facilities to enter horizontal alignments are very important. While the superelevation changes in these curves have always been linear, the aim of this study was to evaluate non-linearity in the superelevation attainment function (SAF). Various scenarios were used in order to cover different situations. As a simulation tool, the CarSim software package was used to model three kinds of passenger cars (sport utility vehicle, utility truck and sedan). In addition, 16 types of spiral–curve–spiral road plans for three different conditions of road slope, six types of warping in the SAF and two types of functional speed were examined (a total of 1728 scenarios). The results showed that non-linearity might produce better results than other proposed methods; for example, it was found that a parabolic function reduced the lateral acceleration rate by over 50% for high superelevation and design speed. Raco is a local wind occurring in central Chile where the Maipo River Canyon exits into the Santiago valley. The intensification of the easterly down-canyon flow starts at any time during some cold season nights, accompanied by increases in temperature and drops in humidity. The hypothesis of the raco being a gap wind controlled by the narrowest section in the 12-km canyon exit corridor is tested with data from two events in July 2018 and July 2019. The data are analyzed in the framework of hydraulic theory, and a subcritical-to-supercritical transition is documented to occur at the narrows of the gap where the Froude number is close to unity, confirmed by radiosondes launched in the narrows in 2019. For the raco flow, the sum of potential and kinetic energy is conserved upstream of the narrows, while the acceleration occurring farther downstream loses a large fraction of energy to frictional dissipation. The raco events occur under the influence of regional subsidence, but a differential nocturnal warming of the in-canyon air mass is responsible for a pressure gradient driving the raco. In the 2019 case, a ceilometer mounted on an instrumented pickup truck documented the structure and movement of the interface between the raco air and the cold-air pool (CAP) existing over the valley to the west. Together with a radiosonde launched near the CAP–raco surface front, the observations reveal the intense shear-driven mixing taking place at the interface and the factors supporting the establishment of a stationary front. Camera surveillance systems can record urban waterlogging processes. Objects with regular shapes and fixed sizes captured by the camera can be utilized to calculate urban waterlogging depths based on geometric principles. In this study, we propose a machine learning‐based method to measure urban waterlogging depths using wheels and traffic buckets captured in video images as reference objects. This method is validated through laboratory experiments and observed data. The results demonstrate that: (1) the urban waterlogging depths calculated using urban reference objects show high consistency with the observed water level data; (2) in the laboratory scenario, the probability of error within 3 cm for measurements based on the hub, tire, and traffic bucket are 99.07%, 99.38%, and 81.55%, respectively; (3) in the real‐world scenario, the probability of error within 3 cm for measurements based on car hubs and pickup truck hubs are 97.30% and 95.14%, respectively. In conclusion, urban waterlogging depths can be accurately measured using reference objects with regular shapes. The proposed method can help obtain waterlogging data with higher temporal and spatial resolution at lower economic costs, which is of great significance for urban flood control. Purpose: This paper aims to investigate the effect of fatigue behaviour on fracture in the 4th gear (helical gear) of a pick-up truck. Design/methodology/approach: Fracture on the failed helical gear is characterised through metallographic and fractographic analyses. Mechanical testing and finite element simulation are employed to assess the factors contributing to the gear failure. Findings: The microstructure observed in the case layer was martensite, leading to a hard and brittle surface due to carburising. Failure initiated at the crack origins and then propagated to the instant fracture zone in the core of the gear tooth. Multiple crack origins accelerated the development of ratchet marks, attributed to the high intensity of stress exerted on the workpiece and ultimately leading to a substantial final overload zone. Hardness decreased with increasing depth of the gear surface due to the effects of carburising and hardening treatments. Stress was initiated from the contact stress on the gear tooth surface and transformed into bending stress along the central axis of the gear. The contact stresses became critical when the torque surpassed the contact strength of the material. Research limitations/implications: Simulation samples must be experimentally validated to improve the results. Practical implications: Metallographic and fractographic analyses are crucial in elucidating the wear mechanisms in mechanical components. Additionally, finite element analysis can indicate the influence of stress on the mechanical part, providing insights that can effectively guide the limiting transmission power to ensure extended service life. Originality/value: Cost reduction, time for analysis, and finding the root causes of the problem should be conducted to improve the implementation process, leading to high product quality. In this article, we compile a new data set of firms in the Thai automotive industry and discuss the localisation of both automotive parts suppliers and assemblers in Thailand. We first review the factors affecting the development and location of the Thai automotive industry and examine how Thailand came up with the strategy to promote one-ton pickup trucks as the first 'product champion'. We argue that the government played a significant role in creating a 'sizable' domestic market and building the essential infrastructure, resulting in the promotion of dynamic growth and a vibrant productive capacity. Then, applying Duraton and Overman's continuous approach, this paper examines the localisation of automotive firms. Using the spatial distribution of manufacturing establishments as a benchmark, this study finds that all categories of parts suppliers were significantly localised. Moreover, it is revealed that statistically significant localisation takes place only within 150 kilometers with respect to the bilateral distances between suppliers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
