Purpose: To analyze the available evidence and assess the effect of different implant coatings on healing outcomes. Materials and Methods: Using the PICOS strategy, a structured question was formed. A protocol was agreed upon and registered with PROSPERO (no. CRD42022321926). The MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Scopus, Web of Science, Pubmed, and ScienceDirect databases were searched using a structured strategy. Study selection was independently carried out in duplicate, first by title and abstract, then by full-text assessment. Quality and risk of bias were independently assessed in duplicate using AMSTAR 2 and ROBIS. Data extraction was independently undertaken in duplicate using a predefined extraction form. Results: The search yielded 11 systematic reviews for inclusion. The most commonly assessed coatings were based on calcium phosphate--including hydroxyapatite (HA), brushite, and bioabsorbable nano-HA--followed by bisphosphonate, then bioactive glass coatings. Included reviews most frequently assessed marginal bone loss (MBL), bone-to-implant contact (BIC), and survival/success rates. There was considerable heterogeneity and small sample sizes. The quality assessment suggested low confidence in the reviews and high risk of bias. Conclusions: The included reviews provide weak evidence that implant coatings improve osseointegration and reduce MBL following implant placement. There was weak evidence for progressive complications for calcium phosphate coatings. Further research and long-term multicenter controlled clinical trials with improved standardization and control of bias are required to better understand the effects of coating implants. PURPOSE: To describe the use of anti-osteoclastic medications (i.e., bisphosphonates and receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa beta (RANK) ligand inhibitors) in treating choroidal osteoma. METHODS: A 42-year-old male with bilateral posterior choroidal osteomas showed extensive outer retinal atrophy in the right eye secondary to decalcification of a choroidal osteoma and progressive extension of retinal pigment epithelial atrophy in the left eye encroaching on the macula with subtle changes in the choroidal osteoma. Bisphosphonates (i.e., oral alendronate 70 mg weekly) or RANK ligand inhibitors (i.e., subcutaneous denosumab 60 mg every six months) were initiated to prevent calcium resorption. RESULTS: After the introduction of more directed therapy, there was stabilization of the patients condition over the next nine years while under bisphosphonate treatment, followed by a switch to RANK ligand inhibitor therapy and later bisphosphonate treatment again. This was made evident through stability in fundus photography, enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography, and B-scan ultrasonography regarding outer retinal layers thickness, and choroidal osteoma thickness and calcification. CONCLUSION: Anti-osteoclastic therapy using bisphosphonates or RANK ligand inhibitors could be a new treatment paradigm to prevent resorption of choroidal osteomas and prevent the subsequent atrophy of outer retinal layers. SUMMARY STATEMENT: A patient with bilateral posterior choroidal osteomas was treated with bisphosphonates and RANK ligand inhibitors to prevent osteoma resorption in the better-seeing left eye. This has led to stability over six years of outer retinal layers thickness, choroidal osteoma thickness, and choroidal osteoma calcification.

The potential connection between exposure to glyphosate and glyphosate-based herbicides (GBHs) and breast cancer risk is a topic of research that is rapidly gaining the publics attention due to the conflicting reports surrounding glyphosates potential carcinogenicity. In this review, we synthesize the current published biomedical literature works that have explored associations of glyphosate, its metabolite, aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA), and GBHs with breast cancer risk in humans and human cell-based models. Using PubMed as our search engine, we identified a total of 14 articles that were included in this review. In the four human studies, urinary glyphosate and/or AMPA were associated with breast cancer risk, endocrine disruption, oxidative stress biomarkers, and changes in DNA methylation patterns. Among most of the 10 human cell-based studies, glyphosate exhibited endocrine disruption, induced altered gene expression, increased DNA damage, and altered cell viability, while GBHs were more cytotoxic than glyphosate alone. In summary, numerous studies have shown glyphosate, AMPA, and GBHs to have potential carcinogenic, cytotoxic, or endocrine-disruptive properties. However, more human studies need to be conducted in order for more definitive and supported conclusions to be made on their potential effects on breast cancer risk.

Background: This study analyzed the FDA's Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) data to investigate the correlation between oral bisphosphonates (BPs) and oesophageal adverse events (AEs). Methods: We systematically extracted data on adverse reactions to oral alendronate, risedronate, and ibandronate from the FAERS database, covering the period from the 2004 Q1 to the 2023 Q4. The role_code of AEs mainly includes primary suspect (PS), secondary suspect (SS), concomitant (C), and interaction (I). This study targeted reports with a role_code of "PS." According to the FDA deduplication rule, the latest FDA_DT is selected when the CASEID is the same, and the higher PRIMARYID is selected when the CASEID and FDA_DT are the same. Our analysis leveraged four statistical methods, including the reporting odds ratio (ROR), proportional reporting ratio (PRR), Bayesian confidence propagation neural network (BCPNN), and the multi-item gamma Poisson shrinker (MGPS), to assess the relationship between oral bisphosphonates and oesophageal AEs. The Kaplan-Meier method was utilized to evaluate the cumulative incidence of oesophageal toxicity, while the log-rank test examined the temporal onset profiles of these toxicities. Additionally, the Pearson chi-squared test was employed to identify any significant differences in mortality and hospitalization rates associated with the oesophageal AEs caused by these medications. Results: The FAERS database had 41,590 AE reports for oral BPs, with 3,497 (8.41%) related to oesophageal AEs. Our findings indicate that oral BPs are disproportionately associated with an increased incidence of gastrointestinal system AEs at the system organ class (SOC) level. The adverse events identified at the preferred terms (PTs) level encompassed conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, oesophagitis, and oesophageal pain. A significant divergence in the cumulative incidence of oesophageal AEs was observed among patients treated with the three different oral bisphosphonates, as confirmed by the log-rank test (p < 0.0001). Hospitalization rates varied significantly among patients receiving different BPs (p < 0.05), but no significant difference in mortality rates was found. Conclusion: The study establishes a significant link between oral BPs and oesophageal toxicity, highlighting the need for further research into the mechanisms of BP-induced oesophageal toxicity and potential preventive measures. A base-catalyzed O-phosphorylation of aldehyde/ketone with RP-menthyl phenylphosphinate afforded phosphonates. The mechanism was proposed as an intermolecular SN@P reaction of α-hydroxy phosphinate. In an intermediate, the C–P bond was transferred from the equatorial to axial position via Berry pseudorotation, and then was cleaved with the leaving of a carbon anion. Background: The interplay between breast cancer treatment and osteoporosis has important consequences for anticancer therapy and patient bone health. Many breast cancer therapies involve hormonal treatments that lower estrogen levels, which can lead to an increased risk of osteoporosis due to reduced bone mineral density. Aromatase inhibitors, chemotherapy, and surgeries such as oophorectomy can further aggravate bone loss, highlighting the necessity of prioritizing bone health during cancer treatment. Objective: This review is aimed at investigating the complex relationship between breast cancer therapies and bone health by examining the molecular and cellular mechanisms through which anticancer treatments lead to bone loss. It also seeks to assess the effects of various treatment options, such as selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) and bisphosphonates, on reducing bone loss and maintaining bone health during cancer therapy. Method: The review explores the mechanisms underlying bone loss in breast cancer patients undergoing treatment, focusing on factors such as estrogen depletion, inflammatory cytokines, and changes in bone remodelling processes. Additionally, it evaluates the efficacy of different therapeutic interventions, including pharmacological treatments like bisphosphonates and third‐generation SERMs, in mitigating bone‐related side effects. Results: The findings indicate a critical need to balance the effectiveness of breast cancer treatments with the preservation of bone health. Pharmacological treatments like bisphosphonates and denosumab have been identified as essential for managing bone health in breast cancer patients. Breast cancer (BC) bone metastasis poses a significant clinical challenge due to its impact on patient prognosis and quality of life. Curcumin (CUR), a natural polyphenol compound found in turmeric, has shown potential in cancer therapy due to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticancer properties. However, its metabolic instability and hydrophobicity have hindered its clinical applications, leading to a short plasma half-life, poor absorption, and low bioavailability. To enhance the drug-like properties of CUR, nanotechnology-based delivery strategies have been employed, utilizing polymeric, lipidic, and inorganic nanoparticles (NPs). These approaches have effectively overcome CUR's inherent limitations by enhancing its stability and cellular bioavailability both in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, targeting molecules with high selectivity towards bone metastasized breast cancer cells can be used for site specific delivery of curcumin. Alendronate (ALN), a bone-seeking bisphosphonate, is one such moiety with high selectivity towards bone and thus can be effectively used for targeted delivery of curcumin loaded nanocarriers. This review will detail the process of bone metastasis in BC, elucidate the mechanism of action of CUR, and assess the efficacy of nanotechnology-based strategies for CUR delivery. The aim of the study was to explore the clinical efficacy of bisphosphonates in patients with osteoporosis in diabetes patients by meta-analysis. Six databases were systematically searched from inception to January 30,2023. Studies evaluating the treatment of diabetic osteoporosis with bisphosphonates were included. Key outcome measures, such as bone mineral density (BMD), bone metabolism markers, pain improvement, and safety assessments, were extracted and analyzed. STATA MP V17.0 was used to calculate the combined effect size. After searching Chinese and English databases, 15 studies met the inclusion criteria of this study. The results of the meta-analysis showed that the BMD of patients with osteoporosis in diabetes increased significantly after bisphosphonate treatment, and the lumbar BMD increased by 0.08 g/cm² (95% CI: 0.05–0.11). Femoral neck BMD increased by 0.06 g/cm² (95% CI: 0.01–0.11); Ward's triangle BMD increased 0.07 g/cm² (95% CI: 0.04–0.09); and trochanter BMD increased by 0.06 g/cm² (95% CI: 0.04–0.08). In addition, bone alkaline phosphatase increased 1.95 μg/l (95% CI: 1.18–2.72), while serum tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase-5b decreased 1.28 U/l (95% CI: –1.81–0.75). Moreover, improvements in pain were statistically significant. The effects of bisphosphonates on osteocalcin (MD: –0.07; 95% CI: –1.12–1.25), serum calcium (MD: 0.01; 95% CI: –0.03–0.04), serum phosphorus (MD: 0.04; 95% CI: –0.03–0.10) and medication safety (OR: 1.75; 95% CI: 1.29–2.37) were not statistically significant. Background: Osteoporosis and vertebral fractures (VFs) are frequently observed in males living with HIV (MLWH). While bisphosphonates seem effective on bone mineral density (BMD) in MLWH, data on VFs are lacking. In this real-life longitudinal study performed on 118 MLWH (median age 53) who were followed-up for a median of 7 years, we aimed to evaluate the long-term efficacy of oral bisphosphonates on VFs in MLWH. Methods: The inclusion criteria were age >18, stable HIV infection, bisphosphonate-naïve, blood samples from the same laboratory, and three densitometries and morphometries performed with the same densitometer. Results: At baseline, VFs were detected in 29/118 patients (24.6%). Patients with VFs were older (p. 0.042), had longer HIV infection duration (p. 0.046) and antiretroviral exposure (p. 0.025), and demonstrated higher luteinizing hormone levels (LH, p. 0.044). Of the 29 patients with VFs at inclusion, 11 developed new VFs, of which 8 were under oral bisphosphonates (p. 0.018). Among the 89 without basal VFs, 11 developed VFs, of which 2 were under oral bisphosphonates. Patients with a worsened bone condition (regarding BMD and/or new VFs, n. 32) had more frequently high LH levels (>9.4 mIU/mL, p. 0.046) and higher HCV co-infection compared to patients with a stable bone condition (p. 0.045). It should be noted that 38.6% of patients discontinued oral bisphosphonates due to medical indication or personal choice, and 14.0% never started them. Conclusions: In conclusion, we found that oral bisphosphonates were not completely effective in preventing VFs, especially in patients with VFs at baseline; this is probably due to the multifactorial pathogenesis of fragility fractures in this population. Many phytopathogens' gene products that contribute to plant–pathogen interactions remain unexplored. In one of the most harmful phytopathogenic bacterium Pectobacterium atrosepticum (Pba), phosphonate-related genes have been previously shown to be among the most upregulated following host plant colonization. However, phosphonates, compounds characterized by a carbon–phosphorus bond in their composition, have not been described in Pectobacterium species and other phytopathogenic bacteria, with the exception of Pseudomonas syringae and Pantoea ananatis. Our study aimed to determine whether Pba synthesizes extracellular phosphonates and, if so, to analyze their physiological functions. We demonstrated that Pba produces two types of extracellular phosphonates: 2-diethoxyphosphorylethanamine and phenylphosphonic acid. Notably, such structures have not been previously described among natural phosphonates. The production of Pba phosphonates was shown to be positively regulated by quorum sensing and in the presence of pectic compounds. Pba phosphonates were found to have a positive effect on Pba stress resistance and a negative effect on Pba virulence. The discovered Pba phosphonates are discussed as metabolites that enable Pba to control its "harmful properties", thereby maintaining its ecological niche (the host plant) in a relatively functional state for an extended period. Summary: People with prior lean mass loss had a ~ 10% higher risk of MOF and ~ 22–26% higher risk of hip fracture, and the results were similar in people on anti-osteoporosis medications. Loss of lean mass is associated with increased fracture risk. Patients should be encouraged to pursue strategies to prevent loss of lean mass. Background: Sarcopenia increases fracture risk. If the risk persists after starting osteoporosis medication, patients may need to be encouraged to pursue strategies to prevent loss of lean mass. Objective: To estimate the effects of loss in appendicular lean mass (ALM) or total body lean mass (TBLM) on subsequent fracture risk and effect modification with anti-osteoporosis medication use. Methods: We conducted a registry-based cohort study linked to population-based data. We identified individuals ≥ 40 years of age with two DXA assessments ≥ 1 year apart and minimum 0.5 years of observation. ALM and TBLM were estimated from weight, sex, and percent fat from DXA (R2 = 0.91 and 0.84 vs total body DXA, respectively). We report hazard ratios (HR) from Cox regression models estimating time to first incident major osteoporotic fracture (MOF) and hip fracture, adjusted for fracture risk; osteoporosis medication was included as an interaction term and used to stratify analyses. Results: We included 21,249 individuals (mean 67 [SD 10] years, 95% female, 37% on osteoporosis medication). The mean follow-up was 7 years (SD 4). A total of 1868 and 548 people had incident MOF and hip fracture, respectively. People with prior ALM loss (HR per SD 1.09, 95% CI 1.04–1.15) or TBLM loss (HR per SD 1.09, 95% CI 1.42–1.14) had a higher risk of MOF. Hip fracture risk was greater in people with prior ALM loss (HR per SD 1.22, 95% CI 1.12–1.33) and TBLM loss (HR per SD 1.26, 95% CI 1.16–1.38). There were no interactions with anti-osteoporosis medication use (all p > 0.3). When restricted to people on anti-osteoporosis medication, each SD in ALM or TBLM loss was associated with 8–9% increased MOF risk and 18–23% increased hip fracture risk. Conclusions: Loss of lean mass is associated with increased fracture risk among individuals on anti-osteoporosis medication. Patients should be encouraged to pursue strategies to prevent sarcopenia. Osteoporosis is a metabolic bone disorder for which treatment options include antiresorptive therapies (e.g., bisphosphonates, denosumab); anabolics (e.g., teriparatide, abaloparatide); and dual mechanisms (e.g., romosozumab). Management of osteoporosis with concurrent antiresorptive and anabolic agents may be superior to monotherapy, as demonstrated in the DATA trial with the combination of denosumab and teriparatide. However, there is limited experience with the combination of denosumab and romosozumab, which may be an alternative antiresorptive/anabolic regimen for individuals who are not candidates for PTH receptor agonists. In this case, we present a young man with glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis who could not tolerate a daily injectable anabolic and who experienced improvement in bone mineral density with concurrent denosumab and off-label romosozumab administration. Purpose: This study evaluates sex differences and predictors of anti-osteoporosis medication (AOM) use following a hip fracture, with a focus on older men who exhibit higher mortality rates post-fracture compared to women over the age of 65. Methods: Participants included 151 men and 161 women aged 65 and older with hip fractures. The outcome, AOM use, was assessed at baseline (≤ 22 days of hospitalization) and at 2, 6, and 12 months post-hip fracture. Generalized estimating equations (GEE) modeled sex differences and predictors of AOM use during the year post-fracture in 255 participants with complete baseline data and ≥ 1 follow-up observation. Results: Of the 312 participants, only 53 used AOM at baseline, and 35 initiated use during follow-up. In the unadjusted GEE model, AOM use was significantly less likely in men (OR = 0.42; 95% CI, 0.22–0.78) compared to women. For both men and women, baseline use of AOM was a significant predictor (OR = 28.3; 95% CI, 5.4–148.0 vs. 41.6; 95% CI, 14.0–123.0). The other significant predictors by sex were osteoporosis diagnosis (OR = 3.19; 95% CI, 1.16–8.77) and minimal alcohol use (OR = 3.26; 95% CI, 1.34–7.94) for women versus age (OR = 1.09; 95% CI, 1.01–1.18) for men. Conclusion: In older adults with hip fractures, AOM use is low over the year post-fracture and men are less likely to report AOM use compared to women which has implications for important sex differences in predictors of use. Objectives: Previous evidence suggests that bisphosphonates (BPs) may lower the risk of recurrent fractures and enhance functional recovery in patients with fractures. However, there has been controversy regarding the optimal timing of treatment initiation for patients with fragility fractures. We conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the available evidence on the use of BPs during the perioperative period and compared it to both non-perioperative periods and non-usage. Methods: Electronic searches were performed using PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science and the Cochrane Library published before February 2023, without any language restrictions. The primary outcomes included fracture healing rate, healing time, and new fractures. We also examined a wide range of secondary outcomes. Random effects meta-analysis was used. Results: A total of 19 clinical trials involving 2543 patients were included in this meta-analysis. When comparing patients with non-perioperative BPs use in 4-6 weeks and approximately 10-12 weeks post-surgically, the overall risk ratios (RRs) of perioperative BPs use for healing rate were 1.06 (95% CI: 0.81, 1.38, p=0.69) and 1.02 (95% CI: 0.94, 1.11, p=0.65), respectively, suggesting no difference in healing rate between perioperative and non-perioperative BP initiation. For healing time, the overall mean difference between perioperative and non-perioperative periods was -0.19 week (95% CI: -1.03, 0.64, p=0.65) at approximately 10-12 weeks, indicating no significant impact of perioperative BP initiation on healing time. In terms of new fractures, the overall RR with BP use was 0.35 (95% CI: 0.17-0.73, p=0.005), when compared to patients without BPs use. This suggests a protective impact of BP use against new fractures compared to patients without BP use. Perioperative BP use was associated with a markedly higher likelihood of having adverse experiences, including fever (RR: 23.78, 95% CI: 8.29, 68.21, p< 0.001), arthralgia (RR: 10.20, 95% CI: 2.41, 43.16, p=0.002), and myalgia (RR: 9.42, 95% CI: 2.54, 34.87, p< 0.001), compared with non-BPs use. Conclusions: Treatment with BP during the perioperative period does not affect the healing process and has positive effects on therapy for patients with fragility fractures. Context Prolonged bisphosphonate (BP) treatment for osteoporosis prevents hip and other fractures but causes atypical femoral fractures (AFF). Objective To establish the relationship between patterns of BP use and the risk of AFF and hip fractures. Other potential risk factors for AFF were also examined. Methods This population-based case-cohort study utilized data from the Danish National Healthcare system, including longitudinal records of medication use, healthcare utilization, and x-ray images. Among all 1.9 million Danish adults ≥50, those with subtrochanteric or femoral shaft fractures between 2010 and 2015 (n = 4973) were identified and compared to a random sample (n = 37 021). Bisphosphonate use was collected from 1995-2015. Fracture radiographs (n = 4769) were reviewed by blinded study radiologists to identify AFFs (n = 189) using established criteria. Traditional hip fractures in the random sample (n = 691) were identified by ICD-10. Results Compared to <1 year of BP use, 5 to 7 years of use was associated with a 7-fold increase in AFF (adjusted HR = 7.29 [CI: 3.07, 17.30]); the risk of AFF fell quickly after discontinuation. The 5-year number needed to harm for one AFF was 1424, while the 5-year number needed to treat to prevent one hip fracture was 56. Glucocorticoid and proton pump inhibitor use were independently associated with increased AFF risk. Thirty-one percent of those with AFF had no BP exposure. Conclusion The risk of AFF increases with duration of BP use but the beneficial effects of BP therapy in adults ≥50 dramatically exceed this increased risk. Objective: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw bones (MRONJ) is a well-known complication of antiresorptive and antiangiogenic drugs. Since the first report, more occurrences of MRONJ have been described worldwide. Dental extraction has been described by many studies as one of the risk factors for MRONJ. Comprehensive dental care (CDC) is a preventive dental method provided to patients prior to drug commencement. This study aims to determine the association between CDC and MRONJ. Patients and methods. A retrospective analysis was performed on 75 medical records of patients on antiresorptive and/or antiangiogenic drugs between February 2018 and May 2021. Demographics and clinical and radiographic data were collected. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to determine the factors associated with MRONJ. Results: Of the 75 patients who met the inclusion criteria, 11 (14.7%) developed MRONJ. Three out of 11 patients (27.2%) developed MRONJ spontaneously, while eight patients (72.8%) developed it after trauma from dentures or dental extractions. Following a binary logistic regression analysis, the lack of CDC was identified as a significant predictor of MRONJ. Patients who did not receive CDC had an odds ratio of 8.64 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.27–58.62, p = 0.03). However, dental extraction did not show a statistically significant association with MRONJ in both the univariate and multivariate analyses. Conclusion: CDC before treatment with antiresorptive and antiangiogenic drugs is a potentially effective preventive method for reducing MRONJ. SAPHO syndrome, a rare inflammatory disorder of bone, joints, and skin, is named based on the presence of synovitis, acne, pustulosis, hyperostosis, and osteitis. The hallmark of SAPHO syndrome includes osteoarticular and dermatologic manifestations, however, rarer associations with inflammatory bowel disease (particularly Crohn's disease) have been documented. The literature on the relationship between SAPHO syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), especially ulcerative colitis (UC), remains limited. We report an unusual case of SAPHO syndrome in a patient with UC. Chest x‐ray and MRI showed enlargement of the right first rib and adjacent sternum. Bone scintigraphy revealed hyperostosis and ankylosis of the costochondral junction, and bone biopsy revealed reactive bone and costal cartilage without findings of infection or malignancy. Complete resolution of symptoms was achieved 4 months after starting zoledronic acid without significant adverse events. The diagnosis of SAPHO syndrome in IBD patients is rare, even more so in UC patients, likely attributable to underdiagnosis given the clinical heterogeneity of SAPHO syndrome and overlap with the extra‐intestinal manifestation of IBD. Summary: We found that a standardized order set after hip fracture increased initiation of anti-osteoporosis medication and increased persistence at 1 year, but did not reduce secondary fractures. Background: A treatment gap exists after osteoporosis-related fractures. Introducing standardized care can improve treatment. We evaluated the impact of a hip fracture order set (OS) on anti-osteoporosis medication (AOM) initiation, persistence, and secondary fracture prevention. Methods: In 2015, one hospital in Manitoba, Canada, introduced a hip fracture OS including recommendations for the initiation of AOM (OS group). A control group was identified from the other hospitals in the same region. A retrospective cohort study was conducted using linked administrative health data. All individuals 50 + years with surgical treatment for low-energy hip fracture between 2010 and 2019 were included and followed for AOM initiation, medication persistence at 1 year, and secondary fractures. Between-group differences for each year were assessed using chi-square tests. Logistic regression models tested the impact of socio-demographic and clinical factors on initiation, persistence of AOM. Cox regression tested the risk of secondary fracture. Results: No baseline differences between OS group (813 patients) and control group (2150 patients) were observed in demographics, socioeconomic factors, or comorbidities. An increase in post-fracture AOM initiation was seen with OS introduction (OS group year before 16.7% versus year after 48.6%, p < 0.001). No change was seen in the control group. Persistence on AOM also increased (OS group year before 17.7% versus year after 28.4%, p < 0.001). No difference in secondary fractures was observed (OS group 19.8% versus control group 18.8%, p = 0.38). Conclusion: Introduction of a hip fracture OS significantly increased AOM initiation and persistence at 1-year post-fracture. There was no significant difference in secondary fractures. An approach to the synthesis of phosphoryl substituted spiro-1,3-dioxolane oxindoles was developed from the base-catalyzed reaction of various isatins with (3-hydroxyprop-1-yn-1-yl)phosphonates. It was found that various aryl-substituted and N-functionalized isatins with the formation of appropriate products with high yields and stereoselectivity when using t-BuOLi are able to react. Chronic nonbacterial osteitis (CNO) is a rare auto-inflammatory bone disease affecting children and adults. Adult CNO is characterized by painful bone lesions, primarily of the anterior chest wall. There is no approved therapy for adult CNO. Current off-label treatments include intravenous bisphosphonates, which have been shown to alleviate pain through decreasing bone turnover. However, no adequately powered randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have been conducted. This double-blind, placebo-controlled RCT investigates the efficacy of intravenous pamidronate to decrease bone pain in adult CNO patients. Recruiting at the Dutch national referral center for CNO, adult patients with persistent bone pain despite non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or optionally other standard-of-care treatments are randomized to receive two courses of intravenous pamidronate (at 0 and 3 mo, 30 mg daily, on 3 consecutive d) or placebo. From 6 mo onwards, all patients receive open-label pamidronate for another two courses. The primary outcome is change in score for maximum pain from 0 to 6 mo. Secondary outcomes include change in quantitative intralesional bone turnover as measured on sodium-fluoride positron emission computed tomography ([18F]NaF-PET/CT), inflammation markers, shoulder function, general health, quality of life, fatigue, physical, and work activity. For manufacturers and users of detergents and cleaning agents, the focus of their efforts is on efficiency in use while at the same time ensuring environmental compatibility and thus protecting our natural resources. Phosphonic acids and their salts have been an indispensable component of such formulations in many cases for several decades but are considered to be difficult to biodegrade and are therefore subject to critical assessment with regard to their environmental behaviour. Current research work is looking at the various pathways of the natural degradation of these substances and shows that phosphonates are both completely degraded abiotically and biologically metabolized as a sole source of phosphorous. The microorganisms capable of doing this are ubiquitous and require an adaptation time of a few days. The conditions under which rapid biodegradation of phosphonates is observed are surprisingly simple and only require the maintenance of an adapted nutrient supply necessary for growth. These findings are groundbreaking for a critical evaluation of the ecological testing standards currently in use and provide further arguments for a holistic view on natural degradation processes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate pre- and post-fracture medical management of osteoporosis among patients who underwent surgical fixation of femoral neck fractures (FNF) and vertebral compression fractures (VCF), and to investigate if there is a difference in treatment, management, and subsequent fractures between FNF and VCF patients. Patients who underwent surgical fixation of FNF or VCF were retrospectively reviewed at a minimum 1 year follow up. Patients were excluded if their fracture was caused by high energy trauma or malignancy, <50 years-old, deceased, or lost to follow up. Patient demographics such as age, sex, BMI, American Society of Anesthesiology Physical Status Classification System and Charleston Comorbidity index were recorded. Management of osteoporosis, including medication regimen and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scans were assessed preoperatively and at minimum one year follow up. Subsequent fractures were also recorded. In the analysis of 370 patients (74.7% FNF, 25.2% VCF), demographics showed a predominantly female population (mean age 78.1). Preoperatively, 21.6% were diagnosed with osteoporosis, consistent between FNF and VCF. Postoperatively, there were no significant differences in new osteoporosis diagnoses, bisphosphonate use, or subsequent fractures. VCF patients, however, were more likely to receive denosumab and post-operative DEXA scans (p < 0.05). Within a year, 6.2% experienced subsequent fractures, with no significant FNF-VCF difference. Only 12.7% received appropriate post-operative osteoporosis treatment, 27.1% had DEXA scans, and 25% had a recorded osteoporosis diagnosis. Multivariable analysis highlighted pre-fracture osteoporosis diagnosis as the sole predictor for post-operative DEXA scans and anti-osteoporotic medication (p < 0.001). This study suggests that factors beyond the type of fragility fracture may influence subsequent fracture risk and anti-osteoporotic medication administration in elderly patients. Previous studies assessed the effect of extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) for knee osteoarthritis (OA) among different situations. Thus, results from a meta-analysis regarding this topic may not be reliable due to heterogeneity. A systematic review was conducted on three internet databases, namely Cochrane Library, PubMed, and Embase, gathering pertinent papers from their establishment to March 2024. The search phrases were as follows: "shockwave" OR "shock wave" OR "extracorporeal shockwave" OR "Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy [MeSH Term]" AND "knee" AND ("osteoarthritis" OR "arthritis" OR "arthritic" OR "osteoarthritis [MeSH term]"). Twenty-four articles (n = 888) were included, with the resulting conclusions demonstrating that ESWT was effective for knee OA compared with sham ESWT; however, ESWT was not effective for patients with severe knee OA. Patients receiving higher energy or higher shock number had significant improvement than those receiving lower energy or less shock number, respectively. Adding ESWT in isokinetic muscular strengthening exercises (IMSE) was more effective than IMSE alone. The efficacy of ESWT was better than other therapies, including intravenously applied prostacyclin and bisphosphonate, corticosteroid injection, kinesiotherapy, hyaluronic acid injection, platelet-rich plasma injection, and physiotherapy. This review demonstrated that ESWT was effective for knee OA. Higher energy and more shock numbers could obtain better efficacy. ESWT could be used as a replacement for some other therapies. Objectives: To assess the number of new cases of Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (MRONJ) among patients with osteoporosis and other non-malignant bone diseases in Northwestern Italy between 2007 and 2022. Methods: MRONJ cases were collected from referral centers in a population of 4.5 million. We analysed the number of new MRONJ cases per year, type of disease, administered drugs, duration of therapy (when available), and onset time of disease. Results: We analysed 198 cases (out of 1071 total MRONJ cases); diseases included osteoporosis (87%), rheumatoid arthritis (5%), their association (4%), Paget's disease, and other various diseases (4%). Patients received bisphosphonates alone (74%), or denosumab alone (6%), or a sequence of different drugs (20%). The number of new cases increased over five years from 2 (2003–2007) to 51 (2008–2012), 65 (2013–2017), and 79 (2018–2022), and the percentage increased from 1% to 14%, 20%, and 29% of the total cases. Conclusions: The number of new MRONJ cases per year among patients with non-malignant diseases is rapidly increasing all around the world, though underestimation cannot be excluded. In this study, we describe epidemiological and clinical characteristics of patients, and the drug most frequently involved in MRONJ cases in our region over a long period, allowing a comprehensive view of the progression of the disease. Greater collaboration among specialists is needed for correct and early diagnosis to improve measures potentially reducing disease incidence and to limit quality of life deterioration in patients with osteoporosis and other non-malignant diseases. The new microporous metal organic framework [La2(H2O)5(H2TPPE)]·3H2O (CAU‐54), is obtained in a hydrothermal reaction of the linker 1,1,2,2‐tetrakis(4′‐phosphonophenyl)ethylene (H8TPPE) and La3+ ions. The extensive characterization including temperature‐dependent crystal structures and spectroscopic properties allowed to understand the unique, multi‐responsive material properties. CAU‐54 exhibits rarely observed reversible photochromism as well as turn‐on photoluminescence by various external chemical or physical stimuli including change of pressure, solvent exchange, and temperature variation. These properties can be unequivocally assigned to the presence of tetraphenylethylene (TPE) moieties of the linker molecules within the MOF, i.e., the ordered spatial arrangement of the linker molecules, the presence of accessible pores as well as the coordination flexibility of the phosphonate groups and the rotational freedom of the linker. By temperature‐dependent steady‐state and time‐resolved luminescence studies, it is shown that this compound exhibits a) blue fluorescence that becomes effectively quenched at room temperature, b) green efficient luminescence with thermal stability up to 400 K, and c) red phosphorescence correlated to the observed photochromism. In addition, CAU‐54 shows unusual thermal expansion properties as shown by temperature‐dependent powder X‐ray diffraction measurements with identified transition points that correlate with the observed temperature‐dependent changes in the photoluminescence. Objectives: Anti‐resorptive agents have been linked to the development of MRONJ in patients undergoing dental surgical procedures. This survey aims to explore the level of knowledge and experience of Italian Society of Periodontology and Implantology members in the management of patients treated with anti‐resorptive agents and with the risk of developing MRONJ. Materials and Methods: An 18‐item questionnaire was submitted by e‐mail to the SIdP members. Statistical analyses were carried out. Continuous variables were described as mean ± standard deviation (SD) or median, and first and third quartile according to distribution's normality. Normality of data was checked with Shapiro–Wilk test. Results: Four hundred and fifty‐one questionnaires were returned by e‐mail (32%). Most of the respondents were private practitioners (81.8%). Only 47.7% declared to be highly confident in managing patients on anti‐resorptive therapy while 92.5% reported to have performed tooth extractions and 52.3% implant surgery in patients under anti‐resorptive therapy for osteometabolic disorders. One or more MRONJ‐affected patients were encountered by 63.2% of the respondents. Conclusions: This survey highlights the need to develop a "dedicated" program both for dentists and prescribers to improve the level of cooperation and to increase the level of awareness of patients treated with anti‐resorptive agents. Objectives: Investigation of the therapeutic effect of zoledronic acid (ZA) in a preclinical model of jaw osteosarcoma (JO). Materials and Methods: The effect of 100 μg/kg ZA administered twice a week was assessed in a xenogenic mouse model of JO. The clinical (tumor growth, development of lung metastasis), radiological (bone microarchitecture by micro‐CT analysis), and molecular and immunohistochemical (TRAP, RANK/RANKL, VEGF, and CD146) parameters were investigated. Results: Animals receiving ZA exhibited an increased tumor volume compared with nontreated animals (71.3 ± 14.3 mm3 vs. 51.9 ± 19.9 mm3 at D14, respectively; p = 0.06) as well as increased numbers of lung metastases (mean 4.88 ± 4.45 vs. 0.50 ± 1.07 metastases, respectively; p = 0.02). ZA protected mandibular bone against tumor osteolysis (mean bone volume of 12.81 ± 0.53 mm3 in the ZA group vs. 11.55 ± 1.18 mm3 in the control group; p = 0.01). ZA induced a nonsignificant decrease in mRNA expression of the osteoclastic marker TRAP and an increase in RANK/RANKL bone remodeling markers. Conclusion: The use of bisphosphonates in the therapeutic strategy for JO should be further explored, as should the role of bone resorption in the pathophysiology of the disease. Objectives: To provide an overview of the features of patients with medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) and explore recurrence-related factors after surgery. Materials and methods: All pathological records of patients diagnosed with osteonecrosis or osteomyelitis of the jaw were reviewed. Only patients who had a history of use of medication related to bone turnover were included. All demographic and clinical characteristics were collected during review. Univariate and logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate the associations between risk factors and recurrence. A p value < 0.05 was considered to indicate statistical significance in all analyses. Results: A total of 313 patients were ultimately included. Most patients (89.14%) underwent bone turnover-related treatment due to malignancy. The breast and prostate were the most common locations of primary tumors in females and males, respectively. Almost all MRONJ patients experienced inflammatory symptoms. Recurrence occurred in 55 patients at 60 locations. The total recurrence rate was 16.85%, with no significant differences between the maxilla and mandible. Extensive surgery and flap transfer were strongly related to a lower recurrence risk. Nearly 80% of patients had recurrence-related symptoms within 6 months. Conclusion: When MRONJ is treated with surgical methods, extensive resection and flap transfer can reduce recurrence risk. Six-month follow-up is needed to exclude recurrence after surgery. Clinical relevance: This study revealed the surgical-related risk factors, such as extensive surgery and flap transfer, when treating MRONJ patients, and 6-month follow-up is needed to detect recurrence. In this work, a novel ultrasound mediated synthesis of chromone based α-aminophosphonate using CdS/CNT nanocomposite has been reported. The nanocomposite was characterized using techniques like Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-Ray Diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis, and morphology studies were carried out using Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy, and Transmission Electron Microscopy. Further, the synthesized α-aminophosphonate derivatives were characterized using FTIR, 1H-NMR and CHN elemental analysis. The present method provides various advantages such as operational simplicity, high yield, short reaction time, easy workup and solvent free condition. In addition, the catalyst exhibited remarkable reusability, demonstrating consistent performance up to five runs without any significant loss of its catalytic activity. Generalized arterial calcification of infancy (GACI) is a rare disease characterized by arterial calcification. GACI is caused by a mutation in the ENPP1 or ABCC6 genes. GACI causes severe hypertension and heart failure, and approximately 50% of patients die within the first 6 months. In particular, preterm infants with GACI often die due to immature cardiac function. Bisphosphonates are effective in treating GACI; however, no standardized treatment regimen is available. We experienced a case of a preterm infant with GACI born at 30 weeks gestation. Ultrasonography showed high-intensity lesions in the arteries, and computed tomography revealed calcification of the arteries throughout the body, leading to the diagnosis of GACI. We administered intravenous pamidronate, and her cardiac contraction improved. The initial scheduled interval between drug administrations was 2 months. However, the cardiac contraction worsened 1 month after the pamidronate administration. Therefore, we decreased the dosing interval and administered a second course of pamidronate, which improved her cardiac function. We then switched to oral etidronate. To improve the morbidity and mortality rates of preterm infants with GACI, it is important to obtain an early diagnosis of GACI by investigating high-intensity lesions in the arteries and performing early administration of an appropriate type of bisphosphonate. Background: Bone modifying agents (BMAs) have been used to prevent skeletal-related events (SRE) in cancer patients with bone metastases. In this meta-analysis, efficacy and adverse events (AEs) were studied based on a de-escalation strategy in which the BMA dosing interval was prolonged from 4 to 12 weeks. Methods: PubMed, Cochrane, ICHUSHI, and CINAHL were searched for articles on BMA dosing intervals from outcomes measured were the incidence of SRE and related various AEs. A quantitative meta-analysis was performed using a random-effects model to calculate relative risk ratios (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Result: The meta-analysis included three randomized controlled studies (RCTs) of Zoledronic acid hydrate (ZA) (n = 2663) and six RCTs (n = 141) on BMA other than ZA. There was no difference in the incidence of SREs when comparing the dosing frequency of 12 versus 4 weeks for BMA (RR = 1.21, 95% CI [0.82–1.78], p = 0.33). Further, AEs related to treatment discontinuation were significantly less frequent with ZA given every 12 weeks than when given every 4 weeks (RR = 0.51 [0.30–0.89], p = 0.02). In particular, renal dysfunction leading to grade ≥3 or discontinuation of treatment with ZA occurred significantly less frequently with every 12-week dosing (RR = 0.33 [0.12–0.91], p = 0.33). Conclusion: This meta-analysis showed no influence of BMA de-escalation on the incidence of SRE; nevertheless, AEs appeared to reduce with the de-escalated usage of ZA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Patients undergoing knee replacement, which is mainly indicated in severe osteoarthritis, are frequently co-affected by osteoporosis and osteopenia. With a prevalence standing at around 20% in patients receiving knee arthroplasty, osteoporosis could lead to poor outcomes postoperatively. Some of these complications include periprosthetic fractures and an increased revision rate. Antiresorptive medications have been shown to be beneficial postoperatively. Background: Osteoporosis (OP) is a significant medical issue associated with population aging. Recent research on herbal medicines (HMs) for OP has been increasing, with these therapies sometimes used in conjunction with bisphosphonates (BPs), the standard treatment for OP. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the effects of combining HMs with BPs on improving bone mineral density (BMD) in patients with primary OP. Methods: We searched nine databases--PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure Wanfang, KISS, Kmbase, Science On, and Oasis--up to 31 August 2023. We selected randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing BMD between HMs plus BPs and BPs alone in primary OP. A meta-analysis with BMD as the primary outcome was performed using RevMan version 5.4. Study quality and evidence certainty were assessed through Cochrane's risk of bias2 and GRADE. Results: Out of 43 RCTs involving 4,470 participants (mean age 65.8 ± 6.6 years), 35 RCTs with 3,693 participantswere included in themeta-analysis. The combination of HMs and BPs was found to bemore effective in improving BMD compared to BPs alone, with improvements of 0.10 g/cm² at the lumbar spine (33 RCTs, 95% CI: 0.07-0.12, p < 0.001, I² = 93%) and 0.08 g/cm² at the femoral neck (20 RCTs, 95% CI: 0.05-0.12, p < 0.001, I² = 94%), though this result was associated with high heterogeneity, high risk of bias, and very low certainty of evidence. Conclusion: Our data suggest the possibility that combining HMs with BPs may improve BMD in primary OP more effectively than using BPs alone. However, the results should be interpreted with caution due to the high heterogeneity and low quality of the studies included in the review. Summary: The study found that in osteoporosis patients who had not previously received bisphosphonate treatment and were in a treatment cycle of over 12 months, both teriparatide and denosumab significantly increased bone mineral density compared to bisphosphonates. Additionally, teriparatide was also shown to significantly decrease the risk of fractures. Objective: The systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess and compare the safety and efficacy of teriparatide vs. bisphosphonates and denosumab vs. bisphosphonates in patients with osteoporosis who had not previously received bisphosphonates. Methods: We conducted a search of published literature from inception to May 31, 2023, including databases such as PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, CNKI, SinoMed, VIP, and WanFang. The study only included head-to-head randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared teriparatide and denosumab with bisphosphonates to treat patients with osteoporosis. Fixed-effect model and random-effect model were used due to clinical heterogeneity. Meta-analysis was performed via Stata 17.0. Results: A total of 6680 patients were enrolled across 23 eligible trials. The results of the meta-analysis showed that teriparatide was superior to bisphosphonates in decreasing the risk of fracture (risk ratio (RR) = 0.61, 95% confidence interval (CI) (0.51, 0.74), P < 0.001). Denosumab showed no benefit compared to bisphosphonates in reducing the risk of fracture in treating osteoporosis (RR 0.99, 95% CI (0.62, 1.57), P = 0.96). Compared with bisphosphonates, teriparatide and denosumab could significantly improve femoral neck, total hip, and lumbar spine bone mineral density (BMD) (P < 0.05). Furthermore, teriparatide and denosumab did not increase the incidence of adverse events (teriparatide vs. bisphosphonates, RR 0.92, 95% CI (0.79, 1.08), P = 0.32; denosumab vs. bisphosphonates, RR 0.98, 95% CI (0.95, 1.02), P = 0.37). α-Cyanophosphonates, which are useful reagents for the Horner–Wittig reaction, were synthesized under solvent-free conditions by using a choline chloride–zinc chloride deep-eutectic solvent (DES) as a catalyst. This is only the second report on the synthesis of these compounds. In the previous report, diethyl trimethylsilyl phosphite was used as a reagent and TiCl4 as a catalyst, whereas in this study, both the reagent (triphenylphosphine) and the catalyst (choline chloride–zinc chloride DES) are cheaper, more readily available, and less harmful than those used in the previous work. Moreover, the process involves an interesting cascade reaction between a β-nitrostyrene and two equivalents of triphenyl phosphite, leading to the desired product by a new synthetic route. The products can be used in the pharmaceutical and agricultural industries, in addition to their synthetic applications in the preparation of α,β-unsaturated nitriles. The reactions were completed on using 20 mol% of DES at 80 °C in six hours. Ten different β-nitrostyrenes were synthesized in yields of 55–87% after purification. β-Nitrostyrenes containing electron-donating groups showed higher yields. The reaction failed when aliphatic or heteroaromatic nitroalkenes or β-nitrostyrenes with electron-withdrawing substituents were employed. Finally, three plausible mechanistic routes are proposed for the reaction, starting with the nucleophilic addition of triphenyl phosphite to the carbon, nitrogen, or oxygen atom in the α-position. Heterocyclic compounds play a crucial role in the drug discovery process and development due to their significant presence and importance. Here, we report a comprehensive analysis of α-aminophosphonates containing pyridine (3a–g), prepared according to a clear-cut, uncomplicated procedure. The phosphonates are thoroughly characterized using various methods, such as elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, proton and carbon NMR, and FT-IR. The molecular docking interactions between the phosphonate and DRP-1 target protein observed that compound 3d had the top-ranked binding energy towards DRP-1 with a value equal to − 9.54 kcal/mol and this theoretically proves its inhibitory efficacy against DRP-1 arbitrated mitochondrial fission. Besides, the anticancer characteristics of compound 3d showed the best IC50 against HepG-2, MCF-7, and Caco-2 which confirmed our results towards suppressing DRP-1 protein (in-silico), and it elucidated no cytotoxic effects against human normal cell line (WI-38). Further, its pharmacokinetics were observed theoretically using ADMET. Moreover,compound 3d investigated the most potent antimicrobial ability against two pathological fungal strains, A. flavus and C. albicans, and four bacterial strains, E. coli, B. subtillis, S. aureus, and P. aregeunosa. Additionally, compound 3d clarified a powerful antioxidant scavenging activity against DPPH and ABTS free radicals (in-vitro). Furthermore, Density functional theory (DFT) was used to study the molecular structures of the synthesized compounds 3a–g, utilizing 6–311++G(d,p) as the basis set and to learn more about the molecules' reactive sites, the energies of the molecular electrostatic potential (MEP), the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO), and the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) were observed. Theoretically, FT-IR and Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements are calculated for every compound under investigation to show how theory and experiment relate. It was found that there was an excellent agreement between the theoretical and experimental data. Conclusively, all novel synthesized phosphonates could be used as pharmaceutical agents against pathogenic microbial strains and as anticancer candidates by inhibiting DRP-1-mediated mitochondrial mitophagy. Objective: To compare the efficacy and safety of denosumab and teriparatide versus oral bisphosphonates to treat postmenopausal osteoporosis. Summary of Background Data: While bisphosphonates have historically been the cornerstone of pharmacological management for bone protection in patients, emerging evidence suggests that teriparatide and denosumab warrant further investigation as potential first-line treatments. The optimal choice among denosumab, teriparatide, and oral bisphosphonates for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis remains a subject of ongoing debate and controversy within the scientific community. Methods: This systematic review adhered meticulously to the rigorous standards outlined by the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis) guidelines as well as the Cochrane Collaboration recommendations. Additionally, it employed the AMSTAR (Assessing the methodological quality of systematic reviews) criteria to ensure methodological robustness and enhance the credibility of the findings. A systematic electronic search was conducted across Web of Science, PubMed, and the Cochrane Library databases from their inception dates up to February 2024. Results: In this meta-analysis of studies, our findings suggest that compared to bisphosphonates, both teriparatide and denosumab demonstrated notable increases in percentage changes in lumbar spine bone mineral density (BMD) among postmenopausal osteoporosis patients. Furthermore, denosumab exhibited superiority over teriparatide and oral bisphosphonates in enhancing percentage changes in both femoral neck and total hip BMD, indicating its potential as a more efficacious option. Regarding safety outcomes, no significant differences were observed in the incidence of serious adverse events among patients treated with teriparatide, denosumab, and bisphosphonates. However, teriparatide showed superiority over oral bisphosphonates in terms of a lower risk of general adverse events, suggesting a favorable safety profile. Conclusion: In conclusion, our study suggests that teriparatide and denosumab demonstrate comparable or potentially superior efficacy and safety profiles compared to oral bisphosphonates for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. A facile room-temperature synthetic method is presented to produce alkali metal salts of tert-butyl phosphonic acid. The reaction between equimolar amounts of alkali metal carbonates and tert-butyl phosphonic acid in methanol results in the formation of [(tBuPO3H)Li(H2O)3•(H2O)] (1), [(tBuPO3)Na2(H2O)4]n (2), and [(tBuPO3H)K(H2O)]n (3). Solid-state structures of these compounds have been confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies and further validated using numerous spectroscopic and analytical techniques. Compounds 1--3 are polymeric solids that are predominantly made up of a 1-D polymeric metal phosphonate chain. This synthetic approach leads to the formation of network structures/polymers in the solid state that otherwise are absent in solution due to the ionic nature of the interaction between the alkali metal ions and phosphonate anions. Apart from the multidentate nature of the phosphonate ligands, additional hydrogen bonding interactions involving water molecules, free P--OH groups, and P O moieties allow these chains to be propagated into 2-D sheets. We have further utilized the completely metalated sodium phosphonate 2 to synthesize layered metal phosphonates [(tBuPO3)Ca(H2O)]n (4), [(tBuPO3)Mn(H2O)]n (5) and [(tBuPO3)Co(H2O)]n (6) via a simple metathesis reaction.
