Traditionally the lactation cycle of a dairy cow is based around a 12-month calving interval, allowing for 10 months of lactation, followed by a 2-month dry period. This means that the cow has to conceive within 2-3 months after calving, when she is also at peak lactation and metabolically is in a negative energy balance. Such challenging physiological conditions make it challenging for the cow to conceive at this time and many modern high-producing cows fail to get pregnant within the constraints of a 12-month calving interval. In addition, many cows still produce at a high level at drying-off time, increasing the risk of intramammary infections. Therefore, delaying conception past peak production and, as a result, extending the lactation beyond 10 months may increasingly be necessary. Additionally, extended lactation (EL) may offer other advantages such as fewer calves being born and thus fewer 'surplus' calves needing to be culled at a young age, fewer health and welfare issues and improved environmental outcomes (i.e. less greenhouse-gas emission; less antibiotic usage) during the lifetime of the animal. Extending lactation is a straight forward management practice in high-input dairy systems where a consistent supply of feed supplements is readily available, but may be more challenging to implement in low(er)-input pasture-based systems. The latter are much more seasonal, with a 12-month calving interval allowing pasture growth and quality to match the cow's nutritional demands; cows calve in spring when high-quality pasture is abundant and are dried-off during winter when pasture growth is more limited. In this review, we explored the impact of EL in both high-input systems and pasture-based systems. It covers the effects of EL on milk production, composition and processing, as well as on reproductive performance, health and welfare, and environmental and economic outcomes. This study evaluates two expedient electronic sensors, a rising plate meter (RPM) and a "Grassmaster II" capacitance probe (GMII), to estimate pasture dry matter (DM, in kg ha−1). The sampling process consisted of sensor measurements, followed by pasture collection and a laboratory reference analysis. In this comparative study, carried out throughout the 2023/2024 pasture growing season, a total of 288 pasture samples were collected in two phases (calibration and validation). The calibration phase (n = 144) consisted of measurements on three dates (6 December 2023, 29 February and 10 May 2024) in 48 georeferenced sampling areas of the experimental field "Eco-SPAA" ("MG" field), located at Mitra farm (Évora, Portugal). This pasture is a permanent mixture of various botanical species (grasses, legumes, and others) grazed by sheep, and is representative of biodiverse dryland pastures. The validation phase (n = 144) was carried out between December 2023 and April 2024 in 18 field tests (each with eight pasture samples), in three types of representative pastures: the same mixture for grazing ("MG" field), a commercial and annual mixture for cutting (mowing) and conservation ("MM" field), and legumes for grazing ("LG" field). The best estimation model for DM was obtained based on measurements carried out in February in the case of the GMII probe (R2 = 0.61) and December 2023 and February 2024 in the case of RPM (R2 = 0.76). The estimation decreased very significantly for both sensors based on measurements carried out in May (spring). The validation phase showed greater accuracy (less RMSE) in "MG" field tests (RMSE of 735.4 kg ha−1 with GMII and 512.3 kg ha−1 with the RPM). The results open perspectives for other works that would allow the testing, calibration, and validation of these electronic sensors in a wider range of pasture production conditions, in order to improve their accuracy as decision-making support tools in pasture management. Integrating forage legumes into grasslands offers numerous ecosystem services. However, the management of grass‐legume pastures is challenging because the interaction between the defoliation frequency and severity may affect the legume persistence and forage intake by grazing animals. This 2‐year study evaluated the most effective grazing intensity to increase forage intake while maintaining a balanced legume proportion in tropical pastures consisting of Brachiaria brizantha and Arachis pintoi. Three treatments (grazing intensities) were assessed: severe, moderate, and low, corresponding to stubble heights of 10, 15, and 20 cm, respectively, and a pre‐grazing height of 25 cm. Two purebred Tabapua heifers were used for each treatment, and additional put‐and‐take animals were introduced, as required. Canopy structure, grazing behaviour, nutritive value, and forage intake were evaluated. The legume proportion in herbage mass remained consistent across all intensities, averaging 35% pre‐ and 32% post‐grazing. The grazing duration remained consistent across treatments on the first and third days, with an average grazing time of 390 and 440 min, respectively. Under post‐grazing conditions, low‐intensity grazing had a 52% greater intake rate than severe‐intensity grazing, which was attributed to a greater biting rate (37.9 bites/min) and bite weight (0.9 g DM/bite). Moderate grazing intensity (stubble height of ~15 cm associated with a pre‐grazing height of ~25 cm) is recommended to manage a mixture of B. brizantha and A. pintoi when the objective is to couple high forage intake with a balanced legume proportion in the pasture. Context: Forage–livestock systems contribute to Brazilian greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, harming the environment and reducing bioeconomic efficiency. Employing technologies like pasture management is crucial for sustainable mitigation. Aims: Our objective was to measure greenhouse gas emissions of beef cattle in forage systems by exploring well-managed Brachiaria hybrid pastures in the Brazilian Amazon Biome. Methods: The experimental design was a randomised complete block, with two cultivars: Ipyporã and Mulato II, in four replicates, totalling eight experimental units, and each experimental unit was 1.5 ha. Key results: Ipyporã pastures had 88.5% greater herbage mass than Mulato II in January (8350 vs 4430 kg dry mass ha−1). There was no difference between cultivars for soil GHG emissions. The greatest enteric methane and carbon dioxide values were measured in February. In Ipyporã pastures, the average daily gain was 57% and 50% greater than in Mulato II, in February (837 vs 533 g day−1) and March (1054 vs 700 g day−1) respectively. Enteric methane and carbon dioxide were 34% and 48% less respectively in Ipyporã pastures in February. Conclusions: Soil GHG emissions in fertilised pastures followed similar patterns across different cultivars, but those with greater production tended to produce more emissions (soil and enteric) due to fertilisation and increased stocking rates. Implications: Forage–livestock production systems benefit from adequate grazing and pasture management of two Brachiaria cultivars, resulting in greater productivity compared to GHG emissions. This leads to reduced emissions per unit of product, contributing to the development of a more efficient and sustainable forage–livestock system. This study highlights the first greenhouse gas evaluation of Brachiaria BRS Ipyporã (released in 2017) and Mulato II in forage–livestock systems in the Brazilian Amazon. These hybrid forages promise a more sustainable system by reducing greenhouse gas emissions per kilogram of product. These results address the importance of well-managed pastures as a sustainable practice and the use of Brachiaria grass hybrids as an alternative for a more efficient system with reduced emissions per unit of product. Context: The future of livestock farming is based on grazing management practices that balance using natural resources and forage technical efficiency for cattle. Aims: This study aimed to investigate the bromatological characteristics and cattle performance under continuous and intermittent stocking systems in Panicum maximum cvv. Mombaça and Tanzania pastures, as well as identify the appropriate height for managing these forages. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis were used from selecting studies available in scientific article format in electronic databases: Google Scholar, ISI Web of Science, and PubMed. We identified 4691 documents, of which 13 were submitted to meta-analysis. Key results: Tanzania pasture presented 564.25 ± 38.56 g kg−1 of leaf biomass dry matter (DM) and 3.09 ± 0.34 of leaf stem−1 ratio in intermittent stocking system, which was higher than continuous system, with values of 313.10 ± 38.56 g kg−1 DM (P = 0.0380) and 1.04 ± 0.34 (P = 0.0216), respectively. Animals' average daily gain was greater in continuous stocking system than intermittent system, with values of 0.91 kg day−1 and 0.67 kg day−1, respectively. Additionally, post-grazing height ≥31 cm for Tanzania increased average daily gain by 28.3% (P = 0.0263), and height ≥39 cm for Mombaça increased average daily gain by 38.1% (P = 0.0002). Conclusions: Post-grazing residues from the intermittent method or constant pasture height from the continuous method are the main indicators for adapting pasture management. Therefore, grazing management at heights between ≥31 and 39 cm for Tanzania and Mombaça is promising for animal performance. Implications: Results provide subsidies for decision making regarding grazing management to maximise animal productivity. In countries with pasture-based dairy systems and relatively cold winters, such as New Zealand, it is common to manage pregnant, nonlactating cows on forage crop paddocks rather than pasture, due to slow pasture growth rates. Wintering dairy cattle on grazed crops can compromise welfare if wet and muddy underfoot conditions occur, which can reduce lying. This study investigated behavioral and physiological indicators of welfare of cows under 2 wintering practices: cows managed on and grazed kale crop (Brassica oleracea), and cows managed on pasture with baled hay. Following dry-off (d 0), 80 cows were randomly assigned to 1 of the 2 wintering practices (40 cows/practice) and monitored between d 4 and 32 (phase 1). During this period, lying and stepping behavior was continuously recorded using leg-based accelerometers. Blood samples were obtained at d 0 and 32 for measurements of thyroxine (T4), nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), white blood cells (WBC), and red blood cells. All data for phase 1 were presented descriptively due to the lack of treatment replication. Daily mean air temperature during this period was 5.2°C (range: 0.0–10.7°C), and rainfall was 1.1 mm/d (range: 0–5.6mm/d). Between d 4 and 32, cows in both groups spent similar amounts of time lying (pasture with hay cows: 8.9 h/24 h ± 2.57, kale crop cows: 8.7 h/24 h ± 3.06, mean ± SEM). Both groups reduced their lying on wet and cold days, and there was evidence of rebound lying once unfavorable weather conditions stopped. Cows on kale crop had numerically higher NEFA and lower WBC compared with cows managed on pasture, although most physiological values were within normal ranges. In a second phase of the study (d 34 and 35), cows were managed under controlled, replicated conditions in the 2 wintering practices using typical on-farm stocking rates (2 or 4 cows per group in the pasture with hay and kale crop treatments, respectively; n = 10 groups/treatment). During this period, cow behavior, skin and surface temperatures, hygiene scores, feed intakes, and ground conditions were measured. Weather conditions during the 48-h exposure were mostly cold and dry (mean air temperature: 7.8°C, range: −2.2 to 20.5°C). Cows managed on pasture with hay spent more time lying down on the first day of exposure; however, this was likely due to less space being available to kale cows on this day. Cows managed on pasture with hay ruminated more than cows on kale crop on both days of observations (d 1: 37.9% vs. 30.9% of observations, d 2: 36.8% vs. 28.7% of observations for pasture with hay and kale crop groups, respectively) and were lying more often in postures indicative of greater thermal comfort. Cows managed on pasture with hay had higher skin and surface temperatures compared with cows on kale crop, whereas cows on kale crop had dirtier coats. Results suggest that opportunities for thermal comfort were greater for cows managed on pasture with hay bales, which may be due to increased rumination activities and more insulated lying areas. Humans have profoundly altered phosphorus (P) cycling across scales. Agriculturally driven changes (e.g., excessive P‐fertilization and manure addition), in particular, have resulted in pronounced P accumulations in soils, often known as "soil legacy P." These legacy P reserves serve as persistent and long‐term nonpoint sources, inducing downstream eutrophication and ecosystem services degradation. While there is considerable scientific and policy interest in legacy P, its fine‐scale spatial heterogeneity, underlying drivers, and scales of variance remain unclear. Here we present an extensive field sampling (150‐m interval grid) and analysis of 1438 surface soils (0–15 cm) in 2020 for two typical subtropical grassland types managed for livestock production: Intensively managed (IM) and Semi‐natural (SN) pastures. We ask the following questions: (1) What is the spatial variability, and are there hotspots of soil legacy P? (2) Does soil legacy P vary primarily within pastures, among pastures, or between pasture types? (3) How does soil legacy P relate to pasture management intensity, soil and geographic characteristics? and (4) What is the relationship between soil legacy P and aboveground plant tissue P concentration? Our results showed that three measurements of soil legacy P (total P, Mehlich‐1, and Mehlich‐3 extractable P representing labile P pools) varied substantially across the landscape. Spatial autoregressive models revealed that soil organic matter, pH, available Fe and Al, elevation, and pasture management intensity were crucial predictors for spatial patterns of soil P, although models were more reliable for predicting total P (68.9%) than labile P. Our analysis further demonstrated that total variance in soil legacy P was greater in IM than SN pastures, and intensified pasture management rescaled spatial patterns of soil legacy P. In particular, after controlling for sample size, soil P was extremely variable at small scales, with variance diminished as spatial scale increased. Our results suggest that broad pasture‐ or farm‐level best management practices may be limited and less efficient, especially for more IM pastures. Rather, management to curtail soil legacy P and mitigate P loading and losses should be implemented at fine scales designed to target spatially distinct P hotspots across the landscape. Nitrogen fertilization is one of the main management strategies for continuous pasture management with high productivity. We examined the effects of nitrogen fertilization on the morphogenic, structural, and tillering dynamic characteristics of Tanzania grass in the Amazon region in the state of Pará, Brazil. The study was conducted using a randomized block design with six treatments (0, 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 kg N ha−1 year−1) and five replicates. The treatments were performed during the rainy season in 2016 and 2017 using urea as the nitrogen source. The leaf elongation rate was increased by 68.5% compared with that of the control treatment (p < 0.01). The leaf appearance rate and number of alive leaves increased with higher doses of nitrogen (p < 0.01, each). The regrowth period was reduced by approximately 13 days under 500 kg N ha−1 (p < 0.01), thus providing more production cycles. Nitrogen fertilization was also associated with a higher tillering rate (p < 0.01); however, the rate of this increase decreased with increasing nitrogen dose. Higher nitrogen doses thus improved the development of Tanzania grass; however, this became less pronounced at doses < 300 kg N ha−1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract. The longstanding animal husbandry practices in small ruminants have led to the prevalence of various diseases, particularly parasitic infections. Among these, gastrointestinal helminthoses are widespread globally, exhibiting high prevalence and incidence rates, which contribute to significant morbidity and moderate mortality. The adverse pathogenic effects of parasites on the host organism result in clinically evident diseases and increased mortality, especially among younger animals, and also entail negative economic consequences. These consequences include reduced wool and milk production, poorer young animal rearing, and decreased overall body resistance, making animals more susceptible to other diseases. Our study focused on identifying optimal measures for controlling infections in small ruminants within the Mariovo District in the Pelagonia Region. We emphasized the crucial need for implementing these measures to protect small ruminant health and ensure production success. Integrating parasite control strategies, including systematic monitoring of infection rates, is essential for achieving these goals. These measures included determining optimal time of parasitological control of herds of small ruminants; optimal time of deworming; inspection of pastures before and during the grazing season; optimization of the way of use and eradication of pastures, monitoring of the achieved results. Conducted over the period of 2014-2022, this research yielded consistent results, highlighting the importance of combating parasitic diseases in this region.

Unmanned aircraft systems (UASs) are emerging as useful tools in environmental studies due to their mobility and ability to cover large areas. In this study, we used an air analyzer attached to a UAS to measure gas and particulate matter (PM) emissions from rotationally grazed dairy pastures in northern Wisconsin. UAS-based sampling enabled wireless data transmission using the LoRa protocol to a ground station, synchronizing with a cloud server. During the measurements, latitude, longitude, and altitude were recorded using a high-precision global positioning system (GPS). Over 1200 measurements per parameter were made during each site visit. The spatial distribution of the emission rates was estimated using the Lagrangian mass balance approach and Kriging interpolation. A horizontal sampling probe effectively minimized the impact of propeller downwash on the measurements. The average concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) were 800.1 ± 39.7 mg m−3, 1.38 ± 0.063 mg m−3, and 0.71 ± 0.03 mg m−3, respectively. No significant difference was found between CO2 concentrations measured by the UAS sensor and gas chromatography (p = 0.061). Emission maps highlighted variability across the pasture, with an average CO2 emission rate of 1.52 ± 0.80 g day−1 m−2, which was within the range reported in the literature. Introducing legumes into C4-dominated tropical pastures, may enhance their sustainability but has some pasture management constraints. One potential alternative is using arboreal legumes, but several of these species have relatively high condensed tannin (CT) concentrations, which negatively impact forage quality. There is limited knowledge, however, on how arboreal legume leaf CT content varies over the year and how this might impact forage quality. The objective of this 2 year study was to assess the seasonal variation of CT and nutritive value for ruminants of the tropical tree legumes gliricidia [Gliricidia sepium (Jacq.) Kunth ex. Walp.] and mimosa (Mimosa caesalpiniifolia Benth). The research was carried out in the sub-humid tropical region of Brazil on well-established pastures in which either legume was present with signalgrass (Urochloa decumbens Stapf.). We determined CT and nitrogen concentrations, in vitro digestible organic matter (IVDOM), and leaf δ13C and δ15N from January to October of 2017 and 2018. All parameters were affected (P < 0.05) by the interaction between legume species and sampling time, with generally higher leaf CT content for mimosa than gliricidia, and both were reduced at the start of the dry season, although much more drastically for mimosa. The IVDOM was strongly affected by CT content and increased at the start of the dry season, coincidentally when C4 grass forage quality typically decreased. There is a marked species effect, with CT from gliricidia impacting IVDOM more than the same CT content from mimosa. While N concentration from mimosa also increased at the start of the dry season, that for gliricidia did not vary over the year. We conclude that although these arboreal legumes have relatively high CT contents, these reduce during the dry season when CT concentrations coinciding with a reduced forage quality as the protein content for C4 grasses is usually inadequate in this season. Plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.) has recently been thrust into the limelight as a potential tool for mitigating nitrogen losses from the New Zealand pastoral environment. It is claimed to possess characteristics to reduce nitrogen leaching through both animal and soil-based mechanisms. This review examines the use of plantain in New Zealand pastures and the research that has led to these claims. The focus is on the evaluation of scientific evidence for the mechanisms through which plantain is proposed to reduce nitrate leaching, as well as the research on the implementation of plantain into pastoral farm systems. Plantain clearly increases the urination of grazing animals; a trait not unique to plantain. This review concludes that many research studies supporting the beneficial impact of plantain do not stand up against scientific scrutiny associated with methodology and interpretation of data. It is recommended more research should be undertaken on other pasture species and management tools, that may be more effective alternatives to plantain for nitrogen mitigation in pastures. Accurate information about the amount of standing biomass is important in pasture management for monitoring forage growth patterns, minimizing the risk of overgrazing, and ensuring the necessary feed requirements of livestock. The morphological features of plants, like crop height and density, have been proven to be prominent predictors of crop yield. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of stereovision-based crop height and vegetation coverage measurements in predicting the aboveground biomass yield of bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) in a pasture. Data were collected from 136 experimental plots within a 0.81 ha bermudagrass pasture using an RGB-depth camera mounted on a ground rover. The crop height was determined based on the disparity between images captured by two stereo cameras of the depth camera. The vegetation coverage was extracted from the RGB images using a machine learning algorithm by segmenting vegetative and non-vegetative pixels. After camera measurements, the plots were harvested and sub-sampled to measure the wet and dry biomass yields for each plot. The wet biomass yield prediction function based on crop height and vegetation coverage was generated using a linear regression analysis. The results indicated that the combination of crop height and vegetation coverage showed a promising correlation with aboveground wet biomass yield. However, the prediction function based only on the crop height showed less residuals at the extremes compared to the combined prediction function (crop height and vegetation coverage) and was thus declared the recommended approach (R2 = 0.91; SeY= 1824 kg-wet/ha). The forage-livestock balance is an important component of natural grassland management, and realizing a balance between the nutrient energy demand of domestic animals and the energy supply of grasslands is the core challenge in forage-livestock management. This study was performed at the Xieertala Ranch in Hulunbuir City, Inner Mongolia. Using the GRAZPLAN and GrazFeed models, we examined the forage-livestock energy balance during different grazing periods and physiological stages of livestock growth under natural grazing conditions. Data on pasture conditions, climatic factors, supplemental feeding, and livestock characteristics, were used to analyze the metabolizable energy (ME), metabolizable energy for maintenance (MEm), and total metabolizable energy intake (MEItotal) of grazing livestock. The results showed that the energy balance between forage and animals differed for adult cows at different physiological stages. In the early lactation period, although the MEItotal was greater than MEm, it did not meet the requirement for ME. MEItotal was greater than ME during midlactation, but there was still an energy imbalance in the early and late lactation periods. In the late lactation period, MEItotal could meet ME requirements from April-September. Adult gestational lactating cows with or without calves were unable to meet their ME requirement, especially in the dry period, even though MEItotal was greater than MEm. Adult cows at different physiological stages exhibited differences in daily forage intake and rumen microbial crude protein (MCP) metabolism, and the forage intake by nonpregnant cows decreased as follows: early lactation > mid-lactation > late lactation, pregnant cows' lactation > dry period. For the degradation, digestion and synthesis of rumen MCP, earlylactation cows were similar to those in the mid-lactation group, but both were higher than those in the late-lactation group, while pregnant cows had greater degradation, digestion, and synthesis of MCP in the lactation period relative to the dry period. For lactating cows, especially those with calves, grazing energy requirements, methane emission metabolism and heat production were highest in August, with increased energy expenditure in winter. Overall, grazing energy, methane emissions and heat production by dry cows were low. In the context of global climate change and grassland degradation, managers must adopt different strategies according to the physiological stages of livestock to ensure a foragelivestock balance and the sustainable utilization and development of grasslands. The páramos of Boyacá in Colombia are earmarked for delimitation to prevent the expansion of the agricultural frontier and protect endemic flora that contribute to water provision for cities. A varied conservation toolbox will be used, including the creation of protected areas for re-wilding and the 'sustainable' transitioning of livelihoods identified as environmentally destructive. Agriculture and cattle livestock farming has been identified for transitioning. Despite the negative discourse related to livestock holding, this paper argues that small-scale agropastoralism contributes to re-peasantisation and provides the foundations for an agrobiodiverse conservation approach. Agropastoralism facilitates re-peasantisation through strong socio-economic networks, interconnected communities, the solidarity economy, and self-management of natural resources. Whilst, agropastoral mobility spatially binds social networks across large and disconnected spaces. Mobility is also fundamental to dynamic land access and pasture management, as it prevents over-grazing. This exemplifies how resilient socio-economic networks and mobile production strategies could be harnessed for agrobiodiversity, instead of land sparing and other sedentary 'green' economies. This paper makes conceptual contributions to 'autonomy' in re-peasantisation by empirically demonstrating the importance of mobile and flexible systems of production. It also makes a novel methodological contribution in applying a spatial lens that further unpacks how movement across the páramos facilitates autonomy and re-peasantisation. These themes are explored using interview data from 53 semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders and small-scale agropastoralists from across the páramos and field observation. The paper concludes by recommending a harnessing of agropastoral knowledge, to potentiate agrobiodiversity, for a more socio-ecologically just approach to farming and conservation in the páramos. Gelatin industry residues are increasingly used as fertilizer and soil conditioner. However, correct residue dosage is critical for grass development and minimizing environmental impacts. This randomized block design study determined adequate dosage of mixed gelatin sludge (MGS) for Marandu grass production in wet/dry seasons in Brazil. Five MGS levels (0–200% of required nitrogen) were compared to mineral fertilizer. Agronomic/productivity characteristics, bromatological composition, macro/micronutrient composition of leaves, and soil chemical attributes were evaluated. Agronomic/productivity characteristics were influenced by MGS dose in both dry/rainy seasons, except for leaf blade pseudostem ratio and percentage of leaves/pseudostem. Bromatological composition was influenced by MGS doses in dry/rainy seasons except for dry/mineral material quantities. Gelatin industry residues are increasingly used as fertilizer and soil conditioner. However, correct residue dosage is critical for grass development and minimizing environmental impacts. This randomized block design study determined adequate dosage of mixed gelatin sludge (MGS) for Marandu grass production in wet/dry seasons in Brazil. Five MGS levels (0–200% of required nitrogen) were compared to mineral fertilizer. Agronomic/productivity characteristics, bromatological composition, macro/micronutrient composition of leaves, and soil chemical attributes were evaluated. Agronomic/productivity characteristics were influenced by MGS dose in both dry/rainy seasons, except for leaf blade pseudostem ratio and percentage of leaves/pseudostem. Bromatological composition was influenced by MGS doses in dry/rainy seasons except for dry/mineral material quantities. Pimelea trichostachya Lindl. is a native Australian forb responsible for livestock poisoning and reducing the productivity and sustainability of grazing enterprises. This study was conducted as a pot trial under controlled conditions to investigate an effective chemical management strategy for P. trichostachya, a method that did not leave standing dead plant material, as such material can also be toxic to grazing cattle. Three herbicides, including one pre-emergence (tebuthiuron) and two post-emergence herbicides (2,4-D and metsulfuron-methyl), were tested in pot trials for their efficacy on P. trichostachya. Results showed that tebuthiuron applied as either a granular (10% active ingredient, a.i.) or pelleted (20% a.i.) form efficiently reduced the emergence of P. trichostachya seedlings. Although some seedlings emerged, they perished within 7 days post treatment, leaving no residual plant matter. Testing now needs to be undertaken under field conditions to validate the findings within vegetation communities where potential non-target impacts need to be accounted for as well. The post-emergence application of 2,4-D and metsulfuron-methyl demonstrated that the highest efficacy and reduced application rates were achieved by treating earlier growth stages (i.e., seedlings) of P. trichostachya plants. In addition, the amount of toxic dead plant material was minimized due to the faster degradation of these small plants. Rumen flukes cause heavy economic losses in the ruminant industry worldwide, especially in tropical and subtropical countries. This study estimated the prevalence of rumen flukes in buffaloes, identified the species diversity, and determined risk factors associated with rumen fluke prevalence in Perak, Peninsular Malaysia. A cross-sectional study was conducted, and 321 faecal samples were collected from six buffalo farms. A structured questionnaire was developed, and farmers were interviewed to obtain information regarding risk factors associated with rumen fluke infection. The faecal samples were examined using sedimentation and Flukefinder® techniques. Genomic DNA was extracted from the fluke eggs recovered using the Flukefinder® method, and the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) fragment was amplified and sequenced to facilitate species identification. The results showed that the overall prevalence of rumen fluke across the sampled farms was 40.2% (129/321). Three rumen fluke species were identified, namely, Fischoederius elongatus, F. cobboldi, and Orthocoelium streptocoelium. Several management factors had a significant association (P < 0.05) with rumen fluke prevalence, including production type, cleaning of the stable, drinking water system, flooding around the farm, grazing system, pasture sharing with other livestock, and deworming program. This work constitutes the first attempt to understand the epidemiology of rumen fluke infection in the region and suggests that good farm management, pasture management, choosing appropriate drugs, and proper husbandry practices may improve buffalo health and production in areas where rumen flukes are prevalent. To investigate whether trees and palms scattered in pastures contribute to the maintenance of bat assemblages in landscapes highly fragmented by livestock farming activities, we evaluated the bat assemblages and foraging guilds between wooded pastures and riparian vegetation. Using mist nets, we captured 1013 bats from 29 species and four taxonomic families. We found that the abundance, richness, and composition of bat species were not significantly different between vegetation types. Frugivores were the most abundant guild, and their abundance did not differ between vegetation types, indicating that wood-pastures allow the presence of these bats in the landscape. On the other hand, insectivores were more abundant in riparian vegetation and, interestingly, nectarivores were more abundant in pastures, likely due to the great plasticity of species of the genus Glossophaga. Our results are encouraging, since they demonstrate that a rustic pasture management that promoting the presence of scattered trees and palms along with belts of riparian vegetation, allows the maintenance of bat assemblages in a highly fragmented landscape. This study evaluated three continuous grazing systems: Brachiaria Brizantha, Clitoria ternatea and naturalized pastures, complemented with commercial concentrate and C. ternatea silage on milk yield, nutrient use and enteric methane (CH4) emissions. Nine multiparous cows of local Zebu breeds, with an average weight of 448 ± 87 kg, were used. The chemical composition of the food was determined. Live weight, milk production, and quality were assessed. Furthermore, serum urea, urea nitrogen, creatinine and glucose in blood were monitored, and nitrogen use efficiency were calculated. Enteric methane (CH4) emissions were estimated using Tier-2 methodology. A 3 × 3 latin square experimental design was applied. The grazing systems of B. brizantha and C. ternatea had the greater live weights of 465.8 and 453.3 kg/cow, although the latter is similar to naturalized pasture. Milk production and quality were not affected by grazing system, with the exception of the non-fat solids, where the C. ternatea system was lower (102.2 g/kg) than the other grazing systems. The crude protein and N intake, and N excretion in feces and urine were lower in naturalized pasture systems (1139.0 g/day). N outputs in milk was high in the C. ternatea system (56.3 g/cow/day). The naturalized pastures systems showed the better feed use efficiency (25.7%) compared to others. Serum urea and blood urea nitrogen were greater in B. brizantha followed by C. ternatea. Enteric CH4 emissions were indifferent among grazing systems when expressed as a percentage of greenhouse gases (7.1%). In conclusion, the grazing C. ternatea supplemented with commercial concentrate and C. ternatea silage maintains milk production and quality, reduced cow/day emissions (by 2.5%) and lowered energy losses as methane. Weed encroachment negatively affects pasture productivity by reducing herbage allowance, stocking rates, and livestock performance. Amaranthus spinosus L. is a weed species widely found in pastures worldwide and is considered challenging for ranchers due to its great potential for invasion, making it difficult to control. The high costs of chemical application and the global concern about environmental impacts restrict indiscriminate herbicide spraying in pastures. Site‐specific weed management (SSWM) is a weed management strategy based on weed spot‐spraying that has the potential to overcome these issues. Images from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can provide valuable information for weed mapping to drive the herbicide application in pastures. Deep learning techniques have been highlighted in image classification tasks. We developed a deep convolutional neural network (CNN)‐based image segmentation model based on the U‐Net architecture to detect and map Amaranthus spinosus in bermudagrass pastures using red–green–blue images acquired through UAV flying in moderate‐high altitude. The images were acquired from twelve paddocks under three treatments (weed‐free, weed‐strips, or weed‐infested) during the summer (2021‐2022). The CNN model was able to detect around 80% of the A. spinosus with an average prediction accuracy of 94%. Our weed mapping showed the potential of using the U‐Net model to generate a herbicide application map to be inserted into the sprayer system, reducing up to 76% of the amount of herbicide applied. Further studies are encouraged to increase the robustness of the model across species and development stages and develop sprayer systems to implement the spot‐spraying in field conditions. Using beneficial microorganisms along with sustainable strategies such as agronomic biofortification offers eco-friendly alternatives to combat climate change in ecosystems like dehesas. This study analyzes the combined effects of four wild Trichoderma spp. isolated from Extremadura, Spain (T. koningiopsis, two T. gamsii, and T. koningii, with negative and positive controls) and four Zn biofortification treatments (no Zn application; soil application of 5 mg of ZnSO4·7H2O per kg of soil, labeled soil Zn; two foliar applications of 5 mL 0.5% ZnSO4·7H2O, labeled foliar Zn; and soil + foliar combination, labeled SF) on Trifolium subterraneum performance. The combination of T. koningiopsis and T. gamsii with foliar Zn improved plant growth by up to 34.4%. Zinc accumulation was about 30% higher when T. gamsii and T. koningii were applied with SF, and their inoculation resulted in a 2.5-fold increase in ash. Trichoderma spp. affected nodulation differently; both T. gamsii inhibited nodulation by 24%, whereas neither T. koningiopsis nor T. koningii showed differences from the controls. These results highlight the potential of combining beneficial microorganisms with biofortification strategies to address nutrient deficiencies and improve agricultural sustainability. However, the complex interactions between both factors underscore the importance of strain selection and call for further research to optimize application strategies and elucidate underlying mechanisms. Rising platemeters are commonly used in Ireland and New Zealand for managing intensive pastures. To assess the applicability of a commercial rising platemeter operating with a microsonic sensor to estimate herbage mass with its own equation, the objectives were (i) to validate the original equation; (ii) to identify possible factors hampering its accuracy and precision; and (iii) to develop a new equation for heterogeneous swards. A comprehensive dataset (n = 1511) was compiled on the pastures of dairy farms. Compressed sward heights were measured by the rising platemeter. Herbage mass was harvested to determine reference herbage availability. The adequacy of estimating herbage mass was assessed using root mean squared error (RMSE) and mean bias. As the adequacy of the original equation was low, a new equation was developed using multiple regression models. The mean bias and the RMSE for the new equation were overall low with 201 kg dry matter/ha and 34.6%, but it tended to overestimate herbage availability at herbage mass < 500 kg dry matter/ha and underestimate it at >2500 kg dry matter/ha. Still, the newly developed equation for the microsonic sensor-based rising platemeter allows for accurate and precise estimation of available herbage mass on pastures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Intensive pasture management that aims at providing season-long forage while minimizing soil degradation is increasingly becoming an important grazing strategy in Kentucky. Typically, it involves the use of high-yielding warm and cool season forage species that are well suited to local soil and climate conditions, meeting the dual-purpose provision of high nutritional value while remaining resilient to grazing pressure and changing climate. Monitoring carbon exchange is a crucial component for effective pasture management to promote sustainable pastureland management practices. We hypothesized that pasturelands, when intensively managed, would exhibit a small but important CO2 cumulative uptake year-round. We used the Eddy covariance method to measure the net ecosystem exchange of CO2 (NEE) and productivity of an intensively managed pastureland at Kentucky State University Research and Demonstration station from 2015 to 2020. The study has two objectives: to quantify interannual variability in net ecosystem exchange, and examine the controlling environmental factors, in particular temperature, sunlight, and precipitation of NEE. Diurnal and seasonal fluctuations followed typical patterns of carbon uptake and release. Overall, the pasture site consistently was carbon sink except for 2016, in part due to a warmer winter season than usual, sequestering 1394 gCm−2 over the study period. Precipitation and temperature were critical environmental factors underpinning seasonal CO2 uptake and release. Of critical importance was the net carbon uptake during the non-growing season. In the northeastern region of Brazil, sheep and goat farming, encompassing around 20 million animals, is predominantly a subsistence activity. Forage quality plays a crucial role in animal productivity, posing a complex interplay between plant and animal aspects. The Caatinga biome, vital for livestock in the region, serves as a significant source for animal diet through pastures. This study aimed to conduct a histomorphometric evaluation of sheep rumens in a semi‐extensive system, comparing those feeding on native Caatinga pastures to those on cultivated pastures. Histological processing followed standard protocols, with morphometry focusing on six viable rumen papillae and the submucosa and muscular layer thickness. Statistical correlation analysis revealed morphological differences in papillae across various rumen regions. Morphometric data indicated no significant difference in papillae area between the groups, with average values in Group A surpassing those in Group B, except for width. This study establishes a morphological and morphometric pattern for rumen regions linked to diet types—native or cultivated. The findings not only enhance understanding of the dietary foundation in the Caatinga's extensive system, but also contribute valuable insights for formulating nutritional strategies to enhance sheep production in the region. One of the main constraints for sheep production in tropical and subtropical areas is the lack of knowledge of how to manage erect tropical grasses for lambs. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of pasture height and structure of an erect tropical grass, Aruana Guinea grass (Megathyrsus maximus cv. IZ-5) on the intake and performance of young weaned lambs. The experiment was repeated in two consecutive years. Thirty young weaned lambs were equally assigned, each year, to three pasture heights: (1) Tall 75 cm; (2) Medium 50 cm and (3) Short 25 cm. Herbage mass (HM), pasture height, plant morphological composition, pasture nutritional quality, lambs' average daily gain, gain per hectare and herbage intake were measured. The Short treatment had higher (p < 0.05) leaf:stem ratio (L:S; 2.6 ± 0.27) and average daily gain (ADG; 92 ± 10 g day−1) than the Tall treatment (0.9 ± 0.11 and 40 ± 13 g, respectively). The Medium treatment showed intermediate ADG (69 ± 11 g) and L:S ratio (1.4 ± 0.09). The height of the pasture affects the rate at which the number of stems increases relative to the number of leaves. There was a significant interaction between treatment and period (summer and early autumn) for herbage intake. Intake decreased markedly on the Tall treatment from the first to the second period. This study showed that for a better performance of weaned young lambs during summer–autumn, it is important to maintain tropical swards at a short height (25 cm). With the growing demand for efficient solutions to face the challenges posed by population growth and climate change, the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) emerges as a promising solution for monitoring biophysical and physiological parameters in forage crops due to their ability to collect high-frequency and high-resolution data. This review addresses the main applications of UAVs in monitoring forage crop characteristics, in addition to evaluating advanced data processing techniques, including machine learning, to optimize the efficiency and sustainability of agricultural production systems. In this paper, the Scopus and Web of Science databases were used to identify the applications of UAVs in forage assessment. Based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, the search resulted in 590 articles, of which 463 were filtered for duplicates and 238 were selected after screening. An analysis of the data revealed an annual growth rate of 35.50% in the production of articles, evidencing the growing interest in the theme. In addition to 1086 authors, 93 journals and 4740 citations were reviewed. Finally, our results contribute to the scientific community by consolidating information on the use of UAVs in precision farming, offering a solid basis for future research and practical applications.

Environmental impact evaluation of intensive dairy farming systems has been of growing interest recently as agriculture has several negative influences on the surrounding environment, including eutrophication, declines in biodiversity, and pollution of nearby waterbodies. Dairy production in particular is characterized by the emission of greenhouse gasses (GHG) contributing toward climate change. In this study, the carbon footprint of South African pasture-based dairy farming systems was assessed using a farm-gate life-cycle assessment (LCA) approach. A total of 82 pasture-based dairy farms across South Africa were assessed (2012-2022). The average carbon footprint across all dairy farming systems was 1.36 ± 0.21 kg CO2eq kg-1 fat- and protein-corrected milk produced (FPCM), which is higher than similar studies performed outside South Africa. Enteric fermentation had the largest influence on the carbon footprint, indicating the key role of methane as an emission source in ruminant dominated livestock systems. A difference in milk production efficiency was found between farming systems with the lowest and highest carbon footprints. Pasture-based dairy farming systems must be managed with adaptive management such as regenerative agriculture. Future research agendas should explore modeling approaches to assess the economic and environmental impact of dairy production, formulating a holistic understanding of the system dynamics while also quantifying net carbon emissions or sinks. Diet formulation in a pasture-based dairy system is a challenge as the quality and quantity of available pasture, which generally constitutes the base diet, is constantly changing. The objective of this paper is to cover a more in-depth review of the nutritional characteristics of pasture-based diets, identifying potential system, plant, and animal factors that condition pasture dietary inclusion in dairy cows. In practice, there is a wide diversity of pasture-based systems with predominant to minimal use of pasture requiring a more specific classification that potentially considers the amount and time of access to pasture, access to housing, length of grazing season, seasonality of calving, and level and method of supplementation. There are important differences in the nutritional quality between pasture species and even cultivars. However, under management practices that promote maintenance of pasture in a vegetative state as well as controlling the availability of pasture, it is possible to achieve high dry matter intakes (∼2.9%–3.4% of live weight) of pasture with moderate to high diet energy density, protein supply, and digestibility. The amount of pasture to include in the diet will depend on several factors, such as the type of production system, the cost of supplementary feeds, and the farmer's objectives, but inclusions of ∼40% to 50% of the diet seem to potentially reduce costs while apparently not limiting voluntary feed intake. Considering that there seems to be a continuum of intermediate management systems, a better understanding of the factors inherent to the feed ingredients used, as well as the use of nutrients by cows, and potential interactions between animal × system should be addressed in greater depth. This requires a meta-analysis approach, but given the diversity of the pasture-based system in practice, the existing information is highly fragmented. Accurate and reliable predictions of biomass yield are important for decision-making in pasture management including fertilization, pest control, irrigation, grazing, and mowing. The possibilities for monitoring pasture growth and developing prediction models have greatly been expanded by advances in machine learning (ML) using optical sensing data. To facilitate the development of prediction models, an understanding of how ML techniques affect performance is needed. Therefore, this review examines the adoption of ML-based optical sensing for predicting the biomass yield of managed grasslands. We carried out a systematic search for English-language journal articles published between 2015-01-01 and 2022-10-26. Three coders screened 593 unique records of which 91 were forwarded to the full-text assessment. Forty-three studies were eligible for inclusion. We determined the adoption of techniques for collecting input data, preprocessing, and training prediction models, and evaluating their performance. The results show (1) a broad array of vegetation indices and spectral bands obtained from various optical sensors, (2) an emphasis focus on feature selection to cope with high-dimensional sensor data, (3) a low reporting rate of unitless performance metrics other than R2, (4) higher variability of R2 for models trained on sensor data of larger distance from the pasture sward, and (5) the need for greater comparability of study designs and results. Background: Land management change towards intensive grazing has been shown to alter plant and pollinator communities and the structure of plant-pollinator interactions in different ways across the world. Land-use intensification in Eastern Europe is shifting highly diverse, traditionally managed hay meadows towards intensive pastures, but few studies have examined how this influences plant-pollinator networks. We hypothesized that the effects of intensive grazing on networks will depend on how plant communities and their floral traits change. Methods: We investigated plant and pollinator diversity and composition and the structure of plant-pollinator interactions near Sibiu, Romania at sites that were traditionally managed as hay meadows or intensive pastures. We quantified the identity and abundance of flowering plants, and used transect walks to observe pollinator genera interacting with flowering plant species. We evaluated the effects of management on diversity, composition and several indices of network structure. Results: Pollinator but not plant diversity declined in pastures and both plant and pollinator taxonomic composition shifted. Functional diversity and composition remained unchanged, with rather specialized flowers having been found to dominate in both hay meadows and pastures. Apis mellifera was found to be the most abundant pollinator. Its foraging preferences played a crucial role in shaping plant-pollinator network structure. Apis mellifera thus preferred the highly abundant Dorycnium herbaceum in hay meadows, leading to hay meadows networks with lower Shannon diversity and interaction evenness. In pastures, however, it preferred less abundant and more generalized flower resources. With pollinators being overall less abundant and more generalized in pastures, we found that niche overlap between plants was higher. Discussion: With both hay meadows and pastures being dominated by plant species with similar floral traits, shifts in pollinator preferences seem to have driven the observed changes in plant-pollinator interaction networks. We thus conclude that the effects of grazing on pollinators and their interactions are likely to depend on the traits of plant species present in different management types as well as on the effects of grazing on plant community composition. Temperature sensitivity (TS) of the green‐up date (GUD) of plants is crucial for the prediction of grassland phenology that is important for animal husbandry and pasture management. Spatial variations in the TS are known to reflect interannual temperature variability and/or accumulated precipitation preceding the GUD (pre‐GUD). However, whether spatial TS variations are related to the interaction between pre‐GUD temperature variability and precipitation, which is a potential indicator of frost risk, remains unclear. Furthermore, because the interaction between interannual temperature variability and accumulated precipitation following the GUD (post‐GUD) can exert selection pressure on the plant life cycle, it may also be involved in shaping the spatial TS pattern. Using long‐term ground observations of GUD on the Tibetan Plateau, we show that TS is more negative (greater GUD advance per unit temperature increase) in areas with more pre‐GUD precipitation and low pre‐GUD interannual temperature variability, but less negative in areas with more pre‐GUD precipitation and high pre‐GUD interannual temperature variability. This result is likely because more pre‐GUD precipitation facilitates sprout and leaf development under stable temperature conditions, whereas it increases frost risk when the temperature variability is high. In contrast, TS magnitude decreases with increases in post‐GUD precipitation in areas where post‐GUD interannual temperature variability is low, but increases with post‐GUD precipitation in areas where post‐GUD interannual temperature variability is high. We speculate that because hydrothermal demands for leaf growth from the onset of green‐up to maturity are more easily fulfilled when interannual temperature variability is lower and precipitation is higher, green‐up need not be sensitive to pre‐GUD temperature. In contrast, high post‐GUD precipitation likely aggravates low‐temperature constraints on leaf growth when temperature variability is high, resulting in greater TS to maximize growing season length. These results suggest that spatial TS variations on the Tibetan Plateau are likely associated with adaptations of leaf‐out phenology to background pre‐GUD climatic conditions together with selection pressure from post‐GUD conditions. Livestock activities impact plant rhizomes and roots in the topsoil, particularly in the early stages of spring for a Carex subalpine meadow. Rest–grazing during critical periods can prevent harm to these roots and rhizomes caused by livestock, thereby enhancing the ecological performance of grasslands. In accordance with soil thawing and plant re‐greening, we designated five rest–grazing periods during the spring in a Carex subalpine meadows. The findings demonstrate that the topsoil of 0–10 cm, largely consisting of Carex roots, housed over 70% of root volume and root mass. After the plant had regained its greenery for a certain duration, rest–grazing resulted in higher vertical root length distribution index. With earlier rest–grazing, root growth in deeper soil was promoted, consequently transporting more organic material to the deeper soil. Deferred rest–grazing time has the potential to enhance lateral rooting extent, root resistance to vertical uprooting, and root accumulation in topsoil. It follows that increased root accumulation in the topsoil leads to greater loss of soil nutrients and carbon. Consequently, we recommend rest–grazing prior to soil thawing for Carex subalpine meadows, which encourages Carex root growth and fosters greater biomass accumulation in deeper soils. In order to preserve the biodiversity and cultural heritage in semi-natural pastures, it is important to manage each type of pasture in a way that resembles the historical land use that has shaped the ecosystem. We monitored the grazing regime in 28 pastures in Sweden from 1987 to 2012, and compared their management with the historical grazing regimes. The studied pastures, as well as a majority of the remaining high nature value pastures in Sweden, are located in historical infield areas, where grazing was determined by the system of fencing and use of meadows and arable fields, the so-called cultivation system. Using various sources, we compiled information about the major Swedish cultivation systems and interpreted their significance for the grazing regime. Historical grazing regimes are chacaterized by frequent late grazing and interannual variations in grazing period and grazing pressure. In contrast, the current grazing is rather intense through the entire summer and with little between- year variation. Also, the grazing in the 1980's and 1990's was considerably more varied and less intense than it is today. A pronounced shift in pasture management took place in the late 1990's, and interviews with the farmers show that the shift was mainly caused by the criteria for agri-environment subsidies. Interviews also show that the subsidies have been important for continued use of the semi-natural pastures. We claim that the differences between current and historical grazing regimes constitute a severe threat to pasture biodiversity, and that it is urgent to adjust the eligibility criteria for agri-environment payments. Background: Factors influencing parasitosis in cattle in Bangladesh remain inadequately explored, necessitating a comprehensive investigation for interventions and sustainable livestock farming. Objectives: We conducted this study to estimate the prevalence and distribution of gastrointestinal parasites, exploring their intricate relationship with farm management practices across a spectrum of small‐, medium‐, and large‐scale commercial farms. Methods: We conducted this study in the Chattogram district of Bangladesh. We collected a total of 189 freshly voided faecal samples from different farms. We recorded the age, breed, milking status, sex, body condition score, and anthelmintic use history of the sampled animals. We processed the samples using the direct smear method, with the identification of one egg per sample being considered positive. Results: We estimated the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasite infection in large‐scale (52.1%), medium‐scale (54.5%), and small‐scale farms (70.0%), with statistically significant differences (p ≤ 0.05). Both pregnant and lactating cows, as well as indigenous cattle, were more likely to have gastrointestinal parasites (p ≤ 0.05). The predominant parasites across farms of all sizes were trematodes (Paramphistomum spp. and Schistosomas spp.) and protozoa (Balantidium coli and Coccidia spp.). Conclusion: Poor farm management practices, such as no pasture management and inadequate deworming regimens, may contribute to the elevated prevalence and infection load observed on small‐scale farms. The increased parasitosis in previously dewormed animals can be attributed to the development of anthelmintic resistance against gastrointestinal parasites. Background: Helminths are found in most grazing horses. When high burdens occur, these worms can cause serious disease. Historically, the threat of parasite‐associated pathology led to control programmes that comprised regular all‐group anthelmintic treatments. Unfortunately, this approach encouraged selection for drug resistance, in particular, in cyathostomins. For over 25 years, parasitologists have recommended that prophylactic treatments be avoided and, instead, tests be applied to indicate which helminths are present in populations and at what levels worms are found in, or excreted by, individuals. These evidence‐based approaches have had variable uptake across regions. In the UK, there has been a gradual rise in testing, especially the use of faecal egg count analysis to inform treatment decisions to reduce egg shedding from horses that contribute most to pasture contamination. Antibody‐based tests are also being used to enable assessment of burdens of Anoplocephala perfoliata and cyathostomins in order to provide information on the presence of these parasites in populations. Aim of the article: This article provides an update on how to use diagnostics alongside improved pasture management in equine worm control programmes to reduce anthelmintic treatment frequency. Beef cattle farming is an environmentally friendly food-producing animal husbandry sector that is based largely on pasture and arable by-product feedstuffs. It faces several problems that need to be addressed from a sustainability point of view. Population growth and growing food demand raise concerns about the environmental consequences of expanding beef production using current systems. Consequently, this condition underscores the importance of maintaining an equilibrium between these sustainability pillars and the necessity of adopting more sustainable models. This review article analyzes the most important, recent literary sources dealing with the sustainability of the sector. As a result of the literary synthesis, it has been established that most experts emphasize the two main pillars of sustainability, namely, economic and environmental aspects. The present work directs attention to the third and possible fourth point, the social as well as the cultural aspects of the sustainability of the beef cattle sector, which will be increasingly important to keep in mind in the future. Pastures represent about half of the global agricultural area and productivity losses from weeds are significant. The complex interactions between them and other pasture plants, livestock and the environment imply a need for innovative research that transforms pasture management. To this end, a horizon scan was conducted to identify relevant issues, questions, opportunities, and drivers. The drivers were ranked using three criteria: (1) is this a horizon (is the driver likely to become important in 10–20 years?); (2) will the research require stretchy science (is it currently not well addressed by the science community?); (3) is the research transformative (will successful scientific research in this area lead to significant changes to weed management in pastures?). We identified 11 major issues and 46 subordinate ones. The three highest ranked major issues were: (1) anticipated reductions in access to herbicides; (2) rethinking weed management under an ecosystem services paradigm; (3) responding to shifts in best practice and the regulations that are altering farm system planning to reduce farming's environmental impacts. We conclude that fundamental interdisciplinary research is needed that addresses biosecurity and weed management issues, while reducing the environmental footprint of farming and maintaining productivity. Pasture management oriented towards sustainable intensification and stability of yield must consider the ideal balance between the mass of leaves removed by grazing and the mass left as residual. The former supports high animal production and the later supports an optimum soil–plant carbon balance. This study aimed to evaluate the optimal herbage level from both plant and animal perspectives, through the adjustment of instantaneous herbage accumulation rate as estimated by the Gompertz curve model and short‐term intake rate of sheep. Weekly tall fescue (Schedonorus arundinaceus) herbage accumulation was measured during seven growth periods with initiation dates in October, November and December 2015, and March, April, August and September 2016 and with the initiation dates arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replicates. Total herbage mass, leaf lamina mass, pseudo‐stem + sheath mass, senescent mass, and sward surface height were measured each week. The results demonstrated that a pre‐grazing sward surface height of 22.3 cm of tall fescue promoted the maximum short‐term intake rate of sheep and the optimum herbage accumulation rate in the spring and autumn periods. In general, the convergent point occurred after the maximum instantaneous leaf lamina accumulation rate and before the maximum instantaneous accumulation rate of pseudo‐stem + sheath and senescent material. We suggest the existence of a convergent point in which both primary and secondary production of pastoral ecosystems could be fostered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context: Dairy pasture production is reliant on fertiliser to supply nitrogen (N); however, fertiliser N-use efficiency (FNUE) is low and N can be lost to the environment. Aims: The aim of this study was to track the fate of N fertiliser applied in a pasture system of ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum , temperate grass) oversown into kikuyu (Pennisetum clandestinum , tropical grass). Methods: We used 15N-labelled urea to track the residual plant uptake of a one-off application of 15N over three pasture cuts subsequent to the first cut in the kikuyu growing season from February 2018 to April 2018 (Experiment 1), followed by total soil and plant recoveries of 15N over a 12-month period (Experiment 2). Total N treatment rates were 0, 120, 240 and 480 kg N ha−1 year−1, consisting of application events of 40 kg N ha−1. In Experiment 1, 15N was applied only at the first fertilisation, whereas in Experiment 2, 15N-labelled urea was applied at each fertilisation event. Key results: In Experiment 1, uptake of residual 15N fertiliser in the pasture biomass was <6%. In Experiment 2, FNUE was 29–32% and unaccounted 15N fertiliser was 22–142 kg N ha−1, across the 120, 240 and 480 kg N ha−1 year−1 treatments. Conclusions: Recovery of 15N residual fertiliser did not increase with N rate and was attributed to the mass increase in soil 15N recovery. FNUE in the pasture did not decrease with N rate. Unaccounted 15N increased with N rate. Implications: Existing and alternative N and pasture management strategies such as clover and multi-species pasture need to be implemented and explored to reduce the amount of unaccounted N in dairy pasture production. The Australian pasture-based dairy sector is reliant on application of fertiliser nitrogen, which is not used efficiently by the pasture system. We used 15N-labelled fertiliser to track residual plant uptake and total soil and plant recoveries of 15N. Existing and alternative nitrogen and pasture management strategies need to be implemented and explored to reduce nitrogen loss; however, this must be achieved in a manner that does not impact farmer net profit. Grazing and hay forage crops reduce erosion compared to annual crops, but few studies have compared soil and nutrient loss among grazing systems compared to a control. We evaluated runoff water quality and nutrient loss among three grazing systems and a hay crop production field with manure application (control) using a paired watershed design. Four edge-of-field sites at a research farm in central Wisconsin were managed as hay during calibration (2013–2018) followed by a grazing treatment phase (2018–2020). Grazing treatments of different stocking methods included continuous stocking (CS), primary paddock stocking (PPS), and adaptive multi-paddock stocking (AMPS). Runoff, sediment, nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) loads were monitored year-round. Grazing increased average runoff volume by as much as 1.7-fold depending on stocking method and tended to decrease event mean N and P concentrations. CS had larger mean sediment (2.0-fold), total N (1.9-fold), and total P loads (1.2-fold) compared to the control and had the lowest average pasture forage mass. AMPS had lower N and P loss as a percentage of that applied from manure application/livestock excretion (1.3 and 1.6%, respectively) compared to the control (2.5 and 2.1%), PPS (2.5 and 2.6%), and CS (3.2 and 3.0%). Stocking method had a marked impact on nutrient loss in runoff from these systems, suggesting water quality models should account for pasture management, but nutrient losses from all perennial forage systems were small relative to previous data from annual cropping systems. Understanding economic scenarios is crucial in all production chains. Tropical pastures are Brazil's primary food source for beef cattle production, and current pasture management is not ideal due to land degradation. An economic evaluation assists farmers with improving pasture management using novel techniques, such as nitrogen (N) fertilization, which is straightforward and practical. The economic effects of different N fertilizer levels in beef cattle production were evaluated. This study was conducted over three years (2014/2015, 2015/2016, and 2016/2017) using four concentrations of urea fertilizer (0, 90, 180, and 270 kg N/ha). A principal component analysis and sensitivity analysis were performed using financial data. A financial pattern was observed, with increases in some variables, such as cost-effective operating and cost-total operating from those measuring costs and gross revenue, operating profit, and net income from those estimating revenues. Treatment with 180 kg N/ha fertilizer resulted in increased profitability, payback, internal rate of return, and net present value (at 6% and 12% tax) of 17.76%, 2.79 years, 35.79%, and USD 5926.03 and USD 1854.35, respectively. For this study, the main costs associated with profitability were supplementation, animal purchases, and sale prices. The best treatment to achieve excellent grazing pressure in tropical areas with oxisol is 180 kg/ha per year. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pollinators contribute to the establishment of perennial native forages, but little is known about the effect of grazing practices on pollinator abundance and diversity in livestock pasture ecosystems. Grazing reduces floral resources available to bees and other insects, and as a result, may influence their communities. The main objective of this study was to examine the impact of sheep grazing on bees and other non-bee insects in livestock pasture established with seed mixes of native forb/legume/grass and warm season grasses. Each pasture was divided into two halves (in a split-plot design) using an electric fence in which one plot was grazed and the other plot was non-grazed. Blue vane traps and a pair of yellow and blue pan traps were used for sampling bees and non-bee insects. A diverse array of bees (59 species) and non-bee insects (at least 93 species) were found in the livestock pastures. The abundance, diversity, and evenness of bee and non-bee communities were greater in non-grazed plots as compared to grazed plots. However, species richness, as measured by rates of species accumulation relative to sampling effort, was not different among treatments. Results show that a diverse community of bees and non-bee insects may be found in livestock pasture systems, but reduction in bee and non-bee insect diversity in grazed areas highlight the importance of strategic pasture management to support persistence of native forages and sufficient floral resources for pollinators at relevant scales.

Monitoring livestock feeding behavior may help assess animal welfare and nutritional status, and to optimize pasture management. The need for continuous and sustained monitoring requires the use of automatic techniques based on the acquisition and analysis of sensor data. This work describes an open dataset of acoustic recordings of the foraging behavior of dairy cows. The dataset includes 708 h of daily records obtained using unobtrusive and non-invasive instrumentation mounted on five lactating multiparous Holstein cows continuously monitored for six non-consecutive days in pasture and barn. Labeled recordings precisely delimiting grazing and rumination bouts are provided for a total of 392 h and for over 6,200 ingestive and rumination jaw movements. Companion information on the audio recording quality and expert-generated labels is also provided to facilitate data interpretation and analysis.
