We evaluated the taxonomic status of specimens representing two listed rare species of Pannaria in the Pacific Northwest, P. rubiginosa and P. rubiginella, based on DNA sequences of recently collected samples. We combined those data with new sequences for other Pannaria species in North America and South America as well as all available sequences from the P. rubiginosa and P. lurida groups plus closely related P. hookeri, based on results from initial analyses. Historically, P. rubiginosa and P. rubiginella have been separated in the Pacific Northwest based on the paraphenylenediamine (P) reaction of the cortex versus the medulla. Phylogenetic reconstruction based on ITS sequences demonstrated that both chemotypes belong to a single well-supported clade, and that it belongs to neither P. rubiginosa nor P. rubiginella. Instead, the Pacific Northwest material appears to belong to an undescribed species very similar morphologically to P. rubiginosa, but genetically and geographically distinct from that species and with smaller spores. We describe this new species as Pannaria oregonensis, assigning all of the material from the Pacific Northwest to this taxon, regardless of the location of the P+ reaction. This conclusion is supported by phylogenetic analysis of co-occurring populations of different chemotypes. We recommend removing P. rubiginella from the North American checklist. We also provide a revised key to the North American species of Pannaria, based on our current understanding. Furthermore, based on new sampling of Pannaria species from North and South America, we show a need for revision of the isidiate species of Pannaria, in particular P. tavaresii in the broad sense. The Polylepis australis forests in Central Argentina support a great biodiversity in a relative small area. As a result of this study focusing on the diversity and ecology of the lichen communities of these forests, we present five new species for South America: Rinodina ficta , R. malcolmii , R. obscura , Usnea glabrata , Tetramelas triphragmioides and eight taxa new for Argentina: Calicium abietinum , Erioderma leylandii subsp. leylandii , Leptogium microstictum , Phaeophyscia endococcinodes , Rinodina dolichospora , R. intermedia , Usnea cirrosa and U. flavocardia . Unidentified Usnea species, similar to U. silesiaca , were also characterized and discussed.

Introducción & Objetivos: Como parte de estudios a largo plazo enfocados en la diversidad de hongos liquenizados en la Argentina, se presenta una revisión sobre el género Pannaria para el país. Este género nunca ha sido estudiado en detalle en nuestro territorio. M&M: La morfología, anatomía y química de las especies fue estudiada por medio de la revisión de ejemplares frescos recolectados en el campo y el estudio de diferentes colecciones de herbario, siguiendo protocolos estandarizados. Resultados: Se registraron 15 especies de Pannaria, 3 de ellas por primera vez para la Argentina: P. canoplea, P. malmei y P. tavaresii. Se propone una nueva sinonimia (P. euphylla = P. calophylla). Se presentan descripciones, fotografías e información actualizada sobre la distribución y ecología de las especies, y una clave para su identificación. Conclusiones: La mayoría de las especies mencionadas se encuentran en los bosques andino-patagónicos, con la excepción de P. canoplea, P. malmei y P. tavaresii, que se encontraron en el centro de Argentina, en bosques de altura de Polylepis.

Background and aims: As part of long-term studies focused on the diversity of lichenized fungi in Argentina, a review of the genus Pannaria in the country is presented. This genus have never been studied in detail in our territory. M&M: The morphology, anatomy and chemistry of the species were studied through the review of fresh specimens collected in the field and the study of different herbarium collections, following standardized protocols. Results: Fifteen species of Pannaria are registered for Argentina, 3 of them for the first time: P. conoplea, P. malmei, and P. tavaresii. A new synonym is proposed (P. euphylla = P. calophylla). Descriptions, photographs, and actualized information on their distribution and ecology, and a key for their identification are presented. Conclusions: Most of the mentioned species were found in the Andean-Patagonian forests, with the exception of P. conoplea, P. malmei and P. tavaresii, which were found in central Argentina, in high altitude forests of Polylepis. The present part of the series provides new records of 11 taxa, among them five lichenforming fungi and six bryophytes. One lichen-forming fungus was discovered as new species in Hungary (Parmeliella triptophylla), however it was collected 115 years ago, this species should be considered as an extinct species in Hungary. One bryohyte is newly reported from Hungary (Brachy theciastrum olympicum). The occurrence of one lichen-forming fungus (Parmelia submontana) and two bryophyte species (Palustriella falcata, Ptychostomum pseudotriquetrum var. bimum) was confirmed in Hungary. Amendments to the known distribution of lichen-forming fungi species are reported from Hungary (Cladonia mitis) and Romania (Multiclavula mucida, Xanthoparmelia protomatrae) and three bryophytes from Hungary are also reported (Callicladium haldanianum, Codonoblepharon forsteri, Ephemerum cohaerens). Fuscopannaria leucosticta is a rare lichen that exhibits an apparent specificity for old wet forests in eastern Canada, and may, consequently, be sensitive to anthropogenic disturbance. Estimates of the current distribution and population size are highly uncertain. Effective conservation planning requires improving our understanding of both its current distribution and the factors that influence habitat suitability. We built a MaxEnt distribution model with interpolated climate data, depth to water table mapping, forest inventory data, and herbarium collection data for F. leucosticta in New Brunswick, Canada. We tested model performance via field verifications in high-probability areas with no record of previous surveys. We found F. leucosticta in 13 out of 22 previously unsurveyed locations with a predicted high probability of occurrence. Selected variables included the presence of cedar in the canopy and a lack of recent anthropogenic disturbance, as well as mean annual rainfall and degree days above 0°C. These associations are likely a result of the lichen's low reproductive output and the thermal and hydration requirements of its cyanobacterial photobiont. Recent finds of Leightoniella zeylanensis, classified variously in the Collemataceae and Pannariaceae, enabled us to generate DNA sequence data for investigating its phylogenetic affiliation. Newly generated sequence data from the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and the large subunit of the nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrLSU), the small subunit of the mitochondrial ribosomal (mrSSU) DNA, and the largest subunit of the RNA polymerase II gene (RPB1) indicate that L. zeylanensis is a member of the Pannariaceae, belonging to a strongly supported clade together with Physma, Lepidocollema, and Gibbosporina (= the ‘Physma clade’). With the currently available data, however, relationships within this clade are largely impossible to reconstruct with confidence. Leightoniella zeylanensis was found to possess ellipsoid ascospores surrounded by a thick, gelatinous perispore with pointed ends, supporting a previously published hypothesis that such a perispore type is a synapomorphy for the Physma clade. Icefree, terrestrial, Antarctic ecosystems have a polar desert-like appearance with a scarce vegetation cover, completely dominated by bryophytes and lichens. Knowledge of the rich Antarctic lichen biodiversity, including c. 400 species, is therefore necessary, also for studies of other ecosystem components. The genus Psoroma is partly dominant there, and own ongoing research indicates that many of its members have been misunderstood. The aim of the present study is to describe Psoroma antarcticum as new to science, study its habitat ecology and total distribution, and include a genetic analysis with respect to its internal variation and relationship to other species. The species differs from the closely related species Psoroma hypnorum, in having distinctly cup-shaped apothecia with thalline excipuli without squamules and tomentose lower sides, in having shorter ascospores without apical nodulose extensions and thalli with grey-to-black melanins. It is shown to form a monophyletic clade based on an analysis of the ITS, LSU, and mtSSU loci, and this clade is included in the Psoroma s. str. clade, which includes P. hypnorum, Psoroma paleaceum, Psoroma buchananii, and Psoroma fruticulosum with high statistical support. The new species has its main distribution in the maritime South Shetland and South Orkney Islands of Antarctica, and most samples originate from King George Island, where it is common and an important component in polar desert-like vegetation. Eleven taxa in the lichen family Pannariaceae connected with boreal coniferous or nemoral broad-leaved forests are documented. Notes on their taxonomy, ecology and geography are provided. The new species Austrella isidioidea, which is unique in the genus in having isidioid structures on the thallus lobe ends as well as apothecia lacking a thalline margin, is described from the Falkland Islands. A collection with an identical mtSSU rDNA sequence to A. arachnoidea but with significant morphological differences (viz. a variable apothecial margin ranging from an arachnoid hyphal weft to a corticated regular margin) is reported from Îles Kerguelen. Reports of ‘Psoroma sphinctrinum’ from Palaeotropical areas are shown to represent instead species of the genus Gibbosporina, which is described here as new to science. This genus is superficially similar to tripartite, austral Pannaria species, such as the species now referred to as Pannaria sphinctrina (Mont.) Tuck. ex Hue. A phylogram based on an analysis of the nuclear large subunit rDNA (LSU) locus shows that Gibbosporina is instead a clade in a Pannariaceae branch referred to as the ‘Physma group’, a most unexpected addition to Pannariaceae dealt with by several previous studies. Genera assigned to this group have very contrasting general appearances. However, this diverse group shares distinctly ring-like thalline excipular margins; strongly amyloid internal ascus structures; well-developed perispores which have irregular gibbae and/or nodulose or acuminate apical extensions, but not verrucae; lacks TLC-detectable secondary compounds and have tropical distributions. Gibbosporina is the only tripartite genus in the group, with distinct, nodulose, placodioid, mini-fruticose to mini-foliose cephalodia with a high diversity of Nostoc cyanobionts. The cyanomorphs can apparently exist independently in some cases, although the apothecia on such cephalodia on a specimen from Réunion were unexpectedly found to belong to the chloromorph. The genus and related genera forming the ‘Physma group’ are probably evolutionarily old, and their weak affinity to the remaining part of Pannariaceae, concentrated in the Southern Hemisphere, is discussed. The genus includes 13 known species, and the generitype is Gibbosporina boninensis from the Japanese Ogasawara Islands, originally described as Psoroma boninense and recombined here. The following 12 species are described here as new to science, seven of them with molecular support in an LSU and ITS-based phylogram: Gibbosporina acuminata (Australia, the Philippines), G. amphorella (New Caledonia), G. bifrons (Malaysia, New Caledonia, the Philippines, Solomon Islands), G. didyma (Mauritius, Réunion), G. elixii (Australia), G. leptospora (Australia, Papua New Guinea), G. nitida (Australia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines), G. mascarena (Mauritius, Réunion, Sri Lanka), G. papillospora (the Philippines), G. phyllidiata (Solomon Islands), G. sphaerospora (Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Samoa, and with Psoroma sphinctrinum var. endoxanthellum as a new synonym), and G. thamnophora (Australia and the Philippines). Except for the phyllidiate G. phyllidiata and for G. thamnophora which has cephalodia adapted for vegetative propagation, the species are all primarily fertile. Molecular studies have shown that Psoromidium is well separated from Psoromaria and Degeliella, when including the type species only. The latter generic name is illegitimate and the correct name for the other species sometimes included in Psoromidium is shown to be Psoromaria versicolor (Müll. Arg.) P. M. Jørg. & H. L. Andersen, comb. nov. It is the type species of the genus Psoromaria Nyl. ex Hue. The inclusion of Degeliella rosulata in Psoromaria is unresolved, according to the molecular evidence. However, its characters (except the photobiont) match those of Psoromaria, rather than those of the other species with which it groups. Molecular inferences of three loci within a phylogenetic framework of a subset of the Pannariaceae confirm that the genus Kroswia is nested within the genus Fuscopannaria. The formal combination of the type species of Kroswia into Fuscopannaria is therefore made here, and Kroswia is reduced into synonymy with the latter genus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim The rare lichen species Staurolemma omphalarioides is known mainly from the lowlands and coastal areas of the Mediterranean region but has also been found in coastal parts of central Norway. Despite extensive search efforts by experts for more than half a century, the species has been found nowhere in the gap. Our aim is to identify the most plausible explanation for this anomalous distribution by combining genetic analysis of archived specimens with distribution modelling. Location Europe, western Middle East and North Africa (but mainly the Mediterranean and Atlantic floristic regions). Methods We used multi-locus DNA sequencing of archived specimens and phylogenetic and network analyses to reveal potential genetic lineages within S. omphalarioides. We used georeferenced specimens and bioclimatic variables to model the distributions of the species and two genetic lineages, and to find the main environmental correlates of the distributions. Results Our phylogeographical results show that S. omphalarioides contains genetic variation that correlates with geographical distance, although with a few shared haplotypes across disjunct ranges. Distributions of the species as well as the two genetic lineages are non-random. Distribution models predict occurrences of the species as well as one of its genetic lineages outside the current range of the species. Main conclusions Our results indicate that neither the species nor its component genetic lineages have reached their potential distributions. Shared haplotypes across disjunct distributions, and absence from regions with suitable refugial habitats along the Atlantic coast of Western Europe, support long-distance dispersal, rather than vicariance, as the primary cause for the current distribution of the species. We estimated phylogeny in the lichen-forming ascomycete family Pannariaceae. We specifically modelled spatial (across-site) heterogeneity in nucleotide frequencies, as models not incorporating this heterogeneity were found to be inadequate for our data. Model adequacy was measured here as the ability of the model to reconstruct nucleotide diversity per site in the original sequence data. A potential non-orthologue in the internal transcribed spacer region (ITS) of Degelia plumbea was observed. We propose a revised generic classification for the Pannariaceae, accepting 30 genera, based on our phylogeny, previously published phylogenies, as well as available morphological and chemical data. Four genera are established as new: Austroparmeliella (for the ‘Parmeliella’ lacerata group), Nebularia (for the ‘Parmeliella’ incrassata group), Nevesia (for ‘Fuscopannaria’ sampaiana), and Pectenia (for the ‘Degelia’ plumbea group). Two genera are reduced to synonymy, Moelleropsis (included in Fuscopannaria) and Santessoniella (non-monophyletic; type included in Psoroma). Lepidocollema, described as monotypic, is expanded to include 23 species, most of which have been treated in the ‘Parmeliella’ mariana group. Homothecium and Leightoniella, previously treated in the Collemataceae, are here referred to the Pannariaceae. Lichen symbioses in the Pannariaceae associate an ascomycete and either cyanobacteria alone (usually Nostoc; bipartite thalli) or green algae and cyanobacteria (cyanobacteria being located in dedicated structures called cephalodia; tripartite thalli) as photosynthetic partners (photobionts). In bipartite thalli, cyanobacteria can either be restricted to a well-delimited layer within the thallus (‘pannarioid’ thalli) or spread over the thallus that becomes gelatinous when wet (‘collematoid’ thalli). We studied the collematoid genera Kroswia and Physma and an undescribed tripartite species along with representatives of the pannarioid genera Fuscopannaria, Pannaria and Parmeliella. Molecular inferences from 4 loci for the fungus and 1 locus for the photobiont and statistical analyses within a phylogenetic framework support the following: (a) several switches from pannarioid to collematoid thalli occurred and are correlated with photobiont switches; the collematoid genus Kroswia is nested within the pannarioid genus Fuscopannaria and the collematoid genus Physma is sister to the pannarioid Parmeliella mariana group; (b) Nostoc associated with collematoid thalli in the Pannariaceae are related to that of the Collemataceae (which contains only collematoid thalli), and never associated with pannarioid thalli; Nostoc associated with pannarioid thalli also associate in other families with similar morphology; (c) ancestors of several lineages in the Pannariaceae developed tripartite thalli, bipartite thalli probably resulting from cephalodia emancipation from tripartite thalli which eventually evolved and diverged, as suggested by the same Nostoc present in the collematoid genus Physma and in the cephalodia of a closely related tripartite species; Photobiont switches and cephalodia emancipation followed by divergence are thus suspected to act as evolutionary drivers in the family Pannariaceae. We investigated habitat attributes related to the occupancy of the globally rare and endangered epiphytic lichen, Erioderma pedicellatum, in a newly discovered (2009) population center in Denali National Park and Preserve (DNPP), Alaska. We measured forest, tree and epiphytic lichen community characteristics on eighty-five systematically selected plots in four study areas. We aggregated these data at three spatial scales (tree, plot and study area) at which to compare E. pedicellatum occupancy (probability of occurrence) and abundance to environmental covariates. We observed 2,035 E. pedicellatum thalli on 278 individual Picea glauca stems. The species occurred in 61% of the plots measured. Occupancy of E. pedicellatum at the individual tree-scale was influenced by stem diameter, study area, live crown length, plot P. glauca basal area, plot canopy cover and distance to open water. Our models for E. pedicellatum occupancy at the plot-scale identified study area, P. glauca density, deciduous basal area (Betula neoalaskana and Populus trichocarpa), and tall shrub cover (≥ 200 cm in height) as significant covariates. Our estimates of the DNPP population size increase the world population by at least tenfold to approximately 100,000 thalli. We suggest important topics for further research on E. pedicellatum. Pannaria minutiphylla Elvebakk and P. pulverulacea Elvebakk are described here as new to science. Both species belong to the panaustral P. sphinctrina (Mont.) Tuck. ex Hue complex. Their spores, however, are more long-ellipsoid and much less verrucose than those of P. sphinctrina itself, and the species are therefore not considered to be phyllidiate and sorediate counterparts, respectively, of the latter. Pannaria minutiphylla disperses with phyllidia, which are distinctly smaller and not as erect as those of a similar Australian species, P. phyllidiata Elvebakk. Pannaria pulverulacea has the smallest vegetative propagules within this species group. They are referred to as soredia here, although they are partly corticated. This species also has the widest distribution, including wet forests of southern South America, south-eastern Australia, and from Northland to Campbell Island in New Zealand. Pannaria minutiphylla has the same distribution and often grows together with P. pulverulacea, except in southern South America, where some related material has still not been sufficiently studied. Both species are very common within their distribution areas, and previously have mostly been identified as P. microphyllizans. Pannaria howeana and P. streimannii are described here as new to science. Both species are restricted to the isolated Lord Howe Island in Australia. The former is known only from one collection and the latter from two sites. Pannaria howeana is a primarily fertile species, with rather broad lobes and few rhizines restricted to the central part of the lower side of the thallus. The lower sides of the lobes have a pattern of characteristic radiating hyphae and narrowly recurved margins similar to the New Zealand lichen P. araneosa (C. Bab.) Hue, which is considered to be its closest relative. Pannaria streimannii is a phyllidiate counterpart of P. howeana. Both species share a new chemosyndrome consisting of porphyrilic acid in combination with vicanicin and leprolomin. Local endemic species are uncommon among tripartite Pannaria species, and the coarse vegetative propagules of both species appear to be an adaptation to local dispersal on a small, isolated island. The new species Parmeliella borbonica is described. It belongs in a small group of species, which, unlike all other Parmeliella species except those of the Parmeliella mariana group, have thalline squamulose margins of the apothecia, and are thus superficially reminiscent of Pannaria. The group is mainly Indo-pacific. A key to the species is given. Parmeliella borbonica appears to be an addition to the many remarkable endemic members of the Pannariaceae found in Réunion which has retained old Gondwana elements, as its lowland forests have not been destroyed as much as those in the neighbouring region. The very rare Coccocarpia imbricascens Nyl. was found as new to the island, and the rare endemic Pannaria multifida P. M. Jørg close to its type locality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Collections from high altitudes (3840-5100 m a.s.l.) have added several species to the Pannariaceae of Ecuador: Fuscopannaria praetermissa, Pannaria hookeri, Psoroma paleaceum and Psoroma tenue are new to the Andes, and phytogeographic consequences of these are discussed. The following new taxa are described: Parmeliella corallina P. M. Jørg. & Palice, Parmeliella psoromoides P. M. Jørg. & Palice, Psoroma cinnamomeum ssp. andinum P. M. Jørg. & Palice and Santessoniella macrospora P. M. Jørg. & Palice. They are part of a high-andean element which is not well known and is indicative of a migration route between the polar regions. In addition, two species with associated cyanobacteria, as the primary or secondary symbiont, are reported for the first time from South America: Thelignya lignyota (Wahlenb.) P. M. Jørg. & Henssen and Pilophorus cereolus (Ach.) Th. Fr, both originating from the Northern Hemisphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Psoroma microlepideum is reduced to a synonym of P. fuegiense. The species differs in several characters from P. pholidotum, and it overlaps geographically with the latter, which is neotypified here. These two species are now placed in the new southern South American genus Psorophorus, differing from Psoroma s. str. in being corticolous, having adpressed squamules on a distinct, dark prothallus, lacking melanins, having a thin cortical layer and a simpler IKI+ apical ascus structure. Two other widespread, panaustral species are the only ones in Pannariacae containing usnic acid. The primarily fertile species has been known as Psoroma pholidotoides, but the type contains pannarin rather than usnic acid, and the correct name for the primarily fertile taxon with usnic acid is Psoroma contextum Stirt. This is together with P. soccatum R. Br. ex Crombie is now placed in the new genus Xanthopsoroma. In addition to usnic acid, both species have a series of distinct terpenoids, some in major quantities. Like Psorophorus, they are corticolous, but have long, more or less nodulose, apical perispore extensions, and an IKI+ apical ascus tube structure which is longer and thinner, including a diffuse tholus reaction, and often an external apical sheet. Phylogenetically, these two genera are shown to be monophyletic and different from Psoroma s. str. based on an analysis of ITS and nrLSU rDNA. This analysis also shows that among the ten species focused on in this study, nine species (two in Xanthopsoroma, two in Psorophorus and five in Psoroma s. str.) are monophyletic, based on two to six sequences of each species. Degelia cyanoloma (Schaer.) H. H. Blom & L. Lindblom is resurrected from synonymy and elevated from varietal rank to species. The taxon was earlier referred to D. plumbea (Lightf.) P. M. Jørg. & P. James, however, several discontinuous character states distinguish the two species. Degelia cyanoloma is characterized morphologically by having a large thallus that is pale greyish when dry, lobes that are composed of consecutive trough-shaped segments with an upper surface without squamules, no isidia or soredia, and apothecia discs that are dark reddish brown to blackish. Degelia cyanoloma has a euoceanic distribution and is known from western Europe (Norway, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Portugal, Spain). Based on results from studies of morphology, we hypothesize that D. atlantica (Degel.) P. M. Jørg. & P. Abstract: Many lichen fungi form symbioses with filamentous Nostoc cyanobacteria, which cause the lichen to swell and become extremely gelatinous when moist. Within the Lecanoromycetes, such gelatinous lichens are today mainly classified in the Collemataceae (Peltigerales, Ascomycota). We performed Bayesian MCMC, maximum likelihood, and maximum parsimony analyses of three independent markers (mtSSU rDNA, nuLSU rDNA, and RPB1), to improve our understanding of the phylogeny and classification in the Peltigerales, as well as the evolution of morphological characters that have been used for classification purposes in this group. The Collemataceae and the non-gelatinous Pannariaceae are paraphyletic but can be re-circumscribed as monophyletic if Leciophysma, Physma, Ramalodium and Staurolemma are transferred to the Pannariaceae. The gelatinous taxa transferred to the Pannariaceae deviate from other Collemataceae in having simple ascospores, and several also have a ring-shaped exciple as in other Pannariaceae, rather than the disc-shaped exciple found in the typical Collemataceae. Both Collema and Leptogium are non-monophyletic. The re-circumscribed Collemataceae shares a distinct ascus type with the sister group Placynthiaceae and the Coccocarpiaceae, whereas Pannariaceae includes a variety of structures. All Pannariaceae have one-celled ascospores, whereas all Collemataceae have two- or multi-celled spores. Reconstructions of the number of character state transformations in exciple structure, thallus gelatinosity, and ascus apex structure indicate that the number of transformations is distinctly higher than the minimum possible. Most state transformations in the exciple took place from a ring-shaped to a disc-shaped exciple. Depending on the reconstruction method, most or all transformations in thallus structure took place from a non-gelatinous to a gelatinous thallus. Gains and losses of internal structures in the ascus apex account for all or a vast majority of the number of transformations in the ascus, whereas direct transformations between asci with internal structures appear to have been rare. The most abundant metabolite of the eucalyptus leaf spot pathogen Mycosphaerella cryptica was extracted from agar cultures. The structure of the compound was elucidated by detailed studies of NMR and MS data and by comparison with derivatives. The compound is a previously undescribed diphenylether structurally related to pannaric acid found in lichens. Culture extracts from another species of Mycosphaerella isolated from the same environment yielded 5-hydroxymethylfuran-3-carboxylic acid, a furan acidic compound previously isolated from a basidiomycete fungus. Assays for bioactivity of these metabolites revealed no evidence for antimicrobial activity. Some phytotoxicity was seen on newly emerged leaves of Eucalyptus globulus, but not on juvenile or adult leaves, when treated with either metabolite. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The taxonomy of the genus Psoroma (lichenized Ascomycota) is currently under revision, as it has long been recognized as heterogeneous. The aim of the present study was to reconstruct the phylogeny of Psoroma and related genera. The ITS region of nu-rDNA and the mtSSU rDNA from 22 collections of Psoroma and Pannaria were amplified. Sequences from GenBank were also used. For the phylogenetic analysis, direct optimization was implemented, using the program POY, and standard MP using PAUP. Both analyses resulted in similar trees. Two main clades were obtained, one including Santesoniella and most Psoroma species and the other including Pannaria and two Psoroma species, indicating that Psoroma is polyphyletic. Based on its phylogenetic position and ascus type, P. implexum is transferred to the genus Pannaria, and the new combination P. implexa is proposed. Psoroma cephalodinum clusters with Parmeliella and Degelia as a basal group within the Pannariaceae. The ascus apex of P. cephalodinum has a strong amyloid reaction revealing a compact cap-shaped plug. This differs from most of the ascus apical structures observed in the family. Both ascus internal structure and phylogenetic position suggest that P. cephalodinum is distantly related to Psoroma or Pannaria, and thus a new genus Joergensenia is proposed. The new genus Vahliella is recognized as a genus since molecular studies have shown that the subgenus Mzcropannaria of Fuscopannaria differs so much from this genus that it cannot even be placed in the Pannariaccae. While its family position remains unclear, it is certainly best established as a genus, as it is recognizable also on morphological and chemical characters. Unlike the mainly warm-temperate genus Fuscopannaria, it is restricted to cold-temperate regions. Presently it is known to contain eight species, a key to which is given. The following new combinations are introduced: Vahliella adnata (P. M. Jorg. & Upreti), Vahliella atlantica (P. M. Jørg. & P. W. The new species Parmeliella subfuscata A. Dube & Makhija, belonging in the P. mariana group, is described. It is recognized by its squamulose, loosely attached, spreading, brownish thallus with cylindrical, branched isidia, indistinct, black prothallus of slightly projecting rhizohyphae, and its apothecia with an unusual, fresh green coloured epithecium and proper exciple. Pannaria leproloma is shown to be a New Zealand endemic, and is characterized by coarse isidiomorphs/isidia, a high frequency of apothecia and the presence of two cytotoxic scabrosin esters, previously unknown from Pannariaceae, and present in 40% of the samples studied. It is not a member of the Pannaria sphinctrina group, as previously thought. It has frequently been confused with a related, finely sorediate, very sparingly fertile species, which lacks scabrosin esters in more than 99% of the specimens studied. This latter species is widely distributed both in southern South America (where it is one of the most common corticolous lichens), south-eastern areas of Australia and in New Zealand. New collections from inner China have revealed further species in the genus Fuscopannaria: two new species, Fuscopannaria cyanogranulosa P. M. Jorg. and Fuscopannaria obtegens P. M. Jorg. are described and Fuscopannaria subgemrnascens Upreti & Divakar is reported as new to Sichuan. A key to the sorediate species of the region is provided. The first fertile specimen of Kroswia gemmascens has been discovered, much further west than previously known, showing the genus to be related most closely to Fuscopannaria despite its gelatinous, homoiomerous thallus. Some collections from the Mulu region in Borneo have added to our knowledge of the difficult lowland taxa of Parmeliella, two of which proved to be new: Parmeliella pluniosella P. M. Jørg. and Parmeliella polydactyla P. M. Jerg. & Coppins, both being quite unusual in containing "violet" Nostoc as cyanobiont. There is a surprising number of Asian collections with brightly coloured medullas: red-orange material has been named several times and is correctly referred to as Parmeliella endomilta Vain. The specimens with a yellow medulla are named Parmeliella endolutea P. M. Jørg., nom. nov. A key to the brightly coloured species of Parmeliella concentrated in SE Asia is given. Pannaria isidiosa sp. nov. is newly described from montane forests in New South Wales, Australia. It is characterized by abundant globose to coralloid isidia, long-ellipsoid spores with a verrucose and citriform perispore. It is related to P. xanthomelana, but in addition to pannarin and porphyrilic acid, it contains methylplacodiolic acid and a chemosyndrome of four unidentified terpenoids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two Psoroma species, P. calophyllum and P. contortum, described from southern South America have been studied. The morphology, anatomy and chemistry of the two species are described together with notes on their ecology and taxonomy. Pannaria isabellina is transferred from Psoroma to Pannaria as it lacks the amyloid apical ascus structure characteristic of Psoroma. However, it has an isolated position within Pannaria because of its lichenized squamules developing horizontally on a thin, filmy prothallus, and its thallus chemistry characterized by the norstictic acid chemosyndrome. It also has a sclerenchymatous epicortex and a characteristic perispore with gibbose wall swellings and long flagella-like apical extensions; both characters are not often found and are still insufficiently studied within the genus Pannaria. The gelatinous, long flagella-like apical extensions of the perispores probably serve to anchor the ascospores to thin and vertical substrata; the species seems to be concentrated in forest margins of evergreen forests along the coast of Chile, except in the Valdivian rainforest region where it extends further east. Abstract: The African continent is shown to contain only 38 species in the lichen family Pannariaceae , all of which are listed in the conclusion. Four new species are described: Pannaria planiuscula (Republic of South Africa [RSA] and Kenya), Pannaria squamulosa (RSA), Parmeliella dactylifera (RSA), and Parmeliella triptophylloides (Kenya). Four species are recorded as new to the continent: Pannaria centrifuga P.M. Jørg. (RSA), Pannaria ramosii Vain. (Tanzania), Parmeliella imbricatula (Müll. Arg.) P. M. Jørg. (RSA), and Psoroma fruticulosum James & Henssen (RSA). The following taxa described from Africa prove to be synonyms: Pannaria cameroonensis Dodge (=Parmeliella stylophora), Pannaria capensis Stirt. A characteristic, sterile lichen genus with homoiomerous thallus containing terpenoids is described, with one subtropical species, Kroswia crystalliferum sp. nov., occurring scattered in Africa from Kenya south to the Cape, southern India (with Sri Lanka) and Taiwan. Another temperate species, Kroswia gemmascens (Nyl.) comb. nov., is restricted to Eastern Asia. In spite of its gelatinous, homoiomerous thallus, the genus appears to belong to the Pannariaceae. The phylogeny of the family Pannariaceae (Lecanorales, lichenized Ascomycota) was investigated using ITS1–5.8S–ITS2 nuclear ribosomal DNA sequences representing 21 species. Phylogenetic estimations were performed using parsimony and a Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) tree sampling procedure. Several phylogenetic null hypotheses were tested, also using MCMC. The results indicate that Pannariaceae, as currently treated, is polyphyletic and that Degelia sect. Amphiloma, Fuscopannaria subg. Micropannaria, and Moelleropsis s.str. do not belong in the family. The inclusion of Parmeliella in the Pannariaceae could not be rejected, although it falls outside the family in the optimal trees. Psoroma, Santessoniella, Protopannaria, Fuscopannaria subg. Fuscopannaria, Moelleropsis s.str., and Pannaria unequivocally belong to the family. The Pannaria sphinctrina group belongs in Pannaria despite its green-algal photobiont. Protopannaria pezizoides is not, as sometimes treated, a Pannaria, although a relationship with Psoroma could not be ruled out. In the optimal trees, Moelleropsis s.str. is nested inside Fuscopannaria subg. Fuscopannaria and Santessoniella inside Psoroma, but null hypotheses of their independence from these genera could not be rejected. Pannaria cannot be divided into two monophyletic subgenera, Pannaria and Chryopannaria.
