The Pacific Coast tick (Dermacentor occidentalis Marx, 1892) is a frequently encountered and commonly reported human-biting tick species that has been recorded from most of California and parts of southwestern Oregon, southcentral Washington, and northwestern Mexico. Although previous investigators have surveyed populations of D. occidentalis for the presence of Rickettsia species across several regions of California, populations of this tick have not been surveyed heretofore for rickettsiae from Baja California, Oregon, or Washington. We evaluated 1,367 host-seeking, D. occidentalis adults collected from 2015 to 2022 by flagging vegetation at multiple sites in Baja California, Mexico, and Oregon and Washington, United States, using genus- and species-specific assays for spotted fever group rickettsiae. DNA of Rickettsia 364D, R. bellii, and R. tillamookensis was not detected in specimens from these regions. DNA of R. rhipicephali was detected in D. occidentalis specimens obtained from Ensenada Municipality in Baja California and southwestern Oregon, but not from Washington. All ompA sequences of R. rhipichephali that were amplified from individual ticks in southwestern Oregon were represented by a single genotype. DNA of the Ixodes pacificus rickettsial endosymbiont was amplified from specimens collected in southwestern Oregon and Klickitat County, Washington; to the best of our knowledge, this Rickettsia species has never been identified in D. occidentalis. The distribution, abundance and seasonal activity of vector species, such as ticks and mosquitoes, are key determinants of vector-borne disease risk, and are strongly influenced by abiotic and habitat conditions. Despite the numerous species of tick vectors in the heavily populated North American West Coast, all but Ixodes pacificus, the primary vector of the Lyme disease spirochete, is poorly characterized with regard to seasonal activity patterns and fine scale drivers of distribution and abundance, particularly in heavily populated regions of southern California. This lack of knowledge inhibits both scientific understanding and public health efforts to minimize vector exposure and risk of pathogen transmission to humans. Here we address this gap by characterizing the abiotic and habitat drivers of the distribution, abundance, and diversity of the vector tick community using fine scale temporal surveys over two seasons (2014 and 2015) across coastal and inland regions of Santa Barbara County, CA. We also characterize patterns of seasonal activity of the more common vector species to understand seasonality in risk of vector exposure, and specifically focus on human encounter risk using standardized tick drags as our method of collection. Leveraging plot-level habitat and abiotic variables in partial least squares regression analysis, we find the seven different vector species collected in this study have divergent drivers of activity and abundance. For example, I. pacificus is strongly associated with dense forest habitats and cool and moist microclimates, while Dermacentor occidentalis and Dermacentor variabilis, competent vectors of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, were found to be more tolerant of higher average temperatures and more open habitats. These results suggest that I. pacificus may be expected to experience reductions in geographic distribution and seasonal activity under projected land cover and climate change in coastal southern California, while D. occidentalis may experience more limited effects. We discuss implications for changing tick-borne disease risk associated with pathogens transmitted by Ixodes as well as Dermacentor species ticks in the western US, and contrast these predictions with eastern North America. Background. Four spotted fever group rickettsiae (SFGR) are known to infect humans in the United States. A member of the SFGR designated 364D and detected in Dermacentor occidentalis ticks has not previously been identified as a human pathogen. Methods. An 80-year-old man from a rural northern California community presented with an eschar on his forearm. A skin punch biopsy of the lesion was evaluated by immunohistochemistry and molecular analysis. Serum specimens obtained from the patient and 3 other area residents with similar illnesses were tested by immunofluorescence and Western immunoblot for antibodies to SFGR. Ticks were collected near the patient's residence and tested for SFGR. Results. Abundant intracellular rickettsiae and fragmented rickettsial antigens were observed in the mononuclear inflammatory infiltrates of the biopsy. Nucleotide sequences of DNA fragments amplified from the biopsy were identical to those of 364D. Convalescent sera from all four patients exhibited high immunoglobulin G titers to Rickettsia rickettsii, Rickettsia rhipicephali, and 364D antigens. Three adult D. occidentalis were positive for 364D, R. rhipicephali, and an unidentified Rickettsia species. Conclusions. This is the first confirmation of human disease associated with the SFGR 364D, which was likely transmitted by D. occidentalis. Although the patients described here presented with a single cutaneous eschar as the principal manifestation, the full spectrum of illness associated with 364D has yet to be determined. Possible infection with 364D or other SFGR should be confirmed through molecular techniques in patients who present with "spotless" Rocky Mountain spotted fever or have serum antibodies to R. rickettsii with group-specific assays.
