This article explores multilevel governance networking and innovation to better understand how nature-based public health can be promoted at a grassroot level within an urban context. Hence, the leading research question examines the extent of networking and collaboration within state and municipal policymaking and the implementation of socially inclusive nature-based activities among urban youths conducted by local volunteer organisations. Multilevel networking and collaboration represent an analytical alternative to bottom-up and top-down strategies, which dominate the socio-political policies of outdoor studies in several countries. The exploration draws on empirical research conducted in 2020 based on a qualitative design. A website review was carried out to analyse facilitated nature-based health innovations embracing educational activities, leadership, and organisation run by local volunteer organisations targeting youth aged 6–19 across Oslo, Norway's capital. The investigation was substantiated by twenty-eight interviews with leaders of volunteer organisations and primary healthcare coordinators in five of Oslo's fifteen city districts, exploring their organisational experiences and reflections on nature-based innovations as a measure to promote health. The governance approach revealed several paradoxes and ambiguities in policy and practice. For example, there is a gap between the policy vision and available resources. There is also a need to understand better the complex networks and collaboration of public agencies and dedicated volunteers, their organisations, and interests. Furthermore, the continuous professionalisation of the voluntary sector and its significance in building a governance infrastructure that increases the capability of ongoing nature-based activity innovations need to be developed to meet policy goals and young people's needs and interests. Social inequalities were reported among those participating in nature-based activities and those who were not engaged. This pattern follows the well-documented spatial distribution of socioeconomic disparities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Public spaces where alcohol and other drugs are openly used and marginal citizens gather, exist in many Nordic cities. The biggest open drug scenes in the Nordic countries are in cities like Oslo and Copenhagen; however, there are smaller scenes in other cities and suburbs, centered around shed-like structures, offering some form of shelter and a designated space for marginalized people involved in heavy drug and alcohol use who hang out in public space. In this paper, we investigate, in a comparative perspective, the characteristics and functions of smaller open alcohol and drug scenes, and how their existence is negotiated in the local community and among the citizens using them. Methods and material: This article is a comparative case-study based on data from fieldwork (participating observation and interviews) carried out in two specific, yet somewhat similar, locations in Denmark and Norway between 2017 – 2022. A crosscase analysis was performed to identify commonalities and differences. Results: Smaller open alcohol and drug scenes are non-regulated spaces of ambivalence and ongoing negotiation in local communities. Based on the data across locations, they represent possibilities for informal care and community for citizens in marginalized situations. The scenes are further, across location, characterized by a mutual agreement of performing decency, e.g., not allowing minor drug sale/use. Discussion: To enable public spaces as smaller alcohol and drug scenes can play a role in reducing harm for marginalized citizens. Communication and dialogue between citizens using an open drug scene and the wider community may help reduce stigma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OUTDOOR life - Abstract
This paper aims to investigate the depiction of Irish rural life in selected poems by W. B. Yeats and Patrick Kavanagh. Modern Irish poetry presents two contrasting perspectives on the portrayal of rural Ireland. Some poets like W. B. Yeats, Derek Mahon, and Seamus Heaney, along with other leading Irish poets, romanticize the Irish countryside, portraying it as charming, magnificent, and idyllic. These poets prefer to live in tune with nature, tempted by its pastoral landscape and inspired by its idealized tranquility. In contrast, other modern Irish poets, including Patrick Kavanagh, Eavan Boland, Michael Hartnett, and many others, reject this idealized vision of the countryside. Instead, they offer a stark portrayal of rural Ireland, exposing its harsh realities and revealing the poverty, struggles, and hardships encountered by Irish peasants. This article, accordingly, seeks to explore these two different literary traditions within modern Irish poetry, with a focus on W. B. Yeats and Patrick Kavanagh as representatives of opposing attitudes. Specifically, “The Lake Isle of Innisfree” by W. B. Yeats and The Great Hunger by Patrick Kavanagh serve as the concentration for this study. In reaching its conclusions, the article finally reveals the divergent perspectives portrayed within the two poems, highlighting how Yeats and Kavanagh employ distinct poetic techniques to present their attitudes, sharply contrasting each other. The article focuses on Les Creuniers, a location depicted in Proust's "À l'ombre des jeunes filles en fleurs," where the cliffs are described in conjunction with clifftop picnics and Elstir's paintings. It mentions Proust extolled this place as a path opening to a view akin to a balcony over the sea, and its reconstitution using archive documents reveals analogies with passages in "La Recherche."

For many Americans, Christmas became inextricably linked to a celebration of the outdoor life in the latter decades of the nineteenth century. Earlier generations of genteel folk in New York had taken the festival indoors, setting a fashion for many of the customs recognised to this day, and shaping a celebration of family and piety, home and consumption. But Christmas did not stay indoors forever. Appealing to a growing, broad middle-class interest in outdoor sports during the Gilded Age of the 1870s-1890s, a proliferating range of magazines shaped new ideas about leisure and recreation, and in festive special issues, about Christmas too. Sitting by the fire in dark and chilly December, readers of magazines like Forest and Stream or Outing could find encouragement to enjoy an active, outdoor Christmas Day, to venture into the winter landscape on skate or sled perhaps, or equally to lose themselves in stories of sport and adventure that could take them on imagined escapes, to the icy forests and mountains of the North, to sunny Florida and California, or to faraway lands, overseas. In these ways outdoor-sports magazines brought to mind wonderlands of thrill and enchantment. In the process, they reimagined Christmas for the twentieth century and the age of individualism and play, leisure and consumption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: This study, based on the self-determination theory (SDT) by Deci and Ryan (1985), investigates the motivation among outdoor life students at universities and colleges in Norway. It also examines how students score on basic psychological needs, such as autonomy, competence, and relatedness, and their frequency of engagement in outdoor activities. The significance of the nature experience and the activity itself for the outdoor life students were analyzed, along with the extent to which the SDT can explain these two variables. Material and methods: The participants completed two standardized questionnaires. Results: The results showed a high degree of internal motivation and the most autonomous forms of external motivation, in addition to a high score on basic psychological needs. The students state that both nature experience and activity are important to them, with the former being the most important. Conclusions: The most active students in outdoor activities state that competence is an important basic psychological need. The importance of natural experience is mainly explained by a high score on self-determination as a psychological need, in addition to a high score on the most autonomous external motive: integrated regulation. Internal motivation is the main explanation for the importance of the activity for students.

Outdoor recreation is a popular leisure activity many consider to be an environmentally friendly practice that promotes care for the natural world. This study uses a survey to investigate transportation use and gear purchasing habits among Norwegians who participate regularly in outdoor life. Using a hybrid life-cycle assessment, it was estimated that the average participant releases between 3.4 and 4.7 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions per year due to outdoor recreation activities. This is equal to around one fifth of the average Norwegian's yearly greenhouse gas emissions and is more than double the per capita boundary required to limit global temperature rise to 2 degrees Celsius. Regression analysis highlights level of disposable income as the best predictor of environmental load. This indicates that the façade of a green lifestyle based on ecological values masks the global environmental consequences of excessive consumption related to outdoor recreation activities. By the mid-1990s, the docks at Northrop's marina held upward of 50 flats boats, with a dozen skiffguides operating there, a testament to the skiff's usefulness in the region. At the 1986 Miami Boat Show, Northrop approached Scott Deal, president of Maverick Boats, and inquired about becoming a dealer. After the fishing revolution he started in the Norwalk Islands region, Northrop has gone from being the first skiff guide in the Northeast to the last in that area of the Sound, as the others have all retired or moved on. This article is based on a selection of Norwegian girls' accounts of backcountry, freeride skiing and mountain biking to better understand how they form and are formed by cultural identity standards. The study is conducted by using the precepts of discourse analysis, which have language and social communication as the central component of the social world. The girls' narratives occupy an ambiguous space that attempts to bridge the gap between their own and other people's perceptions of their identity, gender expression and experience in outdoor adventure sports. Being a skier functions as an anchoring point in their identity formation, binding together incredible experiences out in nature and the recurrent fear of failure. The joy, desire and feeling of freedom in the mountain are challenged by an intense pressure to perform. These ambivalent, sometimes even contradictory experiences are a prominent element of the narrative material produced and analysed in the article. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The only guide you need to prepare for the dangerous effects of climate change. The world has changed, and impacts of global warming means weather events like extreme heat, wildfires, hurricanes, and droughts are now being felt by all of us. We can ignore climate change no longer and must prepare ourselves to survive in new conditions. The key to surviving extreme weather events is to understand them from a practical perspective and then plan and execute tactical responses. In Surviving Extreme Weather, Mykel Hawke, a renowned survivalist and bestselling author of Hawke's Special Forces Survival Handbook and Hawke's Green Beret Survival Manual, and British meteorologist Jim N. R. Dale, share their expert knowledge and personal experiences while offering valuable insights into the science behind our new weather and how to apply situational awareness, preparedness, and psychology to survive.Surviving Extreme Weather: The Complete Climate Change Preparedness Manual is categorized by elements—fire, water, wind, and earth—events are explained with recommendations anyone can follow to protect themselves and their family, and to minimize the risks of damage to life and property. Included are lists of items every person, home, business, and vehicle should always stock, such as: first aid kits, afflictions, and applications; emerging technologies to help protect against different weather phenomena; structural and landscape precautions and improvements; philosophies to help family, friends, and neighbors get through any environmental ordeal.

“Deep down, there is just something that draws us to the land, to wild places. We were there to listen to the land.”When National Geographic Adventurers of the Year Amy and Dave Freeman marry, they set out on an unusual honeymoon: a three-year, 12,000-mile journey across North America. From Alaska's Inside Passage to Florida's Key West, they traverse the continent by kayak, canoe, dogsled, and skis, encountering wildlife, sublime landscapes, and harrowing challenges. Along the way, the Freemans also bear witness to environmental degradation and climate change—from plastic-covered beaches to forest fires to retreating glaciers. And as they engage with Native and rural communities most impacted by the changes resulting from modern industrial society and meet individuals and organizations dedicated to protecting the natural world, their adventure deepens in ways they never imagined. From the white-knuckle rush of paddling white water to the wonderment of dogsledding across a frosted landscape where caribou and wolves roam, North American Odyssey is a celebration of our interconnectedness to the natural world and to each other. Beautifully written, engagingly told, and inspiring throughout, Amy and Dave Freeman's story is a clarion call for change in the way we live.

In this study, we assessed the direct and indirect thermal benefits of growing creepers on a building during four life stages (green, yellowish, yellowing, and wilting) based on field measurements of the temperature and humidity, and theoretical analysis. The results showed that the direct thermal benefits of creepers were significant in the green, yellowish, and yellowing stages, where they gradually decreased as the life stages progressed, with cooling gains of up to 8 °C in the green stage compared with the concrete wall, and the insulation benefits were still approximately 1 °C in the wilting stage. Creepers also had significant indirect thermal benefits in the green, yellowish, and yellowing stages, where the best cooling effect was obtained in the yellowish stage, but no significant indirect thermal benefits were found in the wilting stage. In addition, creepers could reduce the ambient air temperature by increasing the relative humidity in the surrounding environment. The results obtained in this study may provide a scientific reference to facilitate the construction of vertical greening in cold regions and to determine the specifications for related applications, as well as providing insights into vertical greening research at the same latitude. Digitalisation is a major transformative factor in tourism, yet studies show that holidaymakers are ambivalent about smartphone and Internet use. This study explores screen and digital ambivalence in nature-based tourism in and around the huts and routes of the Norwegian Trekking Association. While digital ambivalence describes ambiguous sentiments over being constantly connected, screen ambivalence covers mixed feelings regarding the presence of smartphones and screens. Methodologically, this qualitative study combined observations at 3 offline sites with an analysis of 30 field dialogues. The study found that hikers were highly aware of the positive and negative functions of digital media. Offline tourism may intensify the experience of taking a break, realising what tourists perceive to be the true nature of friluftsliv [outdoor life], heighten the sense of adventure and self-reliance. However, tensions concerning safety, missing social communication, and obstacles to posting on social media were also evident. This study contributes to the limited research on digital disconnection and offers new insights into the experiential qualities of offline holidays. Few studies have mapped tourist experiences in specific offline sites, and this study contributes to nature-based tourism research by showing how local norms mitigate tensions and nudge hikers towards positive interpretations of being digital-free. Discover the evolutionary mind and body benefits of living at the edges of your comfort zone and reconnecting with the wild—from the New York Times bestselling author of Scarcity Brain.“If you've been looking for something different to level up your health, fitness, and personal growth, this is it.”—Melissa Urban, Whole30 CEO and author of The Book of Boundaries“Michael Easter's genius is that he puts data around the edges of what we intuitively believe. His work has inspired many to change their lives for the better.”—Dr. Peter Attia, author of OutliveIn many ways, we're more comfortable than ever before. But could our sheltered, temperature-controlled, overfed, underchallenged lives actually be the leading cause of many our most urgent physical and mental health issues? In this gripping investigation, award-winning journalist Michael Easter seeks out off-the-grid visionaries, disruptive genius researchers, and mind-body conditioning trailblazers who are unlocking the life-enhancing secrets of a counterintuitive solution: discomfort. Easter's journey to understand our evolutionary need to be challenged takes him to meet the NBA's top exercise scientist, who uses an ancient Japanese practice to build championship athletes; to the mystical country of Bhutan, where an Oxford economist and Buddhist leader are showing the world what death can teach us about happiness; to the outdoor lab of a young neuroscientist who's found that nature tests our physical and mental endurance in ways that expand creativity while taming burnout and anxiety; to the remote Alaskan backcountry on a demanding thirty-three-day hunting expedition to experience the rewilding secrets of one of the last rugged places on Earth; and more. Along the way, Easter uncovers a blueprint for leveraging the power of discomfort that will dramatically improve our health and happiness, and perhaps even help us understand what it means to be human. The Comfort Crisis is a bold call to break out of your comfort zone and explore the wild within yourself.

- Abstract
We're a famously nature-loving nation, yet 86 per cent of Australians call the city home. Amid the concrete and the busyness, how can we also answer the call of the wild? Once upon a time, a burnt-out Claire Dunn spent a year living off the grid in a wilderness survival program. Yet love and the possibilities of human connection drew her back to the city, where she soon found herself as overscheduled, addicted to her phone, and lost in IKEA as the rest of us. Given all the city offers — comfort, convenience, community, and opportunity — she wants to stay. But to do so, she'll have to learn how to rewild her own urban soul. Join Claire as she sits by and swims in the brown waters of the Yarra River, forages for undomesticated food in the suburbs, and explores many other practices in a quest for connection. To make our human hearts whole, she realises, we've all got to pay attention and learn to belong to our cities — our land. This is where change begins. For ourselves and for the world.

• The quality of adolescent outdoor life is positively associated with well-being. • Examined differences between seasons, sexes and living environments. • Girls were less satisfied with their outdoor environments than boys. • Suburban areas were perceived as safer than rural and urban areas. • The Covid-19 pandemic had limited effect on adolescents' time spent outdoors. This study investigates the relationship between outdoor life and the well-being and self-esteem of Swedish adolescents aged 12–15 years old (n = 320), residing in three different living environments in the south of Sweden. The study employed a questionnaire that was administered twice during a school year that included questions on time spent outdoors, environmental quality and the perceived benefit of the outdoor environment. Additionally, the study used standardized scales to measure life satisfaction, self-esteem and mental health. The results of the study revealed that adolescents who had more positive perceptions of their outdoor environment and being outdoors reported higher life satisfaction and self-esteem, as well as better mental health. Notably, girls' generally perceived their outdoor environments as lower quality compared to boys across different seasons. Furthermore, variations between living environments and seasons were also observed. Overall, the study underscores the importance of promoting outdoor life and highlights specific areas planners should address to create outdoor environments with possible benefits for the well-being of adolescents of different ages, sexes and living in different communities. - Abstract
Bobcats Before Breakfast is the firsthand account of a twentieth century naturalist, guide, hunter, trapper, woodsman who spent more than forty years living with and off the land. With grit and zeal this self-taught naturalist gathered knowledge about how animals live and shared his findings leading hikes and survival classes at the Harris Center for Conservation Education in Hancock, NH. Kulish's daily routine was to rise before dawn, get out into the woods, and track, observe, and record his findings on deer, otters, beaver, wildcats—all before breakfast. “I'm still not sure whether I learned to understand people because they are so much like wild animals, or wild animals because they are so much like people,” wrote Kulish.
