Timing is a key data for understanding the origin of faulting. The Balcones fault system (BFS) extends ~600 km along the northern margin of the Gulf of Mexico oil basin and controls springs that supply the major cities in Texas, but its origin is unclear. We provide its first direct timing by applying U–Pb geochronology on seven calcite‐mineralized fault surfaces. We have found that this extensional fault system formed during the Palaeocene‐middle Eocene time (from 61.3 ± 2.7 to 45.4 ± 2.1 Ma), which is much earlier than previous estimates. We show that the formation of the BFS coincides with the largest clastic influx in the northern Gulf of Mexico basin that resulted from Laramide uplift and erosion. This timing and the location of the BFS along the Ouachita suture, support our interpretation of this fault system formed as the result of lithospheric flexure related to Paleogene sedimentary loading. The Troiseck-Floning and Rosskogel nappes are part of the Austroalpine Unit in the eastern part of the Eastern Alps. The nappes are in tectonic contact and comprise Permian to Mesozoic lower greenschist facies metamorphic metasediments, but only the Troiseck-Floning Nappe consists of a pre-Permian crystalline basement (Troiseck Complex) as well. LA-ICP-MS U–Pb zircon ages, Rb–Sr biotite ages and geochemical data unravel the geological evolution of these tectonic units from Neoproterozoic to Mesozoic times. Detrital U–Pb zircon analyses from siliciclastic metasediments of the Troiseck Complex indicate a late Ediacaran to early Cambrian deposition age of the volcanoclastic sequence. The age distribution correlates with a position along the northeastern Gondwana margin. A late Cambrian crystallization age (502.4 ± 6.8 Ma) of granitic intrusions together with evidence for Late Cambrian/Ordovician magmatism and metamorphism indicate a position at an active plate margin. Polyphase overprinting during the Variscan orogeny is recorded by Late Devonian/early Carboniferous pegmatite dikes (~ 353 Ma) that formed after an early Variscan event, while Pennsylvanian ages of overgrowth rims and inherited grains (~ 320 Ma) are evidence for late Variscan metamorphism. Rhyolitic to andesitic volcanic rocks from the Troiseck-Floning and Rosskogel nappes (271–264 Ma) concomitant with intrusions of porphyric granitoids now transformed to augen gneiss (271 Ma) yield evidence for Permian rift-related magmatism that is widely reported from the Eastern Alps and Western Carpathians. Rb–Sr biotite ages (75–74 Ma) indicate Late Cretaceous cooling below c. 300 °C. This relates to Late Cretaceous exhumation of the Troiseck-Floning Nappe following an Eo-Alpine metamorphic overprint at lower greenschist-facies metamorphic conditions. Based on the similar lithostratigraphy, analogous geological evolution and structure, the Troiseck-Floning Nappe represents the lateral extension of the Seckau Nappe. [Display omitted] The Altai orogen is a typical intracontinental orogen in Central Asia that experienced far-field deformation associated with Indian-Eurasian plate convergence. This region is characterized by uplift comparable to that of the Tianshan Mountains but has a distinct strain rate. Half of the Indo-Asia strain is accommodated by the Tianshan Mountains, whereas the Altai Mountains accommodates only 10%. To elucidate how the Altai Mountains produced such a large amount of uplift with only one-fifth of the strain rate of the Tianshan Mountains, we constructed a detailed crustal image of the Altai Mountains based on a new 166.8-km deep seismic reflection profile. The prestack migration images reveal an antiform within the Erqis crust, an ∼10 km Moho offset between the Altai arc and the East Junggar area, and a major south-dipping (30° dip) thrust in the lower crust beneath the Altai Mountains, which is connected to the Moho offset. The south-dipping thrust not only records the southward subduction of the Ob-Zaisan Ocean in the Paleozoic but also controlled the Altai deformation pattern in the Cenozoic with the Erqis antiform. The Erqis antiform prevented the extension of deformation to the Junggar crust. The south-dipping thrust in the lower crust of the Altai area caused extrusion of the lower crust, generating uplift at the surface, thickening of the crust, and steep (∼10 km) Moho deepening in the Altai Mountains. This process significantly widened the deformation zone of the Altai Mountains. Comprehensive U-Pb detrital zircon geochronology of Ediacaran sandstones from Oman indicates that they originated from Neoproterozoic basement with a peak magmatic age of ca. 850-780 Ma (Tonian), with lesser Paleoproterozoic and Ediacaran sources and renewed magmatic input starting at ca. 550 Ma. Comparison with detrital zircons from the Arabian-Nubian and NW Indian Shields supports an eastern Gondwana affinity for the Ediacaran succession of Oman. Tonian basement sediment sources are present in Oman. Sources for older Paleoproterozoic zircons (ca. 2500 and 1800 Ma) are not found in Oman but are known from the cratonic Indian Shield. The signal of the main magmatic events of the juvenile Arabian-Nubian Shield, peaking at ca. 640-620 Ma, is rare or absent in the Ediacaran rock succession of Oman. However, deformed Ediacaran clastic units with an Arabian-Nubian Shield affinity occur in western Oman. Influx of latest Ediacaran-early Cambrian zircons (550-525 Ma) is interpreted as due to final Cambrian Angudan/Malagasy orogeny-related magmatism. These results, together with new ages for volcano-sedimentary terranes in the subsurface of SW Oman and seismic observations, support the interpretation that the Ediacaran succession of Oman was deposited along the western, passive margin of the Greater Indian Shield, on the eastern (east and west in this paper refer to present-day coordinates) side of the Mozambique Ocean. Oman then collided with the Arabian-Nubian Shield in the early Cambrian, when the Angudan/Malagasy orogeny led to final consolidation of Gondwana. Our data support the inference that the youngest and final suture between the Indian and Arabian Shields lies in the subsurface of Oman along the early Cambrian western deformation front. Although many collisional orogens form after subduction of oceanic lithosphere between two continents, some orogens result from strain localization within a continent via inversion of structures inherited from continental rifting. Intracontinental rift-inversion orogens exhibit a range of structural styles, but the underlying causes of such variability have not been extensively explored. We use numerical models of intracontinental rift inversion to investigate the impact of parameters including rift structure, rift duration, post-rift cooling, and convergence velocity on orogen structure. Our models reproduce the natural variability of rift-inversion orogens and can be categorized using three endmember styles: asymmetric underthrusting (AU), distributed thickening (DT), and localized polarity flip (PF). Inversion of narrow rifts tends to produce orogens with more localized deformation (styles AU and PF) than those resulting from wide rifts. However, multiple combinations of the parameters we investigated can produce the same structural style. Thus, our models indicate no unique relationship between orogenic structure and the conditions prior to and during inversion. Because the style of rift-inversion orogenesis is highly contingent upon the rift history prior to inversion, knowing the geologic history that preceded rift inversion is essential for translating orogenic structure into the processes that produced that structure. Archean to Palaeoproterozoic basement rocks exposed in the Dunhuang block in NW China were affected by Palaeozoic crustal reworking, as constrained by previous zircon U–Pb geochronological investigations. However, relationships between the Palaeozoic metamorphic ages, P–T evolution and deformational history of the region remain ambiguous. In order to address this issue, P–T–t–D paths of paragneisses from the basement of the Hongliuxia belt in the southern Dunhuang block were investigated. Inclusions in garnet and kyanite from the paragneisses are considered as vestiges of Palaeozoic M1 metamorphism corresponding to initiation of the prograde evolution. The earliest continuous metamorphic fabric is an originally steep N–S striking foliation S2. This fabric was reworked by vertical folds F3 associated with the development of a ubiquitous steep, mainly south‐dipping, E‐W striking axial planar foliation S3. The S2 foliation in paragneisses is mainly associated with Grt–St–Ky–Sil–Bt–Ms–Pl–Qz–Rt assemblages in samples from the western domain and with Grt–Ky–Sil–Bt–Kfs–Pl–Qz–Rt assemblages in samples from the northeastern domain of the Hongliuxia belt. The S3 foliation is associated with Grt–Sil–St–Bt–Ms–Pl–Qz–Ilm assemblages in the western domain and with Grt–Sil–Bt–Ms–Pl–Qz–Kfs–Ilm assemblages in the northeastern domain, followed by growth of chlorite in both domains. Early prograde stage (M1) from 4.0–6.5 kbar and 540–560°C to metamorphic peak (M2a) at 9–10 kbar and ~650–675°C is mainly recorded by paragneisses from the western domain. Subsequent decompression is initially accompanied by heating (M2b) constrained to 6.5–7 kbar and 675–710°C in the western domain, and to 6–6.5 kbar and ~730°C in the northeastern domain, followed by cooling (M3) through 4–6.5 kbar and 550–650°C till late chloritization (late M3). In situ U–Pb dating of monazite combined with monazite trace‐element compositions suggests that prograde evolution (M1) most likely started at c. 406 Ma, peak‐P conditions (M2a) were reached at 400–394 Ma, decompression associated with heating (M2b) took place at 393–391 Ma, and cooling (M3) during exhumation probably lasted from 380 to 354 Ma. The prograde metamorphism probably reflects burial during underthrusting of neighbouring continental basement (the Alxa block or an equivalent) below the Dunhuang block. This event culminated in pure shear thickening (D2a) of the whole supra‐subduction margin followed by minor heating and exhumation (D2b). The D3‐M3 event is interpreted as reflecting exhumation during orthogonal shortening of the system, possibly in response to an independent orogenic cycle. Combined with the available regional data, this study reveals the existence of a complex tectono‐metamorphic evolution for the Dunhuang block characterized by two distinct orogenic phases with (i) the thickening of a previously thinned arc‐back‐arc crust recorded in the northern and central belts at 420–410 Ma in the pro‐wedge side of the active margin (Sanweishan phase), followed by (ii) the 410–390 Ma thickening in the retro‐wedge side (Hongliuxia phase). Such a tectonic evolution of the whole Dunhuang block resembles Andean‐type migration of crustal thickening from the convergent front to hinterlands. The D3‐M3 event, potentially responsible for the juxtaposition of rocks from different geological occurrences and depths, is seemingly independent from this Andean‐type orogenic cycle. The majority of Neoproterozoic rocks exposed in southern Libya, are comprised of intrusive coarse-grained porphyritic, two-mica, and high K-calc alkaline granite. The Jabal Fezzan Granite (JFG) is located in southwestern Libya. In this study, trace elements and whole-rock geochemistry have been used to understand the origin and the process of petrogenesis of the studied granites. The JFG is high-Si, Rb, Y, Nb, and (ASI values greater than 1.1). Mineralogically, it is characterized by the presence of minor muscovite and biotite and a lack of hornblende, exhibiting features of S-type granites, and having a character that belongs to an alkali-calcic series. According to geochemical value, light REE-enriched, characterized by moderate enrichments in LREE (La/Sm), HREE, and weak negative Eu-anomalies. The geochemical modeling of the (JFG) reveals that the JFG derived from the melting of the crust and underwent high fractional crystallization (~50%) of plagioclase and K-feldspar at (H-P) conditions (750–980°C/1–4 GPa). The Jabal Fezzan (JFG) formed during Pan-African orogenic events during the destabilization of the interior Saharan metacraton due to compression stress and transpressive movements along pre-existing weakness and reactivation of shear zones inherited from Paleoproterozoic evolution. The Neoproterozoic basement forms the northernmost margin of the intracratonic Muruzq Basin, as evidenced by (greenschist facies) and intruded granitic rocks derived at the syn-collision stage (630–540 Ma). Underpinning almost every Paleozoic paleogeographic reconstruction and tectonic model of the Lachlan Orogen is the interpretation of the structural geology related to crustal collision and amalgamation. Bounding the eastern margin of the Lachlan Orogen is a north-trending corridor of Cambrian–Ordovician turbidites that in northeast Victoria are recognised as the Pinnak Sandstone or previously known as the Mallacoota Beds. This sequence contains an accretionary prism related early S* foliation, syn-sedimentary dykes, slump structures, early faults or décollements and early quartz veins. These indicate anisotropic compaction by fluid extraction in a shallow marine turbidite sequence that underwent localised deformation (D1), which can be attributed to the Benambran Orogeny (ca 450 Ma). There was a change in the rheological properties during the ensuing late Silurian D2 Bindian Orogeny (ca 420 Ma). This event produced north–south-trending upright, east-verging folds (F2) with a marked partitioning of strain between the different sedimentary units. Folds plunge south at ∼30°, are tight to isoclinal, with local collapsed hinges and limb thrusts. This D2 deformation along the paleo-Pacific margin involved dextral transpression and a southerly propagation of the deformation front. Superimposed on these structures is an east–west paleostress pattern and two episodes of faulting (D3 and D4). In the first, brittle strike-slip faults were accompanied by ductile folding related to east–west shortening during the Middle–Late Devonian Tabberabberan Orogeny (ca 385–370 Ma). These were accompanied by the emplacement of the Sandpatch Point Granite. The second episode (D4) of strike-slip faulting reactivated many of the earlier faults during further east–west shortening and was related to the Carboniferous Kanimblan Orogeny (ca 354–343 Ma). This is best seen close to the granite contact where the strong crystallised granite reinforced the contact metamorphosed greywacke sequence, inhibiting ductile deformation so that faults deformed in a brittle fashion. Eastern Australia was at a convergent plate boundary where a Middle–Late Ordovician turbiditic sequence was accreted to an accretionary prism. The Pinnak Sandstone contains a weak phyllosilicate alignment (S*), D1 faults and folds from localised deformation in the accretionary prism. The Silurian Bindian Orogeny produced upright east-verging, south-plunging F2 folds. Brittle faults overprint the Bindian tectonic features and are accompanied by minor folding, marking the transition into Middle Devonian and Carboniferous deformation and intrusive events. The kinematics and geometries associated with these deformation events reflect the changing tectonic regime along the paleo-Pacific margin of eastern Australia during east–west compression. The Eastern Kunlun Orogenic Belt (EKOB), located north of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, recorded voluminous late Palaeozoic – early Mesozoic intermediate-acid volcanic rocks. The tectonic evolution of the Palaeo-Tethys Ocean from initial subduction and final closure and post-collision extension has been hotly debated. This study examines the petrogenesis of Palaeozoic to Early Mesozoic volcanic rocks at six locations: Xiahe, Elashankou, Jirimai, Harizha, Nagengkangqieer, and Yazigounan. The investigation involves detailed field observations, petrology, zircon U-Pb geochronology, Lu-Hf isotopes, and whole-rock geochemical analysis. The rocks analysed represent three episodic volcanic events. The ca. 257–245 Ma volcanic rocks were derived from magma mixing response to the subduction. The ca. 227–220 Ma highly fractionated I-type volcanics were derived from partial melting of the ancient lower crust, with varying contribution proportions of mantle materials. The ca. 216 Ma A-type volcanic rocks derived from partial melting of the juvenile crust. In this study, using existing regional geological data and spatiotemporal distribution of the magmatic region, combined with our new data, we attempt to propose more rational models to reveal the tectonic evolution of the Palaeo-Tethys Ocean, and we recognize three significant time nodes: (1) Ca. 240 Ma marks the final closure time of the Palaeo-Tethys Ocean. (2) Ca. 230 Ma indicates the vital tectonic regime transition from compression to extension response to slab break-off and continued lithospheric delamination. (3) Ca. 216 Ma mark the beginning of the final stage of orogeny in the EKOB, and mild magmatism lasts to ca. 200 Ma in response to the mountain collapse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new tectonic model is presented to explain the tectono-stratigraphic evolution of the Paleoproterozoic Karrat Group in central West Greenland and the polyphase deformation, magmatism, and metamorphism of the Rinkian orogen. Sedimentation of the Karrat Group initiated after ca. 2000 Ma in an intracratonic rift basin with basal quartzites overlying Archean gneisses of the Rae craton. Rift-related alkaline volcanic rocks and synrift siliciclastic sediments were deposited in the north while an evaporite-carbonate platform developed in the south. The rift basin evolved to a back-arc basin, with associated subalkaline volcanic rocks, concomitant with the intrusion of arc-related granitoids of the Prøven igneous complex along the basal contact of the Karrat Group between 1900 Ma and 1850 Ma. The Karrat Group and magmatic arc rocks underwent metamorphism ca. 1830-1800 Ma during the collisional phase of the Rinkian orogeny. The metamorphic grade of the Karrat Group increases from greenschist facies in the south to granulite facies in the north, where it is marked by migmatization and emplacement of S-type leucogranites. Extensive east-southeastward thrust emplacement and fold vergence characterize the Rinkian orogen south of the Prøven igneous complex magmatic arc, where the arc-continent collision is established along a top-to-the-ESE shear zone postdating the Rinkian metamorphism. In summary, the Karrat Basin developed on the upper plate above eastward-dipping subduction and, together with the Rinkian orogen, represents the result of arc-continent collision that initiated the structuring of a backarc fold-and-thrust system antithetic to the subduction system. Sardinia (Italy) represents one of the most comprehensive cross-sections of the Variscan orogen. The metamorphic and structural complexity characterizing its axial zone still presents many unresolved issues in the current state of knowledge. The data presented from the structural study of the entire axial zone of this area have allowed the authors to propose a subdivision into two new structural complexes. In particular, a younger complex is identified as the New Gneiss Complex, containing remnants of an older and higher-grade metamorphic complex defined as the Old Gneiss Complex. The structural and geometric relationships between the two complexes suggest the redefinition of the axial zone of Sardinia as part of the intracontinental East Variscan Shear Zone/medium-temperature Regional Mylonitic Complex. Comparable relationships are also highlighted in many other areas of the Variscan chain (e.g., Morocco, Corsica, Maures Massif, and Argentera Massif). Extending this new structural interpretation to other axial zones of the South European Variscan orogen could provide new hints for reconstructing the collision boundaries between Gondwana and Laurussia in the late Carboniferous to the early Permian periods. The Sulu orogenic belt, formed by the collision between Sino‐Korean and South China blocks, has important geological implications due to its unique tectonic setting. To understand the deep crustal structure of the extension of the Sulu orogenic belt in the Yellow Sea, we presented a 220‐km long active‐source ocean‐bottom seismometer wide‐angle reflection/refraction profile across the Yellow Sea. The obtained P‐wave velocity structure exhibits significant horizontal and vertical variations. The middle and upper crustal regions of the north beneath the survey line exhibit a higher velocity and larger thickness than those of the south, whereas the opposite is the case with the lower crust. The lower crustal high‐velocity zone in the Northern Depression of the South Yellow Sea Basin is a manifestation of the mantle material upwelling and accretion to the lower crust. Magmatic intrusions occurred along the faults and formed a high‐velocity zone in the middle and upper crusts. Due to undulating Moho interface and varying crustal velocities, the Qingdao–Rongcheng fault is identified as a fault in the Sulu orogenic belt without the significance of tectonic zoning. This study shows that the Sino‐Korean Block, Sulu orogenic belt and South China Block are bounded by the Jimo–Muping faults (an extension to the sea), Qianliyan fault and deep fault of the South Yellow Sea. Furthermore, the Sulu orogenic belt may have been formed by the northward subduction of the South China Block beneath the Sino‐Korean Block during the Indosinian orogeny to the east of the Shandong Peninsula. The Early Permian in the present-day Europe area was a time when a major tectonic shift occurred, leading from the tectonic collapse of the Variscan orogeny to the crustal extension and thinning that characterized the Early Permian times. Crustal extension was associated with extensive magmatism at different crustal levels: from gabbro in the lower crust or at the mantle/crust transition to subaerial high-SiO2 volcanic activity. In the whole Southalpine Domain, the Early Permian intrusive bodies occur from the west (e.g. Ivrea-Verbano Complex and "Graniti dei Laghi") to the east (Ifinger, Brixen and Cima d'Asta intrusive complexes). Among these, in the central Southern Alps (comprised between the Giudicarie Belt and the Lake Como), minor intrusive complexes also occur. The Val Biandino Intrusive Suite consists of two magmatic units: the Val Biandino Quartz-Diorite (VBQD) and the Valle di San Biagio Granite (VSBG). The first of them consists of gabbro-diorite to granodiorite bodies associated with leucocratic cordierite-bearing granitic dikes that intruded the pre-Permian basement. To the west, a W-dipping normal fault of Permian age represents the boundary between this unit and the Valle di San Biagio porphyric granite. All rock varieties of the Val Biandino Intrusive Suite display a high-K calc-alkaline affinity with metaluminous to peraluminous character. Field crosscutting relationships point to a late generation of the cordierite granites of the Val Biandino Quartz-Diorite unit with respect to the more mafic types. SHRIMP U–Pb zircon dating provided an age of 285.2 ± 1.9 Ma for a cordierite granite of the Val Biandino Quartz-Diorite unit and 283.2 ± 1.9 Ma for the porphyric Valle di San Biagio Granite. Geochemical data suggest that gabbro-diorite, quartz-diorite, granodiorite and leucogranite are not co-magmatic. The existing gaps in term of SiO2 wt% and the higher HREE contents in mafic and intermediate rocks with respect to granite coupled with similar LREE in all rocks support this hypothesis. The high Rb/Sr ratios (> 1) in leucogranite, together with the occurrence of white mica and cordierite point to a significant contribution of crustal partial melting in their genesis. The Val Biandino Intrusive Suite was likely formed through the interaction of magma genesis at the mantle/crust transition and partial melting of the heterogeneous pre-Permian basement of the Southalpine Domain. This scenario explains the strong heterogeneity displayed by the relatively small intrusive complex and the strong crustal signature exhibited by all the magmatic types of the Val Biandino Intrusive Suite. The Getang is a representative Carlin-type gold deposit in Southwest China. It has a proven reserve of about 30 tonnes at an average grade of 5.1 g/t Au. The orebodies occur as strat-abound lenses, and are structurally controlled by shallow NWW- and NE-trending fold-fault systems and the unconformity between the Upper and Middle Permian. In this study, the regional- and deposit-scale structural investigations, joints and finite strain measurements, and stress and dynamic analysis were conducted with an aim to reveal the structural process of the Getang gold deposit and clarify the relationship between the gold mineralization and structures. Three phases of deformation were identified in the deposit: (1) paleokarst was generated by a crustal uplift when the Youjiang Basin experienced extension at the end of the Middle Permian, laying the foundation for the unconformity; (2) the NW-trending structures were formed under a NNE-SSW compression during the Indochina-South China collision (Indosinian orogeny) in Triassic; (3) the NE-trending structures were generated or reactivated under a NW-SE-oriented compression during the Yanshanian intracontinental orogeny. The unconformity recorded two episodes of tectonic evolution in the NNE-SSW and NW-SE directions. Structural analyses and geochronology data suggest that the Getang gold deposit was formed as a result of tectonic transition from compression to extension during the Yanshanian intracontinental orogeny. Decades of empirical research have revealed how the geological history of our planet shaped plant evolution by establishing well‐known patterns (e.g., how mountain uplift resulted in high rates of diversification and replicate radiations in montane plant taxa). This follows a traditional approach where botanical data are interpreted in light of geological events. In this synthesis, I instead describe how by integrating natural history, phylogenetics, and population genetics, botanical research can be applied alongside geology and paleontology to inform our understanding of past geological and climatic processes. This conceptual shift aligns with the goals of the emerging field of geogenomics. In the neotropics, plant geogenomics is a powerful tool for the reciprocal exploration of two long standing questions in biology and geology: how the dynamic landscape of the region came to be and how it shaped the evolution of the richest flora. Current challenges that are specific to analytical approaches for plant geogenomics are discussed. I describe the scale at which various geological questions can be addressed from biological data and what makes some groups of plants excellent model systems for geogenomics research. Although plant geogenomics is discussed with reference to the neotropics, the recommendations given here for approaches to plant geogenomics can and should be expanded to exploring long‐standing questions on how the earth evolved with the use of plant DNA. Post‐collisional magmatism contains important clues for understanding the reworking and growth of continental crust, as well as lithospheric delamination and orogenic collapse. Early Devonian magmatism has been identified in the North Qilian Orogenic Belt (NQOB). This paper reports an integrated study of petrology, whole‐rock geochemistry, Sm‐Nd isotope and zircon U‐Pb dating, as well as Lu‐Hf isotopic data, for two Early Devonian intrusive plutons. The Yongchang and Chijin granites yield zircon U‐Pb ages of 394–407 Ma and 414 Ma, respectively. Both of them are characterized by weakly peraluminous to metaluminous without typical aluminium‐rich minerals, LREE‐enriched patterns with negative Eu anomalies and a negative correlation between P2O5 and SiO2 contents, consistent with geochemical features of I‐type granitoids. Zircons from the studied granites display negative to weak positive εHf(t) values (–5.7 to 2.1), which agree well with those of negative εNd(t) values (−6.4 to −2.9) for the whole‐rock samples, indicating that they were derived from the partial melting of Mesoproterozoic crust. Furthermore, low Sr/Y ratios (1.13–21.28) and high zircon saturation temperatures (745°C to 839°C, with the majority being >800°C) demonstrated a relatively shallow depth level below the garnet stability field and an additional heat source. Taken together, the Early Devonian granitic magmatism could have been produced by the partial melting of ancient crustal materials heated by mantle‐derived magmas at high‐temperature and low‐pressure conditions during post‐collisional extensional collapse. The data obtained in this study, when viewed in conjunction with previous studies, provides more information about the tectonic processes that followed the closure of the North Qilian Ocean. The tectonic transition from continental collision to post‐collisional delamination could be constrained to ∼430 Ma, which is provided by the sudden decrease of Sr/Y and La/Yb ratios and an increase in zircon εHf(t) values for granitoids. A two‐stage tectonic evolution model from continental collision to post‐collisional extensional collapse for the NQOB includes (a) continental collision and crustal thickening during ca. 455–430 Ma, characterized by granulite‐facies metamorphism and widespread low‐Mg adakitic magmatism; (b) post‐collisional delamination of thickened continental crust and extensional collapse of orogen during ca. 430–390 Ma, provided by coeval high‐Mg adakitic magmatism, A‐type granites and I‐type granitoids with low Sr‐Y ratios. The Western Gneiss Region (WGR) is a Precambrian basement domain in the Scandinavian Caledonides and one of the world's largest high‐ and ultrahigh‐pressure terranes. The south–central WGR underwent regional eclogite facies metamorphism 415–400 Ma ago when Baltica subducted beneath Laurentia, during the Scandian orogeny. Eclogites in the WGR group into two traditional types: (1) Precambrian mafic intrusions metamorphosed in situ during Scandian continental subduction and (2) eclogites, garnet peridotites and garnet pyroxenites within ultramafic complexes derived from the subcontinental mantle beneath Laurentia. We document, using field relations, petrography, whole‐rock geochemistry and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) zircon geochronology, a hitherto unrecognized third type of eclogite in the WGR that places new constraints on its tectonic architecture: an eclogitized fragment of oceanic crust from the Iapetus Ocean. The Kråkfjord eclogite complex is a km2‐sized body with an interior consisting of kyanite eclogite (meta‐troctolite) and subordinate layers and lenses of garnet peridotite, garnet websterite and kyanite–garnet leucotonalite. This interior is capped by Fe–Ti‐rich eclogite, which locally contains subordinate pockets of migmatitic aluminous gneiss. The elemental abundances and isotopic compositions of the Fe–Ti‐rich eclogites resemble those of mid‐ocean ridge basalt (MORB). In contrast, the interior kyanite eclogites, peridotites and pyroxenites have compositions similar to the gabbroic cumulates in the lower oceanic crust of slow‐spreading ridges. U–Pb SIMS dating of igneous zircon cores from a leucotonalite pod in the interior of the Kråkfjord complex yields Cambro‐Ordovician igneous ages of 500–440 Ma, with the ~500 Ma age interpreted as the isotopically undisturbed age. This age matches those of Iapetan oceanic rocks exposed elsewhere in the mountain belt. Metamorphic zircon from an Fe–Ti‐rich eclogite in the carapace of the Kråkfjord complex dates the eclogite facies metamorphism at 421.9 ± 2.2 Ma, synchronous with the continental collision. Zircon from a leucosome in Fe–Ti‐rich retro‐eclogite indicates an age of 408.5 ± 2 Ma for the crystallization of partial melt following the decompression. Detrital zircon core ages from a pocket of aluminous migmatitic gneiss in the carapace indicate derivation of sediment from the Baltic crust. Collectively, the data show that the eclogite complex (1) originated at an Iapetus spreading centre near the continent Baltica, (2) subducted to eclogite conditions during Scandian continental collision and (3) was tectonically intercalated with the Precambrian Baltica basement of the WGR. Multiple studies have applied zoned garnet geochronology to place temporal constraints on the rates of metamorphism and deformation during orogenesis. We report new high-resolution isotope dilution-thermal ionization mass spectrometry Sm-Nd isochron ages on concentric growth zones from microstructurally and thermodynamically characterized garnets from the Betic Cordillera, southern Spain. Our ages for the garnet core (13.64 ± 0.31 Ma), mantle (13.41 ± 0.37 Ma), and rim (13.34 ± 0.45 Ma) indicate rapid garnet growth and are consistent with published garnet ages interpreted to reflect high-pressure metamorphism in the region. Thermodynamic analysis indicates garnets grew during subduction at ~1.5-2.0 GPa and 570-600 ℃. The core to rim duration of spiral garnet growth was just a few hundred thousand years. While other zoned garnet studies have shown similar rapid growth in subduction zone settings, this is the first documentation of such rapid growth of a spiral garnet. Combining this garnet growth duration with the magnitude of spiral inclusion trail curvature, we compute a strain rate of ~10-13 s-1, an order of magnitude faster than all previous spiral garnet studies. In the northern part of the Marrakech High Atlas (MHA), along the southern Variscan segment of the Western Meseta, a Variscan granitic intrusion crops out, intruding metasediments and meta-volcanosedimentary rocks of Early Cambrian to Ordovician age. A new whole-rock Rb-Sr isochron age of 268 ± 9 Ma for the granite, combined with a previously published whole-rock Rb-Sr radiometric dating (271 ± 3 Ma), reveals a post-kinematic (tectonic) character with regard to the main Variscan deformational event, belonging within the tectonic context of the Moroccan Variscan orogenic belt. Geochemically, the Azegour intrusion is metaluminous to peraluminous and exhibits a calc-alkaline affinity with a ferruginous composition. The massif shows an extremely differentiated character (SiO2 = 77.53–78.14 per cent), K2O and high total alkali contents, FeOt/(FeOt + MgO) and Ga/Al ratios, which have typical characteristics of an A-type granite. In addition, the granite contains high concentrations of LREE (LaN/SmN= 7.9–13.67) relative to HREE (LaN/YbN= 4.81–11.61) and a well-defined Eu negative anomaly (Eu/Eu* = 0.44–0.75). The granitic samples exhibit a strong enrichment of the most incompatible elements (RbN/YbN = 69.84–159.98) and a strong depletion of Ba, Sr, Eu, Nb, P and Ti. These characteristics are similar to those of A1-type granites. The absence of mineralogy typical of an S-type granite, combined with its weakly peraluminous character [A/CNK (molar Al2O3/CaO+Na2O+K2O) = 1,013–1,045], suggest that there is little or no significant involvement of supracrustal sources in the petrogenesis of the intrusion studied. Despite the strongly differentiated character of Azegour granitic rocks samples, their multi-element patterns shows many similarities to those of I-type granitoids, which has led to postulate that the parental liquids of A1-type were derived from partial melting of mafic magmas. The representative samples studied show less depleted εNd(t = 270 Ma) values of −0.94 to −4.85 and lower positive to slightly negative εSr(t = 270 Ma) values of −1.45 to 9.32. The isotopic data suggest that the Azegour granite was emplaced 270 myr ago, apparently generated by partial melting of a mafic/intermediate magma source in the lower crust as a result of the underplating of the asthenosphere mantle-derived Oceanic Island Basalt-like magmas. Alternatively, their isotopic signatures also can be attributed to the interaction and/or hybridisation of basaltic liquids derived from the mantle with these lower crust materials. The generated parental magma probably occurred at deep structural levels and involved fractional crystallisation processes by the separation of a mineralogical association composed of plagioclase + potassium feldspar ± biotite ± amphibole ± sphene ± apatite. The whole-rock Rb-Sr age of 268 ± 9 Ma, whole-rock geochemistry and Sr-Nd isotopic compositions of εNd(t = 270 Ma) and εSr(t = 270 Ma), combined with fieldwork data, suggest that the Azegour granite was emplaced during the later stage of compressional Variscan events in the MHA. The Arabia – Eurasia collision zone in the central part of the Alpine – Himalayan orogenic system has had a complex deformation history since the Palaeozoic. In Iran, the collision zone consists of the Alborz‐Talesh, Kopeh Dagh and Zagros foldbelts and the intervening Central Iran area. In this review paper, we summarize the structural architecture and tectonostratigraphic characteristics of these domains and attempt to correlate regional deformation events between them. The results show that six regional‐scale deformation phases can be recognized and correlated in Iran over a time interval extending from the Late Palaeozoic to the Late Cenozoic. Late Palaeozoic rifting in northern Gondwana and subsequent oceanic spreading resulted in the separation of the Central and North Iran blocks from the Arabian Platform. These blocks later converged and collided with the southern margin of Eurasia due to the subduction of the intervening PalaeoTethys lithosphere ("Cimmerian orogeny": Late Triassic). The convergent setting resulted in the initial development of the Alborz‐Talesh foldbelt in present‐day northern Iran, while extensional basins developed in the forebulge area in Central Iran. Continuing northward subduction of NeoTethyan oceanic lithosphere at the southern Eurasia margin produced Early Cretaceous back‐arc extension and associated volcanism in Central Iran and the Alborz‐Talesh area to the north. A phase of compressional deformation in the Late Cretaceous was related to the collision of a series of microcontinents derived from Northern Gondwana, including the Ercinjan and Bitlis massifs, with the Central Iran block, and is recorded in the Alborz‐Talesh foldbelt and in Central Iran. Further back‐arc extension in the late Paleocene – Eocene was accompanied by pervasive volcanism and volcaniclastic sedimentation throughout northern and Central Iran. The final closure of NeoTethys and convergence between the Arabian and Eurasian Plates evolved through phases of early Oligocene "soft" collision and middle Miocene "hard" collision. This was accompanied by thrusting in the internal parts of the Zagros foldbelt and by folding and subordinate thrusting in the more external parts, with related development of the flexural Mesopotamian Basin in the foreland to the SW. This paper aims to update our understanding of the carbon cycle in the Himalayas, the most intense collisional orogeny globally, by providing new insight into its impact on Cenozoic climate cooling through the use of isotopic variations in both organic and inorganic carbon and an isotopic mass balance model. Our results from 20 selected hot springs show that the relative contributions of dissolved carbon from the mantle, metamorphic decarbonization, aqueous dissolution, and soil organic matter are approximately 2%, 82%, 6%, and 10%, respectively. Approximately 87% ± 5% of CO2 generated in the deep crust precipitates as calcite, while approximately 5.5% ± 1% of this carbon is converted to biomass through microbial chemosynthesis at depths less than 2 km. Our random forests approach yielded a metamorphic carbon flux from the entire Himalayan orogenic belt of approximately 2.7 ∼ 4.5 × 1012 mol/yr. The minor CO2 released into the atmosphere (2.5 ∼ 4.2 × 1011 mol/yr) is comparable to the carbon consumption driven by Himalayan weathering. This paper provides new insights into deep carbon cycling, notably that approximately 93% of deeply sourced carbon is trapped in the shallow crust, rendering orogenic processes carbon neutral and possibly acting as one of the major triggers of long‐term climate cooling in the Cenozoic. This paper reports the chemistry of aqueous solutions, carbon isotopic compositions of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and helium and carbon isotopic compositions of free gases from hot springs in southern Tibet. The carbon isotope fractionation model between gas and aqueous solutions revealed that the carbon released from depth underwent six different stages. Based on the random forests machine learning algorithm, we estimated the metamorphic carbon flux across the Himalayan orogenic belt. Furthermore, only a small fraction (7%) of deep carbon is eventually released into the atmosphere, and this volume is the same magnitude as the amount of carbon absorbed by silicate weathering on the Tibetan Plateau. This paper emphasizes that the carbon sequestration process in the upper crust may have resulted in nearly carbon‐neutral geological bodies in the Himalayan orogenic belt, thus playing a critical role in Cenozoic climate cooling. Arc-arc amalgamation occurs during the evolution of composite orogens at convergent plate margins and plays a critical role in controlling accretionary patterns and processes. The eastern Junggar terrane in the southern Central Asian Orogenic Belt underwent a long-lived subduction-accretion process in the Paleozoic, but whether and how the Yemaquan and Dananhu-Harlik arcs were amalgamated remain debatable. A systematic U-Pb-Hf-O isotopic study was conducted on zircons from Silurian granitic rocks in the Yemaquan arc. The U-Pb dating results suggest that these rocks were emplaced at 433-422 Ma and inherited abundant 536-435 Ma zircons representing a predominant magmatic episode in the Yemaquan arc. Their positive εHf(t) values and young Hf model ages indicate that the Yemaquan arc is dominated by juvenile basement with significant crustal growth during the Neoproterozoic to early Paleozoic. The variations in zircon Eu/Eu*, εHf(t), and δ18O values reveal that the Yemaquan arc experienced remarkable crustal thickening and remobilization at ca. 450 Ma, similar to the northern Dananhu-Harlik arc, and this was followed by extension that initiated at ca. 420 Ma. These features support the amalgamation of these two arcs occurring ca. 450-420 Ma. Integrated with regional data, we correlated this amalgamation event in the eastern Junggar terrane with the orogenic event in the Chinese Altai terrane, and we propose a middle Paleozoic tectonic evolution model in the eastern Junggar-Altai area from arc assembly to dispersal in association with a transition in accretionary mode. Carbonate archives record a brief snapshot of the ambient Earth's surface conditions at their deposition. However, the geologically reasonable extraction and interpretation of geochemical proxy data from ancient, diagenetically altered rock archives is fraught with problems. Three issues stand out: the dichotomy between petrographic and geochemical alteration; the lack of quantitative age constraints for specific diagenetic phases resulting in a poorly constrained admixture of local, basin-wide and over-regional (far-field) features; and an often insufficient understanding of the temperatures and compositions of diagenetic fluids. Here, the archive of Devonian marine limestones exposed to multiple far-field diagenetic events is used as an example to explore the above-listed issues. Methods applied include petrography, micro XRF, fluid inclusion data, clumped isotopes, δ13C and δ18O isotopes, 87Sr/86Sr ratios and quartz trace element data. Devonian limestones studied here were overprinted by two cross-cutting regional fault zones (T ≈ 230 °C) by multiple events between the Variscan Orogeny and the late Paleogene. The following processes are recorded: (i) protolith deposition and partial dolomitisation during rapid burial in the Middle/Late Devonian (T ≈ 180 °C); (ii) deep burial to ca 6.5 km and tectonic/hydrothermal overprint during the Variscan Orogeny in the Carboniferous (T ≈ 90–230 °C); (iii) rapid uplift to 1–2 km burial depth at the end of the Variscan Orogeny and hypogene karstification (T ≈ 50 to 100 °C) initiated by regional geology in the Permian/Triassic; (iv) tectonic/hydrothermal overprint during the opening of the Proto-Atlantic Ocean between the Early Jurassic and the Early Cretaceous (T ≈ 50 to 130 °C); (v) tectonic/hydrothermal overprint including renewed hypogene karstification and hydrothermal calcite cement precipitation (T ≈ 50 to 180 °C) during Alpine Orogeny between the Late Cretaceous and late Paleogene. Despite this complex series of diagenetic events, the protolith limestones largely preserved their respective Middle/Late Devonian dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and 87Sr/86Sr signatures. This study documents that geochemical proxy data, placed into their petrographic, paleotemperature, and local to over-regional context, significantly increases the ability to extract quantitative information from ancient carbonate rock archives. Whether tectonic strain from the early stage India‐Asia collision has synchronously affected the far‐field margin of the Tibetan Plateau is crucial for understanding plateau deformation and growth processes. However, direct evidence for early far‐field deformation remains scarce. Utilizing illite K‐Ar dating of three fault gouge samples, we established the faulting history of the Leibo fault zone (LFZ) at the southeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau (SEMTP). Consistent authigenic illite ages of 52 ± 2, 54 ± 12 and 55 ± 6 Ma suggest the reactivated thrust faulting of the LFZ in the Early Cenozoic. Positioned ∼700 km east of the collisional boundary and at the intersection of three blocks with distinct lithospheric rheology in strength/viscosity, this event suggests a quasi‐synchronous far‐field tectonic response in the SEMTP to the India‐Asia collision. Zircon is not a common accessory mineral of banded iron formation (BIF), but it occurs in all BIF samples from the Kostomuksha Greenstone Belt (KGB) in the Karelian Craton of the Fennoscandian Shield. The Kostomuksha BIF is of Algoma type and is part of three variably old rock associations: BIF-1 is part of a sedimentary sequence in Mesoarchean (2.87–2.84 Ga) basaltic komatiites with dacites, BIF-2 is located in Meso-Neoarchean (2.8–2.79 Ga) felsic volcanics, and BIF-3 is part of a Neoarchean (2.76–2.74 Ga) greywacke unit with felsic volcanics. Analysis of zircon has revealed grains with cores and several generations of rims. The U-Th-Pb systems of zircon indicate that its isotopic age varies considerably from 2.98 to 1.89 Ga, forming up to 4 age clusters in each sample. Most samples contain single inherited grains. The bulk of zircon in BIF is younger than the host rocks and is interpreted as metamorphic. Most of metamorphic zircons display an oscillatory zoning, and their Th/U ratio varies from 0.01 to 4.7, i.e. their origin is hard to interpret reliably, based on the above characteristics. Paleoproterozoic (1.89–1.85 Ga) zircons from BIF-1 and 3, occurring as rims and individual grains, are related to local tectono-thermal processes simultaneous with the formation of the Svecofennian orogen and were described for the central Karelian Craton for the first time. Thus, both inherited and metamorphic zircons have been revealed in Meso-Neoarchean BIF metamorphosed repeatedly in the Neoarchean-Paleoproterozoic under up to amphibolite-facies conditions. All metamorphic generations of zircons from BIF are correlated with the tectono-thermal events in the Karelian Craton, including the effect of the Svecofennian orogeny. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Bloubergstrand Member, consisting of mafic to intermediate tuffs and flows within the Tygerberg Formation of the Malmesbury Group, is a crucial but understudied component of the western Saldania Belt in southwestern Africa. With a U-Pb zircon age of 555 ± 5 Ma, these volcanic rocks provide valuable insights into the origins and, more broadly, the tectonic setting of the Saldania Belt during the final stages of Malmesbury Group sedimentation in the context of the construction of southwestern Gondwana at approximately 560 to 540 Ma. The Bloubergstrand Member amygdaloidal volcanic rocks vary from basaltic andesitic to andesitic and have experienced varying degrees of alteration. The volcanic rocks are enriched in the large ion lithophile elements (LILE) relative to the high field strength elements (HFSE). When normalised to primitive mantle values, they show enrichment in Cs, Rb, K and Pb and mild enrichment in Th, U, Zr and Hf, with the light rare earth elements (LREE) enriched relative to the heavy rare earth elements (HREE). They are depleted in Ba, Nb, Ta, Sr, Eu, P and Ti. eNd(t) values are mildly negative ranging from -3.60 to -2.39, and Nd TDM model ages range from 1.4 to 1.7 Ga. Initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios vary from 0.70478 to 0.70620, with one higher value of 0.72270, the latter likely due to extensive alteration. The Bloubergstrand Member volcanic rocks exhibit characteristics suggesting their origin from partial melting of lithospheric to transitional asthenospheric upper mantle, influenced by sediment-derived melts and variable degrees of crustal contamination. With continental arc basalt compositions and similarities to shoshonites, the samples reflect variable degrees of partial melting and source heterogeneities. Fractional crystallisation of pyroxenes, hornblende, and plagioclase contributes to compositional variability. Erupting in a continental arc margin, likely part of the Arachania block of the Kalahari craton, separated during the Tonian break-up of Rodinia, the volcanics were associated with the Marmora basin formed by eastward-directed subduction below the western Kaapvaal Craton margin. Extruded in a distal position relative to the Cuchilla Dionisio Arc in present-day southern Brazil and Uruguay, these volcanic rocks preceded the closure of the southern Marmora basin. The mantle melting, possibly a result of slab roll-back, break-off, ridge subduction, or a combination, served as a precursor to the lower crustal heating that generated the granitic magmas of the Cape Granite Suite. The Karkonosze-Izera Massif in the West Sudetes preserves evidence of subduction of the Saxothuringian Ocean beneath the Teplá-Barrandian Domain. Within the massif, the Leszczyniec metaigneous complex (LMC) is identified as the upper allochthon. It exhibits a unique structural history in comparison to the underlying allochthons, suggesting that the LMC records a distinctive tectonic history. To investigate the timing of this history, two orthogneisses were studied from a single outcrop of the LMC for in situ white mica Rb/Sr geochronology. The outcrop bears a southeast-dipping foliation (S1) and a north/northeast plunging stretching lineation (L1), defined by white mica and quartz. Quartz recrystallization textures, white mica chemistry (celadonite content of 0.23–0.47), preservation of igneous plagioclase phenocrysts, and the metamorphic mineral assemblage, all indicate maximum epidote–amphibolite facies conditions. Single-spot Rb/Sr dates were calculated from white mica using initial 87Sr/86Sr values obtained by titanite and epidote. Results are similar for both rocks, providing weighted averages of 352.4 ± 4.1 Ma (MSWD: 0.6; n: 24) and 349.3 ± 2.5 Ma (MSWD: 0.4; n: 31). The rocks are interpreted to have the same structural and metamorphic history; thus, a pooled weighted average of 350.1 ± 5.3 Ma (2σ) is reported as the timing of white mica (re)crystallization during S1 and L1 development in epidote–amphibolite facies conditions. This event is bracketed by the timing of blueschist-facies metamorphism for the subjacent middle (c. 364 Ma) and lower (c. 345–341 Ma) allochthons, associated with an east/southeast-plunging L1. Considering the different structural and metamorphic histories of the LMC compared to the subjacent allochthons, it is likely that the complex was extracted from the Teplá-Barrandian upper plate due to subduction erosion prior to collective exhumation and stacking of the Karkonosze-Izera Massif. The beetle subtribe Anthroherponina (Coleoptera: Leiodidae), including also ecologically specialized and semi-aquatic hygropetricolous genera, presents one of the most illustrative examples of morphological variability in cave-adapted animals. However, phylogenetic relations within the tribe remain dubious. Recent exploration of deep-phreatic caves of the Western Balkans Dinaric Karst enabled us to collect all known Anthroherponina genera and access new populations of hygropetricolous beetles, representatives of the iconic Hadesia and elusive Nauticiella. We studied the taxonomic structure of newly collected semi-aquatic beetle populations by using traditional morphology and deploying uni- and multilocus molecular species delimitation. In addition, we tested the monophyly of the subtribe Anthroherponina and set the group's evolutionary development into a palaeogeographic context by reconstructing a multilocus calibrated phylogeny. As a result, three new species of specialized semi-aquatic beetles are described. The morphologically based monophyly of Anthroherponina was shown to be an artefact of evolutionary convergences, while the evolutionary development of the monophylum seems to be paired with the orogeny of the Dinarides. The Imini mining district (southern foreland of the intraplate Atlasic belt of Morocco) hosts the largest Mn resources of North Africa, consisting of two laterally extensive bodies of high-grade pyrolusite-rich manganese ore and a third discontinuous medium-grade coronadite-rich Mn ore in a ~ 10–15-m-thick Cenomanian–Turonian dolostone unit. Until now, the origin and timing of the Mn ore have been poorly constrained. New Pb isotopic ratios show that Triassic series (basalts and ferruginous sandstone) are likely the source of the metals. 40Ar/39Ar dating of K-Mn oxides shows that the Mn-rich orebodies formed during at least three periods: late Cretaceous to late Paleocene (> 58 Ma), late Eocene (ca. 36.3 Ma), and early Burdigalian to early Serravalian probably in two pulses at ca. 19–20 Ma and ca. 13 Ma. These periods coincide with three known building phases of the Atlasic relief during late Cretaceous, late Eocene, and the Early(?)-Middle Miocene. We therefore propose the Atlasic tectonics as the first-order control of the Mn mineralization. Periods with regionally high elevations modified the climate to wetter conditions that supplied meteoric water to feed temporary aquifers. Relief building created the required hydraulic head to sustain (1) fluid-rock interaction between O2-poor acidic fluids and the Triassic series, (2) migration of the metal-rich fluid, and (3) to overpressure fluid in the Imini depositional site. The decreasing thickness of Triassic series in front of the Imini anticline forced these low-temperature (< 100 °C) fluids to mix with oxygenated and alkaline ground waters in the karst system and precipitate Mn oxides. The N70°-oriented Atlasic tectonic structure controls the orientation of the Mn deposits. The late Eocene–Early/Middle Miocene uplifts generated additional supplies and/or in situ remobilization of the primary late Cretaceous medium-grade ore to form the high-grade pyrolusite-rich ore. The balance between alkalinity generation by carbonate and silicate weathering and sulfuric acid generation by sulfide weathering controls the effect of weathering on atmospheric p CO 2 over geologic timescales. How this balance varies across environmental gradients remains poorly constrained. Here, we analyze this balance across an erosional gradient of two orders of magnitude in the Three Rivers (Yangtze, Mekong, and Salween Rivers) Headwater Region (TRHR), eastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP). By employing major element chemistry and multiple isotopes (δ34S SO 4 , δ18O SO 4 , and δ18O H 2 O) coupled with forward and inverse approaches, we unmix contributions of silicates, carbonates, evaporites, and sulfides to the total weathering budget. Across the TRHR, riverine SO 4 2– is derived mainly from a mixture of an evaporite source with uniform values of δ34S SO 4 and δ18O SO 4 , and a sulfide source that contributes highly variable values of δ34S (−12.2 ‰ to +4.1 ‰) and δ18O (−17.7 ‰ to −1.6 ‰). Contributions of sulfide oxidation to riverine SO 4 2– vary from 16 % to 94 %, and sulfuric acid consumes 6 % to 63 % of the alkalinity produced by weathering. The fractions of weathering alkalinity derived from carbonate weathering range from 36 % to 98 % relative to silicate weathering. The combination of silicate, carbonate, and sulfide weathering suggests that the instantaneous weathering fluxes of most sampled catchments in the TRHR act as a sink of atmospheric CO 2 over timescales shorter than marine carbonate burial (∼104 years), but as a carbon source over timescales longer than carbonate burial and shorter than sulfide burial (∼107 years). The spatial variability of the balance between alkalinity and acid generation, and, thus, the relationship between chemical weathering and atmospheric p CO 2 , are largely dependent on lithology. However, within comparable lithologic settings, sulfide and carbonate weathering rates rise with increasing erosion, whereas silicate weathering rates remain constant. Consequently, plateau weathering shifts from a sink to a source of atmospheric CO 2 with increasing erosion. These findings suggest that sulfide weathering is more sensitive to erosion than carbonate and silicate weathering, and that it could play an important role in the long-term carbon cycle during mountain building. Artemia is a genus of halophilic zooplanktons comprising bisexual and parthenogenetic forms, which is an important model for investigating adaption to hypersaline ecosystems. The genus Artemia in China comprises four species: A. sinica, A. tibetiana, A. franciscana and A. parthenogenetica. To investigate the evolutionary relationship of bisexual and parthenogenetic Artemia in China, we analyzed the morphometrics and phylogenetics among twenty-two geographical populations in China. We found significant morphological differentiation across different species and strains of Artemia in China, which exhibited a high level of intra-population variation. We also found overlaps in morphological characteristics between populations, which may raise challenges for the classification of Artemia species using traditional morphological methods. A. franciscana, which originated from various regions in America, was generally distributed along the Chinese coastlines through multiple human introductions. Additionally, native Asian clades split into Western and Eastern Lineages during the late Miocene due to the Himalayan orogeny. Within the Western Lineage, A. tibetiana can be grouped into three taxon units: A. tibeitiana, A. sorgeloosi and A. urmiana. We also found that the distribution and genetic structure of A. sinica were influenced by climate oscillations during the Pleistocene, which might play a pivotal role in driving the formation of parthenogenetic strains in the Eastern Lineage. The Sveconorwegian orogen in Scandinavia and the Grenville orogen in Canada are both remnants of large and hot orogens that formed part of the supercontinent Rodinia around 1 billion years ago. Formerly deeply buried portions of crust in these orogens are exposed and offer insights into the tectonic dynamics of the basement within large orogens. The Eastern Segment of the Sveconorwegian Province hosts a ~ 30 000 km2 crustal portion that was buried to c. 40 km depth at a late stage of the orogeny, 980–960 Ma ago, and is bound towards the foreland in the east by a ~ 25 km wide zone of step anastomosing deformation, the Frontal wedge. This zone represents the outermost ductile deformation that developed within the crystalline basement in the orogen. We investigated a heterogeneously deformed and recrystallised syenodiorite with the aim to understand the character of the deformation-related metamorphism within the Frontal wedge. Field relations, microtextures, and mineral reactions show that the metamorphic recrystallisation was governed by hydrous fluid infiltration along the ductile deformation zones. Equilibrium was attained on a millimetre scale only and metamorphic recrystallisation was dependent on the introduction of hydrous fluid. The metamorphism reached high-pressure epidote-amphibolite-facies; geothermobarometric estimates suggest 540°C to 600°C and 9 to 12 kbar. Metamorphic zircon formed during the breakdown of Zr-bearing igneous phases, primarily baddeleyite. SIMS U–Pb analyses of igneous zircon and baddeleyite date the igneous crystallisation of the syenodiorite at 1230 ± 6 Ma. Metamorphic zircon grains are <20 μm and too small for precise dating, but yielded ages around 1 Ga. Collectively, the metamorphic data indicate that subvertical movements along steep planes within the Frontal wedge allowed for the regional-scale tectonic burial to ~40 km depth of the Eastern Segment to the west. In this paper, we have synthesized the information derived from more than 20 papers and PhD theses on the anisotropy of the magnetic susceptibility (AMS) of 19 Variscan granite plutons, spanning the period between 320 Ma and 296 Ma. The AMS data are obtained from 876 sampling sites with more than 7080 AMS measurements and a re-interpretation is proposed. The studied granites exhibit a magnetic susceptibility (Km) ranging from 30 to 10,436 × 10−6 SI units. Most granites typically exhibit Km values below 1000 × 10−6 SI, indicative of paramagnetic behavior. Biotite serves as the main carrier of iron (Fe), emphasizing the reduced conditions prevalent during the formation of granite melts in the Variscan orogeny. The AMS fabrics of the studied granite plutons record the magma strain, expressing the chronologic evolution of the stress field during the orogeny. This chronologic approach highlights the magmatic events between around 330 and 315 Ma, occurring in an extensional regime, in which the Borralha pluton is an example of a suite that recorded this extensional AMS fabric. Plutons with ages between 315 and 305 Ma show AMS fabrics, pointing out their emplacement in a compressional tectonic regime related to the Variscan collision. The plutons, younger than 305 Ma, record AMS fabrics indicating that the tectonic setting for emplacement changes from a wrench regime to an extensional one at the end of the collision stage. This is evident as there is a chronological overlap between the granites that exhibit AMS fabrics indicating extension and the ones that have AMS fabrics indicating a wrench regime. It has been accepted that granitoids of the Irizar unit in the Central Victoria Land (Antarctica), as an important part of the Granite Harbour Intrusives, were formed in a post-collisional setting during the Ross orogeny along the margin of east Gondwana. However, the emplacement ages of the Irizar unit remain poorly constrained, making it difficult to form a more complete picture of the geodynamic evolution of the Ross orogen and its counterpart (Delamerian orogen) in southeast Australia. In this work, four syenogranite samples from the Irizar unit were chosen for SHRIMP zircon U-Pb dating, which yielded ages of 507.8–489.7 Ma. The new geochronological data indicate that the post-collisional extension in the Central Victoria Land had begun by ~508 Ma, much earlier than previously thought (i.e., 490–480 Ma). Integrated with U-Pb ages for Early Paleozoic granitoids from the literature, the Ross–Delamerian orogen shows that the post-collisional granitic magmatism initiated at ~515 Ma in the Central Transantarctic Mountains and northward systematically decreased to ~508 Ma in the Victoria Land, and then to ~487 Ma in southeast Australia. This work presents the first pressure–temperature‐deformation‐time (P–T‐d‐t) path obtained for the Lower Units (Alpine Corsica, France) including the Tenda Massif that represent fragments of the European continental margin involved in the east‐dipping Alpine subduction. The new thermobarometric data applied to metapelites and the new 40Ar/39Ar dating of syn‐kinematic muscovite sampled from metagranitoids allowed us to define the P–T conditions and the age of the metamorphism of the Venaco Unit, a Lower Unit located in the southernmost sector of the Alpine Corsica. The outcoming scenario indicates that the Venaco Unit reached the baric peak at ≈ 33 km depth, not before Bartonian time. At 35.7 Ma (i.e., during the middle Priabonian), it was exhumed to a shallower structural level (i.e., at ≈ 26 km depth), mainly through the activation of the top‐to‐W shear zones. This retrograde path suggests that the Venaco Unit experienced fast exhumation, unlike the Tenda Massif which had been involved in subduction during the Ypresian and was stationary at 25–30 km, before its exhumation in the Priabonian. The Trans‐North China Orogen (TNCO) is a major Palaeoproterozoic collisional orogen in the North China Craton and has experienced complex tectonic evolution during the assembly of the Eastern and Western Blocks. The vestiges of subducted oceanic crust preserved in this orogen can be used to gain insights into the subduction–collision process associated with the Palaeoproterozoic orogeny. In this study, we investigate garnet amphibolites from the Wanzi Group in the Fuping Complex along the TNCO through integrated petrography, mineral chemistry, phase equilibrium modelling and zircon U–Pb geochronology. Three stages of metamorphic mineral assemblages are identified as follows: (i) the prograde assemblage is preserved as plagioclase, amphibole, biotite and quartz inclusions in garnet porphyroblasts; (ii) the peak mineral assemblage includes coarse‐grained amphibole, garnet, plagioclase, ilmenite, biotite and quartz; and (iii) the retrograde assemblage is mainly represented by the corona of amphibole, plagioclase and biotite in the matrix. Petrological features and phase equilibrium modelling define a clockwise pressure–temperature path involving a prograde stage of 7.2–9.6 kbar and <670°C, peak conditions of 10.0–10.2 kbar and 690–810°C, and a retrograde stage with near‐isothermal decompression to ~7.4 kbar and cooling. Zircon U–Pb dating shows weighted mean ages of 1848 ± 22 Ma and 1836 ± 31 Ma, representing the growth of zircon in the retrograde stage during the uplift and cooling process. In combination with available data from the TNCO, the post‐peak decompression and cooling process is inferred to be long‐lived during 1.90–1.76 Ga, following collision along the TNCO that occurred during 1.97–1.90 Ga, ultimately leading to the final assembly of the North China Craton. The Early Paleozoic tectono-thermal event was a significant orogenic activity during the Phanerozoic era, which had a profound impact on the early crust of the South China Block (SCB) and established the foundation for later tectonic activity. The Wuyi-Yunkai orogenic belt in Southeastern China was extensively exposed to Early Paleozoic magmatism, the genetic mechanism of which remains controversial. To shed light on this issue, detailed petrological, geochemical, and zircon U–Pb–Hf isotopic studies were carried out on two granitoids, namely the Yuntongshan pluton and the Gaoqiao pluton, identified in the central Wuyishan. Zircon U–Pb chronology of the Yuntongshan and Gaoqiao bodies yielded ages of 437 ± 4 Ma (MSWD = 2.2) and 404 ± 2 Ma (MSWD = 12), respectively, indicating that they were emplaced during the Early Silurian and Early Devonian periods. These granitoids are primarily composed of biotite-granite and biotite-monzonitic-granites, with high concentrations of SiO2 (73.59–75.91 wt%), K2O + Na2O (8.31–8.73 wt%), and low contents of MgO, CaO, Cr, Ni. They are classified as high-K calc-alkaline and weakly metaluminous-strongly peraluminous S-type granites. These granitoids are enriched in light rare earth elements (LREEs) and large ion lithophile elements (LILEs) and depleted in heavy rare earth elements (HREEs) and high field strength elements (HFSEs) with arc affinity. The εHf(t) values of − 3.3 to − 15.4 with two-stage Hf model ages ranging from 2829 to 1644 Ma, combined with the presence of Neoproterozoic inherited zircons, suggest that the primary magma of these granitoids was derived from the partial melting of Neoproterozoic crust with a Paleoproterozoic crustal model age. These findings, combined with the spatio-temporal distribution of regional magmatism, reveal that the late Early-Paleozoic granitoids formed in the intraplate orogenic background originating from the subduction of the proto-Tethys Ocean and proto-Pacific Ocean around the margin of the east Gondwana supercontinent. Geochemistry, zircon U–Pb geochronology, and Hf isotope data for the Early Paleozoic granites in the Baoshan Block reveal the Early Paleozoic tectonic evolution of the Proto-Tethys. The samples are high-K, calc-alkaline, strongly peraluminous rocks with A/CNK values of 1.37–1.46, are enriched in SiO2, K2O, and Rb, and are depleted in Nb, P, Ti, Eu, and heavy rare earth elements, which indicates the crystallization fractionation of the granitic magma. Zircon U–Pb dating indicates that they formed in ca. 480 Ma. The Nansa granites have εHf(t) values ranging from − 16.04 to 4.36 with corresponding TCDM ages of 2.10–0.81 Ga, which suggests the magmas derived from the partial melting of ancient metasedimentary with minor involvement of mantle-derived components. A synthesis of data for the Early Paleozoic igneous rocks in the Baoshan block and adjacent (Tengchong, Qiangtang, Sibumasu, Himalaya, etc.) blocks indicates that these blocks were all aligned along the proto-Tethyan margin of East Gondwana in the Early Paleozoic. The Early Paleozoic S-type granites from Nansa were generated in a high-temperature and low-pressure (HTLP) extensional tectonic setting, which resulted from Andean-type orogeny instead of the final assembly of Gondwana or crustal extension in a non-arc environment. In certain places, an expanding environment may exist in opposition to the tectonic backdrop of the lithosphere's thickening and shortening, leading the crust to melt and decompress, mantle-derived materials to mix, and a small quantity of peraluminous granite to emerge. Situated in the western Sierras Pampeanas of San Luis, the Nogolí Metamorphic Complex has become a key geological locality for unraveling the construction of the western Gondwana margin on the South American tectonic plate. This study presents a comprehensive analysis, encompassing new petrological and geochronological data, along with a meticulous structural examination of two distinct regions within the Nogolí Metamorphic Complex. Our primary aim is to assess the age and provenance of the protoliths, thereby shedding light on their geodynamic evolution. Detrital zircon U–Pb ages, obtained from a quartz–feldspathic-schist paleosome within a metatexite exposure in the La Barranquita area, disclosed a polymodal distribution. The predominant age population, centered around 616 ± 11 Ma, suggests a late Neoproterozoic source (Brasiliano–Pan African orogen). A secondary, yet significant, age peak at 542 ± 12 Ma points to a late Ediacaran to Early Cambrian origin (Pampean orogen). Additionally, a peak ranging from 930 to 1144 Ma indicates contributions from an early Neoproterozoic source (Grenvillian–Sunsas orogen). The maximum depositional age was determined to be 533 ± 14 Ma, based on the calculation of the youngest grain cluster at 2σ uncertainty. This polymodal zircon-age spectrum indicates that the sedimentary protolith of the Nogolí Metamorphic Complex derived from a Cambrian-age crystalline basement situated along the western margin of Gondwana. Contrary to models invoking continent–continent collision in western Gondwana during the early Cambrian, our findings better support a ridge–trench collision as the most plausible hypothesis for the origin of the Pampean orogeny. The direct dating of gem-quality garnet mineralization has been extremely limited, even though it has been known for decades that garnet may be dated by the U–Pb method. Here, we demonstrate the application of in situ laser U–Pb geochronology on gem-quality tsavorite to determine the timing of mineralization from two localities in the Mozambique Belt, Tanzania. U–Pb dating of tsavorite from Merelani and Umba provides ages of 569.5 ± 6.8 Ma and 540.0 ± 5.8 Ma, respectively. Due to the high closure temperature of the U–Pb system in garnet, we argue that these ages correspond to tsavorite mineralization. These ages postdate the East African Orogeny (650–620 Ma), the most significant metamorphic episode recorded in the Mozambique Belt, which had been previously considered to be the main tsavorite mineralization event. Instead, these dates correspond to the later Kuungan orogenic episode (570–530 Ma), associated with the final amalgamation of Gondwana. The mineralization of tsavorite tens of millions of years after the East African Orogeny in the Mozambique Belt illustrates the benefits of direct dating of gem-quality garnet to determine mineralization timing and style. The tectonic position of the southwest section of the Qinzhou Bay-Hangzhou Bay Tectonic Junction Zone (QHTJZ) can be determined by examining the Qinzhou-Fangcheng Junction Zone (QFJZ) in Guangxi. This zone is significant because it was the location of the largest earthquake ever recorded in the inland region of South China, specifically the 1936 LingshanM6¾ earthquake in Guangxi. Therefore, this region serves as an optimal location for researching the origins of intraplate earthquakes in South China. This study presents a display of a broadband magnetotelluric (MT) prospecting profile that traverses the Guangxi QFJZ and the Lingshan earthquake zone, extending from the northwest (NW) to the southeast (SE). A resistivity structure model was generated using three-dimensional (3D) inversion technology along the profile. The main faults in QFJZ were analyzed in terms of their deep extension forms and tectonic attributes. This analysis was performed by integrating the results obtained from geology, gravity, wave velocity ratio, Global Position System (GPS), and geothermal flow. The results showed that (1) the Dongzhong-Xiaodong fault (DXf), the eastern Fangcheng-Lingshan fault (FLf2), and the eastern Hepu-Beiliu fault (HBf2) were all trans-crustal deep faults, and crust-mantle ductile shear zones developed in the deep part. Two electrical boundary zones, DXf and HBf2, were identified. DXf inclined towards the northwest, while HBf2 inclined towards the southeast. The Fangcheng-Lingshan fault (FLf) exhibits a tectonic style resembling a "flower" shape in the upper crust. In the deeper section, it is characterized by an electrical boundary zone that gradually slopes towards the southeast direction. (2) The Hunan-Guangxi Passive Continental Margin (HGPCM) on the NW side of DXf had a stratified resistivity structure and relatively stable Bouguer gravity anomalies, which conformed to the quasi-craton tectonic attribute of the local failure at the southeastern margin of the Yangtze Block (YB). The southeastern side of this block is marked by the presence of the QFJZ and Yunkai Magmatic Arc (YKMA). These areas exhibit varying Bouguer gravity anomalies, indicating a combination of high and low resistivity in their electrical structures. This suggests that this zone has undergone multiple stages of structural evolution and transformation. The giant high-resistivity body under the Qinzhou-Fangcheng Remnant Ocean Basin (QFROB) might be the trace left by the extinction of the South China Ocean and the collision orogeny between YB and the Cathaysian Block (CB). The presence of sub-low-resistivity layers in the middle-lower crust between the Liuwandashan Magmatic Arc (LMA) and YKMA indicates that this particular zone is being influenced from a distance by magmatic activities originating from the Leiqiong mantle. (3) The focal area of the 1936 Lingshan earthquake was located in the brittle high-resistivity body with a low strain rate. Under the coupling action of NWW-SEE regional tectonic stress and deep thermodynamic force, the brittle high-resistivity body in the upper crust became the main body for accumulating the tectonic stress. The Lingshan earthquake occurred due to the dextral strike-slip fracture instability of FLf2, a rock layer with slightly lower strength in the sub-high-resistivity zone. This instability was triggered when the accumulated stress reached the ultimate rock strength. The unveiling of the seismogenic model of the Lingshan earthquake, as presented in this study, holds significant scientific importance in comprehending the factors contributing to intraplate earthquakes in the South China region. The multicoloured 'Košna' conglomerates are investigated in the area of the Košna Voda spring, in the Brušane area of Velebit Mt., Croatia. The studied conglomerates consist of red-coloured matrix and clasts of various lithologies (sandstones, limestones, chert and quartz pebbles) and sizes, suggesting provenance from different areas. Average clast size and their percentage was determined by the Udden-Wentworth classification with estimation of the matrix content. Clasts and matrix lithological and mineralogical characteristics were determined using petrographic, ore microscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis. Sandstone clasts in the studied conglomerates are classified as lithic arenites, subarkoses and arkoses. Limestone clasts are mostly wackestones to packstones with foraminifera, ostracods, echinoid and bryozoan fragments that derive from late Carboniferous/early Permian shallow-marine limestones. Calcispheres and incipient growth forms of Microcodium are also present, suggesting different sediment sources and resedimentation processes. Fragments of fusulinid foraminifera were identified in the matrix of the 'Košna' conglomerates. Based on the analyses performed, and field observations, the 'Košna' conglomerates are described as early Permian (Cisuralian) polymictic clast-supported to matrix-supported conglomerates and breccia-conglomerates that share structural and textural similarities with conglomerates from other areas in the Dinarides, as well as in the Eastern and Southern Alps. The 'Košna' conglomerates are younger than the Sakmarian and are comparable with the Trogkofel limestones of the Carnic Alps and the Karavanke Mts. in Slovenia. We suggest that the studied deposits originated from the uplifted Variscan Mountains during the Variscan and Saalian orogenic movements, and were finally deposited from tractive flows and occasional debris flows in a shallow marine environment of the Palaeo-Tethys, possibly in fan deltas. The Longshou Shan, located in western China, plays a crucial role in connecting the Tarim Continent with the North China Craton. It provides valuable insights into the Cenozoic intracontinental deformation, the complex dynamics of Eurasian tectonics, and the relationship between the pre-Cenozoic Tethys and Central Asian orogenic systems. Consequently, comprehending the evolution of the Phanerozoic era in this region holds immense significance. Zircon (U-Th)/He (ZHe) dating was conducted on three granite samples (n = 18) collected from the Longshou Shan. The ZHe dates of these granite rocks range from 7.2 to 517.7 Ma, showing a negative correlation with eU values. Furthermore, a limestone sample from the Longshou Shan yielded ZHe (n = 4) ages of 172.0–277.1 Ma and AHe (n = 4) ages of 17–111.9 Ma. The area has undergone complex tectonic processes involving multiple phases of uplift and burial. Using both forward and inverse modeling methods, we aim to establish plausible thermal histories. Our models reveal: (1) Late Paleozoic unroofing; (2) Early Mesozoic cooling and Late Mesozoic regional stabilization; and (3) Cenozoic reheating and subsequent cooling. By investigating the intricate thermal history of the Longshou Shan through multi-method modeling, we compare different approaches and assess the capabilities of single ZHe dating for understanding a thermal history. Understanding lithospheric rheology is crucial in investigating tectonic evolution of intra‐continental tectonic boundary. Here, we use geodetic observations to infer lithospheric rheology across the northeastern Tibet based on a 2D viscoelastic model. Our findings reveal a lower‐crust viscosity of <1022 Pa·s underneath its margins, lower than those estimated underneath its vicinities. By comparing deformation patterns and lithospheric rheology here with those observed in the eastern Tibet, we propose that lateral variations in lower‐crust viscosity control deformation patterns and topographic gradients along the Tibet margins. The presence of low viscosity lower‐crust can lead to the development of contrasting topographic gradients and shape the plateau's geomorphology and deformation characteristics during outward growth of the Tibet. We here emphasize the subtle variations in the lower‐crust rheology between deforming blocks and the corresponding mountain ranges, which play an important role in orogeny along the intracontinental convergence boundary. We show that the lower‐crust viscosity underneath the margin of northeastern Tibet is notably lower compared to those of underneath its surrounding areas. By comparing these findings with the distinct topography, deformation patterns, and lithospheric rheology observed across the eastern margin of Tibet, we propose that lateral variations in lower‐crust viscosity between active tectonic blocks control the formation of mountain range‐fronts. The weak lower‐crust underneath the mountain ranges exerts a significant influence on uplift dynamics, determining the location of the maximum surface uplift and topographic gradient. A broad region of Mesozoic to Cenozoic tectonism along the western and central Circum-Mediterranean (CM) margins, from southern Spain (Betic Cordillera) to the northern Morocco (Rif) and Italy (Apennines), includes huge volumes of sedimentary record since the Late Paleozoic. These sediments are contemporaneous and related with the fragmentation of the Pangean supercontinent due to the rifting and progressive closure, as well as the following birth of the CM orogeny. The composition and stratigraphic relations of clastics in diverse sedimentary basins of the CM region reflect a complete record of provenance relations related to the progressive destruction of the Neotethyan Ocean and plate convergence between the two major plates of Europe and Africa, and Iberia, Adria and Mesomediterranean micrplates located between them. The changing nature of clastic wedges reflects the provenance relations from different source rocks involving obduction of the oceanic lithosphere, the uplifted Alpine-Mediterranean Chains, and the accreted previously deformed Mesomediterranean Microplate (AlKaPeCa), as well local neovolcanic sources, within the spatial and temporal evolving geo-puzzle terranes of the CM orogeny. The provenance evolution of sediment provides insights into how plate convergence and continental collision direct the sediment dispersal pathway in Cenozoic basins due to closure of eastern and southern Alpine-Tethyan remnant ocean basins and to the dual dispersal pathways from the previously born Alps and the nascent AlKaPeCa at the expenses of the previously deformed Mesomediterranean terranes. The source-to-sink relations testify episodic deformation events, diachronous Tethyan basin development, differentiate sediment provenance from exhumed and uplifted Alpine and CM orogens, and palaeogeographic rearrangement of crustal blocks along the nascent Mediterranean region. An east–west‐trending medium‐grained mafic sill containing co‐genetic Fe–Ti oxide ore lenses is found disposed within granite gneisses around Saltora‐Mejia area in the eastern part of the Chotanagpur Granite Gneissic Complex (CGGC) of eastern India. CGGC is considered as a Proterozoic mobile belt as it witnessed multiple phases of deformation and high‐ grade metamorphism during 1.8–0.8 Ga. Occurrence of such Fe–Ti oxide ore‐bearing mafic sill is unique in the entire CGGC which is a vast Proterozoic orogenic belt and has witnessed many phases of voluminous mafic and felsic magmatisms. The mafic rock is of gabbronorite composition which contains plagioclase, clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene as major constituent primary minerals and amphibole as late magmatic mineral. The rock shows sub‐ophitic, intergranular, mosaic and poikilitic texture (defined by larger pargasitic grain). The gabbronorite shows iron enriched tholeiitic character, low Mg#, low abundances of Ni and Cr, slight enrichment in LILE, LREE and slight depletion in HFSE like Nb and Ti. The computed melt in equilibrium with the studied gabbronorite shows transitional orogenic to anorogenic, within‐plate and E‐MORB‐like geochemical character. In this study, the U–Pb zircon crystallization age (~960 Ma) of the Saltora‐Mejia gabbronorite is reported for the first time which coincides with the late tectonic stage of the most pervasive orogenic activity in the CGGC around 1.2–0.9 Ga. Transitional orogenic to anorogenic geochemical character, late tectonic evolution and other field and laboratory evidences together suggest evolution of the Saltora‐Mejia gabbronorite sill in a late tectonic extensional environment which might have been facilitated by delamination of a subducted plate and upwelling of asthenospheric mantle during the waning stage of a major orogeny in the CGGC. The study area is located in the Poli Group, Western Cameroon Domain of the Central African Fold Belt. It is constituted mainly of Pan‐African granitoids intruding Neoproterozoic volcano‐sedimentary rocks, schists and gneisses. The granitoids host dykes of gabbroic and dioritic rocks which are the focus of this study. Gabbroic and dioritic rocks are clinopyroxene‐hornblende gabbros, clinopyroxene‐hornblende melagabbro, clinopyroxene‐hornblende leucogabbro and quartz‐diorite. Geochemically, the rocks are characterized by: SiO2 (46.03–58.88 wt. %); Mg# (27.78–79.46); MgO (2.10–18.40 wt.%); total alkali (0.97–10.7 wt.%); Fe2O3 (8.42–13.19 wt.%); and CaO (4.90–16.57 wt. %), meanwhile all the rare earth elements are enriched with respect to chondrites. The rocks are mainly medium‐K calc‐alkaline with subordinate low‐K and alkaline samples. The ratios of La/Ta (4.0–76.0), La/Nb (0.8–9.88) and Zr/Ba (0.11–0.52) indicate that their source is both asthenospheric and lithospheric. This source has characteristics of NMORB to EMORB, overprinted by fluids‐enriched silicic and carbonatitic metasomes likely as a result of slab‐mantle interactions in a subduction environment. The weak to strong fractionation of La/Yb ratio (La/YbN = 0.9–13.51) and non‐fractionation of the Dy/Yb ratio (Dy/YbN = 0.6–1.5) together with the behaviour of the rocks in the La/Sm versus Sm/Yb modelization diagram are consistent with a polybaric melting which started in the asthenosphere at a small rate, yielding the limited volume of alkaline rocks. It then continued in the lithosphere where a more extensive degree of melting produced medium‐K calc‐alkaline rocks. The melting was likely induced by the adiabatic decompression of the metasomatized mantle during the post‐collisional relaxation closing the tectonic stage of the Pan‐African Orogeny in the Poli area.
