This paper documents new country records of five alien armoured scale insect species (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Diaspididae), in India, their possible spread and probable threat to crops and ornamental plants grown indoors and outdoors. The insects were mostly collected in open fields, and on indoor plants grown in residential and office areas. The following alien species are recorded from India for the first time: Duplaspidiotus claviger (Cockerell), Lepidosaphes laterochitinosa Green, Kuwanaspis howardi (Cooley), Rutherfordia malloti (Rutherford) and Aulacaspis alisiana Takagi. Each of the five species is diagnosed using a combination of unique field and slide-mounted identification characters. This study investigated the in vitro antimicrobial and anthelmintic effect of copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) against the bacterium Aeromonas hydrophila, the monogeneans Dactylogyrus minutus, Dactylogyrus extensus, Gyrodactylus cyprini, and the cestode Schyzocotyle acheilognathi, as well as their toxicity to Cyprinus carpio Koi. In the antimicrobial in vitro test, the inhibition zone method and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) were performed. In order to determine the time and efficacy of monogenean parasite mortality, the parasites were exposed to CuNP concentrations of 20, 50, 100, 150, 200, and 300 mg L−1, and a control group with tank water and one with copper sulphate pentahydrate (CuSO4.5H2O) at a concentration of 0.3 mg L−1, performed in triplicate. The parasites were observed every 10 min for 300 min, and mortality was recorded. For the cestodes, parasites were immersed in CuNP concentrations of 50, 100, 150, and 300 mg L−1. At the end of the in vitro tests, the anthelmintic efficacy of each treatment was calculated. To assess the tolerance and toxicity in fish, they were exposed to CuNP concentrations of 0.6, 1.25, 2.5, 5, 10, 20, and 50 mg L−1 for 12 h. The MIC demonstrated that CuNPs effectively inhibited the growth of A. hydrophila up to a dilution of 12,500 mg L−1 and showed an inhibition zone of 14.0 ± 1.6 mm for CuNPs. The results of anthelmintic activity showed a dose‐dependent effect of concentration for both groups of parasites, with the most effective concentration being 300 mg L−1 in 120 min. In the toxicity test, the carps showed tolerance to lower concentrations. The study indicated that CuNPs were effective against the studied pathogens. However, it proved to be toxic to fish at high concentrations. The use of low concentrations is recommended still requires further investigation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to develop a feeding protocol for the larviculture of Apistogramma cacatuoides, using the histological approach to larval nutrition conditions. For this, three experiments were carried out. Experiment 1 was carried out in a randomized design to determine the optimal amount of Artemia nauplii (AN) per larva, and three treatments were evaluated: P1—feeding with 25 A. nauplii per larva (AN/L) during the first 5 days, followed by 50 AN/L from the 6th to the 10th day and 100 AN/L from the 11th to the 20th day; P2 and P3—37 and 50 AN/L during the first 5 days, 75 and 100 AN/L from the 6th to the 10th day and 150 and 200 AN/L from the 11th to the 20th day. Experiment 2 was carried out in a randomized design to determine the daily frequency of feeding and evaluated four feeding frequencies: F1—feeding only once a day (09:00); (F2)—feeding twice a day (09:00 and 17:00); F3—feeding three times a day (09:00, 11:30 and 17:00); and F4—feeding four times a day (09:00, 11: 30, 14:00 and 17:00). Experiment 3 lasted 40 days and was conducted in a randomized design to evaluate three periods for the beginning of the feeding transition: WE10:AN for 10 days, followed by 3 days of co‐feeding and commercial feed until the end of the experimental period; WE15:AN for 15 days, followed by 3 days of co‐feeding and commercial feed; WE20:AN for 20 days, followed by 3 days of co‐feeding and commercial feed. The results of this study showed that, for the best development of the larvae, they should receive the feeding protocol 50−100−200 AN/L (P3) until the 20th day of exogenous feeding. From the 21st day, the transition to inert food should begin with 3 days of co‐feeding, and feeding during larviculture should be carried out at a frequency of twice a day; this protocol provided a good nutritional status for the larvae, as shown by the histological approach. Red Melon (RM) and Red Cover (RC) discus (Symphysodon spp.) are ornamental fish varieties that were selectively bred from the wild parental lineages of the brown discus S. aquafaciatus over many generations, resulting in distinct cutaneous patterns from juveniles to adults. To better understand the underlying mechanisms, skin samples were collected from juveniles aged 60 days and adults aged 1 year from RM and RC for investigations. Microscopic observation detected xanthophores and erythrophores in all samples, except RC juveniles with no erythrophores. Melanophores were presented only in RC. The comparative analysis revealed that genes involved in pteridine synthesis (gch1 and zgc:153031), one‐carbon metabolism (aldh1l2 and zgc153031), and lipid metabolism (apoda and klf1) were differentially expressed in RM juveniles, which may be associated with the development of erythrophores and xanthophores. The temporal inhibition of melanophore differentiation and development was observed in RM juveniles, coupled with elevated expression of notum2 and sost, two antagonist genes in Wnt‐signaling, suggesting their roles in melanophore development. Distinct pigment pattern between RM and RC since the juvenile stage may be driven by the differential expression of multiple axial developmental genes, including GATA, ankyrin, and mitotic spindle orientation proteins. This is the first report to describe the differential growth of cutaneous pigments and the molecular processes involved in red discus. Objective: The rising demand for ornamental fish and plants in aquariums is met through industrial production. However, higher production densities may negatively impact water quality (such as ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, and dissolved oxygen levels), thus impacting production. This can be mitigated by utilizing specific aquatic plants to promote sustainable ornamental fish production. This study aimed to determine how the water quality in ornamental fish tanks can be improved using two floating aquarium plant species: Najas grass Najas guadalupensis and Java moss Taxiphyllum barbieri. Methods: The efficiency of nitrate and phosphate filtration by the two plant species was determined in aquariums containing Endler Guppies Poecilia wingei. The duration of the study was 4 weeks, and the water quality parameters were measured weekly. The growth rates of the two plants were measured at the beginning and end of the study period. Result: Najas grass effectively maintained lower nitrate and phosphate levels while showing robust growth. By week 4, nitrate levels in control tanks rose to 33.75 and 35.00 mg/L in the two independent experiments, while nitrate in tanks with Najas grass only reached 8.75 and 11.50 mg/L. Phosphate levels in control tanks increased to 2.42 and 2.40 mg/L compared to 1.075 and 1.05 mg/L in tanks with Najas grass. In single‐species tanks, Najas grass showed a 1.6‐fold biomass increase, while Java moss showed a 1.2‐fold increase. In tanks with both species, Najas grass biomass increased significantly, whereas Java moss biomass decreased. Conclusion: The superior competitive ability of Najas grass (allelopathy and increased nutrient uptake) underlies the findings of this study and indicates that this species is a better option for maintaining low levels of nitrate and phosphate in aquarium water. This finding can contribute to creating a cleaner and healthier environment for fish species involved in industrial ornamental fish production and trade. Background: It is widely reported that exotic larvicidal fishes like Gambusia and Poecilia have adverse impact on the native aquatic fauna. The present study highlights the efficacy of two colourful native murrels, primarily designated as ornamental fish, Channa bleheri and Channa stewartii as biocontrol agent of mosquito larvae. Methods: Live specimens of Channa bleheri and C. stewartii, collected from the wetlands of Tinsukia district of Upper Assam, were assessed for their larvivorous potential at individual and group levels during day and night by dividing the specimens into two size groups. After 12 hour and 24 hour starvation, the test specimens (mean size for small group 8.67-9.17 cm and that of large group 11.63-13.27 cm) were given known number of mosquito larvae and recorded the consumption rate. Result: The predation rate varied from 33.3±4.36 to 71.6±5.15/min for Channa bleheri and that of C. stewartii from 16.3±0.95 to 68.2±2.77/min. In both species, smaller sized specimens were better performers as predators. Predation rate at 12 and 24 hrs of starvation and between day and night proved that these native murrels are excellent predators of mosquito larvae. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Following a request from the European Commission, EFSA was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the safety and efficacy of tea tree oil obtained from leaves and terminal branchlets of Melaleuca alternifolia (Maiden & Betche) Cheel when used as a sensory additive for all animal species. The EFSA Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) concluded that tea tree oil was very unlikely to be of safety concern for long‐living and reproductive animals and is of no concern for target species for fattening at the following concentrations in complete feed: 1.1 mg/kg for chickens for fattening, 1.5 mg/kg for turkeys for fattening, 1.7 mg/kg for laying hens, 2.0 mg/kg for piglets, 2.4 mg/kg for pigs for fattening, 3.1 mg/kg for sows, 5.0 mg/kg for veal calves (milk replacer) and salmonids, 4.4 mg/kg for cattle for fattening, sheep/goats and horses, 2.9 mg/kg for dairy cows, 1.8 mg/kg for rabbits, 0.9 mg/kg for cats, 5.3 mg/kg for dogs, 6.6 for crustaceans and 15 mg/kg for ornamental fish. These conclusions were extrapolated to other physiologically related species. For any other species, the additive is very unlikely to be of safety concern at 1.1 mg/kg complete feed. No concerns for consumers and the environment were identified following the use of the additive up to the highest safe use level in feed. Regarding user safety, tea tree oil should be considered as an irritant to skin and eyes and as a dermal and respiratory sensitiser. It is classified as a reprotoxic substance (category 1B) following CLP criteria and should be handled accordingly. Since M. alternifolia and its preparations were recognised to flavour food and its function in feed would be essentially the same as that in food, no further demonstration of efficacy was considered necessary. Following a request from the European Commission, EFSA was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the safety and efficacy of tartrazine as sensory additive (functional group: (a) colourants: (i) substances that add or restore colour in feedingstuffs). Tartrazine is intended to be incorporated in fishing baits up to a maximum of 30 mg/kg in complementary feed in order to colour them and attract fish in freshwater (ponds, rivers), for both recreational and competitive fishing. The additive is not intended for use in aquaculture. Tartrazine is already authorised for use with cats and dogs, ornamental fish, grain‐eating ornamental birds and small rodents. The EFSA Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) concluded that the use of tartrazine in the preparation of baits for freshwater fish under the proposed conditions of use is of no concern for the target animals. The use of tartrazine as a feed additive under the proposed conditions of use is considered safe for the consumer and the environment. Regarding the user safety, the additive should be considered a dermal and respiratory sensitiser. Inhalation and dermal exposure are considered a risk. The FEEDAP Panel could not conclude on the irritation potential of the additive. In absence of data, no conclusion can be reached on the efficacy of tartrazine in freshwater fish baits. Following a request from the European Commission, EFSA was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the safety and efficacy of an essential oil from the flowering tops of Thymbra capitata (L.) Cav. (Spanish type origanum oil) when used as a sensory additive in feed and in water for drinking for all animal species. The EFSA Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) concluded that the additive under assessment is considered safe up to the maximum use level in complete feed of 15 mg/kg for poultry species, 30 mg/kg for pigs and horses, 20 mg/kg for ruminants, 25 mg/kg for rabbits, dogs, cats and ornamental fish, and 125 mg/kg for salmonids. These conclusions were extrapolated to other physiologically related species. For any other species, the additive is safe at 15 mg/kg complete feed. The FEEDAP Panel considered that the use level in water for drinking is safe provided that the total daily intake of the additive does not exceed the daily amount that is considered safe when consumed via feed. The use of the additive in animal feed under the proposed conditions of use is safe for the consumer and the environment. Regarding user safety, the essential oil under assessment should be considered as an irritant to skin and eyes and as a dermal and respiratory sensitiser. Since T. capitata and its preparations were recognised to flavour food and its function in feed would be essentially the same as that in food, no further demonstration of efficacy was considered necessary. Assessing ammonia in water is very important for fish farmers as it is one of the pollutants that may affect the water quality. In water, ammonia can be found either in the form of unionised ammonia (NH3) or ionised ammonia (NH4 +), which contribute to a total ammonia nitrogen (TAN). In assessing the ammonia toxicity, NH3 provides a more accurate measure of toxicity and needs to be monitored consistently, rather than relying solely on TAN. However, the method of measuring NH3 in water can be complex and challenging. Therefore, the ability to determine the correlation between NH3 and other parameter which is easier to be measured (such as pH) is crucial to enable the estimation of NH3. This study was conducted to determine the correlation between NH3 and pH based on the data collected from Redgold Aquatics ornamental fishponds located in Sik, Kedah. The pH was assessed by a commercial measuring device, while the NH3 was calculated using an appropriate mathematical equation that requires the data of pH, TAN, and temperature. The correlation and regression analysis were conducted via t h e IBM SPSS tool and Microsoft Excel. The result shows that NH3 and pH are highly correlated with regression equation of NH3 = 0.01pH -- 0.07. In addition, factors that may affect the total ammonia value have been discussed thoroughly in this work. The ornamental fish business in Indonesia, especially at Laladon Ornamental Fish Exchange, Bogor, has experienced a significant decline after the Covid-19 pandemic. This study aims to analyze the factors that influence the sale of ornamental fish at the location. The research was conducted from May to August 2023 using purposive sampling method on 9 active ornamental fish traders. Data collected included location profile, technical and economic aspects of marketing. Data analysis was carried out with qualitative and quantitative descriptive analysis, as well as statistical tests using Kruskal-Wallis and Spearman rank correlation. The results showed that the variables that significantly influenced sales were fish stock (0.833), number of fish species (0.711), fish storage capacity (0.833), repeat purchases by businesses (0.900), and fish sales (0.983). The decline in sales in the post-pandemic period was caused by various internal and external factors. These findings indicate the need for improvements in product management and marketing strategies to improve sales performance of ornamental fish at Laladon Ornamental Fish Exchange. There is a claimed increase in the global prevalence and incidence of emerging diseases observed in many organisms. Myxozoa represents an essential group of metazoan parasites that hold both economic and ecological significance. In the current study, 1% of the fish population at two commercial goldfish (Carassius auratus) farms in Tehran and Ghom province, Iran, developed cavitating muscular lesions resembling humps in February 2021 and January 2022. Fish displaying pathological abnormalities were transported to the Ornamental Fish Clinic and subjected to clinical examination. Light microscopy was subsequently used to examine wet smears of skin and gills, as well as whitish exudate. In addition, tissue homogenates were collected for more precise identification and molecular confirmation. The study discovered that individuals from the goldfish farms were infected with the pathogenic myxozoan Myxobolus lentisuturalis, which caused significant damage to the epaxial muscles. The spores collected from the humps had a lack of uniformity and were primarily ellipsoidal in shape. Histopathological analysis also revealed parasites in various stages of development, such as plasmodia and spores, as well as inflammatory cell infiltration (macrophage, giant cell and lymphoplasmacytic infiltration) between skeletal muscle fibers. Phylogenetic analysis of M. lentisuturalis was performed by using MEGA 11 and the maximum likelihood method. M. lentisuturalis is a myxozoan parasite that has been sparsely recorded and lacks widespread recognition. The current study is the first clinical, histopathological, and molecular characterization of M. lentisuturalis isolated from the skeletal musculature of goldfish (C. auratus) in Iran. Global ornamental fish transportation ranging from hours to days can produce multiple stress factors impact fish health and cause mortality. Clownfish, particularly Amphiprion ocellaris, are among the most traded saltwater ornamental fish. Vibrio includes several pathogenic strains that affect aquatic animals. Consequently, prophylactic treatment of the water or fish is recommended. In this study, six Vibrio strains including V. alginolyticus, V. parahaemolyticus and V. harveyi isolated from sick A. ocellaris and one V. harveyi strain from a sick East Asian fourfinger threadfin (Eleutheronema rhadinum) were tested for their sensitivity to a popular disinfectant, chlorine dioxide (ClO2). The results showed that 0.25 ppm ClO2 effectively suppressed five of the seven tested Vibrio strains for 24 h; however, 0.1 ppm ClO2 is safer for A. ocellaris. Meanwhile, ClO2 2.5 ppm reduced the bacterial counts to below 3.3 × 105 CFU/mL for 24 hours. The LC50 of ClO2 for A. ocellaris was 0.87 ppm at 10 min and 0.72 ppm at 24 h post treatment. Mild changes in water quality, including dissolved oxygen (DO), temperature and pH, were recorded during the trial. More research is necessary to understand the sensitivity of various aquatic animal pathogens to ClO2 and its toxicity to different aquatic animals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is known that natural feed, in addition to being preferred because it moves, also has dyes that make the color of ornamental fish more contrasting than artificial feed. The purpose of this study is to find out which type of natural feed (Silk Worm (Tubifex sp.), Daphnia sp., Frozen Blood Worm) and artificial feed, which is more effective against the growth and brightness of the color of Glofish Starfire Red, which will be carried out in August 2024-October 2024 in Cianjur Regency, West Java Province. The study was conducted using an experimental method using a Complete Random Design (RAL) with 4 treatments and 3 replicates. The treatment given is as follows: A (Research using natural feed Daphnia sp, B (Research using natural feed Bloodwarm/Chironomidae, C (Research using natural feed Tubifex sp), D (Research using artificial feed). Ulcerative dermatitis (UD) is common in ornamental fish collections and is typically associated with a wide range of bacterial aetiologies. Clinical reports describing Shewanella xiamenensis‐associated UD are limited, however, despite growing attention to pathogenic Shewanella species in fish. Two out of 95 koi carp with UD were presented for clinical assessment by a commercial collection (n = 3000 fish) and subsequently killed on welfare grounds for necropsy. Both specimens exhibited extensive cutaneous ulcers and coelomic fat necrosis with petechial haemorrhages on post‐mortem examination. Shewanella xiamenensis was cultured from ulcerated skin tissues taken from both fish, with consistent intralesional gram‐negative rod‐like bacteria seen on skin scrape cytology. Histology also confirmed intralesional gram‐negative rod‐like bacteria within multiple ulcerative and erosive dermatitis lesions, plus myofibre necrosis and necrotising coelomic steatitis, in both specimens. Features associated with impaired generalised osmoregulation secondary to UD were detected within the striated muscle underlying the ulcers, the gills, and the caudal aspects of the kidneys. Additional histological features suggestive of sepsis were also seen in one of the fish. In the interim period, morbidity had increased from 3.2% to around 30% of the entire stock. Following culture results, increased pond water changes were implemented (q.2‐3d) and the remaining stock was treated with florfenicol, resulting in complete resolution of UD in the collection (as per client). The study examined Xenentodon cancila (Hamilton) breeding biology, reproduction, and larval rearing. In this study, gonadosomatic index (GSI) and fecundity were measured for breeding biology every 15 days. Nine doses of common carp pituitary gland (CPG), human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), and Ovaprim for breeding were administered, except in the control treatment that was without hormones. Mustard oil cake (D1), powdered feed (D2), and one-day-old live tilapia (Oreochromis sp.) larvae (D3) were used to determine larval survival after 28 days. From the end of May to mid-July, the mean GSI value exceeded 15 ± 0.72%, peaking at 16.02 ± 1.28% in June. Mean fecundity ranged from 110 ± 13.34 to 2961 ± 318.57, peaking at the end of June 2019, which indicated that this was the peak breeding season for X. cancila. The best spawning was with CPG at 20 mg kg−1 fish body weight (BW) and Ovaprim at 1.0 ml kg−1 BW, but the control group (B) and the group administered 500 IU kg-1 HCG (H1) did not spawn. Latency and hatching periods were 19-21 and 260-288 h, respectively. The highest fertilization, hatching, and survival rates were 92 ± 4.63%, 69 ± 5.52%, and 66 ± 4.11% with 20 mg kg−1 CPG (C2), while the next closest value was recorded with 1.0 ml kg−1 Ovaprim (O2). After 28 days, D3 had the highest survival rate (47.5 ± 4.62%), followed by D2 (31 ± 2.42%), and D1 (18 ± 1.54%). Following a request from the European Commission, EFSA was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the safety of indigo carmine as a colourant feed additive for cats, dogs and ornamental fish. In its previous opinion, the FEEDAP Panel concluded that indigo carmine is safe for cats and dogs at levels up to 250 mg/kg complete feed and for ornamental fish up to 1000 mg/kg complete feed. These conclusions were limited to indigo carmine with a purity of at least 93% colouring matter. For the current assessment, the applicant submitted additional data on the characterisation and on the toxicological profile to support the safety of the additive with the purity of at least 85% colouring matter. Based on the new data submitted, the FEEDAP Panel concludes that indigo carmine (purity of at least 85% colouring matter) is safe for cats and dogs at levels up to 250 mg/kg complete feed and for ornamental fish up to 1000 mg/kg complete feed. Objective: While North American fishes are often overlooked by the ornamental fish industry, there is growing interest in fishes native to the southeastern USA, a hot spot for fish diversity. The Metallic Shiner Pteronotropis metallicus, a small‐bodied leuciscid native to Florida and Georgia, is sometimes available in the ornamental fish trade through wild collection and limited captive production. This species exhibits a distinctive color pattern straddling the lateral line: a dorsal pink to red line, fading to a black to blue stripe. This group of minnows is largely unknown to ornamental aquaculture and lacks defined culture protocols. Our objective was to develop culture protocols for the Metallic Shiner. Methods: Following collection of wild broodstock, we used routine culture methods to experimentally determine substrate preference, egg incubation, egg disinfection, larval feeding, and larval development. Result: Metallic Shiner spawning was more successful on yarn mops compared with other media, with average output of >50 embryos per tank per day. Hatching success was similar for static incubators (24%) and upwelling incubators (20%) and was also similar among egg disinfection treatments (iodine, hydrogen peroxide, and formalin). Larval feeding regimes altered survival, with Otohime A1 exhibiting higher survival (44%) over 14 days posthatch (dph) and better growth than other feeding regimes. During the developmental trial with water temperature at a relatively constant 25°C, length increased from 5 mm notochord length (4 dph) to 8.7 mm standard length (45 dph), with significant milestones occurring at 4 dph (swim bladder inflation), 16 dph (flexion), and 23 dph (hypural plate formation). Conclusion: These data provide basic culture information for the Metallic Shiner while also providing a place of reference to begin investigating culture protocols for related species, including species of conservation concern. Ornamental fish aquarium globally is considered a key sector of aquaculture and represents a significant portion of the pet industry. Between June 2022 and February 2023, a total of 229 goldfish were examined to investigate the histopathological lesions associated with the parasitic fauna (Carassius auratus) collected from Elsaieda Aisha market in Cairo governorate, Egypt and some pet shops in Beni-suef and Elfayoum governorates. The overall prevalence of parasitic infections was 47.2 %. The isolated parasites include protozoan parasites (Trichodina spp., Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, Chilodonella sp. and Icthyoboda necator), monogeneans (Dactylogyrus sp. and Gyrodactylus sp.), Encysted meta cercaria of Centrocestus formosanus, crustaceans ( Lernaea sp. and Argulus sp.) and one nematode Capillariasp. with incidence rates 27.9%, 15.3%, 2.6%, 12.7% and 0.4% respectively. Gross examinations of the affected fish were varied and appeared as hemorrhage on the body' with excessive mucus production, ulceration, white-colored worm-like copepods protruding on different parts of the body and pale anemic or congested gills. Histopathological changes included vacuolation and necrosis of epidermal cells and hyperplasia and fusion of secondary gill lamellae. In addition to leucocytic cell infiltrations mainly lymphocytes and macrophages, hyperplasia of gill cartilage and parasitic cysts surrounded by several layers of fibroblast cells were noticed. In conclusion, the prevalence rate of parasite infection in goldfish is relatively high as well as the pathological findings induced by these parasites and might negatively affect the proper function of the skin and gills of the host. Simple Summary: Marine aquarium keeping is a popular hobby that fuels a global industry that still heavily relies on the sourcing of wild organisms, mostly from tropical coral reefs. The European Union (EU) is one of the largest import markets for marine ornamental fish. Despite being mandatory and already fully digital, the record-keeping of what species are imported in what numbers from which exporting countries remains blurry. The present work presents curated and consolidated data reporting the value, the exporting and importing countries, and the number of specimens, species, and families of marine ornamental fish imported to the EU between 2014 and 2021. A 24-million-euro annual trade value was recorded, and 26 million specimens were imported from more than 60 countries (mostly Indonesia, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka). A watchlist is presented to provide guidance to stakeholders on which marine ornamental fish species being traded most likely require closer monitoring due to their potential impact through trade. The European TRAde Control and Expert System (TRACES) requires some minor tunning to enable authorities to easily monitor the imports of marine ornamental fish into the EU, thus allowing an unprecedented insight into this and other trade activities targeting wildlife. Wild-caught fish from coral reefs, one of the most threatened ecosystems on the planet, continue to supply the marine aquarium trade. Despite customs and veterinary checks during imports, comprehensive data on this global industry remain scarce. This study provides consolidated data on the largest import market by value, the European Union (EU): a 24-million-euro annual trade value, detailing the main exporting and importing countries, as well as the species and families of the 26 million specimens imported between 2014 and 2021. A watchlist alert system based on the number of specimens traded, import trends, and vulnerability index according to FishBase and the IUCN Red List conservation status is presented, providing key information on which species should require closer scrutiny by authorities. While the European TRAde Control and Expert System (TRACES) electronically monitors the movement of live animals to respond quickly to biosecurity risks, one-third of marine ornamental fish imported lack species-level information. The guppy, Poecilia reticulata, is one of the most common cultured ornamental fish species, and a popular pet fish highly desired by hobbyists worldwide due to its availability of many brilliantly coloured fish of many varieties. The susceptibility of guppies to diseases presents a remarkable concern for both breeders and hobbyists. In this study, we report the emergence of disease in fancy guppies caused by a previously uncharacterized virus in the USA. This virus was isolated from moribund guppies in two separate outbreaks in California and Alabama, from December 2021 to June 2023. The infected guppies presented with acute morbidity and mortality shortly after shipping, displaying nonspecific clinical signs and gross changes including lethargy, anorexia, swimming at the water surface, gill pallor, mild to moderate coelomic distension and occasional skin lesions including protruding scales, skin ulcers and hyperaemia. Histological changes in affected fish were mild and nonspecific; however, liver and testes from moribund fish were positive for Tilapia lake virus (TiLV), the single described member in the family Amnoonviridae, using immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization, although the latter was weak. A virus was successfully recovered following tissue inoculation on epithelioma papulosum cyprini and snakehead fish cell lines. Whole genome sequencing and phylogenetic analyses revealed nucleotide and amino acid homologies from 78.3%–91.2%, and 78.2%–97.7%, respectively, when comparing the guppy virus genomes to TiLV isolates. Based on the criteria outlined herein, we propose the classification of this new virus, fancy tailed guppy virus (FTGV), as a member of the family Amnoonviridae, with the name Tilapinevirus poikilos (from the Greek 'poikilos', meaning of many colours; various sorts, akin to 'poecilia'). Kenya is a major player in the global ornamental trade, exporting substantial quantities of ornamental fish to the global market. The sector plays an important role in the country's economy through foreign exchange. However, the country's ornamental fish industry has not fully developed to generate more economic benefits. This paper sought to identify the existing opportunities for enhancing the production and trade of ornamental fish in the country. The findings reveal that there are opportunities for collection of native freshwater ornamental fish species from the vast freshwater resources in the country; for the culture of marine ornamental fish; for public aquariums as centres of recreation, conservation, research and education; and for employment and development of support industries. The findings also show that there are international legislations and national policies that create an enabling environment for the growth of the industry. To unlock the full potential of the industry, training and research, investment and infrastructure development, quality assurance, collaboration and networking, and environmental sustainability strategies need to be put in place. An understanding of the mechanistic drivers of animal‐microbial symbiosis and associations generally requires experiments that manipulate specific symbionts or microbial communities. As part of an ongoing study of the mechanisms that drive microbial communities in coral reef fishes, and specifically the role of cleanerfish in microbial transmission, we tested the effects of the commonly used antibiotics Enrofloxacin and Nitrofurazone on the skin microbiome of three ornamental reef fish species: the four‐eyed butterflyfish, Chaetodon capistratus (Chaetodontidae), the cleanerfish neon goby Elacatinus oceanops (Gobiidae) and the beaugregory damselfish Stegastes leucostictus (Pomacentridae). Our main aim was to characterize dysbiosis prompted by the delivery of the two antibiotics and understand whether both could be used to establish good starting points for microbial transmission experiments. We bathed the fish in antibiotic (or no exposure in the controls), sampled the skin microbiota via swabbing at zero (before treatment) and 3 and 7 days during the treatments, and examined the microbial community using a 16S rRNA gene sequencing approach. Nitrofurazone reduced skin‐associated microbial diversity in all species, whereas the same effect for Enrofloxacin was only seen in S. leucostictus. Although each antibiotic had its own, unique impact in microbial community, all treatments showed positive and negative shifts in the most abundant microbial taxa over time. Moreover, soon after the delivery of both antibiotics, increases in the abundance of opportunistic bacteria or potential pathogens, such as Alteromonas and Vibrio, were observed. Although both antibiotics are effective, Nitrofurazone more successfully reduces microbial diversity and therefore may be more ideal for experiments seeking to disrupt fish microbiomes. Evidence from "pet-friendly" workplaces highlights potential benefits associated with taking companion animals to work, including reduced stress among employees. Ornamental fishes carry a much lower risk than other companion animals and may be a suitable alternative in situations where other animals would introduce too great a risk (e.g., allergy, accidental injury). The aim of this study was to investigate whether watching an aquarium during the working day influenced employee wellbeing through the reduction of stress and improvements in stress-related outcomes. An embedded mixed-methods study was conducted, comprising two within-subjects trials (Trials A and B) and a qualitative follow-up. Participants were university employees and research students who participated during their working day. In Trial A (n = 30), the immediate effects of watching live fishes on mood, physiological stress, and cognitive performance were compared with the effects of watching a fish video or resting quietly. Although some outcomes improved from pre- to post-activity, there was no evidence that watching fishes (live or video) had greater effects than resting quietly. In Trial B (n = 27), the effects of repeatedly engaging in the same three activities over several weeks were examined. Watching fish videos was associated with improvements in "high pleasure-low arousal" and overall job-related affective wellbeing, but no further effects of condition were found. Qualitative follow-up data collected from a subset of participants from the experimental trials (n = 13) indicated that all three activities may be beneficial as leaving their desks provided detachment from work for a short period. Qualitative data suggested that live fishes were perceived as more engaging, but this did not translate to quantitative findings. Locating fish aquaria within offices (rather than a separate workplace location) may promote wellbeing by encouraging "microbreaks"; further research is needed to investigate this hypothesis. We present a novel learning method using a two-stream network to predict cloth deformation for skeleton-based characters. The characters processed in our approach are not limited to humans, and can be other targets with skeleton-based representations such as fish or pets. We use a novel network architecture which consists of skeleton-based and mesh-based residual networks to learn the coarse features and wrinkle features forming the overall residual from the template cloth mesh. Our network may be used to predict the deformation for loose or tight-fitting clothing. The memory footprint of our network is low, thereby resulting in reduced computational requirements. In practice, a prediction for a single cloth mesh for a skeleton-based character takes about 7 ms on an nVidia GeForce RTX 3090 GPU. Antibiotics are routinely added to ornamental fish tanks for treating bacterial infection or as a prophylactic measure. However, the overuse or subtherapeutical application of antibiotics could potentially facilitate the selection of antibiotic resistance in bacteria, yet no studies have investigated antibiotic use in the retail ornamental fish sector and its impact on microbial communities. The present study analyzed the concentrations of twenty antibiotics in the carriage water (which also originates from fish tanks in retail shops) collected monthly from ten local ornamental fish shops over a duration of three months. The antibiotic concentrations were correlated with the sequenced microbial community composition, and the risk of resistance selection in bacteria was assessed. Results revealed that the detected concentrations of tetracyclines were the highest among samples, followed by fluoroquinolones and macrolides. The concentrations of oxytetracycline (44.3 to 2,262,064.2 ng L−1) detected across three months demonstrated a high risk for resistance selection at most of the sampled shops. Zoonotic pathogens (species of Rhodococcus, Legionella, and Citrobacter) were positively correlated with the concentrations of oxytetracycline, tetracycline, chlortetracycline, and enrofloxacin. This suggests that antibiotic use in retail shops may increase the likelihood of selecting for zoonotic pathogens. These findings shed light on the potential for ornamental fish retail shops to create a favorable environment for the selection of pathogens with antibiotics, thereby highlighting the urgent need for enhanced antibiotic stewardship within the industry. Guppy fish (Poecilia reticulata) is an ornamental fish in great demand because of its small size and beautiful color. The color of ornamental fish will generally fade due to a lack of carotenoids in their feed. This study aimed to determine the effect of giving Tubifex sp. in commercial feed to increase the color intensity of guppy fish and the best dose of Tubifex sp. The test fish used were male guppy fish strain HB Red. This study used a completely randomized design (CRD) method with five treatments and three replications, that is, commercial feed with the addition of Tubifex sp. with doses of 0% (P1), 2% (P2), 4% (P3), 6% (P4), and 8% (P5). The parameters observed were color intensity (chroma value), survival, and water quality. The addition of Tubifex sp. in commercial feed gave the effect with the highest yield on P5 at a dose of 8%, with an increase in color intensity (chroma value) of 4,21±0,25d. At P1, it gave an increase of 1,19±0,02a, P2 was 1,34±0,04a, P3 was 1,81±0,21b, and P4 was 2,88±0,18c. So, the best treatment is P5 (8%). Survival showed the results were not significantly different, that is, 100%. Water quality is included in the tolerance limit of fish with the results of temperature 26,6 - 27,4°C, pH 7,4 - 7,9, and DO 6,2 - 7,7 mg/L. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the global pet market, fish are the number one selling pets in the world. Considering a market that moves billions of dollars annually and where the body color of these animals is one of the main factors that attracts consumers to this niche, it is important to understand the pigmentation process and what can influence the metabolism of these animals, which directly affects their color. This understanding will allow for the appropriate manipulation of diets without compromising animal welfare, ultimately resulting in more attractive specimens for the market. Biological pigments, namely melanin, carotenoids, pteridine, and purines, are not only responsible for the color of fish, but also influence health, disease resistance, wellbeing, social interaction, growth, and reproduction. Providing these pigments in the diet is critical because some are not biosynthesized by fish. For example, pheomelanin and carotenoids are not synthesized by fish, whereas compounds such as pteridine, eumelanin, and purines are synthesized. During the synthesis phase, certain amino acids, especially phenylalanine, play a key role in the metabolic pathways. Thus, this work describes the role of phenylalanine in the metabolic pathways of these pigments, characterizes the types of pigments, highlights their importance for animals, and explains the mechanisms of action and control involved in the pigmentation process. Ichthyophthirius multifiliis , the causative agent of white spot disease, is a ciliated protozoan parasite that infects freshwater fish and induces high mortality. Outbreaks occur both in natural and production sites. The aim of the present study was to describe the lesions caused by chronic infection by I. multifiliis in goldfish (Carassius auratus) from an ornamental fish farm, highlighting important ultrastructural aspects of this protozoan. Damaged skin and gills, collected from fish with white or ulcerative skin lesions, were routinely processed for histological analysis and transmission electron microscopy. The parasitic forms present in the skin were associated with an inflammatory infiltrate consisting of macrophages, lymphocytes and other polymorphonuclear cells. The lesions associated with the presence of the parasite were organized in the form of granulomas, with macrophages in the layers closest to the parasites. A trophont-thickened membrane and induction of granulomatous inflammation were identified in this study as mechanisms for evasion of the immune response. We concluded that the presence of I. multifiliis trophonts resulted in the formation of granulomatous inflammation, whether associated or not with pathogen lysis, suggesting that the parasite can use an inflammatory response to evade the immune response. Members of the genus Erysipelothrix are emergent pathogens of cultured eels, as well as several characid and cyprinid species. Since 2013, E. rhusiopathiae has been reported from diseased barramundi (Lates calcarifer) cultured in North America; we recovered 8 E. rhusiopathiae isolates from diseased fish during different outbreaks from the same farm. The E. rhusiopathiae isolates from barramundi were compared phenotypically and genetically to E. piscisicarius isolates characterized from ornamental fish and E. rhusiopathiae recovered from aquatic and terrestrial animals. All barramundi isolates were PCR-positive for the surface protective antigen type B (spaB) gene, and shared ≥ 99.7% sequence similarity among concatenated multilocus sequence analysis gene sequences, indicating a high degree of genetic homogeneity. These isolates were > 99% similar to other spaB- positive isolates from marine invertebrates and marine mammals, consistent with findings for other spa types. The spaA and spaB isolates shared < 98% similarity, as well as < 90% similarity with spaC- positive E. piscisicarius. Similar clonality among the spaB isolates was observed using repetitive element palindromic PCR. In experimental intracoelomic injection challenges conducted to fulfill Koch postulates, 67% of exposed tiger barbs (Puntigrus tetrazona) died within 14 d of challenge. Our study supports previous work citing the genetic variability of Erysipelothrix spp. spa types and the emergence of members of the genus Erysipelothrix as nascent fish pathogens. Purpose: Aplocheilus dayi (Ceylon Killifish) is a freshwater fish endemic to Sri Lanka, but its conservation has not received much attention as uncontrolled fishing for ornamental purposes and many other human activities have posed significant threats to its survival. Therefore, this study aimed to provide baseline information on the development of a captive breeding system and to study the embryonic and larval development of A. dayi. Research Method: Matured A. dayi fish were acclimatised for two weeks prior to the experiments. A suitable breeding substrate to facilitate successful spawning was identified using two substrates; spawning mop, and sand while no substrate was used as the control. The subsequent breeding experiment (to find the best sex ratio) was performed using different sex combinations (Male: female 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, and 2:4). Subsequently, eggs were collected and analysed for fertility, hatchability, and embryonic development studies. Findings: Spawning mop seemed to be the most preferred spawning substrate for A. dayi. Egg parameters, including fertilisation rate and hatchability, were not significant upon the sex ratios; however, the ratio between male: and female (1:2) had the highest significance (p<0.05) in egg production (4 eggs/day). Moreover, we found that A. dayi eggs showed a lengthy incubation period (11 - 13 days at 25±1 °C), indicating their dormancy nature to bypass the hostile conditions before being hatched. Research Limitations: The breeding pattern under captivity needs to be examined over an extended period in different experimental settings, such as using other culture techniques with varying density ratios. Captive fish populations, such as those encompassing aquarium and pet fish, offer significant economic value and are integral to conservation, research, and education. However, these ornamental fish exhibit a reduced ability to protect their ocular surfaces, and our understanding of the ocular diseases that affect them remains limited. Although corneal neoplasms in carp are uncommon, identifying their distinct characteristics is crucial in selecting appropriate therapeutic interventions that aim to preserve vision, prevent the ocular loss, and ultimately ensure the survival of the affected fish. This study provides clinical and histopathological details of various proliferative corneal masses in Cyprininae species, including five koi (Cyprinus carpio) and four goldfish (Carassius auratus). It discusses a spectrum of neoplasms, including soft tissue sarcoma, spindle cell sarcoma, chromatophoroma, and papilloma, in addition to conditions like exuberant granulation tissue and proliferative carp pox. The color of ornamental fish is crucial in determining their value, and it is always compromised when reared in captivity. This study aimed to examine the effects of dietary carotenoids from Artemia enriched with four microalgae on growth, survival, and carotenoid accumulation in mandarinfish, Synchiropus splendidus. Artemia nauplii were enriched with one of the following microalgae: Tetraselmis gracilis, Isochrysis galbana, Nannochloropsis oculata and Dunaliella salina. Subsequently, the enriched Artemia nauplii were fed to 60 days old mandarinfish for a period of 60 days. At the end of the feeding period, survival was 100% for all dietary treatments. The growth performance varied significantly (p<0.05) for the various diets. The highest weight gain, length gain and specific growth rate (SGR) were found in the mandarinfish fed with the diet enriched with T. gracilis (weight gain = 0.80±0.58 g; length gain = 0.27±0.02 cm; SGR = 2.98±0.03% day-1). The highest total carotenoid content of the mandarinfish was observed in the fish fed with Artemia enriched with T. gracilis and I. galbana at 1.79±0.32 mg·g-1. The results showed that mandarinfish accumulated the highest amount of beta-carotene when fed with Artemia enriched with T. gracilis (0.39 μg×g-1of wet weight). Following a request from the European Commission, EFSA was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the safety and efficacy of 6‐phytase (Quantum® Blue) as a zootechnical feed additive for fin fish. The additive is authorised for use in poultry and pigs. The additive is available in solid and liquid forms, and the 6‐phytase contained in the product is produced by fermentation with a genetically modified strain of Trichoderma reesei. The Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) concluded that the genetic modification of the production strain does not give rise to safety concerns; viable cells of the production strain and its DNA were not detected in the final products. The FEEDAP Panel concluded that, based on the data available, the additive tested is safe for fin fish at the highest recommended level of 2500 phytase activity unit (FTU)/kg complete feed. The Panel concluded that Quantum® Blue is not an irritant to skin and eyes nor a skin sensitiser. Owing to the proteinaceous nature of the active substance, 6‐phytase (Quantum® Blue) is considered a respiratory sensitiser. The use of Quantum® Blue as a feed additive is considered safe for the environment. The additive is considered to be efficacious as a zootechnical additive for salmonids and ornamental fish at 500 FTU/kg complete feed and other fin fish at 2500 FTU/kg complete feed. This communication deals with seasonal variation of protozoans of edible ornamental fishes of West Bengal, India. During this survey, 1566 edible ornamental fishes were collected from different fish farms, ponds, and nearby markets of several district of West Bengal namely, Nadia, South 24 Parganas, Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, Birbhum, Purba Barddhaman, and Paschim Barddhaman from November 2019 to December 2022. Three ciliate ectoparasites belonging to the genera Trichodina, Trichodinella, and Tripartiella and three myxozoan parasites belonging to the genera Myxobolus, Thelohanellus, and Kudoa have been identified from edible ornamental fish, namely, Anabas testudineus, Bloch, 1792. Our study shows ciliate parasites have a higher rate of infection than myxozoan parasites. The highest prevalence of ectoparasitic infection has been reported during the post-monsoon season, i.e., from November to February, followed by monsoon season while lowest prevalence has been observed during pre-monsoon season, i.e., March to June, implying that environmental variables play a role in the spread of infections. The identification of these ciliates and myxozoans parasites was done by a widely used staining technique, along with an ultrastructural study of the myxozoan parasites using scanning electron microscopy. The current work also reveals the histopathological alterations in the gill and fin of Anabas testudineus, after infection with myxozoan parasites along with an ultrastructural study using scanning electron microscopy, which has not been previously studied. This review first presents the origin and species of wild discus fish (Symphysodon spp.), as well as discus propagation and domestication. The phenotypic characteristics, with particular emphasis on primary and secondary colors, stress bars, stripes and spots, eye features, the "D" area, markings and rims, body and fin shapes, forehead types, and gill plates, are described. The domesticated discus varieties are then classified on the basis of their primary base color and distinct phenotypic characteristics. Major malformation features that affect the value of the discus are described. These details are of fundamental importance in helping aquaculturists, discus hobbyists, and researchers to understand the general background characteristics, as well as to identify common and new discus varieties based on their phenotypic appearance. The review concludes with recommendations for a few critical research topics that could be carried out in the near future to benefit understanding of this important ornamental fish species for the aquaculture industry, with a focus on the incorporation of transcriptomic and genomic tools that allow researchers to understand and predict putative functional genes and pathways at the molecular level. Background: Exotic and ornamental fish are highly popular companion animals resulting in a significant transcontinental trade of fish, invertebrates and aquatic plants. A major issue is the diseases associated with these organisms, as they have a major impact on health of the fish in both public and private household aquaria. A secondary issue is the trade with these products, which potentially may expand the distribution area and spread a range of diseases to new habitats. Results: We here describe how Poecilia reticulata (guppy), produced in a private household aquarium, were invaded by cercariae of an exotic trematode released by imported Melanoides tuberculata snails. The fish presented with severe clinical signs (tremor, flashing, scraping of body against objects). A standard parasitological examination and morphometric identification showed scale pocket infections with a digenean trematode species within the genus Transversotrema. Molecular identification by PCR, sequencing and phylogenetic analyses of a 2646 bp sequence encoding ribosomal RNA (partial 18 S, ITS1, 5.8 S, ITS2, partial 28 S) was performed. The 1107 bp sequence of mitochondrial DNA (cox1) showed that the parasite differed from previously described Transversotrema species in M. tuberculata. Morphometrics of adult and larval specimens of this isolate also differed from previously described freshwater species within the genus. The new species was described and is named after Copenhagen, for its geographic origin. Conclusions: The genus Transversotrema comprises a range of species, adapted to a microhabitat in scalepockets of teleosts. A combination of morphological and molecular characterization techniques has been shown to provide a good differentiation between species. The fish were not purchased from a pet shop but produced in the home aquarium. This indicated that an infection pressure existed in the aquarium, where the source of infection was found to be exotic intermediate host snails M. tuberculata, which originally were imported and purchased from a pet shop. The hazardous effect of the pesticide chlorpyrifos and its detoxification in selected organs of common carp (Cyprinus rubrofuscus L.) fed diets supplemented with probiotics was investigated. For the toxicity test, C. rubrofuscus weighing 8.50±1.20g were exposed to various concentrations of chlorpyrifos (1ppm, 1.5ppm, 2ppm, 2.5ppm, 3ppm, 3.5ppm and 4ppm) with ten fishes for each concentration and the 42-hour LC50 value was determined as 2.5ppm. Further, to assess the effect of chlorpyrifos, experimental fishes were fed diets containing concentrations of 10%, 20%, 40% and 60% of the 42-hour LC50 (0.25 ppm, 0.5ppm, 1ppm and 1.5ppm) incorporated feed for a period of 21 days in 20 L glass tanks. A control group was also maintained and fed a normal diet devoid of chlorpyrifos. During the experimentation, fishes were fed control and experimental diets at 10% of body weight twice a day, with 50% water exchange made. After the experimentation, two fishes from each experiment, including the control group were taken out and used for gut toxicity study through histopathological analysis. Then, the remaining experimental fishes were reefed with probiotic-supplemented diets and allowed to grow for two weeks to assess the detoxification potential of probiotics. During this refeeding experiment, probiotic-supplemented feed (0.25g/100g) was offered at 10% of body weight. After refeeding, histopathology of the gut was studied for both control and experimental fishes, revealing the recovery process of damaged gut tissues. The present investigation evidenced that probiotic bacteria can alleviate the toxification caused by the pesticide chlorpyrifos, and it was found to be dependent on the density of probiotic bacteria used. Objective: The White‐barred Goby Amblygobius phalaena is a popular ornamental fish in the marine aquarium market. To achieve successful commercial production, efficient larval rearing techniques are crucial. Previous studies have achieved successful cultivation of White‐barred Goby larvae by using a combination of three live feed organisms—the ciliate Euplotes sp., the rotifer Brachionus rotundiformis, and the copepod Apocyclops royi nauplii—during the first feeding stage. However, the specific contributions of these live feed organisms to larval survival and growth remain unclear. Moreover, the optimal feeding density for the critical initial live feed organism has not been determined experimentally. In this study, we aimed to enhance the larviculture protocol for White‐barred Goby by introducing Portuguese oyster Crassostrea angulata trochophores and by addressing these knowledge gaps. Methods: Larvae were initially cultured through individual and combined feeding with four live feed organisms: Euplotes sp., Portuguese oyster trochophores, B. rotundiformis, and A. royi nauplii. The objective was to identify the optimal initial live feed organism during the first feeding stage by assessing the survival and growth performance of larvae. Subsequently, using this optimal live feed organism, larvae were cultured at four feeding densities (2, 5, 10, and 20 individuals/mL). Through evaluating feeding incidence, feeding intensity, survival, and growth performance, the aim was to determine the optimal feeding density for the selected live prey. Result: Our experiments revealed that White‐barred Goby larvae could consume both oyster trochophores and Euplotes sp. during the first feeding stage. However, larvae exhibited superior survival and growth performance when fed oyster trochophores. The optimal feeding density of oyster trochophores was determined to be 10 individuals/mL, while a feeding density as high as 20 individuals/mL resulted in decreased larval feeding incidence. Conclusion: These findings have significant implications for enhancing larval production programs for marine ornamental gobies and promoting their sustainable commercialization. Aquaculture's role in addressing food security has grown, with a spotlight on Asian carp species. Polyculture, i.e. cultivating multiple fish species in a single system, is being increasingly adopted for its resource efficiency and economic benefits. This practice for Asian fish for food and ornamental purposes is gaining traction in Europe despite their invasive potential. Rising temperatures due to climate change offer an opportunity for thermophilic Asian carps (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix and Aristichthys nobilis). Using GIS modeling (Maxent), we identified the possible settlement of Asian carp in Northern Europe amidst climate change. We analyzed carp global distribution centers, assessed the potential carp spread in Europe, and evaluated their potential suitability for polyculture systems. By 2050, H. molitrix may extend its range to 58–62° N latitude, with a potential 1.7-fold habitat increase, while A. nobilis, which are more heat-tolerant, may move north to 52–58° N latitude, with a 1.3-fold potential increase. Despite the slight ecological differences in their native habitats, niche modeling indicates that these carp can occupy similar niches in Europe (proven statistically). The eventuality of using Asian species for polyculture in Europe presents both opportunities and challenges in the face of a changing climate as long as invasion risks are prevented. Green terror cichlid (Aequidens rivulatus) is a popular tropical freshwater ornamental fish. In 2021, an unknown disease was observed in cultured A. rivulatus in Tianjin, China, with a cumulative mortality rate of 25% within 7 days of onset. The main clinical signs were scale loss, skin ulceration, and slight bleeding. Histopathological observation revealed obvious damage to the liver, spleen, and kidney of diseased fish. In addition, abundant granulomas were observed in the spleen and head kidney of the diseased fish. To define the potential pathogens from A. rivulatus, bacteria were isolated from the visceral tissue of diseased fish with conventional methods. An artificial infection experiment was carried out to prove the pathogenicity of the isolated bacteria. The strains HG-2021-1 and HG-2021-3 were isolated from diseased fish and identified as being responsible for the disease. They were identified as Streptococcus iniae based on physiological and biochemical tests, lctO gene detection, and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. According to the result of multilocus sequence typing (MLST), HG-2021-1 and HG-2021-3 belong to different genotypes of S. iniae. Furthermore, they were found to contain the virulence genes pgmA, scpI, cpsD, and pdi, and the median lethal dose (LD50) for A. rivulatus was 1.8 × 106 Colony-Forming Units (CFU)/mL and 6.6 × 106 CFU/mL, respectively. Transgenic ornamental fish that fluoresce are becoming popular in the aquarium trade worldwide. Some transgenic zebrafish (TZF) records in natural water bodies have been published, but there are no data on their biological attributes in the new areas. This study aimed to evaluate the distribution, trophic ecology, and reproductive condition of the non-native TZF in headwater creeks located in the largest Brazilian ornamental aquaculture center. Insect fragments – identified as chitinous material in the 'false stomach'- and aquatic insects were the most consumed item. TZF adults were found in breeding conditions during almost all sampling periods. The Gonadosomatic Index of females and males showed peaks during the rainy season and matched with the rising water levels. Breeding females and males were found at small body sizes, indicating early maturation, and these transgenic females produced a moderate amount of small oocytes. Sex-ratio assessment showed that females and males had the same frequencies in one site, while females were significantly more frequent than males at another location. Management recommendations, such as utilization of best management practices (e.g. screens on outlets), not using unapproved genetically modified organisms in aquaculture, and awareness with fish farmers about transgenic animals, are suggested to avoid new introductions. Background: The invasion success of introduced freshwater fishes is influenced by many factors, including ecological, species, and socioeconomic characteristics. Most studies that document the importance of these characteristics are conducted at local scales and/or focus on a single step of the invasion process. In this study, we aim to determine the species characteristics, ecological characteristics, and socioeconomic characteristics of non-native freshwater fish invasions. Our assessment was done at the global scale and considers all three steps of the invasion (i.e., introduction, establishment, and impact). For this purpose, we applied generalized linear models to 20 variables collected for 307 non-native species and modeled them as a function of ecological characteristics (i.e., environmental features), species traits (i.e., functional and morphological), and socioeconomic characteristics (i.e., human use and introduction pathways). We considered the number of countries in which each species was introduced, established, or had ecological impacts as a proxy of invasion step success. We also explored the specifics of species introduced through the aquaculture and the ornamental fish trade pathways. Results: We found that non-native freshwater fishes with broad diets, high parental care, and multiple introduction pathways are the most widely introduced and established worldwide. The number of countries with impacts reported was best explained by the type of introduction pathway (i.e., aquaculture or fisheries). Moreover, among non-native species introduced through aquaculture, those belonging to Cypriniformes and having broad diets were the most widely introduced and established species. In contrast, the species introduced through the ornamental fish trade pathway belonged to various taxonomic orders but were mainly native to tropical regions. Conclusions: Considering several types of factors is important when analyzing the invasion success of freshwater fish and disentangling the different invasion steps.
