This article presents findings from a research project that aimed to replace physical books with an adaptive learning platform, Area9 Rhapsode™, for nursing students' class preparation. As the project expanded, it became evident that students employed diverse preparation practices, prompting an investigation into their preparation habits. This is done through the following research questions: (1) how do students feel about class preparation? (2) what learning resources do students choose? (3) when and where do they prepare for class? This is conducted through a mixed methods design that draws on empirical data from interviews, mobile ethnography, surveys, and log data. The results highlight the wide range of resources students utilise, including digital and analogue tools, the various temporal patterns of preparation, and students' spectrum of feelings in their preparation. The findings suggest the importance of understanding individual students' preparation habits to facilitate targeted teaching approaches that cater to diverse learning needs. The article contributes to the existing literature on study habits and strategies, emphasising the need for educators to recognise and adapt to students' unique preparation behaviours in order to enhance their academic success.

International students are an important component of the host country and universities bringing economic, social, and community contributions. International students are the most vulnerable students with challenges related to academic expectations, language proficiency, and socio-cultural integration. This study explores the challenges of international students in a Western Australian School of Nursing and Midwifery. An exploratory questionnaire (n=10), three focus groups (n=15) and a quality improvement survey (n=80) informed this study. Four themes emerged: stress in the first weeks, incorrect and/or late enrolments, lack of guidance and support, and system navigation nightmares. Other issues included: accommodation, culture shock, financial concerns, information needs, and peer support. These findings led to the instigation of an international academic coordinator role as a single point of contact and increasing resources within the university faculty provided additional support to the international students.

The shortage of nurses is a global crisis, particularly in remote and rural communities. Contributory factors are retirements, resignations, recent increased deaths due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the reduced production of nurses because of high attrition rates. This article's purpose was to investigate the provision of student support in the nursing education institution (NEI) of the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) province in South Africa and come up with a model to improve completion rates. The researchers intentionally selected three KZN campuses based on their demographical location and programme offerings for the study. For data collection through in-depth interviews, the study adopted a case study design and employed a qualitative explorative approach, purposely sampling the NEI's senior academic staff. Strauss and Corbin's stages of coding were used to conduct the data analysis. The findings suggest comprehensive orientation and academic support as strong measures applied by the NEI to provide student support services and highlighted a need to improve enabling resources. Psychosocial support was predominantly provided by the hospital, which implied a lack of on-site comprehensive support. A necessity for developing a comprehensive student support model for the NEI emerged from the study. The model is expected to enhance the support and, in turn, increase completion rates.

This article details a 'puzzling' teaching and learning method to engage undergraduate nursing (BSN) and exercise sciences (BSES) students in physiology or medicine Nobel Prize-winning discoveries, while reviewing course material through the "Puzzling Physiology and Nobel Laureates" (PPNL) game. The qualitative evaluations of 117 undergraduate BSN and BSES students revealed that 95% and 96%, respectively, agreed the game provided an opportunity to utilize critical thinking and problem-solving skillsets. Moreover, 96% of the 117 anonymous student respondents voted on increasing the number of PPNL game sessions per semester, and 94% agreeing the gamified learning strategy should be offered in subsequent classes as well. Interestingly, nearly 90% agreed that the learning experience was 'fun', and that it increased awareness of physiology and/or medicine discoveries. The style of the "Puzzling Physiology and Nobel Laureates" game lends to its reproducibility in a wide array of physiology courses for both majors and nonmajors.

In the United States, there is a demand for registered nurses. To be admitted into the nursing program, students need to complete prerequisite courses such as human anatomy and physiology. Many students find human anatomy and physiology challenging due to the nature of the content. Poor performance in human anatomy and physiology can preclude a student from enrolling in the nursing program. Professors can support students in their learning activities with strategies that can have a positive impact on learning and improve learner outcomes. The objectives of this study are to use consistent formative assessments such as pre-course assessment, course syllabus quiz, reading assignments (pre-learning), in-class activities (during learning), and post-learning activities to engage students in a human anatomy and physiology course. It is important to share these strategies for engaging students with other educators of allied health students. Data were collected on students' performance on pre-course assessment, course syllabus quiz, pre-learning, during learning, and post-learning activities (n=9). Pre-course assessment, course syllabus quiz, and post-learning quizzes were completed on Moodle. Pre-learning reading assignments were completed using McGraw Hill Connect embedded within Moodle. During learning and post-learning activities were completed in the classroom. The mean data for different forms of formative assessment are pre-course assessment (67.8%), course syllabus quiz (84.4%), pre-learning reading assignments (99%), during learning activities (94.2%), and post-learning activities (78.8%). The data show that consistent formative assessments can be used to engage students in active learning, help them prepare for summative assessments, and impact knowledge with positive learner outcomes.

The objective of the research is to explore the consistency of specialized nursing competency models of nursing students. The participants in this research are 165 Year 4 nursing students at Boromarajonani College of Nursing, Chakriraj, Thailand. The data was collected using a questionnaire consisting of 45 questions, answered with the use of a 5-level scale. The questionnaire was evaluated by three experts, and the questionnaire's accuracy ratings ranged from 0.70 to 1.00. The internal reliability of the questionnaire was measured using Cronbach's alpha coefficient, resulting in values of 0.763 for educational excellence, 0.757 for socio-economic factors, 0.806 for lifestyle, and 0.814 for personal factors. The study's findings showed that competency. 1) Education throughout nursing student training. 2) The socio-economic context. 3) Habits pertinent to everyday existence. 4) Attitude towards the nursing profession. 5) GPAx represents the grade point average. 6) OSCE refers to the objective structured clinical examination. The confirmatory factor analysis of specialized nursing aptitude is consistent with the empirical data, Chi-Square = 14.226; df = 8; Relative Chi-Square = 1.778; p-value = 0.076; GFI = 0.974; NFI = 0.943; TLI = 0.951; CFI = 0.974; RMSEA = 0.069; RMR = 0.113. Each element has a standard element weight value of between 0.010 and 0.817, with a standardized weight value ranging from 0.010 to 0.817.

The qualitative research explored the perceptions toward evidence-based practice competency of nursing students in caring for older adults. Nine participants met the criteria using purposive sampling and were invited to join in the study of evidence-based practice experiences in nursing students. The data was analyzed using thematic analysis. Three main themes emerged: 1) Knowledge enhancing evidence-based practice with three sub-themes: implementing the nursing process, searching for trustworthy information, and selecting appropriate guidelines; 2) Skills driving evidence-based practice with three sub-themes including nursing practice skills, critical thinking skills, and language skills; and 3) Attitude fostering evidence-based practice with two sub-themes as well as increasing the quality of care for older adults and improving the nursing profession. Therefore, the following study should test component factors of evidence-based geriatric nursing competencies for nursing students, leading to developing the competency of nursing students in care for older adults in the future.

Social justice and health equity are foundational to community health nursing. Arts-based pedagogy has learning and reflexive value for community and population health education within nursing and health professions curricula. Art has been increasingly used in health care and in promoting health, including in nursing education. However, research has not explored the use of arts to teach community health nursing students about social justice. The objective of this study was to understand how the inclusion of a collaborative artistic process relates to the understanding of social justice issues for second-year baccalaureate nursing students enrolled in a community health nursing course. Visual art and symbolic components were added to an existing group concept mapping assignment of community health nursing interventions from a social justice approach. We engaged in analysis within interpretive phenomenological inquiry to understand and share students' experiences with constructing and giving meaning to symbols and art pieces, internalizing the concept of social justice, and collaborating with group members. Students used symbols and visual representation to explore social justice and health. Students' narrative reflections encompassed experiences finding personal power, engaging in empathy, reflecting on their own position and privilege, and benefitting from non-traditional forms of learning. Students recounted group processes that deepened their understanding of concepts, increased their appreciation of the need for advocacy, and enabled creative freedom in the context of collective vision. The addition of a collaborative creative, artistic process enhanced students' learning about social justice and health.

The fourth industrial revolution has brought about plenty of changes in the educational landscape. As a result, the implementation of online education is now a necessity for any higher education institution that seeks recognition in the 21st century. Furthermore, online education has become a well-established global practice that enables active, individual, and flexible learning. While online education is growing at a tremendous rate in higher education, in South Africa, its use in Nursing Education is a relatively new phenomenon. This explorative, descriptive, qualitative research design paper aimed to report the results of a whole study whose purpose was to explore and describe the perceptions nurse educators have towards online education at the Nursing Education Institution in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Three themes emerged: the perceived advantages of online education, the perceived disadvantages of online education, and the perceived measures that can be used to promote the use of online education. The study concludes that online education has both advantages and disadvantages.

This study describes a typology of the teaching styles of practicing teachers. Teaching style refers to a teacher's distinct qualities that are persistent from situation to situation regardless of the content. The Teaching Style Assessment Scale, which measures teaching style, was completed by 1,261 nursing faculty in Japan. Prior cluster analysis revealed four naturally-occurring groups based on their teaching style, with teachers practicing learner-centered and teacher-centered styles nearly equally. The dual purposes of this study were (1) to measure the differences between these groups to determine if they were unique and (2) to describe any teaching style differences among these groups. Analysis of variance and Scheffé descriptive statistics supported the conclusion that a typology exists for classifying teaching styles as they are practiced in the field by teachers. Discriminant analysis identified the distinctions among the groups. The four distinct groups clearly described in this Teaching Styles Typology of Practicing Teachers are "Distinctly Teacher-Centered," "Moderately Teacher-Centered," "Consistently Learner-Centered," and "Decidedly Learner-Centered." This typology of teaching styles can be a valuable tool for teachers to improve their professional practice. It has implications for increased professionalism by facilitating increased self-awareness and assisting in developing an educational philosophy.

Science identity, or one's sense of recognition and competence as a scientist, is an invaluable tool for predicting student persistence and success, but is understudied among undergraduates completing preparatory work for later studies in medicine, nursing, and allied health ("pre-health career students"). In the United States, pre-health career students make up approximately half of all biology students and, as professionals, play important roles in caring for an aging, increasingly diverse population, managing the ongoing effects of a pandemic, and navigating socio-political shifts in public attitudes toward science and evidence-based medicine. Pre-health career students are also often members of groups marginalized and minoritized in STEM education, and generally complete their degrees in community college settings, which are chronically under-resourced and understudied. Understanding these students' science identities is thus a matter of social justice and increasingly important to public health in the United States. We examined science identity and engagement among community college biology students using two scales established and validated for use with STEM students attending four-year institutions. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis were used on two sub-samples drawn from the pool of 846 participants to confirm that the factor structures functioned as planned among the new population. Science identity values were then compared between pre-health career students (pre-nursing and pre-allied health) and other groups. Pre-health career students generally reported interest and performance/competence on par with their traditional STEM, pre-med, and pre-dentistry peers, challenging popular assumptions about these students' interests and abilities. However, they also reported significantly lower recognition than traditional STEM and pre-med/dentistry students. The implications for public health, researchers, and faculty are discussed.

The aim of this paper is to explore how practical knowledge can enhance higher education and Bildung for the human service professions. The paper sheds light on how governance reforms such as New Public Management have influenced higher education, where we argue that scientific rationality has weakened the professional's autonomy and responsibility. The paper is based on the three authors' experiences as university teachers and researchers from three different fields, namely, nursing, social work, and special education. By using Foucault's theory of the panoptic gaze, the analysis shows what is at stake in professional practice, education, and research and introduces perspectives from practical knowledge as a more functional understanding, highlighting 1) that subjective experiences are not being legitimized, 2) the inherent knowledge of practice, and 3) evidence and valid knowledge.

LBGTQ+ students often miss the support and information they need in the school nursing, but little is known about junior high school (JHS) nurses' work with LGBTQ+ students. 15 JHS nurses were interviewed in focus groups about their perceptions of supporting LGBTQ+ students. Four interconnected themes were identified with inductive thematic analysis: (1) JHS nurses' professional identity and practice; (2) Recognition of sexual and gender diversity in school; (3) Family acceptance process; and (4) LGBTQ+ students as school nursing clients. JHS nurses self-identified as accepting professionals, but having limited skills, knowledge, and education needed in supporting LGBTQ+ students. Supporting LGBTQ+ students is a complex phenomenon, and to enhance JHS nurses' competence in providing care for these students, sexual and gender diversity needs to be included in evidence-based nursing information sources, covered in nursing education, and the school needs to be secured as LGBTQ+ safe place.

Cheating in higher education is a significant problem. The study aims to determine nursing students' attitudes and opinions toward cheating in exams. The type of research is descriptive. The research data were collected in the classroom environment of 716 students in day and evening education programs. The research data were collected using socio-demographic characteristics form, and the Copying Attitude Scale. Descriptive statistics, t-tests, and variance analysis were used for data analyses. The most common method of cheating was receiving answers by talking to the friend sitting next to the student. The rate of cheating was high in both the day and evening education students. The students reported that most of the cheating occurred in final exams and high-credit major courses. Learning type (day/evening education programs) is not effective in cheating. High-credit major courses have increased the fear of failing the course. The most important reason for cheating in exams was the fear of failing a course.

This chapter uses a descriptive methodology that focuses on how the undergraduate team at a large multi-campus research university located in a mid-Atlantic state advocates and provides support for the scholarship of teaching and learning for non-tenure nursing teaching faculty from a variety of perspectives.

In Korea, there are cases where nurses use abusive language while teaching new nurses. Nursing students who observe and experience this kind of violence question themselves if they will be able to perform well in such an environment. This descriptive research study examined the mediating effect of negative emotions and the regulated mediating effect of resilience in the relationship between indirect experiences of violence and career identity. Junior- and senior-year students in the nursing departments of nine universities located in Gyeonggi Province and Seoul were recruited using snowball sampling from August 1st to August 31st, 2021. A total of 254 participants completed the questionnaire. Data were analyzed using the SPSS PROCESS macro. The factors that affected career identity were indirect experience of violence ([beta] = -0.1978, p = 0.0001), negative emotions ([beta] = -0.2364, p < 0.0001), and resilience ([beta] = 0.3107, p < 0.0001). Resilience ([beta] = -0.1113, p = 0.0112) had a moderated mediating effect on negative emotions. The index of moderated mediation of negative emotions and resilience was statistically significant at -0.0284 (95% CI [-0.0549, -0.0046]). As a result of this study, when students see a violent situation, they have negative emotions such as fear of making a mistake, and their confidence in nursing performance decreases. In order to avoid this situation, they avoid their career path. In this study, it showed that the greater the resilience, the greater the ability to overcome it. Violence itself needs to be improved, and resilience strengthening programs are needed for children and women exposed to violence.

Learning how to effectively respond to ethical dilemma can affect nurses' physical and mental health, which is not conducive to developing a nursing career. Nursing students' ethical behavior warrants attention as professionals about to begin clinical work. We aim to understand the current situation and influencing factors of Chinese nursing students' ethical behavior. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted. Descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression were used to analyze the data. Full-time nursing students were recruited from an undergraduate medical university in Jinan through convenient sampling from November to December 2021. Research ethics approval (No. 2022-0018) was obtained from the Ethics Committee of Affiliated Hospital of Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Informed consent was also received from participants. The EBT scores of the nursing students were 95.14 ± 11.37, which was not high compared with the total score. Gender, year level, and professional values had a significant impact on participants' ethical behavior. A positive correlation was found between nursing professional values and ethical behavior. A gap still exists between the moral development and maturity of undergraduate nursing students. To further cultivate their ethical behavior and improve their confidence and ability to respond to ethical dilemmas, more innovative methods must be employed in teaching ethics courses, and continuity in the ethics education system must be maintained. For male and third- and fourth-year nursing students who showed lower ethical behavior scores, nursing educators can develop their ethical behaviors by helping them establish positive professional values.

Cultural competence is a continuously developing process that requires transition-to-practice program training to enable new graduate nurses (NGNs) to transfer their knowledge and skills to clinical practice in a culturally sensitive manner. The development and implementation of residency programs, including a cultural competence curriculum, could support this transition. This study aimed to evaluate the preliminary effects of a hybrid learning module of cultural competence for NGNs. A quasi-experimental design was used in a 3,000-bed hospital in North Taiwan. We randomly allocated 37 NGNs to the experimental and control groups. The Cultural Competence Scale for Pre-Graduate Students to Licensed Professionals (CS-SP) was adopted to measure cultural competence before and after the intervention. We evaluated the correlations between learning time and cultural competence scores using a paired t-test, chi-square test, and Mann--Whitney test for statistical analysis. The curriculum for the learning application comprised three courses covering six topics. The experimental group scored significantly higher in awareness and skills after the intervention (p < 0.05), but there was no significant improvement in knowledge or self-efficacy. The control group showed no significant differences in any of the cultural competence subscale scores after intervention. The Mann-Whitney test showed that different learning times led to significant differences in the mean cultural competence scores (Z = 3.04, p < 0.05). Integrating cultural competency education into web-based NGNs' postgraduate year of nursing programs improved their cultural competence awareness and skills. The learning application can be adapted to target NGNs at different stages of the postgraduate year of nursing programs to maximize its benefits.

This pilot study adds to the understanding of interventions to manage acculturative stress experienced during undergraduate study abroad programs. It was designed to evaluate the impact of cognitive behavioral strategy training combined with intentional practice during mixed reality (MR) simulations on acculturative stress. Participants included a convenience sample of undergraduate nursing students enrolled in a faculty-led study abroad course. Students participated in two MR simulations within a virtual environment over back-to-back days. Simulations were written by nursing faculty experts to reproduce realistic clinical situations students may encounter while studying in Peru. The Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and Slater-Usoh-Steed questionnaire were administered. Quantitative biometric indices assessed during simulations included estimates of heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation and alterations in sweat gland activity reflective of changes in emotional state (galvanic skin response). There were changes in biometric indices within each simulation, but indices were not different between pre- and post- cognitive behavioral strategy training. Intentional reflective writing before, during, and after the study abroad program demonstrated an iterative cycle of reflection on action and mindfulness. These qualitative data suggest that pre-departure cognitive based behavior stress management strategies paired with simulated practice prior to departure may be one way to help nursing students deal with acculturative stress during study abroad experiences.

When teaching infection prevention and control (IPC), nursing education tends to focus on skills and fostering good practice rather than challenging students' thinking. Therefore, students' misconceptions about IPC receive less attention than they deserve. The purpose of the study was to make an inventory of student nurses' misconceptions about IPC before instruction and to make these misconceptions visible to teachers. The study was conducted in one vocational institute in Finland and is based on the answers of 29 practical nurse students before IPC training. The students took an online test requiring them to justify their answers to two multiple-true--false questions: 1) What is the main route of transmission between patients in healthcare facilities, and 2) What is the most effective and easiest manner to prevent the spreading of pathogens, e.g., multi-resistant bacteria in long-term care facilities? Analysis of the students' written justifications resulted in three mental models: 1) the Household Hygiene Model manifesting lay knowledge learned in domestic situations, 2) the Mixed Model consisting of lay knowledge, enriched with some professional knowledge of IPC, and 3) the Transmission Model manifesting a professional understanding of IPC. The first two mental models were considered to be misconceptions. Only one of the participants showed a professional understanding (i.e., the Transmission Model). To conclude, student nurses manifested systematic patterns of misconceptions before instruction. Unless the students are confronted with their misconceptions of IPC during instruction, it is likely that these misconceptions will impede their learning or make learning outcomes transient.

Elearning provides enormous opportunities for working nurses to further their studies and to enhance their professional development. The purpose of this study was to identify the elearning success factors in elearning nursing undergraduate programs in Malaysia. The conceptual framework for this study is based on DeLone and McLean's Information Systems Success Model. This is a cross-sectional quantitative correlational study using a predictive design and multivariate analysis method. Stratified random sampling technique was applied to recruit 241 nursing students through an online survey. Self-administered questionnaires were adapted to measure the independent and dependent variables of the study. The variance-based Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) method was employed to analyze the possible effects on the relationships among the variables studied. The findings revealed statistically significant relationships among the factors of self-directed learning (SDL) abilities, elearning quality, student satisfaction, and elearning benefits. The study found a mediating effect of student satisfaction on elearning benefits through SDL abilities and elearning quality. The findings highlight the crucial role of learning environmental needs among online learners. A collaborative effort between universities, educators, and support personnel is essential to ensure successful elearning education for student nurses.

This mixed method study utilized the Online Faculty Caring, Presence, and Immediacy Behaviors Survey and explored 142 graduate nursing students' perceptions of faculty immediacy in accelerated online courses. Students ranked online faculty immediacy characteristics and determined level of agreement with faculty actions. The quantitative findings were compared to determine differences between students who perceived that online faculty utilized immediacy behaviors versus students who perceived that faculty did not use immediacy behaviors. Five themes emerged from the qualitative results that reflect faculty presence, communication, support, and feedback, which emerged from the open-ended survey questions and support the quantitative results. The study findings informed the creation of specific strategies for online faculty who teach accelerated courses.

International studies have revealed that Black undergraduate nursing students experience higher levels of attrition from nursing programs. Touted as the least likely racial group to graduate, Black students struggle disproportionately in comparison to their non-Black peers. Canadian literature, however, is largely silent on this topic and this population as a whole. Grounding our reflections in one student's experience, we argue that Canadian nurse educators need to implement invitational, antiracist approaches that intentionally support Black students' success. This article supports our argument by reflecting on both the literature and personal experience. First, we explain our reflective processes. Then, the history of nursing in Canada is presented, followed by an exploration of the current educational landscape. Next, we discuss Black students' experiences in nursing education. We conclude with recommendations for Canadian nurse educators.

The need to encourage critical thinking and academically engage nursing students in a clinical environment compels faculty use of assorted teaching strategies, including concept mapping and flipped learning. Though nurse educators encourage both strategies, concurrent use of both methods in clinical teaching is rare. Thus, this study examined the use of concept mapping in a flipped clinical course to encourage students' engagement and critical thinking. Twelve baccalaureate nursing students in a second-year medical-surgical clinical course provided the data for this basic qualitative study by completing journals or diaries throughout the course and through individual semi-structured interviews at course exit. Open coding of interview transcripts and journals in conjunction with constant comparative analysis helped develop categories and themes. Several overlapping themes emerged from interview and journal data. Nursing students indicated that they developed different ways of thinking, learned from many people, became actively involved in learning and expanded their thinking, connected information, determined clinical priorities and made decisions, became confident and knowledgeable in their ability to recall information and transfer knowledge, and experienced increased critical thinking and higher level thinking skills. The results of the study showed the participants derived positive meaning from their learning in a nontraditional flipped clinical with concept mapping. Students were actively engaged in their learning and were able to expand their thinking while working collaboratively with their instructor, patients, and staff.

When providing healthcare services, healthcare students face a variety of ethical issues and conflicts daily. Such characteristics as ethical sensitivity and emotional intelligence are influential in determining an individual's performance and can prove useful in coping with challenges in life. Given the significance of these two variables in the career prospects and educational and professional lives of students, the present cross-sectional study with 486 students majoring in nursing, operating room, and anesthesia, aims to investigate the relationship between ethical sensitivity and emotional intelligence. Data were collected using demographics, ethical sensitivity, and emotional intelligence. The students' ethical sensitivity level was high, while their emotional intelligence was average. Regression analysis revealed that students' ethical sensitivity was related to their emotional intelligence and gender. There is also a significant correlation between ethical sensitivity and emotional intelligence on one hand and gender on the other: female students possess higher levels of ethical sensitivity, while male students have greater emotional intelligence. Students in nursing schools may benefit from greater insight into the concepts of ethical sensitivity and emotional intelligence and ways to enhance them.

This paper reports on research that extends knowledge about higher education students' perceptions of online engagement. In particular, the study aimed to identify what students thought engagement was and how they experienced it. Understanding students' views about online engagement will provide a more comprehensive understanding of the topic and should assist instructional designers to support academic staff to develop online courses that are more likely to engage their students. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study found that students felt most engaged with learning when doing practical, hands-on activities. Additional findings from the qualitative and quantitative data are highlighted, with some differences between the students' perceptions in the different types of data, particularly concerning social engagement. This suggests that further research is warranted. The paper offers several practical implications for student learning.

Background: Mobile phones have become a widely accepted learning mode due to the impact of COVID-19. This study explores the mobile technology acceptance, among nursing students at selected educational institutions in South India. Materials and Methods: Quantitative cross-sectional descriptive design. First-year 176 B.Sc. nursing students who underwent blended learning were selected by the purposive sampling method. The tool "Technology Acceptance Model" was used to collect responses. Bivariate analysis was used to determine the relationship between the demographic and study-related variables with the mobile technology acceptance using SPSS version 25.0. Results: The majority 73.9% of the students belonged to the age group of 18-19 years, females 76.7% and, 98.9% were unmarried. Among the constructs of TAM, a mean (SD) value of 22.08 (2.26) was found for material (mobile device audio/video) characteristics the mean (SD) value was 22.08 (2.26), attitude about use 17.58 (1.95), behavioral intention 17.46 (1.78) and system characteristics 17.21 (2.27). The mobile technology acceptance revealed that 126 (71.6%) strongly agreed, 49 (27.8%) agreed, and 1 (0.6%) was neutral with a mean (SD) of 105.19 (8.68), respectively. A positive correlation was found between the system characteristics, material characteristics, perceived ease to use, perceived usefulness, attitude about the use, behavioral intention with a P value <0.001. There was a statistically significant association between Mobile technology acceptance and time spent by the students for independent studies shown the Chi-square value of 12.7, with P value <0.05. Conclusion: Nursing students had a positive acceptance and behavior toward smartphone use.

Design-based Research (DBR) focuses on real-world problems, emphasizes studying an educational intervention in its supposed context, uses a cyclical process of design, implementation, evaluation, and improvement, utilizes mixed research methods, stresses reciprocal relationships between theories and practice, and involves a close collaborative relationship between researchers and practitioners. Three iterative DBR research cycles were conducted on a project-based learning (PjBL) implementation in three population health nursing clinical PjBL blocks at a Midwest university. Data were collected at the end of each cycle through surveys, focus group interviews with students, faculty, and clinical agency contacts, as well as student work and performance. The data were analyzed, and revisions and improvements were planned for subsequent blocks and future use in the course.

From 2017-2020, 15 universities collaborated to create and share OER for a bachelor nursing program. A study was undertaken to analyse the impact of the project activities leading to the commitment to work towards sustaining the initiative. The project was described using the ESH model (Weggeman, 2000). Two sub-studies provided the results on the positive and negative impact of specific project activities and the impact of the project on the desired behaviour of educators, sharing and reusing OER. Rogers' theory of diffusion of innovation is used to interpret the results (Rogers, 2003). The main findings of the study are that defining and using a quality model for OER was crucial for the success of the project. For sustaining the activity after project ending, decision makers were involved immediately from the start. The management style with many responsibilities for the project members had a positive indirect impact on project outcomes.

This descriptive study involving over 50 students, both undergraduate and graduate nursing students. A modified Community Service Attitudes Scale was given pre and post service-learning activity to the students. Students overwhelmingly reported an increase in their cultural awareness, their ability to work effectively with others and their feeling of making a real difference for those they served in the activity. Utilization of a service-learning activity (SLA) via health fairs is an effective pedagogy to offer clinical hours and exposure to professional situations for nursing students. The impact of the SLA is multifactorial on the students and on the community served.

Complex healthcare systems and ambiguous clinical decisions can result in medical errors which threaten patient safety. There is a need for improved awareness of medical errors across healthcare disciplines. We utilised team-based learning (TBL) to pilot an interprofessional patient safety module for senior health professional students. We evaluated the use of TBL within the interprofessional context to achieve student learning outcomes. Twenty-seven students from pharmacy (n=11), nursing (n=8) and medicine (n=8) faculties participated. Data were collected via questionnaires, focus groups, class observation and student test scores. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics. Framework analysis was used to code qualitative data using social capital as a conceptual framework. In total, 26/27 (96%) of participants completed the questionnaire and 20/27 (70%) attended focus groups. There was no significant difference in prior knowledge between the disciplines. The TBL module enriched the learning environment and enabled students to prepare, problem-solve and interact with facilitators. The TBL pedagogy and interprofessional framework enabled the development of social capital among students. The module demonstrated the potential of interprofessional education to shift knowledge and attitudes towards a greater appreciation of patient safety issues and better prepare health professional students for the workforce. The TBL pedagogy strengthened knowledge sharing and fostered collaboration across disciplines.

Active learning with student engagement has been demonstrated to improve knowledge retention and improve learning in graduate education. Nurse anesthesia education has traditionally been taught using lecture with slide presentations without considering student centered learning. Much attention has been given to active learning strategies to promote student engagement and content retention, yet little information exists regarding student preferences for in higher level graduate nursing courses. This mixed-methods study aimed to examine student learning preferences for seven different instructional methodologies; traditional lecture, a problem-based learning exercise, reading with workbook assignments, development of cognitive aids, game-based learning, practice questions, and a case study, as well as to which were best to learn by. Students prefer game-based learning, practice questions, and assigned reading with workbooks over lecture and other active learning exercises and reported game-based learning and workbooks from assigned readings as easiest to methods by which to learn.

The pandemic brought a whole newfound collection of words into our everyday language, some of which had been terms that were infrequently used outside academic and medical settings. However, as familiar as this new pandemic vocabulary has become, there are still several terms that often get mixed in everyday conversations, media communications, and even in the medical field. Some of these terms are often mistaken, which may lead to issues in the understanding of important concepts. Science communication, as a facet of scientific literacy, intends to educate people in an easy-to-understand manner, and this communication is even more important in health care, when a literate patient's medical decisions depend frequently on this process. In this article, we explore the use and misuse of some of the most common terms utilized during the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic by nursing and medical students, i.e., future health care professionals, in the hospital environment. This single-center hospital-based cross-sectional study, performed throughout September 2022, included 30 medical and nursing students. All participants completed a self-administered 15-item anonymous questionnaire at a single time point. Nine multiple-choice questions evaluated knowledge, diagnosis, disease manifestations, and vaccines related to the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus. Six questions provided demographics and quality assessment information. The analysis of the answers indicated that for at least 75% of the population surveyed, COVID-19 literacy was better for terms related to technology and actions (3/5 questions answered correctly) than for terms related to the disease (1/4 questions answered correctly). The overall median score for questions 1 to 9 was 4.5 of 9 points in total. Based on the results, the language used in the questionnaire was considered easy to understand, with an easy to medium level of complexity, and the perceived time required to complete the questionnaire was less than 5 min. In conclusion, our results showed that efforts need to be made in continuous professional education to increase the knowledge in COVID-19 literacy in the health care environment for medical and nursing students. Larger studies are recommended to identify and to fulfill the challenges that COVID-19 brought to medical and nursing education.

According to the socio-constructivist theories of learning, collaborative learning allows negotiation of shared meanings and co-construction of new knowledge among peers. This approach fits particularly well with healthcare professional education needs, as these professionals often face challenging issues that require the ability to fully understand the complexity of the patients' health conditions through working with others. However, while collaborative learning approaches are widely used in face-to-face nurse education contexts, their online equivalent still seem to be understudied, in spite of their great potential for the field. This systematic literature review investigates: (1) to what extent are online collaborative learning activities being adopted and investigated in formal nurse education, (2) What kind of online collaborative learning activities/techniques are proposed and what team structures are employed, (3) what technologies are used to run these learning activities, and (4) what methods are used to evaluate the impact of these activities. Studies were included if they presented online collaborative learning activities proposed by Universities or VET (Vocational Education and Training) providers. Articles published in 2015 or later were collected in November 2022 from Scopus, Web of Science and Medline. A total of 1059 records were retrieved, selected and analysed by four coders, resulting in a final dataset of 75 papers that were coded for type of collaborative approach, study characteristics, research methodology used, strength of evidence, and relevance to the research questions. Most of them described the use of activities like Discussions, Case Studies and Peer Reviews, sometimes in association with Role Play. In terms of technologies, Learning Managements Systems, forums and social media were already common pre-pandemic, but during the lockdown synchronous communication tools -- often used to support simulations -- took over. Data collection was carried out quantitatively, qualitatively or using mixed methods, but in many cases data reporting is weak or absent at all. The majority of the retrieved papers illustrate activities where collaboration was not structured in any way and there was no joint assignment or common objective/artefact that learners needed to reach/produce. In case of blended interventions, often collaboration is limited to the face-to-face sessions, while the digital setting is used for individual work. In terms of social structure, most of the time small groups or plenaries are used. In summary, the review reveals that studies on online collaborative learning for nurses are limited, especially in Europe, and the design of online collaborative activities often clashes with the principles put forward by the Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) research community. Based on the results of the review we put forth some key recommendations, such as ensuring that online collaboration involves the creation of a shared artefact and striving to make virtual simulations actually collaborative, rather than limited to envisage student interactions in the debriefing phase. The paper also proposes a number of research areas seldom investigated and that would deserve further attention in the future.

The purpose of this study was to establish whether application of the four states of relatedness (connectedness, disconnectedness, enmeshment, and parallelism) and four processes or social competencies (belonging, reciprocity, mutuality, and synchrony) within the theory of human relatedness may have relevance and transferability to the practicum experiences of an international nursing student population. Secondary data transcriptions derived from focus groups involving 20 final-year pre-registration nursing undergraduates at an academic institution in Hong Kong which directly examined their placement reflections and views were analyzed against the states of relatedness and process or social competences identified within this theory. Data from the study provided evidence to support every state of relatedness and process or social competency within the theory of human relatedness. Evaluating pre-registration nursing student placement experiences against this theory suggests that improving a practicum may necessitate creating conditions for workplace learning which more effectively foster connectedness, belonging, reciprocity, mutuality, and synchrony, minimize the need for parallelism and help prevent disconnectedness and enmeshment.

The theory-practice gap in nursing education confuses students and decreases the quality of their training. This study aims to examine the gap between theoretical teaching and clinical training for students at AAUP. A cross-sectional survey of 192 nursing students at AAUP. Questions measuring aspects of the theory-practice gap were developed based on the literature review. Socio-demographic variables included sex, age, residence, and school year. Simple frequencies and multivariate linear regression were used to analyze the data. The p-value was set at 0.05 for statistical significance. The practical trainer was the most important factor in bridging students' theory-practice gap. Practical trainers who explain to the students the theoretical protocols of the nursing procedures produced students with better abilities to link theory and practice (B = 1.53, P = 0.000). The university teacher was less important in the theory-practice link. The simulation training was significantly related to students' abilities to link practice with theory (B = 0.28, P = 0.036). Investing in nursing clinical practice and supporting the clinical instructors is recommended. Communication between the university teachers and the practical instructors can improve their training skills and their abilities to link theory with practice.

The New Culture of Water (NCW) is a catalyst for sustainable transformation between political agreements and the unsustainability of the real world, thus requiring an integral participation for an efficient water management where the academy will try to make a substantial contribution. Therefore, this study aimed to design, implement and evaluate four competencies: Knowledge, Attitude, Perception and Practices (KAPP) of a formal program of Education for Sustainability (EfS) on the New Water Culture (NWC), addressing issues such as prevention of water quality, conservation and efficient use at home. To carry out the evaluation, a semi-structured survey of 47 items was conducted in three stages: at the beginning (diagnostic), during the development of the (EfS) (formative) and at the end (summative). A total of 103 nursing students participated in the (EfS), divided into two groups A and B, with the addition of group C as a control group. The results showed that group A had the best results, in general. Statistical tests to calculate the mean, standard deviation (SD) and a validation with the nonparametric Wilcoxon test showing a significant change in the participants of group A, which indicated an important impact of the (EfS). This study also provides an overview of the community situation that can help trigger early warnings to identify weaknesses in water management.

This research sought to investigate EFL nursing students' use of vocabulary learning strategies to learn medical terminology and further assess strategies used in relation to learning outcomes measured by two types of vocabulary knowledge: meaning recall (passive recall) and meaning recognition (passive recognition). The participants, 138 EFL nursing students in Taiwan, completed a meaning recall test and a meaning recognition test in week 8 of the semester, and they then took the English proficiency test (TOEIC Bridge) and filled out a vocabulary learning strategies survey in the following week. Both vocabulary outcomes had moderate correlations with English proficiency. Strategy use patterns appeared for the nursing students' medical terminology acquisition. They focused on looking up for corresponding meaning in L1 using a search engine, then learning orthographical and phonological forms to facilitate retention. A Pearson Correlation Analysis revealed that inferring word meaning, utilizing mnemonic devices for retention, and managing vocabulary learning were significantly and positively correlated with both vocabulary scores. In contrast, social strategies were the least conducive to achievement.

It is known that the students' attitudes toward e-learning are an important factor in achieving the targeted learning achievement. The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between attitudes toward e-learning and the academic achievements. This cross-sectional and correlational study was conducted with a total of 135 first-year nursing students. Data were collected via Student Information Form, General Attitudes toward E-Learning Scale, Vital Signs Skills Laboratory Practice Assessment Videos. Two-Way ANOVA, Pearson correlation analysis, multiple linear regression analysis were used to analyze the data. The total mean score of the first-year NSs' general attitude scale toward e-learning was found to be 52.58±15.93. A statistically negative correlation was found between the "avoidance of e-learning" factor and the NSs' vital signs skills general achievement scores (r= -0.185; p= 0.035). Gender ([beta]1= 5.399, p= 0.001), receiving adequate counseling and help on using the e-learning platform ([beta]1= 4.895, p= 0.022) and avoidance of e-learning ([beta]1= -0.222 p= 0.046) explained 20.9% of the variance in vital signs overall achievement score. The results showed that negative attitudes and negative satisfaction with e-learning may lead to a decrease in e-learning academic achievement.

Mindful practices have been found to decrease levels of stress, anxiety, and burnout, while enhancing resilience and coping in those who engage in them. The beneficial effects of mindfulness on improving physiological and psychological well-being are well supported within the literature. However, little has been done to learn how faculty in higher education, specifically in nursing, may experience the effect of mindful practices. The purpose of this study was to explore nursing faculty perceptions of how mindfulness may influence their teaching-learning practices as well as their daily lives. Fourteen full-time and part-time nursing faculty participated in a three-part mindfulness training workshop series delivered over 6 weeks. Upon completing the workshop series, seven of the 14 nursing faculty participated in a focus-group interview about their experiences engaging in the mindful activities during and in-between the workshops. Clandinin and Connelly's (2000) narrative inquiry method was used to analyze participant accounts. This process entailed crafting a composite story that was sent to the participants for member checking. The composite story was analyzed using the three levels of justification: personal, practical, and social. Two significant patterns emerged: (1) Integrating mindful practices into personal life, and (2) Integrating mindful practices into the teaching and learning situations. The findings from this study contribute to the growing body of knowledge on how engaging in mindful practices may enhance the personal and the professional well-being of faculty in higher education, and thus support their teaching-learning encounters.

The advent of virtual reality (VR) in education offers unique possibilities for facilitating cooperative learning strategies, particularly in fields demanding intricate spatial understanding, such as gross anatomy. This study investigates the impact of integrating cooperative learning strategies within a VR-based gross anatomy curriculum, focusing on enhancing students' anatomy knowledge and skills. We analyzed the performance of two cohorts of first-year nursing students across five semesters (2016-2020), where traditional learning methods were used in the first three semesters (2016-2018), and a VR-based cooperative learning approach was adopted in the last two semesters (2019-2020). Our findings suggest that the VR-based cooperative learning group achieved significantly higher scores in their gross anatomy laboratory courses compared to their counterparts learning through traditional methods. This research provides valuable insights into how the integration of VR technology and cooperative learning strategies can not only enhance learning outcomes but also improve the VR learning experience by reducing motion sickness. It accentuates the potential of VR-based cooperative learning as an impactful educational tool in anatomy education. Future research should further explore the optimal integration of VR and cooperative learning strategies in diverse course types and their potential to enhance educational outcomes and the learning experience.

Nursing has employed distance education for decades. In the 21st century, distance programs have often been delivered online. This became even more prevalent since the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the preponderance of online nursing courses, the delivery of courses virtually does not necessarily mean that these offerings are intentionally developed online education. We discuss a secondary analysis of data examining the formation of online nursing programs at Athabasca University. This historical inquiry used interpretive description of the pedagogy, both learning strategies and the theories that substantiate the strategies, using thematic analysis. Participants discussed their theoretical substantiation of online education. We posit that online nursing education involves a purposeful pedagogy including theoretical bases and would benefit from a strong sense of mission behind the course delivery. Findings from this study may apply to online programs, irrespective of profession or discipline.

This case study explores the lived experience of three faculty from different disciplines engaged in an experiential undergraduate nursing study abroad (SA) course, which is largely absent from the literature. This research found specific personal and professional transformative effects of multidisciplinary SA experiences for faculty. Considerations for faculty planning to engage in multidisciplinary SA will be identified, including impacts of faculty dynamics and physical and psychological demands. These findings further highlight, document, and contribute to the growing literature related to the experiential impacts of SA on faculty professional development.
