Purpose: Mathematical literacy and mathematical problem-solving are crucial abilities that link mathematics content to real life applications, facilitating both mathematics understanding and mathematical processes. The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the STEMEN (STEM and educational neuroscience) teaching model in enhancing mathematical literacy and problem-solving skills. Methodology: This study adopted a pre-test and post-test control group design. Among 156 Grade 9 students from a secondary school in Phayao, Thailand, 70 were randomly selected. The STEMEN teaching model was implemented in the experimental group, while the 5E teaching model, typically used in a normal classroom was employed in the control group. Two types of tests, namely the mathematical literacy test and the mathematical problem-solving test, were used as research instruments. Pre and post-data were collected from both the experimental and control groups. Repeated measures ANOVA with Wilks' lambda was employed to analyze the mean comparison for mathematical literacy and mathematical problem-solving. Findings: The findings revealed that the mean scores for mathematical literacy and mathematical problem-solving were relatively higher in the STEMEN teaching model group compared to the 5E teaching model group. These results provide insights into the effectiveness of the STEMEN teaching model in enhancing learning outcomes, particularly mathematical literacy and problem-solving in mathematics. Significance: The results of this study showed that the STEMEN teaching model was effective in increasing learning outcomes, including mathematical literacy and problem-solving. These outcomes should enable teachers to design effective and efficient instructional strategies for enhancing mathematical literacy and problem-solving in classrooms.

Introduction: As higher education continues to prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), cognitive/behavioral neuroscience and other physiologically based psychology courses may face challenges incorporating DEI issues into the curriculum relative to other subfields of psychology. Statement of the Problem: Instructors of these courses may believe that their discipline is more objective than other psychology subfields, or may simply be unsure where to insert discussion of DEI issues into their course material. Literature Review: There is a substantial evidence regarding both the fallacy of total scientific objectivity and how structural inequalities can impact brain structure and function in historically marginalized populations. Teaching Implications: I discuss where and how in the neuroscience curriculum instructors can implement relevant discussion of DEI issues, as well as provide practical suggestions for how to increase belongingness for historically marginalized students, including open educational resource lecture slides and a critical-thinking assignment. Conclusion: Excluding DEI content from neuroscience courses harms our students and perpetuates the myth of total scientific objectivity, so it is imperative that faculty include DEI discussions in neuroscience-based courses.

A three-round Delphi method surveyed 17 experts, identifying 108 essential neurofeedback competencies for counselors-in-training. This research addresses concerns about the impact of neuro-informed practices on counselor identity and scope of practice, providing a foundation for incorporating neurofeedback training into counselor education.

The expanding field of affective neuroscience is redefining the role of emotions in cognition, reasoning, and judgment. This contradicts long-standing assumptions about cognition that consider emotions antithetical to learning. Emotions arose early in human brain development as essential to survival by directing the embodied brain toward life-sustaining and away from life-threatening environments. Metaphorical language, which emerges from embodied experience, is also necessary for thinking, reasoning, and learning. The brain's right hemisphere (RH) is the primary site for understanding figurative and symbolic language. Educational environments emphasize the left hemisphere's capacity for syntactic language and direct, linear thought. Though the RH has a more comprehensive view of reality, its contributions may be ignored or dismissed because it communicates metaphorically and symbolically. Drawing on elements of affective neuroscience, embodied emotions, and hemispheric difference may provide educators with new awareness in reconstructing adult learning environments with the embodied brain in mind.

According to several studies, the three levels of representation in chemistry are the fundamental aspects of effective learning and understanding of chemistry. In this study, we aim to illustrate how students identify changes in the matter using eye-tracking and verbalizations. Five students observed chemical and physical phenomena depicted by using the three representational levels under eye-tracking monitoring. This allows making inferences about which representation received students' attention for the longest time. In order to enrich this illustrative experiment, data were triangulated with think-aloud techniques and researchers' observations during the procedure. Our results suggest that eye-tracking experiments may provide some relevant insights into students' cognition regarding representational levels. The multiple case study presented hereby pointed out that the levels observed for the longest time were the macro and the submicro levels, although only the macro level was relevant to the student's answers, according to their verbalizations. Finally, qualitative analyses of these illustrations are also presented and discussed.

The science of reading refers to the extensive body of research on how we learn to read and the most effective methods for teaching reading. Our knowledge of what works in reading instruction is based on decades of rigorous, scientifically based research in the fields of education, cognitive psychology, and neuroscience. This research digest provides an overview of the science of reading, followed by a brief summary of research-based frameworks that explain the reading process, and concludes with a discussion of reading research in adult education.

Background: This review explores the pastoral role of early childhood development (ECD) teachers through a trauma-informed lens, grounded in neuroscience. Traumatised learners experience neurobiological changes that hinder cognitive and physical functioning. The review highlights the importance of pastoral support in ECD because of learners' increasing mental health needs. Teachers must be equipped with various strategies to support emotional development, and collaborate with school nurses, counsellors, and psychologists, especially those specialising in ECD, to foster learners' well-being and growth. Aim: This study aimed to examine the ECD teacher's pastoral role, informed by neuroscience, in supporting learners with childhood trauma. Setting: The study focuses on ECD teachers in South Africa working with young learners affected by trauma. Methods: A contextual and conceptual literature review was conducted using inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were analysed through hermeneutics and interpretivism. Results: Understanding neuroscientific principles can transform the ECD teacher's role, offering insights into trauma's neurological effects. Teachers can implement resilience-building strategies and create trauma-informed environments that support learners' emotional, cognitive, and social development. Conclusion: Neuroscientific theories can reshape the ECD teacher's pastoral role, fostering safe, trusting spaces for learners' growth. This approach helps to mitigate the effects of trauma, promoting resilience and social competence in learners, and contributes to a supportive learning environment. Contribution: Trauma-informed, neuroscience-based practices enable ECD teachers to prioritise empathy, safety, and trust, addressing the needs of traumatised learners and promoting resilience through early intervention.

Recent advances in educational neuroscience research underscore the need for a comprehensive analysis of articles in this field; such scrutiny can elucidate the practical implications of neuroscience findings in education and illuminate future research directions. The purpose of this study was to conduct a descriptive content analysis of articles published in the field of educational neuroscience. The data collected through the Educational Neuroscience Articles Classification Form were analyzed via content analysis. The diversity of research in the field of educational neuroscience and the growth in the number of studies in recent years demonstrate that this discipline represents a comprehensive and potentially effective field. In addition, developing concrete suggestions for practice strengthens the integration of educational neuroscience into educational practices. Furthermore, future research needs to focus more on converting theoretical knowledge into practical applications and assessing the impact of these applications. Moreover, increasing interdisciplinary cooperations is crucial for educational neuroscience to realize its full potential. Finally, further studies conducted through mixed methods and qualitative research methods provide a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of educational neuroscience. On the other hand, the following recommendations have been made based on these insights: applied research studies can be conducted to directly integrate neuroscientific findings into educational practices. In addition, cooperation among educational scientists, neuroscientists, and researchers in the field of psychology can make the integration of neuroscientific findings into educational practices more efficient. Last but not least, research conducted through qualitative and mixed methods provides a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of educational neuroscience.

The current study investigates the impact of an educational program based on cognitive neuroscience on developing reading comprehension skills among second-grade students in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. To achieve this objective, the researchers employed a quasi-experimental design, selecting a sample of 59 students from Princess Nora bint Abdulrahman Al Saud School for Girls and AlMadinah Al-Jamia Educational School for Boys, both under the supervision of the Education Directorate in Najran region. The sample was divided into two groups: 30 students in the experimental group and 29 in the control group. The researchers developed two instruments: a cognitive neuroscience-based educational program and a written test. After ensuring their validity and reliability, these instruments were administered to the study participants. The results revealed statistically significant differences in favor of the experimental group, while no significant differences were found based on gender or the interaction between gender and group. In light of the results, the researchers provided a set of recommendations.

This study investigates the efficacy of incorporating neuropedagogical elements into virtual simulators for advanced chemistry education in universities. Utilizing a mixed-method approach, it uses questionnaires completed by 50 organic chemistry students. These questionnaires included both general and Likert scale questions, focusing on students' experiences with the PhET Interactive Simulation. The results highlight the positive impact of neuropedagogy on students' learning attitudes, cognitive abilities, and skill development, particularly in areas like critical thinking, analytical skills, and social competencies. A significant portion of students reported enhanced educational outcomes: 76% observed improved training effectiveness, 88% better understood the subject, and 96% found the virtual simulator-based learning more engaging. Furthermore, the study notes improvements in students' problem-solving abilities (68%), logical reasoning (92%), and comprehension of chemical processes (94%). These findings emphasize the value of integrating neuroscience principles in chemical education, potentially benefiting both tertiary and secondary education sectors. They indicate the necessity for educational adaptation in line with interdisciplinary research in cognitive and neurological sciences. This research not only serves as a valuable resource for chemistry teachers but also sets the stage for future empirical studies exploring neuroscience's role in teacher education. The study underscores the importance of further investigation into how teachers implement neuropedagogical techniques and the effectiveness of such applications, advocating for continuous development in educational methodologies.

Background/Purpose: This study investigates the integration of neuropedagogy, neuroimaging, artificial intelligence (AI), and deep learning in educational systems. The research aims to elucidate how these technologies can be synergistically applied to optimize learning processes based on individual neurocognitive profiles, thereby enhancing educational effectiveness. Materials/Methods: A mixed-methods approach was employed, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative analyses. The study involved 297 students and 59 teachers. Quantitative methods included exploratory factor analysis (EFA) to validate the Neuropedagogy, Neuroimaging, Artificial Intelligence, and Deep Learning Scale, and Spearman correlations to examine inter-variable relationships. Qualitative data were collected through focus groups and analyzed using selective coding. Additionally, a comparative case study using portable electroencephalography (EEG) was conducted to observe direct neurological effects of different learning approaches. Results: EFA confirmed the construct validity of the scale (KMO = 0.89, p < 0.001). Spearman correlations revealed significant positive relationships between all dimensions (0.65-0.72, p < 0.01). Multiple regression analysis indicated that AI was the strongest predictor of deep learning ([beta] = 0.39, p < 0.001). The neuroimaging case study demonstrated increased frontal and prefrontal lobe activation and enhanced theta-gamma wave synchronization in AI-supported learning tasks, suggesting more integrated information processing. Conclusion: The findings provide empirical evidence for the transformative potential of integrating neuropedagogy, neuroimaging, AI, and deep learning in education. The strong predictive relationship between AI and deep learning, coupled with the neuroimaging results, suggests that this technological convergence can significantly enhance learning processes. However, the study also highlighted the need for careful ethical considerations in its implementation. These results contribute to the growing body of knowledge on technology-enhanced learning and offer a foundation for developing more personalized and effective educational strategies.

Teaching is increasingly defined through the syntax of cognitive science, by retrieval practice, spaced learning, and interleaving, generating a computational rhythm for learning as a system of inputs and outputs that builds up an individual's memory over time. This, I argue, is at odds with the choreography of art and design education as an aesthetic, social, and material practice. An alternative mapping is required to fully understand the chronology of learning that takes place in and through the subject of art and design with human and nonhuman others. Drawing from a review of research in the field of Neuroaesthetics, I will seek to defend the unique temporality of art and design education and imagine different visualisations of learning in the subject beyond the computational.

Students' school requirements and learning activities engage many different cognitive processes, including language processing, memory, learning, attention, reasoning, decision-making, and social interaction. However, students rarely learn about these cognitive processes, or the brain mechanisms underlying them and therefore lack the critical understanding of how they operate. Here, we describe a novel neuroscience curriculum, developed through a research-practice partnership (RPP) between neuroscientists and educators, aimed at providing students with the opportunity to learn about their own brain and cognitive abilities and engage in authentic neuroscientific inquiry. The curriculum is organized around three pillars: Learn Neuroscience-Experience Neuroscience-Contribute to Neuroscience. These are designed to optimize relevance, student engagement, and interactive hands-on experience. In particular, by incorporating genuine neuroscientific research as part of the program, students are offered a front-row seat to the scientific process using cutting-edge neurotechnology and gain firsthand experience with the challenges and excitements of scientific inquiry.

In this article, we give an overview of translational educational neuroscience (mind, brain, and education) in the United Kingdom. We consider the state of "translation," describing respectively the state of the dialogue between researchers and educators, the state of evaluation of approaches to improve educational outcomes, and the state of innovation in research translation. We consider "the teacher perspective." What do UK teachers think about educational neuroscience and its potential for informing classroom practice, and how do ideas about pedagogical approaches feature among their everyday concerns? We describe the results of a recent survey from a representative sample of over 1,000 UK teachers, and a case study of a UK high school teacher who employs educational neuroscience in his practice and what this entails. Lastly, we consider the "policy perspective" and assess the recent move by the UK government to introduce knowledge of cognitive science into initial and early-career teacher training.

Advances in the field of Mind, Brain, and Education (MBE) have been limited by a fundamental separation between university-based neuroscience laboratories and school communities, constraining the field's ability to collaboratively devise research studies germane to child development. This commentary explores the assertion that the persistent obstacles in MBE work may stem from how we structure these partnerships. We examine this premise through a detailed case study of a research-practice partnership that has successfully implemented a range of innovative programmatic elements, including the establishment of specially trained liaisons, situating a neuroscience lab within a school, and actively involving practitioners and students in research. An analysis of the values that iteratively emerged from this approach may encourage other MBE stakeholders to consider affordances of this model when embarking upon future partnership endeavors.

Neuromyths are pervasive misconceptions about the brain and its functioning. They are widely held by the general population, as well as by teachers and by preservice teachers. Need for cognition (NfC) may offer a protective effect against misconceptions. The current study examined endorsement of neuromyths in a sample of aspiring teachers and other students as a function of NfC. In an online survey, participants rated agreement with a range of misconceptions and factual statements about the brain and completed a scale measuring NfC. Results showed that participants correctly rejected two thirds of the misconception statements, but there was a high level of agreement for some neuromyth items. Aspiring teachers performed better on factual statements but not neuromyths compared to those not aspiring to teach. NfC was positively associated with ratings of the factual statements, but not with the misconceptions. The findings suggest that some neuromyths remain pervasive and NfC does not confer protection.

Neurodiversity refers to the idea that all brains--no matter their differences--are valuable and should be accepted. Attitudes toward the neurodiversity perspective can have real-life impacts on the lives of neurodivergent people, from effects on daily interactions to how professionals deliver services for neurodivergent individuals. In order to identify negative attitudes toward neurodiversity and potentially intervene to improve them, we first need to measure these attitudes. This article describes the development and initial validation of the Neurodiversity Attitudes Questionnaire (NDAQ), including item revision based on expert review, cognitive interviews, systematic evaluation of participants' response process, and analysis of the instrument's internal factor structure using exploratory structural equation modeling. Pilot analysis with 351 individuals mostly living in the United States who were currently working in or intending to pursue helping professions indicates that the NDAQ has construct validity, is well understood by participants, and fits a five-factor structure. While the NDAQ represents the first instrument designed to specifically assess attitudes toward the neurodiversity perspective, further validation work is still needed.

Cognitive science has demonstrated that we construct knowledge about the world by abstracting patterns from routinely encountered experiences and storing them as semantic memories. This preregistered study tested the hypothesis that caregiving-related early adversities (crEAs) shape affective semantic memories to reflect the content of those adverse interpersonal-affective experiences. We also tested the hypothesis that because affective semantic memories may continue to evolve in response to later-occurring positive experiences, child-perceived attachment security will inform their content. The sample comprised 160 children (ages 6-12 at Visit 1; 87F/73 M), 66% of whom experienced crEAs (n = 105). At Visit 1, crEA exposure prior to study enrollment was operationalized as parental-reports endorsing a history of crEAs (abuse/neglect, permanent/significant parent-child separation); while child-reports assessed concurrent attachment security. A false memory task was administered online [approximately]2.5 years later (Visit 2) to probe the content of affective semantic memories--specifically attachment schemas. Results showed that crEA exposure (vs. no exposure) was associated with a higher likelihood of falsely endorsing insecure (vs. secure) schema scenes. Attachment security moderated the association between crEA exposure and insecure schema-based false recognition. Findings suggest that interpersonal-affective semantic schemas include representations of parent-child interactions that may capture the quality of one's own attachment experiences and that these representations shape how children remember attachment-relevant narrative events. Findings are also consistent with the hypothesis that these affective semantic memories can be modified by later experiences. Moving forward, the approach taken in this study provides a means of operationalizing Bowlby's notion of internal working models within a cognitive neuroscience framework.

Behavioral research demonstrates a critical transition in preschooler's mental-state understanding (i.e., theory of mind; ToM), revealed most starkly in performance on tasks about a character's false belief (e.g., about an object's location). Questions remain regarding the neural and cognitive processes differentiating children who pass versus fail behavioral false-belief tasks and the extent to which there is continuity versus change in the ToM neural network. To address these questions, we analyzed event-related spectral power in the electroencephalogram (EEG) to investigate how preschoolers' neural activity during passive viewing of false-belief scenarios related to their explicit behavioral ToM performance. We found that neural activity during passive viewing of false-belief events (6-9 Hz EEG 'alpha' suppression in right temporoparietal [RTP] electrodes) strongly related to children's explicit ToM. However, children's RTP alpha suppression differed depending on their explicit behavioral ToM performance: Children who did better on a broad battery of standard ToM tasks and who passed explicit behavioral false-belief tasks showed greater RTP alpha suppression when the character's belief first became false (during the 'location-change' event); whereas children who did worse on the ToM battery and who failed explicit behavioral false-belief tasks showed greater RTP alpha suppression only later when they could evaluate the character's behavior in the context of prior events (during the 'active-search' event). Findings shed light on what differentiates preschoolers who pass versus fail explicit false-belief tasks and raise questions about how to interpret existing neuroscience data from ToM tasks across infancy to adulthood.

Language disorder (LD), as a public health concern, has received increasing attention from researchers. This study provides an overview of the knowledge domain of LD research and unveils the thematic patterns and emerging trends. A total of 8,649 articles on LD from 2003 to 2022 were collected from WoS and CiteSpace was employed for data analysis. The study focuses on temporal and geographic distribution, top journals, categories, authors, and co-citation analyses of references. The findings indicate that: (1) LD is of most concern in the fields of linguistics, rehabilitation, audiology and speech-language pathology, psychology, and neuroscience; (2) there is a dominance of the USA and England in LD publications; (3) the main thematic patterns include identification of language problems, neurogenetic mechanisms, diagnostic markers, cognitive mechanisms, auditory processing, and motor speech disorder; (4) the emerging trends include criteria and terminology for language problems, cognitive mechanisms, neurobiological factors, diagnostic markers, the population design, and longitudinal design. Future trends suggest a continued interdisciplinary approach into potential origins of LD, integrating new theoretical insights from linguistics, psychology, neuroscience and genetics, and this integration is enhanced by the application of digital technologies and artificial intelligence for improved diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. This scientometric analysis provides valuable insights into the evolving landscape of LD research, underscoring the need for more intense collaboration and further investigations in the field of LD.

Introduction: Instructors assign grades to communicate to students how well they are learning the course content. However, students and instructors are often displeased with the process and outcome of grading. Statement of the Problem: We contend that conventional grading inadvertently detracts from student learning and simultaneously replicates systems of oppression in academia. We discuss Labor-Based Grading Contracts (LBGCs) as an alternative to conventional grading. Literature Review: We review the conceptual and empirical literature on LBGCs as an alternative method of assessing student work and extend its application to psychology and neuroscience courses. Teaching Implications: We present recommendations for implementing LBGCs and address common concerns instructors have about this approach. We also make a call for more research on LBGCs in psychology and neuroscience teaching and learning. Conclusion: LBGCs represent a promising shift in the purpose and approach to assessing student work and learning by centering laboring to learn and developing skills. LBGCs also create a more equitable grading structure for all students.

Purpose: The objective of this research is to investigate how brain-based learning (BBL) has been adopted in Indonesia and its influence on the overall learning experience. Design/Approach/Methods: This research employs a systematic literature review methodology, adhering to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses guidelines and utilizing the Scopus and Google Scholar databases. Out of 2198 articles initially identified, only 101 met the predetermined criteria, leading to subsequent content analysis. Findings: The findings indicate: (1) an upward trend in research activity from 2013 to 2019 followed by a decline from 2020 to 2024; (2) predominance of quasi-experimental approaches; (3) the relevance of BBL across various educational levels; (4) a focus on mathematics and science in research endeavors; and (5) the positive impact of BBL on diverse learning facets. Originality/Value: This study provides valuable insights for stakeholders keen on advancing BBL research, exploring novel avenues across different methodologies, educational domains, and expertise areas. Such endeavors foster innovation in BBL research, underscoring its beneficial role in enhancing the educational landscape in Indonesia.

This paper uses narrative inquiry, ethnographic observations, and philosophical consideration of phenomenology to explore the role of mindfulness training, specifically a yoga-based practice, in supporting resiliency, academic achievement, and holistic well-being. Holistic well-being has become a critical and significant area of focus in education as increasing stress, anxiety and depression are resulting in both mental and physical illness, causing a significant decrease in overall resiliency observed both in students and teachers. This problem has been compounded by COVID-19, increasing use of technology and social isolation (Kush, Badillo-Giocoechea, Musci, & Stuart, 2022). It is critical to seek ontological ways of being and epistemological opportunities that consider relationality and holism to deepen our understanding of the complexity of our human experience, individually and collectively. The purpose of this paper is to offer proactive considerations to achieve well-being in our increasingly complex and overwhelming educational environments by considering the lived experience of the author as a yoga practitioner, academic researcher, and classroom educator. It begins by exploring the concept of interconnectivity and reflection on lived experience, and then it establishes a working definition for both resiliency and yoga. It then connects the key concepts of yoga practice to educational neuroscience, curriculum, teaching, and learning. Finally, it explores practical applications to teaching and learning and future research to be considered regarding resiliency, yoga, and holistic well-being.

Frontiers pioneered an alternative model of publishing: Rather than libraries paying subscription fees to publishers to give library communities access to journals full of articles written, reviewed and edited (at no or modest cost to the publishers) by their own faculty, they instead charge the authors to publish articles that are then made freely available to the world. Some libraries responded by supporting faculty authors directly or negotiating fee reductions with Frontiers, and Frontiers also provides breaks to authors who do not have access to publishing funds. The enterprise has grown to over 170 journals across all fields of science, and the articles are highly cited. The Frontiers acceptance criteria is that the research be scientifically sound and cogently presented. The editor's view of potential impact or importance is disregarded. The public gets to decide on that.

Wireless electroencephalography (EEG) devices allow for recordings in contexts outside the laboratory. However, many details must be considered for their use. In this research, using a case study with a group of third-grade primary school students, we aim to show some of the potentialities and limitations of research with these devices in educational settings. Several balances are apparent in the development of these experiences: between the interests and possibilities of the research teams and the educational communities; between the distortion of life in the classrooms and the opportunities for collaboration between academia and practice; and between the budget and the ease of preparing the equipment and the usefulness of the collected data. Among their potentialities is the knowledge that they allow access to different cognitive and emotional processes, and the learning opportunity represented by the links between researchers and educational communities. Life in the classrooms is interrupted by these types of experiences, but this can be a cost that facilitates more integrated future developments that benefit teaching and learning processes.

Advances in neuro-technology provide new insights into how individual students learn in educational contexts. However, applying it poses challenges for teachers in natural settings. This paper presents an example of the use and applicability of eye-tracking technology in Higher Education. We worked with a sample of 20 students from three universities (Burgos and Valladolid in Spain and Miño in Portugal). The objectives were: (1) to determine whether there were significant differences in indicators of cognitive effort (FC, FD, SC, PD, VC) found with eye-tracking technology between students with and without prior knowledge; (2) to determine whether there were clusters of learning behavior patterns among students; and (3) to analyze differences in the visualization of behavior patterns. A quasi-experimental design without a control group and a descriptive design were used. The results indicated significant differences in learning outcomes between students with and without prior knowledge. In addition, two clusters were found in indicators of cognitive effort. Finally, a comparative analysis of learning behavior patterns between students in cluster 1 vs. cluster 2 was performed. Eye-tracking technology makes it possible to record large data about the learning process. However, using it in natural educational settings currently requires teachers to have technological and data mining skills.

Currently, classrooms are experiencing an increase in the number of schoolchildren with a diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Numerous studies propose, as an alternative to medication, the implementation of different neurotechnology in the classroom to improve the symptomatology and enhance the cognitive abilities of children with this diagnosis. This umbrella review aims to compile the scientific evidence that exists on the application of these techniques, as well as their implementation, in schools. A systematic review was carried out, following accepted recommendations (PRISMA), which included systematic reviews in English or Spanish, published in scientific journals, which deal with ADHD, apply some neurotechnology used in this population such as neurofeedback, transcranial stimulation (tDCS) or hyper scanning, and which refer to education or school. Fourteen systematic reviews were retained, which show that neurofeedback is the most widely used neurotechnology, although its actual implementation in school has been scarcely treated or only aimed to evaluate its efficacy. In second place, tDCS appears with a more clinical approach, while hyper scanning does not appear. Despite the promising experimental results, ecological studies proposing the effective implementation of these techniques in educational centers are necessary; on the other hand, the commitment to neuroeducation would entail the emergence of new professional figures.

Despite considerable progress made in educational neuroscience, neuromyths persist in the teaching profession, hampering translational endeavors. The initial wave of interventions designed to dispel educational neuromyths was predominantly directed at preservice teachers. More recent work in the field, reviewed here, has shifted its focus primarily to in-service teacher professional development interventions. We discuss various interventional approaches, including refutation texts embedded into a brief training in foundational neuroscience, personalized refutation texts, insightful reflections upon science of learning key concepts (e.g., brain plasticity), and immersive experiences within research groups, highlighting their strengths and limitations. The evolving nature of scientific knowledge, the imperative to respect educators' personal and professional sensitivities, as well as challenges posed by conceptual change, are also addressed. This narrative review underscores the need to bring neuromyth investigations into the classroom environment.

Access to high-quality early music education programs may mitigate the effects of poverty on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, but fundamental questions remain about the role of early educators in conveying these benefits. In the current study, we measured the basal or resting cortisol levels of 76 children (M[subscript age] = 4.17 years; 42% female) over the course of the school day while they attended a Head Start preschool that included early music education classes. The results of a series of hierarchical linear models (HLMs) indicated that child-directed music and movement activities during these classes were associated with lower levels of cortisol (relative to teacher-directed activities; B = -0.019, p = 0.013), as were higher quality teacher-child interactions (B = -0.018, p = 0.013); both associations were moderated by child age. We discuss the implications of these results for future educational neuroscience research that seeks to inform early education programs for young children placed at risk by poverty.

Self-regulation is an essential component of school readiness. Although in educational contexts self-regulation is typically defined in terms of volitional processes, it also encompasses the activity of neurophysiological systems, including the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). In a prospective longitudinal study, 102 preschoolers (M[subscript age] = 4.82 years; 52% female) completed two measures of volitional self-regulation (the gift-wrap task and a battery of EF tasks) at the beginning of their final preschool year, and then completed the Bracken School Readiness Assessment (BSRA) at year's end. Larger increases in parasympathetic function (indexed by respiratory sinus arrythmia, or RSA) during both the gift-wrap and EF tasks were correlated with better performance on the BSRA at levels approaching significance, and subsequent regression models that controlled for relevant covariates revealed robust associations between increases in RSA and improved BSRA performance (gift wrap: B = 5.49, p = 0.012; EF: B = 7.77, p = 0.001). We interpret these results in light of polyvagal theory and discuss their implications for incorporating measures of parasympathetic activity into future educational neuroscience research.

The concept of sustainability has been gaining prominence due to its social, economic, and environmental implications. The urgency surrounding this issue continues to mount as we strive to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda. To achieve these goals, it is imperative to harness scientific knowledge and innovative educational approaches. Pedagogical approaches can be a powerful ally to behavioral change, playing a decisive role in educating sustainable communities. Concurrently, neuroscientific basis has been used as a relevant tool to foster knowledge on human behavior, namely value attribution and decision-making. In this work, we emphasize the construction of 1-day workshops with high school students, focusing on neuro-based processes underlying sustainable choices. Several innovative pedagogical methods have been employed to encourage the development of critical knowledge and promote the adoption of more sustainable behavior. This article discusses the connection between sustainable consumption and neuroscience, highlighting the vital role of education in shaping the consciousness of responsible citizens. The diversity of educational activities, the stimulation of creativity, and critical thinking cannot only improve the acquisition of concepts but also contribute to the education of citizens who are informed and capable of making responsible and conscious decisions.

Responses are slower in two-choice tasks when either a previous stimulus feature or the previous response repeats than when all features repeat or all features change. Current views of action control posit that such partial repetition costs (PRCs) index the time to update a prior "binding" between a stimulus feature and the response or to resolve processing conflicts between retrieved and current features. However, violating a heuristic that stimulus feature repetitions and changes "signal" repetitions or changes of the previous response, respectively, may also contribute to such costs. To determine whether such relational codes affect performance, we compared PRCs in two- and four-choice tasks. While a stimulus feature repetition signals a response repetition in both tasks, a stimulus feature change signals a specific alternative response only in a two-choice task. Consistent with the signaling hypothesis, we observed similar complete repetition benefits in the two- and four-choice tasks but smaller complete change benefits in the four-choice task. We also investigated whether the smaller complete change benefit in the four-choice task--that is, the signaling effect--varies with the validity of the signal in the previous trial. In all four experiments, we observed a larger signaling effect after trials in which stimulus changes or repetitions corresponded to response changes or repetitions, respectively, than after trials in which stimulus changes did not correspond with response changes. We conclude that signaling contributes to PRCs, which indicates that bindings include relational codes.

Biomedical engineering (BME) is a multidisciplinary, constantly advancing field; as such, undergraduate programs in BME must continually adapt. Elective courses provide opportunities for students to select topic areas relevant to their interests or future careers. Specifically, laboratory courses allow experiential learning in specialized topics in a hands-on manner that is suitable and accessible to undergraduate students. In recent years, neural engineering has emerged as a research sub-specialty within BME, and students preparing to pursue careers in this field will require a broad range of fundamental and experiential training. We sought to demonstrate this possibility by implementing a neural tissue engineering module into an existing upper-level undergraduate biofabrication elective. Organoids, which are self-assembling aggregate cell culture models that mimic a tissue or organ in both function and structure, have been made more accessible by genetic tools and commercially available resources. These experimental tools can be incorporated into basic laboratory experiments to model neurological systems that are otherwise difficult to study. In this paper, we describe the execution of this new module in which teams followed an adapted protocol for producing human neural organoids and then designed and manufactured a 3D-printed 'solution' to a common problem in the fields of neural engineering and organoid research. Additionally, we include student feedback as well as advantages, disadvantages, and opportunities for improvement of this laboratory module in future implementations. Skills gained in this project-based setting could be beneficial in subsequent capstone design courses as well as translated into future courses or graduate research studies.

There has been intense debate within the autistic and autism communities about the use of autism biobanks -- repositories containing biological and phenotypic materials -- and of genomic autism research more broadly. Here, we sought to understand the views and experiences of those contributing to one specific biobank, the Australian Autism Biobank. We adopted a multi-informant approach, conducting semi-structured interviews with 77 people, including 18 autistic probands, 46 parents and seven siblings, all of whom donated material to the Biobank, as well as six researchers employed on the project. Specifically, we asked: what motivated participants and researchers to contribute to the Australian Autism Biobank? And how did they feel about their involvement in that process? We analysed the data using reflexive thematic analysis, adopting an inductive approach within an essentialist framework. We identified three themes, which revealed a wide diversity of viewpoints, including positive conceptualisations of autism linked to neurodiversity and more negative conceptualisations linked to hopes for the development of genetic screening and reproductive choice. These findings have implications for the meaning, value and future directions of autism science. This research has been conducted using the Australian Autism Biobank resource.

Neuroanatomy is a notoriously challenging subject for medical students to learn. Due to the coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic, anatomical education transitioned to an online format. We assessed student performance in, and attitudes toward, an online neuroanatomy assessment compared to an in-person equivalent, as a marker of the efficacy of remote neuroanatomy education. Participants in the National Undergraduate Neuroanatomy Competition (NUNC) 2021 undertook two online examinations: a neuroanatomically themed multiple-choice question paper and anatomy spotter. Students completed pre- and post-examination questionnaires to gauge their attitudes toward the online competition and prior experience of online anatomical teaching/assessment. To evaluate performance, we compared scores of students who sat the online (2021) and in-person (2017) examinations, using 12 identical neuroradiology questions present in both years. Forty-six percent of NUNC 2021 participants had taken an online anatomy examination in the previous 12 months, but this did not impact examination performance significantly (p > 0.05). There was no significant difference in examination scores between in-person and online examinations using the 12 neuroradiology questions (p = 0.69). Fifty percent of participants found the online format less enjoyable, with 63% citing significantly fewer networking opportunities. The online competition was less stressful for 55% of participants. This study provides some evidence to suggest that student performance is not affected when undertaking online examinations and proposes that online neuroanatomy teaching methods, particularly for neuroradiology, may be equally as effective as in-person approaches within this context. Participants perceived online examinations as less stressful but raised concerns surrounding the networking potential and enjoyment of online events.

Neuroeducation is characterized as a subarea of neuroscience that involves comprehending the teaching and learning processes and relating them to neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and neuropsychology. The inclusion of some aspects of the neuroscience of learning in teachers' and students' formation, applying them in teaching-learning environments, contributes to the quality of education and impacts students' quality of life and health. Thus, the POPNEURO outreach program performs interventions with students and teachers of low-income schools to disseminate neuroscience concepts, relating them to the students' daily lives. This study reports the impact of these actions, assessed 1 yr after their conclusion. The results showed that the long-term impact of the activities carried out is, in general, positive. Even 1 yr after the activities end, students demonstrate knowledge about the neuroscience themes and satisfaction with participating.

Scientific literature about neuromyths has proliferated in the last few years. However, there is a gap of knowledge around neuroedumyths. While neuromyths are based on hoaxes about the brain, neuroedumyths use neuroscientific concepts but state consequences for education that are false. This article presents, for the first time, research about neuroedumyths among teachers. This study has applied the innovative methodology of Public Lectures' Debates Analytics (PLDA), in its ex-post modality. This has meant the analysis, by the twelve participants interviewed in this research, of the conclusions of public lectures' debates on neuroscience and education. The results show the presence of four neuroedumyths among teachers: The brain needs to be bored to develop; Violence resides in masculine genes; Brain develops almost completely the first three years of life; and There are right-hemisphere students and left-hemisphere students. While neuromyths have been spread among teachers by trainers specialized in education but lacking scientific information about neuroscience, neuroedumyths have been spread among teachers by neuroscientists lacking scientific information on education. Differently to some previous studies which approached this problem as teachers' errors or ignorance, the results of our study show that the problem is the errors of some teachers' trainers.

Background: Many students struggle with mathematics difficulties, such as arithmetic problem-solving, intuitive geometry concepts and learning disabilities. Currently, there is an increasingly interesting in applying neuroscientific research paradigms to elucidate mathematical thinking and neural mechanisms that underlie academic achievement. On this matter, eye-tracking technology has been a valuable option for educational research. It provides a non-invasive and real-time measurement of participants' eye movements and pupil sizes during cognitive tasks. Moreover, the eye-tracker device is portable, allowing more ecological educational experimentations. Aim: Our main goals are to provide an overview and different opportunities for educational eye-tracking research to investigate mathematical thinking at schools. Setting: This study was conducted in Sao Bernardo do Campo, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Methods: This is a perspective article that briefly introduces the eye-tracking technique and describes its possible use in educational research. Results: We present the popular measures and the trends of this technology that could enable educational practitioners and scientists to apply the eye-tracking system to benefit teaching and learning mathematics in naturalistic research. Conclusion: The eye-tracking provides insights for innovative approaches to promote evidence-based practices and new interventions through self-directed learning and metacognition skills that could be helpful in mathematics education. Contribution: This article provides insight into eye-tracking system utility in educational research regarding the mathematics teaching-learning process.

The learning model should be able to improve student's learning abilities. The Brain-Based Whole Learning (BBWL) model is one of the alternative learning models that can improve students' retention achievement, supported by scientific literacy and concept mastery. This study aims to determine the effect of the BBWL model on students' scientific literacy, concept mastery, and retention. This research method was quasi-experimental, with a sample of four classes taken randomly. The total sample was 132 students in grade XI Science Specialization in Madrasah Aliyah Bengkulu who enrolled in Biology. The data were analyzed using the ANOVA test after the assumption test was carried out, namely the normality and data homogeneity test. The results showed an effect of the BBWL model on students' scientific literacy skills, concept mastery, and retention. There is a significant difference between the BBWL model with BBL, WBT, and control. Based on the study results, it can be concluded that the BBWL model can improve students' retention achievement by supporting the result of good scientific literacy and concept mastery.

The purposes of the study were 1) to investigate the effectiveness of integrated brain-based learning and skills training on grade 11 students' learning achievement in linear and quadratic functions 2) to compare the achievement of grade 11 students before and after using integrated brain-based learning and skills training, and 3) to study students' satisfaction with the integrated brain-based learning and skills training. The participants were 40 grade 11 students in a Thai public school selected by the cluster sampling method. Research instruments were 1) a learning management plan 2) skills training 3) a learning Achievement Test, and 4) a Satisfaction Questionnaire. Statistics used in data analysis were percentage, average, standard deviation, and paired samples t-test. The results of the study indicate that 1) the effectiveness of the integrated brain-based learning and skills training on grade 11 students' learning achievement in linear and quadratic functions, 2) the achievement on grade 11 students after learning with the learning management was significantly higher than before using the treatmen, and 3) students was satisfied with the learning processes during the implementation of the learning management plan. The result of the study contributes to the area of mathematics education as it presents an alternative instructional method that combines the benefits of teaching principles to teach a complicated concept in mathematics. Moreover, it illustrates how the two principles are integrated to form a learning management plan that could drive learners' learning process.

Inequality in education is a challenge that have persisted and still likely to persist for a long time in the field of education because students come into the classroom with different characteristics thus posing a great concern to the realization of classroom objectives. The use of adequate teaching strategy might break this limitation thereby making every student to engage in meaning learning. The two objectives of this study include (1) to investigate the effect of brain-based teaching (BBT) method on students' retention on the topic, heat energy (2) to investigate if self-efficacy influence physics students' retention on the topic, heat energy, when taught using brain-based teaching method. We adopt the design, pre-test post-test control group quasi experimental design for the investigation. The participants were 99 (experimental group, n= 46; control group, n=53) students and were selected from two schools in Ondo using random sampling technique. A researcher designed data collection tool titled heat energy test (HET) was used to collect data in this study. HET's validity was achieved by giving the draft to three science education experts and two secondary school physics teachers for validation. Both descriptive and inferential statistics (Mean, t-test. ANCOVA) were used for analysis. Brain-based teaching method significantly improved the retention of students in physics (heat energy) and also, self-efficacy did not influence physics students' retention in physics (heat energy). In conclusion, brain-based teaching method enhanced the retention of physics (heat energy) thus breaking the limitation posed by differences in the characteristics of the students.

Authors should attract readers to read their articles from the very beginning of the article; this is important because readers will stop reading an article if they are not sure that they will obtain new, interesting and important information from the article. This study aims to investigate the rhetorical moves found in a research article abstract (henceforth RAA) published in high-impact international journals and how authors employ a research gap strategy (henceforth RGS) in their article abstracts. One hundred abstracts were chosen from ten highimpact international journals in language-related fields (henceforth LRF) for this study. The results showed that the RAAs have at least 4 moves (Moves 2, 3, 4, and 5) while only 55 or 55% of them have an RGS in the abstracts. The most frequent RGS used by the authors was Strategy 2 and the least employed strategies were Strategy 1 and Strategy 4. This implies that, although publishing in high-impact international journals, authors in LRF tend not to use Strategy 1 (nonexistence or absence of research on a particular topic or aspect) and Strategy 4 (contrasting or conflicting previous research findings) in their RAAs but they may address these strategies in their article introductions.

This preliminary study aims to address situations such as high anxiety, stress, inability to focus, and physical burnout experienced by students in the exams made during the transition to a higher education process in the educational system. It also aims to contribute to the development of students' academic and social-emotional skills, in other words emotional literacy through mindfulness training. For this reason, the effects of neuroscience-based mindfulness training on pupils in the eleventh grade's levels of stress, anxiety, and positive and negative emotions were explored. Seven voluntarily recruited high school juniors in the 11th grade made up the study's sample. The study was conducted over the course of 4 weeks and 6 sessions with the children after school. Data gathering tools are congruent with mixed method research design. Data collection instruments of Positive and Negative Emotion Scale (PANAS), Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale adapted for high school students (DASS-42) and Mindfulness Scale for Adolescents were employed as pre and posttest measurements. The study also conducted pre- and post-interview forms to gather opinions from the students regarding the study. The results of the study revealed a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores of being non-judgmental subscale of the Adolescent Mindfulness Scale (p=0.023 <0.05) and the positive emotion subscale of the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (p=0.018 <0.05). However, there was no significant difference found in terms of stress and anxiety scores, as measured by the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-42). During the interviews with the students, it was reported that they were able to identify their emotions and had started to effectively manage stress. This finding supports the results regarding emotional regulation. Based on these findings, it is suggested that implementing mindfulness activities and integrating them into existing school programs could be beneficial. Such programs would assist students in managing their stress, regulating their emotions, and ultimately contribute to their overall learning experience, which is supposed to contribute to their academic and emotional literacy.

The current study aimed to explore the effect of Brain-Based Learning on students' intrinsic motivation (IM) to learn and perform in mathematics. Owing to the educational implications of Neuroscience, the researchers planned the mixed-methods experimental study with a convergent parallel research design. The participants were eighth-graders enrolled in a boy's public secondary school in the district Kasur of Pakistan in the academic year 2021-2022. Students were taught mathematics using the traditional lecture method in the baseline phase (A) and withdrawal phase (A). In contrast, in the treatment phase (B), they were taught mathematics with activities based on the BBL approaches and principles. The mathematics motivation scale and observation (field notes) were used to collect quantitative and qualitative data simultaneously. Data were analysed using one-way repeated measure ANOVA and thematic analysis. The researchers revealed that BBL significantly affects students' IM to learn and perform in mathematics. After qualitative analysis, it was found that visual story-telling, role-playing, i-Think maps, back-to-board, and Kick Me Poison Box are the most effective BBL-based activities which keep them engaged, provide emotional support and contribute to students' IM to learn and perform in mathematics. The teachers were suggested to develop BBL-based activities to teach mathematics and to influence students' psychology in the schools.

The purpose of this study is to examine effects of Brain-Based Learning (BBL) method on seventh grade students' metacognitive awareness. Concurrent nested mixed method was used in the study. Thirty 7th grade students (21 girls, nine boys) participated in this study voluntarily. The unit of "Structure and Properties of Matter" was taught using the BBL method for six weeks. Students' Notebooks, Strategy Evaluation Matrix and Regulatory Checklist, were used for qualitative data. Metacognition Scale was applied as a pre-posttest for quantitative data. According to the results, while there was no significant difference between the Metacognition Scale pre-test and post-test results, a significant difference was observed in Conditional Knowledge, which is the Knowledge of Cognition sub-dimension of the scale. The findings obtained from the Strategy Assessment Matrix show that the students use high-level strategies (Affective Strategy) and techniques (Attention Concentration), so the Brain-Based Learning approach increases students' metacognitive awareness. When the expressions in the Regulatory Checklist were examined, it was seen that as the process progressed, the awareness of the students increased and the strategies they used worked.

This paper examines how kaiako (teachers) view professional learning and development training (PLD) in structured literacy (SL) in a Maori-medium immersion context. Through interviews with kaiako in a kura kaupapa Maori (Maori-medium educational setting) who teach students in Years 1-6, and images of the literacy environment to capture some of the literacy practices in classrooms, participants share their perspectives on their PLD training. The findings revealed some of the difficulties kaiako face, such as limited resources and working within a standardisded curriculum, whilst attempting to implement changes based on their PLD training. The findings highlight the need for support from all stakeholders (including policy makers and the school leadership team) to successfully implement SL in Maori-medium settings. The need for further resources in Maori-medium settings and the challenge of making changes to a standardised curriculum also emerged from the study. Finally, the findings indicate some of the potential benefits of PLD in SL for Maori-medium educators and akonga (students), such as an understanding of how the brain learns to read, some of the key elements of reading success, and instructional principles for effective literacy instruction.
