More than a third of large organizations have some type of transformation program underway at any given time, and many launch one major change initiative after another. Though they kick off with a lot of fanfare, most of these efforts fail to deliver. Only 12% produce lasting results, and that figure hasn’t budged in the past two decades, despite everything we’ve learned over the years about how to lead change. Clearly, businesses need a new model for transformation. In this article the authors present one based on research with dozens of leading companies that have defied the odds, such as Ford, Dell, Amgen, T-Mobile, Adobe, and Virgin Australia. The successful programs, the authors found, employed six critical practices: treating transformation as a continuous process; building it into the company’s operating rhythm; explicitly managing organizational energy; using aspirations, not benchmarks, to set goals; driving change from the middle of the organization out; and tapping significant external capital to fund the effort from the start. - Abstract
Mediocratis is a social system in which individuals with average or substandard abilities hold positions of power or influence, ignoring the qualities or competencies that should be possessed to hold those positions. In daily life, both work, association and the context of Christian ministry, mediocracy is a challenge that must be seriously addressed because the dynamics of church life are developing rapidly. There are many people who choose to be mediocre when most of them are competent people, have a lot of talent and opportunities to advance or develop. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

FRAUD , *JUSTICE administration , *MEDIOCRITY , *JURISPRUDENCE , *QUALITY standards , *CONTRACTS - Abstract
Quality and mediocrity greatly affect financial transactions, whether in Islamic jurisprudence or legal systems, and are the basis of trust between contracting parties. This paper addressed the issue of quality and mediocrity comparing Islamic jurisprudence and the Saudi system, and also examined how the Saudi legal system deals with this issue. The importance of the topic is evident in clarifying the role of quality and mediocrity and their impact on financial transactions, and the extent to which Islamic jurisprudence and the Saudi legal system concern themselves with this role and impact. It answered questions including: What is the jurisprudential impact of the concepts of quality and mediocrity on financial transactions in Islamic jurisprudence? How does this conform to the Saudi legal system? To what extent are the jurisprudential principles related to quality and mediocrity applied in the current Saudi system? The paper aimed to analyze quality and mediocrity in Islamic jurisprudence, study the impact of quality and mediocrity on financial transactions, and compare the Saudi system with Islamic jurisprudence. The method used in the study varies between induction, analysis and comparison. The paper concluded that quality plays a vital role in Islamic jurisprudence and the Saudi system alike, and contributes to enhancing trust between contracting parties, protecting their rights, and preventing fraud and deception. It recommended consistently making awareness campaigns for individuals and companies about the importance of quality in financial transactions, setting clear and specific criteria that regulate the standard of quality and mediocrity, and adhering to them. The context for this study is the volatile, turbulent, and disruptive environment that affects higher education everywhere. A plethora of key problems facing higher education are identified. Among these are escalating costs and declining public support for higher education. This means that international education must compete with other possible priorities, such as strengthening disciplines or making campuses more attractive to prospective students. The basic aim of this paper is to develop a set of best practices to promote excellence and rigor in international higher education. In that sense, this could be called action research. This could also be considered the story of how to develop excellence and rigor in international higher education. The major methodology for this study is multiple case studies research and mixed methods research. Another method is reflective participant experience based on the author's seven decades of engagement with the internationalization of higher education. Both value premises and positionality, which might influence the research are openly shared. In terms of theoretical foundations, key genres of internationalization are identified and described, such as critical, comparative, and comprehensive internationalization. Then, in terms of results, in the next quantitative section of the paper, eight statistical tables are shared that show the current status of international higher education, primarily in the U.S., while also including a table showing the most international universities in the world. Then, in the next qualitative part of the study, 11 exemplary cases are presented, such as CAMPUS Asia, Volunteers in Asia (VIA), and the International Cooperative Learning Project. These projects involve a total of about 20 countries. The criteria for selection were factors such as depth, sustainability, and impactful, transformative learning. The paper concludes with an articulation of the best practices to achieve excellence in international education and the principle that true liberal education is inherently international and intercultural. The purpose of article's study is to discover Logos phenomenon which is present in the nature of thinking using an empirical method in the value system of F. Mathews & G. Berkeley from the point of view of modern ethics, historical experience, modern psychology and culture of ecology. "Logos" is considered as a segment of the field of thinking, a certain event in the field of meaning. The meaning of "Logos" as an event in the ontology of F. Mathews is considered from a metaphysical point of view and acquires a special semantic value in the context of G. Berkeley philosophy. In the space-time continuum, "Logos" exists in a moving field of meanings and is opposed to "Nonthought." In the course of history, the manifestation of "Logos" was absorbed by everyday life and mediocrity, but F. Mathews and G. Berkeley are trying to prevent the disappearance of "Logos" by creating an "Ecological Model of Thinking", revealing perception from internal semantic structures towards natural phenomena. An ecological model of thinking can prevent the formation of a "perceptual dead zone" where human genius is devalued by self-centered mediocrity. The phenomenon of the integrity of the "Logos" is an ethical expression of intuitive perception. The causes and consequences of "ontological inertia" are also revealed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nigeria as a Nation has been experiencing socio-political convulsion on the basis of religion and ethnicity. The independent and post independent Nigeria is not an exception from this hiccup. This paper investigated religion and ethnicity as stratagems for the triumph of mediocrity in Nigeria thus reconnecting the disconnect through federalism. The research has adopted both descriptive and analytical methods of investigation. As a diverse and heterogeneous nation, the Northerners have consistently asserted their dominance and hegemony over others, as if Northerners are birthed with Nigeria political power. In their ethno-religious exhibition, other religions are subservient, and in their own view, the very least believer in their religion is far better than the greatest in other religion(s). The findings revealed that the aftermath of this promotion of religion and ethnicity in the Nigerian politics is the triumph of mediocrity, incompetent, unpopular and irrational candidates. The paper, therefore, recommends federalism as a means for reconnecting the disconnect between religion and ethnicity in Nigeria.

RELIGIONS ,GREEKS ,ANCIENT philosophy ,PRAXIS (Process) ,GOD in Judaism ,MEDIOCRITY - Abstract
This article examines the influence of Greek religion on modern thought, discussing the evolution of the perception of the Greeks and their contributions to art and philosophy. It explores the two main aspects of Greek religion, the Olympic and the Orphic, and how they continue to shape modern thinking. The text delves into various concepts and ideas related to Greek mythology and philosophy, such as the role of science, the separation of art, the concept of hybris, the distinction between spirit and matter, the use of symbols, the search for truth and salvation, and the importance of harmony and enthusiasm. The article suggests that these ideas have influenced Western thinking and continue to shape our understanding of the world. It also discusses the fusion of art and science as a threat, potentially influenced by concepts inherited from Greek religion. The text concludes by encouraging self-reflection and the pursuit of wisdom. [Extracted from the article]

MEDIOCRITY - Abstract
When Henry VIII, or All Is True was staged at Shakespeare's Globe in London in May 2022, the production elicited a lukewarm review from Arifa Akbar in the Guardian. The theatre critic stated that the play itself feels slightly disjointed, perhaps because it was not the Bard's work alone but a collaboration with John Fletcher. There is now the added authorial hand of Hannah Khalil, who edits the text to accentuate women's roles and adds some well-known lines from Shakespeare's other works. Where this should enrich the drama, it exposes its faultlines. Akbar's comment is revealing, and particularly so in the context of this issue's engagement with the varieties of early modern dramatic collaboration. It not only mentions several collaborative practices used in early modern theatre which are explored in the articles brought together for this special issue – co-authorship, adaptation and quotation, to name but three – but also reflects a profound unease towards collaboration in twenty-first-century culture. Henry VIII, Akbar infers, is an imbalanced play because Shakespeare wrote it with somebody else rather than by himself. Akbar also implies that the relationship between these two authors has to be hierarchical, with Shakespeare (aka the inevitably capitalised, solitary 'Bard') as the better and Fletcher as the lesser playwright, who is responsible for the play's alleged shortcomings. A similarly dismissive attitude towards Fletcher is reflected in the review's title, which refers to Henry VIII as 'little-seen Shakespeare' as a form of skewed advertisement (this is Shakespeare, but not as we know him), thus erasing Fletcher's co-authorship completely, only to eventually present his name by way of explaining the play's mediocrity. The review also suggests that the play's merit has been further reduced by Hannah Khalil's contemporary adaptation, which adds too much 'wokeness' (the accentuation of women's roles) as well as too much middle-class Shakespeare (the well-known lines recognisable for those who know their Shakespeare inside out). In short, the review relies on a hierarchy well established in (traditional) literary criticism: Shakespeare is the epitome of playwrighting, and his solo-authored plays are the gold standard of early modern English drama; his co-authored plays are diminished by the lesser dramatic ability of his collaborators (where Shakespeare is sprezzatura, Fletcher is learned rhetoric); adapters have even more limited authorial skills and, therefore, an adapted play is a 'lesser' play because of the adapter's 'interference'. As Akbar's review showcases, the notion of dramatic co-authorship, especially Shakespeare's, is still routinely met with scepticism and disdain in public discourse. Rather than enriching a play, three cooks (Shakespeare, Fletcher, Khalil) have spoiled the broth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

LITERARY form , *SOCIAL criticism , *METAPHOR , *MEDIOCRITY , *INTERWAR Period (1918-1939) - Abstract
Accused, on the one hand of the danger of scarcity, and, on the other, of the danger of marginalization, children’s literature in the interwar period is often associated with clichéd labels, such as “minor literature”, without the latter being understood in the direction proposed by Deleuze. On the contrary, the meaning of the term is strictly pejorative, and it marks the dissolution into mediocrity of the texts recovered from the above-mentioned category. So, the intention of the present paper is to propose a case study of the novel Europolis written by Jean Bart, aiming to identify some interpretative tools detected at the level of the text with the aim of reinstating the status of this literary genre on the canonical stage. The poporanist ideological direction assumed by the author in all his writings, the unusual linguistic images given by the nicknames attributed to the characters (Penelope, the American, etc.), their actions, enhanced and predictable like in a soap opera –all contribute to the generation of necessary aspects in the panorama of a motley community subjected to social criticism when read in a subversive key. The construction of the narrative context around the port of Sulina involves a metaphor of openness (to otherness, various cultural/social inflections, etc.), but is dismantled by the author by means of actors regulated by the preliminaries of a capitalist society, against which the writing is reactionary, given the final failure of the character (see the curiosity aroused by the return of the character called the American, suspected of possessing an enormous fortune, a situation debunked at the end of the novel). Thus, the novel Europolis written by Jean Bart creates a pre-text, through entertainment and an engaging tone, to highlight the shortcomings of a collective fascinated by all that the West can offer, but unable to solve its own social and cultural emergencies, because of an organic hypocrisy which is ultimately sufficient for the final decline of all the characters. The colony is one of the important research objects in microbial technology, which can realize the evaluation of food safety level, environmental pollution degree, therapeutic effect of medical drugs, and characteristics of agricultural fungicides. Traditional colony image research requires human visual observation and statistics, which will result in low work efficiency and high work intensity. Colony image edge detection is an important basis for colony image research. Traditional edge detection operators cannot meet the accuracy requirements of the detection results. This paper proposes a Mediocrity Ant Colony Algorithm (MACA) to achieve edge detection of colony images. MACA combines the mediocrity rule, uses empirical functions to establish a pheromone database that can be used as a pheromone update reference table, adopts the Chebyshev distance as a weight that affects pheromone update, and combines heuristic information acquisition with maximum variance classification method and local path weights. The method that jointly affects the ant transition probability incorporates feedback rules for obtaining path weights to improve the edge detection effect. By performing edge detection simulation experiments on six colonies of three types of bacteria, and comparing with the classic edge detection operators and two classic ant colony edge detection algorithms, the detection performance, detection results and running time are proposed. The stability and accuracy of MACA algorithm is better than other methods, and the ideal results of the colony image edge detection by the ant colony algorithm are obtained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

GENERATIVE artificial intelligence ,MEDIOCRITY ,HIGHER education - Abstract
This editorial reflects on James Joyce's modernist novel Ulysses, first published 100 years ago in 1922. We reconstruct Ulysses's revolutionary redefinition of the novel genre, its critical reception, and the immense challenges Joyce faced in writing, printing, and publishing the work. Narrating the genesis of Ulysses is a celebration of human ingenuity and perseverance in the face of daunting obstacles. We contrast Joyce's brilliant literary achievement with the comparatively inferior outputs of much-hyped generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) chatbots. We discuss how the excessive caution and censorship exhibited by leading generative AI systems like ChatGPT undermine the free exchange of ideas, in stark contrast to the liberation of expression embodied by Ulysses. Finally, we consider the implications of these insights for effective teaching practices and visionary leadership in higher education, emphasising the vital role of cultivating broad intellectual engagement and critical thinking skills among students and faculty. Our editorial also provides an overview of the many human-created gems in our latest journal issue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Materialist science does not see that consciousness is causal and fundamental. In contrast, as the body of nonlocal consciousness research has become more rigorous, more meticulous, what is notable about the criticism is its growing mediocrity. This paper discusses why the resistance to incorporating consciousness in science is occurring. It also discusses the history of how nonlocal consciousness was exiled from science in the first place. And why. In the pre-Christian world thinking about consciousness and its role in physical reality could not have been more mainstream. The idea of nonlocal consciousness and that all life is interconnected and interdependent, and that space-time itself arises from consciousness, not consciousness from space-time, is not a new idea. In the past based on a kind of empirical observational science nonlocal consciousness was so well accepted for millennia it was explicitly put to use in the service of the state for governmental planning. The Egyptians, the Greeks, the Etruscans, the Romans, the Maya, all these cultures and others have maintained institutions whose function was to create a cadre of what today we would call remote viewers, often boys and girls, whose task was to provide the kind of practical guidance one can get today from remote viewing. Oracles were honored. The origins of materialism are presented and discussed and properly placed in their relationship to the Roman Catholic Church. The history of how denialism developed is discussed, and the difference between skepticism and denialism is defined. The emergence process of a new paradigm incorporating non-physiologically based consciousness is described, and examined in Kuhnian terms. And, finally, the implications of this new paradigm are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper attributes to Nietzsche a theory of cultural development according to which pyramid societies—steeply hierarchical societies following a unified morality—systematically alternate with motley societies, which emerge when pyramid societies encounter other cultures or allow their strict mores to relax. Motley societies contain multiple value systems due to individual innovation or intercultural contact, and are less stringent in dictating individuals' roles. Consequently, many people are torn between incompatible values and lack direction, so they are drawn to a morality of mediocrity, which offers the modest goals of comfort and conformity. However, the need to mediate between conflicting values also tends to yield exceptional individuals who create new values, and can reshape the society into a new pyramid society governed by those values. I argue that Nietzsche favors neither type of society at the expense of the other, but believes the alternation itself is valuable: a pyramid society develops a value system to its full potential; then, when it encounters alternative values, the extraordinary individuals in the resulting motley society synthesize the competing systems into a fuller vision of human flourishing. Mediocrity as a concept in education has frequently been used by modern-day and historical actors to express discontent with the status quo of pedagogy and schooling. Despite its pervasiveness in discourse, however, the concept has largely evaded academic scrutiny, particularly in terms of its historical development in the years leading up to its appearance in the famous United States Government report, A Nation at Risk. This paper aims to construct a conceptual history of mediocrity in American education through the analysis of newspaper articles from The New York Times, to explore how the concept developed amidst the rise of neoliberalism and meritocratic discourse in education. This study finds that the concept of mediocrity between 1971 and 1983 had a number of nuanced conceptualisations and played a pivotal role in developing meritocratic discourse on natural talent and ability, as well as neoliberal and marketised narratives in public debates over educational equality, business approaches to education, and performance pay for teachers. These findings allow educational researchers to reflect meaningfully on the ways that language shapes, and is shaped by, historical developments in education, and provides layers of meaning and context to oft-used educational concepts that are crucial for the authentic evaluation of our modern education systems. The article discusses a book titled "Education and the Body in Europe (1900-1950)" edited by S. Polenghi, A. Németh, and T. Kasper. The book explores the historical period of the early 20th century and the various programs and tensions surrounding the education of the body during that time. It examines themes such as the link between the aesthetic and ethical dimensions of the body, the concept of transcendence and pushing beyond physical limits, the relationship between the body and the community, the perception of the body in relation to space, the dynamics of power over the human body, and gender differences in bodily education. The book provides valuable insights into the history of education and its connection to broader economic, social, and political contexts. [Extracted from the article]

The article contributes to the Polish tradition of research using personal memoirs to illustrate the experience of everyday life. The authors analyze the experiences of middle-class representatives based on data collected through a nationwide competition for a diary of an unemployed person. The diarists experienced unemployment for at least one month between 2016 and 2017. The article shows the fragility of middle-class status, one that is difficult to achieve and easy to lose. The Polish middle class is under constant threat of being "washed away" by a wave created by low wages, poor working conditions, insufficient savings, credit burdens, and the trap of comparing oneself with other representatives of the middle class. The article illustrates the mediocrity of middle-class life--the disillusionment with the quality of life in the middle of the social structure based on deficits in health and psychological well-being and disruptions in social relations. Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives are critical for fostering growth, innovation, and collaboration in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM). This article focuses on four key topics that have impacted many Black individuals in STEMM: know-your-place aggression, environmental microaggressions, peer mediocrity, and code-switching. We provide a comprehensive background on these issues, discuss current statistics, and provide references that support their existence, as well as offer solutions to recognize and address these problems in the STEMM which can be expanded to all historically underrepresented individuals.

Although Le Pion sur l’échiquier (1934) was greeted by critics as a generally unsuccessful book, Némirovsky developed a thematic and formal network in this novel that was likely to lead to a generational meditation on the malaise of the post-war period. The story of Christophe Bohun, an anonymous clerk who hates his ordinary life, departs from the Russian-Jewish vein that had dominated Némirovsky’s novels up to that point and focuses instead on a French petty-bourgeoisie plagued by social and existential unhappiness. In this way, the hero's bleak inner landscape blends seamlessly into the picture of an age tormented by the assertion of a civilisation so intrusive that it disrupts the relationship between the subject and the world.

As scientists start to adopt machine learning (ML) as one research tool, the security of ML and the knowledge generated become a concern. In this paper, I explain how supervised ML can be improved with better data ontology, or the way we make categories and turn information into data. More specifically, we should design data ontology in such a way that is consistent with the knowledge that we have about the target phenomenon so that such ontology can help us make the inductive leap. I do so by thinking through a thought experiment, Goodman's New Riddle of Induction (Fact, fiction, and forecast, Harvard University Press, 1955). Goodman's riddle helps flesh out three problems of induction: (1) the problem of equal goodies, that there are often too many equally good inductive results given the same data; (2) the problem of diverging performance, that these equally good results can give opposite predictions in the future; and (3) the problem of mediocrity, that when averaged across all equally possible datasets and tasks, no inductive algorithm outperforms any other. I show that all these three problems are manifested as real obstacles in ML practice, namely, the Rashomon effect (Breiman in Stat Sci 16(3):199–231, 2001), the problem of underspecification (D'Amour et al. in J Mach Learn Res, 2020, https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2011.03395), and the No Free Lunch theorem (Wolpert in Neural Comput 8(7):1341–90, 1996, https://doi.org/10.1162/neco.1996.8.7.1341). Lastly, I argue that proper data ontology can help mitigate these problems and I demonstrate how using concrete examples from climate science. This research highlights the links between philosophers' discussions of induction and implications in ML practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this essay, I defend sport as a (mere) hobby in contrast to sport as a 'mutual quest for excellence through challenge'. With the assistance of ideas found in the novel Don Quixote, I raise questions about the clarity, merit, and sufficiency of the quest-for-excellence apologetic. I employ arguments made by James and Dewey to support my alternate defense of sporting activity as a hobby, that is, as 'the gentle pursuit of a modest competence'. Based on the work of Wu, my defense stands as both a philosophic argument and a cultural critique. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MEDIOCRITY , *ORIGIN of life , *ASTROBIOLOGY , *EXTRATERRESTRIAL beings - Abstract
The probability that life spontaneously emerges in a suitable environment (abiogenesis) is one of the major unknowns in astrobiology. Assessing its value is impeded by the lack of an accepted theory for the origin of life, and is further complicated by the existence of selection biases. Appealing uncritically to some version of the 'Principle of Mediocrity' – namely, the supposed typicality of what transpired on Earth – is problematic on empirical or logical grounds. In this paper, we adopt a Bayesian statistical approach to put the inference of lower bounds for the probability of abiogenesis on a rigorous footing, based on current and future evidence. We demonstrate that the single datum that life has appeared at least once on Earth merely sets weak constraints on the minimal probability of abiogenesis. In fact, the a priori probability assigned to this event (viz. optimistic, pessimistic, or agnostic prior) exerts the strongest influence on the final result. We also show that the existence of a large number of habitable worlds does not necessarily imply, by itself, a high probability that life should be common in the universe. Instead, as delineated before, the choice of prior, which is subject to uncertainty (i.e. admits multiple scenarios), strongly influences the likelihood of life being common. If habitable worlds are uncommon, for an agnostic prior, a deterministic scenario for the origin of life might be favoured over one where abiogenesis is a fluke event. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

If the origin of life is rare and sensitive to the local conditions at the site of its emergence, then, using the principle of mediocrity within a multiverse framework, we may expect to find ourselves in a universe that is better than usual at creating these necessary conditions. We use this reasoning to investigate several origin of life scenarios to determine whether they are compatible with the multiverse, including the prebiotic soup scenario, hydrothermal vents, delivery of prebiotic material from impacts, and panspermia. We find that most of these scenarios induce a preference toward weaker-gravity universes, and that panspermia and scenarios involving solar radiation or large impacts as a disequilibrium source are disfavored. Additionally, we show that several hypothesized habitability criteria which are disfavored when the origin of life is not taken into account become compatible with the multiverse, and that the emergence of life and emergence of intelligence cannot both be sensitive to disequilibrium production conditions.
