Abstract This paper is meant as an introduction to a special issue on circulating mathematics via journals, from ca 1850 to 1950. It intends to study the practices, actors, places and institutions involved in mathematical circulation. Journals constitute one of the main carriers of mathematical knowledge and hence the main vehicle for its circulation. The focus of the paper is on 'mathematical' (understood very broadly) journals and the various forms of interplay between them. In order to understand and analyse the processes of circulation that are an important feature of mathematical production, the interactions that take place between journals are considered across different scales, from local practices and representations to more global appraisals. We shall use the notion of circulation space in order to break down the representations of the mathematical world in terms of the centres and peripheries suggested by the geographical area, with its massive publishing centres at different times – Paris, London, Berlin, Leipzig, New York, etc. Besides the geographical dimensions, the focus is on connections between journals, polarisations, competition, rivalries, etc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract The merger of various Nordic mathematical journals in 1953 into Mathematica Scandinavica (for research) and into Nordisk Matematisk Tidsskrift (for the more elementary topics, from 1979 NORMAT) confirmed increasing cooperation between matured Scandinavian mathematical communities. The merger originated from practical considerations including the wish to have a critical mass for economically viable publications. The present paper presents the basic steps in the development of several Scandinavian mathematical journals from 1859, the year of the foundation of the first general mathematical journal in a Scandinavian language, the Danish Mathematisk Tidsskrift , through various converging and diverging tendencies, towards the events of the year 1953. Abstract While there were a few mathematical journals aimed at teachers and students as early as the 1840s, it was only in the late 19th century that they became more numerous in Europe. This article is based on the analysis of a corpus of European mathematical journals published between the 1860s and World War I, selected in the first place because they were aimed at high school teachers and high school or/and first two years university students, which are often referred to as "intermediate journals". All these journals had focused on the teaching of mathematics and, as such, they were shaped by the educational context of the country in which they were published. However, leafing through theses journals, one is struck by the fact that the mathematics they published was in fact highly commensurable, and can see that they were the locus of transnational exchanges on mathematical knowledge. This article shows that several aspects of "internationalisation" were in fact at stake in mathematical journals for students: making knowledge from elsewhere available and of publicizing to the whole world the mathematics produced in one country; making people from different countries collaborate. Finally, it focuses on the effects of transnational exchanges between journals for teachers and students: what was the mathematical knowledge that was circulated through them, and in what respect was it different from that published in other mathematical journals? Abstract In 1884, Giovan Battista Guccia founded first the Circolo Matematico di Palermo and then some years later its journal, the Rendiconti del Circolo Matematico di Palermo. Although historians of mathematics have published a number of works on the Circolo and the Rendiconti , there are very few systematic studies on mathematics in Sicilian periodicals. In our paper, we shall investigate the relationships between the "international" Rendiconti and the "local" proceedings published by the Sicilian academies located in Catania, Messina, and Palermo. What is the image of mathematics that emerges from these journals? What is the presence of Sicilian mathematicians among the authors in the different cases? Abstract In 1900 Christoforo Alasia De Quesada began to work on the editorial project of a new journal Le Matematiche Pure ed Applicate. This journal had as its aim the improvement of scientific knowledge of teachers, to stimulate them in studies and researches. Its creation was encouraged by Henri Brocard, who was also influential in defining Alasia's editorial strategy. Highly functional to the purposes of Alasia's journal was a network of collaborators, which left traces of his work also in other journals. The presence in his network of many editors of journals, like Laisant, Lemoine, Allardice, De Galdeano, Greenstreet, Peano and Mansion, lead us to make some more general considerations on the circulation of journals' editorial models. Abstract The Special Mathematics Library of Turin University, founded in 1883, was fundamental in the development of two research schools under the leadership of C. Segre and G. Peano. First founded to house a growing collection of international journals acquired through both purchase and exchange from publishing centres worldwide, it later evolved into a 'presence library' modelled on the legendary Lesezimmer in Göttingen. A systematic study of the library's history and its directors' policies provides interesting insights into the various aspects of the international circulation of journals and their use at different times and in various contexts in Turin (Turin Academy of Sciences, Società di cultura, national university library, etc.). This study investigates the extent to which open access (OA) publishing models affect French researchers’ attitudes. Research questions were: What place does OA have in attitudes of French researchers in mathematics, biology, and computer science? Are French researchers aware of new publishing models? Do they publish in these new outlets? What funds do they use? What kind of feedback and satisfaction can we observe? We used a quantitative approach to identify structural trends. From April to May 2015, the authors gathered empirical data (interviews, training, and meetings) on researchers’ opinions and understanding of OA publishing models to define the variables and build up the questionnaire that was sent out in June 2015. The findings of the survey demonstrated that, when choosing journals to publish their articles, researchers did not rate OA as a criterion but rather impact, prestige, and symbolic recognition. Publishing OA articles is only in its first stages in the publishing practices of researchers. Lack of policy, prescriptions, and lack of rewards explain why OA is not a factor that determines the publishing strategies of French researchers. The researchers who take the risk of OA publishing are biologists, the older and more experienced researchers, and those who are members of editorial teams. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
