They are examined in a literary, (religious-/tradition-) historical and theological perspective. Special emphasis is given to phenomena of transforming authority and leadership claims in exilic/post-exilic times. Hence, the volume contributes to biblical theology and sheds new light on the redaction/reception history of the texts. Not least, it provides valuable insights into the history of religious and/or political “authorities” in Israel and Early Judaism(s).

Too often, all oppressed people in America are lumped together under the moniker'people of color,'as if each group's experience under the yoke of systemic racism has the same economic and social repercussions. Nichtsdestoweniger gilt die unterschiedliche Rollenzuschreibung von levitischen Priestern in der deuteronomisch-deuteronomistischen Literatur bzw. von Priestern und Leviten in den priesterschriftlich geprägten Texten als entscheidend für die Verhältnisbestimmung beider Literaturbereiche. Die vorliegende Studie untersucht unter Einbeziehung der neuesten Diskussion zur Gestaltwerdung des Enneateuch konsequent literarkritisch die einschlägigen Passagen der Hebräischen Bibel, um den Weg von den levitischen Priestern des Deuteronomiums zu Levi, dem Priester, in den Schriftrollen vom Toten Meer nachzeichnen zu können. Auf diese Weise soll eine gesicherte Quellenbasis für künftige historische Rückfragen gewonnen werden, wobei sich die große Dynamik der Diskussion um die Stellung der Leviten vor allem in nachexilischer Zeit zeigt. Zugleich können die Ergebnisse der Arbeit als ein Beitrag zur aktuellen Debatte um die Entstehung des Pentateuch dienen.

The ambivalent tendencies in the Joseph figure form the point of departure for Philo in using it for examining structures of tyrannical and ideal rule. Philo's knowledge of Greek-Hellenistic philosophy and his understanding of the Torah enables him to reflect upon the political character on different levels. Thus the tension between both treatises can be interpreted as a conscious portrayal of effective and of tyrannical rule. At the same time Philo develops a concept of government out of the ambivalences of the Joseph figure, which, on the basis of the understanding of the Torah, liberates political action from dependencies and points out universal guidelines for action and the authorities responsible for control of them.

Susan Mathew examines the structures of mutuality in Romans, to shed light on the issue of women's leadership in Pauline theology. Mathew begins by analyzing the general form of greetings in the Pauline letters, to shed light on the specific form of the greetings in Rom 16.1-16. Mathew then couples this with analysis of the leadership of women in the Greco-Roman world showing that women's leadership roles in the Pauline churches were part of this wider culture. This provides a basis from which to show that the women named in Romans 16.1-16, display Paul's acknowledgment of some women associates, and point to relationships of mutuality in the greetings. A study of Romans 12-13 helps to apprehend the model of mutuality exemplified in the greetings. Finally, the contextual application of mutuality in the community as mutual welcoming and mutual up-building (Romans 14-15) is brought into focus. This enables Mathew to draw together the strands of the Pauline ethos of mutuality, which encourages the leadership roles of women in the greetings at the end of Romans.

He argues that these pericopes promote the leadership integrity of the apostles by attempting to win the support of the women disciples and Jesus'family and then, through Judas'excommunication, extirpation, and replacement, to win that of the 120 disciples.
