The gross pathology and the histopathological alterations identified in juvenile specimens of the European hake (Merluccius merluccius), one of the most important target species of commercial fisheries in the northwest Mediterranean, are described. A qualitative and semi‐quantitative histological approach was performed in specimens from 2007 and 2019. Prevalence and mean intensity of parasites and histopathological changes were calculated in both years. No macroscopic alterations were found in any organ but several parasites (e.g., copepods, nematodes, digeneans) were detected. Microscopically, alterations identified in gills included foci of inflammation and hyperplasia (present in 77.38% of hakes from both years), extensive hyperplasia (33.33%), and inflammation (16.65%) that were potentially related to the mechanical effects of monogeneans and copepods, cysts of unknown etiology (62.69%), and lamellar inflammation associated to Aporocotyle spinosicanalis eggs (8.33%). Granulomas and inflammatory focus were detected in the liver, spleen, and stomach, apparently associated with the presence of nematodes. Coelozoic myxosporean parasites were detected within the renal tubules (66.66%). Most of the pathologies detected were similar to those described in other gadoid species (i.e., Gadus morhua) and were usually related to the presence of ecto and endoparasites. The handshake is the most acceptable gesture of greeting in many cultures throughout many centuries. To date, robotic arms are not capable of fully replicating this typical human gesture. Using multiple sensors that detect contact forces and displacements, we characterized the movements that occurred during handshakes. A typical human-to- human handshake took around 3.63 s (SD = 0.45 s) to perform. It can be divided into three phases: reaching (M = 0.92 s, SD = 0.45 s), contact (M = 1.96 s, SD = 0.46 s), and return (M = 0.75 s, SD = 0.12 s). The handshake was further investigated to understand its subtle movements. Using a multiphase jerk minimization model, a smooth human-to- human handshake can be modelled with fifth or fourth degree polynomials at the reaching and return phases, and a sinusoidal function with exponential decay at the contact phase. We show that the contact phase (1.96 s) can be further divided according to the following subphases: preshake (0.06 s), main shake (1.31 s), postshake (0.06 s), and a period of no movement (0.52 s) just before both hands are retracted. We compared these to the existing handshake models that were proposed for physical human-robot interaction (pHRI). Introduction: The aims of the present study were to evaluate postural balance performance of the subjects on the time-restricted feeding (TRF) and reveal the effect of TRF on the vestibular system by comparing the results to those of traditional daily dietary (DD) condition. Methods: Sixteen adults (3 males, 13 females; mean age: 25.4 ± 4 years) who had experienced at least 1 month of TRF were included in the study. The Sensory Organization Test (SOT) and Head-Shake SOT (HS-SOT) – which evaluate proprioceptive, visual, and vestibular systems – were performed on TRF and DD conditions via the Computerized Dynamic Posturography system. Results: Significant differences were obtained between TRF and DD situations in SOT-5 (p = 0.008), SOT-6 (p = 0.01), and HS-SOT5 (p = 0.007) conditions in which the vestibular system dominated. Conclusion: We revealed that TRF has an effect on postural balance in the absence of proprioceptive and visual systems. This feeding model is a negative stressor that has a substantial effect on the vestibular system, but this impact is minimal once the proprioceptive and visual systems are intact. The field of structural health monitoring (SHM) faces a fundamental challenge related to accessibility. While analytical and empirical models and laboratory tests can provide engineers with an estimate of a structures expected behavior under various loads, measurements of actual buildings require the installation and maintenance of sensors to collect observations. This is costly in terms of power and resources. MyShake, the free seismology smartphone app, aims to advance SHM by leveraging the presence of accelerometers in all smartphones and the wide usage of smartphones globally. MyShake records acceleration waveforms during earthquakes. Because phones are most typically located in buildings, a waveform recorded by MyShake contains response information from the structure in which the phone is located. This represents a free, potentially ubiquitous method of conducting critical structural measurements. In this work, we present preliminary findings that demonstrate the efficacy of smartphones for extracting the fundamental frequency of buildings, benchmarked against traditional accelerometers in a shake table test. Additionally, we present seven proof-of-concept examples of data collected by anonymous and privately owned smartphones running the MyShake app in real buildings, and assess the fundamental frequencies we measure. In all cases, the measured fundamental frequency is found to be reasonable and within an expected range in comparison with several commonly used empirical equations. For one irregularly shaped building, three separate measurements made over the course of four months fall within 7% of each other, validating the accuracy of MyShake measurements and illustrating how repeat observations can improve the robustness of the structural health catalog we aim to build.

Dilithium is a signature scheme that is currently being standardized to the Module-Lattice-Based Digital Signature Standard by NIST. It is believed to be secure even against attacks from large-scale quantum computers based on lattice problems. The implementation efficiency is important for promoting the migration of current cryptography algorithms to post-quantum cryptography algorithms. In this article, we optimize the implementation of Dilithium with several new approaches proposed. Firstly, we improve the efficiency of parallel NTT implementations. The overhead of shuffling operations is reduced in our implementations, and fewer loading instructions are invoked for the precomputations. Then, we optimize the sampling and bit-packing of polynomial coefficients in Dilithium. We can handle double the number of coefficients within one register using a new approach for the sampling of secret key polynomials. The approaches proposed in this article are applicable to implementations under AVX2 and AVX-512 instruction sets. Take Dilithium2 as an illustration, our AVX2 implementation demonstrates improvements of 22.7%, 16.9%, and 13.5% for KeyGen, Sign, and Verify compared with the previous implementation. Local fish markets play a crucial role in meeting local and regional demand for seafood. However, the underlying social and local processes determining price formation in these markets still need to be clarified. Through ethnographic research of an artisanal fishing community in central Chile focused on the common hake catching (Merluccius gayi gayi), we found that mutual observation and negotiation are the two key social processes of the local economic order. These processes produce two local structures: (a) the fishers’ maritime cliques in the sea and (b) the chain structure in the cove, which combines commercial and community relationships to determine market prices. A common approach for questionnaire collection is to set up a WLAN and respondents submit answers via specific apps or a web browser. However, much unnecessary background traffic is incurred once a device connects to Wi-Fi, consuming limited airtime and constraining the number of simultaneous connections. In this paper, we show that connection is not necessary, since the handshake messages themselves can carry answers. We propose Quest, an alternative questionnaire collection system that requires neither Internet access nor a stable connection. Quest sets up a password-protected Wi-Fi network to which respondents connect using any smart device with a Wi-Fi module and type their answers as passwords. Quest then retrieves the answers from the handshake messages. However, the answers are sent in hashed form instead of plain text; thus, recovery of answers from handshake messages, i.e., password cracking, is time-consuming, leading to a long delay. Quest employs three techniques to address the challenge. First, Quest restricts the types of questions to closed-ended ones, reducing the set of possible answers. Second, Quest precomputes an offline dictionary to speed up the cracking process. Third, we prove that, in our problem, it is sufficient to consider the first 128 bits of a key, instead of the entire 384 bits in the standard. Thus, Quest only checks the first 128 bits of a key. These techniques reduce the worst-case per-user cracking time from several minutes to a few seconds on a laptop computer. Limited availability of recorded ground motions poses a challenge for reliable probabilistic seismic-hazard analysis (PSHA), even in highly seismic regions like the Western United States. Stochastic ground motions are commonly employed to address this challenge. However, the stochastic ground motion models (GMMs) may not consistently generate ground motions compatible with the site hazard due to their calibration using global data, failing to capture site-specific characteristics adequately. In the absence of recorded motions, physics-informed simulations provide a viable alternative but are deterministic with limitations of their own that makes them challenging to support PSHA. This article introduces a Bayesian framework that combines prior knowledge from a stochastic GMM, calibrated with global data, with site-specific data obtained from deterministic physics-informed simulations. The proposed framework utilizes the Rezaeian–Der Kiureghian (2010) model as the stochastic GMM and incorporates site-specific data from the CyberShake 15.12 study. By updating the mean and variance of the predictive relationships, along with the marginal distribution of the model parameters, through Bayesian inference, this framework allows for the simulation of site-specific ground motions consistent with the site characteristics. The statistics of peak ground acceleration distributions, as well as both the median and variability of the elastic response spectra, obtained from the calibrated stochastic GMM, demonstrate consistency with those derived using GMMs based on the Next Generation Attenuation (NGA) database. In recent years, virtual idols have garnered considerable attention because they can perform activities similar to real idols. However, as they are fictitious idols with nonphysical presence, they cannot perform physical interactions such as handshake. Combining a robotic hand with a display showing virtual idols is the one of the methods to solve this problem. Nonetheless a physical handshake is possible, the form of handshake that can effectively induce the desirable behavior is unclear. In this study, we adopted a robotic hand as an interface and aimed to imitate the behavior of real idols. To test the effects of this behavior, we conducted step-wise experiments. The series of experiments revealed that the handshake by the robotic hand increased the feeling of intimacy toward the virtual idol, and it became more enjoyable to respond to a request from the virtual idol. In addition, viewing the virtual idols during the handshake increased the feeling of intimacy with the virtual idol. Moreover, the method of the handshake peculiar to idols, which tried to keep holding the user's hand after the conversation, increased the feeling of intimacy to the virtual idol. Purpose: To compare the visual outcomes and complication rates between the extra-ocular needle-guided haptic insertion technique (XNIT) and the conventional handshake (HS) technique of scleral fixation intra-ocular lens (SFIOL). Methods: In this retrospective study, we retrieved data of those patients who had undergone SFIOL surgery from January 2018 to May 2022 at our institute for aphakia following either a complicated cataract surgery or an ocular trauma and had a minimum follow-up of 3 months. Results: Of the 156 eyes, the HS technique was done in 80 eyes and the remaining 76 eyes with XNIT. At 3 months follow-up visit, there was no significant difference in the median best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) (P = 0.988) and uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) (P = 0.765) between the two techniques. There was no statistically significant difference between pre-operative median BCVA and post-operative UCVA in XNIT (P = 0.961) and the HS technique (P = 0.831) at 3 months follow-up visit. The complication rates between the two techniques were minimal and comparable. The most common post-operative complication was corneal edema. The incidence of cystoid macular edema was slightly more in the XNIT group but not statistically significant (P = 0.05). Two patients in the HS group developed retinal detachment, which settled after repeat surgery. The proportion of mature fish at length is one of the most important population attributes when evaluating reproductive potential for fish stock assessment purposes. Bias in maturity ogive parameters can lead to fishery management decisions based on misspecified biological reference points. These parameters can vary spatially and temporally, and this variability should be understood and included in the assessment models. However, integrating this variability becomes challenging when specific spatial-dependent ogives cannot be used in the stock assessment model. Hence, this study proposes a novel use of a multivariate response Bayesian regression model, employing an integrated nested Laplace approximation to estimate a single global maturity ogive using data from various spatial areas. This model explicitly accounts for differences in the sampling process and combines information from different areas to estimate shared maturity ogive parameters using joint-likelihood procedures. The model is applied to the European hake stock in ICES (International Council for the Exploration of the Sea) Divisions 27.8.c and 27.9.a, serving as a practical guide. In this model, we have considered different predictors to handle the relationship between the probability of being mature and the length and year covariates. Our results suggest that the logistic formulation correctly captures the relationship between the probability of being mature and length. For year variability, including a year factor covariate or year random effect in the predictor model produces similar values of goodness of fit measures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the aim to upcycle fish side-streams, enzymatic hydrolysis is often applied to produce protein hydrolysates with bioactive properties or just as a protein source for food and feed. However, the production of hydrolysates generates a side-stream. For underutilized fish and fish backbone this side-stream will contain fish bones and make it rich in minerals. The aim of this study was to assess the relative bioaccessibility (using the standardized in vitro model INFOGEST 2.0) of minerals in a dietary supplement compared to bone powder generated after enzymatic hydrolysis of three different fish side-streams: undersized whole hake, cod and salmon backbones consisting of insoluble protein and bones. Differences in the bioaccessibility of protein between the powders were also investigated. The enzyme hydrolysis was carried out using different enzymes and hydrolysis conditions for the different fish side-streams. The content and bioaccessibility of protein and the minerals phosphorus (P), calcium (Ca), potassium (K) and magnesium (Mg) were measured to evaluate the potential of the powder as an ingredient in, e.g., dietary supplements. The bone powders contained bioaccessible proteins and minerals. An efficient and dynamic role-based access-control (RBAC) model is presented in this work which utilizes access-control for internet of things (IoT) nodes while minimizing storage and computational overhead. Also, for the identification of the malicious packets at the gateway server, a machine learning method has been presented. In addition, a framework for data management techniques in the IoT environment is designed to ensure efficient and secure storage, management, and processing of IoT data. The results have been evaluated by using the Montage and Cybershake workload in terms of energy consumption, processing time, detection accuracy and misclassification rate. The results show that the proposed secure framework for effective workload resource management (SFE-WRM) attains better performance in comparison to the reliable and energy-efficient route selection (REERS) and FTA-WRM method. Also, by using the security method, the proposed method provides better security to the IoT nodes during the data aggregation and processing of the workload. The ultimate aim of this work is to provide a solution for the development of a secure and efficient IoT environment that can address critical security challenges and enable the widespread adoption of IoT devices and services. Cloud computing (CC) is a popular distributed computing technology that is virtualized, scalable, and provides resources and services on demand through subscription-based models. Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) deliver these services, primarily catering to a vast range of business and scientific applications. CC is used to evaluate large-scale scientific applications, often implemented as scientific workflows (SWs). This paper highlights the wide range of applications using CC, including image processing, data mining, and healthcare systems, all of which require efficient and accessible cloud services. These applications often have strict deadlines and consume significant energy, emphasizing the need for low-energy resource utilization. The paper proposes a Replication-based Resource Provisioning and Constrained-aware Task Scheduling (R2PCT) Framework for Cloud Workflows to address these challenges. The framework aims to manage resources efficiently in a multilevel environment and schedule tasks using replication-based fault-tolerant techniques while considering deadline and budget constraints. To evaluate its effectiveness, simulations were conducted on WorkflowSim for Montage and CyberShake workflows. The proposed R2PCT strategy performs better than the existing state-of-the-art strategy, reducing execution time by an average of 52%, minimizing execution cost by 34%, and decreasing energy consumption by 35% compared to the existing R-DEAR strategy for Montage SWs. For CyberShake workflows, the proposed R2PCT strategy performs better than existing methods, reducing execution time by an average of 59%, minimizing execution cost by 38%, and decreasing energy consumption by 60% compared to the existing R-DEAR strategy.

Abstract Background There are significant inequities between Māori (Indigenous people) and non-Māori in ageing outcomes. This study used a strengths-based approach based on the key cultural concept of mana motuhake (autonomy and self-actualisation) to develop a tuakana-teina (literally older sibling-younger sibling) peer education programme to assist kaumātua (elders) in addressing health and social needs. The purpose of this study was to test the impact on those receiving the programme. Three aims identify the impact on outcomes, resources received and the cost effectiveness of the programme. Methods Five Kaupapa Māori (research and services guided by Māori worldviews) iwi (tribe) and community providers implemented the project using a partnership approach. Tuakana (peer educators) had up to six conversations each with up to six teina (peer learners) and shared information related to social and health services. A pre- and post-test, clustered staggered design was the research design. Participants completed a baseline and post-programme assessment of health and mana motuhake measures consistent with Māori worldviews. Open-ended questions on the assessments, five focus groups, and four individual interviews were used for qualitative evaluation. Findings A total of 113 kaumātua were recruited, and 86 completed the programme. The analysis revealed improvements in health-related quality of life, needing more help with daily tasks, life satisfaction, paying bills and housing problems. Qualitative results supported impacts of the programme on mana motuhake and hauora (holistic health) through providing intangible and tangible resources. Cost-effectiveness analysis showed that the intervention is cost effective, with a cost per QALY of less than the conventional threshold of three times GDP per capita. Conclusions A culturally-resonant, strengths-based programme developed through a participatory approach can significantly improve health and social outcomes in a cost-effective way. In the California Current Ecosystem, the California Undercurrent (CU) is the predominate subsurface current that transports nutrient-rich water from southern California poleward. In this study, we used a large dataset of spatially explicit in situ observations of Pacific hake (Merluccius productus) and the CU (36.5–48.3°N) to estimate relationships between northward undercurrent velocity and hake distribution and determine whether these relationships vary across space or life-history stage. We found that both hake occurrence and density had strong spatially complex relationships with the CU. In areas north of 44°N (central Oregon), the CU effect was spatially consistent and opposite for occurrence (negative) and density (positive), indicating that hake may aggregate in areas of high northward velocity in this region. In areas south of 44°N, the CU effect showed a cross-shelf gradient for both occurrence and density, indicating a more nearshore hake distribution when northward velocity is higher in this region. Together, our results suggest that future changes in the CU due to climate change are likely to impact hake differently in northern and southern areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Elite soccer players consistently report using several recovery methods after practices and games. However, it is unclear how their subsequent performance could be enhanced using broad protocols. The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of two different comprehensive recovery protocols in physiological, neuromuscular, and perceptual outcomes. Eighteen Mexican National Team players (19.56 ± 0.62 years) were recruited. Using a randomized parallel group design, players followed one of two recovery protocols: (a) carbohydrate and protein shake, foam roller, cold-water immersion, and tart cherry juice concentrate (n = 9) or (b) carbohydrate and protein shake, stretching, and intermittent cold-water immersion (n = 9) following the completion of an unofficial game and the day after. Muscular creatine kinase, countermovement jump, hamstring maximal voluntary contraction, perceived recovery, and muscle soreness were assessed before, immediately after, and 20-44-68 h post-game. Significant effects (set at ρ≤0.05) of time were present in both interventions. Muscular creatine kinase was normalized entirely at 68 h post-game, while neuromuscular and perceptual outcomes were homogenized at 44 h. No statistically significant effects between protocols were found. Still, the interaction effects showed changes only in the group using protocol (a) at post-game and 20 h after in neuromuscular and muscle soreness. There were large correlations between muscular creatine kinase and accelerations, decelerations, sprints, and high-speed running distances. In conclusion, the interventions are equally effective for improving physiological, neuromuscular, and perceptual outcomes. Thus, elite soccer players may benefit from different combinations of methods after practices or games to obtain positive effects on recovery after them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although otoliths are widely used as archives to infer life‐history traits and habitat use in fishes, their biomineralization process remains poorly understood. This lack of knowledge is problematic as it can lead to misinterpretation of the different types of signals (e.g., optical or chemical) that provide basic data for research in fish ecology, fisheries management, and species conservation. Otolith calcification relies on a complex system involving a pericrystalline fluid, the endolymph, whose organic and inorganic compositions are spatially heterogeneous for some constituents. This property stems from the particular structure of the calcifying saccular epithelium. In this study, we explored the spatial heterogeneity of elemental incorporation in otoliths for two species of high economic interest, European hake Merluccius merluccius (L. 1758) and European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax (L. 1758). Two‐dimensional mappings of chemical elements were obtained using UV high‐repetition‐rate femtosecond laser ablation (fs‐LA) system coupled to a high‐resolution inductively coupled plasma sector field mass spectrometer analyses on transverse sections of sagittae. Results highlighted a clear asymmetry between proximal (sulcus) and distal (antisulcus) concentrations for elements such as magnesium (Mg), phosphorus (P), manganese (Mn), and potassium (K) with concentration gradient directions that varied depending on the element. Strontium (Sr) and barium (Ba) did not show a proximo‐distal gradient. These results are discussed in light of current knowledge on the endolymph composition and the mechanisms that lead to its compartmentalization, highlighting the need for further research on otolith biomineralization. Operational implications for studies based on otolith chemical composition are also discussed with emphasis on advice for sampling strategies to avoid analytical biases and the need for in‐depth analyses of analytical settings before comparing otolith signatures between species or geographical areas. An equilibrium is communication-proof if it is unaffected by new opportunities to communicate and renegotiate. We characterize the set of equilibria of coordination games with pre-play communication in which players have private preferences over the coordinated outcomes. The set of communication-proof equilibria is a small and relatively homogeneous subset of the set of qualitatively diverse Bayesian Nash equilibria. Under a communication-proof equilibrium, players never miscoordinate, play their jointly preferred outcome whenever there is one, and communicate only the ordinal part of their preferences. Detecting respiration rate (RR) is a promising and practical heat stress diagnostic method for cows, with significant potential benefits for dairy operations in monitoring thermal conditions and managing cooling treatments. Currently, the optical flow method is widely employed for automatic video-based RR estimation. However, the optical flow-based approach for RR estimation can be time-consuming and susceptible to interference from various unrelated cow movements, such as rising, lying down, and body shaking. The aim of this study was to propose a novel optical flow-based algorithm for remotely and rapidly detecting the respiration rate of cows in free stalls. To accomplish this, we initially collected 250 sixty-second video episodes from a commercial dairy farm, which included some episodes with interfering motions. We manually observed the respiration rate for each episode, considering it as the ground truth RR. The analysis revealed that certain cow movements, including posture changes and body shaking, introduced noise that compromises the precision of RR detection. To address this issue, we implemented noise filters, with the Butterworth filter proving highly effective in mitigating noise resulting from cow movements. The selection of the region of interest was found to have a substantial impact on the accuracy of RR detection. Opting for the central region was recommended for optimal results. The comparison between the RR estimated by the modified cow respiration rate (MCRR) algorithm and the ground truth RR showed a good agreement with a mean absolute relative error of 7.6 ± 8.9% and a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.86. Additionally, the results also indicated that reducing the original frame rate from 25 to 5 frames per second and adjusting the image pixel size from 630 × 450 to 79 × 57 pixels notably reduced computational time from 39.8 to 2.8 s, albeit with a slight increase in mean absolute relative error to 8.0 ± 9.0%. Namibia's population of Cape fur seals Arctocephalus pusillus pusillus is a major constituent of top predator biomass in the northern Benguela upwelling system. Understanding their diet is key to comprehending their role in the ecosystem and potential drivers of recent population changes, such as a northward extension of the population's range. Using prey remnants retrieved from 1 413 scat samples collected monthly at 12 Cape fur seal colonies along the Namibian coast over 28 years (1994-2021), we assessed seasonal and geographical differences in their diet. We include the first comparison of diet between the growing colonies in the far northern area of Namibia and the colonies to the south, many of which have been in decline. Four fish species dominated in the diet. The bearded goby Sufflogobius bibarbatus, which is ubiquitous throughout the northern Benguela ecosystem, was the mostabundant prey item in the diet. However, Cape fur seals appeared to show a preference for the more-nutritious fish species Cape horse mackerel Trachurus capensis and the lanternfish Lampanyctodes hectoris by switching to those prey during autumn and spring in the north and south, respectively, coinciding with the greater availability of those species during upwelling periods. The availability of Cape horse mackerel, especially during a critical period for the growth and development of pups before the onset of winter, may be key to the greater productivity of Cape fur seal colonies in the north relative to those in the south of Namibia, and warrants further investigation. Juveniles of Cape horse mackerel and Cape hake Merluccius capensis were the only fishery species of commercial importance that were relatively abundant in the seals' diet, while the sardine Sardinops sagax, which was historically dominant, was found in negligible proportions. Summary: In this comprehensive investigation, we examined the impact of incorporating sodium chloride, potassium sorbate and citric acid, during the desalting stage to extend the shelf life of desalted hake (Merluccius hubbsi). Compared to the conventional desalting carried out in water, the desalting with the additive assayed significantly reduced total aerobic bacteria counts and extended the shelf life by threefold (from 5.7 to 21.7 days at 4 °C). After 42 days of storage in vacuum packaging, the desalted with additives hake samples showed low levels of volatile nitrogenous compounds and malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration (21.78 ± 0.56 mg TBVN 100 g−1 and 0.531 ± 0.015 mg MDA kg−1, respectively). Mechanical and colour parameters remained stable, and sensory characteristics (smell, appearance, texture, taste) did not change for 28 days at 4 °C. These findings demonstrate that the incorporation of additives into a meticulously designed three‐stage desalting process enables the production of a ready‐to‐use fishery product with an extended market life under refrigeration. The field of structural health monitoring (SHM) faces a fundamental challenge related to accessibility. While analytical and empirical models and laboratory tests can provide engineers with an estimate of a structure's expected behavior under various loads, measurements of actual buildings require the installation and maintenance of sensors to collect observations. This is costly in terms of power and resources. MyShake, the free seismology smartphone app, aims to advance SHM by leveraging the presence of accelerometers in all smartphones and the wide usage of smartphones globally. MyShake records acceleration waveforms during earthquakes. Because phones are most typically located in buildings, a waveform recorded by MyShake contains response information from the structure in which the phone is located. This represents a free, potentially ubiquitous method of conducting critical structural measurements. In this work, we present preliminary findings that demonstrate the efficacy of smartphones for extracting the fundamental frequency of buildings, benchmarked against traditional accelerometers in a shake table test. Additionally, we present seven proof-of-concept examples of data collected by anonymous and privately owned smartphones running the MyShake app in real buildings, and assess the fundamental frequencies we measure. In all cases, the measured fundamental frequency is found to be reasonable and within an expected range in comparison with several commonly used empirical equations. For one irregularly shaped building, three separate measurements made over the course of four months fall within 7% of each other, validating the accuracy of MyShake measurements and illustrating how repeat observations can improve the robustness of the structural health catalog we aim to build. Sustainable management of living resources must reconcile biodiversity conservation and socioeconomic viability of human activities. In the case of fisheries, sustainable management design is made challenging by the complex spatiotemporal interactions between fish and fisheries.We develop a comprehensive metapopulation framework integrating data on species life‐history traits, connectivity and habitat distribution to identify priority areas for fishing regulation and assess how management impacts are spatially distributed. We trial this approach on European hake fisheries in the north‐western Mediterranean, where we assess area‐based management scenarios in terms of stock status and fishery productivity to prioritize areas for protection.Model simulations show that local fishery closures have the potential to enhance both spawning stock biomass and landings on a regional scale compared to a status quo scenario, but that improving protection is easier than increasing productivity. Moreover, the interaction between metapopulation dynamics and the redistribution of fishing effort following local closures implies that benefits and drawbacks are heterogeneously distributed in space, the former being concentrated in the proximity of the protected site.A network analysis shows that priority areas for protection are those with the highest connectivity (as expressed by network metrics) if the objective is to improve the spawning stock, while no significant relationship emerges between connectivity and potential for increased landings.Synthesis and applications. Our framework provides a tool for (1) assessing area‐based management measures aimed at improving fisheries outcomes in terms of both conservation and socioeconomic viability and (2) describing the spatial distribution of costs and benefits, which can help guide effective management and gain stakeholder support. Most small SUVs in the automotive market are equipped with torsion beam suspension for the rear wheels. Torsion beam suspension consists of a cross-member and a trailing arm. The cross-member plays a crucial role in preventing the vehicle from twisting; therefore, a shape that can withstand loads is essential. In this study, various shapes of cross-member reinforcements were added to the existing torsion beam suspension to analyze its structural strength when subjected to arbitrary forces. Analysis results were obtained for stiffness and driving stability factors such as smooth road shake, impact hardness, and memory shake. Based on these results, we identified the optimal cross-member shape with low torsional stiffness and a small side view swing arm angle by examining the changes in driving stability. The increasing global threat of antibiotic resistance, which has resulted in countless fatalities due to untreatable infections, underscores the urgent need for a strategic action plan. The acknowledgment that humanity is perilously approaching the "End of the Miracle Drugs" due to the unjustifiable overuse and misuse of antibiotics has prompted a critical reassessment of their usage. In response, numerous relevant medical societies have initiated a concerted effort to combat resistance by implementing antibiotic stewardship programs within healthcare institutions, grounded in evidence-based guidelines and designed to guide antibiotic utilization. Crucial to this initiative is the establishment of multidisciplinary teams within each hospital, led by a dedicated Infectious Diseases physician. This team includes clinical pharmacists, clinical microbiologists, hospital epidemiologists, infection control experts, and specialized nurses who receive intensive training in the field. These teams have evidence-supported strategies aiming to mitigate resistance, such as conducting prospective audits and providing feedback, including the innovative 'Handshake Stewardship' approach, implementing formulary restrictions and preauthorization protocols, disseminating educational materials, promoting antibiotic de-escalation practices, employing rapid diagnostic techniques, and enhancing infection prevention and control measures. This Kaupapa Māori writing inquiry explores "Tāngata Tiriti" (People of the Treaty) as a settler/invader identity term in Aotearoa New Zealand. Derived from the failed policy platform of "biculturalism" and "Indigenous inclusion," Tāngata Tiriti is a byproduct of neoliberalism and settler/invader colonialism that fails to provide for Indigenous inclusion, mana motuhake (Indigenous sovereignty) and tino rangatiratanga (self-determination). This article argues that Tāngata Tiriti should be abandoned due to the 2014 paradigm shift surrounding Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Te Tiriti) and mana motuhake from the Te Paparahi o Te Raki report and the author's subsequent research on non-signatory hapū and iwi. Pākehā settler/invader perspectives on Tāngata Tiriti are compared with Tāngata Moana and Asian scholarly understandings. The author advocates adopting Tāngata Moana thinking around letting Māori as mana whenua lead "wayfinding" and "meaning-making" to define allyship and promote a "collective future" together based on Māori constitutional values that are generally universal throughout Pacific cultures. Instead of settler/invader identity constructs and the doctrine of the nation as a White possession, movement toward a collective future must begin from a place of sovereign relationality. The pedagogy of teaching Te Tiriti must change, the ill-conceived Tāngata Tiriti identity must be abandoned, and "New Zealand" as a settler/invader colonial enterprise must end. Our future must be post-settler/invader colonial and post-Tiriti and must recognize unceded mana motuhake or sovereignty. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, virtual idols have garnered considerable attention because they can perform activities similar to real idols. However, as they are fictitious idols with nonphysical presence, they cannot perform physical interactions such as handshake. Combining a robotic hand with a display showing virtual idols is the one of the methods to solve this problem. Nonetheless a physical handshake is possible, the form of handshake that can effectively induce the desirable behavior is unclear. In this study, we adopted a robotic hand as an interface and aimed to imitate the behavior of real idols. To test the effects of this behavior, we conducted step-wise experiments. The series of experiments revealed that the handshake by the robotic hand increased the feeling of intimacy toward the virtual idol, and it became more enjoyable to respond to a request from the virtual idol. In addition, viewing the virtual idols during the handshake increased the feeling of intimacy with the virtual idol. Moreover, the method of the hand-shake peculiar to idols, which tried to keep holding the user’s hand after the conversation, increased the feeling of intimacy to the virtual idol.

Guidance for developing and implementing antimicrobial stewardship programs for children is lacking. This review article describes unique considerations for planning antimicrobial management of children that may impact stewardship strategies. A variety of methods and training tools are described along with metrics specific to measuring antibiotic use and outcomes in children. Handshake stewardship is specifically explained and is considered a best practice. Information on stewardship in unique settings, including the neonatal intensive care unit and outpatient settings, are included.

With the aim to upcycle fish side-streams, enzymatic hydrolysis is often applied to produce protein hydrolysates with bioactive properties or just as a protein source for food and feed. However, the production of hydrolysates generates a side-stream. For underutilized fish and fish backbone this side-stream will contain fish bones and make it rich in minerals. The aim of this study was to assess the relative bioaccessibility (using the standardized in vitro model INFOGEST 2.0) of minerals in a dietary supplement compared to bone powder generated after enzymatic hydrolysis of three different fish side-streams: undersized whole hake, cod and salmon backbones consisting of insoluble protein and bones. Differences in the bioaccessibility of protein between the powders were also investigated. The enzyme hydrolysis was carried out using different enzymes and hydrolysis conditions for the different fish side-streams. The content and bioaccessibility of protein and the minerals phosphorus (P), calcium (Ca), potassium (K) and magnesium (Mg) were measured to evaluate the potential of the powder as an ingredient in, e.g., dietary supplements. The bone powders contained bioaccessible proteins and minerals. Thus, new side-streams generated from enzymatic hydrolysis can have possible applications in the food sector due to bioaccessible proteins and minerals.

One of the most vastly used protocols to protect services traffic like the web and email is Transport Layer Security (TLS). In 2018 the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) standardized the latest version TLS 1.3, Introduced a significant enhancement in the protocol performance, and presented some new features. One of the new features is zero round trip-time (0-RTT) handshake mode, where the client can send the application data to the server within the handshake messages before the TLS connection is fully established. However, this application data is replayable. The replay attacks in 0-RTT handshake mode have been studied, and several mechanisms are proposed for protection, these proposed mechanisms are not able to prevent replay attacks when the server functionality is provided by a distributed environment such as multiple servers in a cloud computing environment or a CDN. This paper introduces TLS Guard as a new mechanism that extends TLS 1.3 to prevent replay attacks in a distributed environment. We evaluated a prototype TLS Guard implementation in controlled experiments and showed that its effect comes at the cost of some CPU overhead. More importantly, we showed that TLS Guard is scalable and tolerates faults without any required changes on the client side.

An authentic ecological transition for fisheries sustainability requires the integration of all relevant biological criteria in assessment models. Current analyses aim to dissect the evolution of some demographic and genetic metrics in the overharvested Southern European hake fishery in the last four decades. Demographic data were drawn from the official records of ICES, while genetic data were obtained from a lustrum-based sampling series between 1975 and 2014. Opposite to Non-Adaptive Polymorphic Systems (NAPS) microsatellites, Adaptive Polymorphic Systems (APS) microsatellites succeeded at detecting genetic erosion at the maximum population overharvest in lustrum 1996–2000, a phenomenon also confirmed with the molecular variation of the mtDNA cytochrome b gene. We show that the maximum demographic mortality Z_NSSB (1986–1990) predated both the maximum genetic effective mortality Z_LDNe (1991–1995) as well as the maximum cohort-based mortality Z¯_ICES (1996–2000). Such temporal uncoupling between demographic and genetic metrics suggests that official cohort analyses are far from assessing the real biological status of the Southern European hake fishery to achieve its sustainability-oriented advice.

The aim of work was to investigate on the acceptability of yogurt skimmed in its clot variants and milk shake and to identify terms that describe it. A hundred students, habitual consumers of yogurt participated, who responded about their level of pleasure in a scale hedonic of nine categories and marked of a list the terms that associated to evaluated product. The data were introduced in the statistical program XL-STAT to be processed. Both variants of yogurt were evaluated in high categories of acceptability, -I like a lot- for that of clot and -I like-, for the milk shake. The terms with which they described them were: healthy, thick, good acidity, homogeneous, good quality, anything sweet, milky, anything creamy, nutritious and tasteless. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The development of site- and path-specific (i.e., non-ergodic) ground-motion models (GMMs) can drastically improve the accuracy of probabilistic seismic hazard analyses (PSHAs). The varying coefficient model (VCM) is a novel technique for developing non-ergodic GMMs, which puts epistemic uncertainty into spatially varying coefficients. The coefficients at nearby locations are correlated by a prior distribution imposed on a Gaussian Process. The correlation structure is determined by the data, and later used to predict coefficients and their epistemic uncertainties at new locations. It is important to carefully verify the technique before its results can be accepted by the engineering community. This study used a series of simulation-based controlled ground-motion datasets from CyberShake to test a modified VCM technique, which partitions the epistemic uncertainty into spatially varying source, site, and path terms. Because the simulation parameters (inputs) are known, verification of what is recovered by the VCM from CyberShake simulations is straightforward. We found that the site effects in CyberShake datasets can be reliably estimated by the VCM. However, the densely-located self-similar events in CyberShake datasets along pre-defined faults violate the isotropic assumption underlying the VCM, thus preventing the VCM from capturing the genuine source effects. For path effects, cell-specific attenuation approaches fail to recover the anelastic attenuation pattern of the 3D velocity model, which is most likely due to other unmodeled effects and inappropriate assumption of wave-propagation path. Instead, a midpoint approach that only considers the aggregated path effects can better recover the strong anelastic attenuation within basins by fixing the correlation length of path effects. Lessons learned in this study not only provide guidance for future applications of VCM to both simulation and empirical datasets, but will also guide further development of the technique, with emphasis on the recovery of path effects. Topic: Empress Eugénie (1826–1920), the widow of Emperor Napoléon III of France, developed mature cataracts late in life. In 1920, at age 94, she underwent surgery to one eye by Ignacio Barraquer (1884–1965), a member of the famous dynasty of ophthalmologists originally from Barcelona, Spain. Clinical relevance: Barraquer used his new instrument which employed a vacuum cup to hold the lens for intracapsular extraction. Methods: Research of historical documents. Results: The surgery was a success; the Empress was pleased that she could read again although she did not have long to live. She was his first famous cataract patient and his fame spread internationally. Barraquer spoke at the International Congress of Ophthalmology held in Washington, DC, in 1922 and demonstrated his technique on patients in Washington, DC, New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Richmond, VA. Conclusion: Barraquer's surgery on Éugenie, who was the most powerful woman in Europe during her husband's reign, influenced the course of development of cataract surgical technique. Understanding environmental drivers of recruitment variability in marine fishes remains an important challenge in fish ecology and fisheries management. We developed a conceptual life‐history model for Pacific hake (Merluccius productus) along the west coast of the United States and Canada to generate stage‐specific and spatiotemporally‐specific hypotheses regarding the oceanographic and biological variables that likely influence their recruitment. Our model included seven life stages from pre‐spawning female conditioning through pelagic juvenile recruitment (age‐0 fish) for the coastal Pacific hake stock. Model‐estimated log recruitment deviations from the 2020 hake assessment were used as the dependent variable, with predictor variables drawn primarily from a regional ocean reanalysis for the California Current Ecosystem. Indices of prey and predator abundance were also included in our analysis, as were predictors of local‐ and basin‐scale climate. Five variables explained 59% of the recruitment variability not accounted for by the stock–recruitment relationship in the hake assessment. Recruitment deviations were negatively correlated with May–September eddy kinetic energy between 34.5° and 42.5°N, the North Pacific Current Bifurcation Index, and Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii) biomass during the spawner preconditioning stage, alongshore transport during the yolk‐sac larval stage, and the number of days between storm events during the first‐feeding larval stage. Other important predictors included upwelling strength during the preconditioning stage, the number of calm periods during the first‐feeding larval stage, and age‐1 hake predation on age‐0 pelagic juveniles. Parameters belonging to the physical status and gonadal size of certain fish provide crucial information for assessing both the productivity and fecundity of declining fish populations. These parameters are vulnerable to the negative impacts of disease agents such as internal or systemic parasites. Although parasitic diseases might influence these parameters, the literature investigating these pathophysiological alterations is scanty. Therefore, the current study represents one of the scarcest studies that document the possible link between parasitism, gonadal health, and the growth of European hake (Merluccius merluccius). Screening of imported European halves indicated a relatively high prevalence of Anisakis pegreffi Larvae 3 infestation, with an 80% prevalence rate, a mean intensity of 24.4, and a mean abundance of 19.5. However, the prevalence of Anisakid larvae infection in native fish was 36% with a mean intensity of 7.36 and mean abundance of 2.65.The current research revealed remarkable ovarian pathology that involved several forms of degenerative changes in ovarian tissues. Such gonadal pathologies were attributed to the damaging effect of the retrieved Anisakis pegreffi Larvae 3. Gonadosomatic index of both heavily infected imported / native hakes was relatively impacted by the progressive gonadal pathology resulting from Anisakis pegreffi L3 infection. Morphometric measurements of the gonads and body have revealed that, gonadosomatic index of both heavily infected imported / native hakes was relatively impacted by the progressive gonadal pathology resulting from Anisakis pegreffi L3 infection.
