The article focuses on the International Geophysical Year (IGY) program which aims to explore the continent of Antarctica. Considering the interests of ten nations in exploring the continent, amicable agreements concerning the optimum sites and operational cooperative problems of the continent were signed by these nations to keep the international aspects of the IGY program. Specifically, the U.S. has formed the Antarctic Committee that was supported by Task Force 43 of the U.S. Navy and have set up seven bases within the continent. Among the scope included in the Antarctica research program conducted by U.S. researchers were in the field of Geology, Glaciology, Meteorology, and Oceanography.

Currently, the museums use different interactive technologies to communicate their exhibitions; however, it turns out that in most cases, information is not accessible to all members of the public. In this paper we present the design of a tangible user interface to enhance accessibility in geological exhibitions, specifically for the case of visitors with visual impairments, and we also present the study's results about how to improve the experience of those who visit museums, using this tangible media technology as an exhibitor for samples. The geological museum operating at the Institute of Geology and Geography is accessible for a wide public and popularizes the variety of Earth crust minerals and rocks. The nucleus of the museum is represented by the collection of minerals, rocks and manufactured articles donated in 1965 by a Lithuanian Alfonsa's Žukelis (1899-1977), who used to live in Sverdlovsk (Russian Urals area). Now all the collections of the museum contain over 4500 specimens of different contents. A. Žukelis' collection is the heart of the museum. The Lithuanian Museum of Geology was established in Vievis (Elektrénai Municipality) on the base of the Drill-core Storage of the Institute of Geology, which was built in 1980, and several permanent exhibitions. Meantime, an1 open-air exhibition of erratic boulders (stones) from Lithuania is displayed for public in a 4-hectares area surrounding the Museum building. The memorial exhibition of Academician Professor Juozas Dalinkevičius (1893-1980), eminent scientist and promoter of the Lithuanian geological school, is under display. The Trail of Time exhibition under construction at Grand Canyon National Park is the world's largest geoscience exhibition at one of the world's grandest geologic landscapes. It is a 2-km-long interpretive walking timeline trail that leverages Grand Canyon vistas and rocks to guide visitors to ponder, explore, and understand the magnitude of geologic time and the stories encoded by Grand Canyon rock layers and landscapes. As one of a new generation of geoscience education exhibits, the Trail of Time targets multiple cognitive and affective levels with accurate content, active geoscience inquiry and interpretation, and place-based cultural integration. It developed as an outgrowth of sustained geoscience research funded by the National Science Foundation, with scientists as the conceivers and coordinators of the project. It benefits from a high level of synergy with the National Park Service interpretation division, as well as extensive on-site and off-site evaluation of pedagogic effectiveness in the outdoor informal science environment. The Trail of Time will impact many of the five million annual visitors to the National Park. Associated cognitive research on public understanding of "deep time" offers opportunities to inform more effective geoscience pedagogy for informal and formal educational settings. The creation of an educational geologic display at the Lake Havasu City campus of Mohave Community College was accomplished by collecting boulder-sized specimens of representative rock types that occur within the boundaries of Mohave County, Arizona. The intent of the display is to offer students something more comprehensive than hand specimens, to inform residents and visitors of the county's geologic diversity and history as well as to provide curriculum opportunities for K-14 in geology. Forty-nine boulders typifying rock types of the Basin and Range, the Colorado Plateau, and the Colorado River extensional corridor are labeled with a rock description and a map of the collection locality. An informative geologic timeline incorporated with the Colorado Plateau display and more in-depth information on the college's science website provide students and citizens with a good introduction to various concepts in geology. These components, accompanied by biological, environmental, and meteorological campus displays and by similar information on the website, are part of a growing program to promote natural science within the county.
