Introduction: The management of eruption disturbances in orthodontics may be challenging and requires a careful diagnosis and treatment planning. This case report discusses the challenges of a two-phase orthodontic treatment of a patient presenting with a dental eruption pattern anomaly. Patient concerns: A 10-year-old boy presented with no complaints for a routine orthodontic evaluation during the mixed dentition. Primary diagnoses: The patient was diagnosed with a skeletal Class I malocclusion with unilateral posterior crossbite, incomplete mandibular lateral incisor-canine transposition and a unilateral maxillary ectopic canine. Interventions: Phase 1 started with rapid maxillary expansion to correct the maxillary constriction and the ectopic eruption of the right maxillary canine. In the mandibular arch, phase 1 included the extraction of the left primary lateral incisor and canine, alignment of the left permanent lateral incisor and orthodontic traction of the left permanent canine. The duration of phase 1 was 14 months. Phase 2 involved a comprehensive course of orthodontic treatment and started when the patient was aged 13 years. This phase lasted 18 months. Results: An adequate dental occlusion was obtained, and the treatment results were stable after an 18-month follow-up. Conclusion: In this case, the early diagnosis of the dental anomalies was valuable as it allowed an early intervention to be undertaken, which resulted in overall treatment simplification and potentially minimised the adverse effects. Background: The primary objective of this study was to assess the occurrence, distribution, and features of ectopic first permanent molars (FPMs), as well as to investigate the clinical outcomes associated with ectopic eruption based on the degree of root resorption observed in primary second molars.Methods: This study was performed retrospectively by examining panoramic radiographs of 7070 patients aged 5 to 12 years. The gender and age of the patients, the number, location, and distribution mode of ectopic FPMs, the resorption degree of the distal roots of primary second molars, and the clinical outcome of ectopic eruption were evaluated. Descriptive statistics and chi-square test were performed on the obtained data using SPSS version 22 (SPSS Inc, Chicago, IL, USA).Results: In 144 of 7070 cases, a total of 221 ectopic permanent first molar teeth were detected (2% prevalence). The mean age of the 144 patients was 8.04 years. Ectopic eruption was most common in patients aged 7–8 years (48.63%), which was statistically significant (P < 0.05). Ectopic eruptions were more common in females (58.30%) than males (41.70%; P < 0.05). Of the ectopic permanent first molars, 78 (35.30%) were in the mandible, and 143 (64.70%) were in the maxilla. The relationship between the degree of resorption and the type of ectopic eruption was statistically significant (P < 0.05).Conclusion: The increase in the severity of root resorption in the primary second molars was a significant predictor for the prognosis of ectopic eruption in the present study. Early diagnosis and treatment of ectopic FPMs are of great importance to preventing premature loss of primary second molars resulting in malocclusion.

Introduction: Tooth transposition is considered as the anomaly of tooth position in two adjacent teeth; the most frequent locations include canine and first maxillary premolar. Transposition may happen along with hypodontia, supernumerary teeth, or the persistence of a deciduous predecessor. Supernumerary teeth are considered as the teeth in excess of the normal dentition. Supernumerary teeth can happen in any region of the dental arch. Nevertheless, having supernumerary tooth accompanied by transpositions in the canine area is a rare condition. The aim of this report was introducing a patient with supernumerary maxillary canine along with transposition. A 14-year-old boy without any skeletal, systemic, metabolic and mental problems was referred to the Orthodontic Department of Yazd Dental School, Yazd, Iran. In the clinical study of displacement of the upper canine in the anterior region of the upper jaw, which has led to crowding and buccal protrusion of the main canine of the upper jaw. This supernumerary canine tooth with displacement was discovered based on routine radiological examinations. Conclusion: The presence of a supernumerary tooth with transposition usually causes occlusion and functional problems in patients. In these cases, a complete clinical and radiographic examination along with a detailed history should be done in order to plan the appropriate surgical, orthodontic, and restorative treatment plan. Early detection is essential to prevent these problems.

ABSTRACT Permanent canines are essential for the preservation of the stomatognathic system, as they are part of the occlusal and aesthetic function and balance. During the normal development of occlusion, canines follow a long and complex trajectory until their eruption, that is, they are more likely to suffer disturbances during this process. Removal of the permanent canine should only be considered in extreme cases, where the canine itself is not susceptible to orthodontic traction. Orthodontic traction is the most indicated treatment due to the high morphofunctional and aesthetic value of the permanent canine. The aim of this study is to report a clinical case of traction surgery of the superior permanent canine included in the maxilla. A 13-year-old female patient attended the dental clinic at the Nilton Lins University accompanied by her guardian, referred by an orthodontistfor canine traction surgery. during the examIn the clinical analysis, tooth 13 was absent from the dental arch. The patient had a computed tomography scan, where it was possible to verify the actual position of the toothimpacted with the partially erupted crown on the alveolar ridge. After planning, surgery was performed to install an orthodontic button and adapt the ligature with a 0.30 mm wire. After the 10-month follow-up period, the presence of the tooth in arch, completely erupted, was observed, showing effectiveness in the proposed treatment. Therefore, the procedure for bonding the orthodontic device was performed satisfactorily without complications or intercurrences, making it possible to continue the orthodontic treatment. The patient remains under follow-up.

OBJECTIVES: Impacted canine (IC) is a dental anomaly that varies in its frequency according to the population of interest. The aim of this study is to investigate the frequency and distribution pattern of maxillary ICs (MxIC) and mandibular ICs (MnIC) in the population of Al-Madinah, Saudi Arabia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional retrospective study of all patients attended Taibah University Dental Hospital, Madinah, Saudi Arabia. Inclusion criteria were individuals aged 15 years and older and no history of orthodontic treatment or craniofacial syndromes. Patients with incomplete dental records or missing/distorted Orthopantomograph (OPG) were excluded. All OPGs were taken using standardized equipment. Data were explored for frequency and pattern of canine impaction both in the maxilla and the mandible and statistically tested to detect significant differences. RESULTS: A total of 7466 individuals fulfilled the inclusion criteria with mean age of 37.43 ± 14.5 years. Of the total sample, 173 individuals had at least one IC. MxIC alone occurred in 86.71% of the cases, while MnIC occurred in 8.67%. The remaining 4.62% had at least one IC in each jaw. Unilateral IC occurred in 89.2% of the cases with left-side predominance in the maxilla. CONCLUSION: In this sample, the frequency of MxIC was 2.1% and MnIC was 0.3%. Almost equal distribution of IC occurred between females and males (IC Odds ratio F:M 1:1.08). This case report describes a simple alternative for treatment of mesioangulation of mandibular second molars. An 11-year-old girl was diagnosed with unilateral posterior crossbite, moderate incisor crowding and mesioangulation of the right mandibular second molar. The ectopic second molar was uprighted using a modified lingual arch with a distal hook and elastic chains. Orthodontic traction began after appliance installation and was activated once per month using 120 g of force. After six months, the right mandibular second molar was in an upright position. Orthodontic treatment continued with teeth levelling and alignment until acceptable occlusal and aesthetic results were achieved. Adequate stability was observed one year after debonding. The modified mandibular lingual arch with a distal hook is a simple and effective alternative to manage mesioangulation of mandibular second molars with minimum adverse effects and stable outcomes. ABSTRACT Introduction: Invasive cervical resorption (ICR) is a relatively rare type of ERR (External Root Resorption), in which a localized resorption begins in the cervical area of the tooth, below the epithelial junction and above the ridge crest. Objective: Describe the clinical case of an 11-year-old boy with no dental trauma history, presenting moderate crowding and ectopic eruption of the maxillary right central incisor. He had been undergoing orthodontic treatment elsewhere, and his family was dissatisfied with the results. Description: A new treatment was indicated, which included rapid maxillary expansion followed by extraction of four premolars. During routine panoramic evaluation, a radiolucid image was detected and a periapical radiograph was requested. At this point, an ICR of the maxillary right central incisor was found. The treatment was cautiously finalized and despite the use of light forces, central incisor was severally compromised by ICR and was therefore extracted. Conclusion: This clinical example discusses the importance of routine radiographs for the early diagnoses of ICR.

Ectopic eruption of teeth is a rare phenomenon, when teeth are found outside their regular site of eruption. This condition is quite rare in non-dentate regions such as maxillary sinus, nasal septum, mandibular condyle, coronoid process and the palate. The most typical symptomatic presentation of this condition is facial pain. Most of the reported cases of ectopic eruption are permanent third molars and only few cases of ectopic deciduous tooth have been reported in the literature. Ectopic eruption of the permanent molar may absorb the distal root of the primary second molar and may result in a decreased arch length or delayed eruption of the permanent tooth, requiring timely treatment. Therefore, we devised an effective and convenient method to unlock the entrapped tooth using a novel device called a "piston-elastic". This case report aims to explain the design and clinical application of this piston-elastic and to describe successful cases. Three patients (aged 6, 13, and 16 years) with ectopically erupted maxillary and mandibular molars, respectively, were treated with a piston-elastic. It was bound to the locked molar to improve the eruption path. After a certain time period, the repulsive force pushed the surface of the adjacent tooth, improving the eruption path of the entrapped tooth. The piston-elastic is a novel device that simply and effectively changes the direction of eruption of ectopically entrapped molars. As it can be manufactured and attached to the chair side, impression acquisition on a model cast and laboratory procedures are unnecessary. Maxillary canine and first premolar transposition is a complicated dental anomaly to treat, especially if the clinician's goal is to orthodontically move the canine into its normal position. Early diagnosis with cone-beam computed tomography simplifies the treatment of this pathology. This case report describes a patient with bilateral transposition, one complete and the other incomplete, involving the maxillary canine and the first premolar (Mx.C.1P). The orthodontic treatment involved the correction of both transpositions. In the complete transposition, the traction was mesial and upward to move the canine into a more apical position with a wider dentoalveolar process for easier crown interchange. Ectopic tooth eruption in a non-dental area is a rare entity, and is most common in oral cavity. There have been a few case reports of teeth erupting in mandibular condyle, chin, palate, coronoid process, and maxillary sinus. Ectopic tooth in the maxillary sinus are found incidentally on routine radiological examination, same time they can be symptomatic and associated with pathologies usually dentigerous cyst or odontogenic keratocyst. Facial pain, purulent rhinorrhoea, epistaxis, headache, swelling, and epiphora-related naso-lacrimal duct obstruction can also be seen. By Caldwell-Luc procedure the ectopic teeth within the maxillary sinus are often removed. In this study, a case of ectopic maxillary third molar tooth on right maxillary sinus is presented.

The article presents recommendations for monitoring and treating dentition and occlusion issues in children. It provides information on dental screening through infancy, childhood, and adolescence, treatment objectives and considerations, and includes problems such as oral habits which can affect teeth, ectopic eruption of teeth, and spacing issues.

Ectopic eruption of teeth is a rare phenomenon although there have been reports of teeth in the nasal septum, mandibular condyle, and maxillary sinus. This impaction can present itself in a variety of ways such as chronic or recurrent sinusitis, sepsis, and facial numbness and can also be asymptomatic. The aim of this study was to describe, by means of research literature and by a case report, the characteristics and occurrence of ectopic eruption in the maxillary sinus. We have analyzed and compared clinical cases of ectopic teeth in the maxillary sinus with a search on PubMed utilizing keywords such as "ectopic," "teeth," "sinus," "maxillary," and Boolean operators "or" and "and" up until 2016. Fifty-one cases were found, of which 53% were female. The age ranged between 3 and 72 years, with an average age of 28.36 years. The higher prevalence of ectopic teeth is the 3rd molars. Ten of these teeth are associated with a dentigerous cyst, 1 by an osteoma, and 2 by soft tissue. Standard treatment for an ectopic tooth is extraction, but for other patients, treatment of choice in asymptomatic ectopic tooth cases is continued observation. Objective The aim of this study was the clinical and molecular characterization of a family segregating a trait consisting of a phenotype specifically involving the maxillary canines, including agenesis, impaction and ectopic eruption, characterized by incomplete penetrance and variable expressivity. Design Clinical standardized assessment of 14 family members and a whole-exome sequencing (WES) of three affected subjects were performed. WES data analyses (sequence alignment, variant calling, annotation and prioritization) were carried out using an in-house implemented pipeline. Variant filtering retained coding and splice-site high quality private and rare variants. Variant prioritization was performed taking into account both the disruptive impact and the biological relevance of individual variants and genes. Sanger sequencing was performed to validate the variants of interest and to carry out segregation analysis. Results Prioritization of variants “by function” allowed the identification of multiple variants contributing to the trait, including two concomitant heterozygous variants in EDARADD (c.308C>T, p.Ser103Phe) and COL5A1 (c.1588G>A, p.Gly530Ser), specifically associated with a more severe phenotype ( i.e . canine agenesis). Differently, heterozygous variants in genes encoding proteins with a role in the WNT pathway were shared by subjects showing a phenotype of impacted/ectopic erupted canines. Conclusions This study characterized the genetic contribution underlying a complex trait consisting of isolated canine anomalies in a medium-sized family, highlighting the role of WNT and EDA cell signaling pathways in tooth development. Although many reports have demonstrated that ectopic pain develops in the orofacial region following tooth pulp inflammation, which often causes misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment for patients with pulpitis, the precise mechanism remains unknown. In the present study, we hypothesized that the functional interaction between satellite glial cells and neurons mediated by interleukin 1β (IL-1β) in the trigeminal ganglion (TG) is involved in ectopic orofacial pain associated with tooth pulp inflammation. The digastric muscle electromyogram (D-EMG) activity elicited by capsaicin administration into the maxillary second molar tooth pulp was analyzed to evaluate the noxious reflex and was significantly increased in rats with inflammation of the maxillary first molar (M1) versus rats injected with saline. A significant increase in the expression of connexin43 (Cx43), a gap junction containing protein, was observed in activated satellite glial cells surrounding second molar-innervating neurons in the TG after M1 pulpitis. Daily administration of Gap26, a Cx43 mimetic peptide and inhibitor, in the TG significantly suppressed the enhancement of capsaicin-induced D-EMG activity and the percentage of Fluoro-Gold (FG)-labeled cells encircled by glial fibrillary acid protein-immunoreactive (IR) + Cx43-IR cells after M1 pulp inflammation ( P < 0.01). The percentage of FG-labeled cells encircled by glial fibrillary acid protein-IR + IL-1β-IR cells, IL-1 type I receptor-IR cells labeled with FG, and TRPV1-IR cells labeled with FG significantly increased after M1 pulp inflammation ( P < 0.01). Daily administration of IL-1ra, an IL-1 receptor antagonist, into the TG significantly reduced the enhancement of capsaicin-induced D-EMG activity and the percentage of TRPV1-IR neurons labeled with FG after M1 pulp inflammation ( P < 0.01). The present findings suggest that satellite glial cell is activated in the TG via activated gap junctions composed of Cx43 following tooth pulp inflammation, which leads to the hyperactivation of remote neurons via IL-1β mechanisms and results in ectopic tooth pulp pain in the adjacent tooth. Purpose The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of ectopically erupting first permanent molars (FPMs) in children attending the clinics of the Pediatric Dentistry Department at İstanbul University. Materials and methods This retrospective study was performed using panoramic radiographs of 7,649 patients (3,506 females and 4,143 males) aged from 5 to 11 years. The age and gender of the subjects, the number and location of the ectopic molars, bilateral versus unilateral occurrence, the degree of resorption of the roots of the primary molars, and other associated dental anomalies were assessed. Ectopic eruption was categorized according to a grading system based on the resorption rates of the primary molars. Results Of the 7,649 reviewed subjects, 203 (118 males and 85 females) were diagnosed with ectopic eruption of the FPMs, resulting in a frequency of 2.65%. The mean age of the subjects with ectopic FPMs was 6.82±1.25 (range: 5--11) years. Of the 273 ectopic FPMs, 157 (57.5%) were detected in the maxilla and 116 (42.5%) in the mandible. Severe and very severe degrees of ectopic eruption were found to be more common in the maxilla than in the mandible, whereas a moderate degree of ectopic eruption was more prevalent in the mandible (p=0.251). Conclusion To our knowledge, this is the first study in a Turkish population reporting the prevalence of ectopic eruption of FPMs. Although the difference between the right and the left sides was not significant, the severity of ectopic eruption was different between the maxilla and the mandible. Background: Ectopic mandibular third molar is a rare clinical entity with incompletely known etiology. Here, we sought to delineate its epidemiological, clinical and radiographic characteristics, and therapy by integrating and analyzing the cases treated in our institution together with previously reported cases. Method: A new definition and classification for ectopic mandibular third molar was proposed based on its anatomic location on panoramic images. Thirty-eight ectopic mandibular third molars in 37 patients and 51 teeth in 49 patients were identified in our disease registry and from literature (1990-2016), respectively. These cases were further categorized and compared according to our classification protocol. The demographic, clinicopathological and radiographic data were collected and analyzed. Results: These ectopic teeth were categorized into four levels, 33 in level I(upper ramus), 32 in level II (middle ramus), 15 in level III (mandibular angle) and 9 in level IV (mandibular body). The common clinical presentations included pain, swelling and limited mouth opening, although sometimes asymptomatic. Most teeth were associated with pathological lesions. Treatments included clinical monitor and surgical removal by intra- or extraoral approach with favorable outcomes. Clinical presentations and treatment options for these teeth were significantly associated with their ectopic locations as we classified. Conclusions: Ectopic mandibular third molars are usually found in patients with middle ages and in upper and middle ramus of mandible. Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the diagnostic aspects, contributing conditions, and predictive key factors associated with ectopic eruption of maxillary second molars. Material and Methods: This retrospective study evaluated the study models, lateral cephalographs, and panoramic radiographs of 40 adult subjects (20 men, 20 women) with bilateral ectopic eruption and 40 subjects (20 men, 20 women) with normal eruption of the maxillary second molars. Studied variables were analyzed statistically by independent t-tests, univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis, followed by receiver-operating characteristic analysis. Results: Tooth widths of bilateral lateral incisors, canines, and premolars were wider in the ectopic group, which resulted in greater arch lengths. The ANB angle and maxillary tuberosity distance (PTV-M1, PTV-M2) were smaller in the ectopic group. The long axes of the maxillary molars showed significant distal inclination in the ectopic group. The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that three key factors�arch length, ANB angle, and PTV-M1 distance�were significantly associated with ectopic eruption of the second molars. The area under the curve (AUC) was the largest for the combination of the three key factors with an AUC greater than 0.75. PTV-M1 alone was the single factor that showed the strongest association with ectopic eruption (AUC 0.7363). Conclusions: An increase in arch length, decrease in ANB angle, and decrease in maxillary tuberosity distance to the distal aspect of the maxillary first molar (PTV-M1) were the most predictive factors associated with ectopic eruption of maxillary second molars. Objectives: The aims of this study were to assess long-term impact of tooth eruption stages (ES) on sealant retention on occlusal surfaces previously coated with intermediary bonding layer and to determine caries prevention. Materials and methods: Sixty-five school children were selected (aged 6-10 years), with four non-carious permanent first molar in different ES (OP (operculum present), ME (marginal edge), CE (completely erupted)). Split-mouth and single-blind study design was used. The teeth (260) were randomly selected according to treatment (sealant/technique): F (Fluroshield), H (Helioseal Clear Chroma), SF (Single Bond + F), EH (Excite + H). Sealant retention, marginal integrity, discoloration, and caries prevention were assessed after 6, 12, 18, and 24 months by calibrated examiner (Spearman = 0.91) using visual inspection. Data were submitted to the Cox proportional hazard model (survival analysis) and Likelihood ratio χ test (correlation), p ≤ 0.05. Results: At baseline, ES was 20 % in OP, 54 % in ME, and 26 % in CE. There was no significant difference on sealant retention between the treatments ( p = 0.2774). However, significant differences were found regarding the ES on sealant retention ( p = 0.0041). The CE stage showed the highest retention survival rate during the 24 months. The overall sealant prevention average was found to be about 99.4 % and showed no difference between the groups. Conclusions: Eruption stages affect sealant retention irregardless of the intermediate layer and type of sealant. However, there was caries prevention on tooth occlusal surfaces after 24 months, regardless of treatment. Clinical relevance: Sealing is recommended to prevent occlusal caries of newly erupted teeth in high-caries-risk patients. Background: Ectopic eruption and/or impaction of maxillary permanent canines is a frequent problem in clinical dentistry. Previous studies aimed to identify potential associated factors and predictors for impacted maxillary canines have only used conventional univariate statistics, which does not allow the analysis of the interaction between and within variables. Multivariate data analysis (MVDA) is a better and more powerful tool for the integration and interpretation of complex datasets. Aim: The aim of this study was to validate previously explored predictors of permanent maxillary canine impaction using MVDA. Subjects and methods: This cohort study included all the patients referred during 2011 to Mölndal Hospital, Sweden for surgical exposure of impacted canines (N = 45). Age- and gender-matched orthodontic patients (N = 45) with normally erupting canines comprised the control group. The age range for both groups was 11-17 years. The positions of the canine teeth (orthopantograms), the skeletal variables (profile radiographs), and dentoalveolar traits (casts) were evaluated as potential predictive factors for impaction. Results: None of the parameters evaluated with either profile radiography or casts were positively correlated with impacted maxillary canines, with the exception of the location of the already impacted canines, as identified by orthopantogram. Conclusion: No correlation between clinical variables and impaction was found using MVDA. Therefore, these variables could not be used as predictors of canine impaction. Other types of parameters, such as inheritance and molecular factors that regulate the biological mechanisms of the eruption process, need to be further investigated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The report presents examples of successful cases of autotransplantation of ectopic teeth as donor in the treatment of clinically missing maxillary anterior teeth in young patients. The transplanted teeth were either severely ectopic, inverted, rotated or in an unfavourable position that they are commonly sacrificed as a result. The aim of this article is to discuss the etiology as well as treatment options and diagnostic imaging techniques. Methods: A PubMed and Medline search of the literature from 1965 to 2015 to ectopic third molars in the mandibular notch was performed. Furthermore, a clinical case provided by the authors is reported. Results: Among the eight reviewed cases, two male and six female patients were affected that ranged from 25 to 62 years of age (mean 48.4). Pain and swelling in the preauricular region or trismus but also the absence of symptoms was reported. Only in two of the summarized articles an extra-oral access for the removal of the tooth was used. The etiology seems to be individually different, however dentigerous cysts and chronic inflammation seem to play an important role in their appearance. While previous diagnostic reports described two-dimensional diagnostic imaging, currently the three-dimensional imaging is common for preoperative surgical planning with respect to removing ectopic molars. Conclusions: Ectopic third molars in the mandible are a rare condition. The etiology seems to be individually different. This review article describes the changing approach to the management of various impacted teeth. Currently, more third molars are being retained, and it is likely that more patients will develop impactions than a generation ago because of non-extraction orthodontic treatment plans. There are still valid reasons for the surgical removal of selected third molars during the teenage years, during which time impaction can be anticipated to avoid the higher rate of morbidity associated with later removal. Palatally-impacted canines (PIC) can now often be managed with interceptive and non-surgical approaches, which are attractive options. Ectopic eruption is a deviation from the normal eruption pattern, making the tooth erupt out of its normal position, and possibly causing resorption of adjacent primary teeth. A wide range of etiological factors may be responsible for ectopic eruption of the teeth, so their management depends on the correction of the established etiological factor. The present case report describes an unusual case of ectopically erupted central incisor encased within an abnormally thickened labial frenum, which was treated by orthodontic repositioning of the ectopically erupting tooth after frenectomy. The presence of supernumeraries may lead to irruptive problems, such as impacted teeth, functional and aesthetic disorders. The present study describes two clinical cases, with anterior teeth eruption disorders caused by additional dental elements, treated early. Patients presented with aesthetic involvement, with delay in the emergence of the upper incisors. The clinical and radiographic examinations detected the presence of obstacles to the teeth eruption. Early treatment with 2x4 appliance was realized, followed by final corrective orthodontics. After restoration of the dimension for retained teeth, there was spontaneous eruption in clinical case 1 and need of traction in clinical case 2. When patients reached the complete permanent dentition, a corrective phase was performed with the objective of detailing the dental occlusion and finishing the treatment. The early diagnosis of teeth impacted and supernumerary, provide the achievement of adequate occlusion and positive aesthetic of patients, with good prognosis, avoiding psychological and functional problems caused by absence of anterior teeth. Tooth eruption sequences vary in a non-random way among mammalian species. Several variables have been linked to this, including tooth and jaw shape, adaptations to diet, and food processing. Likewise, changes in eruption patterns correlate with the speed of postnatal growth in some groups, the Schultz's Rule pattern. Here, the eruption pattern of the permanent dentition in lower jaws from different cervid species have been investigated to discern the effect of these factors and phylogeny as well as to reconstruct the ancestral tooth eruption sequence of cervids. In ruminants, the different patterns of emergence of permanent teeth seem to be best explained by phylogeny. The degree of hypsodonty, age of first molar eruption, and life history parameters such as longevity and age of female sexual maturity do not explain the observed sequential differences in eruption patterns. The Parsimov-based analysis for the ancestral state resulted in a tooth eruption sequence of m1 - m2 - i1 - i2 - i3 - c - m3 - (ppp) for Cervidae; a pattern recorded in Odocoileus, Capreolus, and Hydropotes. The eruption pattern of Caenomeryx filholi, from the Oligocene of Gaimersheim, is identical to the result of the Parsimov-based analysis except for the presence of a first premolar, a tooth lost in cervids. Specific mutations in dynamin 2 are linked to Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), an inherited peripheral neuropathy. However, the effects of these mutations on dynamin function, particularly in relation to the regulation of the actin cytoskeleton remain unclear. Here, selected CMT-associated dynamin mutants were expressed to examine their role in the pathogenesis of CMT in U2OS cells. Ectopic expression of the dynamin CMT mutants 555Δ3 and K562E caused an approximately 50% decrease in serum stimulation-dependent lamellipodia formation; however, only K562E caused aberrations in the actin cytoskeleton. Immunofluorescence analysis showed that the K562E mutation resulted in the disappearance of radially aligned actin bundles and the simultaneous appearance of F-actin clusters. Live-cell imaging analyses showed F-actin polymers of decreased length assembled into immobile clusters in K562E-expressing cells. The K562E dynamin mutant colocalized with the F-actin clusters, whereas its colocalization with clathrin-coated pit marker proteins was decreased. Essentially the same results were obtained using another cell line, HeLa and NG108-15 cells. The present study is the first to show the association of dynamin CMT mutations with aberrant actin dynamics and lamellipodia, which may contribute to defective endocytosis and myelination in Schwann cells in CMT. Objectives: The premature loss of primary teeth is a potential risk factor for poor arch length development. Adequate arch length is important to the progression of the permanent teeth. Poor arch length can lead to crowding, ectopic eruption, or impaction of these teeth. This study is designed to assess the prevalence of premature loss of primary teeth in the 5-10-year-old age group. Materials and Methods: The study group included 185 children, that is, 91 boys and 94 girls. The dental examination was conducted by an experienced examiner under sufficient artificial light. Data including patient age and missing teeth were collected. Descriptive statistics were applied for data analysis, and from the results, Chi-square tests were used at a level of significance of 5% (P < 0.05). Results: We observed a 40.54% prevalence of premature loss of primary teeth with no statistically significant difference between genders. The lower left primary second molar was the most commonly absent tooth in the dental arch (13.5%). Conclusion: The status of premature loss of primary teeth was high in the study group. Implementation of efficient educational and preventive programs to promote oral health would help children maintain a healthy primary dentition and eventually prevent the disturbances in the future development of normal occlusion. Tooth transposition is a rare dental anomaly that often represents a challenge for the clinician. The case of a girl with skeletal Class III malocclusion and concomitant maxillary canine-first premolar bilateral transposition, followed from 7 to 17 years of age, is presented. Ectopic eruption of a tooth within the dentate region of the jaws is often noticed in clinical practice and is well documented in the literature but the ectopic eruption into the non dentate region is rare. Diverse anatomical locations such as nasal cavity, nasal septum, mandibular condyle, coronoid process, the palate and the maxillary sinus can infrequently be non dentate sites of ectopic eruptions of teeth. While conducting an anthropometric study on 100 skulls an incidental and interesting case of ectopic maxillary third molar tooth was found. The tooth was partially erupted with the unerupted part lying impacted in the posterior wall of maxilla. The case is reported and discussed for its significant clinical implications. Objective. To assess the incidence and severity of root resorption of maxillary incisors caused by ectopically and normally erupting maxillary canines and to analyse factors influencing root resorption of incisors using cone beam computed tomography. Subjects and methods. The study sample comprised 59 patients with a total of 80 canines. Forty-six of the canines, in 37 patients, were defined as ectopic and 34 canines, in 22 patients, were defined as normal. The severity of root resorptions were analysed according to studies by Ericson and Kurol. Multiple logistics regression was used to evaluate the association between various factors and root resorptions. Results. The prevalence of root resorptions was significantly higher in the ectopic canine group, 11.0% of the central incisors and 67.6% of the lateral incisors in comparison to 0% and 36.2% in the normal erupting group. Most resorptions were defined as 'slight' and were located in the middle third of the root. There was a statistically significant relationship between canines located mesial to the midline of the lateral incisor and root resorption on the maxillary incisors. Conclusion. The present results show that root resorption of maxillary lateral incisors was common in patients referred to CBCT imaging due to maxillary canine eruption disturbances. Although significantly more frequent in patients with ectopically erupting canines, lateral incisor resorption was also found in association with approximately every third of the normally erupting canines. Purpose To describe a nasolacrimal duct ( NLD) obstruction secondary to an ectopic tooth in a 5-year-old male Border collie. The dog was presented with a 1-month history of mucopurulent discharge from the left eye ( OS) preceded by a lifelong history of epiphora OS. Treatment with neomycin/polymyxin B/dexamethasone ophthalmic solution had not improved the clinical signs, and the NLD was not patent when irrigated by the referring veterinarian. Methods A complete ophthalmologic examination was performed followed by dacryocystorhinography and computed tomography ( CT). Results The ophthalmologic examination revealed marked mucopurulent discharge, mild conjunctivitis, slightly elevated STT measurements, and a negative Jones test OS. Both nasolacrimal puncta OS could be cannulated without resistance for approximately 1.5 cm. Upon irrigation, copious amounts of mucopurulent discharge were exited through the corresponding punctum, while no fluid could be detected at the nares. Dacryocystorhinography was performed. Radiographs revealed an ectopic left canine tooth within the left nasal cavity. A cystic dilation of the NLD was observed proximal to the ectopic tooth. Computed tomography was performed to determine the exact position of the tooth and possible involvement of adjacent structures; CT confirmed the previous imaging findings. Treatment with systemic antibiotics, NSAIDs, and ofloxacin ophthalmic solution led to resolution of the clinical signs within several days. Surgery was declined by the owner. Conclusion This is the first case report describing a blocked NLD due to an ectopic tooth in a dog. Ectopic teeth should be included as a differential diagnosis in cases of dacryocystitis and chronic epiphora in dogs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The aim of the study was to analyze the prevalence and distribution of ectopic eruption of the permanent maxillary first molar (EEM) in individuals scheduled for orthodontic treatment and to investigate the association of EEM with dental characteristics, maxillary skeletal features, crowding, and other dental anomalies. Methods: A total of 1,317 individuals were included and randomly divided into two groups. The first 265 subjects were included as controls, while the remaining 1,052 subjects included the sample from which the final experimental EEM group was derived. The mesiodistal (M-D) crown width of the deciduous maxillary second molar and permanent maxillary first molar, maxillary arch length (A-PML), maxillomandibular transverse skeletal relationships (anterior and posterior transverse interarch discrepancies, AT1D and PT1D), maxillary and mandibular tooth crowding, and the presence of dental anomalies were recorded for each subject, and the statistical significance of differences in these parameters between the EEM and control groups was determined using independent sample t-tests. Chi-square tests were used to compare the prevalence of other dental anomalies between the two groups. Results: The prevalence of maxillary EEM was 2.5%. The M-D crown widths, AT1D and PT1D, and tooth crowding were significantly greater, while A-PML was significantly smaller, in the EEM group than in the control group. Only two subjects showed an association between EEM and maxillary lateral incisor anomalies, which included agenesis in one and microdontia in the other. Introduction: Teething is a complex phenomenon leading to the functional position of teeth within the dental arch. Numerous hazards are associated with dental eruption, such as an ectopic tooth. An ectopic tooth occurs when the tooth eruption is adjacent to the normal site. The main problem with ectopic teeth lies in their extraction. This article presents arguments which justify the selection of an atypical route to extract an ectopic maxillary intra-sinus wisdom tooth and cyst, through a Le Fort I osteotomy (LFIO). Clinical observation: A 26-year-old patient presented recurring signs of right unilateral sinusitis and an intraoral posterior flow. The patient's history noted the extraction of three wisdom teeth with agenesis of the upper right one. The orthopantomogram showed a radiopaque image in the right maxillary sinus. The scan imagery confirmed the diagnosis of an intra-sinus wisdom tooth with a hyper-dense image in its upper posterior part. The scan also showed a hyper-dense image of cystic appearance around the tooth, surrounded by a bony septum. An LFIO procedure was performed. The post-operative course was uneventful. After six months, the patient was asymptomatic. Discussion: The main challenge presented in the case was the choice of the exact approach. The Caldwell-Luc route would have led to significant decay of the anterior wall of the sinus. The LFIO allowed the resection of the osseous septum, the excision of the lesion in one piece and the curettage of the sinus under visual control.
