The liquid-to-vapor transition can occur under unexpected conditions in nanopores, opening the door to fundamental questions and new technologies. The physics of boiling in confinement is progressively introduced, starting from classical nucleation theory, passing through nanoscale effects, and terminating with the material and external parameters that affect the boiling conditions. The relevance of boiling in specific nanoconfined systems is discussed, focusing on heterogeneous lyophobic systems, chromatographic columns, and ion channels. The current level of control of boiling in nanopores enabled by microporous materials such as metal organic frameworks and biological nanopores paves the way to thrilling theoretical challenges and to new technological opportunities in the fields of energy, neuromorphic computing, and sensing. BACKGROUND: Consumers of boiled cassava in Africa, Latin America and Asia use specific preference criteria to evaluate its cooking quality, in terms of texture, colour and taste. To improve adoption rates of improved cassava varieties intended for consumption after boiling, these preference criteria need to be determined, quantified and integrated as post‐harvest quality traits in the target product profile of boiled cassava, so that breeding programs may screen candidate varieties based on both agronomic traits and consumer preference traits. RESULTS: Surveys of various end‐user groups identified seven priority quality attributes of boiled cassava covering root preparation, visual aspect, taste and texture. Three populations of contrasted cassava genotypes, from good‐cooking to bad‐cooking, in three countries (Uganda, Benin, Colombia) were then characterized according to these quality attributes by sensory quantitative descriptive analysis (QDA) and by standard instrumental methods. Consumers' preferences of the texture attributes mealiness and hardness were also determined. By analysis of correlations, the consumers' preferences scores were translated into thresholds of acceptability in terms of QDA scores, then in terms of instrumental measurements (water absorption during boiling and texture analysis). The thresholds of acceptability were used to identify among the Colombian and Benin populations promising genotypes for boiled cassava quality. CONCLUSION: This work demonstrates the steps of determining priority quality attributes for boiled cassava and establishing their corresponding quantitative thresholds of acceptability. Because of their abundance and high emissions rates, small reservoirs (< 0.01 km2) can be important emitters of the greenhouse gases carbon dioxide and methane. However, emissions estimates from small reservoirs have lagged those of larger ones, and efforts to characterize small reservoir emissions have largely overlooked variations in emissions pathways, times, and locations. We intensively sampled four small reservoirs in Georgia, USA, during the summer to quantify the contribution and spatiotemporal variability of different emissions pathways (CO2 and CH4 diffusion, CH4 ebullition). We used these data to evaluate the efficiency and accuracy of different sampling schemes. Every emissions pathway was dominant in one reservoir on one sampling day, and excluding ebullition caused misestimation between −89% and −15% of the total flux. Sampling only once daily caused misestimation between −78% and 45%, but sampling twice or just after dawn (07:00 h) reduced error. Sampling four or fewer locations caused misestimation between −85% and 366%, and our results indicated that 6–20 sampling locations may be needed for reasonable accuracy. The floating aquatic macrophyte Wolffia sp. (duckweed) appeared to exert control over emissions variability, and the consequences of not accounting for variability were greater in a duckweed‐covered reservoir. Our results indicate that sampling only at 10:00 h (modal sampling time of prior efforts) may lead to the erroneous conclusion that reservoirs with high photosynthetic biomass are CO2 sinks rather than sources. The aim of this article is to introduce a novel approach to identifying flow regimes and void fractions in microchannel flow boiling, which is based on binary image segmentation using digital image processing and deep learning. The proposed image processing pipeline uses adaptive thresholding, blurring, gamma correction, contour detection, and histogram comparison to separate vapor from liquid areas, while the deep learning method uses a customized version of a convolutional neural network (CNN) called U-net to extract meaningful features from video frames. Both approaches enabled the automatic detection of flow boiling conditions, such as bubbly, slug, and annular flow, as well as automatic void fraction calculation. Especially CNN demonstrated its ability to deliver fast and dependable results, presenting an appealing substitute to manual feature extraction. The U-net-based CNN was able to segment flow boiling images with a Dice score of 99.1% and classify the above flow regimes with an overall classification accuracy of 91%. Summary: In this study, the effects of germination, roasting and boiling processes on bioactive substances, mineral profiles, fatty acid composition and phenolic profiles present in soybean seeds and soybean oil extracted from soybean were investigated. While the acidity value of the crude and roasted soybean seed oils are 0.89% and 1.09%, the acidity values of the germinted and boiled soybean oils were 1.58% and 1.21%, respectively. The free fatty acid value of the germination sample group was established to be higher than the other treatment groups. The amounts of total phenolic substance were reported between 10.22 and 33.78 mgGAE/100 g. Linoleic acid amounts of soybean oil varied between 55.72% and 56.14%. The total carotenoid and flavonoid amounts of seeds were measured to be between 0.53 (control) and 2.83 μg g−1 (germination) to 43.60 mgCE kg−1 (boiled) to 126.60 mgCE kg−1 (roasting), respectively. Protein results of the seeds were established between 43.94% (control) and 46.94% (germination). The amount of K ranged from 10 883 (boiled) to 13 994 mg kg−1 (roasting), while the amount of P range from 5340.8 (control) to 5695.9 mg kg−1 germination. The amount of Ca of the samples varied between 4606.1 (control) and 5216.1 (boiled). While linoleic acid is determined at the highest rate in soybean oil obtained from crude soybean, linoleic acid amount was determined as highest in oil obtained after roasting, germination and boiling processes applied to soybean rutin contents of soybean seed samples were determined between 3.52 and 7.81 mg kg−1. Boiling and germination increased the routine value in soybean seed samples and was determined as 7.62 and 7.81 mg kg−1, respectively. This study presents the pool boiling heat transfer performance of R-513A, a low-GWP alternative to R-134a, on a smooth tube at various saturation temperatures. The tests were carried out in the heat flux range of 10 to 90 kW/m2. The experimental results show that at low heat flux q ″ ≤ 30 kW/m2, the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) of R-513A is equivalent to R-134a, while at heat flux 30 ≥ q ″ ≥ 90 kW/m2, the average HTC of R-513A is nearly 14% lower than that of R-134a irrespective of all the saturation temperatures. While the average HTC of pure R-513A is nearly 13% higher than that of R-1234ze(E). Further, the HTC of R-513A is compared with other similar alternative low GWP refrigerants R-1234yf, R-1234ze(E), and R-450A. According to the literature review, R-513A and R-1234yf perform almost equally well in terms of heat transfer during pool boiling. • Heat transfer coefficient of R32 is 50 % higher than that of R410A in 1 mm chevron depth. • Heat transfer coefficient of R410A increases monotonically with mass flux, while that of R32 doesn't. • At low mass flux pressure drop of R32 exceeds that of R410A; the opposite applies at high mass flux. • Some correlations work well with R32 and R410A condensation in small gap plate heat exchangers. Compact brazed plate heat exchangers (BPHEs) with low chevron depths are widely used in new heat pumps and air-conditioners for reducing inventory and improving efficiency. This study analyses the complete condensation of R410A and R32 inside BPHEs with a chevron depth of 1 mm. The effects of the mass flux and chevron patterns (V-shaped and W-shaped) on the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) and frictional pressure drop are investigated. The HTC of R32 is 30–50 % higher than that of R410A, which has a 10–20 % higher friction factor at high mass fluxes and vice versa at low mass fluxes. The HTC of R410A monotonically increases with the mass flux, whereas that of R32 does not. The W-shaped pattern results in 30 % and 15 % higher pressure drops compared with the V-shaped pattern for R410A and R32, respectively. The friction factor of R32 decreases more sharply than that of R410A as the mass flux increases, particularly at low mass fluxes. The correlations developed by Longo et al. and Zhang et al. show the best agreement with the experimental data for the HTCs of R32 and R410A, respectively, with mean absolute percentage deviations (MAPDs) of 15 %. The friction factor correlation of Zhang et al. accurately predicts the pressure drop of R32 for the W-shaped and V-shaped patterns. In addition, it accurately predicts the pressure drop of R410A for the W-shaped pattern, with an MAPD of less than 10 %, but over-estimates it by 37 % for the V-shaped pattern. Nowadays, miniaturization of high-performance electronic devices leads to higher heat generation, which needs efficient cooling to maintain device temperature below its operating temperature. This work proposed an efficient cooling technique using two-phase flow boiling in a recharging microchannel (RMC) and compared its performance with the conventional simple microchannel (SMC). A three-dimensional numerical investigation is carried out using the volume-of-fluid multiphase model and evaporation–condensation phase-change model in ANSYS Fluent V15. Water with mass fluxes of 100 and 500 kg/(m2·s) enters through the microchannel at inlet subcooling of 5 °C, whereas the substrate bottom surface is subjected to constant heat flux in the range of 10–40 W/cm2. The water saturation temperature is considered as 50 °C, corresponding to the saturation pressure of 12.352 kPa. Results reveal that the RMC shows enhanced heat transfer coefficient, reduced thermal resistance, reduced wall superheat, and reduced substrate temperature compared to SMC. Besides, the RMC shows a reduced pressure drop than the SMC at lower mass flux, whereas it shows an increased pressure drop at higher mass flux. The flow boiling instabilities can mitigate during the bubbly flow regime in RMC. This study suggests the possible application of flow boiling in RMC to cool high-performance electronic devices. Boiling is a phase change heat transfer process that transfers latent heat quickly, making it suitable for use in various heat transfer systems. An important worry for the boiling performance degradation is the durability of the artificial nano-/microporous interfaces concerning the bottom surface. This study therefore proposes a novel three-step surface creation process (chemical etching, electroplating, and sintering process). Wet/chemical etching is first used to form three distinct micro/nanostructured substrates (ES#1, 2, 3). The most effective etched substrate (ES#3) is again employed as a cathode for the electrochemical depositing process or next-of-surface manufacturing. To strengthen the link between the etched layer (ES#3) and the surface of the coating (copper-alumina), the electroplating produced substrate (ES#4) is sintered in a predetermined environment. The enhanced boiling efficiency obtained on ES#4 is attributable to the appropriate bonding among ES#3 and electroplated nanoparticles (Cu-Al2O3). By maintaining a consistent temperature across the heater's topmost layer and the fin tip, the reduction in resistance at the intermediate level brought on by appropriate binding increases the rate of heat transfer. The critical heat flux (CHF) and heat transfer coefficient (HTC) improvements for ES#4 over bare copper are 184% and 216%, respectively. Additionally, the impact of certain macro- and micro-scale restrictions on the occurrence of flow boiling heat transfer is examined. The ES#4 surface showed better stability during repeated thirty testing cycles, as seen by the much smaller decline in superheat temperatures (1.2 °C) and wettability (32° to 33.7°). The effects of boiling water treatment on the physical properties of Quercus variabilis virgin cork (Qv VC) were examined and compared with those of Quercus suber reproduction cork (Qs RC). The water treatment was conducted at 100 °C for 1 h. Qv VC showed a significantly higher dimensional change in the three directions and lower weight loss than Qs RC by boiling water treatment. Untreated and boiled Qv VC showed higher density, air-dried moisture content, red/green (a*) and yellow/blue (b*) chromaticity, overall color change, shrinkage in all three directions, moisture adsorption on the entire surface, and swelling per 1% moisture content than untreated and boiled Qs RC. However, the lightness (L*) and water absorption on each surface were higher for Qs RC than for Qv VC. Moisture adsorption on each surface was comparable before and after heat treatment for both species. After boiling water treatment, the air-dried moisture content, dimensions, volume shrinkage, water absorption, and moisture adsorption on each surface and the entire surface increased, whereas L*, a*, b*, and swelling per 1% moisture content decreased. High heat transfer coefficient (HTC) and critical heat flux (CHF) are achieved in liquid film boiling by coupling vibrant vapor bubbles with a capillary liquid film, which has thus received increased interest for thermal management of high-power electronics. Although some experimental progress has been made, a high-fidelity heat transfer model for liquid film boiling is lacking. This work develops a thermal-hydrodynamic model by considering both evaporation atop the wick and nucleate boiling inside the wick to simultaneously predict the HTC and CHF. Nucleate boiling is modeled with microlayer evaporation theory, where a unified scaling factor is defined to characterize the change of microlayer area with heat flux. The scaling factor η is found to be independent of wicking structure and can be determined from a few measurements. This makes our model universal to predict the liquid film boiling heat transfer for various micro-structured surfaces including micropillar, micropowder, and micromesh. This work not only sheds light on understanding fundamental mechanisms of phase-change heat transfer, but also provides a tool for designing micro-structured surfaces in thermal management. Boiling of the coolant at the hot surface provides relatively better cooling by absorbing latent heat along with convection heat transfer as compared to heat transfer under single-phase conditions. In boiling, the orientation of heated surface also plays a crucial role. Downward facing boiling is complex than upward facing boiling, as the detachment of the bubble inhibited due to the heater surface orientation. Consequently, the bubble residence time and interaction with other bubbles are different in such boiling conditions. Our experiments on a large downward facing flat surface (100 × 400 mm2) revealed unexplored boiling phenomena. The boiling process is dominated by a complex engulfing phenomenon, which is rarely reported in the past. The engulfing phenomena have been captured using high-speed photography, wherein, at low heat fluxes, it is observed that larger bubbles engulf small bubbles by opening their mouth and swallowing the small bubbles. However, at higher heat fluxes, this phenomenon disappears. A larger vapor blanket is formed due to engulfing of bubbles, which may lead to departure from nucleate boiling. This engulfing behavior depends on the heat flux and subcooling. With the increase in heat flux, it is found that the rate of vapor engulfing increases. We have attempted to explain the science behind such engulfing phenomenon based on the capillary pressure difference. These results are consistent at various subcooling. This research provides new insights into nucleate boiling and may help in developing advanced mathematical models for accurate heat transfer prediction on downward facing nucleate boiling. This study focused on two familiar items in our daily lives: grains and boiling water. Accurately measuring boiling dense granular beds requires specialized instruments and novel techniques. An annular vertical riser was used to boil granular films. The riser was filled with glass beads and then immersed in liquid water. The water is heated by inducing eddy currents at the base of the riser, which is composed of carbon steel. Beyond the critical electric current, Ic, the Lyapunov exponent of the time series of the measured temperature distributions within the granular films became positive. This indicates the chaotic behavior of the films. Slightly above Ic, patterned instabilities with affine fractal-like structures were observed in the boiling granular films. Chaotic boiling granular films manifested percolation and transition to turbulence. Computer simulations of the above system under the guidance of generative AI (GenAI) successfully reproduced many critical features of the experimental observations, which can be considered a significant breakthrough in the modeling and simulation of complex systems. Surface modification through pool boiling of nanofluid is an efficient technique in delaying critical heat flux and attaining high heat flux at lower wall superheat temperature. The method of involving phase interaction, bubble evolving and dynamics phenomenon, and distribution of vapor void fraction altogether is the motivation behind current topic. The present work will contribute to the recovery and reuse of the wastewater and incinerator heat, cooling of high heat flux generating micro-electronics chips, and cooling of fast breeder test reactors. In the present study, the nucleate pool boiling of SiO2/water and Al2O3/water nanofluid are studied numerically and the effect of wall superheat temperature and heat flux on active nucleation site density, bubble departure diameter, and bubble waiting time are studied. The effect of various heater surface material and nanofluid concentration on wall superheat temperature and heat transfer coefficient are also investigated. A two-phase Eulerian approach, heat flux wall-partitioning model, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute boiling model are considered to simulate the current model. The pool boiling of nanofluids resulted in the formation of nano-porous layer on heater surface because of microlayer evaporation process that enhanced the heat transfer coefficient and reduced the wall superheat temperature. The rapid progress of electronic devices has necessitated efficient heat dissipation within boiling cooling systems, underscoring the need for improvements in boiling heat transfer coefficient (HTC) and critical heat flux (CHF). While different approaches for micropillar fabrication on copper or silicon substrates have been developed and have shown significant boiling performance improvements, such enhancement approaches on aluminum surfaces are not broadly investigated, despite their industrial applicability. This study introduces a scalable approach to engineering hierarchical micro-nano structures on aluminum surfaces, aiming to simultaneously increase HTC and CHF. One set of samples was produced using a combination of nanosecond laser texturing and chemical etching in hydrochloric acid, while another set underwent an additional laser texturing step. Three distinct micropillar patterns were tested under saturated pool boiling conditions using water at atmospheric pressure. Our findings reveal that microcavities created atop pillars successfully facilitate nucleation and micropillars representing nucleation site areas on a microscale, leading to an enhanced HTC up to 242 kW m−2 K−1. At the same time, the combination of the surrounding hydrophilic porous area enables increased wicking and pillar patterning, defining the vapor–liquid pathways on a macroscale, which leads to an increase in CHF of up to 2609 kW m−2. In the pursuit of enhancing thermal management for miniaturized electronic devices, our study delves into the impact of entry effects on Ledinegg instability and flow maldistribution within parallel microchannels. Utilizing a coupled model that incorporates phase change and pressure drop dynamics in boiling flow, we examine microchannels characterized by a 50 length-to-diameter ratio and a 200 μm hydraulic diameter. Our findings unveil a significant influence of entry effects, which narrow the total flow excursion interval, thereby bolstering system stability. Specifically, as the heat flux escalates from 5 W/cm2 to 120 W/cm2, the entry effects increasingly mitigate flow instability and maldistribution in parallel channels, diminishing the total flow rate range susceptible to flow instability by 4.73% and 47.52%, while narrowing the total flow rate range corresponding to uneven flow distribution by 4.70% and 46.75%, respectively. Furthermore, entry effects expand the inlet subcooling range necessary for stabilizing the parallel channel system by 38.89% and 1000%. This research not only underscores the importance of considering entry effects in microchannel design but also opens avenues for further exploration into enhancing thermal management solutions. This study investigates the comparative analysis performance of three environmentally friendly refrigerants, R1270, R290, and R600a, in the context of flow boiling heat transfer (FBHT) and pressure gradients. The experiments employ copper microfin and smooth tubes, operating under varying conditions, including saturation temperatures (Tsat) of 6 and 15 °C, heat fluxes (HF) ranging from 13 to 30 kW.m−2, mass fluxes (MF) spanning 187 to 427 kg.m−2.s−1, and vapor quality from 0.1 to 1.0. Both tube types share identical dimensions - an outer diameter, inner diameter, and length of 7 mm, 6.14 mm, and 500 mm, respectively - facilitating a focused investigation into the impact of microfins on flow boiling characteristics. The results highlight noteworthy differences among the refrigerants, with the microfin tube exhibiting substantial enhancements in heat transfer coefficient (HTC), particularly pronounced with R1270 and R290. At the same time, the R600a demonstrates more HTC improvements than the smooth tube. Additionally, the microfin tube increases pressure gradients. The average enhancement factor (EF) for R600a, R290, and R1270 are 2.15, 1.95, and 1.9, respectively, while the average penalty factor (PF) for R600a, R290, and R1270 are 1.25, 1.3, and 1.35, respectively. The main objective of this study was to use flash boiling atomization as a new method to inject suspensions with high solid content into the high-power plasma flow. The water-based suspension was prepared with submicron titanium oxide particles with an average size of 500 nm. The investigated solid concentrations were 20, 40, 55 and 70 wt%. Two plasma torches operated at 33, 70 and 110 kW were used to investigate the effect of increasing power on the deposited microstructure and deposition efficiency. At low torch power, the deposition efficiency decreased with increasing solid concentration, and deposits with a high number of unmelted particles were obtained with 70 wt% suspensions. At high torch power, the deposition efficiency increased with increasing solid concentration, and dense deposits were obtained with 70 wt% suspensions. XRD analysis was performed on all deposits to determine the distribution of rutile and anatase phases. Previous studies have demonstrated that micro/nanostructured surfaces have great potential for heat transfer enhancement. However, simulating subcooled flow boiling on such surfaces is difficult owing to the lack of proper bubble characteristic parameter models, because most models used in flow boiling simulations were developed based on smooth surface conditions, which may limit their applications in engineering design. In this study, we improved upon one validated bubble characteristic parameter model suitable for subcooled flow boiling on smooth surfaces to adapt to the new hybrid micro/nanostructured surfaces proposed by Huang et al. ["Experimental investigation of a new hybrid structured surface for subcooled flow boiling heat transfer enhancement," Appl. Therm. Eng. 192, 116929 (2021)]. The new bubble characteristic parameter model incorporates both basic correction terms to account for boiling bubble behaviors and ad hoc parameters to account for other unknown effects. Through sensitivity analysis and detailed calibration, the model was simplified to a set of correlations and only one constant parameter. With this improved model, subcooled flow boiling heat transfer simulations were conducted for three target surface specifications under conditions of 4–10 MW/m2 incident heat flux and 1–5 m/s flow velocity and the related heat-transfer mechanisms were further compared and discussed. The maximum error between the simulation and experimental results remains less than 3.5%, indicating that the established model has considerable accuracy in predicting the heat transfer performance for this type of micro/nanostructured surface in high-heat-flux engineering design applications. The heat transfer enhancement for subcooled flow boiling on this type of hybrid micro/nanostructured surface is greatly beneficial owing to its proper organization of convection, evaporation, and quenching heat transfer. Interconnected microchannels (IMCs) in flow boiling have the advantages of optimized heat transfer performance, energy savings and high efficiency, compact size, and strong customizability. They provide new solutions for thermal management and heat transfer at the microscale and have broad application prospects. To further investigate the effect of microchannels with different numbers of transverse sections on the flow boiling heat transfer, we performed numerical simulations on a rectangular microchannel (RMC) and IMCs with 3, 5, and 7 transverse microchannels at high and low mass flux. It was found that fluid experiences similar bubble and slug flow in different numbers of IMCs and the RMC at low mass flux. At a heat flux of q = 90 W/cm2, the downstream regions of the IMCs produce vapor films that span the channels, obstructing the cross-section and weakening the flow exchange between the channels, which lead the heat transfer performance factor of IMC-3, reaching 148.43%, 110.04%, and 116.92% of the RMC, IMC-5, and IMC-7. Under high-quality flux, as the heat flux increases, the heat transfer coefficient increases and the pressure drop decreases due to the existence of lateral microchannels introduced in the interconnected microchannels. Whether at high or low mass flux, structural reasons pertaining to the RMC can easily lead to the accumulation of bubbles and the occurrence of slugs, and the flow boiling instability increases with the increase of heat flux, which leads to a pressure drop and heat transfer performance generally lower than that of IMCs under the same conditions. At q = 120 W/cm2, IMC-7 showed the best heat transfer enhancement. Its heat transfer performance factor was 129.37%, 120.594% and 107.98% of the RMC, IMC-3, and IMC-5, respectively. Heat dissipation and temperature uniformity are one of the key technologies for electronic equipment. With the rapid growth of computing demand and the wide application of multichip devices, heat sources are distributed discretely in space. The effects of heat source distribution, inlet fluid temperature and channel diameter on flow pattern, heat transfer and pressure drop are discussed in detail. The results show that intermittent flow tends to form around discrete heat sources, especially near the heat source which is far from the channel inlet. Moreover, the distance between discrete heat sources shouldn't be too close to avoid heat concentration, nor too far to make full use of latent heat. When the distance between two heat sources is 70 mm, the temperature distribution is appropriate, and the heat dissipation is the best in this study. For the discrete heat source far from the inlet, the heat transfer coefficient increases significantly when the inlet fluid temperature increases due to the preheating of another heat source. The recent advances in the growth of heat dissipation from microelectronic devices have led to the two-phase heat transfer method via nucleate boiling for better thermal management. In this study, the effect of surface wettability on the saturated pool boiling heat transfer performance is examined with deionized water. Three types of wettability surfaces are compared, i.e., superhydrophilic (SHPi), hydrophilic (HPi) and hydrophobic (HPo) surfaces. The SHPi surface is prepared by anodic oxidation of the copper surface, while the HPi and HPo surface is prepared by coating Cu–TiO2 and Cu–MWCNTs, respectively, on the copper surface using the electrochemical deposition method. The earliest incipience of nucleate boiling was observed with the HPo surface, while a most delayed onset of nucleation was obtained for the SHPi surface. The critical heat flux is found to be 1012 kW·m−2, 1251 kW·m−2, 1490 kW·m−2 and 1610 kW·m−2 corresponding to the plane copper, HPo, HPi and SHPi surfaces following the ascending order. The improved rewetting of the arid area underneath the formed vapour bubble caused a delay in the dry-out occurrence and resulted in a maximum critical heat flux for the SHPi surface. The maximum heat transfer coefficient of 88.42 kW·m−2·K−1, 64.7 kW·m−2·K−1 and 59.19 kW·m−2·K−1 have been observed for the HPi, HPo and SHPi surfaces, respectively, which translates to an increment of 60.2 %, 17.23 % and 7.25 %, respectively, as compared to plain surface. The SHPi surface induces the rightward shifting of the boiling curve as compared to the plane surface, which gives a lower heat transfer coefficient for a particular heat flux. To improve the efficiency of the heat exchanger tube, one smooth tube and four doubly enhanced tubes (EX1, EX2, EX3 and EX4) have been investigated for the pool boiling heat transfer experiments in this paper. The indicate that the pool boiling heat transfer coefficient of the doubly enhanced tubes increased visibly with the augmentation of heat flux through the bubble behavior. Heat transfer reinforcement effect of the doubly enhanced tubes are significantly better than that of the smooth tube. Additionally, pool boiling heat transfer coefficient can be further enhanced by raising the saturate temperature. Entropy generation minimization analysis demonstrates that the heat transfer characteristics of like T-shaped tubes (EX1 and EX2) are superior to that of low fin tubes (EX3 and EX4). Particularly, tube EX1 exhibits higher pool boiling heat transfer efficiency. It is observed that a reasonable fin pitch is more advantageous for improving heat transfer characteristics. This study experimentally investigated nucleate pool boiling heat transfer for a polished copper surface and water fluid couple under atmospheric pressure. The results were compared with the correlations in the literature. The experimental results were compared with the surface-liquid correlation constants Rohsenow, Pioro, Vachon, Griffith, and Das used for the temperature exceedance values. When the results of Griffith's correlation constant were compared with the experimental values, it was seen that it was the most appropriate correlation compared to other correlations, with a minimum and maximum error of 0.4-12%. In addition, Forster-Zuber, Pioro, Kutateladze old, Kutateladze new, Kruzhilin, and Cooper correlations were compared with experimental results regarding the heat transfer coefficient. Compared with the correlation proposed by Pioro for the heat transfer coefficient, it was calculated as the most suitable correlation with a minimum and maximum difference of 0.2-8%. Nucleate boiling is a phenomenon of significant importance in a broad range of industries. Increasing boiling performance parameters could lead to more efficient power plants and better electronics thermal management. However, difficulties associated with studying this extremely complex phenomenon have prevented a meaningful progress in the area of boiling heat transfer enhancement. In this paper, we implement a laser-based controlled bubble generation technique to enable accurate phenomenological studies of the boiling process. We present details of the transient focused-laser heating mechanism used to nucleate a microscale vapor embryo on the boiling surface. We present high-speed optical imaging data showing how this vapor embryo grows into a bubble using electrically applied background heat flux. Unlike the currently available artificial bubble generation approaches, which either generate unphysical bubbles or are extremely difficult to implement, we show that the laser-nucleated controlled single bubble demonstrates bubble ebullition characteristics closely representative of naturally occurring bubbles in nucleate pool boiling. As an alternative to surgical excision and magnetic resonance-guided thermal high-intensity focused ultrasound ablation of uterine leiomyoma, this work was aimed at pilot feasibility demonstration of use of ultrasound-guided boiling histotripsy for non-invasive non-thermal fractionation of human uterine leiomyoma ex vivo. A custom-made sector ultrasound transducer of 1.5-MHz operating frequency and nominal f -number F # = 0.75 was used to produce a volumetric lesion (two layers of 5 × 5 foci with a 1 mm step) in surgically resected human leiomyoma ex vivo. A sequence of 10 ms pulses (P +/ P –/ A s = 157/–25/170 MPa in situ) with 1% duty cycle was delivered N = 30 times per focus under B-mode guidance. The treatment outcome was evaluated via B-mode imaging and histologically with hematoxylin and eosin and Masson's trichrome staining. The treatment was successfully performed in less than 30 min and resulted in formation of a rectangular lesion visualized on B-mode images during the sonication as an echogenic region, which sustained for about 10 min post-treatment. Histology revealed loss of cellular structure, necrotic debris and globules of degenerated collagen in the target volume surrounded by injured smooth muscle cells. The pilot experiment described here indicates that boiling histotripsy is feasible for non-invasive mechanical disintegration of human uterine leiomyoma ex vivo under B-mode guidance, encouraging further investigation and optimization of this potential clinical application of boiling histotripsy. Ebullition transports large amounts of the potent greenhouse gas methane (CH 4 ) from aquatic sediments to the atmosphere. River beds are a main source of biogenic CH 4 , but emission estimates and the relative contribution of ebullition as a transport pathway are poorly constrained. This study meets a need for more direct measurements with a whole-year data set on CH 4 ebullition from a small stream in southern Germany. Four gas traps were installed in a cross section in a river bend, representing different bed substrates between undercut and slip-off slope. For a comparison, diffusive fluxes were estimated from concentration gradients in the sediment and from measurements of dissolved CH 4 in the surface water. The data revealed highest activity with gas fluxes above 1000 ml m - 2 d - 1 in the center of the stream, sustained ebullition during winter, and a larger contribution of ebullitive compared to diffusive CH 4 fluxes. Increased gas fluxes from the center of the river may be connected to greater exchange with the surface water, thus increased carbon and nutrient supply, and a higher sediment permeability for gas bubbles. By using stable isotope fractionation, we estimated that 12-44% of the CH 4 transported diffusively was oxidized. Predictors like temperature, air pressure drop, discharge, or precipitation could not or only poorly explain temporal variations of ebullitive CH 4 fluxes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The transport of methane from sediments to the atmosphere by rising gas bubbles (ebullition) can be the dominant, yet highly variable emission pathway from shallow aquatic ecosystems. Ebullition fluxes have been reported to vary in space and time, as methane production, accumulation, and bubble release from the sediment matrix is affected by several physical and bio-geochemical processes acting at different timescales. Time-series analysis and empirical models have been used for investigating the temporal dynamics of ebullition and its controls. In this study, we analyzed the factors governing the temporal dynamics of ebullition and evaluated the application of empirical models to reproduce these dynamics across different timescales and across different aquatic systems. The analysis is based on continuous high frequency measurements of ebullition fluxes and environmental variables in a mesotrophic subtropical and polymictic freshwater reservoir. The synchronization of ebullition events across different monitoring sites, and the extent to which ebullition was correlated to environmental variables varied throughout the three years of observations and were affected by thermal stratification in the reservoir. Empirical models developed for other aquatic systems could reproduce a limited fraction of the variability in observed ebullition fluxes (R2 < 0.3), however the predictions could be improved by considering additional environmental variables. The model performance depended on the timescale. For daily and weekly time intervals, a generalized additive model could reproduce 70 and 96% of ebullition variability but could not resolve hourly flux variations (R2 = 0.19). Lastly, we discuss the potential application of empirical models for filling gaps in ebullition measurements and for reproducing the main temporal dynamics of the fluxes. The results provide crucial information for emission estimates, and for the development and implementation of strategies targeting at a reduction of methane emissions from inland waters. [Display omitted] Despite the flourishing studies of droplet interfacial boiling, the boiling upon vibratory surfaces, which may cause vigorous liquid–vapor-solid interactions, has rarely been investigated. Enhanced boiling normally can be gained from rapid removal of vapor and disturbance of liquid–vapor interface. We hypothesize that the vibratory surfaces enhance both effects with new intriguing phenomena and thus, attain an enhanced boiling heat transfer. We experimentally investigated the impacting fluid dynamics and coupled heat transfer patterns of multiple droplets and a single droplet impinging on still and vibratory surfaces of various materials and different wettability. The boiling under vibratory surfaces with increased vibration velocity amplitude and enhanced wettability can be enhanced by 80% in heat transfer coefficient and Nusselt number, which is attributed to several reasons: shortened bubble lifespan, thinner and smaller bubbles, and enhanced disturbances in liquid–vapor interfaces. The vibration also delays the Leidenfrost point when the droplet impacts a descending surface, which shows that the droplet impact moment (vibration phase angle) is particularly crucial. The descending surface releases the generated vapor actively and facilitates liquid–solid contact, thereby delaying the Leidenfrost. From fundamentals to application, this article strengthens our understanding of vibrated interfacial boiling in scenarios closer to multiple natural processes and practical industries. The effects of boiling water treatment on the physical properties of Quercus variabilis virgin cork (Qv VC) were examined and compared with those of Quercus suber reproduction cork (Qs RC). The water treatment was conducted at 100 °C for 1 h. Qv VC showed a significantly higher dimensional change in the three directions and lower weight loss than Qs RC by boiling water treatment. Untreated and boiled Qv VC showed higher density, air-dried moisture content, red/green (a*) and yellow/blue (b*) chromaticity, overall color change, shrinkage in all three directions, moisture adsorption on the entire surface, and swelling per 1% moisture content than untreated and boiled Qs RC. However, the lightness (L*) and water absorption on each surface were higher for Qs RC than for Qv VC. Moisture adsorption on each surface was comparable before and after heat treatment for both species. After boiling water treatment, the air-dried moisture content, dimensions, volume shrinkage, water absorption, and moisture adsorption on each surface and the entire surface increased, whereas L*, a*, b*, and swelling per 1% moisture content decreased. Surfaces with micro/nano‐structures significantly enhance the critical heat flux of nucleate boiling by increasing the wickability of the liquid phase to delay film boiling. An alternative strategy, of removing surface bubbles at smaller sizes, is largely ignored. Here, they fabricate a rationally designed micro‐structured surface that enables the coalescence‐induced departure of microscopic vapor bubbles during the pool boiling of water at diameters an order of magnitude smaller than single‐bubble buoyant departure. Arrays of micro‐cavities or micro‐grooves serve as tailored nucleation sites to nucleate close‐packed vapor bubbles, which coalesce at unusually small sizes compared to a homogeneous surface. Two different modes of coalescence‐induced bubble departure are observed and modeled: capillary‐inertial jumping for smaller micro‐bubbles and buoyant‐inertial liftoff for larger micro‐bubbles. The rapid advancement of engineering systems has spurred the search for innovative thermal management solutions. Boiling, as a phase‐change heat transfer method, has shown promise in heat dissipation, but non‐functionalized surfaces struggle with increasing cooling demands. To improve heat dissipation efficiency across different heat loads, functionalized surfaces with tailored wettability have been proposed. Separately, superhydrophilic and superhydrophobic surfaces each offer benefits and drawbacks in boiling applications but combining them on a single "biphilic" surface simultaneously harnesses their advantages. In this study, laser‐functionalized copper surfaces with spatially tailored wettability are developed by combining two‐step laser texturing with a self‐assembled monolayer coating, while focus is placed on the impact of the size and pitch of superhydrophobic spots. The developed functionalized surfaces exhibit exceptional boiling performance with heat transfer coefficients up to 299 kW m−2 K−1, a 434% enhancement over untreated surfaces. Optimal ratios of superhydrophilic and superhydrophobic areas and optimal spot pitch are identified. Additionally, varying behavior at different heat flux levels is observed, emphasizing the importance of considering thermal loads when determining the optimal surface pattern. This advancement in performance, along with the rapid and cost‐effective functionalization process, represents a significant breakthrough for enhanced thermal management applications. This study investigated the effects of different processing methods on the quality and nutrition of soymilk, as well as the changes in storage stability (centrifugal sedimentation rate (CSR), viscosity, and particle size) and shelf‐life of soymilk at different storage temperatures (25°C, 35°C, 45°C, and 55°C). Results showed that soymilk processed via the repeated boiling‐to‐filtering method (RBFM) exhibited the highest protein content (3.89 g/100 g), carbohydrate content (1.27 g/100 g), and stability coefficient (0.950). The CSR and particle size of RBFM soymilk increased gradually during storage at different temperatures, while the viscosity and sensory score decreased. The correlation between the CSR and the sensory score of RBFM soymilk was the highest (R2 =.9868). The CSR was selected as the key indicator to predict the shelf‐life of RBFM soymilk. The average residual variation in RBFM soymilk shelf‐life based on the predictive model was 10.78%, indicating the strong accuracy of the model for predicting the shelf‐life of RBFM soymilk stored at temperatures ranging from 25–45°C. Phase Change Materials (PCMs) demonstrate significant potential as latent heat storage systems for direct steam generation. This investigation explores the heat transfer dynamics of an upward‐flowing heat transfer fluid (HTF) boiling within a vertical tube, concurrently examining the solidification process of PCM outside the tube. A two‐dimensional model of a shell and tube heat storage device is established for this purpose. The simulation employs the Volume of Fluid (VOF) model coupled with the Lee model to simulate HTF boiling inside the tube. Concurrently, the enthalpy‐porosity model is utilized to analyze the PCM solidification process. The findings reveal that PCM solidification and heat discharge are influenced by the temperature and thermal conductivity of the HTF, leading to uneven solidified PCM thickness along the tube's length over time. Additionally, variations in tube length, inlet velocity, and inlet temperature impact both the vapor quality of HTF and the thickness of solidified PCM. Tube length correlates with boiling time, affecting the accumulation of steam quality throughout the coupling process. Inlet velocity dictates the heat transfer of HTF with PCM within a limited distance, and insufficient heat exchange resulting in the cessation of HTF boiling. Inlet temperature determines the appropriate device size, lower inlet temperatures necessitate longer tubes to extend the heat charging duration until boiling initiation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Previous studies have demonstrated that altering the surface structure can enhance heat transfer. In this study, a square micropillar array with a homogeneous structure was designed for a long rectangular channel with a hydrodynamic diameter of 10 mm. Deionized water and HFE-7100 were used as working fluids for the study. The effect of flow rate and subcooling degree on flow boiling heat transfer performance is discussed. The bubble behavior of two different media was compared by visualization experiments. The results show that the square microcolumn array will delay the ONB point by increasing the heat transfer area and disturbing the main fluid, and improve the overall boiling heat transfer performance by 2–3 times. It was found that HFE-7100 boils better under low heat flow density, but its stable nuclear boiling time is shorter. Furthermore, the effects of volume flow and subcooling on heat transfer performance vary significantly at different stages of the boiling process. Before the ONB point, an increase in volume flow will increase the heat current density by 88.9% and reduce the boiling heat transfer stability. Gravity plays a crucial role in influencing bubble behavior and heat transfer in flow boiling, and its impact can vary significantly in aerospace settings. Therefore, this study aims to numerically investigate flow boiling heat transfer in a rectangular mini-channel under hyper-gravity conditions, specifically at 12 times the normal gravity. To accomplish this, a coupled volume-of-fluid and level set method is employed, taking into account fluid-solid conjugated heat transfer as well as a nucleus site density model derived from experimental data. By reproducing the flow pattern and heat transfer characteristics under different heat flux and flow rate conditions, the study unveils the effects of hyper-gravity on flow boiling heat transfer. When the flow rate is lower under hyper-gravity conditions, a notable phenomenon occurs wherein numerous bubbles detach from the heating wall and coalesce into a vapor film at the top of the mini-channel due to increased buoyancy. In contrast, under normal gravity, bubbles merge and slide on the heating wall, leading to the formation of a dry patch below. Consequently, hyper-gravity results in a lower wall superheat, and the disparity in average wall superheat between normal and high gravities escalates as the added heat flux rises. Notably, in the hyper-gravity environment, the frequent detachment of bubbles in the middle and downstream sections of the mini-channel leads to an initial increase in wall superheating, followed by a plateau along the flow direction. As the flow rate increases, the inertial force intensifies. However, intriguingly, the discrepancy in flow boiling heat transfer between normal and high gravities does not exhibit a monotonic decrease with the increasing flow rate. An axisymmetric multiple relaxation time lattice Boltzmann method utilizing the Shan-Chen pseudo-potential model is developed and combined with an axisymmetric finite difference approximation of the energy equation to form a hybrid method with a view toward studying axisymmetric nucleate boiling. The mechanism of phase change in the Shan–Chen model is investigated, and the model is validated by simulating a Stefan problem as well as simulations of quasi-steady film boiling with comparisons to established results. In this study, the lattice Boltzmann method is utilized to simulate flow boiling within a microchannel featuring a micro-pillar surface. This investigation aims to explore the impacts of micro-pillar shape and quantity on the flow boiling characteristics across various superheats and Reynolds numbers (Re). A systematic examination is conducted on three types of micro-pillars, five quantities of micro-pillars, four Re values, and 18 superheat levels. The mechanisms contributing to enhanced heat transfer in flow boiling are elucidated through a comprehensive analysis of bubble dynamics, temperature and velocity fields, local and transient heat fluxes, and boiling curves. Moreover, the critical heat fluxes (CHF) of all surfaces are evaluated to identify the superior micro-pillar configurations. The findings revealed that microchannels with micro-pillar surfaces induce more vortices compared to those with smooth surfaces, attributable to the combined effects of bubble dynamics and micro-pillars. Bubble patterns and boiling curves demonstrated the significant impact of micro-pillar geometrical shapes on the boiling regime and heat transfer performance. As flow boiling progressed, an increase in micro-pillar quantity and Re can mitigate the fluctuation and decline rate in transient heat flux, respectively. Among the three types of micro-pillar surfaces, the circular shape exhibited the highest flow boiling performance, followed by the triangular and rectangular shapes. For all surfaces, the CHF increased with Re, and each micro-pillar type displayed an optimal quantity for achieving maximum CHF, with the highest increase reaching 45.2%. There is limited research on the boiling heat transfer performance of their mixed working fluids. Therefore, this study focuses on the flow boiling heat transfer characteristics of the mixed working fluid R134a/R245fa under non-azeotropic conditions. Experimental methods were employed to investigate the boiling heat transfer performance of the alternative working fluids R1234yf/R1336mzz(Z) (including R245fa/R1234yf and R1234yf/R1336mzz(Z) mixed working fluids) and evaluate the feasibility of R1234yf and R1336mzz(Z) as substitutes for R134a and R245fa. The results indicate that among the three mixed refrigerants, R134a/R245fa exhibits the highest heat transfer coefficient, while R1234yf/R1336mzz(Z) shows the lowest heat transfer coefficient. However, the differences in heat transfer coefficients among these three are relatively small, and their overall trends under different operating conditions are similar. It is evident that R134a/R245fa, with its good thermodynamic performance and stability, still holds potential as a transitional working fluid. Explosive boiling is a fast-phase transition from an ultra-thin liquid film to vapor under an extremely high heat flux, which typically has been studied using the molecular dynamics simulation (MDS) method. The present MDS study investigated the explosive boiling of a liquid argon nanofilm over different solid copper surfaces with different nanowall patterns, including parallel and cross nanowalls. For each surface, atomic motion trajectories, the number of liquid and vapor argon atoms, heat flux, and, mainly, the onset time of explosive boiling were investigated. The simulation results indicated that explosive boiling occurs earlier on parallel and cross nanowall surfaces than on an ideally smooth surface, regardless of the topology and configuration of the nanowalls. Moreover, the results revealed that by using the cross nanowall surfaces, the onset time of explosive boiling decreased by 0.7–4% compared to the parallel nanowall surfaces. In addition, it was found that the onset time of explosive boiling strongly depends on the potential energy barrier and the movement space between nanowalls for both parallel and cross nanowall surfaces. Furthermore, the simulation findings showed that even though increasing the height of cross nanowalls increases the heat flux and temperature of the fluid argon domain, it does not necessarily result in a shorter onset time for explosive boiling. These findings demonstrate the capability of cross nanowall surfaces for explosive boiling, thereby being utilized in future surface design for thermal management applications. Enhancing the flow boiling critical heat flux (CHF) is beneficial to the economics and safety margins of many industrial applications cooled by boiling heat transfer. While many studies have shown that surfaces with hydrophilic nanoscale and micro-scale features can enhance CHF in pool boiling, it is still not clear how these engineered surfaces affect the CHF in subcooled flow boiling at ambient pressure, let alone high-pressure conditions. Here, two nano-engineered surfaces, i.e., a surface coated with a porous layer of hydrophilic silica nanoparticles and a surface coated with zinc oxide nanowires, were tested. Flow boiling tests with a 10 K subcooling and a mass flux of 1000 kg/(m2·s) were conducted at 1 bar and 4 bars using infrared thermometry diagnostics. At 1 bar, the CHF enhancement is around 15% for both coatings. At 4 bars, the CHF enhancement is around 17% for the nanowire surface, and around 25% for the nano-porous surface. Infrared thermometry measurements reveal that the CHF enhancement comes from an increase of both two-phase heat transfer and single-phase heat transfer mechanisms, which is due to a change of bubble dynamics on the nanoengineered surfaces. The working fluid used was HFE-7000 and experimental measurements were carried out inside a 6 mm sapphire tube coated externally with indium-tin-oxide (ITO) for Joule heating. The range of vapor quality, mass flux, and heat flux investigated were 0.15 − 0.7, 75–400 kg/(m2s), and 0.5 − 3.0 W/cm2, respectively. Theoretical models for predicting HTC in upward and downward flows were developed using heat-flux-dependent wall shear stress correlations and roll-wave-velocity-based interfacial damping function. It was found that interfacial damping depends on the Reynolds number of the liquid film. The proposed models predicted over 96% of the measured HTC within ±20% in both upward and downward flows and reproduced the heat flux dependence of the HTC. This paper presents an experimental investigation of heat transfer coefficient and dryout inception during flow boiling of R134a in a circular channel with an internal diameter of 500 μ m for horizontal, 45° inclined, and vertical upward flows. The microchannel was heated by imposing the wall temperature by flowing hot water counter-currently to the test fluid through an annular region containing the test section. Experiments were performed for mass velocities ranging from 350 to 600 kg/(s·m2), heat fluxes up to 46 kW/m2, saturation temperature of 30 °C, and vapor qualities from 0 to 1. The experimental data were parametrically analyzed, and the effects of the experimental parameters (heating method, mass velocity, heat flux, and channel orientation) were identified. Almost similar heat transfer behaviors were found under conditions of imposing wall temperature and heat flux through the Joule effect. The effect of the flow orientation on the heat transfer coefficient prior to the dryout inception was negligible. The heat transfer coefficient increases with increasing vapor quality, heat flux, and mass velocity. The critical heat flux exhibited similar values independently of the flow orientation. Moreover, the critical heat fluxes increases as the dryout inception vapor quality reduces, regardless of the flow orientation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work investigates the bubble dynamics during pool boiling from isolated cavities on a horizontal silicon substrate with three surface coatings, silicon oxide, Perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane, and silica nanoparticles. The experiments were conducted with FC-72 under various superheat degrees. In the case of vertical coalescence, coalescences at the boundary between the departed bubble and the subsequent nucleated bubble were observed and analyzed. Vertical coalescence appears with lower superheat degrees on Perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane coated surfaces due to the faster initial bubble growth than on the other surfaces. However, the vertical coalescence has a limited effect on the bubble departure diameter, which is nearly kept constant at around 0.6 mm. In the case of horizontal coalescence, bubbles growing on the silica nanoparticles coated surface are able to coalesce for small cavity spacing with lower superheat degree than other surfaces. Coalescing bubbles from cavities spaced 0.50 mm apart can detach just after coalescence, while for a shorter spacing of 0.25 mm, bubbles remain attached to the surface and further growth is needed for their detachment. Based on the analysis of energy removal per unit of area, the optimal heat transfer performance may be achieved when the cavities spacing is approximate to the single bubble departure diameter. The paper considers the fragmentation of fluid films and, in particular, the used similarity numbers that characterize the process of fragmentation. Based on the analysis of a previously proposed mathematical model for a rotating fluid film evaporating in the Leidenfrost regime, the Sf criterion is proposed. New linear hydrazinocarbonothioyl derivatives of maleopimarimides were synthesized in high yields by the interaction of acyl isothiocyanates of 2-allyl- and 2-benzylmaleopimarimides with acetohydrazide and hydrazide of 4-methoxybenzoic acid. 1,3,4-Thiadiazole derivatives were synthesized by boiling hydrazinocarbonothioyl derivatives of maleopimarimides with a catalytic amount of concentrated H2SO4 in ethanol.
