Postexercise hydration is fundamental to replace fluid loss from sweat. This study evaluated rehydration and gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms for each of three beverages: water (W), sports drink (SD), and skimmed, lactose-free milk (SLM) after moderate-intensity cycling in the heat. Sixteen college students completed three exercise sessions each to lose ≈2% of their body mass. They drank 150% of body mass loss of the drink assigned in randomized order; net fluid balance, diuresis, and GI symptoms were measured and followed up for 3 hr after completion of fluid intake. SLM showed higher fluid retention (∼69%) versus W (∼40%; p <.001); SD (∼56%) was not different from SLM or W (p >.05). Net fluid balance was higher for SLM (−0.26 kg) and SD (−0.42 kg) than W (−0.67 kg) after 3 hr (p <.001), resulting from a significantly lower diuresis with SLM. Reported GI disturbances were mild and showed no difference among drinks (p >.05) despite ingestion of W (1,992 ± 425 ml), SD (1,999 ± 429 ml), and SLM (1,993 ± 426 ml) in 90 min. In conclusion, SLM was more effective than W for postexercise rehydration, showing greater fluid retention for the 3-hr follow-up and presenting with low-intensity GI symptoms similar to those with W and SD. Purpose: Successful participation in taekwondo (TKD) requires athletes to possess quick decision-making abilities and demonstrate technical proficiency during competition. Dehydration, occurring during both training and competition, is widely recognized to have various negative effects. Methods: This study investigated the impact of different levels of dehydration on cognitive function, as measured by the Vienna Test System, and the specific performance of kicking techniques among TKD athletes. Using a randomized crossover design, 12 participants were involved in the study. Before and after 1 hour of training at 80% of maximal heart rate, participants were weighed and provided urine samples. All participants were randomly assigned to 3 different hydration conditions: the euhydrated (EUH) group had unrestricted access to fluid consumption, while the hypohydrated (HYP) and severely HYP (S-HYP) groups experienced reductions of 2.0% and 4.0% of their initial body weight, respectively. Results: The EUH group exhibited better reaction speed in reaction-time test-form S1 than the HYP and S-HYP groups. Notably, the EUH group demonstrated a significantly higher success rate in the front-side kick (EUH 98%, HYP 90%, S-HYP 88%; P <.05). However, the success rates of back roundhouse kick and free head kick were similar among the 3 statuses. Furthermore, postexercise heart rates were found to be significantly higher in the HYP and S-HYP groups compared with the EUH group. Conclusions: This study provides insight into the negative effects of dehydration on cognitive function and TKD-specific performance. Purpose: We examined fluid intake, the relation between body mass (BM) loss and performance, and core temperature in young triathletes during a competition in tropical climate. Methods: Fluid intake and pre and post BM were measured in 35 adolescent athletes, and core temperature was measured in one female and one male. Results: Mean urine specific gravity (1.024 [0.007]) indicated that athletes were in suboptimal state of hydration upon waking. Race time was 73.2 (8.0) minutes. BM decreased by 0.6 (0.3) kg (P <.05). Fluid intake (528.5 [221.6] mL) replaced 47% of the fluid loss (1184.9 [256.4] mL) and was higher during run (11.5 [6.6] mL·min−1) compared to bike (7.3 [3.1] mL·min−1), P <.01. Loss in BM was ≥1.0% in 66% and ≥1.5% in 29% of the athletes. Males showed a moderate association between percentage loss in BM and finishing time (r = −.52), higher sweat rates (1.0 [0.3] L·h−1), and faster times (69.4 [7.5] min; P <.05). Core temperature rose to 40.1 °C in the female and 39.6 °C in the male. Conclusion: Young triathletes competing in a hot/humid climate became mildly to moderately dehydrated and hyperthermic even when water and sports drinks were available but did not show symptoms of heat illness. The study aimed to explore the associations between water intake and body composition and differences of body composition in different water itake and hydration statuses among young male athletes. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 111 young male athletes in Beijing, China. Total drinking fluids (TDF) and water from food were assessed using a 7-day, 24-h fluid intake record questionnaire and the duplicate portion method, respectively. The osmolality of 24-hour urine and blood samples was tested. Body composition was measured using a bioelectrical impedance analyzer twice at 5-min intervals. Participants were divided into two groups based on the recommendations of total water intake (TWI) and TDF in China, as well as into three groups based on 24-h urine osmolality. Pearson's correlation coefficients were calculated to determine the relationship between water intake and body composition. Chi-square tests and Student's t -tests were used to compare differences. A total of 109 participants completed the study. TDF (r = 0.230, p = 0.016; r = 0.234, p = 0.014; r = 0.242, p = 0.011) and TWI (r = 0.275, p = 0.004; r = 0.243, p = 0.011; r = 0.243, p = 0.011) were positively correlated with total body water (TBW), intracellular water (ICW), and extracellular water (ECW). TBW/body weight (BW) was positively associated with TDF percentage of BW (TDF/BW) (r = 0.267, p = 0.005), water from food percentage of BW (r = 0.217, p = 0.024), and TWI percentage of BW (TWI/BW) (r = 0.316, p = 0.001). Participants who met the TDF recommendation of China had 1.3 kg higher skeletal muscle mass (SMM), 0.9 kg higher ICW, and 0.5% higher TBW/BW than those who did not (all p < 0.05), with fat-free mass (FFM) and TBW being higher (p = 0.051; p = 0.050). Those who met the TWI recommendation of China had 1.3 kg higher SMM, 2.4 kg higher FFM, 1.1 kg higher ICW, 0.6 kg higher ECW, and 1.7 kg higher TBW than their counterparts (all p < 0.05). Moderate associations were found between water intake and body composition. No significant differences were observed among participants in three hydration statuses (all p > 0.05). Participants who met the TWI or TDF recommendations had better body composition distribution than their counterparts. Objective: Schools are considered an important setting for stimulating healthy weight. The current study is unique in examining effects of a multi-component school-based social network intervention on children's body mass index z-scores (zBMI). Methods: Four schools were randomly allocated to one of four conditions: a social network intervention using influence agents focusing on water consumption, physical activity, a combination of the two, or a passive control condition. Participants included a total of 201 6- to-11-year-old children (53.7% girls; Mage = 8.51, SDage = 0.93). At baseline, 149 (76.0%) participants had a healthy weight, 29 (14.8%) had overweight and 18 (9.2%) had obesity. Results: Linear mixed effect models indicated that a multi-component school-based social network intervention targeting both water consumption and physical activity was most effective in decreasing children's zBMI. Conclusion: This study suggests that schools can contribute to the intervention of childhood obesity—even without involving the parents—by targeting both children's water consumption and physical activity through influential peers, but more research is needed to identify mechanisms of change. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death among communicable and noncommunicable diseases, and its prevalence is going to rise even more by 2030. The discovery of different "functional" foods containing a plethora of bioactive compounds is considered an ally in the effort to reduce the global CVD burden in the context of primary prevention. It has been about 3 decades since the observation that red wine consumption in French population could lead to lower coronary heart disease risk despite the high dietary consumption of saturated fats, known as the "French paradox." Since then, numerous epidemiological studies, mainly observational, have emerged in order to investigate this association with great enthusiasm. However, due to the nature of these studies, the scientific community has raised concerns about the methodological approach of the studies and thus the generalization of their results. Therefore, the current review aims to summarize some of the major methodological issues deriving from observational studies on the association between red wine consumption and cardiovascular health and to highlight the importance of higher quality study design in the general effort of drawing safer conclusions on this topic. Background: Although there are many reasons for extubation failure, maintaining negative or lower positive fluid balances 24 hours before extubation may be a key measure for successful extubation. Aim: To assess the predictive value of fluid balance before extubation and its outcome in mechanically ventilated cases in the intensive care unit (ICU). Study Design: This retrospective cohort study involved collecting clinical data from patients undergoing mechanical ventilation in Lanzhou general adult ICU from January 2022 to December 2022. Based on extubation outcomes, the patients were divided into a successful extubation group and a failed extubation group. Their fluid balance levels 24 h before extubation were compared with analyse the predictive value of fluid balance on extubation outcomes in patients undergoing mechanical ventilation. Results: In this study, clinical data from 545 patients admitted to a general adult ICU were collected. According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 265 (48.6%) patients were included, of which 197 (74.3%) were successfully extubated; extubation was unsuccessful in 68 (25.7%) patients. The total intake and fluid balance levels in patients in the failed extubation group 24 h before extubation were significantly higher than those in the successful extubation group, with a median of 2679.00 (2410.44–3193.50) mL versus 2435.40 (1805.04–2957.00) mL, 831.50 (26.25–1407.94) mL versus 346.00 (−163.00–941.50) mL. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis showed that the optimal cut‐off value for predicting extubation outcomes was 497.5 mL (sensitivity 64.7%, specificity 59.4%) for fluid balance 24 h before extubation. The area under the ROC curve was 0.627 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.547–0.707). Based on the logistic regression model, cumulative fluid balance >497.5 mL 24 h before extubation could predict its outcomes in mechanically ventilated patients in the ICU (OR = 5.591, 95% CI [2.402–13.015], p <.05). Conclusions: The fluid balance level 24 h before extubation was correlated with the outcome of extubation in mechanically ventilated patients in the ICU. The risk of extubation failure was higher when the fluid balance level was >497.5 mL. Relevance to Clinical Practice: Tracheal intubation is a crucial life support technique for many critically ill patients, and determining the appropriate time for extubation remains a challenge for clinicians. Although there are many reasons for extubation failure, acute pulmonary oedema caused by continuous positive fluid balance and volume overload is one of the main reasons for extubation failure. Therefore, it is very important to study the relationship between fluid balance and extubation outcome to improve the prognosis of patients with invasive mechanical ventilation in ICU. Purpose: The current study investigated whether sustained mild dehydration affects thermoregulatory function and cognitive performance during prolonged exercise. Methods: Twelve young adults performed a test consisting of three sets of 20-min exercise with 2-min intervals under euhydrated (control, CON) and mildly dehydrated conditions (MDEH) at an ambient temperature of 30 °C and 60% relative humidity. MDEH was established by restricting water intake for 24 h, resulting in urine specific gravity of ≥ 1.020. Heart rate (HR), mean arterial blood pressure (MAP), skin blood flow (SkBF), sweat rate (SR) on the chest and forearm, and ear canal and mean skin surface temperatures (Tear and mean Tskin, respectively) were continuously recorded. For each exercise set, thermal and humid sensations and thermal discomfort were assessed using visual analog scales (VAS), and the rating of perceived exertion (RPE) was estimated. Cognitive performance on the Go/No-Go (easy) and incongruent Stroop (difficult) tasks was assessed before and after the test. Results: No differences were observed in HR, MAP, SkBF, SR, Tear, and mean Tskin between the CON and MDEH. Thermal and humidity sensations, thermal discomfort, and RPE were higher in MDEH than in CON. Moreover, response time to the Stroop task was prolonged in MDEH. Conclusion: These findings suggest that sustained mild dehydration does not affect autonomic thermoregulation during exercise. Conditioned taste aversion (CTA) is a robust associative learning; liquid deprivation during this conditioning allows researchers to obtain readable measures of associative learning. Recent research suggests that thirst could be a crucial motivator that modulates conditioning and memory extinction processes, highlighting the importance of the body's internal state during learning. Furthermore, the histaminergic system is one of the major modulatory systems controlling several behavioral and neurobiological functions, such as feeding, water intake, and nociception. Therefore, this research aimed to assess the effect of H3 histaminergic receptor activation in the insular cortex (IC) during CTA. For this, we conditioned adult male Wistar rats under two regimens: water deprivation and water ad libitum. A classical CTA protocol was used for water deprivation. Before CTA acquisition, 10 μM R-α-methylhistamine (RAMH), an H3 receptor agonist, was injected into the IC. Results showed that RAMH injections decreased CTA in water-deprived rats without affecting the significant aversion conditioning in rats that were given water ad libitum. Moreover, RAMH accelerated the process of aversive memory extinction under ad libitum water conditions. According to our findings, the degree of liquid satiety differentially affected taste-aversive memory formation, and H3 histamine receptors were more involved under water deprivation conditions during acquisition. However, these receptors modulated the strength of aversive conditioning by altering the rate of aversive memory extinction in the absence of deprivation. In conclusion, histaminergic activity in the IC may influence taste memory dynamics through different mechanisms depending on the degree of liquid satiety or deprivation during conditioning. Simple Summary: The use of volcanic clays as a feed additive in ruminant diets has been gaining greater interest in recent years. Due to their mineral profile and physicochemical nature, they have present characteristics that can promote health and performance improvements. However, there exists a controversy around the results observed with clays as feed additive on feed efficiency in ruminants. It has been argued that the magnitude of the response to clay supplementation can be mediated by several factors, among them the concentration and mineral profile. AZOMITE is a volcanic clay which has been reported to contain over 70 measurable minerals, including Fe, Mg, Mn, Se, Zn, Cu, and rare earth elements (REEs) such as lanthanides, in such a way that it contains up to five times more mineral elements than other clays commonly used as feed additives. In this study, it can be determined that AZOMITE clay can be included up to 1.5% in finishing diets for lambs without negative effects on the intake of water and feed; an inclusion of 0.75% in the diet showed greater improvements in feed efficiency and dietary energy utilization, whereas an inclusion of 1.50% showed the greater improvements to hot carcass weight and dressing percentage without effects on visceral organ mass. The aim of this study was to evaluate growth performance, dietary energy utilization, and carcass characteristics (carcass weight, dressing percentage, and visceral organ mass) of feedlot lambs fed different levels of AZOMITE (AZO), a source of volcanic clay composed of hydrated sodium calcium aluminosilicate, the same as that included in a finishing diet. For this reason, 36 Pelibuey × Katahdin crossbred intact male lambs (18.81 ± 3.04 kg initial weight) were used in a feeding trial lasting 81 d. Lambs were grouped by initial weight and assigned within six weight groupings to 18 pens in a randomized complete block design. Diets, offered ad libitum, were corn-based finishing diets with an 88:12 concentrate-to-forage ratio supplemented as follows: 1) no AZO inclusion (CTRL), 2) AZO inclusion at a 0.75% level (0.75AZO) in diet dry matter, 3) AZO inclusion at a 1.50% level (1.5AZO) in diet dry matter. Cracked corn was replaced by AZO. After the feeding trial was finished, lambs were slaughtered and carcass weight was registered and dressing percentage was calculated. The data were analyzed as a randomized complete block design, with the pen as the experimental unit. Water consumption and dry matter intake were not affected (p ≥ 0.11) by supplemental AZO. The incorporation of AZO into the diet increased gain efficiency and observed dietary net energy (NE), being maximal with 0.75% AZO inclusion (quadratic effect, p = 0.02). The observed-to-expected dietary NE in the control group was as anticipated (1.00) according to the estimated energy based on the ingredient composition in diet, while in the 0.75AZO group, the observed dietary energy was 6% above expected, indicating a greater efficiency in energy utilization destined to growth (quadratic effect, p = 0.006). Lambs that were fed the AZO treatment showed an improvement (linear effect, p = 0.04) in hot carcass weight (HCW), and tended (linear effect, p = 0.06) to improve dressing percentage (DP) as AZO was increased in the diet. Visceral organ mass was not affected by the treatments. It is concluded that AZOMITE clay can be included up to 1.5% in finishing diets for lambs without negative effects on the intake of water and feed. Lambs that received diets supplemented with 0.75% AZO showed greater improvements in feed efficiency and dietary energy utilization, but an inclusion of 1.50% resulted in greater improvements to HCW and DP. This is the first report regarding the effects of AZO supplementation in the dietary energy utilization of fattening hairy lambs. Further research about the effects of AZO supplementation on ruminal and total tract digestion, carcass and meat quality, and the health of lambs is needed in order to more deeply understand the effects of AZO on its productivity performance. 1. Dietary electrolyte balance (DEB) has been used to minimise problems in broiler chickens raised in warm climates. However, there is a need to determine the most appropriate DEB levels in these animals2. This study evaluated the influence of five DEB levels (110, 175, 240, 305 and 370 mEq/kg) on water intake (WI), zootechnical performance (feed intake, weight gain and feed conversion ratio), tibiotarsus bone variables (fresh bone weight, dry bone weight, bone length, mineral matter, Seedor index and bone strength) and intestinal histomorphometry (villus height (VH) and width (VW), crypt height (CH) and width (CW), internal and external muscularis) on broilers in two developmental phases (1–21 and 22–42 d of age). Additionally, the haematological profile (blood count and serum biochemistry), carcass yield, cuts and abdominal fat were assessed.3. Applying 370 mEq/kg DEB increased WI, VW in the jejunum and ileum and number of haemocytes at 21 d, while WI and VW in the duodenum and ileum at 42 d. In contrast, 110 mEq/kg increased chlorine concentrations at 21 d and leukocyte and heterophil numbers at 42 d.4. In summary, the 370 mEq/kg level was the most appropriate for broiler homoeostasis raised under natural heat stress, as the best results were found on WI and VW variables. Tomographic imaging of time-evolving samples is a challenging yet important task for various research fields. At the nanoscale, current approaches face limitations of measurement speed or resolution due to lengthy acquisitions. We developed a dynamic nanotomography technique based on sparse dynamic imaging and 4D tomography modeling. We demonstrated the technique, using ptychographic x-ray computed tomography as its imaging modality, on resolving the in situ hydration process of polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) catalyst. The technique provides a 40-time increase in temporal resolution compared to conventional approaches, yielding 28 nm half-period spatial and 12 min temporal resolution. The results allow a quantitative characterization of the water intake process inside PEFC catalysts with nanoscale resolution, which is crucial for understanding their electrochemical mechanisms and optimizing their performance. Golden Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) are a well-established animal model for human infections with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) due to their susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection, robust virus replication and pathological manifestations similar to human COVID-19 pneumonia. To investigate the physiological changes upon infection in this animal model, we explored the alterations in daily energy expenditure (DEE), water turnover, body mass, body temperature, and locomotor activity in non-infected and SARS-CoV-2 infected Golden Syrian hamsters for four days post SARS-CoV-2. DEE was measured using the doubly labelled water method, which allows for the accurate estimation of carbon dioxide production and, consequently, energy expenditure in animals. Additionally, we investigated total water intake (TWI), which comprises drinking water, preformed water in food, and metabolic water. Using intraperitoneally implanted data loggers, we also monitored body core temperature and locomotor activity in some of the animals. Here we provide evidence for infected hamsters exhibiting significantly lower DEE and TWI compared to non-infected animals. We also observed an increase in body weight in the non-infected animals, while infected animals experienced weight loss. This study examines the impact of foreign and local investors' interference in the national development as a form of President Joko Widodo's government program on social equality and environmental support for Indonesia's lower-level communities. Joko Widodo as the Indonesian President since the beginning of his term initiated infrastructure development throughout Indonesia, inviting foreign and local investors. These investors can rapidly raise the value of the Indonesian economy. The high value of the Indonesian economy also hurts various communities, especially on the social level of Indonesian society. Social equality in Indonesia has not achieved a balanced value among its people, which leads to social inequality in all aspects of social welfare of the Indonesian people.. Environmental support for people who experience social inequality is not achieved, this can be viewed in terms of shelter, food, clean water intake, and several other aspects that do not support the lives of people with social inequality. This research aims to realize how influential investors and the development of the Indonesian nation are on their communities, especially among the lower level who are not reached by the Indonesian government as a form of support for environmental welfare. The study recommends investors make breakthroughs that provide benefits for people with low social levels so that they do not experience further deterioration in life, the government must also play an effective role in realizing decent environmental support (green environment) to achieve social equality. Background and Aim: In tropical regions, the intrusion of saline from seawater (SW) due to global warming and sea level rise in recent years is an important natural factor influencing goat well-being. This study aimed to determine the effects of diluted SW in drinking water on the physiological responses and eating and drinking patterns of crossbred dairy goats under tropical conditions. Materials and Methods: Twenty dairy goats were divided into four groups (five animals each) based on body weight and milk yield. Animals received either fresh drinking water (SW0.0, control) or diluted SW at concentrations of 0.5% (SW0.5, low salinity), 1% (SW1.0, moderate salinity), and 1.5% (SW1.5, high salinity). The experiment was performed for 49 days (1st-7th week). Throughout this period, daily food and water intake were measured every day. In addition, blood collection was performed on day 25. Total urine and feces were collected from days 25 to 29. Meal and drinking patterns were determined on days 31 and 32. Results: Salinity did not influence dry matter intake throughout the experiment (p > 0.05). However, SW had a significant effect on eating patterns. The effect of SW on water intake (WI) was pronounced from the 2nd to 7th weeks of this experiment (p < 0.05). The water balance decreased and plasma antidiuretic hormone levels increased from SW1.5 to SW2.5 compared to the other treatments. Rectal temperature and respiration rate increased from 15:00 to 17:00 in SW1.5 patients. The concentrations of plasma electrolyte, creatinine, and heat shock protein 70 did not differ between treatments (p > 0.05). The urinary excretion of Na+ from SW1.5 and K+ and Cl-from SW1.0 was higher than that from SW0.0 and SW0.5 (p < 0.01). Conclusion: Lactating crossbred goats adapted to low and moderate SW by increasing urine volume and urinary electrolyte excretion (Uex), whereas animals responded to high SW by either increasing Uex or altering drinking patterns to minimize salt stress. Clay-based mortars are susceptible to water intake and exhibit low mechanical strength, presenting challenges in their application within the construction sector. This research addresses these vulnerabilities by investigating the combination of alkali activators with waterproofing agents, specifically a nano-clay and an acrylic emulsion, to enhance the properties of clay mortars. Alkali-activated materials are known for their superior mechanical properties and sustainable potential, especially when derived from low-cost by-products. Recent studies have focused on alkali activation using clays and soils as precursors to improve their physical and mechanical properties while increasing durability. However, the high absorbency of these mortars remains a concern, as it can lead to matrix degradation. Therefore, to address these problems, this research studied the combination of a highly alkaline activator (potassium metasilicate) with hydrophobic agents, such as a nano-clay and an acrylic emulsion, using two different clayey soils. The results indicated that potassium metasilicate (PO) enhanced the mechanical properties and stability for both aluminosilicate systems, while nano-clay (PONC) significantly reduced the capillary absorption through time, especially in A2 systems. The addition of acrylic emulsion (POD) proved highly effective in both systems, significantly improving durability. Aim: There is no universally accepted treatment consensus for haemorrhoids, and thus, management has been individualized all over the world. This study was conducted to assess a global view of how surgeons manage haemorrhoids. Methods: The research panel of the International Society of University Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ISUCRS) developed a voluntary, anonymous questionnaire evaluating surgeons' experience, volume and treatment approaches to haemorrhoids. The 44 multiple‐choice questionnaire was available for one month via the ISUCRS email database and the social media platforms Viber and WhatsApp. Results: The survey was completed by 1005 surgeons from 103 countries; 931 (92.6%) were in active practice, 819 (81.5%) were between 30 and 60 years of age, and 822 (81.8%) were male. Detailed patient history (92.9%), perineal inspection (91.2%), and digital rectal examination (91.1%) were the most common assessment methods. For internal haemorrhoids, 924 (91.9%) of participants graded them I–IV, with the degree of haemorrhoids being the most important factor considered to determine the treatment approach (76.3%). The most common nonprocedural/conservative treatment consisted of increased daily fibre intake (86.9%), increased water intake (82.7%), and normalization of bowel habits/toilet training (74.4%). Conservative treatment was the first‐line treatment for symptomatic first (92.5%), second (72.4%) and third (47.3%) degree haemorrhoids; however, surgery was the first‐line treatment for symptomatic fourth degree haemorrhoids (77.6%). Rubber band ligation was the second‐line treatment in first (50.7%) and second (47.2%) degree haemorrhoids, whereas surgery was the second‐line treatment in third (82.9%) and fourth (16.7%) degree symptomatic haemorrhoids. Rubber band ligation was performed in the office by 645(64.2%) of the participants. The most common surgical procedure performed for haemorrhoids was an excisional haemorrhoidectomy for both internal (87.1%) and external (89.7%) haemorrhoids – with 716 (71.2%) of participants removing 1, 2 or 3 sectors as necessary. Conclusion: Although there is no global haemorrhoidal treatment consensus, there are many practice similarities among the different cultures, resources, volume and experience of surgeons around the world. Simple Summary: It is vitally important that methods to combat climate change-induced effects on water availability are studied in agriculture. We have previously determined the voluntary water usage of modern broilers and, in this article, further explore the molecular differences between meat-type chickens that consume more or less water than average. We show here that sugar metabolites and the expression of glucose transporter genes in the kidneys are different between these birds. These differences can aid in the selection of birds that drink less water than average for the same feed intake and body weight gain. This could help reduce the use of water in the poultry industry. Molecular differences exist between birds with high residual water intake (HRWI) compared to those with low residual water intake (LRWI). Residual water intake (RWI) is defined as the difference between the water intake of a bird and the expected water intake corrected for metabolic body weight, feed intake, and body weight gain. Tissue metabolomic analysis revealed significantly increased kidney glucose, fructose, and arabitol in the LRWI group compared to the HRWI group. mRNA expression analysis of apical sodium glucose cotransporters SGLT1, SGLT4, SGLT5, and SGLT6 showed decreased expression of SGLTs 1, 5, and 6 in LRWI birds (p < 0.05), whereas SGLT4 expression was increased compared with HRWI birds (p < 0.01). An analysis of basal glucose transporters GLUT1, GLUT2, GLUT5, and GLUT9 showed significantly increased GLUT2 expression in LRWI birds compared with HRWI birds (p < 0.01). We postulate that SGLT4 is the main apical transporter in chicken kidneys and that its increased expression reduces these birds' need for water, resulting in less drinking. This is balanced by the increased expression of the basal transporter GLUT2, indicating better glucose retention, which may partly explain the physiological mechanism behind why these birds drink less water. Background: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a chronic, relapsing disease, highly comorbid with anxiety and depression. The bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST) and Crh+ neurons in this region play a key role in chronic ethanol‐induced increases in volitional intake, hypothesized to be driven by emergent negative affective behaviors. Excitatory N‐methyl‐d‐aspartate receptors (NMDARs) are a major target of ethanol, and chronic ethanol exposure has been shown to regulate NMDAR function and expression. Specifically, GluN2D subunit‐containing NMDARs have emerged as a target of interest due to their limited distribution and potential roles in affective behavior. Methods: Male and female mice underwent a home cage chronic drinking forced abstinence model (CDFA) to assess the impact of 1 day or 2 weeks of ethanol abstinence on BNST synaptic transmission and BNST Grin gene expression. Constitutive and conditional BNST GluN2D knockout mice were used to assess the impact of GluN2D deletion on continuous access ethanol intake as well as negative affect behaviors, using the open field, elevated zero maze, and forced swim tasks. Results: We report here that excitatory transmission undergoes time‐dependent upregulation in BNST Crh+ cells. Further, knockdown of dorsal BNST (dBNST) GluN2D expression significantly decreases ethanol intake in female, but not male, mice. While BNST Grin2b expression was significantly increased in protracted abstinence following CDFA, no differences in Grin2d expression were observed in the dBNST or dBNST Crh+ neurons. Finally, we find that deletion of GluN2D fails to alter negative affect in ethanol‐naïve female mice. Conclusions: These data suggest a role for BNST GluN2D‐containing NMDARs in ethanol drinking but not ethanol abstinence, highlighting sex differences and behavioral specificity. Changes in hydration status occur throughout the day affecting physiological and behavioural functions. However, little is known about the hydration status of free-living Japanese children and the seasonality of this response. We evaluated hydration status estimated by urine osmolality (Uosm) in 349 children (189 boys and 160 girls, 9.5 ± 2.6 years, range: 6–15 years) upon waking at home and during a single school day in spring (April) and summer (July). Further, we assessed the efficacy of employing self-assessment of urine colour (UC; based on an 8-point scale) by children to monitor their hydration status. Early morning Uosm was greater in the spring (903 ± 220 mOsm L−1; n = 326) as compared to summer (800 ± 244 mOsm L−1; n = 125) (P = 0.003, paired t test, n = 104). No differences, however, were observed in Uosm during the school day (P = 0.417, paired t test, n = 32). While 66% and 50% of children were considered underhydrated (Uosm ≥ 800 mOsm L−1) upon waking in the spring and summer periods, respectively, more children were underhydrated (∼12%) during the school day. Self-reported UC was similar between seasons as assessed in the morning and school day (P ≥ 0.101, paired t test), which differed from the pattern of responses observed with Uosm. We showed that a significant number of Japanese children are likely underhydrated especially in the spring period. Objective: The study aimed to determine the effects of caffeine consumption and sleep on post-spinal headache after spinal anesthesia. Background: Post-spinal headache is among the most well-known and common complications of spinal anesthesia. Although caffeine consumption is recommended to prevent headache after spinal anesthesia, caffeine does not prevent headache and causes sleep-related problems. No study in the literature found a correlation between sleep and caffeine consumption after spinal anesthesia and post-spinal headache. Methods: The research is a descriptive and cross-sectional study. The study sample comprised 425 patients who underwent elective surgery in a research hospital. The research data were collected by face-to-face interviews between April 2021 and December 2023. The "Sociodemographic and Clinical Characteristics Form," "Richard-Campbell Sleep Scale," "Insomnia Severity Index," and "Visual Analog Scale" were used in data collection. Factors affecting post-spinal headache were determined using binary logistic regression analysis. Results: According to the binary logistic regression, the insomnia severity score (OR = 1.234; p <.001), sleep quality score (OR =.992; p <.01), postoperative sleep duration (OR =.619; p <.05), and not consuming coffee (OR =.035; p <.001) are statistically significant predictors of post-spinal headache and explain 57.7% of the variance. A one-unit increase in patients' insomnia severity increased the probability of experiencing a post-spinal headache by 23.4%. With a one-unit increase in sleep quality, there was an 8% decrease in the probability of experiencing spinal headache, and a 3.81% decrease in the probability of experiencing post-spinal headache with an increase in sleep duration after surgery. The probability of experiencing post-spinal headache was 0.35 times higher in individuals who did not consume caffeine after surgery than in those who consumed it. Conclusion: The present study demonstrated that insomnia severity and sleep quality were more effective than caffeine consumption in preventing post-spinal headache. Insomnia and decreased sleep quality may cause a significant burden in developing post-spinal headache in patients and may cause post-spinal headache to be observed more frequently. Therefore, the use of caffeine in preventing or reducing post-spinal headache may adversely affect the duration and quality of sleep and increase the severity of insomnia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: For 70% of patients, liver cirrhosis will be alcohol-related. Liver cirrhosis influences a long list of physical challenges and reduced appetite. The purpose of the study was to optimize nutritional therapy with the use of a nutrition project manager. Method: Patients diagnosed with liver cirrhosis and hospitalized longer than 48 hours were included. Outcomes were nutritional screening, fluid intake, diet registration, and weight. Patients were given a diet plan at discharge. Results: Nineteen patients were included in the project. Fluid intake and diet registration were measured in 72% of the cases. On average, the patients achieved their daily energy needs in 28% of their hospitalization. None of the patients had an unexplained weight loss. Conclusion: Even with a professional focussing only on nutrition, it is difficult to obtain full nutrition for the patients. Ageing is an inherent and intricate biological process that takes place in living organisms as time progresses. It involves the decline of multiple physiological functions, leading to body structure and overall performance modifications. The ageing process differs among individuals and is influenced by various factors, including lifestyle, environment and genetic makeup. Metabolic changes and reduced locomotor activity are common hallmarks of ageing. Our study focuses on exploring these phenomena in prematurely ageing PolgA(D257A/D257A) mice (also known as PolgA) aged 41–42 weeks, as they closely mimic human ageing. We assess parameters such as oxygen consumption (VO2), carbon dioxide production (VCO2), respiratory exchange ratio (RER) and locomotor activity using a metabolic cage for 4 days and comparing them with age‐matched wild‐type littermates (WT). Our findings revealed that VO2, VCO2, RER, locomotor activities, water intake and feeding behaviour show a daily rhythm, aligning with roughly a 24‐h cycle. We observed that the RER was significantly increased in PolgA mice compared to WT mice during the night‐time of the light–dark cycle, suggesting a shift towards a higher reliance on carbohydrate metabolism due to more food intake during the active phase. Additionally, female PolgA mice displayed a distinct phenotype with reduced walking speed, walking distance, body weight and grip strength in comparison to male PolgA and WT mice, indicating an early sign of ageing. Taken together, our research highlights the impact of sex‐specific patterns on ageing traits in PolgA mice aged 41–42 weeks, which may be attributable to human ageing phenotypes. The unique genetic composition and accelerated ageing characteristics of PolgA mice make them invaluable in ageing studies, facilitating the investigation of underlying biological mechanisms and the identification of potential therapeutic targets for age‐related diseases. Pressure ulcer is considered a common and costly problem in the care of patients. Prevention and management of pressure ulcer are very important due to the high cost of treatment and the adverse consequences of pressure ulcer. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of implementing “aSSKINg” model in reducing pressure ulcer risk. This study used a before- and afterintervention quasi-experimental design. This study was performed on 60 patients who were not randomly selected and assigned in to control and study group. The data collection tool was a 3-part sheet (Braden scale, skin health assessment, and Pressure ulcer assessment). The incidence of pressure ulcer was 19 (60.0%) in the control group versus 9 (30.0%) in the study group with statistical significant differences. The most common site of pressure ulcer was coccyx (6 [31.6%]) in the control group and Heel (3 [33.3%]) in the study group. Background: The pollution of organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) is of global concern, but the site-specific data of OPFR concentrations in drinking water are scarce for many areas of the world outside of Europe and the US. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence and profiles of OPFRs in the tap water treatment and delivery process in Shanghai. Methods: In total, 106 samples were analyzed for 10 OPFRs, which were collected periodically from monitoring points of drinking water treatment plants and piped water between November 2021 and July 2023. The average daily doses of OPFRs through the ingestion of tap water were calculated by multiplying nominal volumes of water ingestion rates with the measured concentrations of OPFRs. Hazard quotients, the hazard index, and the carcinogenic risks of OPFRs via drinking water were used to estimate the health risks. Results: Tributyl phosphate (TBP), tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), and tris (1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCIPP) were found in >90% of the tap water samples, whereas triethyl phosphate (TEP) and tris (2,3-dibromopropyl) phosphate (TDBPP) were not found in any samples. The concentrations of Σ10OPFRs were found at part-per-trillion ranges, with average concentrations that ranged from 86.0 ng/L in February 2023 (dry season) to 218 ng/L in July 2022 (wet season). TCIPP was the most abundant compound among the investigated OPFRs. The average daily dose of Σ10OPFRs via the ingestion of tap water was up to 20.4 ng/kg body weight/day. The hazard quotients of OPFRs through drinking water were in the range of 10−5–10−4, indicating low risk levels. Moreover, the hazard index of OPFRs indicated that the risk for children (2 × 10−4) was higher than adults (7 × 10−5). Conclusion: Tap water intake may be an important source of OPFRs exposure. Background: The issue of human mental health is gaining more and more attention nowadays. However, most mental disorders are treated with antipsychotic drugs that cause weight gain and metabolic disorders, which include olanzapine (OLZ). The search for and development of natural compounds for the prevention of obesity when taking antipsychotic drugs is an urgent task. The biopolymer chitosan (Chi) and its derivatives have lipid-lowering and anti-diabetic properties, which makes them potential therapeutic substances for use in the treatment of metabolic disorders. The purpose of this work was to analyze the effect of the natural biopolymer Chi, its derivative N-succinyl chitosan (SuChi), and Orlistat (ORL) as a control on the effects caused by the intake of OLZ in a mouse model. Methods: Mice were fed with pearl barley porridge mixed with OLZ or combinations OLZ + Chi, OLZ + SuChi, or OLZ + ORL for 2 months. The weight, lipid profile, blood chemokines, expression of genes associated with appetite regulation, and behavior of the mice were analyzed in dynamics. Results: For the first time, data were obtained on the effects of Chi and SuChi on metabolic changes during the co-administration of antipsychotics. Oral OLZ increased body weight, food and water intake, and glucose, triglyceride, and cholesterol levels in blood. ORL and SuChi better normalized lipid metabolism than Chi, decreasing triglyceride and cholesterol levels. OLZ decreased the production of all chemokines tested at the 4th week of treatment and increased CXCL1, CXCL13, and CCL22 chemokine levels at the 7th week. All of the supplements corrected the level of CXCL1, CXCL13, and CCL22 chemokines but did not recover suppressed chemokines. SuChi and ORL stimulated the expression of satiety associated proopiomelanocortin (POMC) and suppressed the appetite-stimulating Agouti-related protein (AgRP) genes. All supplements improved the locomotion of mice. Conclusions: Taken collectively, we found that SuChi more than Chi possessed an activity close to that of ORL, preventing metabolic disorders in mice fed with OLZ. As OLZ carries positive charge and SuChi is negatively charged, we hypothesized that SuChi's protective effect can be explained by electrostatic interaction between OLZ byproducts and SuChi in the gastrointestinal tract. Background/Objectives: Following recommended treatment plans is essential to the success of the treatment. In hemodialysis, adherence to the treatment regimen remains a challenge in many healthcare settings. Many factors, including the patient's level of social support, influence treatment adherence, but few studies have addressed these relationships. Methods: A correlational cross-sectional design was used to assess the relationship between perceived social support and adherence to treatment regimens among patients undergoing hemodialysis. Self-reported surveys were used to collect data. Results: One hundred and twenty-one hemodialysis patients were recruited from two dialysis centers. Overall, 45.5% of participants demonstrated good adherence, 47.9% had moderate adherence, and 6.6% had poor adherence. Specifically, 76% of participants consistently took their prescribed medications, 75% regularly attended hemodialysis sessions, 67.8% adhered to dietary restrictions, and 62% followed fluid-intake guidelines. Perceived social support was reported as highest from family members (89.3%), followed by significant others (62.8%) and friends (49.6%). There were significant correlations between perceived social support and overall adherence to treatments among hemodialysis patients. Conclusions: This study provides evidence for positive relationships between perceived social support and adherence to treatment regimens among hemodialysis patients. It is recommended that professional caregivers intervene with clients and their families, prepare recreational and educational programs for patients undergoing hemodialysis, and inspire other researchers to suggest different social support models and approaches. This study introduces an innovative numerical approach to simulate the construction of large concrete structures incorporating post-cooling systems employing the finite element method (FEM). The proposed methodology integrates critical construction parameters, including temperature control mechanisms, while accounting for concrete hydration and environmental conditions. Compared to traditional discrete models, this approach provides similar accuracy with substantially reduced computational costs, enhancing predictive capabilities in the thermal analysis of mass concrete. The method was applied to simulate the construction of a water intake pillar at the Tocoma hydroelectric plant in Venezuela, where the simulated results closely matched in situ temperature measurements. This study aims to investigate the effects of the Galectin‐3 (Gal‐3) inhibitor TD139 on inflammation and the extracellular signal‐regulated kinase (ERK)/c‐Jun N‐terminal kinase (JNK)/p38 pathway in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Human placental tissues were treated with TD139 and TNF‐α, assessing Gal‐3, ERK/JNK/p38 activation, and inflammatory cytokines. GDM was induced in mice via subcutaneous injections of streptozotocin (STZ). After confirming GDM, mice were treated with 15 mg/kg TD139 on GD 10.5 12.5, 14.5, 16.5, and 18.5. Serum inflammatory cytokines were measured on GD 20.5, and post‐delivery placental tissues were analyzed. Data were analyzed using one‐way or two‐way repeated measures ANOVA with post hoc tests. TD139 suppressed TNF‐α‐induced increases in Gal‐3, IL‐1β, IL‐6, MCP‐1, and ERK/JNK/p38 activation in placental tissues. In STZ‐induced GDM mice, TD139 reduced glucose levels, weight loss, and food and water intake. TD139 significantly lowered TNF‐α, IL‐1β, IL‐6, and MCP‐1 in serum and placental tissues and inhibited the ERK/JNK/p38 pathway. TD139 improved pup numbers in GDM mice compared to untreated ones. TD139 reduces inflammation and inhibits the ERK/JNK/p38 pathway in TNF‐α stimulated placental tissues and STZ‐induced GDM mice, suggesting its therapeutic potential for managing GDM‐related placental inflammation and improving pregnancy outcomes. The study used TNF‐α to mimic GDM in placental tissues and an STZ‐induced GDM mouse model, which may not fully represent human GDM complexity. Introduction: Preoperative carbohydrate intake is essential to enhance postoperative recovery. However, its safety for individuals with obesity remains unclear. This study investigated the safety of preoperative carbohydrate consumption compared to water intake in obese populations through gastric volume assessment. Methods: A prospective randomized crossover study enrolled 30 healthy volunteers aged 18–65 years with a body mass index ≥ 30 kg/m2, following a minimum 6-h fast. The participants received either 400 ml of a carbohydrate drink (group C) or water (group W). Gastric ultrasonography, blood glucose level, hunger, and thirst assessments were conducted at baseline (T) and various time points (T2 to T6). The protocol was repeated with reverse interventions at least 1 week later. Results: Group C had significantly higher gastric volume at T3, T4, and T5 compared to group W, with a prolonged time to empty the gastric antrum (94.4 ± 28.5 vs. 61.0 ± 33.5 min, 95% CI 33.41 [17.06,24.69]). However, glucose levels, degrees of hunger, and thirst showed no significant differences between the groups. Conclusion: Administering 400 ml of preoperative carbohydrates to healthy obese individuals 2 h preoperatively is safe and comparable to water intake. These findings support the integration of carbohydrate loading into perioperative care for obese individuals, consistent with the enhanced recovery after surgery protocols. During high-intensity (HI) exercise, metabolic acidosis significantly impairs exercise performance. Increasing the body's buffering capacity through training and exogenous intake of alkalizing supplements may improve highintensity performance. Manipulating water and diet intake may influence the acid-base balance. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of mineral water rich in bicarbonate ions (STY) or placebo water (PLA) on circulating biomarkers and anaerobic performance and to verify whether alkalizing (ALK) or acidizing (ACI) diet would modulate these effects. Twenty-four athletes, assigned either to ALK (n = 12) or ACI (n = 12) diet for four weeks, completed a 1-min rowing Wingate Test in a double-blind and randomized trial after one week of daily hydration (1.5 to 2L/d) with either STY or PLA. Blood samples were taken before and after each test, and urine samples were collected each week. Chronic consumption of bicarbonate-rich water significantly impacted resting urinary pH irrespective of alkalizing or acidizing dietary intake. STY induced a significant increase in blood pH, lactate, and HCO3- ion concentration postexercise compared to PLA. Similar changes were observed when STY was associated with the ALK diet. In contrast, STY combined with the ACI diet only significantly affected urine pH and peak blood lactate compared to PLA (p < 0.05). No effect of bicarbonate-rich water was reported on anaerobic performance (p > 0.05). Our results suggest that consumption of bicarbonate-rich water alters acid-base balance during a warm-up and after HI exercise, could potentiate beneficial effects of an alkalizing diet on the acid-base balance after HI exercise, and reduces the acid load induced by an acidifying diet. This review explores the principles, applications, and efficacy of these non-invasive techniques, highlighting their potential to transform hydration monitoring in clinical and everyday settings. By facilitating improved patient compliance and enabling proactive hydration management, these approaches align with contemporary trends in personalized healthcare. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract. Sea conch peptide hydrolysate (CPH) was produced by enzymatic digestion of fresh conch meat with trypsin enzyme. To analyze the molecular composition, functional groups, and structural morphology of the hydrolysate, we employed liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS), Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results confirmed that crude protein could be effectively digested by enzymes to generate peptides. In this study, we evaluated the bioactivities of CPH on dextran sulfate solution (DSS)‐induced colitis in mice. The findings demonstrated that CPH supplementation improved body weight, food and water intake, and colon length. The therapeutic efficacy and immunoregulatory effect of CPH were further determined. Our results exhibited that CPH treatment significantly ameliorated pathological symptoms by enhancing intestinal integrity, mucin production, and goblet cell count. Moreover, the immunoregulatory effect of CPH on mRNA expression levels of different pro‐ and anti‐inflammatory cytokines was determined. Results exhibited a decrease in the expression of pro‐inflammatory cytokines and an increase in anti‐inflammatory cytokines in the colon. Additionally, the CPH administration modulates the nuclear factor kappa B (NF‐κB) pathway, preventing DNA damage and cell death. Assays for apoptosis and DNA damage revealed that CPH reduced oxidative DNA damage and apoptosis. Introduction: Lectins are carbohydrate-binding proteins that are extremely selective for sugar groups in the other molecules. As a result, they perform a variety of roles in biological processes involving cell, carbohydrate, and protein recognition at the cellular and molecular levels. Because lectins can bind to carbohydrates, they may play a role in determining the rate of carbohydrate digestion. They also bind to some proteins involved in diabetes mellitus (DM) pathophysiology. The present review aims to summarize the efficiency of lectins from different sources as potential antihyperglycemic agents. Methods: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were employed for the drafting. In this regard, published scientific articles on the effects of different lectins on blood glucose (BG), glucose tolerance, hormonal effects, carbohydrate-digesting enzymes, oxidative stress, and insulin production process were collected from reputed journals using electronic databases. Furthermore, the toxicity effects of lectins from different sources were collected. A specific keyword search was completed to collect numerous articles with unique experimental designs and significant results. This was followed by the selection of the requisite articles based on the criteria designed by the authors. Data extraction was based on the common research elements included in the articles. Results and Discussion: Of 13 identified studies, 11 studies were considered after double screening based on the inclusion criteria. All 11 pharmacological investigations were considered for review. Subsequent studies reflected on the pharmacological properties of lectins on the levels of BG, oxidative stress, ß-cell proliferation, insulin resistance, inhibition of carbohydrate digesting enzymes, body weight, food and water intake, lipid profile, and other parameters. This review highlights lectins as potential anti-diabetic agents. Conclusion: However, due to limited research, systematic evaluation is recommended for their development and promotion as effective potential antihyperglycemic agents. Heavy metal pollution is a critical issue affecting the safety of drinking water sources. However, the impact of human activities on heavy metal risk levels in water-carrying lakes remains unclear. This study aims to explore the risk mechanisms of heavy metals in Luoma Lake, an important water-carrying lake for the South-to-North Water Diversion Project. We explored the spatial and temporal differences in the distribution of heavy metals in Lake Luoma using methods such as the heavy metal pollution index (HPI) and assessed the risk variations using a health assessment model. The results indicated that heavy metal concentrations in water-carrying lakes generally decreased during the dry season, with Mn and Zn levels decreasing by 89.3% and 56.2%, respectively. The comprehensive score of HPI decreased by 13.16% following the retreating polder compared to the control area (Non-retreating polder area). Furthermore, the HPI at the drinking water intake was lower, which is closely associated with the elevated dissolved oxygen (DO) and oxidation–reduction potential (ORP) resulting from water diversion. The annual average health risk across the entire lake was not significant, with higher levels observed in the control area. The annual non-carcinogenic risk levels of Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb range from 10−13 to 10−9, which are considered negligible risk levels. Notably, the carcinogenic risk posed by arsenic (As) through the drinking pathway reached 10−5 a−1, exceeding the maximum levels recommended by certain organizations. The global microplastic pollution issue, as a result of the indispensable usage of microplastics in building materials, packaged food, medical products and consumer goods, poses significant health problems for the population. These small particles can penetrate intact cell barriers in the intestines and alveoli, thereby entering the bloodstream. The aim of this pilot study was to investigate the effects of reduced plastic consumption on blood pressure. Eight adult and healthy participants abstained from consuming commercially produced bottled beverages and restricted their primary fluid intake to tap water. Blood pressure was measured on both sides before, after 14 days and after 28 to 30 days of this partial plastic diet. Women exhibit a significant change in systolic blood pressure on the right arm after 2 and 4 weeks, while the left arm demonstrates no significant changes in blood pressure. On the contrary, in men, systolic blood pressure values on both arms show no significant alterations, attributable to the high variability across the three participants. Moreover, no significant differences in systolic blood pressure were observed when analysing the entire cohort. Significant findings are evident only at the two-week mark for diastolic blood pressure for all participants in both arms. When considering diastolic blood pressure separately for women and men, men again show no significant changes in blood pressure on either arm. However, women exhibit a significant decrease in diastolic blood pressure on the left arm after 2 weeks and a statistically significant decline in diastolic blood pressure on the right arm after both 2 and 4 weeks. The results of the study suggest, for the first time, that a reduction in plastic use could potentially lower blood pressure, probably due to the reduced volume of plastic particles in the bloodstream. The prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) receptor EP3 has been detected in the thick ascending limb (TAL) and the collecting duct of the kidney, where its actions are proposed to inhibit water reabsorption. However, EP3 is also expressed in other cell types, including vascular endothelial cells. The aim here was to determine the contribution of EP3 in renal water handling in male and female adult mice by phenotyping a novel mouse model with doxycycline-dependent deletion of EP3 throughout the kidney tubule (EP3−/− mice). RNAscope demonstrated that EP3 was highly expressed in the cortical and medullary TAL of adult mice. Compared with controls EP3 mRNA expression was reduced by >80% in whole kidney (RT-qPCR) and nondetectable (RNAscope) in renal tubules of EP3−/− mice. Under basal conditions, there were no significant differences in control and EP3−/− mice of both sexes in food and water intake, body weight, urinary output, or clinical biochemistries. No differences were detectable between genotypes in handling of an acute water load or in their response to the vasopressin analog 1-deamino-8- d -arginine-vasopressin (dDAVP). No differences in water handling were observed when PGE2 production was enhanced using 1% NaCl load. Expression of proteins involved in kidney water handling was not different between genotypes. This study demonstrates that renal tubular EP3 is not essential for body fluid homeostasis in males or females, even when PGE2 levels are high. The mouse model is a novel tool for examining the role of EP3 in kidney function independently of potential developmental abnormalities or systemic effects. NEW & NOTEWORTHY: The prostanoid EP3 receptor is proposed to play a key role in the kidney tubule and antagonize the effects of vasopressin on aquaporin-mediated water reabsorption. Here, we phenotyped a kidney tubule-specific inducible knockout mouse model of the EP3 receptor. Our major finding is that, even under physiological stress, tubular EP3 plays no detectable role in renal water or solute handling. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of blackberry juice consumption during pregnancy on the length of the brain, as well as on the cell density of the dentate gyrus in Wistar rat pups. Pregnant rats were divided into three groups: control (C), fed with standard diet and water ad libitum; BJ1, which received blackberry juice containing polyphenols (7.8 mg/kg) and anthocyanins (1.9 mg/kg); and BJ2, receiving blackberry juice containing polyphenols (9.3 mg/kg) and anthocyanins (3.54 mg/kg). On postnatal day 0, pups per litter, body weight, and length were measured, and cells in the dentate gyrus of male pups were quantified. Maternal body weight and pups per litter were statistically equal across experimental groups during pregnancy. Pups in BJ1 and BJ2 groups showed an increase in body weight (20%) and length (5%) when comparing to controls. An increase in brain length was observed in BJ2 group (8%) as compared to the control. A significant increase in the number of cells/mm2 was observed in the dentate gyrus of the offspring in BJ1 (21.8%) and BJ2 (23.7%) groups when compared to the control group. Objective: To determine how a child’s dietary intake affected their growth and cognitive skills when physically challenged in Faisalabad City, Pakistan. Study Design: Cross Sectional Study. Setting: Tanzeem ul Lisan, the Government Special Education Center, Al Faisal Markaz e Nabina, and Government National Special Education Center. Period: January 2023 to December 2023. Method: One hundred special children were selected randomly, face-to-face interviews were conducted, and collected data were analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Results: Indicated that male participants aged 10 to 15 years were prominent, whereas 20% each had ADHD, autism, blindness, and deafness. Many participants maintain an active or very active lifestyle despite a significant portion not engaging in regular exercise. Preference for home-cooked meals, moderate consumption of dietary supplements, variation in water intake, and frequency of eating out were found. Respondents’ Common issues include difficulty making decisions, remembering personal information, and learning new content. Based on the results, cognitive training programs are recommended to increase awareness among children and their families. Conclusion: In the nutshell, results concluded that dietary intake of special children were associated with physical growth and cognitive skills. Majority of the children were not following normal dietary pattern and the chances of micronutrient deficiencies was higher. Results showed that socioeconomic conditions, type of disorder/ disability, low education of parents, awareness about good nutrition were significantly associated with healthy eating habits and physical growth of special children. The stability and performance of loess infrastructure in cold regions are often challenged by seasonal freezing–thawing action. The action of the foundation loess is a complex thermo-hydro-mechanical coupling process, and it is crucial to understand this process for the loess infrastructure in cold regions. A series of controlled tests were conducted to observe the changes in temperature, moisture, and frost heave variations within loess samples under freezing–thawing, and the influences of cycle period, freezing–thawing amplitude, and cycle number on the thermo-hydro-mechanical behavior of loess were investigated. The results reveal that freeze–thaw cycles significantly affect the heat transfer, water migration, and deformation of the loess. The temperatures of sample at different heights periodically vary under freezing–thawing. Water is absorbed to the samples, which undergoes a rapid water intake stage, a water drained stage, and a slow water intake stage under freezing–thawing, resulting in moisture redistribution in loess. Loess undergoes frost heave, thaw settlement, and consolidation processes during freezing–thawing, and a slight wetting collapse may occur after several freezing–thawing cycles. Within the same cycle, frost heave is the largest while consolidation deformation is the smallest. Frost heave and consolidation deformation reach their maximum values at the second cycle, whereas thaw settlement reaches its maximum value during the second or third cycle. Each stage deformation increases with an extended cycle period and almost decreases as the freezing–thawing amplitude increases. Freeze–thaw cycles can induce wetting collapse of loess, resulting in negative residual deformation. Furthermore, the thermo-hydro-mechanical coupling process and the deformation mechanism of loess have been elucidated. Aim: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) rank among the most prevalent infections in humans, carrying substantial implications for public health. Women experiencing recurrent UTIs are often advised to boost their fluid intake to help eliminate bacteria. In this study, we explored the impact of elevated fluid consumption during UTIs using a mouse model of pyelonephritis. Methods: UTI was induced in 8–10 w female BALB/cJ‐mice by surgically injecting Escherichia coli (O6:K13:H1) into the bladder whereafter mice were randomized to gel food (GF) or regular chow. Immune response and infection severity were determined 24‐h post‐infection. In vitro bacterial growth (OD600) was determined in urine from mice or from human volunteers. Results: Gel feeding increased urine output (1.40 ± 0.77 μL min−1, p < 0.01) and diluted the urine (668.7 ± 177 mOsmol kg−1, p < 0.0001) compared to controls on regular chow (urine output: 0.34 ± 0.27 μL min−1, osmolality: 1439 ± 473.5 mOsmol kg−1). Mice on GF had a higher risk of pyelonephritis (87.5%) and more severe infections (26.22 ± 9.88 CFU mg−1 tissue) compared to controls (43.75%; 3.87 ± 3.56 CFU mg−1, p < 0.01). Correspondingly, the growth of E. coli was markedly reduced at osmolalities above 1200 mOsmol kg−1 compared to 600 mOsmol kg−1 and GF mice had lower urine levels of uromodulin (13.70 ± 1.89 μg mL−1, p < 0.01) compared to controls (24.65 ± 2.70 μg mL−1). Conclusion: Increased water intake and urine flow in mice will markedly increase the risk of pyelonephritis. The increased risk may reflect reduced urine uromodulin combined with optimized growth conditions for E. coli. Summary: Objectives: We aimed to validate dietary assessment methods against the gold standard, doubly labeled water (DLW), for estimating total energy intake (TEI). Methods: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases were searched until May 2023. Inclusion criteria encompassed studies involving participants aged 1–18 years, employing dietary assessment methods like food records, dietary histories, food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), or 24‐h recalls estimating TEI alongside DLW to measure total energy expenditure (TEE). Data were pooled using random‐effects meta‐analysis models. Results: Thirty‐three studies were identified, with sample sizes ranging from 9 to 118 participants. Meta‐analysis of 22 studies identified underestimation of TEI (mean difference [MD] = −262.9 kcal/day [95% CI: −380.0, −145.8]; I2 = 93.55%) for food records compared with TEE estimated by DLW. Other dietary assessment methods, including food recalls (n = 9) (MD = 54.2 kcal/day [95% CI: −19.8, 128.1]; I2 = 49.62%), FFQ (n = 7) (MD = 44.5 kcal/day [95% CI: −317.8, 406.8]; I2 = 94.94%), and diet history (n = 3) (MD = −130.8 kcal/day [95% CI: −455.8, 194.1]; I2 = 77.48%), showed no significant differences in TEI compared with DLW‐estimated TEE. All studies were of high quality. Conclusion: Food records may underestimate TEI, yet additional research is needed to identify the most accurate methods for assessing children's dietary intake. Summary: Background: The prevalence of childhood obesity in the U.S. has increased, likely due to decreased physical activity, increased sedentary behaviour and unhealthy diets. Little is known about the relationships between these factors and weight gain in those under the age of three. Objectives: This study aimed to understand the longitudinal associations of weight gain over 6‐month intervals with child and parent characteristics as children develop from 6 to 36 months. Methods: Mother and infant data were collected at 6‐month intervals from 6 to 36 months. Weight (kg) was the primary outcome variable, and potential explanatory variables included child and parent characteristics, physical activity, motor development, diet and sleep. Structural equation modelling was used to assess associations between explanatory variables and 6‐month weight gain. Results: Weight increased ~1 kg per 6‐month interval (p < 0.001) from 6 to 36 months. Childcare outside of the home at 12 months was associated with 0.272 kg (p = 0.002) greater weight gain at 18 months, while children's physical activity was associated with 0.228 kg (per 2 SD, p = 0.051) less weight gain during the same time period. Mother's TV and screen media use (0.102 kg per hour/day, p = 0.046) and child's intake of high‐energy beverages at 18 months (0.387 kg, p = 0.037) were both associated with greater weight gain at 24 months. Conclusion: Childcare, physical activity, screen media use and high‐energy beverage consumption might affect weight gain at different time points in early childhood. Objectives: Noncarious cervical lesions (NCCLs) are multifactorial and can be caused by the anatomical structure of the teeth, erosion, abrasion and abnormal occlusion. The aim of this case–control study was to explore the risk factors for NCCLs. Methods: Cone‐beam computed tomography was used to determine whether a wedge‐shaped defect existed at the cementoenamel junction. We compared 63 participants with NCCLs with 63 controls without NCCLs, matched for sex, age (±1 year) and toothbrushing‐related factors (e.g., type of bristle and brushing patterns, frequency and strength). All participants were asked to complete a questionnaire about self‐administered daily diet habits and health condition. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine the risk factors for NCCLs. Results: Significant variables in the univariate analysis (i.e., p <.2) included frequency of carbonated beverage consumption, sella‐nasion‐point B angle (SNB) and Frankfort‐mandibular plane angle (FMA). Multivariate logistic regression demonstrated that the consumption frequency of carbonated beverages (odds ratio [OR] = 3.147; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.039–9.532), FMA (OR = 1.100; 95% CI, 1.004–1.204) and SNB (OR = 0.896; 95% CI, 0.813–0.988) was independent influencing factors. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) value of regression Model 1 (established with the frequency of carbonated beverage consumption, FMA, SNB and sleep bruxism) was 0.700 (95% CI, 0.607–0.792; p <.001), and that of regression Model 2 (established using the frequency of carbonated beverage consumption, FMA and SNB) was 0.704 (95% CI, 0.612–0.796; p <.001). Conclusions: The consumption frequency of carbonated beverages and FMA was risk factors for NCCLs; the higher the frequency of carbonated beverage consumption and FMA, the higher was the probability of NCCLs. SNB was a protective factor for NCCL occurrence; the larger the SNB, the lower was the probability of NCCL occurrence. These findings have further clarified the aetiology of NCCLs and provided clinicians with valuable insights into strategies for preventing the loss of dental tissue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Haemodialysis (HD) patients are reported to be at greater risk of malnourishment, and at risk of increased morbidity and mortality. However, most studies report from economically advanced countries. We therefore assessed the nutritional status and diet among HD patients attending a public university hospital in a sub-Saharan African country. Subjects: We performed nutritional assessments in HD patients attending the largest dialysis centre, in the country, collecting demographic and clinical data, dietary intake, along with anthropometric and bioimpedance body composition measurements in May 2022. Malnutrition was classified according to subjective global assessment score (SGA). Additional assessments of protein energy wasting (PEW), clinical frailty, and sarcopenia were made. Results: All 97 HD patients were recruited, mean age 44.7 ± 12.2 years, with 55 (56.7%) males. Malnutrition was present in 43.8%, PEW 20.6%, frailty 17.6% and sarcopenia 4.1%. On multivariable logistic regression higher serum albumin (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 0.89, 95% confidence intervals (CI) 0.85-0.95, p < 0.001), creatinine (AOR 0.99, 95%CI 0.98–0.99, p < 0.001), greater mid upper arm circumference (AOR 0.89, 95%CI 0.83–0.95, p = 0.001), body cell mass (BCM) (AOR 0.79, 95%CI 0.67–0.95, p = 0.013) and employment (AOR 0.45, 95%CI 0.23–0.87, p = 0.017), were are all protective against malnourishment. Almost 75% had reduced dietary protein intake. Conclusions: Despite a younger, less co-morbid patient population, malnutrition is common in this resource poor setting. The staple diet is based on maize, a low protein foodstuff. Employment improved finances and potentially allows better nutrition. Further studies are required to determine whether additional dietary protein can reduce the prevalence of malnutrition in this population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) with single photon emission computed tomography is an established non-invasive technique for assessing myocardial ischemia. This method involves the intravenous administration of a radiopharmaceutical that accumulates in the heart muscle proportional to regional blood flow. However, image quality and diagnostic accuracy can be compromised by various technical and patient-related factors, including high non-specific radiopharmaceutical uptake in abdominal organs such as the stomach, intestines, liver, and gall-bladder, leading to subdiaphragmatic artifacts. These artifacts are particularly problematic for evaluating inferior wall perfusion and often necessitate repeated imaging, which decreases gamma camera availability and prolongs imaging times. Despite numerous investigated techniques to reduce interfering gastrointestinal activity, results have been inconsistent, and current MPI guidelines provide scant information on effective procedures to mitigate this issue. Based on our experience, some possible approaches to reducing artifacts include choosing stress testing with an exercise stress test, when possible, late imaging, fluid intake, and consuming carbonated water immediately before imaging. Purpose: The primary objective was to assess the performance benefits of caffeine (CAF) supplementation in habitual users. Importantly, this investigation was designed to account for the potential confounding effects of CAF withdrawal (CAFW), which are inherent and common in previous work. Methods: Ten CAF-consuming (394 [146] mg·d−1) recreational cyclists (age 39.1 [14.9] y; maximum oxygen consumption 54.2 [6.2] mL·kg–1·min–1) completed four 10-km time trials (TTs) on a cycle ergometer. On each trial day, 8 hours before reporting to the laboratory, subjects consumed 1.5 mg·kg–1 CAF to prevent withdrawal (no withdrawal [N]) or a placebo (PLA; withdrawal [W]). Then, 1 hour prior to exercise, they received either 6 mg·kg–1 CAF or PLA. These protocols were repeated 4 times, employing all combinations of N/W and CAF/PLA. Results: CAFW did not impair TT power output (PLAW vs PLANP =.13). However, preexercise CAF only improved TT performance when compared to PLA in the W condition (CAFN vs PLAWP =.008, CAFW vs PLAWP =.04), not when W was mitigated (PLAN vs CAFNP =.33). Conclusions: These data indicate that preexercise CAF only improves recreational cycling performance when compared to bouts preceded by CAF abstinence, suggesting that habitual users may not benefit from 6 mg·kg–1 of CAF and that previous work may have overstated the value of CAF supplementation for habitual users.
