Little is known about the history of female investing in Australia. We develop a new dataset of company shareholders between 1857 and 1937, covering all major sectors of the economy. We calculate the female fraction of shareowners, their occupational and geographic backgrounds, and we analyse their investment patterns and behaviours including their risk profiles and portfolio construction decisions. Our findings suggest that 'gender equity'—and more—had been reached, for some companies, by the interwar period. Women investors came from many walks of life, had various motives, and appear to have largely acted independently of other women and of men. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Over the course of the eighteenth century, French East India Company ships carried numerous sailors, soldiers, passengers and unfree labourers to and from various ports of trade in the Indian Ocean. Although European merchant companies developed extensive documenting systems, certain elements received little attention in the records. When it came to tracking unfree labourers, Company employees used terminology with ambiguous meanings and categories that were codified in the Atlantic context and therefore not initially applicable in the Indian Ocean. In order for historians to interpret these records more accurately, this article reviews specific terminology and pertinent French legislation about racialized labourers. This contextual information helps to uncover previously overlooked groups of unfree labourers working for – and, at times, trying to escape from – the French East India Company in the Indian Ocean and beyond. CORPORATE history ,BUSINESS literature ,WORLD War II ,HISTORY of publishing ,EMPIRICAL research - Abstract
This paper utilises a systematic review of 110 Polish corporate histories to explore the question of how the genre of corporate history has evolved over time in a country that has undergone multiple transitions. The corporate histories subjected to review were published in three different historical periods: prior to World War II, during the socialist period and following the transition to capitalism. The analysis is focussed on both formal and thematic features of Polish corporate history as a genre. This paper contributes to the business history literature in three ways. First, it showcases some unique features of relatively unknown corporate histories in the Polish context. Second, it provides an empirical illustration of the process of genre evolution by analysing continuity and change in corporate histories published over three different historical periods. Third, it offers methodological insight into the analysis of the corporate history genre in countries where it is not recognised. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We conducted an inductive study of discourse associated with the U.S. luxury hotel category, from its beginnings in 1790 through 2015, to explain how cultural processes contribute to elite category endurance. Analyzing data from historical archives, interviews, and observations, we use both qualitative and quantitative methods to reveal how the endurance of an elite category is an ongoing cultural accomplishment that occurs via periodic redefinition of its "symbolic boundary"—that is, the set of meanings and practices that distinguish the elite from nonelite. Modeling the boundary in terms of semiotic codes of opposition, we find that the encoding of the symbolic boundary serves as a temporary settlement that conveys both the category's elite exclusivity and its cultural consonance with broader societal beliefs, tastes, and practices. Over time, however, with industry and societal changes, tensions erupt in the balance between the needs for exclusivity and consonance, propelling a redefinition of what it means to be elite. Our research extends current theorizations of elite category endurance by revealing how the elite symbolic boundary is neither permanent nor unassailable; rather, we show how it changes to enable long-term elite category endurance. This article studies the trajectory of the editor Jorge Herralde and the project and editorial policies of the Anagrama publishing house, which he founded in 1969. The narrative is structured by two central moments in its history: the crisis of the company during the period of the Spanish transition, and the fight for the defense of independent publishing in the 1990s and 2000s. The article also analyses the editorial policies of the Barcelona-based house at these two junctures and the historical role they played in the consolidation of a certain idea of independent publishing that continues to this day. "No Birds of Passage: A History of Gujarati Muslim Business Communities, 1800–1975" by Michael O'Sullivan explores the role of three Gujarati Muslim communities, Borhas, Khojas, and Memons, in the development of modern capitalism in South Asia and the Indian Ocean. O'Sullivan argues that these communities, through their caste associations or religious community collectives known as jamaats, played a crucial role in coordinating and promoting business activities across Asia and Africa. The book also highlights the integration of economic and religious history, challenging colonial narratives and emphasizing the importance of Islamic thought and practice in the economic and social lives of these communities. The book will be valuable for scholars interested in the history of global capitalism, Muslim economic histories, and caste-based community economic and social histories. [Extracted from the article]

Most business leaders focus on the future much more than on the past, believing that their job is to embrace disruption and innovation, transform their organizations, and explore new frontiers. But decades of research on companies worldwide shows that most successful ones are also guided by core values and a clear purpose. These can often be uncovered by conducting a thorough audit of a company’s history, original value statements, and purpose. Then leaders can decide what to preserve and what to let go—celebrating and collaborating around the good while acknowledging and moving on from the bad. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article examines Viceland's rise and fall through its pot-friendly food programming. Vice's wielding of cooking and cannabis as ideal expressions of its masculine, countercultural brand is analyzed here through intersecting histories of the evolving cultural status of cannabis, food television's generic conventions, and Vice Media's own problematic corporate history. This situated reading demonstrates how TV can weave emerging politics into the fabric of popular culture precisely through its most procedurally familiar forms. Yet Viceland's history and contrived TV environment also produce a generative ambiguity that complicates the programs' political engagement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

20. The Public and Corporate Use of History: Commemorative Books at Catholic Schools.

- Abstract
The present research is framed within the study of Catholic schools and more specifically, in the commemorative books that these centres promoted and published. In order to carry out the study, a total of 34 books have been analysed. They all deal with the history of different Catholic schools in the Balearic Islands (Spain). The involvement of educational community members (students, alumni, teachers, families, ecc.) in the production of the books, together with the institutional and reputational use made of them, link these historiographical products to both the genre of public history and the field of corporate history. In order to understand the nature of these links, as well as the idiosyncrasy of these monographs, this study aims to shed light on the "who", "what" and "how", that is, on the authorship, content and format of the commemorative books in question. The results obtained show that the commemorative books, apart from offering a wealth of useful data regarding the past of Catholic schools, help to better understand the evolution of a historiographical practice that has formed the basis of "new" historiographical genres related to the public and corporate use of history. Traditionally, the History of Education has come close to the reality of private and religious schools from eminently educational and pedagogical interpretative models. Despite the fact that these institutions perform educational functions, they must not hide their status as companies, which operate in an educational market that requires, for the achievement of business survival and growth, the implementation of different commercial strategies. This research aims to approach one of these strategies. Specifically, it focuses on the analysis of commercial benefits derived from the creation and dissemination of the corporate history of these educational centres. To do so, the historical method has been applied in a case study framed geographically in the Sant Francesc de Sales school (Ciutadella de Menorca, Spain) and temporarily in the years immediately following the Spanish Civil War, known as the Post-War period (1939–1945). The triangulation of written, oral and iconographic sources has allowed a wide and rigorous analysis of an untreated phenomenon in educational historiography, exposing explanatory models that could be reproduced in other cases of a similar nature. This article investigates whether the social ties of corporate executives and directors affect short-term return growth during the announcement period of mergers and acquisitions (M&A). We consider both the educational background and employment history of the corporate executives and directors to measure social ties. Specifically, a text analysis algorithm is employed to match employment history. Then, we choose the cumulative abnormal returns to measure the short-term return growth. Using a sample of 157 M&A deals in the Chinese market from 2000 to 2017, we find that acquirer-target social ties have a significantly negative effect on post-merger performance. However, the negative effect of social ties on post-merger firms' short-term returns will decrease (become less negative) when the firms have good corporate governance mechanisms. Moreover, social ties could also affect the retention of the target firms. The executives and directors are more likely to remain in the post-acquisition firm when the social ties are high. Our results have important implications for policymakers and corporate governance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The history of Industrogradnja between 1966 and 1980, although only a short, in medias res, segment in its biography, provides a complete overview of phases that Yugoslav companies underwent on their path to becoming a large industrial system. This article explores changes in management structure and application of new managerial practices during this period, which in turn led this construction and engineering company to the status of the leader in the housing industry in Zagreb. Apart from reconstruction of the company history, this article delves into two stages of complex structural changes the League of Communist of Yugoslavia implemented in the country's socio-economic system, and investigates how a hybrid of two value systems, socialist and market, affected Yugoslav business practices. The case of Industrogradnja and this article aim to contribute to the understanding of socialist projects in the twentieth century as a variety of socio-economic frameworks as well as business environments. This paper investigates the drivers of the market's reaction to share repurchase announcements in the UK and the related abnormality in stock performance. It uniquely captures the impact of globalisation in tandem with a variety of firm-level and macro-level determinants. We undertake multivariate OLS regression to test the determinants of the market's reaction and find a negative influence when repurchases are tax-friendlier than dividends if there is high debt exposure and economic globalisation is rising, with a positive influence when the company has a history of distributing above average dividends. To quantify the short-term price abnormality, we employ event study analysis, and the findings compute positive (insignificant) stock price abnormality for nonfinancial (financial) firms. For long-term stock price abnormality, we compare against the FTSE 100 by computing annual geometric stock performances. The findings indicate a negative (insignificant) stock price abnormality for nonfinancial (financial) firms. The results can aid corporate management in improving repurchase timing, aid in the decision making of financial practitioners when trading or investing in repurchasing firms, and assist policymakers in mapping more efficient fiscal and cross-market trade frameworks. A history of corporate governance (CG) research demonstrates that it has been essentially devoted to Anglo- Saxon large corporations. Thus, the study of CG systems was conducted within a particular national institutional context of formal rules and informal rules. It, therefore, led to the promotion of mechanisms such as the board of directors as well as managers` markets and takeovers. The opposition between the disciplinary and cognitive func- tions of governance that support the presentation of the different micro theories, could also, in the continuum, identify the analysis of national systems of corporate governance (NSCG). This dichotomy would result, in the presentation of disciplinary analysis of the NSCG that presume that the essential influencing factor of efficiency – often measured according to the productive perspective by the growth of the national economy – is based on the protection of the interest of the different contributors of production factors, with precedence given, under the in- fluence of the shareholder view, to financial investors. The Walt Disney Company has maintained an aggressive approach to brand management for nearly a century. With the acquisition of a number of highly reputable companies, this aggression has become unignorable within the media industry. At the same time, Disney has embraced digital expansionism, culminating with the launch of its own on-demand streaming service, Disney+, in late 2019. The platform's documentary series offer a unique window into this new era of the Disney empire, usefully demonstrating the careful navigation of corporate legacy and history in the creation and maintenance of what I term brand futurity. Thinking critically about the concept of collective imaginaries in the context of the digital and streaming economies, this article argues that these docuseries illustrate Disney's digital corporate strategy as a narrativization of wonderful work and ever-expanding value. Decades ago, General Electric Company experienced a meteoric rise that leaders throughout the world sought to emulate. Textbooks and talking heads attributed the company's growth and success to ingenuity, innovation, and industrial prowess. Managers were revered. Practices were replicated. Strategies were heralded and imitated to the fullest extent possible. What's less well understood is how the company fell from grace. In Power Failure, esteemed financial journalist William D. Cohan explores the cracks in the foundation that were largely overlooked by the masses too focused on the company's towering successes. Blind spots, hubris, and avoidable mistakes are some of the many areas he explores in this comprehensive assessment.

Conflict of interests between shareholders and managers and other problems have led to the creation of corporate governance mechanisms. But, firms' performances and the effect of corporate governance mechanisms on firm performance are still of interest to researchers. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of internal audit formation history and audit committee formation history on the company's performance and also to investigate the moderating effect of firm age on these relationships. The population in this research includes all the companies listed on the Tehran Stock Exchange during 2018 to 2022, and the sample includes 120 companies. Research data were analyzed through multivariate regression model and by Stata software. The results show that the internal audit formation history has a positive and significant effect on the company's performance and also the audit committee formation history has a positive and significant effect on company's performance. The results also show that firm age is a positive and significant effect on company's performance. Moreover, the results show that firm age has no significant effect on the relationship between the internal audit formation history and the company's performance, but firm age has a positive effect on the relationship between the audit committee formation history and the company's performance. This paper presents a proximal study of energy transition in a large state-owned enterprise. Organizational change is the prerequisite for energy transition in a company that has historically understood its own identity in the remunerative oil gas industry. The methodology of the research is a qualitative on-field study of the implementation of the transition strategy inside the company. For this purpose, the research uses primarily first-hand reports collected within the organization in the years 2018–2020. The paper explores the dynamic process of change to reveal the tensions, conflicting identities, and strategies of implementation needed to start the energy transition, shedding light on the formation of a new corporate identity that traces back to the entrepreneurial inception of the company. The role of communication between the different levels of the company was crucial. The management found in the corporate history a moderator of organizational change that led to a renewed entrepreneurial identity. This paper brings evidence that a re-interpretation of the corporate identity is a condition that eases the process of organizational change. The results of the study will provide the theory with a practical case in order to better understand the transitions of state-owned enterprises in their effort to promote organizational change and drive sustainable innovations. Although the American corporation is now taken for granted as a private market actor, the corporation was once just as readily accepted as a quasi-public 'creature of the state.' This conceptual shift marks one of the most historically consequential instances of conceptual reclassification in American economic history. How was an understanding of the corporation as subordinate to the state replaced with an understanding of the corporation as prior to the state? In this article, I demonstrate that the symbolic privatization of the corporation was the joint product of both liberal and progressive legal theorizing. Further, I show that 'naturalizing analogies' are key to understanding this conceptual transformation. In tracing the legal theorization of the corporation, I show how the instability of naturalizing analogies, and their ability to entail associations beyond those intended by their proponents, played a role in corporate reclassification and are therefore critical to understanding the symbolic structure of corporate capitalism. The article discusses Lifeway Foods' rejection of a takeover offer from Danone, raising questions about the strategic decisions of both companies. Danone, which already holds a 23.4% stake in Lifeway, offered to buy the remaining shares at $25 each, but Lifeway deemed the offer undervalued. The rejection may be influenced by a family dispute within Lifeway's leadership, and Lifeway remains open to other offers while Danone may come back with an improved bid. The article provides insights into the complex dynamics of corporate negotiations and potential acquisitions in the dairy and soy food industry. [Extracted from the article]
