Having a noble livelihood is one of the majority's wishes, but there are souls stuck in the mud and poverty. This includes paid women who are willing to take risks and face the scorn of others just to sell sexual services in exchange for money. This qualitative research gave a voice to women in the field of prostitution to reveal their perspective and psychological struggle in their occupation. The data in this research came from interviews with female sex workers from Metro Manila. The obtained information was analyzed through thematic analysis. Based on the research results, the main themes were developed and extended: poverty, clinging to the knife, life's blows, living despite the humiliation, faith, and new hope. Despite the negative connotations, it can be seen that hope has sprouted in their feelings. There is hope that, in time, they will be able to get out of their misery. Both political theorists and scholars working on populism with an ideational approach have frequently noted that populists are averse to compromise. However, the negative relationship between populism and compromise has not been analyzed in detail. In this paper, we offer a comprehensive account of the reasons behind this oft-repeated conflict between populist narratives and the practice of compromise, disentangling the various dimensions of such incompatibility and exploring their connections. We rely on theoretical and empirical research on populism, supplemented by illustrative examples and references to political theory with an anti-pluralist coloration and the opponents thereof. We compare populist objections with Baume and Papadopoulos’s typology of objections to political compromises. We demonstrate that populist objections only partly overlap with those inventoried in the typology, notably along the moral and antagonistic dimensions, while the populist claim that compromises denature the unmediated expression of the popular will has not been considered before. Through an exploratory case study, we further reflect on how populists justify compromises when they are in power, notwithstanding their ideological reluctances. A 1508 adage by Erasmus about the Batavian ear is often interpreted as an expression of nationalism. Serious doubts can be raised against such interpretations since there was no such thing as nationalism in the early sixteenth century. Besides this, the interpretation is inconsistent with Erasmus’s degenerative expressions about Batavians and Hollanders elsewhere; nor does the adage describe the Batavians or Hollanders in a truly positive way. I propose an alternative to the nationalistic interpretation of the adage. Based on the Auris Batava, his correspondence, and the rest of his broad oeuvre, I argue that the references to Batavians throughout Erasmus’s works are instead a response to humanist Italy, where a negative stereotype of Northerners was prevalent and where one prided oneself on an ancient lineage. Born in Rotterdam, Erasmus could not appropriate this ancient Roman heritage and therefore took recourse to the Batavians. He appropriated biases against the supposed negative characteristics of the Northerners and Batavians as well, but used these to emphasize his own achievements. Erasmus’s establishment of a Batavian identity can thus be deemed a form of Erasmian modesty, a type of rhetoric that is evident more broadly in his oeuvre. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper looks at how a metaphoric vocabulary borrowed from the skazka was used to illustrate dialectical materialism in popular science writing of the early 1930s. In examining the emergence and function of this new style, which I term "dialectical skazochnost'," I offer an explanation of the animated nature trope, which appeared frequently in texts for young readers during the First Five‐Year Plan. Rather than contradicting materialism, the anthropomorphization of non‐living matter in stories about "conquering nature" arose out of an effort to illustrate how natural forces previously considered immutable could be transformed for human use. A popular conception of dialectical materialism guided this use of figurative language, which had been scorned by radical critics during the skazka debates of the late 1920s. I look primarily at two books by M. Il'in, The Story of the Great Plan (1930) and Men and Mountains (1935), which exemplify the use of dialectical skazochnost'. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Whereas past research on the trickle-down diffusion of abusive supervision has demonstrated that abused supervisors often translate the abuse that they experience from their managers downward to their followers, we examine the active involvement of abused supervisors through leading in a more principled and positive manner. Adopting the sociofunctional perspective on emotions, we propose that supervisors who feel contempt for their abusers and are morally attentive will be motivated to morally differentiate themselves from perpetrators by treating their subordinates with greater, rather than less, interpersonal justice. Four studies, including two survey-based studies and two scenario-based experiments, based on data collected in China and the United Kingdom show consistent evidence supporting the overall moderated mediation model. The American philosophical tradition emphasizes the role of experience as part of philosophical discourse and scholarship. Individuals like Henry Bugbee and Henry David Thoreau described their experiences walking, for example, and connected these experiences with philosophical concepts. My overall contention is to remind us of the importance of sport experiences for our scholarly work. In Part One, I outline the nature of experience and why this is crucial for sport philosophers and sport philosophy. In Part Two, I turn to the process of reflecting on experience, exploring how reflection happens and the import of reflection for our lives and writing. Finally, in Part Three, I move to the writing process related to sport experiences. The manner in which we articulate philosophic principles and arguments, even though these points may be written in third-person, may also be informed by and through an experiential lens. This essay distinguishes democratic melodrama from authoritarian melodrama. We argue that the distinction between the two forms of melodrama is not merely located in the "eye of the beholder," but can be found within the rhetorical form based on the way that the melodrama is figured. First, we argue that democratic melodrama is characterized by the use of a double gesture, which polarizes and offers the possibility of affirmation and reconnection—a key difference from authoritarian melodrama, which seeks primarily to exclude and condemn. Second, democratic melodrama generates monopathy, a unity of feeling, in its audience that enables interdependency with the other, while authoritarian melodrama engages in contempt for the other, which enables repression and oppression. Finally, the villain in democratic melodrama is typically a behavior, ideology, or institution, while in authoritarian melodrama the villain is typically scapegoated as a member of an "outgroup" that is dehumanized. When imagining their futures, people can prioritize getting there the easy way, prefer more demanding paths, or be indifferent to means and focus only on making progress. Identity-based motivation theory predicts and mixed effect regressions reveal that what people infer about themselves when facing unchosen life difficulties and when thinking about or working on goals feels hard shapes action (N = 537 undergraduates, three studies). To varying degrees, they can infer that unchosen life difficulties build character (difficulty-as-improvement), that chosen goals are really not for them (difficulty-as-impossibility), and that chosen goals are valuable for them (difficulty-as-importance). The more people endorse difficulty-as-impossibility, the more they choose ease. The more they endorse difficulty-as-improvement the more they disdain ease and prefer the effortful way. In 1992, Barbara Laslett and Barrie Thorne organized a symposium in Sociological Theory with the aim of tearing down a "wall of silence" between feminist theory and the mainstream of sociological theorizing. For help, the editors turned to the work of Dorothy E. Smith, the renowned theoretician and methodologist. Smith's theorizing today carries even greater appeal, having expanded from a sociology for women to a sociology for people. This wider scope never sacrifices her project's theoretical versatility and nimbleness and disdain for abstraction. In offering a critical tribute to Smith, who passed away in June 2022 at the age of 95, the present symposium invited three scholars—Paige Sweet, Rebecca Lund, and Marjorie DeVault—to share new reflections on the legacy of Smith's powerful mode of inquiry. Though a handful of European accounts of Saharan travel predate the 1830 French invasion of Algiers, this event marked a turning point in French experience with deserts. The period of French occupation fostered a growing belief in the Maghreb's gradual environmental degradation and a desire to "restore" its inherent fertility. The late-nineteenth century plan to create an artificial inland sea represents a grandiose, transformative vision of French colonialism. Influenced by Saint-Simonianism, the project's advocates aimed to use modern technology to fulfill a utopian dream of "reclaiming" the Sahara. Led by Captain François-Élie Roudaire, the project aimed to channel waters from the Mediterranean into saline depressions in the Tunisian and Algerian Sahara. This sea, it was hoped, would transform the northern Sahara into a milder and more hospitable environment. Although it garnered the support of Ferdinand de Lesseps and other notable figures, the project fell apart by the mid- 1880 s. While the vision of a vast inland Saharan sea occasionally resurfaced through the twentieth century, it never manifested in any genuine construction attempts. The Sahara Sea, however, characterizes aspects of the French colonial enterprise that would manifest in other social and technological developments throughout the colonial and postcolonial periods. Communication has always featured prominently in Weimar research. Disputes about how the war was lost, the disdain in which the republic was held by its foes, the scepticism with which it was regarded by many of its citizens, and the manifold ways its various crises were interpreted—the history of the republic offered many angles from which to assess how communication was used to process events. Taking their cue from more recent trends in Weimar scholarship, however, the essays in this issue set new emphases. Not only have their authors chosen innovative topics, but they have approached them with an acute sensitivity to situations, settings, discourses and practices. They pose questions about the specific conditions, channels and practices of communication in the Weimar Republic and consider the complex mixture of interconnected communicative actions between different groups at different levels of society, nationally and internationally. By so doing they address the issue of communication as one of the most vibrant aspects of a society that was marked by rapid technological developments as well as political change. Frenemies, partners who appear to be friends on the surface, yet purport to dislike one another, have received less attention in the scholarly literature than friends and enemies. To explore the discordant and complicated relationship known as frenemyship, 72 undergraduates completed an open-ended online survey that was coded using inductive thematic analysis. Findings indicate that frenemies play a significant role in people's lives and represent not just a behavioral form (e.g., relational aggression), but an independent relational type characterized by disguised disdain. Results indicate that people maintain frenemyships because relational benefits (e.g., saving face, maintaining social networks, and sustaining potential instrumental connections) outweigh negative ramifications of dealing with the relationship or terminating it. From these findings, we propose a definition of frenemyship as a discordant relationship in which one or both parties engage in cordial interactions, while simultaneously evaluating the other in a distrustful, unfriendly, even hostile, manner. Scholarship on police violence tends to either center the historical role of the institution in protecting an unequal social order or the individual use of force. To broaden our understanding and unpack how violence manifests in everyday interactions, we examined 251 accounts of police encounters in Ottawa, Canada. Finding that disrespect was disturbingly common, we developed a typology that highlights the spectrum of police disrespect as it manifests through: a) denial of bodily autonomy, b) demeaning verbal interactions, and c) disdain. We argue that everyday police disrespect may appear banal compared to the use of physical force, but that it is a significant part of a continuum of dehumanization that creates an atmosphere that renders police violence possible. Is it possible to disagree with someone without considering them cognitively flawed? The answer seems to be a resounding yes : disagreeing with someone doesn't entail thinking less of them. You can disagree with someone and not think that they are unreasonable. Deep disagreements, however, may challenge this assumption. A disagreement is deep when it involves many interrelated issues, including the proper way to resolve the disagreement, resulting in its persistence. The parties to a deep disagreement can hold neutral or even positive judgements of each other's epistemic character, as parties' judging each other's epistemic character negatively (i.e., epistemic disdain) is not a defining feature of deep disagreements. When analysing real-life cases, however, we find that epistemic disdain is typical of deep disagreements. In this article, I analyse why this is the case. Given that epistemic disdain undermines cognitive peerhood, the prospects of deep disagreements between epistemic peers seem bleak. Finally, it is discussed how the phenomenon of epistemic disdain, as it relates to deep disagreements, may increase affective polarisation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 2019, I directed the installation-performance Relatos Nebulosos (RN), featuring relatives of forcibly disappeared individuals in Colombia. In this article, I explore the artistic visibility of these victims, who demonstrate resilience and demand justice, while also contributing to the critical discourse surrounding their struggle. To do so, I establish three key aspects. Firstly, I provide contextualization by sharing the stories of the RN protagonists, offering insights into the regions they refer to and conveying the profound impact of disappearance on their families, who grapple with the uncertainty surrounding their loved ones' whereabouts. Secondly, I delve into the ethical dimension of the project, witnessing how the protagonists meticulously construct a documentary narrative that relies on their own bodies, simultaneously navigating a complex emotional relationship with the documents associated with this process--expressing affection towards photographs and disdain for bureaucratic paperwork. Lastly, I highlight the significance of art in granting a voice to the victims, outlining my endeavors to create new avenues of expression by reimagining the daily lives of the RN protagonists through a montage, while drawing metaphors between the tangible elements of the artwork and the elusive nature of forced disappearance. Ultimately, this article concludes that RN thrives on the improbable, enabling art to give form to the uncertainty experienced by these families and drive social strategies that facilitate the search for the missing, leading to a sense of inner peace for their loved ones. It also asserts that both academic and non-academic realms have the potential to contribute to a world where this heinous crime is combated. The article's uniqueness lies in revealing the behind-the-scenes of the creative process behind RN, analyzing the reconfiguration of the everyday experiences of the relatives into a performative installation and examining their interaction with bureaucratic formats related to disappearance. The flare-up of hostilities in Ethiopia's Tigray district in November 2020 is simply the aftereffect of a forced battle between so-called reformist Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's central government and the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF). This previous revolutionary development ruled Ethiopian legislative issues for over 25 years before Abiy's rise to control of power in 2018. Numerous Ethiopians considered the TPLF's rule authoritative, and misconducts executed under its authority stirred up scorn in several groups. The fight additionally displays ethnic strains in the country, which have been exacerbated as of late as the nation goes through political and financial modifications. The advancing battle has effectively brought about outrage, expanded the flow of refugees, and stressed territorial relations. This research article provides an account of the origins of the TPLF and the Tigrayans, Eritrea's involvement in the conflict, the sources of tension, and the paths to war. Finally, the repercussions of Ethiopia's Tigray conflict and its corollaries on the Horn of Africa. The research is aimed to know the oppressors' luring of people with reference to the story of Pharaoh mentioned in the Qur'an, and to define the meaning of luring and clarify the specific factors of the oppressors in luring others, and the statement of the methods and means they use to achieve this. The research includes an introduction, the research problem, its objectives and importance, its limits, and previous studies. The importance of this research is highlighted in the fact that it deals with an important topic experienced by the Arab and Islamic nation in this era, where it deals with another type of solicitation not addressed by many researchers before. It also provides a societal awareness that can help people realize the means and methods of the oppressors in trying to deceive them and how people face the oppressors by walking in the right prophetic approach. The research is divided into two sections. The first section deals with the concept of luring and its factors. And the second section focuses on the means and methods of luring that Pharaoh used. The research reveals that the luring of the oppressors for others occurs due to the availability of many factors that tyrants exploit to lure their people, and ensure their permanent dominance. It also shows that the oppressors have a special view of the masses they rule, so even if they possess the means and methods that help them to lure, the heedlessness of the masses is the first determinant of their success, and this is the structure that the oppressors seek to maintain in the minds of the masses. This reflects that the reality in which we live today is based on the same old methods, even if the names are different. As long as the masses live in an unbalanced circle, legally and customarily, the oppressors' disdain for their minds is the inevitable outcome. The research recommends that the Arab and Islamic peoples must follow the Qur'anic and Prophetic approach, and beware of falling into the trap of oppressors' temptation of the minds of their heedless people. Conflicts between the Qimant community – an intra‐state minority ethnic group endogenous to Amhara state in the Ethiopian federation – and the state's special police forces have caused hundreds of deaths and the internal displacement of close to 50,000 people. Linked to these conflicts are the Qimants' demands for recognition as a distinct ethnic community and the establishment of local government in the territories they inhabit; demands which have not received a satisfactory response from the federal or Amhara state government and which officials view with disdain. The situation raises several questions. Do the federal and regional‐state constitutions provide the necessary framework for accommodating intra‐state ethnic minorities such as the Qimant? If they do, why have the two levels of government failed to resolve the Qimant issue peacefully? What institutional mechanisms could they have used to satisfy the demands of the Qimant community? This article focuses on two writers whose work on Panama and Nicaragua confronts Britain's supersession by the United States as the hegemonic power in Central America. Reading the nurse and memoirist Mary Seacole and the novelist and civil servant Anthony Trollope, I argue that these British subjects both understood the fate of the Empire as tied to that of the Central American transit zones, particularly the transoceanic route across Panama. They differed, however, on whom waning British influence in Central America would benefit. While Trollope saw commercial and cultural continuity in an uninterrupted Anglo-American dominance of the hemisphere, Seacole, a Black Jamaican for whom the Empire functioned as a guarantor of political status within a larger colonial framework, worried that the United States would subject the region to its regime of strict racial separation. Taken together, these accounts suggest a surprising inversion of imperial identifications: Trollope evinces an informal imperialist's disdain for official entanglements, while Seacole emphasizes that her status as a British subject entails a duty on the part of the Empire to protect the region and its people from American rapaciousness. In 2016, J.D. Vance published Hillbilly Elegy, a memoir of his ascension from rust-belt poverty to Yale Law School. Under Donald Trump’s caustic shadow, liberal audiences celebrated the book for its honest description and measured analysis. In 2021, Vance set his sights on a seat in the US Senate and built a successful campaign based on speaking out against what he considered the greatest threats to American prosperity, including the “Biden border crisis,” Critical Race Theory’s divisive influence, and abortion. During the campaign, liberal media was fixated on the contrast between Vance’s measured voice in his memoir and the inflammatory rhetoric of his campaign, and concluded that the thoughtful memoirist had turned into a bigoted monster. Through an analysis of Hillbilly Elegy’s open disdain for those Vance deemed irresponsible – drug users, the unemployed, recipients of social assistance, among others – as well as his explicit and unyielding faith that persecuting these people would solve otherwise intractable social problems, this essay argues that the dominant account of Vance’s political transformation sweeps the uncomfortable history of his liberal allure under the rug and obscures the force behind his appeal. When Alexander Grechaninov's opera Sister Beatrice on a text by Maurice Maeterlinck premiered in Moscow in 1912, it promised to bring together two conceptual worlds, those of symbolist aesthetics and the Russian Orthodox liturgy. Critics who hoped that Grechaninov's experience as a composer of sacred music would help bring alive the 'unheard music' of Maeterlinck's symbolist 'Miracle Play', however, were sorely disappointed. The opera drew scorn from critics for its overly concrete musical rhetoric, while conservative commentators levelled claims of blasphemy. In this article, I consider the two scenes depicting miracles in Sister Beatrice to demonstrate how it negotiated these competing perspectives, employing insights from religious philosophy as well as symbolist aesthetics. Drawing on new archival evidence, I also demonstrate how church and state censors co-participated with composers and critics debating whether and how the sacred might be displayed on stage and in sound. Responding to the too-optimistic theology of fellow Arminian, John Taylor, John Wesley wrote his lengthy treatise on the doctrine of original sin. In an optimistic effort to make fellow personalist theologians' works accessible, Methodist theologian Georgia Harkness tersely disdained the same doctrine in her first major book. She soon found her liberal theology "chastened" by interactions with neo-orthodox opponents and experiences of depravity—in world events and gender-based discrimination reflecting systemic sin. This article examines her later works for evidence of whether Harkness modified her attitude toward original sin and innovations she made to accommodate both her disdain for the doctrine and the realities of depravity. In recent years, protesters around the world have been calling for the removal of commemorations honouring those who are, by contemporary standards, generally regarded as seriously morally compromised by their racism. According to one line of thought, leaving racist memorials in place is profoundly disrespectful, and doing so tacitly condones, and perhaps even celebrates, the racism of those honoured and memorialized. The best response is to remove the monuments altogether. In this article, I first argue against a prominent offense‐based account of the wrong of simply leaving memorials in place, unaltered, before offering my own account of this wrong. In at least some cases, these memorials wrong insofar as they express and exemplify a morally objectionable attitude of race‐based contempt. I go on to argue that the best way of answering this disrespect is through a process of expressively 'dehonouring' the subject. Removal of these commemorations is ultimately misguided, in many cases, because removal, by itself, cannot adequately dishonour, and simple removal does not fully answer the ways in which these memorials wrong. I defend a more nuanced approach to answering the wrong posed by these monuments, and I argue that public expressions of contempt through defacement have an ineliminable role to play in an apt dishonouring process. It is obvious that there can be no security without information security. Staying in one or another in formation space changes consciousness, forces people to commit crimes of varying degrees of severity, or to justify supporting criminals. An important tool in the violation of information security is propaganda, which does not disdain any methods to achieve the goal, including using fake photo, video, and audio files to realize informational and psychological influence on society. The methods of dealing with such cases are comprehensive and complex in nature. Among them, the methods of establishing the truth of digital content or proving that this or that in formation is fake play an important role. When forging digital files, in particular, digital images, post-processing methods such as blurring, multiplicative noise, etc. are often used. Identifying these types of post-processing is currently not a solved task, although it has certain successes. The purpose of this work is to improve the detection efficiency of digital image processing by developing a blur detection method and a multiplicative noise detection method. A computational experiment was conducted, as a result of which it was established that the discrete cosine transformation is a convenient and effective tool for detecting Gaussian blur and multiplicative noise. Blur ring reduces the value of high-frequency DCP coefficients, while multiplicative noise increases them. At the same time, the raw image has high-frequency coefficients within a certain norm. In the work, it was possible to single out threshold values that allow recording deviations from the norm in one direction or another, on the basis of which a method for detecting blur ring and a method for detecting multiplicative noise, based on the analysis of high-frequency coefficients of DCP, was developed. Sinter composition optimization is an important process of iron and steel companies. To increase companies' profits, they often rely on innovative technology or the workers' operating experience to improve final productions. However, the former is costly because of patents, and the latter is error-prone. In addition, traditional linear programming optimization methods of sinter compositions are inefficient in the face of large-scale problems and complex nonlinear problems. In this paper, we are the first to propose a regressive convolutional neural network (RCNN) approach for the sinter composition optimization (SCORN). Our SCORN is a single input and multiple outputs regression model. Sinter plant production is used as the input of the SCORN model, and the outputs are the optimized sintering compositions. The SCORN model can predict the optimal sintering compositions to reduce the input of raw materials consumption to save costs and increase profits. By constructing a new neural network structure, the RCNN model is trained to increase its feature extraction capability for sintering production. The SCORN model has a better performance compared with several regressive approaches. The practical application of this predictive model can not only formulate corresponding production plans without feeding materials but also give better input parameters of sintered raw materials during the sintering process. The concept of imagined community has been deeply influential in scholarly understandings of nationality. In the three decades since its inception, however, the concept has expanded to be applied to a wider array of communities and identities, such as the elderly, secularists, hackers, and the LGBTQ + community. The bulk of this research has emphasized the in‐group solidarity produced by imagined communities. Yet, a small body of research specifically on LGBTQ + imagined communities suggests that imagined community may also be alienating and marginalizing. Based on analysis of interviews with 29 non‐heterosexual men, I find that respondents simultaneously discursively use the gay imagined community to stake a claim in community membership and to distance themselves from what they perceive to be negative aspects of that same community. This suggests that imagined communities can serve a more ambivalent function, both fostering solidarity and building boundaries. This essay demarcates between and among schools of dialogue, differentiating relational points of meaning origins. Contrasting dialogic roots constitute distinctions in social meaning and signification. Schools of dialogue embrace the relational interplay of address and response, with exchanges consisting of multiple simultaneous conversations. Their co-presence announces dialogic hypertextuality, which acknowledges and affirms multiple simultaneous conversations and meanings within a given encounter. No single interpreter or meaning captures dialogic existence; meanings push the boundaries of any exchange, before, during, and after. Dialogic exchanges embody multiple discourses that call forth distinctive dimensions of meaning. As one speaks, multiple conversations, inclusive of previous and anticipatory dialogues, shape us. Why disdain (perfectly) replicated art? If art is valuable because it evokes experiences of beauty, they should be comparable. In chapter 11 of the Elephant in the Brain, Simler and Hanson (S&H) argue we actually care about the extrinsic properties of art—e.g. who made it—to signal our intelligence and taste. Here I defend a different explanation for the evidence cited by S&H: the extrinsic properties of art are central to what constitutes art, play a bigger role fixing the value of art than S&H allow, and the potential for diminishing marginal utility on the value of the intrinsic properties of art—seeing the original Mona Lisa is rare; seeing a copy isn't—explains why we assign such value to the extrinsic properties of art. And thus we have a non-signaling explanation of art consumption, which may or may not complement signaling theory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
