This article features interviews with two talented clarinetists from Czechia, Anna Paulová and Ivo Kahánek. Anna discusses her experiences as a musician and her love for the clarinet, highlighting the differences in the contexts in which she performs. Abstract

Gesture in a broader sense is more than a physical movement but, can also be modes of expression representing specific meanings. Movements with meaning embodies gesture and gesture exists in various artforms like music because of its capacity to express. Its capability to transform through time and space makes it akin to energy and it is parallel with the art of composing music. Musical gesture however, are being studied at different levels so as to classify and to relate different functions of gestures. This article intends to demonstrate the use of musical gestures into composing music for a solo wind instrument. Three solo pieces for clarinet were written by three different composers approaching musical composition through gestural writing. To realize the imagined sound and movements of the clarinet, the composers' composing process concentrated more on the gestural movements and tone colours of the selected wind instrument. The musical gesture in these three solo pieces is actually capturing the movement and sense of movement through music, and its essence lies in the subconscious lines connected to create direction and motion in both pieces. A controversial period in humanity’s evolution is the previous century, the 20th, viewed both from a constructive and a destructive point of view. Technical progress and scientific discoveries led the human dimension towards a huge leap of civilization. But this computerized trajectory holds unlimited possibilities in creating balance or chaos within the human. The multiple effects of modern technology on human life can affect, even completely change, interpersonal communication. In the thinking of Romanian composers, especially in the second half of the 20th century, new concepts and working techniques are designed. Among these, we mention dodecaphonic serialism, integral serialism, heterophony, rhythm with added values, texture, aleatoric, etc., all leading to a totally new, experimental acceptance. Abstract

This article proposes to create a connection between two seemingly contradictory universes: the art of sculpture and the art of music. The creation of one of the most important sculptors of the 20th century, Constantin Brâncuși, became an inexhaustible source of inspiration for artists from different domains, especially for musicians, Romanian composers creating diverse symphonic works inspired by the artist’s sculptures. Background: In the history of art, Brâncuși makes a striking turn. He adopts a unique attitude, carving directly in the material from which the work of art originates, bringing in contemporary symbols or forms that remind us the charms of the Neolithic populations, of deities that were venerated and transposed into stone figures, as well as by translating into sculpture the purest expressions of human spirituality. Tiberiu Olah is the Romanian composer who offered Constantin Brâncuși’s masterpieces a significant place in his musical works. He created distinguished compositions inspired by Brâncuși’s most important sculptures, by appealing to modern, avant-garde musical language and non-discursive dramaturgy. Methods: In order to demonstrate the connection between the two arts we will describe the main musical aspects of the Majestic Bird – Sonata for solo clarinet by Tiberiu Olah, in connection with the significance of Constantin Brâncuși’s homonymous sculpture. Perhaps the greatest challenge of Constantin Brâncuși’s artistic life was the illustration of the flight, the ascension through the symbol of the bird. Brâncuşi was inspired by the legends found in the Romanian fairy tales of the Majestic Bird, a magical character that also has a protective role. In the evolutionary process of creating the sculpture, the bird gained an elongated form, reduced to essence, “gradually giving it a naturalness, a dynamism, and finally an ascending force line, even tending to create the illusion of its detachment from the base in flight”. Tiberiu Olah creates a monodic work for the clarinet, in which he transforms or metamorphoses an archetypal folk melodic source with modern compositional means, in similar way to Brâncuși offering a unique interpretation of a figure drawn from the archaic funerary sculpture. Results, Conclusion: Finally, this research aims to demonstrate, as a synthesis, the musical illustration of the flight and the modern techniques which symbolize the evolution and the unrestrained inspiration of the composer. Thus, Pasărea Măiastră – Majestic Bird – Sonata for solo clarinet is a model of modern creation in which archaic musical elements of folk essence are developed and transformed by means of avant-garde compositions. The main topic of the thesis is review and analysis of the compositions of Slovak composers for the solo clarinet or the clarinet with combination of other musical instrument. It provides the list of the most significant clarinet compositions including the solo as well as the wide chamber music production with the clarinet presence. It points to the significant role of the clarinet in the specific compositions, defines them in more details together with the view on a composer´s composition style. This article examines the nature of skilled practice within two settings of musical performance, the rehearsal and the compositional workshop. Drawing primarily on the work of Richard Sennett and Tim Ingold, I suggest that a characterisation of musical performance as a craft practice attends to the development of skill and expertise through the performer’s physical and everyday encounters with the world and provokes a reconsideration of the dimensions of performance that might otherwise be taken for granted. The first case study addresses rhythmic coordination during a rehearsal of Four Duets for clarinet and piano (2012), composed by Edmund Finnis for Mark Simpson and Víkingur Ólafsson, and the second traces the development of instrumental techniques by composer Evan Johnson and performer Carl Rosman as they collaborate on a new work for historical basset clarinet, ‘indolentiae ars’, a medium to be kept (2015). The article makes the case for skilled practice as an improvisatory interplay between performers and the meshwork of people, objects, histories and processes which they inhabit.
