5. The More the Merrier? On the Influence of Indexical Variability on Second Language Vocabulary Learning.

We investigated indexical variation as a variable that promotes second language (L2) vocabulary learning across language modalities. In three experiments, we presented Catalan Sign Language signs (Experiments 1a and 1b), pseudowords (Experiment 2), and English words (Experiment 3) to participants in three conditions that varied in the number of people who introduced these stimuli (one, three, or six people). We evaluated learning outcomes in two recall tasks: a picture‐to‐L2 naming task and a L2‐to‐L1 translation task. For the sign modality, indexical variation benefitted the immediate recall of signs in the translation task (Experiment 1a) and delayed recall after two weeks in the picture naming task (Experiment 1b). For the oral modality, we observed no effect when participants learned pseudowords (Experiment 2), but variability benefited recall in the translation task when participants learned English words (Experiment 3). We discuss these contrastive results, considering the influence of indexical variation in adult L2 sign and oral vocabulary learning. 6. On the nature of role shift: Insights from a comprehension study in different populations of LIS, LSC and LSF signers.

Attitude role shift is a sign language strategy to report someone else's utterance or thought. It has been analyzed either as a kind of demonstration or, alternatively, as a complex construction involving subordination plus a context-shifting operator. The present work reports the results of a sentence-to-picture matching task developed in three different sign languages (Italian Sign Language, French Sign Language and Catalan Sign Language) with the aim of providing experimental evidence about the nature of role shift. The task assessed the comprehension of indexical first-person pronouns in various syntactic contexts with and without role shift. We showed that constructions with role shift, which require context-shifting for the first-person pronoun, are never easier to comprehend than constructions without role shift that do not require context-shifting. In some cases, they are even more difficult. Additionally, we show that, in Italian Sign Language only, sentences in which the role shifted first-person pronoun is in object position are more difficult than sentences in which it is in subject position. We argue that this can be interpreted as an intervention effect and that this is an argument in favor of positing a context-shifting operator in the periphery of the role shift clause. Considering that the population of adult Deaf signers includes, besides native signers, a majority of individuals with a more or less severe delayed first language exposure, the second goal of this paper is to study the effects of age of exposure on comprehension of sentences with role shift. In the three languages under investigation, we found that native signers generally outperformed non-native signers in sentences with role shift and in subordinate clauses without role shift. This confirms that delayed language exposure has a lasting impact on adults' comprehension of subordinate clauses of various degrees of complexity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This contribution aims to analyse the types of word formation processes for signs denominating Catalan Deaf organisations in Catalan Sign Language. First, a corpus has been created from video-signed texts by identifying and extracting terms of the associate-member organisations. Second, a terminological data file template has been designed using common standard criteria to feed a terminological database. Following the group's previous work (Jarque, Bosch-Baliarda, & Codorniu, 2019), 4 types of lexicalisation processes have been analysed: formal (e.g. compounding, blending), functional (e.g lexicalisation, zero derivation), borrowing (e.g loanwords, mouthings) and semantic (e.g semantic change, extension). The cognitive mechanisms involved (conceptual metaphor and metonymy) are also described. The analysis is framed within the construction-based theoretical models and points out the need to establish new complex non-linear models to explain the multiple processes involved. This paper investigates the morpho-phonological differences between the members of related noun-verb pairs in Catalan Sign Language. Like parallel investigations in other sign languages, our experimental work provides evidence that the major differentiating factors between related nouns and verbs materialize in the movement component of signs and non-manual markers, thus providing empirical support to the hypothesis that most of noun-verb pairs have different morpho-phonological properties. We distinguish different types of movements, which we categorize into four regular morphological subgroups. We also take into account a fifth group that shows no apparent movement distinction. Concerning non-manual markers, we provide empirical evidence that nouns are mostly produced simultaneously with mouthing, in contrast to verbs, which in a smaller proportion are produced mainly with mouth gestures. Crucially, the fifth group presents the largest ratio of mouthing for nouns and even for verbs. This paper discusses two interrelated dimensions of sign languages: their scientific study and their social and legal status. Firstly, it traces the history of research on sign languages, indicating the different approaches adopted throughout the years and contextualizing the contributions that make up the monograph. It also points out the important contributions offered by the research in this area to the general theory of language. In addition, we address the main differences that can arise in the gestural - visual linguistic modality. Secondly , we focus on the main characteristics of deaf signers groups that contribute to the theory on the relationship between language and identity phenomena . Finally, we describe the legal status of the languages under scrutiny and recent initiatives pursuing their legal recognition., En este trabajo se abordan dos dimensiones sobre las lenguas de signos interrelacionadas: su estudio científico y su estatus social y legal. En primer lugar se traza la trayectoria de la investigación acerca de las lenguas de signos, indicando las diferentes perspectivas adoptadas a lo largo de los años y contextualizando las aportaciones que integran el monográfico. Asimismo, se indica la importante contribución que ha supuesto la investigación en el área a la teoría general sobre el lenguaje y las lenguas. También se indican las principales diferencias que posibilita la modalidad lingüística gestual - visual. En seg undo lugar, se abordan las principales particularidades de los colectivos de personas sordas signantes que contribuyen a la teoría sobre las relaciones entre los fenómenos lingüísticos y los fenómenos identitarios. 18. From gesture- and sign-in-interaction to grammar: Fictive questions for relative clauses in signed languages

We discuss the use of the question-answer pattern for relativization across signed languages, with special attention for Catalan Sign Language. These are cases in which grammatical features of the interrogative construction used for genuine information-seeking questions also appear as the most unmarked, frequent, or only linguistic means of expressing restrictive and non-restrictive relative clauses, as well as appositives. This is intriguing, since relative clauses occur within one sentence and thus within one conversational turn, whereas the question-answer structure is prototypically dialogical, representing the turn-taking between addresser and addressee. We analyze such interrogative-like constructions as involving fictive interaction, the use of the conversation frame to structure cognition, discourse, and grammar (Pascual, 2006, 2014). We further suggest that the non-manual feature of eyebrow raising, which marks both information-seeking questions and relative clauses in Catalan Sign Language, became grammaticalized from a common non-obligatory gesture in the spoken Catalan of the surrounding hearing community. Hence, a gesture accompanying spoken language became a linguistic marker in a signed language, illustrating transfer between languages of different modalities. This is also presented as showing the emergence of grammar from situated intersubjective interaction (Li and Thompson, 1976; Sankoff and Brown, 1976). We make a case for the understanding of grammatical structure as primarily reflecting its mode of usage rather than some sui-generis Universal Grammar. This paper is based on the bibliographic study of 17 signed languages from different families and the qualitative analysis of own Catalan Sign Language data from different discourse genres.

In this paper, we examine agent backgrounding in Italian Sign Language (LIS). Specifically, we are interested in identifying and describing the strategies used by LIS signers to reduce referentiality. On the basis of low-referential contexts (cf. questionnaire in the Introduction chapter), we recorded target sentences containing potential markers of agent backgrounding and asked three LIS native signers to provide felicity judgments on them using a 7-point scale. We discuss agent-backgrounding strategies of different types: (i) manual, (ii) non-manual, and (iii) syntactic. Overall, our study shows that the combination of raised eyebrows and mouth-corners down associated with the existential quantifier someone and the sign person makes the agent-backgrounding reading more prominent. Other strategies that can be used in LIS to reduce referentiality are free relatives, perspective shift, and null subject. We also investigate in more detail the semantic status of someone, person, and the null subject through well-established tests from the literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Treball de fi del grau del Doble grau en Traducció i Interpretació i Llengües Aplicades. Tutora: Gemma Barberà Altimira El desconeixement o la percepció errònia de la llengua de signes (LS), així com de la cultura i la comunitat Sorda, és un fet generalitzat a la societat i, en conseqüència, persistent a la major part de la comunitat educativa oïdora, que es perpetua quan es pren consciència del món que engloba aquesta llengua més enllà de l’àmbit lingüístic. En el present treball, s’estableix com a objectiu clau la creació d’una proposta de curs de formació de llengua de signes catalana (LSC) per al professorat, tot prenent un enfocament comunicatiu orientat a l’acció d’acord amb la metodologia d’ensenyament-aprenentatge basada en tasques. Així, per a una millor aproximació al món de la LSC, s’elaboren un seguit de materials de suport visuals, tant lingüístics com sobre la cultura de la comunitat Sorda, que es posen en consonància amb el curs gràcies a un entorn virtual d’ensenyament-aprenentatge. Prenent com a punt de partida els reptes i necessitats actuals de la LSC, es duu a terme una recerca documental i la pertinent selecció dels materials disponibles en aquest àmbit per tal d’assolir els propòsits establerts. En aquest sentit, aquest projecte contribueix a fer un pas més cap a la supressió de les barreres de comunicació en un camp d’estudi on encara queda un llarg camí per recórrer, tot incloent-hi diversos enfocaments d’ensenyament-aprenentatge de la llengua. A més, en ser un curs en línia, s’obre la porta a la possibilitat real de fer-ne difusió més enllà del col·lectiu docent. The lack of awareness and the misconceptions about sign language (SL) and Deaf community and culture and is a widespread phenomenon in the general society, which is also a persistent fact in most of the hearing educational community. Therefore, it lingers, as well, when it comes to becoming aware of the world that surrounds this language, beyond the linguistic field. The main goal of this paper is to propose a Catalan Sign Language (LSC) course for teachers, based on an action-oriented communicative approach according to a task-based teaching-learning methodology. In this sense, in order to achieve a better approach to the world of LSC, a combination of supplementary visual instructional materials have been designed, both linguistic and focused on the Deaf community and culture, which are put together thanks to a virtual teaching-learning environment. On the basis of the current LSC challenges and needs and with the intention of meeting the established purposes, documentary research has been carried out, in conjunction with the appropriate materials selection from the ones available in this field currently. On this matter, this project contributes in terms of taking a step forward in the removal of communication barriers in a field where there is still a long way to go, enclosing different teaching-learning approaches. Likewise, considering that it is an online course, it opens the door to the real chance of application beyond the teachers group. El desconocimiento o la percepción errónea de la lengua de signos (LS), así como de la cultura y la comunidad Sorda, es un hecho generalizado en la sociedad y, por consiguiente, persistente en la mayor parte de la comunidad educativa oyente, que se perpetúa en cuanto se toma consciencia del mundo que rodea a esta lengua, más allá del ámbito lingüístico. En el presente trabajo, se establece como objetivo principal la creación de una propuesta de curso de formación de lengua de signos catalana (LSC) para el profesorado, adoptando un enfoque comunicativo orientado a la acción conforme con la metodología de enseñanza-aprendizaje basada en tareas. De este modo, para conseguir una mejor aproximación al mundo de la LSC, se elaboran una serie de materiales complementarios visuales, tanto lingüísticos como sobre la cultura de la comunidad Sorda, que se ponen en consonancia con el curso gracias a un entorno virtual de enseñanza-aprendizaje. Estableciendo como punto de partida los retos y necesidades actuales de la LSC, se lleva a cabo una investigación documental y la pertinente selección de materiales disponibles en este ámbito con el fin de cumplir con los propósitos establecidos. En este sentido, este proyecto contribuye dando un paso más hacia la supresión de las barreras de comunicación en un campo de estudio donde aún queda un largo camino por recorrer, incluyendo diferentes enfoques de enseñanza-aprendizaje. Asimismo, en tratarse de un curso en línea, se abre la puerta a la posibilidad real de difusión más allá del colectivo docente.

Attitude role shift is a sign language strategy to report someone else’s utterance or thought. It has been analyzed either as a kind of demonstration or, alternatively, as a complex construction involving subordination plus a context-shifting operator. The present work reports the results of a sentence-to-picture matching task developed in three different sign languages (Italian Sign Language, French Sign Language and Catalan Sign Language) with the aim of providing experimental evidence about the nature of role shift. The task assessed the comprehension of indexical first-person pronouns in various syntactic contexts with and without role shift. We showed that constructions with role shift, which require context-shifting for the first-person pronoun, are never easier to comprehend than constructions without role shift that do not require context-shifting. In some cases, they are even more difficult. Additionally, we show that, in Italian Sign Language only, sentences in which the role shifted first-person pronoun is in object position are more difficult than sentences in which it is in subject position. We argue that this can be interpreted as an intervention effect and that this is an argument in favor of positing a context-shifting operator in the periphery of the role shift clause. Considering that the population of adult Deaf signers includes, besides native signers, a majority of individuals with a more or less severe delayed first language exposure, the second goal of this paper is to study the effects of age of exposure on comprehension of sentences with role shift. In the three languages under investigation, we found that native signers generally outperformed non-native signers in sentences with role shift and in subordinate clauses without role shift. This confirms that delayed language exposure has a lasting impact on adults’ comprehension of subordinate clauses of various degrees of complexity.

Este artículo analiza los resultados de un estudio de recepción con cuestionarios cuyo objetivo era comparar la aceptación por parte de los usuarios finales de las traducciones profesionales y no profesionales en lengua de signos catalana. Para ello, se pidió a cuatro voluntarios de diferentes perfiles (hablantes nativos y estudiantes de traducción) que grabasen en vídeo la traducción de dos cuentos infantiles. Después se diseñó un cuestionario en el que se mostraban dos vídeos (uno de una traducción profesional y otro de una amateur) y se pedía a los encuestados que puntuasen en una escala de Likert ocho categorías que definimos como criterios de calidad de la traducción. En total, 29 personas respondieron el cuestionario, cuyos resultados demostraron que las traducciones amateurs pueden llegar al nivel de las profesionales, siempre y cuando el traductor tenga un buen dominio de la lengua de llegada. Treball de fi de grau en Llengües aplicades. Tutora: Encarna Atienza L’educació infantil a Barcelona en les etapes de primer i segon cicle comprèn la franja d’edat de 0-6 anys. Durant aquesta etapa els infants sords poden assistir a escoles bimodals plurilingües o a escoles ordinàries amb un suport intensiu (SIAL) adreçat a l’oralitat. A Barcelona hi ha dues escoles de referència en bimodalitat que no només agrupen infants de la ciutat, sinó també alumnes de les rodalies de Barcelona. Per saber quin és l’estat actual de la llengua de signes catalana a la ciutat de Barcelona i la bimodalitat, s’elabora un corpus, analitzat en MAXQDA des d’una perspectiva qualitativa descriptiva, en el qual s’aborda la principal documentació legal, pedagògica i de suport que versa sobre l’alumnat sord a l’escola inclusiva. Els resultats mostren que el terme inclusió no està del tot definit en aquests documents i que el que es coneix com a escola inclusiva en el seu 98% parla d’educació unimodal oral. Es fa una petita incursió en un canvi de paradigma i s’elaboren els punts més importants d’aquest nou model d’escola seguint la pregunta de recerca “És viable que els infants no sords i els infants sords rebin una educació bimodal plurilingüe conjunta en l’etapa de 0-6?” La educación infantil en Barcelona en las etapas de primero y segundo ciclo comprende la franja de edad de 0-6 años. Durante esta etapa los infantes sordos pueden asistir a escuelas bimodales plurilingües o a escuelas ordinarias con un apoyo intensivo (SIAL) dirigido a la oralidad. En Barcelona hay dos escuelas de referencia en bimodalidad, que no solo agrupan niños de la ciudad, sino también a alumnos de las cercanías de Barcelona. Para saber cuál es el estado actual de la lengua de signos catalana en la ciudad de Barcelona y la bimodalidad, se elabora un corpus, analizado en MAXQDA desde una perspectiva cualitativa descriptiva, en el que se aborda la principal documentación legal, pedagógica y de apoyo que versa sobre el alumnado sordo en la escuela inclusiva. Los resultados muestran que el término inclusión no está del todo definido en estos documentos y que, el que se conoce como escuela inclusiva, en su 98% habla de educación unimodal oral. Se hace una pequeña incursión en un cambio de paradigma y se elaboran los puntos más importantes de este nuevo modelo de escuela siguiendo la pregunta de investigación “Es viable que los infantes no sordos y los infantes sordos reciban una educación bimodal plurilingüe conjunta en la etapa de 0-6?” Early childhood education in Barcelona in the first and second cycle stages includes the 0-6 age group. During this stage, deaf infants can attend multilingual bimodal schools or ordinary schools with intensive support (SIAL) aimed at orality. In Barcelona there are two reference schools in bimodality, which not only group children from the city, but also students from the outskirts of Barcelona. To find out what is the current state of Catalan Sign Language in the city of Barcelona, a corpus has been created, and analyzed with MAXQDA from a descriptive qualitative perspective, in which the main legal, pedagogical and support documentation is seen in the deaf student context in the inclusive school. Results show that the term inclusion is not fully defined in these documents and that, what is known as inclusive school, in its 98% speaks of oral unimodal education. A small foray into a paradigm shift is made and the most important points of this new school model are elaborated following the research question “Is it feasible for non-deaf infants and deaf infants to receive a joint multilingual bimodal education in the stage of 0-6?

Bringing together the areas of sign language semantics-pragmatics interface and discourse reference, this article offers a description of how indefiniteness and (non-)specificity is encoded in Catalan Sign Language (LSC). By using a combined methodology of corpus data and grammatical tests, the present study shows that the encoding of indefiniteness and specificity in LSC is achieved by three main means, namely lexical signs, the use of nonmanuals, and the use of signing space. The basic primitives required to analyze specificity in LSC comprise wide scope, epistemicity, and partitivity. This article proposes an analysis of the use of signing space in contributing meaning and provides insights into the characterization of the abstract import of signing space. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This, the second of two articles on Catalonian language policies and their sociolinguistic effects, reviews research related to the current policy called the Pla per la Llengua i la Cohesió Social (Plan for Language and Social Cohesion) inaugurated in 2004. The Plan addresses a situation in which Catalan is stable demolinguistically but in which globalization and international immigration are seen as long-term threats to the language's vitality. In addition, language planners were and remain concerned with preserving social cohesion in a much more linguistically and culturally diverse society. We show that this policy builds on and maintains the infrastructure of the prior Normalization policy discussed in Part 1. Nevertheless, it presents a late modern ethos in favor of societal multilingualism that transcends the position in favor of bilingualism aimed for by Normalization. We argue that research on Catalonian society's response to this policy shows some difficulties with implementation and a continuing preoccupation with traditional essentialist ethnolinguistic concerns by some Catalonians. However, we also find that this late modern ethos of multilingualism is assumed by large segments of Catalan society as a representing forward-looking desirable cosmopolitan identity. The article ends with an overview of how recent political developments in relation to Catalonia's political status are linked to language policy and use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims and Objectives: Learning to control reference in narratives is a major step in becoming a speaker of a second language, including a signed language. Previous research describes the pragmatic and cognitive mechanisms that are used for reference control and it is clear that differences are apparent between first and second language speakers. However, some debate exists about the reasons for second language learners’ tendency for over-redundancy in reference forms especially in the use of pronouns. In this study we tested these proposed reasons for L2 differences. Methodology: Narratives by 11 native signers and 13 adult advanced-learners of Catalan sign language were analysed for person reference. Data: Analysis focused on forms for introduction, reintroduction and maintenance of characters. Findings: The results indicate both groups used reference forms according to information saliency principles in similar ways. Differences between the groups were in the use of pronominal signs, where the learners adopted an over-redundancy strategy in line with one hypothesis in the previous studies on second language acquisition in spoken languages. This study investigates the temporal dynamics of sign production and how particular aspects of the signed modality influence the early stages of lexical access. To that end, we explored the electrophysiological correlates associated to sign frequency and iconicity in a picture signing task in a group of bimodal bilinguals. Moreover, a subset of the same participants was tested in the same task but naming the pictures instead. Our results revealed that both frequency and iconicity influenced lexical access in sign production. At the ERP level, iconicity effects originated very early in the course of signing (while absent in the spoken modality), suggesting a stronger activation of the semantic properties for iconic signs. Moreover, frequency effects were modulated by iconicity, suggesting that lexical access in signed language is determined by the iconic properties of the signs. These results support the idea that lexical access is sensitive to the same phenomena in word and sign production, but its time-course is modulated by particular aspects of the modality in which a lexical item will be finally articulated. Treballs Finals de Grau d'Enginyeria Informàtica, Facultat de Matemàtiques, Universitat de Barcelona, Any: 2021, Director: Mireia Ribera, [en] According to the study carried out, from the group of people with disabilities, deaf people are the ones who feel most displaced compared to other groups. The project consists on the implementation of a mobile application on Android which classmates and teachers of deaf students can use to communicate with the student. It contains a compilation of essential words in the school environment altogether with another compilation of phrases that can be most useful in this area. The application will play videos in Catalan sign language, organized by categories, searchable from a search engine and easily navigable. For the development, the Design Thinking methodology has been followed and the advice of several people and associations linked to the world of deafness and sign language has been taken into account. The application complies with the WCAG accessibility guidelines so that anyone can use it.

Les descripcions lingüístiques són una base indispensable per als estudis d'adquisició. Especialment en el cas de les llengües de signes resulten imprescindibles per continuar en el camí d'avalar-ne l'estatus lingüístic i preservar la cultura de la comunitat sorda que les usa i les recrea. Presentem una descripció del subsistema de numerals en la Llengua de Signes Catalana (LSC), segons la varietat utilitzada a Barcelona i limitada als numerals cardinals. Els subsistemes de numerals són relativament independents dels altres subsistemes d'una llengua (Hurford 1987), la qual cosa permet descriure'ls de manera relativament independent sense por de desvirtuar la unitat de la llengua. La descripció es basa en tres font d'informació: a) la proporcionada per sords adults competents en LSC; b) la que s'ha obtingut a partir dels continguts dels cursos de LSC que imparteix la Federació d'Associacions de Sords de Catalunya (FESOCA) i c) la que s'ha recollit en observacions naturals en associacions de sords. Es va sol·licitar als informants que llegissin en LSC una sèrie de numerals escrits en notació aràbiga i que senyalessin totes les variants que coneguessin de cada numeral. Per a l'elecció de numerals s'han tingut en compte diversos criteris, especialment el valor absolut i el valor posicional dels dígits (Fuentes 1999). La descripció es realitzarà segons els paràmetres de configuració de la mà, orientació, ubicació, direcció i moviment. Els primitius lèxics inclouen signes per als nou dígits, el zero i el deu, i d'altres per als operadors (CENT, MIL, MILIÓ). En primer lloc, es produeix el dígit i, després, l'operador en ordre decreixent de magnitud, per exemple: 8.756, VUIT-MIL-SET-CINC-SIS. La LSC comparteix recursos amb el sistema de numeració decimal quant a l'ús de l'ordre i el zero com a recursos sintàctics (Fuentes i Tolchinsky 1999). Els numerals a partir del sis presenten dues variants, una bimanual i una altra unimanual. Linguistic descriptions are the basis for acquisition studies. Particularly in Sign languages, descriptions are also essential to support their linguistic status and to preserve the cultural background of the Deaf community that uses and re-creates it. We describe the subsystem of the cardinal numerals in Catalan Sign Language (LSC), according to the variety used in Barcelona. Subsystems of numerals are relatively independent of the other subsystems of a language (Hurford 1987), so this allows them to be described in a relative independent way without detracting from language unity. The description is based in three information sources: a) deaf informant adults qualified in LSC; b) LSC courses taught by professors of the Catalonia Deaf Federation (FESOCA) and c) natural observations in Deaf associations. We asked the informants to read a series of numerals written in Hindu-Arabic notation, showing all variants they knew of each numeral. Several criteria were taken into account to select the numerals, specially the absolute and place value of the digits (Fuentes 1999). The description was carried out using the Sign parameters: handshape, orientation, location, direction and movement. The lexical primitives include signs for the nine digits, zero to ten and the operators (HUNDRED, THOUSAND, MILLION). Signs are produced in the following way: in the first place the digit and then the operator in decreasing order of magnitude, for example: 8.756, EIGHT--THOUSAND--SEVEN--FIVE--SIX. As LSC uses order of signing and zero as syntactic resources, it shares resources with the Decimal Number System (Fuentes & Tolchinsky 1999). Des que es va establir el 2006, el concepte de crowdsourcing ha cridat l’atenció d’acadèmics de tots els camps del saber. Els estudis de Traducció i d’Interpretació no són una excepció i ja són nombrosos els articles, llibres i tesis doctorals que tracten de la traducció amateur i la traducció per crowdsourcing. D’altra banda, la demanda de serveis de traducció i interpretació en llengua de signes catalana (LSC) per part d’associacions de persones sordes no ha fet més que augmentar en les últimes dècades. Dins d’aquest col·lectiu, els nens petits en edat de desenvolupament del llenguatge són especialment vulnerables i els que més es beneficiarien de poder comptar amb continguts literaris en el seu propi idioma. Aquesta tesi neix d’un interès en el mètode de treball col·laboratiu conegut com a crowdsourcing i la seva aplicació com a solució al problema de l’escassetat de continguts literaris infantils en LSC. L’objectiu d’aquesta tesi és demostrar que les traduccions amateurs produïdes en una plataforma de crowdsourcing poden arribar a un nivell de qualitat similar al de les professionals. Per tal d’assolir-lo, vam dissenyar una plataforma de crowdsourcing en la qual quatre participants de dos perfils diferents (dues persones sordes usuàries habituals de LSC i dues estudiants universitàries de Traducció i Interpretació) van gravar les seves traduccions de dos contes infantils del català a la LSC. Aquests contes infantils ja comptaven amb traduccions professionals, que comparem amb les produïdes en la nostra plataforma mitjançant un estudi de recepció amb qüestionaris. Per a això, vam dissenyar quatre qüestionaris amb ítems idèntics que només variaven en els vídeos de les traduccions a analitzar. En ells, els enquestats havien de puntuar amb una escala de Likert de l’1 al 5 diferents categories que havíem establert com a criteris de qualitat d’aquestes traduccions. Aquestes vuit categories eren “visibilitat”, “expressió facial”, “morfologia”, “lèxic”, “sintaxi”, “rol”, “predicats amb classificadors” i “adequació del conte al perfil del públic”. L’estudi de recepció va comptar amb 29 participants (20 sords i 9 oients), que van demostrar que la qualitat de les traduccions amateurs de les estudiants universitàries no arribava al nivell de les professionals, però, en canvi, que les produïdes pels traductors amateurs sords igualava i fins i tot superava a les traduccions professionals. Posteriorment, vam organitzar una sèrie d’entrevistes amb tres dels traductors que van participar en la plataforma i amb la directora de l’editorial responsable de les traduccions professionals. Vam preguntar als entrevistats sobre el procés de traducció que havien seguit i la seva opinió respecte a les iniciatives de traducció amateur. L’objectiu d’aquestes entrevistes era recollir dades qualitatives que expliquessin les valoracions que cada traducció va rebre en l’estudi de recepció, a més d’informació que servís per a millorar futures plataformes de traducció per crowdsourcing en LSC. Malgrat les limitacions amb les quals ha comptat, principalment un corpus de texts limitat i un nombre de participants reduït, aquesta tesi suposa una important aportació als estudis de Traducció i d’Interpretació en llengua de signes al nostre país, ja que és la primera tesi en espanyol que estudia la traducció no professional en una de les llengües de signes nacionals mitjançant estudis de recepció amb usuaris sords. Desde que se acuñó en 2006, el concepto de crowdsourcing ha llamado la atención de académicos de todos los campos del saber. Los estudios de Traducción e Interpretación no son una excepción y ya son numerosos los artículos, libros y tesis doctorales que abordan la traducción amateur y la traducción por crowdsourcing. Por otra parte, la demanda de servicios de traducción e interpretación en lengua de signos catalana (LSC) por parte de asociaciones de personas sordas no ha hecho más que aumentar en las últimas décadas. Dentro de este colectivo, los niños pequeños en edad de desarrollo del lenguaje son los más vulnerables y los que más se beneficiarían de poder contar con contenidos literarios en su propio idioma. Esta tesis nace de un interés en el método de trabajo colaborativo conocido como crowdsourcing y su aplicación como solución al problema de la escasez de contenidos literarios infantiles en LSC. El objetivo de esta tesis es demostrar que las traducciones amateurs producidas en una plataforma de crowdsourcing pueden llegar a un nivel de calidad similar a las profesionales. Para ello diseñamos una plataforma de crowdsourcing en la que cuatro participantes de dos perfiles diferentes (dos personas sordas usuarias habituales de LSC y dos estudiantes universitarias de Traducción e Interpretación) grabaron sus traducciones de dos cuentos infantiles del catalán a la LSC. Estos cuentos infantiles ya contaban con traducciones profesionales, que comparamos con las producidas en nuestra plataforma mediante un estudio de recepción con cuestionarios. Para ello, diseñamos cuatro cuestionarios con ítems idénticos que solo variaban en los vídeos de las traducciones a analizar. En ellos, los encuestados debían calificar con una escala de Likert del 1 al 5 diferentes categorías que habíamos establecido como criterios de calidad de dichas traducciones. Estas ocho categorías eran “visibilidad”, “expresión facial”, “morfología”, “léxico”, “sintaxis”, “rol”, “predicados con clasificadores” y “adecuación del cuento al perfil del público”. El estudio de recepción contó con 29 participantes (20 sordos y 9 oyentes), que demostraron que la calidad de las traducciones amateurs de las estudiantes universitarias no llegaba al nivel de las profesionales, pero, en cambio, que las producidas por los traductores amateurs sordos igualaba e incluso superaba a las traducciones profesionales. Posteriormente, organizamos una serie de entrevistas con tres de los traductores que participaron en la plataforma y con la directora de la editorial responsable de las traducciones profesionales. Preguntamos a los entrevistados acerca del proceso de traducción que habían seguido y su opinión respecto a las iniciativas de traducción amateur. El objetivo de estas entrevistas era recoger datos cualitativos que explicaran las valoraciones que cada traducción recibió en el estudio de recepción, además de información que sirviera para mejorar futuras plataformas de traducción por crowdsourcing en LSC. A pesar de las limitaciones con las que ha contado, principalmente un corpus de textos limitado y un número de participantes reducido, esta tesis supone una importante aportación a los estudios de Traducción e Interpretación en lengua de signos en nuestro país, ya que es la primera tesis en español que estudia la traducción no profesional en una de las lenguas de signos nacionales mediante estudios de recepción con usuarios sordos. Since it first appeared in 2006, the concept of crowdsourcing has caught the attention of academics from all fields of knowledge. Translation studies are no exception and there are already numerous articles, books and PhD thesis researching amateur translation and crowdsourced translation. Apart from that, the demand for translation and interpretation services in Catalan Sign Language (LSC) by deaf associations has only increased in recent decades. Within this group, young children in language development stages are the most vulnerable and those who would benefit the most from having literary contents in their native language. This PhD thesis stems from an interest in the working process known as ‘crowdsourcing’ and its possible application as a solution to the problem presented above: the lack of children literature in LSC. The aim of this PhD dissertation is to demonstrate that amateur translations produced on a crowdsourcing platform can reach a level of quality similar to that of professional ones. To do this, we created a crowdsourcing platform in which four participants from two different profiles (two deaf LSC speakers, and two Translation and Interpreting students) recorded translations of two children’s stories from Catalan to LSC. These children’s stories already had professional translations, which we compared with those produced on our platform in a reception study using questionnaires. To do this, we created four questionnaires with identical items whose only differences were the videos of the translations to be analyzed. In them, the respondents had to rate from 1 to 5 in a Likert scale different categories that we had established as quality criteria. These eight categories were “visibility”, “facial expression”, “morphology”, “vocabulary”, “syntax”, “role”, “classifier predicates” and “content’s suitability to its public”. The reception study had 29 participants (20 deaf and 9 hearing), who revealed that the quality of amateur translations by university students did not reach a professional level, however, translations produced by deaf translators were as good, if not better, than professional ones. After that, we organized a series of interviews with three of the crowdsourcing platform’s participants and with the publisher responsible for the professional translations. We asked interviewees about the translation process they had followed and their opinion regarding amateur translation initiatives. The objective of these interviews was to collect qualitative data explaining the scores received by each translation in the reception study, as well as useful information on how to improve future crowdsourcing platforms in LSC. Despite its limitations, namely a limited text corpus and a small number of participants, this dissertation represents an important contribution to Sign Language Translation and Interpretation studies in our country, as it is the first PhD thesis in Spanish that studies non-professional translation in one of the Spanish sign languages using reception studies with deaf users. Although the phonological description of spatial planes that configure signing space is very detailed (Brentari 1998; Liddell and Johnson 1989; Sandier 1989), our knowledge of their use and functions at the discourse level is still very limited. This article describes the use of the spatial planes in Catalan Sign Language (LSC). It provides a unified treatment of various linguistic phenomena (e.g., hierarchical relations and locatives) that have hitherto been described separately in the sign language literature and of other aspects (e.g., encoding of specificity) that have not yet been the subject of research in LSC or other signed languages. The features found in two of the three spatial planes as described in the phonological literature are also relevant beyond the sentence level and serve well-defined discourse functions. RESUMO: O desenvolvimento escolar do aluno surdo depende de seu domínio de uma língua de sinais. Todavia, uma língua de sinais não é cotidianamente desenvolvida no ambiente familiar; assim, esse domínio precisa ser alcançado no espaço escolar, no qual se espera que o aluno surdo tenha pares em sua língua e possa interagir por meio dela. Contudo, o ambiente escolar tem pouca tradição de trabalhar com o desenvolvimento de língua oral/língua de sinais, focalizando atividades com língua escrita como meta. Sobre o aluno surdo, pouco se discute acerca do desenvolvimento da língua de sinais no espaço escolar. O professor bilíngue foca seu trabalho no ensino da língua majoritária como segunda língua na modalidade escrita, trabalhando com a língua de sinais, sem uma proposta clara de desenvolvimento dessa língua. Debates sobre práticas para aprimoramento da oralidade para o desenvolvimento do sujeito ouvinte indicaram a oportunidade de refletir sobre esses aspectos em relação aos alunos surdos. O foco deste artigo está, então, no debate desse tema, visando a formação de professores para aprimoramento dos usos da língua de sinais no espaço escolar. ABSTRACT: The academic development of the deaf student depends on his/her mastery of a sign language. However, a sign language is not developed daily in the family environment; thus, this domain needs to be achieved in the school space, in which it is expected that the deaf student has peers in his/her language and can interact through it. All the same, the school environment has little tradition of working with the development of oral/sign language, focusing on activities with written language as a goal. Regarding the deaf student, little is discussed about the development of sign language in the school space. The bilingual teacher focuses his/her work on teaching the majority language as a second language in the written modality, working with sign language, without a clear proposal for the development of that language. Debates on practices to improve orality for the development of the hearing subject indicated the opportunity to reflect on these aspects in relation to deaf students. The focus of this paper is, therefore, on the debate on this theme, aiming at the training of teachers to improve the uses of sign language in the school space. RESUMEN: El desarrollo escolar del alumno sordo depende de su dominio de la lengua de signos. Sin embargo, habitualmente, la lengua de signos no se adquiere en el entorno familiar; así, su dominio debe lograrse en el espacio escolar, en el que se espera que el alumno sordo tenga pares en esta lengua y pueda interactuar por medio de ella. Sin embargo, el contexto escolar cuenta con poca tradición de trabajo en el desarrollo de la lengua oral / de signos, focalizándose en actividades con la lengua escrita como meta. Con respecto al estudiante sordo, hay pocos estudios en los que se analice cómo tiene lugar el desarrollo de la lengua de signos en el espacio escolar. El docente bilingüe centra su trabajo en la enseñanza de la lengua mayoritaria como segunda lengua en la modalidad escrita, trabaja con la lengua de signos, pero no siempre sabe cómo promover el desarrollo de esta. La discusión sobre la relevancia de las prácticas para mejorar el desarrollo de la oralidad en los alumnos oyentes nos ofrece la oportunidad de reflexionar sobre estos aspectos en relación con los aprendices sordos. El objetivo de este artículo es, por lo tanto, la discusión sobre este tema para capacitar a los docentes respecto a la mejora de los usos de la lengua de signos en el espacio escolar.

With the aim of exploring the ways most commonly used by deaf people to find out about current affairs, this paper summarizes some quantitative research that was carried out involving 138 deaf people: 69 in Spain and 69 in the US. The work is complemented qualitatively by a focus group in Gallaudet University, Washington, using American Sign Language (ASL), and by observations from three lecture/ news presentations which took place in Barcelona in Catalan Sign Language (LSC). In some European countries, indirect or partial legal recognition of sign languages (SLs) has been granted in the last few decades through specific policies on deaf education, SL interpreting, or public media, but, in general, full legal recognition by dedicated laws has not been achieved. I present and analyze the recent legal initiatives for SLs in Spain (2007) and Catalonia (2006, 2010) (Spanish and Catalan SLs, respectively). They are shown to exemplify two different approaches to the reality of minority languages in the visual-gestural modality: The former act formulates SL recognition as part of the regulation of the accessibility means for deaf people, both signers and nonsigners; the latter regulates Catalan SL instead, leaving accessibility issues for deaf people for regulation by a separate bill. Numeral-incorporating roots in the numeral systems of Argentine Sign Language (LSA) and Catalan Sign Language (LSC), as well as the main features of the number systems of both languages, are described and compared. Informants discussed the use of numerals and roots in both languages (in most cases in natural contexts). Ten informants took part in the LSC data collection, and six in the LSA data collection. The data were corroborated by analyzing the videos available at www.youtube.com/confargsordos (for LSA) and by videos and books provided by the ILLESCAT Foundation (for LSC), as well as by previous research. A general inventory of roots in both languages and specifically of roots in both numerals systems was carried out. The role of roots in the formation of ordinals and cardinals and the main features of both number systems are described. The data suggest that numeral-incorporating roots in these number systems are formed only from numerals that do not derive from manual counting. New positive attitudes towards language interaction in the realm of bilingualism open new horizons for sign bilingual education. Plaza-Pust and Morales-Lopez have innovatively reconceptualised a new cross-disciplinary approach to sign bilingualism, based on both sociolinguistics and psycholinguistics. According to this framework, cross-modal bilingualism within the deaf community is a natural, dynamic phenomenon, where code mixing and code switching between languages of different modalities - signed or spoken/written - are often a pragmatic choice of the signer/speaker that serves specific purposes in specific contexts. Following this line of thought, cross-modal contact situations may be viewed as a sign of sophistication, as in any bilingualism, and a fundamental, transitory phase of bilingual language acquisition. Transfer from a sign language to a written second language has been put into question in the sign bilingual education literature. This project intends to address that question through the investigation of cross-modal contact categories found in the written productions of 15 deaf students in a bilingual secondary school in Barcelona. We argue that the pooling of resources that makes deaf students use structures from Catalan Sign Language in written English is suggestive of linguistic transfer at a morphosyntactic level and that language contact is positive to students' bilingual development in this specific context. The impact of this finding for language teaching policy, practice and research in deaf education will be discussed. This study is part of a larger study to further analyse these contact phenomena according to milestones in second language acquisition of written English, Catalan and Spanish, and seeks to establish parallels between the bilingual acquisition development of these deaf students and that of their hearing counterparts.
