BOARD books ,PROTECTIVE coverings ,COST ,CULTURE ,COLLECTIONS - Abstract
Taking as a cue the concept of the "whole" book the author analyses a very particular form of fragment the tablets of the Biccherna the office of public expenses of the city of Siena. This article proposes a fresh look at the category of fragments. Those painted boards represent an extraordinary collection of fragmented bindings—not binding fragments. This paper highlights the need to see those very special types of fragments with a particularly sharp expression of mimetic materiality. Those tablets are simultaneously protective covers of accounts and examples of artistic expression and literate culture. But their full potential can only be uncovered if they are positioned in their full context—as books-in-the-world. Thus contextualized their analysis can also help us in building better frameworks for the whole field of fragmentology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...

Once public transport is fully automated, human operators will no longer be needed for tasks like manoeuvring, paying, and boarding. Interfaces must evolve to cover the entire interaction chain from booking to boarding. We present a user-centred design of a mobile-based booking application and an LED-based boarding interface for automated shuttles. Our approach included comprehensive requirements and feasibility analyses to ensure technical viability and user satisfaction. Laboratory study results highlight the advantages and challenges of the boarding interface, underscoring the importance of early user requirements and feasibility assessments in designing automated shuttle systems. TEACHERS ,BOARD books ,TEACHER training ,VILLAGES ,SCHOOL year - Abstract
One of the first applications for teacher training, which was seen as the locomotive of development and progress, was the issue of training village teachers. In line with this aim, the first village teacher training school was opened in September 1926 in the town of Zincidere in Kayseri. Another village teacher training school was opened in Denizli in 1927. In Turkey, many teachers were trained in just 6 years of education, and these teachers worked in the remotest corners of the country. In line with the possibilities of the period, both theoretical and practical education was provided at the village teacher training schools, which set an example for the Village Institutes to be opened later. This research, which is an examination of the decision book of the Kayseri Zincidere Village Teacher Training School Council (1929-1932), is a qualitative study and was framed with the content analysis technique. Although the school opened in 1926, the existing decision book (1929-1932) was analyzed because the book belonging to the first years of the school could not be reached. Because of the examination, it was seen that topics such as "status of one-month education, actions to be followed, disciplinary situation, books and stationery, instructions, examinations, curriculum program, discussion of one of the lessons", which will set an example for today's teachers' council, were emphasized. In addition, in line with the information obtained, the structure, functioning, and practices of the teachers' boards of that period also lead to the idea that the issues discussed are more effective and efficient than the structure, functioning, and practices of today's teachers' boards. BOARD books , *BABY books , *PICTURE books for children , *EMERGENT literacy , *READING interests of children , *CHILDREN'S books - Abstract
Within the medium of picturebooks is a category specifically targeted to the very youngest "readers"—board books. They are designed primarily for babies, infants, and toddlers, a preliterate audience from newborn to 3-years-old. And while board books are still technically picturebooks, their design and construction follows a different set of parameters from older picturebooks. The one thing they do share with their older siblings is that they are typically purchased by adults for child "readers," a paradox that raises complicated questions about the actual intended audience of board books. Furthemore, while board books "help infants learn to recognize familiar objects and to develop basic concepts related to people, animals, possessions, familiar events, and daily routines" (Hughes-Hassell in Inside board books: representations of people of color. The Library Quarterly, The University of Chicago Press Journals, Chicago, 2010), there is a new trend in board books of older books adapted into the board book medium, or for educational, politically driven topics obviously not intended for child readers at all. With sales of board books increasing in recent years (Harbison in Category snapshot: the benefits of the board book boom. Publishers Weekly. https://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/childrens/childrens-industry-news/article/81736-category-snapshot-the-benefits-of-theboard-book-boom.html, 2019) it leaves one to wonder who are board books really for and what do these "readers" really want from them? This paper examines this new trend and what it says about the medium, from the perspective of a picturebook and board book creator as well as from an academic viewpoint. BOARD books , *SEWING , *SPINE - Abstract
One of the most common types of damage to books is when the boards detach from the bookblock. Consequently, book binders and conservators have been creating ways to reattach boards for decades. This article will briefly examine some of these attachment methods and how they informed, but failed to address, some of the board reattachment problems commonly encountered. It then presents a reattachment treatment that requires minimal intervention to the original spine or board materials but still provides a secure means to attach the boards without compromising the integrity of the sewing structure and allows the volume to be fit for purpose. The treatment is efficient, safe and uses readily available equipment, making it ideal for conservators in private practice and those working with time and cost restraints. The article details step-by-step the novel technique that the author developed to address these issues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...
