We investigate the spectral characteristics of the Be/X-ray binary system, EXO 051910+3737.7, in which Be/X-ray systems are the largest sub-class of high-mass X-ray binaries. Spectroscopic observations are taken by the Thai National Telescope (TNT) with a Medium-RESolution spectrograph (MRES) instrument for seven nights spanning from 2020 to 2021. Our primary focus is directed towards the analysis of two Balmer lines, namely Hα and Hβ, given that Be stars typically exhibit emission features in at least one of these hydrogen Balmer lines during certain phases. Our observations reveal split Balmer emission lines throughout the entire duration of our monitoring. Double Gaussian profiles were employed for line fitting to characterize these lines. The presence of double peaks in the Balmer lines indicates the presence of asymmetries within the circumstellar disc. We then analyze V/R variations and the changes in Hβ spectra. Our analysis of V/R variation which Violet (V) and Red (R) peak intensity components, revealed rapid fluctuations occurring within a single day, although determining the precise periodicity was constrained by instrumental limitations and the duration of observability. Furthermore, employing observed the wavelength differences (Δλ) in conjunction with typical Be star parameters allowed us to estimate the radius (rβ) of the Hβ emitting envelope. We use the RIOTS4 sample of SMC field OB stars to determine the origin of massive runaways in this low-metallicity galaxy using Gaia proper motions, together with stellar masses obtained from RIOTS4 data. These data allow us to estimate the relative contributions of stars accelerated by the dynamical ejection vs binary supernova mechanisms, since dynamical ejection favors faster, more massive runaways, while SN ejection favors the opposite trend. In addition, we use the frequencies of classical OBe stars, high-mass X-ray binaries, and non-compact binaries to discriminate between the mechanisms. Our results show that the dynamical mechanism dominates by a factor of 2 – 3. This also implies a significant contribution from two-step acceleration that occurs when dynamically ejected binaries are followed by SN kicks. Based on moderate-resolution spectra in the range 4200–5200 Å, we have studied late O–early B stars in the very young open star cluster IC 1805. The temperatures of the stars under study have been derived by the differential method in which simple parameters were chosen for a number of spectral lines and were then compared with the analogous parameters from an extensive sample of O–B stars. Accurate estimates have been obtained for them from model atmospheres. Applying this method for the sample of objects under study has allowed the cluster age Myr and distance modulus to be determined with confidence. We have studied the spectroscopic variability of the emission spectrum for the sole Be star of early spectral type B MWC 50 that is a member of the cluster. We show that it is a classical Be star probably seen pole-on and has no long-term variability of the profiles typical for many classical Be stars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The results of spectral and photometric studies of Herbig Be-type star AS 310 have been presented. Photometric observations in the BVRcIc bands performed in 2016–2021 showed that the amplitude of the seasonal brightness variations of the star changes smoothly in different years and reaches a maximum of approximately around Δ V ∼ 0.6 mag in 2018. The star is more often in a weak state of radiation, but from time to time an increase in its brightness is observed. With a decrease in brightness in the V-band, the star's radiation in the blue color increases, while in the red part of the spectrum, it decreases. Searches for periodicity in the light variations did not reveal definite periods of variability. The emission components observed in the hydrogen and forbidden nitrogen lines are rather formed in the nebula where the star itself is immersed. The spectrum contains strong lines of neutral helium, without any signs of emission components. The spectral class corresponds to the combined spectrum of B3–5 V + B1.5–2 V. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The black hole spin parameter, a *, was measured to be close to its maximum value of 1 in many accreting X-ray binaries. In particular, a * ≳ 0.9 was found in a number of studies of LMC X-1. These measurements were claimed to take into account both statistical and systematic uncertainties. We perform new measurements using a recent simultaneous observation by NICER and NuSTAR, providing a data set of high quality. We use the disk continuum method together with improved models for coronal Comptonization. With the standard relativistic disk model and optically thin Comptonization, we obtain values of a * similar to those obtained before. We then consider modifications to the standard model. Using a color correction of 2, we find a * ≈ 0.64–0.84. We then consider disks with dissipation in surface layers. To account for that, we assume the standard disk is covered by a warm and optically thick Comptonizing layer. Our model with the lowest χ 2 then yields a * ≈ 0.40 − 0.32 + 0.41 . In order to test the presence of such effects in other sources, we also study an X-ray observation of Cyg X-1 by Suzaku in the soft state. We confirm the previous findings of a * > 0.99 using the standard model, but then we find a weakly constrained a * ≈ 0.82 − 0.74 + 0.16 when including an optically thick Comptonizing layer. We conclude that determinations of the spin using the continuum method can be highly sensitive to the assumptions about the disk structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Arthur Anthony Page was at the forefront of astronomy in Queensland, Australia, for much of the second half of the twentieth century. This paper explores his life and achievements. He was a talented amateur astronomer who played a key role in the evolution of astronomical societies in the southeastern corner of the State of Queensland. He also was interested in research, especially in flare stars and cataclysmic variables, and built and equipped two observatories so that he could carry out these studies. He had access to some advanced instrumentation, and was keen to adopt new technologies such as photoelectric photometry--which was very unusual for amateur astronomers at this time. One of his discoveries was the chance flaring of the Be star 66 Ophiuchi in 1969. This was significant as this type of star had not previously been known to generate flares. Arthur Page also attended national and international conferences, published research papers in national and international journals, and produced star catalogues and star charts. Over the years, he built an international reputation in the shadowy boundary between professional and amateur astronomy. A long-time Internatonal Astronomical Union (IAU) member, he was an inaugural member of the Astronomical Society of Australia (a rare honour for an amateur astronomer), and was awarded an honorary PhD by the University of Queensland. We present resolved images of IRAS 23077+6707 (“Dracula’s Chivito”) in 1.3 mm/225 GHz thermal dust and CO gas emission with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) and optical (0.5–0.8 μ m) scattered light with the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS). The Pan-STARRS data show a bipolar distribution of optically scattering dust that is characteristic for disks observed at high inclinations. Its scattered light emission spans ∼14″, with two highly asymmetric filaments extending along the upper bounds of each nebula by ∼9″. The SMA data measure 1.3 mm continuum dust as well as ^12 CO, ^13 CO, and C ^18 O J = 2 − 1 line emission over 12″–14″ extents, with the gas presenting the typical morphology of a disk in Keplerian rotation, in both position–velocity space and in each CO line spectrum. IRAS 23077+6707 has no reported distance estimate, but if it is located in the Cepheus star-forming region (180–800 pc), it would have a radius spanning thousands of astronomical units. Taken together, we infer IRAS 23077+6707 to be a giant and gas-rich edge-on protoplanetary disk, which to our knowledge is the largest in extent so far discovered.

High-resolution X-ray spectra of π Aqr, a γ Cas-type star, obtained with the Chandra/HETG spectrometer, revealed emission lines of H-like ions of Mg, Si, S, and Fe; a strong, hard continuum; and a lack of He-like ions, indicating the presence of very hot thermal plasma. The X-ray light curve showed significant fluctuations, with coherent variability at a period of about 3400 s in one observation. The hardness ratio was relatively constant except for one observation in which the spectrum was much harder and more absorbed. We interpret the X-ray emission as arising from accretion onto the secondary, which is likely a magnetic white dwarf, an intermediate polar system.

Observations of the high-mass gamma-ray binary LS 2883/PSR B1259–63 with the Chandra X-ray Observatory during the 2011–2014 and 2014–2017 binary cycles have shown X-ray-emitting clumps, presumably ejected from the binary during periastron passages. These clumps traveled at projected velocities of ∼0.1 c and have shown evidence of being accelerated. The clumps also evolved in shape, size, and flux. We monitored this binary with Chandra during the 2017–2021 binary cycle to search for additional X-ray-emitting ejections. While we find evidence of extended emission in two of the six observations, it is unlike the clumps observed in the previous three binary cycles. More specifically, the extended emission is not well localized, and no bright clump is observed moving away from the binary. It is still unclear what caused the lack of X-ray-emitting clump in this orbital cycle, but it may be due to changes in the decretion disk of the Be star. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the results of our long-term photometric and spectroscopic monitoring with the 1.5-m telescope RTT-150 for the optical counterpart of the high-mass X-ray binary IGR J21343+4738 discovered in 2002 by the INTEGRAL space X-ray observatory. The X-ray source was also repeatedly detected by the telescopes of the SRG observatory during the all-sky surveys in the period 2019–2021. We have investigated the spectroscopic and photometric variabilities of the optical counterpart, a Be star, caused by physical processes in the equatorial disk. At the stage of mass exchange in a binary system, the meridional circulation brings to the surface of the star up to two-thirds of the angular momentum that entered the star along with the accreted matter. As a result, the mass and angular momentum of the star can increase due to accretion. After the end of accretion, the star has a rotation typical of rapidly rotating Be stars. It is assumed that the angular momentum carried by the meridional circulation to the star's surface from the accreted matter is removed from the star by the accretion disk. An attempt is made to explain the sudden change in the surface structure of the magnetic field of the type HAe/Be star HD190073 assuming a variable nonstationarity of the upper layers of the star which takes place owing to accretion and burning of deuterium. Using a sample of 92 Galactic Be stars, we compare inclination angles (the angle between a star's rotation axis and the line of sight) determined from H α emission-line profile fitting to those determined by the spectroscopic signature of gravitational darkening. We find good agreement: 70% of the sample (64 out of 92 stars) is consistent with zero difference between the two methods using 1 σ errors, and there is a strong linear correlation coefficient between the two methods of r = +0.63 ± 0.05. There is some evidence that the H α profile fitting method overestimates the inclination angle for i ≲ 25°, perhaps due to the neglect of incoherent electron scattering on the H α line widths, while the gravitational darkening method underestimates the inclination angle for i ≳ 70°, perhaps due to the neglect of disk radiative transfer effects on the optical spectrum. Overall, it is demonstrated that a single H α spectrum of modest resolution and SNR can be used to extract a useful estimate for the inclination angle of an individual Be star. This allows equatorial rotation velocities for individual Be stars to be derived from v sin i measurements and will allow Be stars to be used to search for correlated spin axes in young, open clusters if unbiased (with respect to inclination) samples of Be stars are used. We present 18 yr of OGLE photometry together with spectra obtained over 12 yr revealing that the early Oe star AzV 493 shows strong photometric (Δ I < 1.2 mag) and spectroscopic variability with a dominant, 14.6 yr pattern and ∼40 day oscillations. We estimate the stellar parameters T eff = 42,000 K, log L / L ⊙ = 5.83 ± 0.15 , M / M ⊙ = 50 ± 9, and v sin i = 370 ± 40 km s−1. Direct spectroscopic evidence shows episodes of both gas ejection and infall. There is no X-ray detection, and it is likely a runaway star. The star AzV 493 may have an unseen companion on a highly eccentric (e > 0.93) orbit. We propose that close interaction at periastron excites ejection of the decretion disk, whose variable emission-line spectrum suggests separate inner and outer components, with an optically thick outer component obscuring both the stellar photosphere and the emission-line spectrum of the inner disk at early phases in the photometric cycle. It is plausible that AzV 493's mass and rotation have been enhanced by binary interaction followed by the core-collapse supernova explosion of the companion, which now could be either a black hole or a neutron star. This system in the Small Magellanic Cloud can potentially shed light on OBe decretion disk formation and evolution, massive binary evolution, and compact binary progenitors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

XTE J1829−098 is a transient X-ray pulsar with a period of ∼7.8 s. It is a candidate Be star system, although the evidence for this is not yet definitive. We investigated the twenty-year-long X-ray light curve using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer Proportional Counter Array (PCA), Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory Burst Alert Telescope, and the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image. We find that all three light curves are clearly modulated on the ∼244 days orbital period previously reported from PCA monitoring observations, with outbursts confined to a narrow phase range. The light curves also show that XTE J1829−098 was in an inactive state between approximately 2008 December and 2018 April, and no strong outbursts occurred. Such behavior is typical of Be X-ray binary systems, with the absence of outbursts likely related to the dissipation of the Be star's decretion disk. The mean outburst shapes can be approximated with a triangular profile and, from a joint fit of this to all three light curves, we refine the orbital period to 243.95 ± 0.04 days. The mean outburst profile does not show any asymmetry and has a total phase duration of 0.140 ± 0.007. However, the PCA light curve shows that there is considerable cycle-to-cycle variability of the individual outbursts. We compare the properties of XTE J1829−098 with other sources that show short phase-duration outbursts, in particular GS 1843−02 (2S 1845−024), which has a very similar orbital period, but longer pulse period, and whose orbit is known to be highly eccentric.

In this work, we update the catalog of OB stars based on the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope data release 7 and modify the OB stars’ selection criteria in spectral line indices’ space. The new catalog includes 37,778 spectra of 27,643 OB stars, of which 3827 OB stars are newly identified. The spectral subclasses of 27,643 OB stars are obtained using the automatic classification code MKCLASS. We find that the modified OB star selection criteria can better improve the completeness of late B-type stars by analyzing their spectral classification results given by MKCLASS. We also identify 3006 Be-type stars or candidates by examining the Balmer lines in their spectra and find that the frequency of our Be-type stars (10.9%) is consistent with previous results. The spatial distribution of OB stars indicates that they are mainly located in the Galactic disk. This new catalog of OB stars will provide valuable data for studying the structure and evolution of the Milky Way.

We present an analysis of high-resolution optical spectra recorded for 30 stars of the split extended main-sequence turnoff of the young (∼40 Myr) Small Magellanic Cloud globular cluster NGC 330. Spectra were obtained with the Michigan/Magellan Fiber System and Magellan Inamori Kyocera Echelle spectrographs located on the Magellan-Clay 6.5 m telescope. These spectra revealed the presence of Be stars, occupying primarily the cool side of the split main sequence. Rotational velocity ( $v\sin i$ ) measurements for most of the targets are consistent with the presence of two populations of stars in the cluster: one made up of rapidly rotating Be stars ( $\langle v\sin i\rangle \approx 200$ km s ^−1 ) and the other consisting of warmer stars with slower rotation ( $\langle v\sin i\rangle \approx 50$ km s ^−1 ). Core emission in the H δ photospheric lines was observed for most of the H α emitters. The shell parameter computed for the targets in our sample indicates that most of the observed stars should have inclinations below 75°. These results confirm the detection of Be stars obtained through photometry but also reveal the presence of narrow H α and H δ features for some targets that cannot be detected with low-resolution spectroscopy or photometry. Asymmetry variability of H α line profiles on the timescales of a few years is also observed and could provide information on the geometry of the decretion disks. Observations revealed the presence of nebular H α emission, strong enough in faint targets to compromise the extraction of spectra and to impact narrow-band photometry used to assess the presence of H α emission.

Be X-ray binaries (Be-XRBs) are one of the largest subclasses of high-mass X-ray binaries, comprised of a rapidly rotating Be star and neutron star companion in an eccentric orbit, intermittently accreting material from a decretion disk around the donor. Originating from binary stellar evolution, Be-XRBs are of significant interest to binary population synthesis (BPS) studies, encapsulating the physics of supernovae, common envelope, and mass transfer (MT). Using the state-of-the-art BPS code, POSYDON , which relies on precomputed grids of detailed binary stellar evolution models, we investigate the Galactic Be-XRB population. POSYDON incorporates stellar rotation self-consistently during MT phases, enabling detailed examination of the rotational distribution of Be stars in multiple phases of evolution. Our fiducial BPS and Be-XRB model aligns well with the orbital properties of Galactic Be-XRBs, emphasizing the role of rotational constraints. Our modeling reveals a rapidly rotating population ( ω / ω _crit ≳ 0.3) of Be-XRB-like systems with a strong peak at intermediate rotation rates ( ω / ω _crit ≃ 0.6) in close alignment with observations. All Be-XRBs undergo an MT phase before the first compact object forms, with over half experiencing a second MT phase from a stripped helium companion (Case BB). Computing rotationally limited MT efficiencies and applying them to our population, we derive a physically motivated MT efficiency distribution, finding that most Be-XRBs have undergone highly nonconservative MT ( ${\bar{\beta }}_{\mathrm{rot}}\simeq 0.15$ ). Our study underscores the importance of detailed angular momentum modeling during MT in interpreting Be-XRB populations, emphasizing this population as a key probe for the stability and efficiency of MT in interacting binaries.

H α emission is a clear indicator of circumstellar activity in Be stars, historically employed to assess the classical Be star (CBe) population in young open clusters (YOCs). The YOC NGC 330 in the Small Magellanic Cloud exhibits a large known fraction of CBe stars and was selected for a pilot study to establish a comprehensive methodology for identifying H α emitters in the Magellanic Clouds, encompassing the entire B-type spectral range. Using the SOAR Adaptive Module Imager (SAMI), we investigated the stellar population of NGC 330 using multiband BVRI +H α imaging. We identified H α emitters within the entire V -band range covered by SAMI/SOAR observations ( V ≲ 22), comprising the complete B-type stellar population and offering a unique opportunity to explore the Be phenomenon across all spectral subclasses. The stellar radial distribution shows a clear bimodal pattern between the most massive (B5 or earlier) and the lower mass main-sequence objects (later than B6) within the cluster. The former is concentrated toward the cluster center (showing a dispersion of σ = 4.26 ± 0.20 pc), whereas the latter extends across larger radii ( σ = 10.83 ± 0.65 pc), indicating mass stratification within NGC 330. The total fraction of emitters is 4.4% ± 0.5%, notably smaller than previous estimates from flux- or seeing-limited observations. However, a higher fraction of H α emitters is observed among higher mass stars (32.8% ± 3.4%) than within lower mass (4.4% ± 0.9%). Consequently, the putative CBe population exhibits distinct dynamical characteristics compared to the bulk of the stellar population in NGC 330. These findings highlight the significance of the current observations in providing a complete picture of the CBe population in NGC 330.

We examine the evolution of the disk surrounding the Be star in the highly eccentric 10.8 yr binary system δ Scorpii over its three most recent periastron passages. V -band and B − V photometry, along with H α spectroscopy, are combined with a new set of extensive multiband polarimetry data to produce a detailed comparison of the disk's physical conditions during the time periods surrounding each closest approach of the secondary star. We use the three-dimensional Monte Carlo radiative transfer code HDUST and a smoothed particle hydrodynamics code to support our observations with models of disk evolution, discussing the behavior of the H α and He i 6678 Å lines, V -band magnitude, and polarization degree. We compare the characteristics of the disk immediately before each periastron passage to create a baseline for the unperturbed disk. We find that the extent of the H α emitting region increased between each periastron passage, and that transient asymmetries in the disk become more pronounced with each successive encounter. Asymmetries of the H α and He i 6678 Å lines in 2011 indicate that perturbations propagate inward through the disk near periastron. When the disk’s direction of orbit is opposite to that of the secondary, the parameters used in our models do not produce spiral density enhancements in the H α emitting region because the tidal interaction time is short due to the relative velocities of the disk particles with the secondary. The effects of the secondary star on the disk are short-lived and the disk shows independent evolution between each periastron event.

In this study, we performed high-resolution near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy ( R = 28,000; λ = 0.90–1.35 μ m) with a high signal-to-noise ratio on HD 200775, a very young (∼0.1 Myr old) and massive intermediate-mass star (a binary star with a mass of about 10 M _⊙ each) with a protoplanetary disk. The obtained spectra show eight forbidden lines of three elements: two of [S ii ] (10289 and 10323 Å), two of [N i ] (10400 and 10410 Å), and four of [Fe ii ] (12570, 12946, 12981, and 13209 Å). This is the first time that the [N i ] lines are detected in a young stellar object with a doublet deblended. Gaussian fitting of the spectra indicates that all line profiles have low-velocity components and exhibit blueshifted features, suggesting that all lines originate from the disk winds (magnetohydrodynamic disk wind and/or photoevaporative wind). Based on the fit, the [N i ] and [Fe ii ] lines are categorized into narrow components, while the [S ii ] lines are at the boundary between broad and narrow components. These forbidden lines are suggested to be very promising disk wind tracers among the existing ones because they are in the NIR-wavelength range, which can be observed from early stages with high sensitivities. Among these lines, [N i ] lines would be a rather powerful probe for deriving the basic physical parameters of disk wind gases. However, the study of these lines herein is limited to one object; thus, further studies are needed to examine their properties.

Pre-main-sequence disk accretion is pivotal for determining the final stellar properties and the early conditions for close-in planets. We aim to establish the impact of internal (stellar mass) and external (radiation field) parameters on the disk evolution in the Lagoon Nebula massive star-forming region. We employ simultaneous u , g , r , i , H α time-series photometry, archival infrared data, and high-precision K2 light curves to derive the stellar, disk, and accretion properties for 1012 Lagoon Nebula members. We estimate that of all young stars in the Lagoon Nebula, 34%–37% have inner disks traceable down to ∼12 μ m, while 38%–41% are actively accreting. We detect disks ∼1.5 times more frequently around G, K, and M stars than around higher-mass stars, which appear to deplete their inner disks on shorter timescales. We find tentative evidence for a faster disk evolution in the central regions of the Lagoon Nebula, where the bulk of the O/B population is located. Conversely, disks appear to last longer at the nebula outskirts, where the measured fraction of disk-bearing stars tends to exceed that of accreting and disk-free stars. The derived mass accretion rates show a nonuniform dependence on stellar mass between ∼0.2 and 5 M _⊙ . In addition, the typical accretion rates appear to differ across the Lagoon Nebula extension, with values twice lower in the core region than at its periphery. Finally, we detect tentative radial density gradients in the surface accretion shocks, leading to lags in the appearance of light curve brightness features as a function of wavelength that can amount to ∼7%–30% of the rotation period.

Rapid rotation and nonradial pulsations enable Be stars to build decretion disks, where the characteristic line emission forms. A major but unconstrained fraction of Be stars owe their rapid rotation to mass and angular momentum transfer in a binary. The faint, stripped companions can be helium-burning subdwarf OB-type stars (sdOBs), white dwarfs (WDs), or neutron stars. We present optical/near-infrared Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy (CHARA) interferometry of 37 Be stars selected for spectroscopic indications of low-mass companions. From multiepoch H - and/or K -band interferometry plus radial velocities and parallaxes collected elsewhere, we constructed 3D orbits and derived flux ratios and absolute dynamical masses of both components for six objects, quadrupling the number of anchor points for evolutionary models. In addition, a new wider companion was identified for the known Be + sdO binary 59 Cyg, while auxiliary Very Large Telescope Interferometer/GRAVITY spectrointerferometry confirmed circumstellar matter around the sdO companion to HR 2142. On the other hand, we failed to detect any companion to the six Be stars with γ Cas–like X-ray emission, with sdOB and main-sequence companions of the expected spectroscopic mass being ruled out for the X-ray-prototypical stars γ Cas and π Aqr, leaving elusive WDs as the most likely companions, as well as a likely explanation of the X-rays. No low-mass main-sequence close companions were identified for the other stars.

Herbig Ae/Be stars are young contracting stars on the radiative track in the HR diagram on their way to the main sequence. These stars provide a valuable link between high and low mass stars. Here we review the progress that has been made in our understanding of these fascinating objects and their disks since the last major review on this topic published in 1998. We begin with a general overview of these stars and their properties. We then discuss the accretion of circumstellar material onto these stars. Next we discuss the dust and gas properties of the circumstellar disk before exploring the evidence for planet formation in these disks. We conclude with a brief discussion of future prospects for deepening our understanding of these sources and propose a new working definition of Herbig Ae/Be stars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We use the RIOTS4 sample of SMC field OB stars to determine the origin of massive runaways in this low-metallicity galaxy using Gaia proper motions, together with stellar masses obtained from RIOTS4 data. These data allow us to estimate the relative contributions of stars accelerated by the dynamical ejection vs binary supernova mechanisms, since dynamical ejection favors faster, more massive runaways, while SN ejection favors the opposite trend. In addition, we use the frequencies of classical OBe stars, high-mass X-ray binaries, and non-compact binaries to discriminate between the mechanisms. Our results show that the dynamical mechanism dominates by a factor of 2 – 3. This also implies a significant contribution from two-step acceleration that occurs when dynamically ejected binaries are followed by SN kicks. We describe four different approaches for the detection of magnetospheric accretion among Herbig Ae/Be stars with accretion disks. Studies of several unique objects have been carried out. One of the objects is the Herbig Ae star HD101412 with a comparatively strong magnetic field. The second is the early-type Herbig B6e star HD259431. The existence of a magnetosphere in these objects was not recognized earlier. In both cases, a periodicity in the variation of some line parameters, originating near the region of the disk/star interaction, has been found. The third object is the young binary system HD104237, hosting a Herbig Ae star and a T Tauri star. Based on the discovery of periodic variations of equivalent widths of atmospheric lines in the spectrum of the primary, we have concluded that the surface of the star is spotted. Comparing our result with an earlier one, we argue that these spots can be connected with the infall of material from the disk onto the stellar surface through a magnetosphere. The fourth example is the Herbig Ae/Be star HD37806. Signatures of magnetospheric accretion in this object have been identified using a different method. Be X-ray binaries (Be XRBs) are high-mass X-ray binaries, with a neutron star or black hole orbiting and accreting material from a nonsupergiant B-star that is rotating at a near critical rate. These objects are prime targets to understand past binary interactions as the neutron star or black hole progenitor likely experienced Roche lobe overflow to spin up the Be star we observe now. The stellar variability can then allow us to explore the stellar structure of these objects. It was recently demonstrated that the high-mass X-ray binary CPD −29 2176 descended from an ultrastripped supernova and is a prime target to evolve into an eventual binary neutron star and kilonova. We present the photometric variability from both TESS and ASAS along with the spectral properties and disk variability of the system in this paper. All of the optical lines are contaminated with disk emission except for the He ii λ 4686 absorption line. The disk variability timescales are not the same as the orbital timescale, but could be related to the X-ray outbursts that have been recorded by Swift. We end our study with a discussion comparing CPD −29 2176 to classical Be stars and other Be X-ray binaries, finding the stellar rotation to be near a frequency of 1.5 cycles day ^−1 , and exhibiting incoherent variability in three frequency groups.

Observations of the high-mass gamma-ray binary LS 2883/PSR B1259–63 with the Chandra X-ray Observatory during the 2011–2014 and 2014–2017 binary cycles have shown X-ray-emitting clumps, presumably ejected from the binary during periastron passages. These clumps traveled at projected velocities of ∼0.1 c and have shown evidence of being accelerated. The clumps also evolved in shape, size, and flux. We monitored this binary with Chandra during the 2017–2021 binary cycle to search for additional X-ray-emitting ejections. While we find evidence of extended emission in two of the six observations, it is unlike the clumps observed in the previous three binary cycles. More specifically, the extended emission is not well localized, and no bright clump is observed moving away from the binary. It is still unclear what caused the lack of X-ray-emitting clump in this orbital cycle, but it may be due to changes in the decretion disk of the Be star.

We have selected 337 intermediate- and high-mass young stellar objects (YSOs; 1.5–20 M _⊙ ) well-characterized with spectroscopy. By means of the clustering algorithm HDBSCAN, we study their clustering and association properties in the Gaia DR3 catalog as a function of stellar mass. We find that the lower-mass YSOs (1.5–4 M _⊙ ) have clustering rates of 55%–60% in Gaia astrometric space, a percentage similar to that found in the T Tauri regime. However, intermediate-mass YSOs in the range 4–10 M _⊙ show a decreasing clustering rate with stellar mass, down to 27%. We find tentative evidence suggesting that massive YSOs (>10 M _⊙ ) often (yet not always) appear clustered. We put forward the idea that most massive YSOs form via a mechanism that demands many low-mass stars around them. However, intermediate-mass YSOs form in a classical core-collapse T Tauri way, yet they do not appear often in the clusters around massive YSOs. We also find that intermediate- and high-mass YSOs become less clustered with decreasing disk emission and accretion rate. This points toward an evolution with time. For those sources that appear clustered, no major correlation is found between their stellar properties and the cluster sizes, number of cluster members, cluster densities, or distance to cluster centers. In doing this analysis, we report the identification of 55 new clusters. We tabulated all of the derived cluster parameters for the considered intermediate- and high-mass YSOs.

The accretion of material from protoplanetary disks onto their central stars is a fundamental process in the evolution of these systems and a key diagnostic in constraining the disk lifetime. We analyze the relationship between the stellar accretion rate and the disk mass in 32 intermediate-mass Herbig Ae/Be systems and compare them to their lower-mass counterparts, T Tauri stars. We find that the $\dot{M}$ – M _disk relationship for Herbig Ae/Be stars is largely flat at ∼10 ^−7 M _☉ yr ^−1 over 3 orders of magnitude in dust mass. While most of the sample follows the T Tauri trend, a subset of objects with high accretion rates and low dust masses are identified. These outliers (12 out of 32 sources) have an inferred disk lifetime of less than 0.01 Myr and are dominated by objects with low infrared excess. This outlier sample is likely identified in part by the bias in classifying Herbig Ae/Be stars, which requires evidence of accretion that can only be reliably measured above a rate of ∼10 ^−9 M _☉ yr ^−1 for these spectral types. If the disk masses are not underestimated and the accretion rates are not overestimated, this implies that these disks may be on the verge of dispersal, which may be due to efficient radial drift of material or outer disk depletion by photoevaporation and/or truncation by companions. This outlier sample likely represents a small subset of the larger young, intermediate-mass stellar population, the majority of which would have already stopped accreting and cleared their disks.

Using a sample of 92 Galactic Be stars, we compare inclination angles (the angle between a star’s rotation axis and the line of sight) determined from H α emission-line profile fitting to those determined by the spectroscopic signature of gravitational darkening. We find good agreement: 70% of the sample (64 out of 92 stars) is consistent with zero difference between the two methods using 1 σ errors, and there is a strong linear correlation coefficient between the two methods of r = +0.63 ± 0.05. There is some evidence that the H α profile fitting method overestimates the inclination angle for i ≲ 25°, perhaps due to the neglect of incoherent electron scattering on the H α line widths, while the gravitational darkening method underestimates the inclination angle for i ≳ 70°, perhaps due to the neglect of disk radiative transfer effects on the optical spectrum. Overall, it is demonstrated that a single H α spectrum of modest resolution and SNR can be used to extract a useful estimate for the inclination angle of an individual Be star. This allows equatorial rotation velocities for individual Be stars to be derived from $v\sin i$ measurements and will allow Be stars to be used to search for correlated spin axes in young, open clusters if unbiased (with respect to inclination) samples of Be stars are used.

The inner regions of protoplanetary disks host many complex physical processes such as star–disk interactions, magnetic fields, planet formation, and the migration of new planets. To study directly this region requires milliarcsecond angular resolution, beyond the diffraction limit of the world's largest optical telescopes and even too small for the millimeter-wave interferometer Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). However, we can use infrared interferometers to image the inner astronomical unit. Here, we present new results from the CHARA and VLTI arrays for the young and luminous Herbig Be star HD 190073. We detect a sub-astronomical unit (sub-AU) cavity surrounded by a ring-like structure that we interpret as the dust destruction front. We model the shape with six radial profiles, three symmetric and three asymmetric, and present a model-free image reconstruction. All the models are consistent with a near face-on disk with an inclination ≲20°, and we measure an average ring radius of 1.4 ± 0.2 mas (1.14 au). Around 48% of the total flux comes from the disk with 15% of that emission appearing to emerge from inside the inner rim. The cause of emission is still unclear, perhaps due to different dust grain compositions or gas emission. The skewed models and the imaging point to an off-center star, possibly due to binarity. Our image shows sub-AU structure, which seems to move between the two epochs inconsistently with Keplerian motion and we discuss possible explanations for this apparent change.

The HH 24 complex harbors five collimated jets emanating from a small protostellar multiple system. We have carried out a multiwavelength study of the jets, their driving sources, and the cloud core hosting the embedded stellar system, based on data from the Hubble Space Telescope, Gemini, Subaru, Apache Point Observatory 3.5 m, Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, and Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) telescopes. The data show that the multiple system, SSV 63, contains at least 7 sources, ranging in mass from the hydrogen-burning limit to proto-Herbig Ae stars. The stars are in an unstable nonhierarchical configuration, and one member, a borderline brown dwarf, is moving away from the protostellar system with 25 km s ^−1 , after being ejected ∼5800 yr ago as an orphaned protostar. Five of the embedded sources are surrounded by small, possibly truncated, disks resolved at 1.3 mm with ALMA. Proper motions and radial velocities imply jet speeds of 200–300 km s ^−1 . The two main HH 24 jets, E and C, form a bipolar jet system that traces the innermost portions of parsec-scale chains of Herbig–Haro and H _2 shocks with a total extent of at least 3 pc. H _2 CO and C ^18 O observations show that the core has been churned and continuously fed by an infalling streamer. ^13 CO and ^12 CO trace compact, low-velocity, cavity walls carved by the jets and an ultracompact molecular outflow from the most embedded object. Chaotic N -body dynamics likely will eject several more of these objects. The ejection of stars from their feeding zones sets their masses. Dynamical decay of nonhierarchical systems can thus be a major contributor to establishing the initial mass function.

Of the more than 3000 radio pulsars currently known, only ∼300 are in binary systems, and only five of these consist of young pulsars with massive nondegenerate companions. We present the discovery and initial timing, accomplished using the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) telescope, of the sixth such binary pulsar, PSR J2108+4516, a 0.577 s radio pulsar in a 269 day orbit of eccentricity 0.09 with a companion of minimum mass 11 M _⊙ . Notably, the pulsar undergoes periods of substantial eclipse, disappearing from the CHIME 400–800 MHz observing band for a large fraction of its orbit, and displays significant dispersion measure and scattering variations throughout its orbit, pointing to the possibility of a circumstellar disk or very dense stellar wind associated with the companion star. Subarcsecond resolution imaging with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array unambiguously demonstrates that the companion is a bright, V ≃ 11 OBe star, EM* UHA 138, located at a distance of 3.26(14) kpc. Archival optical observations of EM* UHA 138 approximately suggest a companion mass ranging from 17.5 M _⊙ < M _c < 23 M _⊙ , in turn constraining the orbital inclination angle to 50.°3 ≲ i ≲ 58.°3. With further multiwavelength follow-up, PSR J2108+4516 promises to serve as another rare laboratory for the exploration of companion winds, circumstellar disks, and short-term evolution through extended-body orbital dynamics.

Recent observations discovered that some repeating fast radio bursts (FRBs) show complicated variations and reversals of Faraday rotation measures (RMs), indicating that the sources of these FRBs are embedded in a dynamically magnetized environment. One possible scenario is that repeating FRBs are generated by pulsars in binary systems, especially containing a high-mass companion with strong stellar outflows. Here we study the RM variations caused by stellar winds and a possible stellar disk. If the magnetic field is radial in the stellar wind, RMs will not reverse except if the magnetic axis inclination angle is close to 90°. For the toroidal magnetic field in the wind, RMs will reverse at the superconjunction. For the case of the toroidal field in the disk, the RM variations may have a multimodal and multiple reversal profile because the radio signals travel through different components of the disk during periastron passage. We also apply this model to FRB 20180916B. By assuming that its 16.35 day period is from a slowly rotating or freely precessing magnetar, we find that the secular RM variation can be explained by the periastron passage of a magnetar in a massive binary system. Although the majority of Herbig Ae/Be (HAEBE) stars are likely multiple systems, relatively few multiples have been identified. We aim to create a statistically significant survey of HAEBE multiplicity as a function of stellar mass, to shed light on mixed-mass star formation. Two independent adaptive optics IR imaging surveys were conducted, between 1993 and 2007. A total of 143 stars were observed, including 126 HAEBE stars. These surveys are significantly more sensitive than previous imaging work and, combined with accurate distance and proper-motion data from GAIA Data Release 3, provide a broad survey of intermediate-mass multiplicity. We perform a statistical probability analysis to identify the likely physical companions, and analyze multiepoch observations for common proper motions. We find 250 stellar detections around 88 sample stars. Of these, 70 systems are likely multiple systems, and 42 companions around 29 systems are reported here for the first time. Correcting for completeness, we find a multiplicity fraction of 54%. Multiples are found randomly across all spectral types, but high-order multiples are more common among the hottest stars. We report on observations of the extended environment of the bright Be star γ -Cas performed using intensity interferometry measurements within its H α emission line. These observations were performed using a modified version of the I2C intensity interferometry instrument installed onto the 1.54 m MéO optical metrology telescope and a portable 1 m telescope (T1M). In order to better constrain the extent of the H α envelope, observations were performed for two different positions of the T1M telescope, corresponding to an intermediate and long baselines in which the extended region was partially and fully resolved. We find that the observed data are consistent with past interferometric observations of γ -Cas. These observations demonstrate the capability to equip optical telescopes of different optical designs with intensity interferometry capabilities and illustrate the potential to scale a similar system onto many additional telescopes.

Light variability is an essential attribute of young stellar objects (YSOs) at the pre-main-sequence (PMS) stage, which can be treated as an indicator to trace star formation. We present a statistical study on the infrared NEOWISE variability of new and large-sized PMS stars as well as Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) and classical Be (CBe) stars identified from Gaia Data Release 2. A total of 3792 (including 714 HAeBe), 417, and 473 NEOWISE variable sources were detected from the catalog of 8470 PMS (including 1361 HAeBe), 693 CBe, and 1309 uncertain (possibly belonging to either HAeBe or CBe) stars, respectively. We found that 80% of the PMS variables are dominated by irregular infrared variability, whereas variables in the CBe and uncertain categories exhibit comparable contributions from secular (linear, curved, and periodic) and stochastic (burst, drop, and irregular) variables. This, in combination with infrared W1–W2 colors, W4 luminosities, and the spectral energy distribution slope at near- and mid-infrared wavelengths, suggests different evolutionary stages of the PMS (including HAeBe), uncertain, and CBe stars, from less to more evolved. A statistical analysis of variable source properties (e.g., period and fractional amplitude) further reveals a potential sequence possibly associated with disk evolution for different types of light curves (from linear, to curved, periodic, stochastic, and nonvariable stars). Possible mechanisms for the variable sources are suggested to be related to either extinction via circumstellar matter, or contribution of multiple systems surrounding the YSOs, as opposed to variable accretion (e.g., episodic accretion or accretion burst).

We present 18 yr of OGLE photometry together with spectra obtained over 12 yr revealing that the early Oe star AzV 493 shows strong photometric (Δ I < 1.2 mag) and spectroscopic variability with a dominant, 14.6 yr pattern and ∼40 day oscillations. We estimate the stellar parameters T _eff = 42,000 K, $\mathrm{log}L/{L}_{\odot }=5.83\pm 0.15$ , M / M _⊙ = 50 ± 9, and v sin i = 370 ± 40 km s ^−1 . Direct spectroscopic evidence shows episodes of both gas ejection and infall. There is no X-ray detection, and it is likely a runaway star. The star AzV 493 may have an unseen companion on a highly eccentric ( e > 0.93) orbit. We propose that close interaction at periastron excites ejection of the decretion disk, whose variable emission-line spectrum suggests separate inner and outer components, with an optically thick outer component obscuring both the stellar photosphere and the emission-line spectrum of the inner disk at early phases in the photometric cycle. It is plausible that AzV 493’s mass and rotation have been enhanced by binary interaction followed by the core-collapse supernova explosion of the companion, which now could be either a black hole or a neutron star. This system in the Small Magellanic Cloud can potentially shed light on OBe decretion disk formation and evolution, massive binary evolution, and compact binary progenitors.

We performed the slitless spectroscopic survey to identify classical Be (CBe) stars in open clusters older than 100 Myr. Observing a sample of 71 open clusters, we identified 13 CBe stars in 11 open clusters, one of, which (TYC 2679-432-1) is a new detection. The 13 CBe stars show both H α in emission and IR excess, which confirm that they possess gaseous circumstellar discs. Two more CBe stars are found to exhibit H α in absorption for the first time, indicating that might be passing through disc-less episode presently. The spectral-type estimation is done for all these 15 stars and it is noticed that they belong to B0.5–B8 type. Studies of the magnetic fields of Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) stars can aid in understanding how the magnetic fields of AB stars of intermediate mass are created and evolve. It has been shown that the magnetic fields and magnetic fluxes of HAeBe stars before they emerge on the main sequence are significantly lower than for their successors, main sequence AB stars. In order to explain this mystery, the effect of accretion on Herbig stars and their magnetic fields is studied. Evidence is found in favor of the assumption that in magnetic HAeBe stars with a higher rate of accretion the magnetic fields are lower on the average. However, since the accretion rates fall off exponentially with the age of a star, even if it should be confirmed, this effect cannot fully explain the discontinuous increase in the magnetic fields and magnetic fluxes when HAeBe stars enter the main sequence. Very young ( t ≲ 10 Myr) stars possess strong magnetic fields that channel ionized gas from the interiors of their circumstellar disks to the surface of the star. Upon impacting the stellar surface, the shocked gas recombines and emits hydrogen spectral lines. To characterize the density and temperature of the gas within these accretion streams, we measure equivalent widths of Brackett (Br) 11–20 emission lines detected in 1101 APOGEE spectra of 326 likely pre-main-sequence accretors. For sources with multiple observations, we measure median epoch-to-epoch line strength variations of 10% in Br11 and 20% in Br20. We also fit the measured line ratios to predictions of radiative transfer models by Kwan & Fischer. We find characteristic best-fit electron densities of n _e = 10 ^11 –10 ^12 cm ^−3 , and excitation temperatures that are inversely correlated with electron density (from T ∼ 5000 K for n _e ∼ 10 ^12 cm ^−3 to T ∼ 12,500 K at n _e ∼ 10 ^11 cm ^−3 ). These physical parameters are in good agreement with predictions from modeling of accretion streams that account for the hydrodynamics and radiative transfer within the accretion stream. We also present a supplementary catalog of line measurements from 9733 spectra of 4255 Brackett emission-line sources in the APOGEE Data Release 17 data set.

Wide-field searches for young stellar objects (YSOs) can place useful constraints on the prevalence of clustered versus distributed star formation. The Spitzer/IRAC Candidate YSO (SPICY) catalog is one of the largest compilations of such objects (∼120,000 candidates in the Galactic midplane). Many SPICY candidates are spatially clustered, but, perhaps surprisingly, approximately half the candidates appear spatially distributed. To better characterize this unexpected population and confirm its nature, we obtained Palomar/DBSP spectroscopy for 26 of the optically bright ( G < 15 mag) “isolated” YSO candidates. We confirm the YSO classifications of all 26 sources based on their positions on the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram, H and Ca ii line emission from over half the sample, and robust detection of infrared excesses. This implies a contamination rate of
