The purpose of the present study was to examine differences in game-related statistics between winning and losing game outcomes and determine which performance parameters have the greatest impact in classifying winning from losing game outcomes at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division-I men's basketball level of competition. The data scraping technique was used to obtain publicly available data over a 2018-2019 season span. The total number of games examined was 5,147. Independent t-tests were used to examine statistically significant differences between winning and losing game outcomes, while a full model discriminant function analysis was used to determine the relative contribution of each game-related statistic and its ability to classify winning from losing game outcomes (p < 0.05). Alongside scoring a greater number of points at the end of the game, the findings of the present study indicate that winning teams: (a) attempted and made more field goals, three-point, and free-throw shots, (b) accumulated more defensive and total rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks, (c) had fewer turnovers and personal fouls, and (d) secured greater field goal, three-point, and free-throw shooting percentage. Moreover, the top three performance parameters discriminating winning from losing game outcomes were field goal percentage, defensive rebounds, and assists, accounting for 16.8%, 12.2%, and 12.0% of the total percentage of explained variance, respectively (i.e., 41.0% combined). Overall, these findings support the expected roles of offensive and defensive gamerelated statistics and provide further insight into how they work together to optimize the chances of securing the desired game outcome. Film can be used as an educational tool in a number of ways, including being utilized to educate about disability and disability sport. The purpose of this study was to explore attitudes and actions toward disability sport after viewing a documentary film on wheelchair basketball. A convergent mixed method design was utilized for this study, and data were collected through online questionnaires (quantitative) and focus groups (qualitative). Findings revealed that participants' expectations of disability were transformed by personal stories from within the documentary film. Participants experienced advocacy characteristics such as a desire to educate others, but they were not willing to engage in action. On March 11th, 2020, the National Basketball Association (NBA) paused its season after ~ 64 games due to the Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak, only to resume ~ 5 months later with the top 22 teams isolated together (known as the "bubble") in Orlando, Florida to play eight games each as an end to the regular season. This restart, with no new travel by teams, provided a natural experiment whereby the impact of travel and home-court advantage could be systematically examined. We show here that in the pre-COVID-19 regular season, traveling across time zones reduces winning percentage, team shooting accuracy, and turnover percentage, whereas traveling in general reduces offensive rebounding and increases the number of points the opposing (home) team scores. Moreover, we demonstrate that competition in a scenario where no teams travel (restart bubble) reduces the typical effects of travel and home-court advantage on winning percentage, shooting accuracy, and rebounding. Thus, home-court advantage in professional basketball appears to be linked with the away team's impaired shooting accuracy (i.e., movement precision) and rebounding, which may be separately influenced by either circadian disruption or the general effect of travel, as these differences manifest differently when teams travel within or across multiple time zones. This study explored the effect of a documentary film on college students through the write-to-learn (WTL) process, including how students experience the film, their feelings about the experience, and the manner in which the film informed perceptions of or actions toward inclusion and disability sport. A convenience sample of 204 undergraduate students enrolled in a general education lifetime fitness and wellness kinesiology course (Mage = 19.89; 55.4% female, 81.8% Caucasian) completed a short questionnaire. After data collection was complete, long-format responses were compiled into a spreadsheet and open coded by the first and third authors independently. In total, participants' responses were coded into 332, 258, and 240 codes for the first, second, and third long-format questions, respectively. The most common response categories were gained new knowledge, inspirational, power of personal stories, emotional, I learned a lot, and people with disabilities are able. Disability sport experiences, including the viewing of a disability-focused documentary film, can offer a platform from which students can examine dispositions toward disability, evaluate the effect of their dispositions on other people, and potentially experience a change in perspective. Prediction of play outcomes is fundamental for sports science, engineering and practice in ballgames. Predicting who obtains a ball after a shot failure called rebound in basketball, is one of the important research subjects. To obtain the rebound, players often compete and move towards the ball drop position. Researchers have analysed important factors of a rebound using basic game statistics and video analysis. However, the most critical factors in the players' movement to obtain a rebound are unknown. The purpose of this study is to determine the important factors to obtain a rebound and to develop a method to predict who obtains it with player's positional data. The factors were quantified and divided into three categories; individual position, individual movement and interpersonal relationship, and at least one factor from each category was significantly related with obtaining rebounds by logistic regression. Furthermore, our method predicted who obtained rebounds using logistic regression (70.3%) and support vector machine (71.1%). We also spatially visualised the value of factors related to the shooter's position through heat maps. Our method has a potential to provide a ground for the evaluation of the effectiveness of practical techniques (e.g. box out) in rebound practice and game execution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the present study was to identify the best predictors when classifying winning and losing teams in basketball in consideration of situational variables by the classification and regression tree (CRT) non-parametric analysis. The sample was composed of 1,404 balanced games (score-differences: 1-14 points) from the Spanish EBA Basketball League that presented high heterogeneity and a non-parametric distribution. These games were split into faster- and slower-paced games according to ball possessions per game (using a cluster/r-means). The CRT analysis was used to predict which game-related variable/s better classified winning and losing teams during slower- and faster-paced games. In total, this approach explained 72% of the total variance in the slower- and 69.3% in the faster-paced games. The results identified importance of defensive rebounds (100%), successful free-throws (94.7%), assists (86.1%), and fouls committed (55.9%) for the classification of winning and losing teams in the fast-paced games. Conversely, in the slow-paced games the better classification of winning or losing teams was accomplished by the following variables: successful free-throws (100%), defensive rebounds (82.3%), fouls committed (68.4%), assists (66.9%), successful 2-point (62.2%) and 3-point field-goals (61.6%). The influence of situational variables was identified only for team quality in the slow-paced games. The present findings allow coaches for a better control of games and competition. Objetives. In view of a physical and athletic preparation, before technical-specific increasingly targeted, this work seeks to clarify from various points of view, the technical, tactical and mainly the biomechanical one, those that are the constituent elements of the fundamental of the rebound to order to optimize the specific preparation. In basketball, bouncing consist in the action of recovering the ball, after carrying out a wrong shot. It is of fundamental importance either in defense, giving the opportunity for a new ball possession and then you can set up a new offensive action as well as to have the opportunity to go in fast breack, or in attack since it offers players an additional opportunity shooting placing itself thus as one of the items among those that often give the final victory. For this reason a good basketball player has to learn to take care of this aspect of the game. Knowing how to defend the rebound is also a necessary feature during the competition; the player executing a cut off, looking at the place themselves in front of his opponent, holding it essentially away from the basket and jump effectively preventing him from rebounding. A general three-dimensional dynamic computational model is used to estimate likely basketball rebounding regions for short-, medium-, and long-range direct and bank shots. The deterministic part of the quasi-rigid body model includes radial basketball stiffness and damping, and contains six distinct sub-models that completely encompass all reasonably possible qualitative basketball behaviors: gravitational flight with air drag, and ball-contact sub-models for ball-rim, ball-bridge, ball-board, ball-bridge-board, and ball-rim-board contact. Each contact sub-model allows slipping and non-slipping, and spinning and non-spinning motions at the ball-contact point(s). The deterministic model is driven with random initial conditions. Using independent Gaussian probability distributions for release velocity, release angle, and lateral deviation angle, simulations calculate ball trajectories of shots on a grid of three distances and seven different floor angles around the hoop on the right side of the court. The main results are the induced probability distributions over the court surface of rebounding ball locations at the height of the rim. Angled direct and bank shots have different most-likely rebounding positions, and usually have two high-probability positions, one on the same side as, and the other on the side opposite from, the shooter. The general high-probability rebound position on the shooter side is close to the hoop, even in long-range shots. On the opposite side, the most likely rebound distance from the hoop is roughly proportional to shot distance. Assumed standard deviations of release conditions affect rebound positions. A larger deviation of release velocity increases the likely rebound distance from the hoop on the shooter side. A larger deviation of lateral deviation angle moves the most likely rebound position out of the optimal shot path plane on the shooter side. Abstract: A three dimensional dynamic model is used to estimate the best rebounding position for players in basketball. The model has six distinct sub-models: flight, and ball-contact sub-models of ball-rim, ball-bridge, ball-board, ball-bridge-board, and ball-rim- board contact. It allows both slipping and non-slipping interactions at the ball-contact point. Using probabilistic selection of release velocity, angle, and lateral deviation angle, simulations analyse ball trajectories and good rebounding positions for players. Our estimation includes player wingspan. We analyse the relationship between the most likely player rebound positions and ball rebound positions with high probability. The best player rebound position is usually different from the most likely ball rebound position. Player rebound regions for players with large wingspans are very close to the hoop and include some likely ball rebound positions. For short-range shots, one player is able to collect almost all of rebounding balls but two or three rebounders are required for long-range shots. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The aim of the present study was to identify basketball game performance indicators which best discriminate winners and losers in regular season and playoffs. The sample used was composed by 323 games of ACB Spanish Basketball League from the regular season (n=306) and from the playoffs (n=17). A previous cluster analysis allowed splitting the sample in balanced (equal or below 12 points), unbalanced (between 13 and 28 points) and very unbalanced games (above 28 points). A discriminant analysis was used to identify the performance indicators either in regular season and playoff games. In regular season games, the winning teams dominated in assists, defensive rebounds, successful 2 and 3-point field-goals. However, in playoff games the winning teams' superiority was only in defensive rebounding. In practical applications, these results may help the coaches to accurately design training programs to reflect the importance of having different offensive set plays and also have specific conditioning programs to prepare for defensive rebounding. The article analyzes the side of rebound in basketball games at high levels. The study indicates that almost all of the rebounds came from paint, while no rebounds were found in the three point zone. It suggests basketball coaches to consider the reference values discovered for the training plans and game techniques.

The aim of this work is to classify basketball skills according to the preference of the young players who play this sport. The most interesting results show the existence of 5 factors which could explain the variation percentage of 66, 99 %. The present study analyzed the relationship between the level of self-efficacy of the player with the ball in basketball, various performance indicators, and individual participation of the youth player in competition, with the goal of being able to establish initial values that help to define game styles and systems that ate adapted to the characteristics of the youth player. In order to evaluate the levels of self-efficacy, a questionnaire was administered to 187 players from the under-16 age category. From a total of 22 games, the following variables related to the individual performance of the player were analyzed: a) points scored; b) shot attempts and shots made of 1,2, and 3 points; c) efficacy percentage of 1,2, and 3-point shots; d) rebounds made; and c) personal fouls received. With regard to participation, the following variables were analyzed: f) minutes played; g) total time of ball possession; h) number of ball possessions; i) number of passes received; and j) number of offensive phases in which the player participates. The results indicate that the performance and participation variables correctly classify 74.2% when differentiating between players with high and low levels of self- efficacy. The players with high levels of self-efficacy presented higher values in the different performance and participation variables than the players with low levels of self-efficacy. Home advantage was defined as the fact that home teams win more than the 50% of their matches (Courneya & Carron, 1992). The aim of this work was to investigate the home advantage in the ACB league and identify the game-related statistics which best discriminate home and away teams. The data were obtained from the Spanish Basketball Association for the period 2007-2008 ACB league (n= 306). Game related statistics were normalized to 100 ball possessions. In order to compare game related statistics in home and away teams, a discriminative analysis was employed. This analysis identifies the game related statistics that best discriminate between home and away teams. The function obtained was interpreted with the structural canonical coefficients (SC), with values higher than I .301. In the 2007-2008 ACB league, the home teams won the 55.22% (n=169) of the games. The analysis identifying the two-point field goals made, blocks made, dunks, the defensive rebounds and the assists as common to the mean vectors that discriminate home teams in all games. Blocks received contribute to discriminate away teams in ACB league. These results could be used by the psychologist who works with the team. They must design specific programs to decrease anxiety levels, and to improve motivation and concentration levels in basketball players before a competition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the present study was to identify game-related statistics that differentiate winning and losing teams according to game location. The sample included 306 games of the 2004-2005 regular season of the Spanish professional men's league (ACB League). The independent variables were game location (home or away) and game result (win or loss). The game-related statistics registered were free throws (successful and unsuccessful), 2- and 3-point field goals (successful and unsuccessful), offensive and defensive rebounds, blocks, assists, fouls, steals, and turnovers. Descriptive and inferential analyses were done (one-way analysis of variance and discriminate analysis). The multivariate analysis showed that winning teams differ from losing teams in defensive rebounds (SC = .42) and in assists (SC = .3 8). Similarly, winning teams differ from losing teams when they play at home in defensive rebounds (SC = .40) and in assists (SC = .41). On the other hand, winning teams differ from losing teams when they play away in defensive rebounds (SC = .44), assists (SC = .30), successful 2-point field goals (SC = .3 1), and unsuccessful 3-point field goals (SC = -.35). We investigate how closely NBA teams play up to their potential. We find that shooting, rebounding, stealing the ball and blocking shots raise the number of potential wins while turnovers lower it.
