Abstract

The first purpose of this study was to examine the interrelationships among three forms of relational efficacy within performing dyads, namely, self-efficacy, other-efficacy, and relation-inferred self-efficacy. The second objective was to examine the relationships between these efficacy beliefs and athletes' perceptions of their commitment to and satisfaction with their current partnership. Participants were 120 junior tennis players (age, M = 14.30 years, SD = 1.21) performing within 60 intact pairs (i.e., doubles). Results revealed that self-efficacy and other-efficacy were predictive of athlete commitment and satisfaction, respectively. In addition, by utilizing actor-partner interdependence models, partner as well as actor effects were evident. The findings illustrate that relational efficacy beliefs may not only have implications for the individual holding such beliefs, but also for his or her relational partner. Abstract

This case study analyses the mid-nineteenth-century theatre's response to one noteworthy event and in doing so highlights contemporary celebrity culture: a bare-knuckle prize fight between Tom Sayers and John Carmel Heenan, otherwise known as the Benicia Boy. The theatrical response to the Sayers–Heenan fight reveals much about the nature of nineteenth-century celebrity culture. In the immediate aftermath dramatists exploited the event itself for its topical resonance. Thereafter the body of Sayers became the prime product. Audiences, eager to see their hero in the flesh, did not seem to mind the fact that he was not a gifted performer outside of the prize ring. His legend somehow outlived the pitiable figure he cut on stage. Further testimony to this is provided by the presence of massive crowds at his funeral in 1865, which has led to comparisons with the spectacle of that of the Duke of Wellington in 1852. Both men were celebrated as representatives of England, but Sayers's life was also appropriated as an example of working-class heroism. The minor theatres and entertainment venues had been instrumental in creating and sustaining Sayers's unique place in the mythology of the prize ring. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

6. Repair of Full-Thickness Rotator Cuff Tears in Professional Baseball Players.

Background: Despite the relative frequency of partial-thickness rotator cuff tears seen in baseball players, full-thickness rotator cuff tears in baseball players are uncommon. Hypothesis: Return to competitive baseball is difficult after surgical treatment of a full-thickness rotator cuff tear. Study Design: Case series; Level of evidence, 4. Methods: We evaluated the results of 16 professional baseball players after a mini-open repair of a full-thickness rotator cuff tear. Twelve patients were pitchers with injury to their dominant shoulders. Four patients were position players; 2 had injuries involving their dominant shoulders, and 2 had injuries to their nondominant shoulders. Results: At a mean follow-up of 66.6 months for the pitchers, only 1 player (8%) was able to return to a high competitive level of baseball with no significant shoulder dysfunction after mini-open repair of a full-thickness rotator cuff tear. Of the 2 position players with mini-open repairs of the full-thickness rotator cuff tear of their dominant shoulders, 1 was able to return to professional baseball. Of the 2 position players with mini-open repairs of the full-thickness rotator cuff tear of their nondominant shoulders, both were able to return to professional baseball at the same or higher level. Conclusion: It is very difficult for a professional baseball pitcher to return to a competitive level of pitching after a full-thickness rotator cuff repair with a mini-open approach.
