ABSTRACT: Hip resurfacing offers advantages for young, active patients afflicted with hip osteoarthritis and may also be a beneficial treatment for adult canines. Conventional hip resurfacing uses metal‐on‐metal bearings to preserve bone stock, but it may be feasible to use metal‐on‐polyethylene bearings to reduce metal wear debris while still preserving bone. This study characterized the short‐term wear behavior of a novel hip resurfacing implant for canines that uses a 1.5 mm thick liner of highly cross‐linked polyethylene in the acetabular component. This implant was tested in an orbital bearing machine that simulated canine gait for 1.1 million cycles. Wear of the liner was evaluated using gravimetric analysis and by measuring wear depth with an optical scanner. The liners had a steady‐state mass wear rate of 0.99 ± 0.17 mg per million cycles and an average wear depth in the central liner region of 0.028 mm. No liners, shells, or femoral heads had any catastrophic failure due to yielding or fracture. These results suggest that the thin liners will not prematurely crack after implantation in canines. This is the first hip resurfacing device developed for canines, and this study is the first to characterize the in vitro wear of highly cross‐linked polyethylene liners in a hip resurfacing implant. The canine implant developed in this study may be an attractive treatment option for canines afflicted with hip osteoarthritis, and since canines are the preferred animal model for human hip replacement, this implant can support the development of metal‐on‐polyethylene hip resurfacing technology for human patients. © 2017 Orthopaedic Research Society. CoCrMo alloys have been widely used in metal-on-metal (MoM) hip replacements due to their superior wear and corrosion resistance properties. However, metal ions like Co 2+ and Cr 3+ , or even Cr 6+ released from CoCrMo hip prostheses can induce macrophage apoptotic vs. necrotic mortality and damage the surrounding tissues. Simultaneously, osteolysis induced by the wear debris can be a cause of failure. Nano wear debris is more active than the bulk material, due to its small size. In this study, to accurately analyse the fresh wear debris retrieved from the hip simulator and the interaction between the particles and tribocorrosion of CoCrMo, wear debris was observed without protein digest, using a combined experimental approach involving the employment of TEM and ICP-MS. The results suggest that nanoscale wear debris generated from a hip simulator in bovine serum albumin (BSA) lubrication was Cr-rich, containing crystalline and amorphous structures; meanwhile, without any proteins, the wear particles mostly had an hcp-Co crystalline structure. For analyzing natural frequency of a 3SPS+1PS parallel hip joint manipulator, a rigid-flexible coupling theory is proposed. 3SPS denotes that the PHJM has three legs and each leg type is SPS. 1PS denotes that the PHJM has one constrained leg and the constrained leg type is PS. The rigid finite element method and flexible finite element method are the base of the rigid-flexible coupling theory. Firstly, the basic element models of the PHJM are established based on the rigid-flexible coupling analysis. Secondly, the elastic dynamic models of the flexible legs are established based on the Lagrange equation and flexible finite method. Finally, the rigid-flexible coupling model of the PHJM is assembled by building the relationship between the rigid and flexible elements. Based on the rigid-flexible model, the natural frequency of the PHJM is analyzed. In addition, the effect parameters of the natural frequency are analyzed. The analysis results of the natural frequency show that the natural frequency is symmetric distribution in the working space, and the minimum value of the 1 order natural frequency is 2.3 Hz. The operating frequency (1 Hz) is much lower than the 1st order natural frequency, so the PHJM will not generate resonance and can operate stably. The analysis results of the parameter show that the PHJM has the minimal sensitivity with the effect parameter E and has the maximal sensitivity with the effect parameter H, so the length of the middle leg has the biggest impact on the natural frequency. Natural frequency analysis results have been checked by the hammer test, which verifies the feasibility of the rigid-flexible coupling theory. At the same time, the regression analysis is carried out based on the hammer test results. Using the rigid-flexible coupling theory to solve the natural frequency of the parallel manipulator, the physical meaning is explicit and the modeling process is clear, so the rigid-flexible coupling theory is a universal method. Surface modification techniques have been developed significantly in the last couple of decades for enhanced tribological performance of artificial hip implants. Surface modification techniques improve biological, chemical and mechanical properties of implant surfaces. Some of the most effective techniques, namely surface texturing, surface coating, and surface grafting, are applied to reduce the friction and wear of artificial implants. This article reviews the status of the developments of surface modification techniques and their effects on commonly used artificial joint implants. This study focused only on artificial hip joint prostheses research of the last 10 years. A total of 27 articles were critically reviewed and categorized according to surface modification technique. The literature reveals that modified surfaces exhibit reduced friction and enhanced wear resistance of the contact surfaces. However, the wear rates are still noticeable in case of surface texturing and surface coating. The associated vortex flow aids to release entrapped wear debris and thus increase the wear particles generation in case of textured surfaces. The earlier delamination of coating materials due to poor adhesion and graphitization transformation has limited the use of coating techniques. Moreover, the produced wear debris has adverse effects on biological fluid. Conversely, the surface grafting technique provides phospholipid like layer that exhibited lower friction and almost zero wear rates even after a longer period of friction and wear test. The findings suggest that further investigations are required to identify the role of surface grafting on film formation and heat resistance ability under physiological hip joint conditions for improved performance and longevity of hip implants. ABSTRACT To prevent periprosthetic osteolysis and subsequent aseptic loosening of artificial hip joints, we recently developed a novel acetabular highly cross-linked polyethylene (CLPE) liner with graft polymerization of 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) on its surface. We investigated the wear resistance of the poly(MPC) (PMPC)-grafted CLPE liner during 20 million cycles in a hip joint simulator. We extended the simulator test of one liner to 70 million cycles to investigate the long-term durability of the grafting. Gravimetric, surface, and wear particle analyses revealed that PMPC grafting onto the CLPE liner surface markedly decreased the production of wear particles and showed that the effect of PMPC grafting was maintained through 70 million cycles. To simulate the movement of a human during daily activities, such as walking, running, squatting, and kneeling, a novel parallel hip joint simulator whose key movement component is a 3SPS + 1PS parallel manipulator with four degrees of freedom (DOF) was proposed. SPS denotes the spherical-prismatic-spherical leg, and PS denotes the prismatic-spherical leg where only the prismatic joint is actuated and hence underlined. Firstly, the formulae for solving the inverse kinematics of the 3SPS + 1PS parallel manipulator were derived based on the unit quaternion method. Then, the parallel hip joint simulator was designed and finally developed by means of constructing the mechanical module, control module, hydraulic loading module, and data transmission module. In addition, three linear actuators are driven by the scheduled inverse displacement trajectories to enable the moving platform to output rotations about the Z-, Y-, and X-axes for representing flexion/extension, abduction/adduction, and external/internal rotations of the human hip joint. Simultaneously, the hydraulic loading module represents the dynamic loading as described by ISO 14242 Part-1 acting on the hip joint during the kinematic experiment. The kinematic experiment and dynamic loading experiment show that the fitting curves of the experimental results are consistent with the designed movement and loading trajectories. All these illustrate that the developed 3SPS + 1PS parallel hip joint simulator with effective design of all modules can substantially represent the designed movement and loading trajectories. The article explores the performance of prosthetic metal-on-metal (MoM) bearings in hip replacement implants as a treatment for arthritis. An analysis of the embedded nanoparticles at the tribological layer formed at the sliding contact region found the presence of graphitic carbon, which can act as a lubricant. These findings support the data of low friction and wear of MoM devices, provide data for improvements in prosthetic design, and caution about the potential adverse responses of body tissues to the exposure to eroded graphitic particles.

Computational methods used to quantify wear in failed hip arthroplasties are often limited by human and sampling errors. An automated software solution has been developed to overcome these shortcomings. The overarching aim of the current study was to validate this method through a comparison with gravimetric measurements. Seventy-two different wear volumes were quantified to within a mean error of 0.14 mm3 and 0.10 mm3 of gravimetric results for simulated cup and head components, respectively. This approach had an improved accuracy, repeatability and reproducibility over a commonly used, commercially available software solution, which bears many of the common sources of error. • This article validates an automated method for quantifying wear in hip implants. • Bearing surface wear volumes were quantified to a maximum mean error of 0.14 mm3. • An automated solution provides improved accuracy compared to a commercial software. • Potential impact for a million patients world-wide with metal-on-metal hips. The article presents an experimental study which evaluates the principal strain distribution differences between the intact and artificial hip joint around the acetabular cavity. The study uses two in vitro models of a natural and a prosthetic hip joint articulation made of composite materials matching the mechanical properties of the real bones. Results show that an artificial articulation changes the strain distribution on the bone structure.
