Chemistry and Arts are two subjects that often have no connection in the context of school. Students see themselves as very good either at Arts or at Natural Sciences, but very rarely at both. However, Art and especially drawings play an important role in chemistry lessons as well as in chemistry education research. Chemistry education researchers often use drawings. Also, chemistry teachers use them to explain chemistry when teaching in the classroom. To teach chemistry, teachers work with the students’ ideas, preconceptions, pre-knowledge and their ability to think abstractly. Thus, drawing and the drawing skills of the teachers play an important role in learning and in teaching chemistry. The article shows the connection between drawings and chemistry education in research and practice. Possible uses of drawings for learning and teaching are explained and some examples are discussed. The sustainability of the renowned artistic glass sector of Murano island, in the Venice Lagoon (Italy), has been challenged in recent years by the evolution of several socio-economic dynamics as well as by environmental constraints. Actually, a renewal of the systemic structure of the artistic glass production is increasingly compelling. In this work, the Emergy Accounting method (EMA) is applied to evaluate the environmental sustainability of a Murano factory producing colored glass. The analysis, for which new Unit Emergy Values (UEVs) were calculated for some chemicals, shows that the activity relies mainly upon purchased resources, which is the most evident element of systemic weakness. An evaluation of the downstream ecosystem services required to dilute some heavy metal pollutants is also presented, again addressing the intrinsic fragility of the system. In particular, it is shown how the sustainability of the sector is indissolubly linked to the problems involved in the management of the entire Venice lagoon, underlining how the safeguard of Murano must be part of that of Venice and its lagoon. How can a work of art give us clues about scientific aspects? How can chemistry help a painter enhance his creativity and, above all, preserve the original characteristics of his work? Does an artist require scientific knowledge to innovate or, at least, not to be faked? Other symbiotic fields between art and science are: tattoos, as body art with physical and chemical consequences; pigments, as basic materials with interesting historiographical preparations; spectroscopy diagnosis, as very broad and thorough method of analysis (but also specific and non-intrusive); biosensors, as one of the applications of new pigments. Note also the interconnection between the several possible paths of science and art, which reflect new challenges with enormous potential investigated through a literature review and the application as a case study in an educational inquiry module. Most modern art galleries arrange their collections in chronological order and to the average viewer it often the changes in style, fashion or subject matter that is indicative of the passage of time. Far less noted, although possibly more obvious is the change in paint which occurred. Ultimately it is the evolution of chemical techniques that is responsible for these developments. The article presents a study which aims to improve the conceptual understanding of students in chemistry using art-based chemistry activities. The study made use of the pretest-postest control group design and chemistry concept understanding test (CCUT) to obtain the research data. The result of the study indicates the positive effect of the art-based chemistry activities of the conceptual understanding of students.
